OBSESSION ISSUE
Letter from the Editor Each year, we produce one of our favorite issues of the year, our annual Obsession Issue. We feature all obsessions from talent to film and television, from gadgets to cars, vacation spots, venues and more. We take pride in giving our readers a close look into all things we obsess over so that our obsessions become contagious. Part of the AHS (American Horror Story) franchise, Hotel gives us one of our long-time obsessions, Mr. Cheyenne Jackson himself. Although he will be among a company of veterans enterting their fifth season, we have no doubt in our minds that he will stand his ground and show the viewers the talented chops only he can perform. Shot in Santa Monica, Calif. by our very own Aleksandar Tomovic and styled by our other very own Warren Alfie Baker, Jackson sets the bar when it comes to the meaning of sustaining a classic look. We also want to introduce you to a new feature we will be including to each issue. Here, in this portion of every Letter From The Editor, we will be listing the corrections from past issues. So in advance, we would like to apologize for any mistakes made and overlooked. Thank you for your understanding. So sit back, relax and enjoy the changes in style and season by enterting our world within these pages. Always, Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director

INTRO One of my most favorite issue themes is back again and coming in strong... Time for our annual OCTOBER OBSESSION issue, and what better way to lead us into the month than to highlight one the newest leads in one of my tv show obsessions, American Horror Story: Hotel. We had the best time shooting the multi-talented, extremely handsome, and even more extremely sweet, Cheyenne Jackson. Shot by our original A-Team, Aleksandar Tomovic (photography/Editor in Chief) and Warren Alfie Baker (styling/Fashion Director) in sunny Santa Monica, CA. Check out the beautiful editorial spread and find out what to expect in this new AHS season. We also have the newest cable obsession, ITV’s Jekyll and Hyde lead, Tom Bateman, shot at the Amba Hotel in London. Also, TNT’s Public Morals lead, Lyndon Smith who gives us major obsession with her fashion/beauty editorial shot in Hollywood, CA by J. Horton. To obsess is to have passion and feel alive! Live in the pages on this month’s Entertainement issue and enjoy! Sincerely, Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director @BELLOmag @lesliealejandro

I can’t get enough of Organ Mood these days. The Montreal-based electronic duo are quickly becoming the next big thing, and judging from how many times I’ve pressed repeat on my iTunes lately, they might soon become the most played artist in my whole library. If you thought Steve Jobs was a driven industrialist, Walt Disney makes him look like an uninspired amateur. I was riveted by PBS’s brand new documentary on the life story of the Disney founder, and now you can watch the entire 2-part American Experience documentary on the life of this fascinating figure by visiting www.PBS.org/WGBH/ AmericanExperience/films/Walt-Disney. I’m a huge neuroscience buff and recently I discovered an incredible video from researchers at Harvard University who scanned an insanely tiny piece of mouse brain tissue smaller than a dust mite (measuring 2% of 1mm). In the fly-through video, we get a glimpse of the thousands of brain cell branches and connections contained within. You can watch it yourself at www.Youtu.be/8YM7-Od9Wr8. In an interesting new study, researchers have discovered the two most fundamental reasons why some people are perfectly happy being single, while others seem to dread it. THANKS FOR THE
NIGHTMARES Remembering Wes Craven (1939 - 2015)
Adrienne McIlvaine (@mizocty) looks back at the blood-soaked but colorful career a horror maestro. I was seven the first time I met Freddy Krueger. A Nightmare on Elm Street had finally wound its way from third-run movie theaters to local NYC independent television station WPIX, and I quickly became fascinated by Freddy Krueger’s twisted wreck of a face that dominated the commercial breaks. Naturally I begged my parents to let me stay up and watch. Big mistake--I barely made it through the opening credits, covering my eyes as Freddy stalked his prey through an industrial hellscape, his clawed glove trailing a shower of sparks. I was so terrified that, afterwards, I slept completely under the covers, convinced that Krueger would chop off any appendage which had the misfortune of escaping the sanctuary of my blankets. When I learned that Wes Craven had died from brain cancer, those terrifying
first moments of seeing Freddy Krueger in all his savage glory came rushing back. Sure, later on I watched Craven’s threadbare but influential films like The Hills Have Eyes, and like every other 90s teen, I obsessively watched Scream until I could quote the entire thing by heart. But Krueger remained my first introduction to the wicked world of Wes Craven, and his passing is an immense loss that won’t soon be replaced.
His films crackle with energy, a brisk holdover from his years spent directing and editing industrial films and hardcore X-rated flicks--even when you’re being scared out your mind, the adrenaline rush is half the fun. They’re also smarter than your typical horror movie, not surprising considering he was a former English and humanities professor with masters degrees in both philosophy and writing. What always intrigued me about his films is how they play fast and loose with the nature of reality and the subconscious, making you question the very nature of identity. From The Serpent and the Rainbow’s voodoo-soaked nightmares to New Nightmare’s clever deconstruction, Craven’s films share an intelligence and wit that elevate even the occasional flop (sorry, Vampire in Brooklyn). His influence on a new generation of horror filmmakers is incalculable. Without the sulky teenage angst that fueled the early Nightmare movies, it’s doubtful anyone would have taken a chance on his slick and sick Scream, which launched screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s career and brought horror into a new post-modern era. Ti West even reflected the rural existential dread of The Last House on the Left in his cult classic debut The House of the Devil, and Drew Goddard cranked New Nightmare’s meta-horror up to 11 in the delightfully scary Cabin in the Woods. In a genre that’s been hijacked by cheap found-footage flicks and gratuitous torture porn, Craven’s legacy of sharply observed, smartly written films that are as thought-provoking as they are terrifying is a gift to film lovers and horror fans everywhere. We’ll miss you, Wes.

