For over a decade, our portfolio of in-house magazines has been lovingly produced, printed, and distributed to our esteemed subscribers across the globe from our headquarters in the UK.

But now we are moving with the times, adopting a digital-first approach by producing online-only publications. A major factor in this decision is to minimise our environmental footprint, reducing the carbon emissions involved in the logistics of print magazine distribution and the resources required therein.

“We always planned that when our digital subscribers consistently accounted for 85% of our total magazine subscribers, we would cease printing our publications in-line with our environmental and sustainability goals.”
– Ben Weaver, CEO, Outlook Publishing Ltd

Going forward, we will provide print orders of any magazine in-line with the requests of our featured companies, subscribers, and conference & expo partners.

Welcome to our 15th edition of Outlook Travel magazine.

As the festive season fast approaches, our latest issue is an early Christmas present gift-wrapped with tantalising travel guides showcasing destinations across the planet.

Emerging from the shadow of the Rocky Mountains in Western Canada, Calgary combines big-city energy with wondrous natural beauty and kind hospitality.

Indeed, Calgary is widely regarded as the world’s friendliest city, and is currently experiencing an evolution into a world-class destination where soaring skyscrapers adorn the Alberta landscape.

As the city’s official destination management organisation, Tourism Calgary promotes the area as perfect for leisure and business.

“Calgary appeals to a wide range of travellers, from families and couples to solo adventurers and business professionals,” outlines CEO, Cindy Ady.

For winter sports enthusiasts, meanwhile, the brilliantly white mountains and diverse terrain of Lech Zürs await in the heart of Ski Arlberg.

The warmth of Lech Zürs’ hospitality belies the hilly winter chill, whilst its quintessential mountain village charm has been preserved amid continuous development to the delight of visitors.

“Our aim is, and remains, the preservation of the unique character of the locality, and the protection of its environment in the long term,” shares Hermann Fercher, Tourism Director and CEO of the Lech Zürs Tourist Board.

From the snowy slopes of Lech Zürs to the fiery temples of Azerbaijan, whose sacred flames present a window to the past of a land forever at a crossroads of people, continents, and faiths.

Straddling Western Asia and Eastern Europe, fire is deeply ingrained in the culture and mythology of Azerbaijan, a country that has something for everyone with its plethora of scenic hikes, wellness resorts, award-winning wines, and rich cuisine.

“Blending ancient history with modern attractions gives travellers a multidimensional experience,” says Florian Sengstschimd, CEO of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board.

This final issue of 2023 also guides you through the safari holiday hotspot of Kenya, the verdant paradise of the Seychelles, and more.

To all those that celebrate, we wish you happy holidays and happy travels!

PORTS REPORT FEE INCREASES

INCREASED TOURIST FEES at some of the world’s most frequented ports are being implemented at short notice, as cruising has increased in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ports Victoria in Melbourne, the latest port to introduce a fee increase, recently announced that its per-passenger fee would increase from AUD$28.50 per passenger to AUD$32, due to be enforced from 1st January, 2024.

Rising fees have caused commotion within the cruising industry, as Princess Cruises and Cunard announced their planned boycott of Ports Victoria in 2025.

Further disruption is anticipated, as Quintana Roo in Mexico considers a USD$5-per-passenger cruise tax, and Scotland’s government hopes to levy higher fees on cruise lines with increased emissions.

BEHIND THE LENS

Inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, blending with a minimalist aesthetic and an appreciation for pure lines in design and architecture, we display the passion of Enrico Costantini for capturing the customs and cultures of distant lands

Writer: Jack Salter | Photography: Enrico Costantini

With a family background in architecture and ancestral ties to the Venetian Doges, Enrico Costantini has emerged as one of Italy’s up-andcoming photographers, specialising in reportage and interior architecture.

Costantini’s signature lies in the simplicity and harmonious compositions of his images, which are often described as Caravaggesque. His work has been featured in prominent media outlets such as Forbes, Conde Nast Traveller, Vogue, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, and more.

Costantini has the ability to capture the essence of a location and transport viewers to another world through his photographs, showcasing his unique perspective and artistic vision.

Constantly pushing boundaries and experimenting with new techniques to capture the perfect shot, Costantini’s passion for photography has taken him to breathtaking locations worldwide, where he continues to inspire and captivate audiences with his creativity and technical expertise.

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, what drew you to work in travel photography?

Enrico Costantini (EC): What initially captivated me about travel photography was the irresistible allure of venturing into uncharted territories and immersing myself in diverse cultures. The prospect of unravelling the mysteries hidden within each new destination has always fuelled my curiosity and passion.

Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 9 BEHIND THE LENS INTERVIEW
Enrico Costantini
BEHIND THE LENS INTERVIEW
“WHEN IT COMES TO TRAVELLING, THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES LIE IN THE ART OF ADAPTATION. BEING ADAPTABLE AND PREPARED

FOR THE UNEXPECTED

IS PARAMOUNT”

OT: What most excites you about travel photography?

EC: The exhilarating aspect of travel photography lies in the ability to breathe life into a place through the lens. The sheer excitement of capturing unique perspectives and weaving together a visual narrative that showcases the essence and soul of a location is what truly ignites my creative spirit. It’s like painting with light and emotions, giving each place its own distinct personality and charm.

OT: On the flip side, what are the biggest challenges?

EC: When it comes to travelling, the biggest challenges lie in the art of adaptation. Being adaptable and prepared for the unexpected is paramount. It’s not just about understanding different cultures, but also grasping their

unique ways of thinking and acting. When I’m assigned to a destination I’ve never been to before, the lack of familiarity poses a significant challenge. It becomes crucial to quickly gain an overview of the place and identify what truly captivates and engages me, so I can uncover an intriguing angle for my storytelling.

OT: How would you describe your style of photography?

EC: Defining one’s style is no easy task, but I strive to capture the essence of reality while transcending it with an atmospheric touch. I’m drawn to both minimalism and maximalism, finding beauty in the extremes. Midtones have never appealed to me; instead, I prefer to play with light and shadows, focusing on intricate details. My aim is to evoke the senses through my images, allowing viewers to not only see but also smell, taste, and feel the spirit of the place.

Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 11

OT: What has been one of your favourite destinations to capture?

EC: Among the multitude of places I’ve had the privilege to photograph, Ethiopia stands out as an extraordinary experience. It offers a captivating blend of rich culture and breathtaking landscapes. The stark contrast between the north and the south makes it feel like exploring two distinct countries. Vibrant colours and distinctive individuals add a sense of authenticity to every frame. One standout memory was witnessing the Coptic Christmas at the Lalibela site in the north, where I became part of a small group of witnesses to this remarkable event. Another unforgettable experience was venturing to the Danakil region in the far north, which left an indelible mark on my soul.

OT: Have you been involved in any interesting assignments or projects recently that you’d like to highlight?

EC: Certainly! While this particular project didn’t revolve around travel, it was a deeply meaningful endeavour with AISM Teramo – an association dedicated to supporting individuals with multiple sclerosis and their families. The initiative, titled “Love: Desire for Tenderness”, aimed to shed light on the important topic of sexual assistance for people with disabilities. We crafted a series of 13 powerful black and white portraits, ultimately creating a calendar and hosting a photographic exhibition. Recently, the exhibition concluded, and it was an incredible experience to immortalise each person’s story through these portraits.

OT: Finally, what’s next for the future? Are there any new destinations you’d like to cross off your bucket list?

EC: The future holds endless possibilities for exploration, and I’m driven by the passion to discover new destinations. South America beckons, particularly Brazil, where I’m captivated by the allure of brutalist architecture. Japan and Indonesia have also long fascinated me, and I hope to experience their unique cultures firsthand. Additionally, Central Asia has recently sparked my interest, presenting a wealth of uncharted territories. In the near future, I’m excited to embark on a journey to Mauritania during the upcoming Christmas holidays – a less-travelled destination I’ve always yearned to explore. I’m especially thrilled to ride the Iron Ore Train, known as the “Train du Desert”, which has been operating since 1963. This 20-hour odyssey traverses the Sahara, connecting the iron ore mines in Zouérat to the Atlantic coast port of Nouadhibou.

In this remarkable photograph taken during an extraordinary voyage to Antarctica with Viking Cruises, I found myself standing in a place I had never thought I would be able to visit. As we sailed towards the Antarctic peninsula, a realm of remoteness unravelled before our eyes. The first glimpse of the landscape revealed a mesmerising spectacle of white, sharply carved icebergs emerging from the frigid waters. It was a truly magical moment, where the sheer magnitude of being there overwhelmed my senses. This experience, so surreal and transformative, will forever be etched in my memory.”

TRAVEL BUSINESS:

A SUSTAINABLE SAFARI EXPERIENCE

An exclusive world of untouched landscapes and unrivalled luxury summons you to Lepogo Lodges, where comfort meets conservation. Kate Hugues, Operations Director, explains how opulence and sustainability can co-exist when implemented with finesse and understanding

LEPOGO LODGES TRAVEL BUSINESS Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 25

Nestled in the heart of the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, familyowned Lepogo Lodges offer guests both luxury and sustainability amongst unspoilt beauty.

As a fully not-for-profit venture, and one of the few lodges in the world that bestows 100 percent of any financial gain back into the reserve, the Lepogo Lodges story isn’t just about luxury; it is a pledge to conservation that aims to preserve a future for the land, wildlife, and local communities.

“By creating beautiful high-end lodges without taking any profit for ourselves, we can give more back to conservation for the future,” opens Kate Hughes, Operations Director at Lepogo Lodges.

“Our off-grid haven stands out as a rare gem, and we are situated within the 50,000 hectare (ha), malaria-free Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, home to the ‘Awesome Eight’ – the ‘Big Five’, plus cheetahs, wild dogs, and pangolins,” she enthuses.

The villas all overlook the winding Palala River and endless bushlands. Each of the four double villas span 125 square metres (sqm), whilst the family villa is set over 350 sqm and sleeps up to five people, comprising primary and children’s suites separated by a large living area. There are also three outdoor decking areas and a large infinity pool.

“Each villa combines modern amenities with an appreciation for its surroundings – with underfloor heating, heated plunge pools, and automated lights combined with ‘sky beds’ that are beautifully made up by the lodge team so that guests can sleep under the stars with a guided astronomy book; a very unique form of stargazing,” Hughes reflects.

PERSONALISED LUXURY

Every stay with Lepogo Lodges is exclusive, as staff work tirelessly to personalise each guest’s experience, and features consistent luxury elements. The company prefers to curate each guest’s stay depending on their unique

wishes, needs, experiences, and desires, which allows for a wide range of adventures in the pristine African wilderness.

“General highlights include daily game drives with expert guides, where guests have the chance to see the majestic and beautiful wildlife Africa has to offer, along with everything else that makes the Lapalala Wilderness so special,” explains Hughes.

Additional exclusive experiences at Lepogo Lodges include bush walks, water safaris, fishing, visiting the San Bushman paintings, sleeping out under the stars, in-villa spas, bush breakfasts, and sundowners. Family activities such as treasure hunts, pottery and jewellery making classes, treetop yoga sessions, and bush baking classes can also be enjoyed.

“For a truly private experience, Melote House, opening in January 2024, is set to be exclusively available as a private hire for between 12 and 16 guests,” she adds.

Melote House has been designed with a carbon-neutral approach, featuring impressive, rammed earth walls

OUTLOOK TRAVEL: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT LEPOGO LODGES’ COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES?

Kate Hughes, Operations Director: “We are deeply committed to community engagement and education through our partnership with the Lapalala Wilderness School. In terms of community investment, the lodge prioritises sourcing products from best-in-class local producers, focusing on both quality and volume.

“This commitment extends to supporting local community projects, such as Kamatsogo’s Changing Lives Stitch by Stitch initiative, which supplies the lodge’s on-site Curio shop with beautifully crafted soft toys, cushions, and clothing.

“The Mogalekwena ladies handcraft bed mats and placemats for the lodge, made with Palala palm from the river flowing beneath the lodge.

“Additionally, the community at Timola contributes by creating room sprays and other amenities for the shop. We work closely with these talented communities, actively working to develop new products that align with the preferences of our guests.”

constructed from earth taken from the hillside it sits on. Built-in tiers maximise views over the Lapalala Wilderness, whilst the exclusive accommodation features multigenerational family living, with the main house sleeping 12 and an adjacent separate cottage sleeping four.

In line with Lepogo Lodges’ commitment to conservation, Melote House serves as an exclusive-use private sanctuary, seamlessly combining high-end luxury with a focus on sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices.

“The design and detail of the house is exquisite, and the interiors have been beautifully and carefully curated to tell the story of Melote in the Lapalala Wilderness,” Hughes clarifies.

CONSCIOUS CONSERVATION

Passionate about wildlife conservation, Lepogo Lodges actively funds research and works closely with the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve. It wishes to establish the reserve as a centre of excellence for the release of wild cheetahs, alongside additional conservation of the ‘Awesome Eight’.

This work includes reintroducing the endangered cheetah into the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, and ongoing monitoring and research.

“Most recently, this has resulted in a successful breeding programme; the lodge was delighted when the first young male cheetah to reach adulthood went to Zambia to start his own gene pool there,” comments Hughes.

Additional conservation projects include land rehabilitation projects where Lepogo Lodges has purchased buffalos for the reserve, as the bovines do a great job of replenishing the habitat. It is also sponsoring a

pangolin rehabilitation centre (anticipated for completion in 2024), whilst species of rare antelope such as roan and sable have been reintroduced back into the reserve.

“Moreover, we’re excited to share that our own Lepogo Lodges honey is being served on our breakfast tables, and we are crafting our own gin using botanicals exclusively found around the reserve,” Hughes excites.

Lepogo Lodges is working on a number of other conservation projects on the reserve, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to conservation and sustainability, offering unique experiences for its guests while contributing to the local ecosystem and conservation for the future.

OFFSETTING EMISSIONS

Lepogo Lodges operates a self-generated electricity system through an original, bespoke solar walkway, which is believed to be the first of its kind in South Africa.

“The whole reserve is entirely off the grid – you won’t see a single power line in 50,000 ha of land. The lodge is designed with sensitivity, ensuring that only one percent of the building touches the land,” Hughes reveals.

Commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through the company’s reduce-reuse-recycle principle, with items such as slippers and survival bags in the villas crafted from recycled plastic bottles. Additionally, the lodge adheres to a no single-use plastic policy.

Furthermore, Lepogo Lodges has created its own carbon offset programme, which actively neutralises the footprint of every guest throughout their entire journey, from departing their homes to returning to their front door.

• Condé Nast Traveler – Readers’ Choice Awards 2022

Notably, the company is the first lodge in Africa to do this.

“Guests have the opportunity to calculate their specific carbon footprint with the lodge and then choose from a selection of projects for Lepogo Lodges to offset their footprint against. This personalised carbon offset process is carried out for every guest,” explains Hughes.

To facilitate this initiative, staff at Lepogo Lodges work to convert the calculated carbon emissions from a guest’s journey into a monetary figure. The team reviews the journey, calculates the emissions, and then presents the guest with the opportunity to choose one of three conservation projects for the lodge to offset their carbon footprint against.

Available Lepogo Lodges initiatives include the

Community Stove Project, which donates efficient stoves to local families, meaning that less wood is burnt for the same amount of heating.

“The Community Stove Project always seems to prove the most popular, and it is estimated that the project reduces the wood used in one household by up to 2.5 tonnes per year. This saves trees, hours spent collecting wood, and reduces emissions.”

The South African Reforestation Trust, meanwhile, focuses on indigenous tree species planting, whilst Stand for Trees is a global initiative protecting forest landscapes and their communities and wildlife.