TERROR AT 78 RPM Just in time for Halloween, ADRIENNE MCILVAINE (@mizocty) dives into the new cult of horror vinyl soundtracks.
THE BEST HORROR FILMS AREN’T THE ONES WITH THE MOST SCARES OR THE GORIEST MURDERS OR THE MOST PSYCHO KILLERS. The truly great ones are the films that get under your skin, that take time to create an atmosphere and build up suspense until even the slightest noise is enough to send you running for the lights. Films like Halloween and Rosemary’s Baby have become genre icons not just for their terrifying plots involving murderous kids and Satan worshippers, but for their evocative soundtracks that have become recognizable in their own right, full of creeping tension and dramatic thrills that are inextricably linked with the images they bring to life (or death). Which is why the last few years have seen the emergence of record labels dedicated to honoring new and classic horror movie soundtracks with deluxe vinyl reissues and limited editions. With its warm analog tones, idiosyncratic pops and hisses, and highly collectible nature, vinyl is the perfect medium for horror fans to experience the sinister despair of the 2012 remake of grindhouse classic Maniac, or the gentle acoustic sounds of 1980‘s Cannibal Holocaust.
The new vanguard of horror-focused record labels emerged in 2012 with the UK’s Death Waltz Recordings, whose inaugural release was Fabio Frizzi’s synth-driven soundtrack to the 1979 Italian classic Zombi 2 on red splattered vinyl. Key to every Death Waltz release since then, from John Carpenter and Alan Howarth’s epic Prince of Darkness to Jeff Grace’s haunting The House of the Devil, is the thoughtful design and packaging that includes essays, commissioned artwork, and innovative colors for the 180g records themselves. Like Death Waltz, which recently merged with nerd haven Mondo, the New Orleans-based Waxwork Records works with composers and filmmakers to deliver high-quality records from the original masters. Beginning with their 2013 release of Richard Band’s comically over-the-top score to 1985’s Re-Animator, Waxwork has become known for its gallery-quality artwork and boundary-pushing record designs and patterns. Their Instagram (@ waxworkrecords) offers a behind-
the-scenes look at everything from upcoming releases and one-of-a-kind pressings to tributes to the artists and filmmakers that inspire them. If you drew a Venn diagram of horror movie fans and vinyl freaks, you’d end up at Spin the Blackest Circles. Started in May 2013 by the founders of Death Waltz Records and Belgian label One Way Static, the forum features message boards dedicated to Death Waltz, Waxwork, Light in the Attic, and other highly-regarded labels, as well as more general topics like films and local events. But the centerpiece of the site is the marketplace, where users can buy, trade, and sell the latest variants and track down hard-to-find releases. It’s the ultimate union of two obsessive genres that celebrates the best of both.

THIS BROADWAY STAR HAS SPREAD HIS WINGS FROM THEATRE TO THE WORLD OF TV AS HE DEPICTS ROBERT JEKYLL, GRANDSON OF THE LEGENDARY DR. JEKYLL IN JEKYLL AND HYDE. ON TOP OF THAT, HE WAS ALSO CAST AS THE DASHING WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE IN LAST YEAR’S BROADWAY SHOW, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. QUITE THE ACCOLADE! IT’S NO WONDER THIS BRITISH-BORN GEM HAS GARNERED SUCH SUCCESS WITH THE REVELATION OF HUGE SUPPORT FROM HIS CLOSE FAMILY WHO HAVE CHAMPIONED HIM EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.
BELLO mag: Congratulations on your latest role as Robert Jekyll in ITV’s new drama! How did you feel about playing this role in such an iconic tale? Tom Bateman: I was so excited when I read the script, I just thought it was amazing and I wanted to jump on board. Each script I read, it was just getting better and better and I was getting more excited. Then came the daunting moment where I got the role and then thought “Fuck, I’ve got this role and now I have to do it!” I mean, you get to play two characters, you get to play this normal guy and then you get to be this superhero evil monster. BM: Which character do you enjoy more, the more psychotic or. . . TB: [He laughs] I have to say the more psychotic. The psychotic’s the fun one and whenever we’re doing a Hyde shoot, everyone on set gets so excited. Eplosions happen, these massive fights occur and you get these fantastic lines which Charlie Higson has written. So that’s the really fun one, but I think the really interesting thing is actually Jekyll. It is very easy to get seduced by Hyde because he’s the badass but Jekyll is the one who actually has to deal with the consequences and he’s the one who actually has feelings. BM: I see in October you will be on stage for Kenneth Branagh’s ‘The Winter’s Tale’, which he is also starring in. He’s done some incredible work, what was 23
it like acting with him as well as him directing the production? TB: I’ve just come from rehearsals today, he’s an amazing man but I don’t know how many caverns his brain holds. To do a scene with someone who is watching you as a director and an actor, I don’t know how he does it because he’s completely in the moment with you. He gives you everything and he’s listening and then he’ll suddenly snap out of it and become the director. It’s quite odd to do a scene like that. It can sometimes be disheartening knowing they’re directing you. I’m learning so much from him and I remember in my audition Kenneth and I were as close as you and I are now and I kept thinking to myself, “How are you so good? I don’t know what it is about you.” He actually put me off in one of my auditions because I was just absolutely enthralled by him. It’s so amazing to watch him and Judi Dench, they’ve been acting since before I was born and they’re so good, I just sat there taking mental notes. It’s an absolute joy to be in a room with those people, quite intimidating but also exciting. I get to say lines to heroes of mine. BM: So tell me about ‘Shakespeare in Love’?! How did you find playing the dashing protagonist? TB: That was amazing, one of the best experiences of my life! It was also one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, as it was such a big show. I think I lost about a stone in weight, as I was just bouncing from here to there. The cast
was wonderful, working with all these amazing people. A lot of my friends did say, “Who the hell do you think you are playing William Shakespeare?” BM: You seem very close to your family. What was their reaction? Are any of them in the business too? TB: They’re not, they were great though. I remember my mum saying to me when I was about 15 when I told her I wanted to be an actor, she said: “You don’t know how lucky you are to know what you want to do at this age because most people don’t.” I think she was just excited about that and the fact that I knew I wanted to do it. I said to her: “I’d do this for free, I don’t care if I get paid.” It’s just doing it that I love and I think that they saw that and they were very supportive. They never really did the ‘you know it’s hard,’ which probably makes them bad parents! They’re very supportive but at the same time they keep me very grounded, they keep me humble. BM: Your résumé is very impressive and quite classically British. Do you plan to continue on this route or is Hollywood in your sights? TB: I think it would be the characters, it would be the jobs. There are some amazing things in Hollywood and amazing films coming out. Hollywood can give you amazing opportunities but it’s always got to be about the job and the story because otherwise--what are you doing it for? September 2015 - BELLO