“We work closely with the Lapalala Wilderness School’s community outreach scheme to donate to these projects,” Hugues proudly concludes.

SUSTAINABILITY STORIES

CASA DE OLIVOS

Perched on a hillside in rural Spain, visitors can enjoy the serene surroundings of Casa de Olivos. Co-Founders, Claire Bretten and Ed Deane speak about its ecotourism accommodation transformation

To experience total escapism from the everyday grind, travellers follow a less-worn path to the Spanish region of Maestrat. With its rolling hills overlooking Castellon Province, facing the little town of Traiguera and flanked by almond and olive groves, sits Casa de Olivos. This is authentic rural Spain, far away from the tourist hotspots of the crowded Costas.

“We are not classified as coastal, although the Costa Azahar (Orange Blossom coast) is only 15 minutes away by car. Casa de Olivos sits neatly on the border between the Spanish shore and the country’s interior, giving guests easy access to beaches, villages, and the landscape of the Maestrat, which includes extensive natural parks, forests, and mountains,” introduces Claire Bretten, co-Founder of

Casa de Olivos.

The accommodation has enough space to house up to six guests across two fully furnished, self-catering apartments, each with a unique style, blending Mediterranean and British influences.

“We don’t have any neighbouring properties overlooking, so there’s always a sense of privacy,” adds fellow co-Founder, Ed Deane.

Focusing on reservations for ages 12 and above, Casa de Olivos welcomes families, groups, and couples, and whilst some guests book with sustainability in mind, they all seek off-grid relaxation.

“Our position midway between Barcelona and Valencia makes us ideal for city-hopping travellers who need a few

days to chill. Casa de Olivos is the perfect antidote to the hectic pace and bustle of these two iconic Spanish cities. We have a soft spot for Valencia already, and now, as the EU Green Capital for 2024, we feel a particular synergy with this beautiful place,” Bretten divulges.

OLIVE ACTIVITIES

Casa de Olivos is in the heart of Castellon’s olive oil country, and with ever-present olive trees dating back thousands of years, the industry is of great importance to the town. Therefore, focusing on olives as an experience is a natural step for the business.

Traiguera is home to many millenary olive trees, which are still producing small fruits to this day. In particular, the Sinfo olive, estimated to be around 2,000 years old, is widely regarded as one of the best examples of these monumental trees in the Mediterranean region.

“We love these trees because they’re like time machines – touch the bark or stand in the shade of the boughs, and you are directly connected to a landscape and a living history preceding Roman times,” excites Deane.

“One of the three olive mills near Casa de Olivos runs experience days that include guided walks through these magnificent trees, and a tour of the olive mill that makes oil. It finishes with a tasting session, rounding off a truly multi-sensory experience,” Bretten elaborates.

Every Autumn at Casa de Olivos, guests have the chance to experience an olive harvest, during which they assist in collecting the crop, alongside visiting an olive mill to learn about taking the organic groves back to a productive state.

Moreover, Traiguera has a long history in pottery and two local artisans keep the tradition alive. Casa de Olivos has set up two unique experiences, including a hands-on pottery workshop where participants can create their own

masterpieces.

“We have also teamed up with Sali Garcia de Araoz to create artist workshop experiences. Sali is a local painter, particularly known for her local townscapes on silk and her olive trees in acrylic,” states Bretten.

ECO-FRIENDLY ETHOS

Recently, Casa de Olivos has been accepted into Castellon Cycling, an initiative aimed at encouraging cyclists to the province.

“The roads are quiet here, thanks to the low population. Similarly, we have hundreds of kilometres (km) of mountain bike trails through mixed terrain to suit all abilities, and we’ll be focusing on attracting walkers and cyclists next year to discover Castellon as a biking destination,” Deane reveals.

The costs are kept low to make the experiences more affordable and are payable directly to the supplier, so all proceeds go directly to the local businesses.

Casa de Olivos aims to attract more guests outside of the summer months as the climate is still agreeable. There is plenty of appeal for later in the season; the olive harvest is in full swing in November and December, and some of the most raucous festivals are held at a cooler time of year.

“We see the region as a year-round destination and are busy trying to communicate that through our proposition and marketing. Spain is not somewhere to flock to only in the summer holidays, but an amazing and varied country to visit any time of year,” Deane reveals.

“We are continuing to open up more land for our guests to roam and enjoy and have some lovely bench terraces which are typical to the landscape here. By removing some of the most invasive scrubs, we’ve created space for a more diverse natural flora to flourish,” Bretten continues.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2024

After achieving the Silver award with Green Tourism and a B grade with BioScore this year, Bretten and Deane would like to work towards improving Casa de Olivos’ grading.

Partnering with UK-based company Green Tourism was essential to Casa de Olivos’ journey towards sustainability with 70 indicators grouped under 15 goals. BioScore, meanwhile, is a Valencia-based agency working with tourist accommodation establishments worldwide to certify their sustainability, encompassing over 250 environmental, social, and governance issues.

“The sustainability journey is continuous,” explains Deane. “We have recognition at the provincial level already, having pushed the Casa Rural grading system hard during our registration. We like to think that Casa de Olivos has already gone some way to challenging the old norms, behaviours, and expectations, and represents a template of what is genuinely sustainable.”

In autumn 2024, Casa de Olivos expects to be tree planting on-site, using native species that complement the wider landscape, whilst providing a greater foothold for enhanced biodiversity.

“Beyond our local community of Traiguera, we are net zero citizens with the Tree Nation foundation, who manage tree planting projects all over the world,” reveals Bretten.

As owners and managers, Bretten and Deane have taken steps to inform, educate, and support themselves and their guests to achieve sustainable outcomes.

“We plan to develop passive education during our guests’ stay to inspire them towards reducing waste and recycling,” Deane emphasises.

There are also plans to signpost more information in the outdoor and wild spaces to inform visitors about biodiversity, native species, and natural heritage.

“Our relationship to the town of Traiguera and the local region has been enriched and deepened specifically because of the work we’ve been doing on sustainability,” Bretten informs us.

Due to Casa de Olivos’ ethics, Bretten and Deane have some lovely local friendships, and guests have better access to the experiences and facilities nearby.

“We have policies on diversity and inclusion, and that has

Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 35

led us to see our accommodation through the lens of those with mobility or cognitive challenges and work to make Casa de Olivos as accessible as possible,” Deane informs us.

FOOTPRINT ACCOUNTABILITY

Sustainable accommodation for Casa de Olivos means being off-grid with no connections by wire or pipe to any external services.

“This year, we harnessed around 7,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) from the sun alone, avoiding over 1.6 tonnes of CO2. Our backup generator accounts for less than 0.3 percent of our energy production, although there are plans to minimise that,” details Deane.

For guests, off-grid means no perceptible difference from being on-grid – they are not restricted in their use of electricity or water.

“Although we are generating over 99 percent of our electricity on-site from solar rays, we have to deal with the use of liquid propane gas (LPG) as a fuel source for hot water and room heating, but we are offsetting usage through the Terra Life scheme and investigating options for reducing and eventually eliminating our use of LPG,” reassures Bretten.

Environmentally, the business generates over 99 percent of its electricity from on-site solar arrays. It also monitors and manages its water consumption, relying heavily on

collected rainwater as a primary source.

“We have eliminated plastic water bottles from the site as our own water is potable and delicious. We have pushed back on the government’s presumption that air conditioning is necessary. We have demonstrated that our modern build, combined with passive measures, maintains a comfortable living temperature throughout the summer,” details Deane.

While Bretten and Deane don’t evangelise Casa de Olivos’ sustainable principles, they want people to know what it was founded on.

“Our mission for guests is wrapped up in our “escape, enjoy, be kind” philosophy, which firmly focuses on a positive experience while underscoring the sustainability ethic,” Bretten concludes.

There is a plethora of information to help people make sustainable choices to inform them about the work that Casa de Olivos has done, which might inspire them on their own journey towards sustainable living.

As a city on the rise, Calgary is a gold mine for flourishing cultural experiences, hearty and delightful culinary opportunities, and enviable hospitality that draws more and more visitors every year.

When basking in Calgary’s unique atmosphere, you may notice the name Cowtown bounced around the city. Denoted by the region’s embrace of wild western culture, it celebrates its cowboy roots every summer at the Calgary Stampede . The action-packed, 10-day event showcases one of the world’s largest rodeos, as well as a parade, countless carnival games, and stage shows, including the out-of-this-world Bell Grandstand Show Witness the ‘greatest show on earth’, offering dazzling lights and pyrotechnics, jaw-dropping stunts, and an electric atmosphere that attracts over a million visitors every year.

Just a stone’s throw away, hikers and wanderers can enjoy the beautiful, dramatic landscape of the Rocky Mountains. Even if mountain adventures aren’t for you, there are incredible sightseeing opportunities and you might even catch a glimpse of some iconic Canadian animals.

Travellers can also dig their winter warmers out of the cupboard in preparation for Chinook Blast , Calgary’s winter festival held in February every year. A wonderous and vibrant spectacle, the celebration showcases dynamic lighting, displays, music, and more, bringing together the arts, tourism, and sports.

Chinook Blast supports approximately 200 diverse local artists and creators and also features some unique cultural events and pop-up markets. The Indigenous showcasings at the festival are not to be missed and celebrate local talent and culture.

Many Indigenous tourism experiences can be found in and around Calgary. For example, you can visit Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park to immerse yourself in the strong culture of the Blackfoot people and gain a greater understanding through captivating art pieces and exhibitions at the historical signing site of Treaty 7.

As the city is currently experiencing an evolution into a world-class destination, make the most of what is widely regarded as the globe’s friendliest city.

TOURISM CALGARY Industry Insights

Calgary’s tourism industry generates approximately CAD$2.91 billion in visitor spending from more than eight million tourists every year. To support the burgeoning travel sector, Tourism Calgary, the official destination management organisation for the city, has been promoting the area as the perfect location for both leisure and business for over 60 years.

The organisation strives to promote Calgary as the ultimate host city, highlighting the area as a comprehensive travel destination to markets locally across Canada and the rest of the world. Cindy Ady,

tells us how Calgary is emerging as Canada’s top destination.

Outlook Travel (OT): Can you talk us through the origins of Tourism Calgary and the company’s founding mission?

Cindy Ady, CEO (CA): Our mission at Tourism Calgary is to inspire more people to visit the city for memorable experiences that celebrate our community, culture, and people. We pride ourselves on being the ultimate hosts, in an ultimate host city. This means we aim to exemplify Calgary’s community spirit by fostering a destination that is welcoming, innovative, and offers unique experiences.

As the official destination management organisation for Calgary, we work closely with industry and

CALGARY TRAVEL GUIDE 42 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

community partners to support, build, and foster the best possible visitor experience in the region.

Our team connects directly with travellers, providing advice during trip planning and while they are in the city.

In doing so, we support leisure and business visitors from around the world. We attract and host major sport and cultural events, as well as bringing thousands of delegates to Calgary annually for meetings and conventions.

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit Calgary?

CA: Calgary was recently honoured to be named the friendliest city in the world in the Condé Nast Traveller 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards. Visitors

feel the warmth the moment they get off the plane, as White Hat volunteers welcome travellers to the city. Throughout their time here, visitors are invited into the experiences and communities that make Calgary what it is.

The city’s offerings are highly diverse, featuring seven of Canada’s 100 best restaurants, worldclass museums, award-winning architecture, and the Rocky Mountains less than an hour away. It’s a destination for all types of travellers and as a region, we continue to invest in our current and future offerings, meaning more events, festivals, and memorable experiences to share with current and future visitors.

OT: What kind of travellers does the city appeal to the most?

CA: Calgary appeals to a wide range of travellers, from families and couples to solo adventurers and business professionals. Iconic attractions such as the Calgary Tower, Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, and TELUS Spark Science Centre are perfect for families. Couples and solo travellers will be delighted by our booming craft beverage scene with over 40 local craft breweries and distillers, creating award-winning beers and spirits. International travellers find a lot to love in Calgary, especially those interested in Western heritage. They’ll get to experience the real thing at the Calgary Stampede or at cultural gems

throughout the city like Heritage Park.

The city really does have something for everyone, in every season of the year. Winter adventure seekers will love the area, not only for sports but for events like Chinook Blast, Calgary’s premier winter festival. During our long summer days, the city is equally alive with excitement, coming together for almost every type of festival imaginable, including a number of well-known music events.

OT: How has the organisation worked towards putting Calgary on the map for potential visitors?

CA: Calgary is great at showing its community spirit and inviting visitors to be a part of it. As a symbol of our hospitality, visitors are sometimes ‘white-hatted’. In a fun ceremony, they receive an iconic white cowboy hat, a well-known symbol of the city’s hospitality, and become honorary Calgarians.

Notable recipients have included Queen Elizabeth II, the Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, and even Mickey Mouse, but we’ve also surprised visitors walking downtown with a spontaneous ceremony. We hope they take that experience with them when they return home to wherever they’re from.

The community has come together to really invest in the

tourism economy by creating beautiful meeting places and attractions. Two perfect examples of this include the new Central Library, as well as Studio Bell, home to the National Music Centre, comprising two stunning buildings that have helped revitalise Calgary’s East Village neighbourhood.

In 2024, the city will have the greatest amount of convention space in all of Western Canada with the opening of the new BMO Centre at Stampede Park, alongside the existing, unique spaces at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre and other meeting points in the city.

OT: What trends are currently reshaping the tourism industry in Calgary and the surrounding area?

CA: We find that travellers are looking for local experiences when planning their trips. The Calgary area increasingly caters to this with Indigenous tourism experiences, offering the chance for guests to learn about Indigenous culture and history.

This includes a wide array of experiences such as wilderness education and hands-on learning with partners like Painted Warriors, or an opportunity to see and create Indigenous artwork at Moonstone Creations. Visitors also have the opportunity during the summer to witness powwows from the Treaty 7 nations. These events are a place of celebration, sharing, dance, and pride for Indigenous cultures.

We also recognise that those travelling for work are looking to save on vacations by adding leisure time to business trips. Calgary is the perfect place for this type of ‘bleisure’ travel, given its proximity to the Rocky Mountains and six other UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

OT: Amongst the many events and attractions, what should visitors plan to see this winter?

CA: Calgary is an amazing winter city. You’ll have a wide choice of winter sports here, whether visitors prefer to go

fat biking along the Bow River, skating on a frozen lagoon at Bowness Park, or downhill skiing right in the city limits at WinSport.

For those looking for more cultural experiences, Chinook Blast showcases local artists, musicians, and entertainers as well as some unique cultural markets. The festival is a full-on winter celebration in the heart of our city.

Winter 2024 also brings some exciting events, all happening in the month of February. For example, Calgary will be hosting Nitrocross (car racing on ice), the Scotties Tournament of Hearts (annual curling competition), Snow Rodeo (an International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Cup event), the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024, and the International Skating Union (ISU) World Speed Skating Championships.

We’re also very excited to welcome two orphaned polar bears to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. Their arrival is part of a redeveloped Wild Canada experience, representing seven of the country’s ecological zones.

And of course, Calgarians are hockey crazy, so if the Calgary Flames are in town during your stay, you can catch a National Hockey League (NHL) game and cheer on the home team.

OT: In what ways have you integrated the influence of the Indigenous experience in Calgary’s list of things to do, and why is this important?

CA: When travellers come to Calgary, they are welcomed to the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. This is also homeland to the historic Northwest Métis as well as the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

Mohkinstsis is the Blackfoot name for Calgary, and there is a rich culture and history in this area. The confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers has been a meaningful place for many. You can learn about this special place from Indigenous educators at Fort Calgary.

By fostering and promoting Indigenous tourism, we collectively help preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage of these communities, while also facilitating important conversations. It’s a way to honour and celebrate

the traditions, stories, and practices of local Indigenous communities. For visitors, these experiences are not just recreational but also educational; they provide a meaningful opportunity to learn and participate in local Indigenous culture.

Tourism Calgary works closely with partners such as Indigenous Tourism Alberta as well as the Treaty 7 nations to develop and promote Indigenous-owned and operated businesses and experiences throughout the city and surrounding areas.

OT: Finally, in your opinion, what makes 2024 the year to visit Calgary?

CA: Visitors to the city in 2024 can expect a diverse selection of music, food, culture, and sports. The upcoming year is especially significant with the opening of the BMO Centre, Western Canada’s largest events and conference space, as well as the SAM Centre, a destination dedicated to making the Calgary Stampede a year-round experience.

With the level of investment happening in the city, and the collaboration we’re seeing on new events and festivals, Calgary has more experiences than ever on offer for potential visitors.

Guaranteed to remain unchanged is the warm and welcoming hospitality you’ll find in Calgary, no matter what time of year you decide to visit.

FOR A HOTEL WHERE CHIC MEETS MODERNITY…

With a vast array of rooms and suites on offer, The Dorian, Autograph Collection offers an appealing combination of contemporary décor, layered with distinguished liveliness. Each room is carefully and purposefully designed to incorporate elegant European fashion with British whimsicalness.

LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN Calgary, the hotel is inspired by the bygone era of Oscar Wilde, whilst reflecting the city’s transformation into a modern cultural hub. As such, The Dorian, Autograph Collection features the region’s fashionforward sensibilities, demonstrated by its state-of-the-art amenities and the handpicked use of materials throughout the hotel.

To accompany each stunning suite, The Dorian, Autograph Collection possesses three distinct restaurants, each with a diverse cuisine experience. The Wilde on 27 (located on the 27th floor of the hotel) takes diners on a tantalising tastebud journey.

Meanwhile, if a delightful drink is in order, why not take a saunter to the Prologue Café Cocktails, which perfectly combines early 20th century decadence with sultry social surroundings.

Finally, embracing The Dorian, Autograph Collection’s wider European influence, Bistro Novelle boasts an upbeat atmosphere and is the number one place to sample some of the world’s best wine. The distinguished menu also offers guests sustainable and fresh ingredients that suit any meal of the day and typifies the modern, forwardthinking vibe of the city.

Exactly Like Nothing Else

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, can you talk us through your personal journey and what brought you to The Dorian, Autograph Collection?

Ian Jones, Complex General Manager (IJ): I spent my childhood in a quaint town just north of Toronto. Thanks to my father’s job, our family had the opportunity to travel extensively, living in Denmark, Australia, and South Africa. These early experiences ignited my passion for the hotel industry. Growing up amid diverse cultures and witnessing various hospitality practices around the world profoundly influenced my career choice.

I’ve been fortunate to work in seven countries across four continents, contributing to the openings of five hotels and the rebranding of two. With my children reaching pivotal points in their education, one in

university and the other in high school, my family and I decided it was time to establish permanent roots. Calgary, being one of Canada’s most desirable destinations, became our chosen home.

Having observed The Dorian, Autograph Collection’s development from a greenfield site and closely followed its owner, PBA Group of Companies, for several years, I eagerly embraced the opportunity when Concord Hospitality reached out in search of a new General Manager. The Dorian, Autograph Collection stands out as one of the most unique hotels in the city, and it was the prospect of tackling this challenge that drew me to this exceptional property.

OT: What is it that drives you each day at The Dorian, Autograph Collection?

IJ: Creating enjoyable and engaging concepts is essential, ensuring that our associates find joy in their work every day. Simultaneously, these initiatives provide the city of Calgary and its visitors with a distinctive and enjoyable experience. All of this is accomplished while maintaining a focus on delivering substantial profits to

our exceptional owners, who envisioned and brought to life this magnificent hotel.

OT: In your opinion, what is the one thing you love the most about The Dorian, Autograph Collection?

Josh Dyer, Executive Chef (JD): The ability to let my creativity and artistry run free. I have been given carte blanche here at The Dorian, Autograph Collection to make it not only Calgary’s, but Canada’s premier dining destination, and we have but scratched the surface.

OT: Equally, what makes The Dorian, Autograph Collection unique from other hotels?

IJ: Our guest rooms are a testament to thoughtful design and attention to detail. From the wallpaper perfectly complementing the sofa to the specially branded linens, every element is curated to perfection. Yet, what truly sets us apart is our team.

The genuine and effortless way they connect with our guests is unparalleled. Our associates, who naturally engage with visitors, serve as our most effective sales

agents. When combined with our exceptional culinary team, it’s the warmth and dedication of our people that create a lasting impression, making the stay at our hotel truly unforgettable.

OT: How does The Dorian, Autograph Collection offer a travelling experience unlike any other?

JD: The Dorian is a mecca of culinary creativity here in Calgary, Alberta. With three restaurants, full-service inroom dining, and a curated events programme, our food and beverage experiences separate us from the rest.

OT: What makes The Dorian, Autograph Collection a true lifestyle hotel, combining the tasteful with the bold?

IJ: Our commitment to excellence extends to the meticulous design details in both the hotel and guest rooms. However, what truly sets us apart is the deeply personal connection our associates forge with our guests. From the moment they step into the hotel, we embrace them as part of our family. Throughout their stay, we guide them on a fabulous journey into the life of Dorian Gray, weaving this captivating narrative into numerous touchpoints and creating an experience that is not only luxurious but profoundly meaningful.

OT: How is The Dorian, Autograph Collection designed as a tribute to the life and works of Oscar Wilde, through a number of artistic nods?

IJ: The Dorian, Autograph Collection pays tribute to

Oscar Wilde’s life and works through a multifaceted approach that encompasses decor, art, literature, and thematic experiences. These artistic nods and our Mark of Craft create an immersive environment that celebrates the legacy of this renowned literary figure.

OT: What Calgary restaurants can The Dorian, Autograph Collection guests dine at, and how do they cater for every craving?

JD: Our lobby-level café, PROLOGUE, is a delightful patisserie during the day and transforms into an elegant champagne bar at night. It boasts a delectable selection of pastries crafted by our talented in-house team, led by Chef Hans Suarez. In an era where many hotels are cutting costs by closing their pastry kitchens, we take pride in the true artistry displayed by our young pastry team, consistently delivering exquisite creations day after day.

On our rooftop, WILDE on 27, under the guidance of Chef Kyle Opel, offers culinary masterpieces that are almost too beautiful to eat. Diners often pause, reluctant to disturb the artistic presentation with their forks. The visual appeal of the food is matched only by its exceptional taste.

None of this culinary magic would be possible without

the expertise of our service team, expertly led by Brye Ponto, our Restaurant Director. They engage guests with specially curated cocktails, while our Head Sommelier, Jason Exton, hailing from the UK, curates a wine list that perfectly complements our culinary delights. It’s akin to a symphony, and at times, I feel like the luckiest conductor, ensuring everyone has what they need to hit their personal marks and deliver a performance like no other.

PBA Group of Companies

OT: As the owner of The Dorian, Autograph Collection, what role has the hotel played in revitalising downtown Calgary?

Patricia Phillips, CEO (PP): With Calgary’s recent ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the world’s third most liveable city and its economic shift from the oil industry to a burgeoning tech hub, PBA Group of Companies (PBA) saw an opportunity to play a pivotal role in changing the city’s narrative and elevating its downtown district by providing a boutique luxury hotel that was reflective of a world-class city.

The Dorian, Autograph Collection has been a noteworthy development for a multitude of reasons. First off, it is the first hotel built in Calgary’s downtown core in over a decade. Secondly, the $110 million property is Calgary’s only female-developed and owned hotel. With less than two percent of hotels owned and operated by women worldwide, this is an impressive accomplishment and exemplifies PBA’s bold innovative thinking in creating unique, vibrant developments that advance the city’s economic growth and champion its cultural evolution.

Since opening our doors we’ve experienced strong

demand and steady traffic – bringing guests from around the globe and welcoming Calgarians to experience a taste of its city’s bright future.

OT: How does The Dorian, Autograph Collection embody PBA Group of Companies’ core values?

PP: The Dorian is a prime example of PBA’s culture and values in action.

Our strategy was built on the core values of collaboration and community. We understand the importance of ensuring the present and future needs of the larger community in our projects. Collaboration acts as an undercurrent in all our business practices. Team members are empowered to uphold the mindset that our company only wins when our people, partners and community win too.

When we announced our plans to create The Dorian, Autograph Collection back in 2018, Calgary looked a lot different. Our downtown core was lacking vibrancy and our city was on the precipice of a major transformation, redefining our identity by opening up to new industries, ideas, and innovations.

We saw an opportunity to change our city’s narrative. Calgary is a cultural hub with a rich arts and culture scene, a prominent culinary landscape, and expanding industries that are attracting a diverse mix of people, promoting an entrepreneurial spirit and fuelling a newfound energy.

This excited us because we knew our city deserved a world-class, luxury hotel. We took our role in shaping and strengthening Calgary’s cultural fabric seriously and we are extremely proud of the result.

OT: As PBA is all about making bold moves, what makes The Dorian, Autograph Collection a showstopper?

PP: Our vision was conceived in the spirit of celebrating the city. The playful theme of the hotel was thoughtfully planned around Oscar Wilde and his fictional character, Dorian Gray. The Dorian, Autograph Collection’s British charm and modern comfort, paired with Calgary’s hospitality, creates an unforgettable experience.

Throughout the process, we worked with local businesses to showcase the best Calgary has to offer, locally sourcing everything wherever possible. From the soaps and linens found in our guests’ rooms to the memorable, delectable food and beverages we serve and spectacular artwork in our hallways and gathering spaces, The Dorian, Autograph Collection is a true mosaic of Calgary.

By showcasing the best of Calgary, we can grow and solidify our reputation as an international destination with something uniquely special to offer.

Seychelles

Staggeringly seductive beaches, majestic marine life, and decadently distinct island culture lie in wait for explorers setting their sights on Seychelles, a truly unique utopia

WRITER: ED BUDDS |

PROJECT MANAGER: ALFIE WILSON

62 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Delicately sprinkled in the crystal-clear equatorial depths of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles is a wondrous marine maze of 115 islands, coming together to forge a beguiling archipelago.

A prehistoric cluster of dense jungle tumbles down to the turquoise sea, which fizzes and foams against bulking granite boulders as smooth as marble and caresses the immaculate sand of the nation’s pristine beaches.

As a country bestowed with a truly unique biodiversity, Seychelles is the only place in the world where the enormous Coco de Mer palm tree grows and, other than the Galapagos, where giant, majestic tortoises roam wild.

Seychelles continues to work tirelessly to preserve its diverse natural habitats, with entire islands set aside as nature reserves, meaning the copious luxury resorts don’t dominate or spoil the landscape, but rather seamlessly integrate into it.

Once visitors have been pampered to their heart’s content in the many world-class spas and soaked up the

vitamin “sea”, you can choose to spend days hiking through glorious forests of cinnamon and mahogany, seek out endemic wildlife, or mask up for some unforgettable diving and snorkelling fun.

As if this wasn’t enough, a vibrant Creole culture, forged from a historic mish-mash of pirates, explorers, and settlers of African, European, and Asian descent, hovers deliciously over every facet of the nation. Visitors can dine on spiceinfused curries and dance to the irresistible beat of the tam-tam drums beneath velvet night skies peppered with dazzling stars.

Industry Insights Tourism Seychelles

Tourism Seychelles, the nation’s tourism department, exists today as a catalyst for sustained tourism growth and development in Seychelles.

AS A STRATEGY-FOCUSED department, Tourism Seychelles is committed to creating a conducive environment for the development and maintenance of an authentic, dynamic, streamlined, and sustainable tourism industry.

That ongoing mission reflects the importance of tourism to the Seychelles economy and the social well-being of its population. This set of ambitions also delivers value for money and a unique visitor experience through innovation, strategic partnerships, and coordination, providing information, measured communication, and capacity development. We speak to Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary.

Outlook Travel (OT): Can you talk us through the origins of Tourism Seychelles and its initial vision?

Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary (SF): Tourism in Seychelles dates back to 1972 and the opening of the nation’s first international airport. Before then, a handful of visitors trickled in via the sea. The original tourism strap line was ‘unique by a thousand miles’ and spoke to the largely rustic experience it offered, combined with great authenticity and good old island charm.

OT: What are your organisation’s current goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

SF: We envision high value, low impact tourism. For this reason, a lot of our programmes focus on the diversification of our products and offerings, especially regarding

SHERIN FRANCIS, PRINCIPAL SECRETARY
SEYCHELLES TRAVEL GUIDE 64 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

offering more authentic experiences and ones with greater sustainability.

Currently, Seychelles, under its tourism strap line, ‘another world’, looks to offer an unrivalled experience of raw nature and a unique opportunity to engage with the Creole lifestyle via our rendezvous programme. For Seychelles, the environment and sustainability are extremely important to ensure a superior holiday experience for today and tomorrow. We achieve these goals by interacting with potential clients via our very active digital and social media platforms, along with trade fairs, workshops, and more.

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit Seychelles, and what for you defines the country?

SF: Seychelles is simply another world! With a population of only 100,000 and located off-the-beatenpath, our islands offer a basket of experiences that includes diving and snorkelling, sailing, hiking, worldbeating beaching, swimming, health and wellness, adventure sports, golf, gastronomy, and cultural immersion, all from a range of accommodation that includes 5-star opulence, large and small hotels, villas, local guesthouses, and self-catering. Seychelles truly has something for everyone!

OT: As a culturally vibrant nation, what type of travellers does Seychelles typically attract?

SF: Seychelles attracts a broad range of visitors from across the globe, from Europe to the Middle and Far

East. Visitors range from the wealthy to those on a budget. From empty nesters to young families and solo travellers, all these varieties are attracted to our land of perpetual summer where harmony is a way of life.

OT: What does the nation offer in terms of sustainable or eco-friendly travel experiences? Do you have any goals in place regarding this?

SF: Sustainability and eco-travel are important components of our tourism makeup, and we take great pains to nurture them. Some of our smaller islands offer exceptional eco-experiences and it’s crucial to not forget that over 50 percent of our limited landmass is set aside as natural reserves and marine parks. We are conscious of the fact that the newer generation of travellers seeks out these experiences and we are well positioned to provide them with what they are looking for.

OT: What recent trends are currently transforming tourism in Seychelles?

SF: Experience travel has evolved into a large economy, and at present, we also have more and more visitors looking to escape normal life and enjoy a digital detox.

OT: Are you optimistic about the future of the tourism industry in Seychelles, particularly with regards to bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic?

SF: Seychelles has a resilient brand that resonates strongly in the tourism

world. Obviously, we are not in control of adverse international events such as wars, pandemics, and economic downturns in certain parts of our market, but we remain confident that our brand can deliver and are determined to do so.

OT: Are there any particularly unique experiences or underrated activities that the country has to offer, which are perhaps lesser known?

SF: Seychelles is a land of secrets, and we offer many opportunities to interact with raw nature via our network of walks, trails, and stunning range of marine parks.

Additionally, our Seychelles Creole cuisine is delicious, and foodies will love the experience of dining with their feet in the sand at restaurants dotted about the islands. We offer adventure sports such as zip lining and horseback riding, but you can’t beat a sunset cruise with a cocktail in hand to enjoy the coastline in much the same way as the first explorers of the islands.