WHY ARE
Backstories
THE WAY TO A PERSON’S HEART?
Just ask Sylvester Stallone, Matt Damon, or Ryan Gosling, and they’ll tell you… WRITTEN BY MARK NORRIS IG @mrmarknorris @the_norris_twins Twitter @thenorristwins
TAKE SYLVESTER STALLONE. I USED TO THINK OF HIM AS JUST THE GUY WHO PLAYED ROCKY. I’M NOT EVEN AN AVID ROCKY FAN, ITS A LITTLE BEFORE MY TIME. MAYBE I SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TO WATCH THE MOVIES. Anyway, I came across Sylvester’s history one morning whilst browsing the news profiles of the many Flipboards, Vice’s and Buzzfeeds out there, and just started reading, how he got into the Rocky franchise. It blew me away.
ENTERTAIMENT issue - BELLOmag.com
I’ll admit now that I’m a lover of dogs, which drew me into his story even more. Here’s the gist: Stallone had little money, and back in the day, he wound up at the New York bus
station for 3 days, desperate for some fortune to come his way. Unable to pay the rent or afford food, his lowest point came when he resorted to selling his dog at the liquor store, to any stranger. He had no money left to feed his dog,
34
I see them all very differently to before, its like I have a personal relationship with them. The relationship-building power of a story is one of the most powerful ways to win people over to your side. All other things equal, we will choose brands to buy, actors to watch, or products to use, because we value the relationship we have with them, maybe we can relate to them in some way.
and had to give it away for $25 bucks, he walked away crying. Us dog lovers can all imagine how he felt. Two weeks later, he happened upon a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner, and that match gave him the inspiration to write the script for the famous movie ROCKY. He got something together in 20 hours, furiously writing what came to his head, before he may lose memory of the most exciting parts. He tried to sell it to the studios, and got offered $125,000 for the script on the first offering. The only snag was that HE wanted to play ROCKY. The studio declined his part in the script. They wanted his script, but not him. The studio said he “looked funny and talked funny”. He left with his script. The studio called him a few weeks later and offered him $250,000 for it. He politely refused, again. They offered $350,000. Again, he refused. He wanted to play ROCKY, and stood by his script until he could get his way.
The moral of this story, and others that you’ll read about, is that having an emotionally connecting story, something that tells your audience who you really are, and how you got to where you are, whether you’re an individual artist, or international brand, can ignite a passion that is rarely seen. 10 minutes of reading can turn an apathetic in to an advocate of such a person or brand. I’m now a Sylvester Stallone fan, a Ryan Gosling fan, and a Matt Damon fan, all because I simply learned their stories.
Its why story-driven companies like Whole Foods, or clothing retailers like Ralph Lauren, do so well, because their market relates to their story. Airbnb commission Pineapple Magazine, a quarterly publication of customerdriven stories to build their relationship with travellers, further. It’s transparent. Consumers can see their values and buy in to them, and follow them. Let me leave a parting thought with you. If you think about your closest friendships and the people you love most in your life, one thing resonates with these relationships more than anything else; the more personal a story is between us, the closer people feel to you.
After a while, the studio accepted defeat, and offered him $35,000 for the script and told him he could play ROCKY. The rest is history. And what do you think the first thing he bought with the $35,000? His dog back from the person he sold it to. Stallone had to pay $15,000 for the same dog he sold for $25 a few months earlier. 35