The d’Offay brothers, Richard and Bernard, founded Takamaka 20 years ago and it has since become part of the archipelago’s identity. The distillery on the 18th-century La Plaine St Andre estate produces a handful of tipples blended with local spices and fruit extracts, but by far the most popular are the easy-drinking coconut rum and amber-hued eight-year-old St André aged in American oak barrels. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the distillery and gardens with a tasting workshop available on weekdays.

Getting There and Around

WHEN EXPLORING SEYCHELLES, most travellers wish to visit more than just one of the country’s numerous islands, as each destination features a uniquely vibrant personality and promises fresh experiences. Furthermore, it is essential to meticulously plan your island-hopping transportation and strategise carefully when navigating between islands.

If you plan to explore more than one of Seychelles’ many islands, riding the ferry is your best bet.

Almost all visitors flying to the Seychelles will arrive at Mahé International Airport. Daily ferry connections from Mahé can be caught to the other two main islands of La Digue and Praslin, the latter of which also benefits from an inter-island flight connection courtesy of Air Seychelles. It is advisable to book ferry tickets in advance, as connections can vary and change quickly.

On La Digue, meanwhile, bikes are the transport mode of choice. This tropical biking paradise prides itself on using the bicycle as its main form of travel, and it is very much part of the La Digue way of life. Indeed, there are only 60 cars on this entire island of 3,000 people. Partake in this local tradition by renting bikes to explore the island!

Elsewhere, the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation provides efficient bus services on Mahé and Praslin, two of Seychelles’ three most visited islands. Buses run every day from 5:30am to 8:30pm, with rides costing a reasonable flat rate for the day.

If you plan on using the bus as your primary mode of transportation, it would be wise to consider purchasing a SMART Card, where you can top up your travel balance seamlessly.

KENYA TOURISM BOARD

THE KENYA TOURISM Board (KTB) provides a service which is invaluable to the strengthening of the country, as the sole body in charge of Kenya’s world renowned but ever-increasing tourism market. The board achieves this thanks to a passion for providing its visitors with the most enriching experience possible, whilst ensuring the ongoing sustainability of the planet and the country’s wildlife. John Chirchir, Acting CEO of KTB, tells us how the organisation has continued to grow and develop its tourism sector.

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, can you talk us through the origins of KTB and its initial vision?

John Chirchir, Acting CEO (JC): KTB is a state corporation established and

regulated under sections 29-39 of the Tourism Act, 2011.

Our mandate includes developing, implementing, and co-ordinating Kenya’s national tourism marketing strategy. We market Kenya locally, nationally, regionally, and internationally as a premier tourist destination. We also identify tourism market needs and trends, and advise tourism stakeholders accordingly.

The initial vision was to be the preferred destination for diverse, innovative, and authentic experiences. This vision has further evolved to position Kenya as the most visited tourism destination in Africa, offering sustainable, memorable, and authentic experiences.

76 | Outlook Travel Issue 15 KENYA TRAVEL GUIDE
John Chirchir, Acting CEO

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit Kenya? What makes it stand out from other tourist destinations in Africa?

JC: Hospitality is in our nature, and the Kenyan people love visitors. The country is a diverse, authentic, sustainable, year-round destination where travellers can enjoy a different experience every day.

Kenya stands out as an iconic destination in Africa, offering the best of beach, bush, and city experiences, as well as active and sustainable travel options for the discerning traveller. Most visitors come to Kenya for its iconic and authentic wildlife experiences and return for its people.

Kenya is the original home of the safari and was recognised as the leading safari destination in 2013 and subsequently on seven consecutive occasions from 2015 to 2021 by the World Travel Awards.

We have 27 national parks, 34 national reserves, and four national sanctuaries. We are home to the ‘cradle of mankind’ and recognised by palaeontologists globally for

archaeological discoveries in the country, thus contributing to the story of human evolution.

Kenya is also the home of not only the iconic Maasai community, but 41 other communities contributing to our hospitable, friendly, and welcoming nature. We carve out a uniqueness from the rest because of attributes such as our year-round warm weather, the warmth of our people, as well as good connectivity and diverse tourism offerings that cater to all visitor requirements.

OT: What kind of travellers does your country appeal to most?

JC: Kenya has for a long time appealed to travellers from all over the world.

A good number of tourists visiting the country have grown to become loyal and repeat visitors to Kenya with their travel motivations centring on sun and sea, with safari and beach being among their preferred tourism experiences.

We have also noted the growing travel potential among young travellers who are keen on

activity-oriented travel opportunities. Hence, we seek to position Kenya as a great place for adventure travel.

In addition, the growing affinity by visitors to experience different cultures and heritage of the destination has created tremendous opportunities for various communities to benefit directly from tourism.

OT: Which national park would you suggest for visitors who wish to see the true essence of Kenyan wildlife?

JC: Having been widely recognised as one of the best parks in Kenya, Watamu Marine Park and Reserve is the haven of green turtles. It houses a spectacularly diverse, aquatic ecosystem with over 100 types of coral and 600 fish species, among other marine species. This makes the reserve a favourite underworld destination amongst maritime and deep-sea enthusiasts.

Kenya has also become synonymous for the wildebeest migration that takes place from July to November, which is acknowledged as the Seventh Natural Wonder of the World.

Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 77
Elsa’s Kopje

We are also home to the twin migration, with the Humpback Whales migrating from Antarctica to warmer climates, congregating in Kenyan waters between July and August to calve and mate at the Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve. After spending two months breeding and nursing their calves, Humpback Whales then make the journey back to Antarctica around September.

The Meru National Park too offers breathtaking and complete wilderness experiences. The park is famous for the Joy Adamson’s ‘Born Free’ story that details her life and research amongst lions and cheetahs. Elsa, the famous lioness, has her grave marked inside the park and is famously known in Hollywood for the Born Free movie, which is considered a timeless classic.

OT: Alternatively, what is the country’s most underrated attraction?

JC: Kenya has a number of vibrant cities, some of the most well-known being Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu,

and Nakuru. Starting with the capital, Nairobi is a city filled with urban experiences, superb cuisine, and a buzzing nightlife, which makes for a great stopover while en-route to or from a safari. It is Kenya’s very own “Green City in the Sun”.

Mombasa is rich in its culture, history, and endless white sandy beaches, owing to its 480 kilometre

(km) coastline. In fact, the true heart of Mombasa is in the culture of the people, the pristine beaches, exotic old town, narrow winding streets, and Arab architecture.

Meanwhile, Kisumu is a port city on the shores of Lake Victoria with wide streets and fine colonial architecture. The best way to appreciate the beauty of this region is on the lake itself,

Elsewhere, Nakuru is Kenya’s third largest city and home to the pink flamingos, thousands of which are attracted by its algae-filled soda lake. The region is among Kenya’s most beautiful wildlife havens and is known to be a birders paradise.

The majestic Mount Kenya, an ancient extinct volcano, is the secondhighest peak in Africa after Kilimanjaro at 5,199 metres (m).

The Mount Kenya region has one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa with three major peaks –Batian (5,199m), Nelion (5,188m), and Lenana (4,984m) – and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is endowed with flora and fauna and is home to many endemic species, including those threatened with extinction like the Abbott’s Starling, bongo, and black rhino, among others.

OT: Given KTB hosted the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) earlier in the year, how does the organisation incorporate sustainability into the country’s tourism landscape?

JC: As a nation, we continue to outline our commitment to support climate change and sustainability across all sectors, including tourism. We are currently implementing the COP26 declarations on sustainability and climate change and have committed to restricting the use of fossil-fuelled vehicles within all national parks and reserves to usher in fully renewable energy by 2030. We are also working

with the hospitality and tourism facilities in Kenya to adopt renewable energy and a circular economy in their operations by 2030.

In 2017, Kenya banned single use plastic bags to address the challenges posed by pollution. Already, some of the facilities in the parks and national reserves have introduced electric vehicles (EVs) and adopted solar energy. The eco-rating of our facilities has also entrenched the culture of sustainable tourism practices.

KTB has a sustainability committee in place and incorporates responsible tourism aspects in its key programmes and activities, such as the Magical Kenya Signature Experiences Collection criteria.

OT: How would you say the Kenyan tourism industry has changed over the last five years?

JC: The destination has become more customer and experiencecentric. We ensure travel businesses are informed on the emerging trends that are influencing travellers’ choices in destinations. We have also adopted a proactive approach in defining and highlighting Kenya’s unique and diverse tourism offering through the introduction of the Magical Kenya Signature Experiences Collection. Technology has also resulted in the automation and introduction of digitally driven tourism experiences, further enhancing the customer’s journey to and within the destination.

OT: Following this, what trends are currently transforming the tourism industry in Kenya, and how are you harnessing them?

JC: The trends transforming the tourism industry in Kenya include the search for sustainable travel options, alongside other meaningful experiences that are off-the-beatentrack. As such, travellers are seeking experiences beyond the usual tourist circuits, such as incorporating adventure and cultural experiences into the standard safari and beach packages.

Kenya is enhancing its culture and heritage tourism offering to ensure its visitors experience the uniqueness of the various communities, enabling a greater connection with Kenyans.

80 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

The growing popularity of culinary experiences has seen Kenya excel in providing visitors with memorable and appetising cuisines. Additionally, events and festivals such as the World Rally Championship, Magical Kenya Golf Open, Lamu and Turkana Festivals, among others continue to contribute towards the growing

interest from travellers in visiting Kenya.

The current tourism industry is becoming increasingly digital, reaching and connecting all generations. Our campaigns and content will feature in more digital platforms to reach as many targeted audiences as possible.

OT: Finally, how do you foresee Kenya’s tourism sector developing in 2024?

JC: As a destination, we will continue to grow and increase brand visibility for our magical country. We will continue to establish ourselves as the leading competitive destination by offering diverse tourism experiences. Our focus is to constantly meet and exceed the expectations of the everchanging traveller with an emphasis on sustainable tourism practices and offering meaningful experiences. We will also carry on highlighting Kenya’s diversity in terms of local destinations and product ranges, providing a whole array of experiences for travellers to choose from.

Gede Ruins

Heralded as Kenya’s national monument in 1927, the eerie yet spectacular Gede Ruins are the remains of a Swahili town and were discovered in 1948 by famous archaeologist, Louis Leakey. Adorned with sweeping arches, crumbling walls, ruined palaces, and bygone houses, the famous archaeological site dates back to the 12th century and represents the shadows of what was once a bustling city.

Bomas of Kenya

Located just outside Nairobi, the Bomas of Kenya is a fascinating and culturally enriching site of traditional homesteads, spanning 23 different ethnic groups. First erected in the 1970s, it aims to promote Kenyan culture to the many that visit every year, offering a guided tour of the homesteads and expanding horizons, with traditional dances and songs performed in a stunning circular theatre.

Getting There and Around

TRAVELLING AROUND

THE wonders of Kenya couldn’t be easier thanks to the plethora of transport options available. The most prominent form of travel by far is the bus network, which goes through nearly every town in Kenya, particularly in the west, with frequent travel between Nairobi and the coast. However, it would be advisable to take the journey during the day to avoid any criminal activity, particularly in sparsely populated areas.

If you are travelling further afield, taking the train would be your best option. For example, the Madaraka Express travels across 13 destinations between Mombasa and Suswa, offering a stress-free experience.

Alternatively, matatus are brightly-coloured, privately owned minibuses that are shared forms of transport for the local people. They are mostly used in Nairobi as an affordable form of travel.

Another option is shared taxis, which have a total capacity of up to nine passengers. Similar to the matatus, they depart once they are full and don’t stop between destinations, making them the perfect way to zip around the cities of Northern and Western Kenya.

Finally, boda bodas are ideal for zooming through Kenya’s winding streets in an authentic, cost-effective way. It would best to use these compact bikes if you are an experienced motorcyclist, as helmets are not always offered, and the bikes have limited health and safety regulations.

Lech Zürs

With perfectly groomed slopes and white mountains against a backdrop of bright sunshine and blue skies, the tranquil region of Lech Zürs awaits winter sports enthusiasts in the heart of Ski Arlberg

WRITER: JACK SALTER | PROJECT MANAGER: DAVE WEST

LECH ZÜRS TRAVEL GUIDE 88 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

As the largest continuous ski resort in Austria and one of the most extensive in the world, Ski Arlberg is an iconic location for alpine skiing that features more than 300 kilometres (km) of downhill slopes.

Lech Zürs’ diverse terrain offers everything a winter sports enthusiast could wish for, from wide, family-friendly slopes to speedy racetracks for those seeking a challenge.

The White Ring has been an integral part of the skiing experience in Lech Zürs for more than 60 years, a legendary 22km circuit that leads you along six of the most beautiful, thrilling slopes around the Omeshorn mountain and links the villages of Lech, Zürs, Zug, and Oberlech.

Amid continuous development, Lech has managed to preserve its quintessential mountain village charm to the delight of visitors. It is now one of the most popular holiday regions in the world, attracting guests from all over the globe with its long-established customs, tranquil charms, and

warm hospitality that belies Lech’s snowy surroundings.

Zürs, meanwhile, can justifiably be described as a powder snow paradise, where skiers are always at the heart of the action in perfect conditions.

The village is home to elegant hotels, in front of which guests can strap on their skis and head straight out to the slopes and lifts.

As the cradle of alpine skiing, Zürs boasts a storied history as an elite destination for winter sports dating back to the turn of the 20th century.

The time for indulgence, however, begins the moment you unbuckle your ski boots. From outstanding gourmet restaurants and atmospheric parlours serving regional dishes, to elegant wine cellars and trendy cocktail bars, Zürs is all about uniting breathtaking nature with perfect service, comfortable hotels, and top-quality establishments.

Lech Zürs Tourist Board

A winter wonderland surrounded by snow-covered mountains, Lech Zürs is the ideal starting point for adventure, enjoyment, and relaxation. We speak to Hermann Fercher, Tourism Director and CEO of the Lech Zürs Tourist Board, about the region’s unique character.

HERMANN FERCHER, TOURISM DIRECTOR AND CEO
90 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, can you talk us through the evolution of Lech Zürs as a destination?

Hermann Fercher, Tourism Director and CEO (HF): Within a few decades, Lech Zürs has managed to evolve from a mountainside farming village into an international tourist hotspot, without losing any of its essential cultural values or village character. The naturally grown destination owns a maximum of 10,000 beds and is characterised by a variety of accommodation establishments – from 5-star hotels to fine, small guesthouses. Lech Zürs also benefits from the brand image of the Arlberg, which became world-famous through its skiing history and pioneering

achievements. The sporting successes of the likes of Trude Jochum Beiser, Egon Zimmermann, and Patrick Ortlieb have generated notoriety, both in the past and now. Lech Zürs has been the backdrop for world-famous movies and a popular retreat for celebrities from the film and music business. Public figures help to shape the international brand image of Lech Zürs and attract media representatives from around the world.

OT: What are your organisation’s current goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

HF: The Lech Zürs Tourist Board focuses on internationalisation

and the “Refuge for Private Luxury Moments” brand positioning, which stands for a place of retreat where you can find real privacy and spend highquality time with family and friends. This is noticeable once you visit Lech Zürs, setting the destination apart from other top players in the region.

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit Lech, and what for you defines the village?

HF: Oscar Wilde once said: “I’m a man of simple tastes – I’m always satisfied with the best.” In Lech Zürs, it’s the attention to detail that makes the sweet difference.

Arlberg is considered the birthplace of alpine skiing – an historic meeting

place in the heart of the Alps.

Lech Zürs has always been a hub at the intersection of winter sports, art, and culture. A symbol of this is the White Ring, the legendary ski circuit and one of the world’s longest ski races. Other notable pursuits include heli-skiing, where your heart beats faster the higher you climb as the helicopter lifts off. Elsewhere, an underground walk-in installation by world-famous artist James Turrell focuses the perception of light and space. Freedom of thought and a passion for culture are essential

components to Arlberg’s white seasons. The calendar of events at Lech Zürs encompasses everything from Arlberg Weinberg to the Tanzcafé Arlberg Music Festival. A lot of space and time is dedicated to the region’s cultural history and contemporary creativity. Lech Zürs is its own little world, whose size cannot be measured in square metres.

Summer in Lech Zürs is a voyage of discovery juxtaposed between high mountains and high culture, adventure and gourmet food, thrills and spills, and peace and quiet.

Majestic alpine peaks tower over everything with jagged rocks and green forests, lending an air of magic that fascinates and inspires. Lech Zürs is a perfect setting for intellectual exchange between creatives, philosophers, and medical experts, a powerhouse for musicians, painters, and writers, and a place of longing. Summer here has so much to offer. Balls fly at golf tournaments and on the tennis courts, tyres squeal at the vintage car rallies, and feet dance at village festivals and concerts. Sometimes, just the cool water of the mountain lakes or forest swimming pools are enough for a happy summer day under the Arlberg sun. More time and more space – that is what Lech Zürs promises its guests year-round. Here, all the colours and fragrances really come into their own in spring and summer.

LECH ZÜRS TRAVEL GUIDE 92 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

As a culturally vibrant destination, the area attracts people from all over the world who appreciate the quality of the ski resort, in addition to the hospitality and service quality in its restaurants and hotels.

OT: What does Lech Zürs offer in terms of sustainable or eco-friendly travel experiences? Do you have any goals in place regarding this?

HF: For decades, Lech Zürs has been a pioneer of sustainable development, benefitting both mankind and nature.

Our aim is, and remains, the preservation of the unique character of the locality, and the protection of its environment in the long term. To this end, strict building regulations and thorough planning carry this vision forward. One thing remains true: less is more. By limiting ourselves to just 10,000 guest beds, Lech Zürs is committed to consciously promoting quality tourism. In doing so, we conserve resources, maintain the natural landscape, and promote agriculture. It’s nice to know that miracles still happen in the lofty heights of the Arlberg.

Renewable energy sources fuel biomass heating plants in Lech, Zürs, Oberlech, and Zug, producing enough energy to supply almost 100 percent of all households and businesses with warm, cosy heat. The root of this concept, which is admired nationwide, dates back to the 20th century.

Lech Zürs’ public transport system has been future-ready since the 1990s; the local bus system kicked off in the summer of 1997, with four buses servicing two lines. Within just two-and-a-half years, the “Blue Fleet”, which is now part of the fabric of the town, had already transported more than one million passengers. To this day, this comfort-oriented service continues to shape the village’s mobility. As a result, more and more locals and guests are leaving their cars at home and instead opting for the free ski bus.

Lech Zürs has also been at the cutting edge of electromobility. E-bikes and e-scooters have been available to rent since the summer of 2011. One year later, the first e-filling station opened its doors. The 2018/19 winter season was a groundbreaking milestone: In cooperation with BMW and Vorarlberger Kraftwerke AG, Europe’s first fully electric “Green Garage” was constructed. One year later, electromobility came full circle as the Blue Fleet tested an electric bus for public transport. All aboard! Notably, the future of mobility in Lech Zürs is emissions-free.

Since the spring of 2020, SkiZürs-AG has operated all cable cars,

chairlifts, mountain restaurants, and snow-making facilities with 100 percent TÜV-certified green electricity. With this clean energy solution, Ski-Zürs-AG eliminates around 1,265 tonnes (t) of CO2 emissions and radioactive waste and makes an important contribution to protecting the environment, whilst fulfilling Vorarlberg’s aspirations for energy autonomy.

In Oberlech, this vision has been a reality since 1997 thanks to a concept unique in Europe. While winter guests float emission-free from Lech to Oberlech via cable car, a green tunnel system whisks guests to their hotels. From December to April, this

sustainable transport system ensures that the entire district is free from emissions, traffic, and noise. Moreover, goods heading to and from the hotels are transported exclusively by electric cars.

Lech’s ski lifts are also innovative as they provide a useful agricultural link. Since 2008, Scottish Highland cattle have been bred to graze on steep slopes to prevent avalanches. The Schottenhof farm in Oberlech, built at an altitude of 1,760 metres (m) above sea level, is regarded as an ultra-modern alpine farm, showcasing future-oriented methods. In the mountains, the cycle of sustainability comes full circle as meat produce

94 | Outlook Travel Issue 15 LECH ZÜRS TRAVEL GUIDE

from of highland cattle is used in local gastronomy.

The local restaurants and their guests appreciate milk sourced from Lech. The same goes for yoghurt, cream cheese, or the hay milk ice cream made by the local baker. Whether as producers of regional delicacies or managers of the region’s characteristic cultural landscape, Lech’s farmers are potentially the most impressive representatives of sustainability in action.

The recipes of award-winning chefs feature regional ingredients, butchers and bakers know their local suppliers by name, and alpine huts cater to individual guests instead

of attempting to satisfy the masses. In Lech Zürs, sustainability is less about energy figures and emission values, and more about how people meaningfully do business and meet each other.

OT: Are you optimistic about the future of the tourism industry in Lech Zürs, particularly with regard to bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic?

HF: With the development of the Lechwelten Convention Centre, Lech Zürs will be able to offer a wellrounded portfolio from June 2024. Lech is a global village, with guests from all over the world. The events

that take place here underscore the cosmopolitan nature of the location and its drive to provide a worthy venue for ideas, discourse, and innovation. With years of experience in catering to guests from all over the world, Lech meets the highest standards.

OT: Are there any particularly unique experiences or underrated activities that Lech has to offer, which are perhaps lesser known? This could be a scenic natural attraction, restaurant or hotel that you would personally recommend.

HF: The Skyspace-Lech, by light artist James Turrell, is a largely underground structure that blends naturally into the landscape. The Oval Main Room has an oval opening in the ceiling, whilst a circular bench, like the floor, is lined with black granite. After dusk falls, the light installation in the room bathes the walls and ceilings in moving, coloured lights, so that the spatial structure, which was previously perceived as clean, seems to dissolve.

Per capita, Lech Zürs boasts the world’s highest density of awardwinning restaurants. Though at first glance Arlberg may seem cosy and small, make no mistake – top-class cuisine awaits.

Since the golf course in Zug opened in 2016, the dream of golfing in crystal-clear mountain air on the Arlberg has come reality. Stylishly and harmoniously embedded within the alpine landscape of the Zugertal valley, the sophisticated nine-hole, handicap-friendly course boasts thrilling new vistas of surrounding pristine nature at every tee.

Kitzbühel Tourism

The tasks of Kitzbühel Tourism include strategic planning for the area, tourism marketing, the infrastructural attractiveness of the region, and securing the support of its members in the creation of guest services and event management. Viktoria Veider-Walser, Executive Director, tells us more.

Outlook Travel (OT): Can you talk us through the origins of Kitzbühel Tourism and its initial vision?

Viktoria Veider-Walser, Executive Director (VVW): We could say that the history of tourism in Kitzbühel began primarily with summer tourism. Tourism in Kitzbühel started in the

early 1850s with the concept of ‘Sommerfrische’, meaning summer retreat. Boasting two train stations and the Grand Hotel, Kitzbühel became a popular summer destination for people from all over the world. However, the town’s tourism landscape began to evolve in 1893,

when Franz Reisch laid the foundation for skiing in Kitzbühel, leading to the rise of the renowned Hahnenkamm races. Since then, Kitzbühel has gained fame as an exclusive winter sports destination and has established itself as one of the most prestigious holiday resorts.

OT: What are your organisation’s current goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

VVW: Kitzbühel Tourism focuses on strengthening its brand identity and supports initiatives that align with our defined target groups. Another key responsibility is to consistently meet expectations for quality and convenience, thereby maintaining the strength of our brand. Kitzbühel Tourism actively promotes itself as the perfect spot for holidays and executive meetings, but is also responsible for infrastructure projects like the upkeeping of hiking trails and so on. A primary goal is to cater to

the needs and desires of our guests in Kitzbühel by creating unique experiences and opportunities. One of our responsibilities is therefore organising and hosting our events, for example the KITZ Kulinarik Festival, Kitzbühel Klassik, Kitzbühel Advent, and many more. Emphasising all-year-round tourism is crucial for Kitzbühel. Our objective is to sustain interest and accessibility to sporting activities throughout all seasons for both tourists and locals. Importantly, our aim extends beyond serving tourists; we also strive to foster a positive attitude towards tourism among the local community.

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit Kitzbühel, and what defines the location?

VVW: There are numerous reasons to visit Kitzbühel, which is self-

proclaimed as the most legendary destination in the Alps since 1850 and is a unique blend of tradition and lifestyle. It offers unspoiled nature and a wide array of sports, allowing visitors to experience the charm and distinctive approach to life in Kitzbühel. The town hosts year-round events, ensuring it’s always lively. Renowned as the most awarded ski resort in the Alps, Kitzbühel also boasts a range of culinary delights, from high-end to traditional options. A standout feature of Kitzbühel is its local craftsmanship, exemplified by master tailor Franz Prader. The town’s unique contrasts are evident in the variety of events it hosts, ranging from intimate gatherings like Pura Vida and KITZ Kulinarik to large-scale events such as the Hahnenkamm race. If you prefer to enjoy the silence, there are many hideaways.

OT: As a culturally vibrant destination, what type of travellers does Kitzbühel typically attract?

VVW: Kitzbühel is known for attracting an international clientele. Since the 1850s, Austrians and Germans have loved to spend their time in our beautiful region all year long. The “Gamsstadt” is also well known in many other countries: British visitors have been frequenting Kitzbühel for more than 170 years, along with travellers from the US, Australia, various European countries, the Middle East, and Scandinavia. It’s evident that travellers to Kitzbühel value the excellent blend of sports and lifestyle that the city offers. The convenient location, close to three airports, facilitates easy access for visitors, making it a popular destination in both summer and winter.

OT: What does Kitzbühel offer in terms of sustainable or eco-friendly travel experiences? Do you have any goals in place regarding this?

VVW: I believe that sustainability is a crucial factor in the travel industry, yet it needs to present a win-win situation to entice the majority of guests to opt for sustainable choices.

Kitzbühel has set multiple objectives towards becoming more sustainable. Significant investments have been made by our cable car company, KitzSki. Notably, Kitzbühel is the only ski resort with three train stations. The Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith golf course avoids using pesticides and has established a 2,000 square-

metre (sqm) flower meadow to support bee colonies. A notable achievement was realised in late summer 2022, when 45 kilogrammes (kg) of honey was harvested. The regional KitzShop offers products from Austrian producers, and Kitzbühel Tourism engages in sustainable advertising, such as campaigns in collaboration with CO2free billboard companies in Vienna.

OT: What recent trends are currently transforming tourism in Kitzbühel, and more broadly across the region?

VVW: Generally, the average length of stay is decreasing. Consequently, Kitzbühel Tourism, along with other tourism boards, faces the challenge of attracting more visitors. We’ve noticed that travellers are increasingly conscious of environmental responsibility and the value of local products. The demand for local products and craftsmanship is growing. People get more sensitive

about how sustainable we act, and a new understanding of luxury is established. To capture this trend, we’ve featured local heroes and personalities in Kitzbühel on our KitzBlog and on social media, which give you an insight into their work and their passion for what they do. These individuals contribute in various ways to the unique lifestyle of Kitzbühel.

OT: Are you optimistic about the future of the tourism industry for Kitzbühel, particularly with regard to bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic?

VVW: One of the sectors which has suffered the most from the pandemic has been the tourism sector. Still, bad times in combination with creative thinking can generate the best results. Challenging times often require innovative thinking, creative solutions, and at the same time, a lot of responsibility and accountability.

OT: Are there any particularly unique experiences or underrated activities that Kitzbühel has to offer, which are perhaps lesser known?

VVW: Depending on individual preferences, Kitzbühel offers a variety of activities. One of my favourites is watching the sunset at the Seidlalmsee.

Another personal highlight is the Kitzbüheler Horn in March, where there’s plenty of sunlight. For those seeking adventure and adrenaline, I highly recommend mountain bikes and road bikes on the steep road up onto the Kitzbüheler Horn, or taking an ice bath in the Schwarzsee.

For lunch, I suggest places like Huberbräu and Rasmushof – you won’t be disappointed. Kitzbühel is not only about sports activities; it’s also known for local manufacturers such

as the fashion store Frauenschuh and the goldsmith Margarete Klingler. Another unique experience is visiting the local farm store, Unsere Kiste. Additionally, the KitzShop is worth exploring.

For skiing enthusiasts, an insider tip is to start your ski day at 08:30am to enjoy moments of freedom and peace. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find the sports trail at the Kitzbühel Schwarzsee-Reith golf course appealing, especially as it’s illuminated until 9:30pm.

Azerbaijan

Due to its geographic location, Azerbaijan is a country of versatility. Whether it’s the landscape or its culture, European influences collide with diverse tastes

AZERBAIJAN TRAVEL GUIDE 114 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Straddling Western Asia and Eastern Europe, Azerbaijan is a versatile land, not just geographically but culturally. It is where ancient and modern, mountains and beaches, and urban and rural charm and amaze travellers.

The country has also acquired an alternative moniker of the Land of Fire due to its vast oil and natural gas supplies. It was once a centre of fire worshipping, and fire is one of the symbols of its capital city.

Furthermore, fire has been deeply ingrained in Azerbaijani culture and mythology since the inception of Zoroastrianism, one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, which took root 3,000 years ago. Encompassing multiethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious communities, Azerbaijan is a largely secular country. Zoroastrian customs are present in contemporary culture, as fire temples burning with sacred flames present a window to the past of a land forever at a crossroads of people, continents, and faiths.

One of Azerbaijan’s most famous sites is Yanar Dag (Fire Mountain), where flames blaze continuously on the Absheron Peninsula. The country has many different

climate zones, and with its deep and intriguing history, the natural landscape is dramatic. It provides a calming backdrop of beauty whilst swimming in the Caspian Sea or relaxing on a soft-sanded spot on the black beaches in Lankaran.

Alongside the cobbled streets of the Medieval Old Town in the capital city of Baku, relish the magnetic contemporary architecture of the iconic Flame Towers and the futuristic Heyder Aliyev Centre, designed by worldrenowned architect, Zaha Hadid.

Azerbaijan seamlessly blends Eastern charm with a Western perspective; the legacy of the Silk Road can still be found at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, with local artisans making crafts.

Whether you’re drawn to scenic hikes, top-tier wellness resorts, award-winning wines, or rich traditional cuisine, Azerbaijan has something to offer everyone. Surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains and Caspian Sea, the country offers an experience unlike anywhere else. It is an off-the-beaten-path destination, which has become a growing interest to tourists. You will not regret adding this destination to your travel list.

DID YOU KNOW?

The current population stands at more than 10 million over an area of 86,600 square kilometres (sqkm).

OT: Why, in your opinion, should someone visit the capital city of Baku – what defines it?

FS: Baku uniquely blends ancient charm with a modern atmosphere. It’s where history meets contemporary, offering every traveller many entertaining, gastronomic, and cultural experiences. Visitors can stroll through the UNESCO-protected Walled City of Baku and experience its historic treasures, while indulging in the Seaside Boulevard’s modern attractions or admiring the futuristic architecture and the majestic Baku Eye. The city boasts historical sites, art galleries, authentic restaurants, and beach clubs, offering a captivating experience combining its rich

cultural heritage with state-of-the-art amenities.