LYNDON SMITH, A TRUE BEAUTY! BETWEEN PUBLIC MORALS, PARENTHOOD, 90210 AND SECRET IN THEIR EYES, HER ROLES ARE VIRTUALLY LIMITLESS. THIS FASHION-SAVVY ACTOR MOVED FROM THE QUAINT LITTLE TOWN OF PENSACOLA TO DREAMLAND L.A. TO PURSUE HER LIFELONG AMBITION.
On her very rare day off, Smith took the time to sit with BELLO mag to talk beauty, acting, her love of Fashion week and how this move has seen her career catapult to new heights. BELLO mag: What would you say is the best part about living in LA? Lyndon Smith: There is a part of this city for whatever mood you’re in. If I want a chilled quiet day I’ll go over to the Valley but if I want to dress up all fancy I’ll go to Beverly Hills, there are just so many options. To be able to go to the mountains or go to the coastline is amazing. My world became a whole lot bigger when I moved to L.A. BM: How did you enjoy your BELLO mag photo-shoot? LS: I had the best time at the shoot, I’m so excited to see the images, it was just such a good day. As they were shooting I was seeing them pop up on the monitor and I texted a couple to myself. Honestly, they are probably some of my favorite photos I’ve ever seen! BM: I love your Instagram feed! It seems to be very fashion-savvy. Have you made any appearances at any fashion week? LS: I would love to but probably next year. Things have been really busy this 39
year with Public Morals so I didn’t have time but I really love fashion. That’s a guilty pleasure of mine, so definitely next year.
thing. I’m pulling out every trick I have in order to not lose my mind. It’s a lot of pressure! I don’t think it’s conducive to my personality.
BM: You have also mentioned previously that you enjoy your beauty regime. Do you prefer being pampered or do you like to do your own makeup?
BM: So in terms of your acting roles, which character have you enjoyed playing the most out of everything you have appeared on?
LS: I do like to do it myself, I mean I have enough makeup for days! I do have some makeup artists that I do really love working with. It’s not just them doing my makeup though, you develop an actual relationship with your make-up artists, hair stylists and people you work with on photo shoots. It is just so nice to wake up and they are the first people you talk to, there’s a real camaraderie there. I guess I prefer them doing it because I just get to hang out with them. I’m like, “Can you just move into my guest room?”
LS: Hands down Public Morals. We got to play in that world of the 60’s, which is so fantastic, it’s a very desirable time with the hair and the make-up and the gorgeous vintage clothes and the cars. It’s a very immersive world you can get lost in, more so than any other role I’ve played. I never want to leave this character.
BM: As a big fan of beauty and fashion, do you enjoy going to red carpet and press events? LS: I have a love-hate relationship with red carpets actually. I love dressing up, finding the outfit and creating the look but I still get really nervous on carpets. People are screaming at you and there are all these flashes going off and all the while you have to maintain this cool, calm composure, it’s a very surreal
BM: In the future, which actors do you aspire to work with? LS: There are so many great female actors that I look up to. I got to work with Halle Berry this year! I love Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman has done some amazing work also. I never got to work with them directly but Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman absolutely fall into the pedigree of women I one day aspire to be. I’ve grown up watching all these women and have fallen in love with them. To even be on a set with any of them one day would be very inspiring. September 2015 - BELLO

BRAD’S BUZZ BY BRAD LIBERTI, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR
1. Room The pitch at last month’s Toronto Film Festival for this nail-biter from breakthrough Irish writer-director, Lenny Abrahamson (Frank) was that it was ‘Kimmy Schmidt, but as a drama.’ But don’t let the jaded Hollywood speak fool you. Featuring a tour de force performance from hotter-than-ever Brie Larson and a plot that is equal parts touching, insightful, and gut-wrenching, Abraham’s film not only won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, but it also proved he’s one of the most exciting voices in film today.
2. Crimson Peak Nobody does gothic fantasy quite like Mexican auteur, Guillermo del Toro. From Hellboy to Pan’s Labyrinth he’s created entire worlds onscreen that perfectly reflect his delightfully twisted, darkly beautiful aesthetic. Teaming up with a dynamite cast (Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska) and revisiting the genre that he does so well (after 2013’s action extravaganza, Pacific Rim) Crimson Peak promises to be a spooky treat- just in time for Halloween.
3. American Horror Story: Hotel Part Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, part Lady Gaga fever dream, the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s and Brad Falchuk’s über-successful horror anthology series promises to take viewers on a wild and wacky ride. But what else would you expect from this motley crew?

A Place in
Paradise at Fairmont St. Andrews, Scotland WRITTEN BY JON & MARK NORRIS
WHEN MOST OF US HEAD TO THE ALGARVE, SOUTHERN SPAIN, OR THE GREEN GRASS OF ITALY FOR GOLFING BREAKS, WE HEADED TO THE WONDERFULLY INSPIRING AND OSTENTATIOUS HOME OF GOLF – FAIRMONT ST. ANDREWS, A RESORT RANKED IN THE TOP ONE PERCENT BY EXPEDIA IN THE WORLD.

NOT ONLY WAS FAIRMONT THE PLACE WHERE FUTURE KING AND QUEEN OF ENGLAND, PRINCE WILLIAM AND KATE MET, DURING KATE’S AMBLE DOWN THE CATWALK IN A SHEER BLACK LACE DRESS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. ANDREWS ANNUAL FASHION SHOW, BUT THE LINKS COURSES OFFER A REFINED RAREFIELD ATMOSPHERE, WITH MINDBLOWING SCENERY ACROSS THE NORTH SEA, AND FAIRWAYS REMINISCENT OF YOUR PARENTS’ BEST DINING ROOM CARPET. THE TWO CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES, NAMELY THE KITTOCKS AND THE TORRANCE OFFER SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROUNDS OF GOLF IN THE WORLD.
47
With beautiful views of St. Andrews and the old Cathedral on the coastline, every hole at Fairmont offers a different dimension of panoramic joy. Toppled by a Clubhouse overlooking the North Sea, where a pint has never tasted so good at the end of 18 holes, this place really offers everything a keen golfer dreams of, and more.
world to St. Andrews ‘The Home of Golf’, a testament to the charming and stunning attractions that Fairmont St. Andrews has to offer. It really is a pleasure to withhold.
It’s impossible to escape the panoramic views of luscious greens and sea blue serenity. You will awaken in the morning to a glorious view of the Scottish coastline that marks St. Andrews, which can sometimes inhibit your ambitions to even get out of bed in the morning!
When venturing down to the harbors that line St. Andrews, the quaint cobbled side streets, alongside the 1158 built Roman Catholic Cathedral will have you in your element. And we haven’t even mentioned the history that attracts golfers from all over the
Lets delve a little deeper in to the attractions that make visiting such a pleasured and iconic experience:
THE RESORT On arrival, we were greeted by a gloriously helpful concierge team dressed in traditional Scottish attire – and a sense of humor to usher us into the warm reception area. We definitely got a sense of the tradition and culture that surrounds the resort, a place made for golfers, well, and Prince William’s exercise routines, since he was a gym and spa member

at the resort during his studies at St. Andrews University – there is rarely a place like it in the world. The rooms are welcoming and spacious, with views extending across the golf courses and the North Sea, with complimentary internet access included, and even that opportunity to bring your dog for a small fee per night – showing its quality pedigree to all pet owners who wish to visit. For us, one of the best things about the resort was its food and service quality. Breakfast was served in an open plan buffet style, with all you could ever wish to eat. From omelettes cooked freshly in front of you, to a typically Scottish cooked breakfast, including locally sourced ingredients and Scottish favorites such as Haggis and fresh fish caught just off the coast. The breakfast started us off in the best possible way, ready to tackle the challenges that the two Championship courses had in store for us. Fairmont St. Andrews has quite a choice when it comes to fine dining, with local produce, delicious Italian dishes that whisk you away to the small cobbled streets of Italy for one night only, and its Squire restaurant, named after Gene ‘The Squire’ Sarazen, the golfing legend and past winner of the Grand Slam of golf, which treats guests

to a brasserie style dining experience with a grill house flare. A special pick for us was The Clubhouse Restaurant, offering views that cannot be compared anywhere in the world, and a service that matched – a wonderful evening spent by all.
THE SPA We were treated to an appetizing, relaxation experience by the Fairmont Spa team, who indulged us whilst we recovered from the days golfing activity. Perhaps part of a weekend excursion that is sometimes overlooked, I would
definitely recommend paying a visit to the Spa, a priority. The relaxation room and courteous attendants made the experience extra special, certainly something we needed after spending the afternoon walking 18 holes.
THE GOLF COURSES The five-star St. Andrews resort boasts two championship golf courses, which have played host to many prestigious events, including The Open Championship’s final local qualifying round, and home to the Scottish Senior Open, too.
48
The Kittocks or The Torrance courses. The Torrance course provided us with our challenge of the day – set a little in-land and slightly off the coastline, it offers up many of the principles that links golf is known for; risk and reward opportunities on most of the holes. A par of 72 over 7,230 yards originally designed by Sam Torrance, it is rated 26th in Golf Weekly course ratings in 2013 and is home to The Scottish Seniors Open on the European Seniors Tour. It certainly provided us a challenge, with such unforgiving rough, make sure you go prepared and take some spare balls in case you veer off course more times than you intended!
We had the pleasure of playing The Kittocks first, a course that can be a challenge to the lowest of handicappers, but equally as breathtaking and enjoyable for a novice. Elevated above the cliff tops of the St. Andrews coastline, the course plays like a dream – constructed in an American style with the layout and design honoring the tradition of St. Andrews, with double greens, numerous deep bunkers to contend with, and of course the feeling that you are playing one of the very top courses in the world. Highlights have to include the holes hugging the North
49
Sea shoreline, in particular Hole 16 – playing that dog-leg right toward the sea will live in our memory for a long time. After a pleasant evening spent enjoying the local ales in local St. Andrews, we were up bright and early to take advantage of the splendid practice facilities Fairmont St. Andrews has for its guests, which played home to the likes of Jordan Speith during The Open Championship this summer. The open, freshly cut bays offer all you could ever ask for before heading out to play either
The golfing experience was second to none in the world; we could certainly see why Fairmont St. Andrews has been awarded IAGTO European Golf Resort of the Year in 2012 and Resort Hotel of the Year at the Golf Tourism Scotland Awards, which incidentally, was the third time in four years the resort has won the award. Take a trip, we promise you won’t regret it. For more information on Fairmont St. Andrews, please visit their website below: http://www.fairmont.com/st-andrewsscotland/