Baku appeals to a wide array of travellers. History enthusiasts are drawn to its UNESCO World Heritage Sites and ancient marvels like the Shirvanshah’s Palace and Maiden Tower, whilst art and architecture lovers are captivated by its modern buildings. Families can delight in attractions like the Kinderland entertainment centre and scenic boat rides in Little Venice. Nature lovers can escape to the sandy beaches of the Caspian Sea or the mesmerising mud volcanoes. Gourmands can savour the delectable Azerbaijani cuisine, while wine aficionados can explore the city’s burgeoning wine

industry. Adventure seekers can indulge in water sports or hike in national parks, while luxury seekers can unwind in 5-star spas and hammams.

In essence, Baku welcomes everyone, from solo travellers and history buffs to families and luxury seekers.

OT: What is your branding strategy for Baku, how do you market and promote the city?

FS: Our strategy emphasises Azerbaijan’s rich tapestry of culture, history, and modernity. We focus on amalgamating the city’s historical legacy with its modern-day allure. Azerbaijan places significant

AZERBAIJAN TRAVEL GUIDE Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 117

emphasis on tourism development.

Through a multifaceted approach, we aim to elevate tourism-generated revenue and spotlight Baku’s potential as a compelling tourist destination.

The cosmopolitan capital of Baku boasts a tapestry of city experiences, from museums and galleries to chic bars with local wines and delicacies to an array of restaurants with traditional and international cuisines, as well as countless meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) offerings. With its wellequipped resources and world-class infrastructure, Azerbaijan can host events of all scales. It features the 5-star Baku International Airport, a plethora of chain hotels, versatile venues, and facilities like the Baku Congress Centre and the Heydar Aliyev Centre, which includes museums, exhibition complexes, and

multimedia conference rooms for international events.

We have reactivated collaborations with international hotel chains, including recent openings of The Ritz-Carlton, Winter Park Baku, and Mercure Baku. Such partnerships emphasise luxury, comfort, and global standards. We also aim to showcase the country’s intangible treasures. Baku’s rich culinary heritage, especially the winemaking tradition, is another aspect we highlight. Visitors can indulge in wine tastings at local bars and explore the unique grape varieties we possess.

Our promotional activities include showcasing both the historical hotspots and the modern architectural wonders of Baku. We also emphasise the city’s safety, family-friendly attractions, and wellness facilities, including the

traditional hammam culture and the vast culinary landscape. By interweaving these elements, we position Baku as a destination to visit and an experience to cherish.

OT: What is the sustainable tourism approach for Azerbaijan, and what eco-friendly travel experiences does the country offer?

FS: We’re deeply committed to fostering sustainable and eco-friendly travel experiences, showcasing Azerbaijan’s distinct and rich heritage. Our initiatives are broad and diverse, aiming to offer immersive and authentic experiences.

In line with our commitment, we have crafted and implemented an action plan for advancing sustainable tourism in Azerbaijan. We aim to enhance the regulatory framework by introducing sustainability standards

to the industry and acknowledging sustainable practitioners through certification. Taking a proactive approach, we are currently embarking on a comprehensive destination audit, beginning with the northern region of Azerbaijan. This initiative allows us to scrutinise the current situation and devise a meticulous action plan, ultimately working towards establishing a sustainable ecosystem in the area.

We actively involve local communities in creating and implementing tourism experiences,

providing economic benefits and opportunities for residents. Supporting locals and meeting their needs will sustainably generate a baseline for the value of tourism. Since locals create the destination and make it attractive to the whole world, “local” will dominate our continued tourism strategy.

This is why we started the Slow Food Travel programme in 2021, to honour and preserve the age-old methods and products that are in danger of extinction and connect local producers with hotel and restaurant

chains. Additionally, we are enhancing our focus on outdoor and adventure activities, with a keen interest in developing winter tourism.

For instance, the Shahdag Mountain Resort has recently expanded its facilities and infrastructure to welcome more winter enthusiasts. Moreover, together with industry partners, we have developed joint initiatives over the years. Join us on well-developed hiking routes and explore birdwatching nationwide.

Birdwatching in Azerbaijan is a rewarding experience with over 400 bird species, including endemic ones like the Caucasian snowcock, making it an exciting destination. Nature reserves like Gizil Aghaj National Park, Shirvan National Park, and many more are hotspots for bird lovers.

Hiking routes passing through Khinalig village will take you to witness the newly UNESCO-inscribed cultural landscape of Khinalig and the ‘Köç Yolu’ transhumance route. The village is located in the Caucasus Mountains on a steep mountain peak nearly 2,200 metres from sea level. Having historically practised transhumance, every year when

Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 119

the season changes, thousands of Khinalig families still roam between the mountainous lowlands along the so-called ‘Köç Yolu’ seasonal migration route.

Central to our strategy is the development of sustainable and responsible tourism. We’re actively working on creating new hiking trails in the south and north of Azerbaijan, which are set to open to the public in 2024 in addition to the existing ones. We are also introducing a range of eco-friendly activities, from butterfly watching and olive tree route developments to new camping zones. Cultural and infrastructural renovations are underway in various regions, including Khinalig, Nakhchivan, and Sheki. A German heritage route in Azerbaijan is in the final stages of development, promising immersive cultural experiences.

Our commitment to sustainability is further echoed in our partnership with the World Travel & Tourism Council’s ‘Hotel Sustainability Basics’ initiative, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of our hospitality sector and involve as many hotels as possible in this transformative journey.

We have also initiated the Rural Guesthouse Programme to cultivate a network of sustainable rural accommodations, set to provide valuable resources and enrich the local tourism sector, emphasising our dedicated efforts to reshape Azerbaijan’s global image from solely an oil-rich destination to one that conscientiously preserves and showcases its invaluable resources and traditions.

In essence, our varied initiatives, from sustainable food experiences to innovative tourism projects and responsible accommodation

practices, all represent Baku’s holistic approach to offering rich, sustainable, and eco-friendly travel experiences, inviting the world to ‘take another look’ and discover Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable and responsible development.

OT: What are the main trends transforming tourism in Azerbaijan?

FS: The tourism landscape of Baku is witnessing several transformative trends. Firstly, blending ancient history with modern attractions gives travellers a multi-dimensional

experience. From the UNESCOprotected sites in the Old Town to contemporary marvels like Flame Towers, Baku offers a diverse palette of experiences.

Secondly, luxury tourism is on the rise, fuelled by the entry of international hotel chains and malls with luxury brands, such as the Port Baku Mall. These establishments emphasise top-notch luxury, comfort, and world-class service, catering to the high-end traveller segment.

Thirdly, there’s a renewed interest in intangible cultural experiences. Tourists are eager to delve into Azerbaijan’s revered UNESCO-listed ‘tea tradition’ and our rich culinary heritage, which can be enjoyed in many local restaurants. The emerging trend of experiential travel is leading to more immersive experiences like wine tastings and exploring the unique grape varieties of Azerbaijan.

Lastly, family and wellness tourism is gaining traction. With many attractions on offer, families and wellness seekers find unique experiences tailored to their interests.

In essence, the main trends are a synthesis of luxury, cultural

immersion, family-centric activities, and wellness experiences, making Azerbaijan an all-encompassing and versatile destination.

OT: Are there any sights, activities, or hidden gems you would recommend?

FS: Azerbaijan offers incredible diversity, with nine of the world’s 11 climate zones. From lush subtropical regions with lemon trees and tea plantations to majestic mountains, forests, and coastal beauty, we have

a unique experience waiting for you, whatever the season.

While the southern regions boast a pleasant mild climate, just a short drive from Baku, you can experience the beauty of our northern ski resorts. The journey from Baku to the north unveils picturesque landscapes, from the world’s lowest national capital to our highest peak. Along the way, you can explore the historic Chirag Gala fortress, meet the unique ethnic group in Khinalig village, or enjoy an array of winter activities at our

mountain ski resorts.

The rising popularity of our winter resorts is undeniable. As we anticipate increased visitor numbers in the coming year, we’re eager for more tourists to experience Azerbaijan’s winter splendour. The range of icy colours and luxury resorts with all the necessary equipment is perfect for a ski getaway in the Shahdag and Tufandag Mountain Resorts.

The resorts are constructed in such a way that everything you are looking for is located in one place: scenic views with first-class hotels, apartments, spas, lots of restaurants to dine in, as well as various thrilling sports and leisure activities. An Austrian engineering and consultancy firm planned and supported the construction of the Shahdag Tourism Complex, the first project of its kind in Azerbaijan. Not many people know, but right here at the Shahdag Mountain Resort, you’ll find the only mountain coaster in the Caucasus.

It’s an exhilarating adventure for both the young and the young at heart. The infrastructure work has been executed to extend the skiing slopes, leading to an overall length of 30 kilometres (km).

At both resorts, everyone from beginners to professional skiers can relish vast pistes. Non-skiers can also have fun choosing from activities such as off-road tours, paragliding, cycling, trottinette, and cable car rides overlooking the majestic mountains.

OT: Can you tell us about Azerbaijan’s gastronomical experiences?

FS: Azerbaijani culinary delights promise to tantalise your taste buds. From flavourful fruity sauces to succulent mutton-based meat dishes and a variety of aromatic plovs, Azerbaijan’s rich cuisine is a journey in itself. Its variety of high-end Western-style restaurants converted old medieval caravanserais, and rustic eateries situated in the lush forests of

the Caucasus Mountains’ foothills offer a vast range of dining experiences. In Baku, traditional bistros serve classic local dishes to accompany soulful local folk music. At the same time, regional recipes in other corners of the country are infused with the aromas of the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains, and Azerbaijan’s astonishing nine climate zones.

Explore Azerbaijan’s rich winemaking tradition and taste local grape varieties like Madrasa, Bayan Shira, Shirvanshahi, and Khindogni. In the Soviet times, most of the vineyards in Azerbaijan were destroyed, but in the past year, locals have revived the industry. Azerbaijan’s commitment to viticulture and wine tourism has earned recognition from the Council of Europe and the European Institute of Cultural Routes.

As you embark on the journey to the vineyards, enhance your experience with more delights. Explore Sheki’s captivating Wine Museum, savour wine tastings at the Chabiant winery in Ismayilli, consider an overnight stay at the Chateau Monolit Guest House, and don’t miss out on a trip to the nearby craft village of Lahij. In the sunkissed terroir south of Gabala, indulge in Savalan’s unique wines and the luxurious Chenot Palace Gabala.

Explore the Meysari winery in Shamakhi, known for crafting sophisticated organic dry reds and whites, and Sharg Ulduzu near Shamkir, boasting renewed vines and delightful tastings. Meanwhile, the Goygol winery, an historic icon dating back to the late 19th century, plays a pivotal role in Azerbaijan’s winemaking heritage.

If you can’t make it to the vineyards in the regions, you can visit Baku’s excellent wine bars to try local wines along with Azerbaijani culinary delights.

OT: What makes Azerbaijan a health and wellness destination?

FS: While in Azerbaijan, one should

enhance their trip with a refreshing wellness experience. Travellers can restore their minds and souls at renowned wellness resorts nationwide. In addition to thermal baths and springs, you can also try the famous oil baths in Naftalan, known for their ability to heal more than 70 diseases.

Azerbaijan is also home to more than 30 deposits of thermal mineral waters with different concentrations, sulphur levels, and organic substances in the Caucasus Mountains. Three of these are located near the charming city of Gabala and are the essentials of balneotherapy treatments at several world-class health and wellness resorts.

To indulge in the wonders of these thermal waters, one should visit the luxurious Lankaran Springs Wellness Resort, with its modern amenities and promise of a tranquil and serene experience.

OT: Finally, what are the Azerbaijan Tourism Board’s current goals?

FS: In our dedicated journey at the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, our

central goals revolve around making Azerbaijan a leading destination, emphasising accessibility, sustainability, and quality in tourism.

We aim to present a harmonious blend of our rich Caucasian culture, breathtaking natural beauty, and diverse gastronomy to captivate local and international tourists.

In Focus

A city enchanted with the ambience of ancient times and the magic of the modern atmosphere, there is more than one way to spend your vacation here.

ENJOY THE ATMOSPHERE strolling along the seaside boulevard or a gondola ride in Little Venice, visit the Carpet Museum, constructed like a rolled carpet and designed by Austrian architects Franz Janz, and taste the best dishes from local cuisine. You can also indulge in a shopping spree at two of the largest malls of the Caucasus region – Deniz Mall and Yashil Bazaar – a magnificent manifestation of the Silk Road.

Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage boasts a range of UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Walled City of Baku with Shirvanshah’s Palace and Maiden Tower, Gobustan State Reserve, the historic centre of Sheki with the Khan’s Palace, with the cultural landscape of the Khinalig People, and Hyrcanian Forests newly inscribed on the list. Beyond these tangible landmarks lie intangible treasures, such as the revered tea tradition and the crafts of Sheki, Lahij, and the renovated Basgal village. Surrounded by beautiful nature, Basgal village is filled with restored hammams,

mosques, and artisans of kelaghayi – a traditional silk headscarf for women, crafted from natural local resources with a unique batik technique.

Experience the nomadic spirit by hiking to another newly designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khinalig village. Perched at 2,200 meters in the Caucasus Mountains, it’s one of Azerbaijan’s highest villages. Celebrating its rich cultural heritage, locals preserve their traditions and a language spoken nowhere else, embracing a truly authentic semi-nomadic lifestyle. As part of the Khinalig Historical, Architectural, and Ethnographical Reserve, enjoy breathtaking mountain views and an immersive cultural journey. The Köç Yolu trail, connecting highland summer pastures with winter lowlands, reveals the village’s age-old practice of seasonal livestock movement for an extraordinary experience. It would be best to take your travel up a notch by extending your trip to the epic landscapes in other parts of the country, too.

Caucasus Mountains

Northern Azerbaijan is decorated by the Caucasus Mountains, which offer unique hiking opportunities. Nature’s immeasurable generosity and beauty provide an attractive future for nature-based tourism, which is actively developing. Notably, the KhinaligGalakhudat and Galakhudat-Griz trails near Guba stand out for their unrivalled beauty. As over 50 percent of Azerbaijan is mountainous, many of its villages and most monumental landscapes are accessed by hiking.

Palace of the Shirvanshahs

Described by UNESCO as “one of the pearls of Azerbaijan architecture”, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs is located in the inner city of Baku. Together with the Maiden Tower, the monument is built over earlier structures. Within the palace complex is the Divankhana, a reception hall that some researchers believe contains the Tomb of Shah, the remains of Key-Kubad Mosque, Murad’s Gate, and the Palace bathhouse, to name a few.

Mud Volcanoes

Azerbaijan has the greatest concentration of mud volcanoes of any country, with 700 of the 1,700 that are situated around the world and only 350 are active. Underground and submarine volcanoes are also famed in Azerbaijan, as there are more than 140 of them in the Caspian Sea. The landscape around Baku is messy and bubbling, and Dashgil, around a 90 minute drive from Baku, is a popular site to visit to see the natural, unearthly phenomenon in action.

Getting There and Around

BEFORE YOU BOOK tickets, a visa is required to enter Azerbaijan. Visit the Republic of Azerbaijan’s website for an electronic visa available through the ASAN Visa system.

Served by many international airports, Azerbaijan Airlines operates regular flights from Berlin, Milan,

Vienna, Barcelona, London, Istanbul and Beijing. The airline also flies several times a Nakhchivan. The Airport Express Bus runs every 30 minutes to Baku’s central transport hub.

Once there, buses and trains are a convenient way to travel

around the country. The buses are a modern, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive way of getting about, taxis are widely available, and Baku’s metro connects the city centre, suburbs, and rural areas. International and local car hire companies are also based in downtown Baku.

French Polynesia

Follow in the footsteps of centuries worth of adventurers, artists, and those looking for serenity, and discover what French Polynesia has to offer

WRITER: LAUREN KANIA | PROJECT MANAGER: DEANE ANDERTON

FRENCH POLYNESIA TRAVEL GUIDE 130 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Sculpted by the moss-green peaks of dormant volcanoes that drop dramatically to vividly turquoise lagoons, infiltrated with such colourful species you’ll feel you’ve been transported to another universe, French Polynesia is a place of pure tropical fantasy.

French Polynesia consists of five archipelagos in the South-Central Pacific Ocean with over 118 scattered islands throughout. The energetic capital, Papeete, is located on the largest and most popular island, Tahiti, which will immediately thrust you into the pounding heart of Polynesian life and culture - a culture that was the birthplace of the overwater bungalow, surfing, tattoos, and even the modern-day food truck.

The sultry and intimate islands are protected from the force of the sea by barrier reefs that encircle the land almost completely, allowing for all sorts of wildlife and ecosystems to thrive in this uniquely diverse landscape that has inspired movies, artists, actors, and all those seeking a lethargically romantic experience.

Take it slow and lounge in a hammock overlooking brilliant white coral sand beaches, go on an adventure and hike or even horseback ride through lushly vegetated mountaintops, or strap on your goggles

and fins to spend an afternoon snorkelling through the lagoons and swim alongside the nation’s official animal: the sea turtle.

Polynesian culture has existed and flourished for centuries, culminating in a radiant history that invokes the traditions of the environment and the people within. Everything from brightly dressed Tahitian dancers to delectable cuisines that blend authentic Polynesian heritage with a French twist, French Polynesia offers an experience that would make anyone fall unapologetically in love with the islands.

Because of the unparalleled beauty that the islands and atolls have to offer, ensuring sustainable and ethical tourism is an incredibly important factor for those who call the islands home. Many of the hotels and tourism services dissipated throughout French Polynesia place an emphasis on ecotourism and the ways in which they can guarantee that their everyday practices all contribute to the well-being and conservation of the ecosystem.

This globally renowned destination is considered a slice of heaven on Earth. With the scent of vanilla bean lofting in the air, there are endless arrays of adventure awaiting those looking to step directly into the watercolour sunsets of French Polynesia.

Eat:

FOR DINING WITH A VIEW...

Set on a hill approximately 2,000 feet above the capital of Papeete, O Belvédère is the place both locals and tourists alike go for great food and stunning scenery.

With thrilling views of the sea and the island of Moorea, this restaurant and bar has the feel of a treehouse, seeing as the outdoor terrace is built around a tree trunk, with a swimming pool on the hill below and occasional live music to add to the ethereal appeal.

Discover mountain cuisine, Savoyard specialities, and a friendly atmosphere while overlooking the turquoise lagoon of Tahiti.

FOR THE ORIGINAL FOOD TRUCK EXPERIENCE…

The island of Tahiti has inspired a plethora of popular ideas in modern culture, one of which is the food truck.

Dozens of years before food trucks became popular, Tahiti had roulottes, trucks that serve everything from traditional island cuisine to pizzas and Chinese food. These trucks aren’t just a trend here but a staple of everyday life, known for the fresh ingredients, large portions, and low prices.

Found all around the island, these colourful trucks mostly congregate at Vaiete Square in Papeete and are absolutely worth multiple visits to get the opportunity to experience a litany of incredible dishes.

Do:

FOR AN UNDERWATER ADVENTURE…

Reserve a trip with Bora Bora: Eco Shark and Snorkelling Safari for a two-and-a-half-hour journey where you can explore the vibrant underwater life the island has to offer.

Specifically, these waters are known for the stunning, yet shy, black-tip reef sharks who mill around the reefs like protective watchdogs, and families of sting rays who blanket the sandy floor and are unafraid to glide right beneath your feet.

With extensive barrier reefs, nearly 700 species of tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and more, this experience allows you to marvel at an underwater world unique to any other.

FOR A SCENIC VIEWPOINT...

Whether it’s via an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or hiking, visiting the top of Belvedere Lookout is a must when traversing the island of Moorea.

If you are feeling up for an adventurous nature trek that takes you through waterfalls and up winding trails, or alternatively if you’re more about the destination rather than the journey and would rather take a car, you will be rewarded with views of Cook’s Bay, Opunohu Bay, Mt. Rotui, and the fertile Opunohu Valley with its many pineapple plants, craggy peaks, and gentle slopes. This magical mountain is the perfect place for a bird’seye view of the island.

Sleep: FOR LUXURY AND ENVIRONMENTALISM…

In Tetiaroa, a quiet atoll, a renowned resort thrives in harmony with nature.

The Brando, named after the late Marlon Brando and inspired by his vision to preserve sanctuaries and raise awareness of the environment, is a non-profit and luxury resort that is singularly focused on one mission: zero carbon.

132 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Recognised as a leader at the forefront of sustainable luxury travel and renewable resource innovation, The Brando has been carefully planned to tread lightly, with 35 private villas that rest on stilts and are gently nestled among the existing landscape, mindfully built into, not on top of, the fragile ecosystem.

FOR MODERN POLYNESIAN STYLE...

The Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea offers 91 units scattered throughout the garden, beach, and water. Most notable are the bungalows that are said to be built on a mythical location, such as the first hotel of the “Bali Hai Boys” who invented the water bungalow.

Decorated in the most authentic Polynesian style, the hotel offers a wide range of accommodations, a world-class restaurant, a spa, and plenty of exciting activities.

In addition to ensuring a memorable and relaxed trip, Manava Beach Resort has been working with the non-profit organisation, To’A Nui, to preserve the coral reef close to the hotel, thus being awarded the Silver Label by EarthCheck and the local ‘Bronze Turtle’ prize.

Moorea Island In Focus

Rising out of the sea like that of an ancient edifice with green spires so high they pierce the clouds, Moorea, an island next to Tahiti, will renew your belief in the magic of nature.

THE ISLAND OF Moorea has been a source of inspiration for an array of artists over the decades, with painters, carvers, jewellers, and tattoo artists taking their time to try and capture the island’s unparalleled tranquillity and find the inspiration that the incomparable landscape offers.

With peaceful meadows, stunningly blue lagoons, pastel-painted homes, and gardens of tropical flowers, Moorea is known as one of the most memorable locations in French Polynesia, with a unique beauty you won’t forget anytime soon.

Because of the quiet lagoon waters and the annual trade winds, there are many different activities that visitors can partake in, from kiteboarding and water skiing to hiking and horseback riding. However, many consider this island a

haven for scuba diving and snorkelling, as the varied coral reef ecosystem boasts striking marine life and waters that encompass every shade of blue.

On the mountainside, there are eight summits that feature a once-active volcanic crater that has now grown into an emerald-green valley, perfect for exploring and reconnecting with the simple pleasures of life. A joy for all the senses, you’ll relish the enchanted moment of strolling between gardens and white sand beaches, flower and pineapple plantations, and listening to the sounds of the ukulele being carried along the breeze.

La vie heureuse, as they say in Tahiti, meaning the happy life, is a mindset that Moorea exudes for all those who visit this geographical marvel.

Iipona

After being extensively restored in the early 1990s, Iipona, some 1,500 metres from the centre of Puamau, has become known for being one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in French Polynesia. Boasting five of the largest tikis in the archipelagos, this religious sanctuary perpetuates an eerie and mythical feel that is sure to transport you back in time.

Coral Garden

Located in one of the largest lagoons of Polynesia, the Coral Garden is the most renowned snorkelling spot in Tahaa, with crystal waters that allow you to drift idyllically over colourful coral, schools of butterfly fish, giant sunbathing clams, and more. Take the afternoon to lather on some sunscreen and admire the unique natural beauty of this lagoon.

Papeete Market

As one of the oldest surviving institutions on the island of Tahiti, this indoor market is the best place to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of authentic Polynesian life. Known as the commercial and social hub of the capital, you can find everything from fruits and vegetables to locally made textiles, oils, and handcrafted jewellery.

Getting There and Around

AS FRENCH POLYNESIA is a collection of approximately 118 remote islands located in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean, halfway between California and Australia, travelling there takes a bit of effort.

However, the reward is well worth the extensive travel, as the idyllic lagoons, colourful reefs, and sprawling mountains draw visitors from all over the world.

The majority of travellers arrive by air, with the only international airport, Tahiti-Faa’a, residing on the main island of Tahiti, about five kilometres

west of the capital, Papeete. From here, you can easily hop on flights with airlines like Air Tahiti or Air Moana to go to nearby islands and atolls to explore the various regions.

Another popular option that ensures you can visit multiple islands and experience French Polynesian culture is booking an island-hopping cruise that begins in Papeete and takes you through the captivating isles via crystal blue waterways. This may allow for less independence, but you’ll be able to take comfort in all-inclusive amenities and a well-organised itinerary.

Once ashore the main island of Tahiti, public transportation is widely available, with a bus system, taxis, and ferries that run consistently throughout the day. On the outer islands, public transport is less common, and it is

highly recommended to use rental cars or motorcycles, or even your own two feet if you are up for a scenic adventure.

French Polynesia is a mythical destination with islands like Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and the untouched Marquesas Islands that cannot be missed. There is no wrong time of year to go, as the islands bask in nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Turks and Caicos Islands

The low-lying archipelago of the Turks and Caicos Islands is lapped by the rhythm of the azure waters and invites visitors for an unparalleled experience in an untouched utopia

WRITER: RACHEL CARR |

PROJECT MANAGER: KRISHA CANLAS

138 | Outlook Travel Issue 15

Boasting beaches so beautiful they look photoshopped, the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) is a luxurious destination with seas of a hue so blue that the idyllic archipelago is both ideal and dreamlike.

The Turks Island Passage separates the two entities of the smaller Turks and the larger Caicos, with the private bolt holes of Parrot, Ambergris, and Pine Cay nestled amongst the islands of North, Middle, and South Caicos, Providenciales, Salt Cay, and Grand Turk. These are the only inhabited places out of the 40 in the tropical Bahamas island chain. As the third-largest British Overseas Territory, the Lucayan Archipelago is in the Atlantic Ocean and northern West Indies.

Home to one of the world’s largest and healthiest coral reefs, TCI has many popular dive spots where visitors can come eye-to-eye with turtles and other marine life, such as lionfish, rays, parrotfish, balloonfish, and trunkfish. The tropical ocean spectacle is a must

to experience and explore. Friendly-finned inhabitants include dolphins, barracudas, and mellow species of sharks. The graceful underwater display of mangroveloving lemon sharks can be witnessed when venturing on a diving excursion, as sharks are rarely seen in the calm and pristine waters of popular beaches.

Moreover, TCI’s culture goes beyond its crystalline waters; its history begins with the Taino and Lucayan Indians, who left a rich seafaring heritage, salt raking, and farming. For almost 700 years, they were the sole inhabitants, settling mainly in Middle Caicos and Grand Turk – home to Cockburn Town, which is the capital city of TCI. Today, the islands stand on the threshold of becoming the fastest-growing economy in the Caribbean. Luckily, it has strictly controlled development to protect TCI as a pristine sanctuary for residents and tourists to enjoy for thousands of years to come.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The flag of TCI once featured an igloo! A mapmaker in England confused salt mounds with an ice structure, so he added little doors, and the design was used for around 100 years!

• A 1941 Hollywood movie titled Bahama Passage was filmed almost entirely on Salt Cay. It starred Madeleine Carroll (39 Steps) and Stirling Hayden (Dr Strangelove and The Godfather).

• TCI’s ambassador is JoJo, a bottlenose dolphin who has visited the waters of TCI for over 30 years.

• There are no lakes or rivers in TCI. Freshwater depends entirely on rainfall or expensive desalinated water.

• The most common currency on the islands is the US dollar.

• English is the official language of TCI, but you might hear some Spanish and Haitian Creole since most immigrants are from the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

EXPERIENCE TURKS AND CAICOS

Racquel Brown, Change Manager and Interim CEO of Experience Turks and Caicos, speaks about marketing the country as a multi-island destination with a plethora of possibilities while maintaining a sustainable approach to tourism

Outlook Travel (OT): Can you talk us through the origins of Experience Turks and Caicos and its initial vision and mission?

Racquel Brown (RB), Change Manager and Interim CEO: Following the dissolution of the Tourist Board in July 2023, two entities were formed: Experience Turks and Caicos and the Department of Tourism Regulations (DTR). While the DTR is entrusted with

regulating the industry and ensuring all tourism stakeholders function to a particular set of standards across the board, Experience Turks and Caicos’ mandate is to promote and market TCI. As the destination marketing organisation, our mission centres around three pillars: inclusive growth, sustainability, and competitiveness. Through inclusive growth, we aim to ensure all communities in TCI benefit

from tourism, which comprises 80 percent of our GDP. Core to this mission is the marketing of TCI as a multi-island destination, encouraging guests to visit and discover the beauty, history, and culture of our main islands beyond Providenciales – Grand Turk, North, Middle, and South Caicos, and Salt Cay – plus our exceptional private island resorts of Parrot Cay, Ambergris Cay, and Pine Cay.

TURKS AND CAICOS

As a luxury destination, ensuring our guests enjoy a quality experience is key. Therefore, sustainability is essential. The natural beauty of TCI – our breathtaking beaches, our underwater attractions such as the third largest barrier reef in the world, which captivates divers from all over the world, our limestone caves in North Caicos, and our natural parks teeming with flora, fauna, and marine life - must all be protected for the benefit of our residents and visitors.

We work hard to enforce several sustainability measures to ensure that these pristine natural environments – both on land and underwater – are preserved for future generations. In October, we commissioned a carrying capacity study, and we are the only Caribbean island to implement this. The study examines current

pressures in the tourism industry and will act as a benchmark in reviewing the implications of growing tourism numbers while setting, monitoring, and maintaining industry standards. A carrying capacity model for TCI will be designed in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and all its indicators. The third pillar, competitiveness, speaks to the processes that will be implemented to guarantee the ongoing improvement of the quality of all the tourist services and attractions offered by tourism stakeholders in TCI.

OT: Why should someone visit TCI, and what type of travellers do the islands appeal to the most?

RB: We are a luxury destination and home to Grace Bay Beach, consistently ranked as one of the best

beaches in the world. As such, we attract a demographic with discerning tastes, those looking for seclusion and privacy, unparalleled experiences, and stunning accommodations with the best amenities you can think of. Visiting TCI should be at the top of every travel list because we are the destination that helps you to unplug from the daily rigours of life, relax, dream, and enjoy life the way it’s meant to be. In TCI, you can soak in our gorgeous beaches, tantalise your taste buds at one of our many restaurants, and explore our culture and heritage in our sister islands and at events such as our weekly Fish Fry. As a multi-island destination, you can diversify your experiences with day trips and overnight stays to Grand Turk and North, Middle, and South Caicos.

146 | Outlook Travel Issue 15
Outlook Travel Issue 15 | 147 TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS TRAVEL GUIDE

Beyond the stunning destination and accommodations, what makes for an unforgettable visitor experience is our emphasis on warm and authentic hospitality. We truly value our visitors and go above and beyond to ensure they have an unforgettable experience, regardless of where they are staying. This human connection is what continues to bring visitors back year after year.

OT: Which destinations within the islands would you recommend, and what is the target audience?

RB: For day trips and overnight stays we recommend:

Grand Turk: The capital of TCI and our cruise capital is an island where

history comes alive. Here, you can stroll through the picture-perfect Cockburn Town, one of the oldest areas in the country, and learn about the history of the islands through the many historic buildings that have been preserved and restored. Grand Turk also has magnificent beaches and amazing marine activities, such as diving along the 7,000 foot (ft) wall, part of the third largest barrier reef in the world. The Grand Turk Cruise Center also lives on the island’s southern end and serves as the base for cruise ship visitors, with gift shops, restaurants, and other tourist attractions here.

Salt Cay: The smallest of the inhabited islands, Salt Cay was once

the hub of the salt industry and offers a walk-through history, stunning beaches, whale watching, scuba diving, snorkelling, and fishing.

South Caicos: Perfect for those who love marine activities, South Caicos is a quiet island that attracts bone fishers, divers, and those who enjoy paddle boating, kite sailing, kayaking, and boat tours.

North and Middle Caicos: Our verdant twin islands, North and Middle Caicos, offer picturesque, secluded beaches such as Mudjin Harbour and Bambarra, beaches, stunning caves such as the Conch Bar and Indian Caves, plantation ruins, and birdwatching. These islands are

148 | Outlook Travel Issue 15 TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS TRAVEL GUIDE

great for a day trip for those looking to explore.

OT: Are there any new tourism initiatives or projects in the pipeline that you would like to highlight?

RB: Our current focus is on developing our tourism product on the sister islands to increase visitation and spending. We recently complemented our team with a local representative who will be focusing on developing the product in North, Middle, and East Caicos

OT: What are the current challenges facing the tourism sector?

RB: Of course, being an island in the Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane season, which runs from 1st June

to 30th November, is our biggest challenge. Thankfully, we have proven our resilience in bouncing back from extreme weather situations in the past.

OT: How do you propose to promote the islands, especially when it isn’t peak season? Are there any changes to the marketing strategy you would like to implement?

RB: We are continuing to seek new airlift into TCI to encourage ease of access. In November, we welcomed a twice-weekly, non-stop Virgin Atlantic flight that will open up the UK and European markets for us and encourage more visitation throughout the year. There have been talks to begin airlift into Grand Turk, which would be a gamechanger for that

island and further enhance our thrust to increase visitation.

OT: What are Experience Turks and Caicos’ key priorities and goals for the future?

RB: Our key priorities and goals are to develop our tourism products in keeping with our pillar of inclusive growth. Ensuring all communities and stakeholders benefit from tourism is key. We are also enhancing our collaboration with stakeholders to ensure our guests receive a quality experience and that we continue to preserve the environment around which our tourism product is centred.

Turks and Caicos is renowned for its enviable climate. Temperatures range between 80 and 90 degrees (F) from June to October, whilst temperatures average 80 to 84 degrees between November and May. Clear waters remain temperate and clear year-round. An average year can see Turks and Caicos experiencing 350 days of sunshine, making it the ideal location for your romantic getaway or family vacation this summer.

A wealth of Caribbean fun activities can be found in Turks and Caicos. From snorkelling and scuba diving to deep-sea fishing, parasailing, and water skiing, the islands provide a perfect playground for water lovers. Additionally, historical sites such as Cheshire Hall and the Richmond Hill Plantation offer an insight into the island’s past, whilst activities including sightseeing, shopping, and dining will keep a range of guests thoroughly entertained.

For a vacation of unrivalled luxury and privacy, unforgettable sunsets, spectacular views and sunshine, SulMare is a one-stop shop for all your needs.

SALT CAY In Focus

WITH ITS NAME derived from a long history of sea salt production, in the southeast of TCI lies Salt Cay – a small, inhabited island with a total landmass of 2.6 square miles. Despite its size, Salt Cay has many activities, experiences, and possibilities, but passenger ferries between the island and Providenciales are unfeasible due to its distance. Instead, there are several scheduled flights a week.

The primary settlement on the island is Balfour Town, where the main port of Deane’s Dock is located. The population peaked at around 700 people in the 1700s and 1800s. This number has generally declined since, and today, it is an example of an island that time forgot.

Around 100 residents remain, and donkeys, previously used to pull ancestors’ carts, now roam freely all over Salt Cay. There are also no paved roads and very few cars.

One of the island’s icons is the Harriott White House, part of the remaining old colonial architecture in the Balfour Town and Deane’s Dock area. Remnants of the salt salinas and windmill foundations also remain. Salt Cay has been nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which will be the only place of its kind in the whole of TCI. The small island is also an excellent location for diving and whale watching. The scuba diving industry has been a key driver of the Salt Cay economy since the demise of salt production in the 1930s.

FOOD and GASTRONOMY

CONCH IS SO beloved throughout TCI, that the sea snail from the queen conch shell is even found on its national flag. Indeed, Providenciales is home to the world’s only conch farm. In fact, the ingredients here are so fresh that there are no fast food chains on the islands. TCI is one of the few countries that can boast this desirable fact.

Cultural and geographical factors have influenced the everyday cuisine of TCI, and although the conch is omnipresent, either breaded in fritters or served raw in a salad, other seafoods such as grouper and snapper also feature on menus. Agriculturally speaking, modern hydroponics and the availability

of freshwater produce papayas, bananas, herbs, plantains, okra, maize, and other vegetables. The current authentic local cuisine consists of pan-poached fish, peas, and rice, with a side of locally grown mixed greens.

As expected for a small Caribbean nation, seafood has historically played a primary role in its gastronomic delights. However, at times, locals have had to get innovative. Droughtresistant maize was dried, ground into hominy or grits, and used instead of the rice or cereals common today.

Although many desirable culinary experiences are scattered among the islands and cays, the WE Market Café and The Chef’s Table at the Kokomo Botanical Resort offer

food connoisseurs a memorable dining experience. At the WE Market Café, award-winning chefs create gastronomic delights of aged prime AAA steak and fresh market seafood in a zen-like atmosphere blended with the spirit of an open-concept eatery. At the same time, The Chef’s Table has premium ingredients flown in for its world-class, exquisite dishes for the limited-edition dining courses served in an unmatched atmosphere. With small group sizes, each visit is an intimate celebration.

Landmark Attractions

NORTH AND MIDDLE CAICOS

These largely uninhabited Caribbean islands present an all-too-rare opportunity to discover their treasures by vehicle. The back roads are safe and easy to navigate, leading to countless beaches, coasts, and wetland sights. As the largest islands of the group, there are plenty of adventures to be had. A hired jeep will take you through the beautiful unpaved wilderness from the remote beach of Cedar Point to the village of Lorimers on Middle Caicos.

TURKS AND CAICOS NATIONAL MUSEUM

The country’s only museum resides in Cockburn Town on the historic Front Street, and as the only place to find artefacts and learn about the islands’ past and cultural heritage, it is well worth a visit. The primary exhibit is centred on the oldest European shipwreck excavated in the Western Hemisphere – the Molasses Reef Wreck. It also houses important physical evidence of Indigenous people, such as a canoe paddle, pottery, and bone tools.

TURKS HEAD BREWERY

Based in central Providenciales and beginning operations in 2001 as TCI’s first and only brewery, Turks Head Brewery currently produces four varieties of beer and lager: Turk’s Head Lager, Turk’s Head Amber, Island Hopping Ale, and Turk’s Head Lite. The brewery occasionally produces a seasonal selection, including a St. Patrick’s Day stout. Even though it has recently expanded, it is still small yet interesting, with an on-site shop and taproom.

Getting There and Around

MULTIPLE INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES serve

Providenciales International Airport (PLS), with onward connections to Grand Turk and other islands. The main carrier is interCaribbean Airways, and British Airways flies from the UK with a brief stop in Antigua. However, Virgin Atlantic recently began non-stop flights from the UK and Europe twice a week. Otherwise, the remote location can be accessed from major US cities, Canada, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic. Of course, there is also the option of a cruise with a list of leading operators calling at Grand Turk.

Once there, you can travel between the islands via local airlines and ferry services. North Caicos and Middle Caicos are the only two islands connected by a causeway; for accessing the others, there are chartered interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways flights offered by both airlines to the country’s smaller islands. Small passenger ferry services operate between Providenciales and North Caicos, Providenciales and South Caicos, and Grand Turk and Salt Cay.

On the islands themselves, cars are the main means of transport for residents and visitors alike. Note that the country has no train, bus, or subway service. As the distances between most attractions, sights, and beaches

are often far apart, walking and cycling are not comfortably feasible, and taxis make for an expensive journey. Therefore, car hire is the obvious choice. Rental cars may not be needed for guests staying at an all-inclusive resort, and some luxury vacation villas also offer complimentary transport. A short stay in the central Grace Bay area may not warrant vehicle hire either.

The minimum driving age is 25 and 18 for scooters. If your license is in a language other than English, then an International Driving Permit is required.

As an extra special travel treat, booking a place in the Fast Track TCI fast lane is an option. It is a luxury service offering a diplomat experience at PLS, with expedited immigration and customs. Airport transportation is available for arriving and departing guests from the plane to your accommodation and vice versa. Helpful and friendly staff will assist you in booking the required service and ensure you are taken care of on your vacation. Now offering VIP transport via luxury and stylish SUVs, Fast Track TCI prioritises you while you prioritise convenience.

Opulence on the Orient Express

An epic journey on board Europe’s first transcontinental train, travelling through scenic cities and mountainous vistas, served with an abundance of extravagance, the Orient Express offers decadence and delight at the blow of a whistle

Selling the dream of steam, the Orient Express is synonymous with luxury, mystery, and vintage glamour.

As the subject of many films, the two most famous being Murder on the Orient Express, based on the 1934 detective novel by Agatha Christie, and From Russia with Love, the legendary train is embedded in popular culture across the world. It conjures up images of an elegant, bygone epoch of time, inviting you to return to the 1920s with its Art Nouveau and Art Deco interior. Still, its history dates back even further than that.

When the famous, grandiose first-class travel wagon was incepted in 1867 by young Belgian engineer Georges Nagelmackers, the long-distance train heralded an era of extravagance. Passengers sported bowties and tiaras and sipped champagne as the Orient Express embarked on its inaugural trip in 1883 from Paris to Constantinople, as Istanbul was known back then. Much has changed in the world since, but the experience remains the same.

ON A NEW TRACK

Whilst the Direct Orient Express retired in 1977 when it made its last trip between Paris and Istanbul, the original continued to run a regular service from Strasbourg to Vienna until 2009; having been reinstated and reincarnated, it took its maiden voyage to Venice in 1982. The modern-day version of the train transports passengers back to the golden age of travel, still featuring sumptuous upholstery and antique features.

Today, the ‘rolling palace’ is as close to the original as possible, evoking glamour and nostalgia, and the Belmond train has been renamed the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Dinner is a formal event with evening attire.

• No jeans can be worn anywhere at any time.

• Smart daywear is required for lunch.

The train currently runs from London through Paris, Verona, and Venice on the southerly route, and Venice through Verona and Paris to London via Innsbruck, where it joins the Alberg route. Other journeys to European cities are available for example, Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Florence, and Geneva.

Alternately, the Orient Express La Dolce Vita is a tribute to the joie de vivre of the 1960s, dedicated to the spirit of freedom and pleasure. Embarking on a journey through Italy, it embraces Italian design; with deluxe cabins and suites, each carriage is the epitome of luxury.

Gastronomically speaking, the ultimate Italian cuisine and wine await, from the ‘Grand Tour of Italy’ breakfast to afternoon tea, to an appetising aperitivo, and the Le Grand Soir evening dinner. Rendezvous at the Ristorante, where the décor is eclectic with geometric design, soft sage lacquered walls, and sconces that project a deep light.

Itineraries include Rome, Venice, and Portofino on the Italian Riveria, whilst Palermo, Agrigento, and Taormina offer a Sicilian adventure leading to Mount Etna. Alongside these panoramic views and cultural and historical experiences, there are options for five more journeys into Italy for unparalleled adventures.

A PEEK INSIDE THE MAIN TRAIN

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is where luxury and comfort collide. The plush furnishings and theatrical décor facilitate encounters under the vaulted ceiling of the Bar Car, where large windows reflect the passing landscapes. Lamps designed by Lalique punctuate the space, while bon viveurs converse over cocktails over the sound of a resident pianist twinkling the ivories.

The full-board gourmet dining menu invites you to sample the flavours of Europe, chosen to mirror the type of ingredients found along the route. Chef Jean Imbert blends the rich heritage of the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress with his passion for fresh, seasonal produce.

Relax after an adventurous day on the rails in the romantic setting of an historic cabin. The banquette seating will give you a vantage point for watching the scenery go by, and, by night, soft bedding will transform the space into an intimate retreat.

The suites are inspired by the landscape and infused with design from the Art Deco period, and the reimagined accommodation was restored by French expert craftsmen.

If desired, the decadent world of the Grand Suites’ handcrafted living quarters allows for a private dining experience with a 24-hour butler service and free-flowing champagne. Meanwhile, the marbled en-suite bathrooms mean you can refresh in style.

Prices may be eye-popping, but so is the scenery. The train travels through the majestic alpine vistas, with glassy lakes, imposing mountains, and impossibly picturesque villages looming as breakfast is served on its journey south through Switzerland’s Gotthard Pass.

It truly is the ultimate experience for any discerning traveller seeking old-fashioned Hollywood glamour whilst powering through sublime surroundings in an exquisite setting.

BATANTA

LAST STOP.

PART OF THE Raja Ampat, an archipelago of over 1,500 tiny islands situated off the coast of West Papua, Indonesia, Batanta is nothing short of an isolated paradise.

With a population of less than 2,000 local people, and spanning only 450 square kilometres (sqkm), the island is the smallest and most inaccessible of the main Raja Ampat islands, which translates as “four kings” in the local dialect.

Owing to its remote location and relative lack of western development, Batanta boasts pristine, untouched beaches, lush Papuan rainforests, magnificent waterfalls, and technicolour coral reefs teeming with marine life.

There are only a handful of villages on Batanta, and many are located

on a series of deeply convoluted, unreachable bays. Of note is the village of Marandan Weser, or Yennyar, as it is known locally. As one of the few accessible villages on the islands, Marandan Weser uses traditional materials to construct its houses. Inhabited by friendly locals and featuring a private, reef-front accommodation at Marwes homestay, this village is well worth a visit.

Remarkably, the seagrass beds in the protected bay of Batanta’s north coast attract dugongs, a rare species of sea manatee. The pure waters of the bay also enable pearl farming due to an abundance of giant sea clams, whilst a host of other marine life can be spotted just metres from the shore, including manta rays, sea turtles, batfish, and even barracudas.

In fact, according to The Nature Conservancy (NC) and Conservation International (CI), Batanta’s waters are home to around 75 percent of the world’s marine species, making it a considerable snorkelling haven.

Additionally, within the island’s dense foliage, visitors may journey

from Batanta’s sandy shores to magnificent waterfalls in a matter of hours.

Trek through lush mangrove forests whilst on the lookout for some amazing and rare creatures. Batanta is the only place in Raja Ampat where cassowaries can be seen, and scores of other uncommon species can be encountered, including the bluespotted monitor lizard, three types of cuscuses, Wilson’s Bird of Paradise, and an amazing variety of bats.

Ascend the face of steep hills before arriving at the majestic, 10 metre-tall main Batanta waterfall site. You will not only enjoy the fresh, cool waters in a tranquil setting, but also explore hidden caves behind the falls.

Access to Batanta may be limited, with irregular private long boats and ferries from Wasai servicing the island, whilst some backpackers opt to hop onto infrequent cargo boats to keep costs low. However, whether seeking a luxury snorkelling staycation, or a budget-friendly waterfall trekking exploration, Banata Island is not to be missed.