Your Next Dream Getaway Is Waiting For You In Puerto Vallarta BY BRENT LAMBERT
ABOUT A MONTH AGO, OVER A FEW COCKTAILS AND UNDER A HOT AND A HAZY SUMMER HEAT WAVE IN MONTREAL, MY FRIEND AND I WERE OVERCOME BY A MAJOR DOSE OF MUTUAL SPONTANEITY. BOTH OF US BEING IN BETWEEN CONTRACTS, WE HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD TO TAKE A MUCH-NEEDED VACATION TOGETHER, AND IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES IT WAS DECIDED -- WE WERE OFF TO MEXICO.

would want to be. Separated from the cloned mega hotels further north, the Romantic Zone lives up to its name in every way. Old cobblestone streets filled with small shops, restaurants Photo via by Brent Lambert

and much more -- a welcome relief from the pre-packaged, gated monotony of the resorts up the road. When our cab pulled up to Olas Altas Suites we were met by a handsome waiter at Michel’s, the ground floor Italian restaurant beneath the hotel, right on the main strip. As we sipped on our complimentary glasses of white wine, our bags were whisked away up to our rooms and suddenly the stress of twelve hours’ worth of airports, security and transit magically melted away. I soon found myself unpacking my luggage, enjoying a nap on my king size bed, and getting myself comfortable with my new living room and kitchen suite (which, as I learned by the end of the week, is the only way to travel from now on). For dinner it was a sunset 51

The stunning beach and village of Yelapa, 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta
In the morning, we met up with a friend from back home who was also travelling in the area with her boyfriend. The four of us hopped on water taxi and were on our way for a day trip to the amazingness that is Yelapa, a small, secluded fishing village just due south along the coast. At first glance, I thought I had arrived in

Walking through the narrow, twisting and almost medieval streets of Yelapa, we made our way to the town’s most iconic destination -- the stunning waterfall. The quick jungle trek to get there didn’t do much to help us beat the heat, but a swim in that waterfall’s cool lagoon waters certainly did the trick. That waterfall adventure was like medicine for the body and the soul, and we capped it off at a local pop-up stand nearby with my newest favorite drink in the entire world -- a michelada. Made with a mixture of beer and clamato juice, the unlikely duo is made all the more delicious when capped off with some freshly fried shrimp, spices, and salad which sit right on top the cup.
Michel Pascal Ferrari like it was lost in time. Suddenly the trees up in the hills opened up and we could see Yelapa’s beach down below in its full glory. It was enough to take my breath away. the cluster of tiki huts, homes, sandy streets, and mysterious paths that made up the beach. My day at Yelapa was truly one of the most incredible travel adventures I’ve experienced in as long as I can remember, and it is an absolute must if you’re lucky enough to be in the area yourself someday. The next few days were spent getting to know as much of the area as we could. This was made all the easier by the fact that the Mexican people are perhaps the most beautiful, lovely, and funloving folks I’ve ever known. Combined with the stunning nature and landscape we encountered at every turn, there were many moments throughout this trip that I could imagine myself coming back to Mexico to spend a big chapter of my life in the future. This possibility could be made more viable considering that Mexico was recently ranked #2 in the world by Expat Insider, in a survey which ranked 195 countries worldwide based on levels of happiness, satisfaction, and well-being of more than 14,000 expats.

November 16 to 22, 2015 (see Michel for all the inside tips). Perhaps my favorite option of all is to plan my next trip around Sapphire Ocean Club’s annual New Year’s bash. I’m already counting down the days.

We never wanted for anything and with each visit we were treated like kings and queens. Not only does Sapphire have one of the best restaurants in all of Puerto Vallarta, its refreshing lap pool offers a zen-like alternative to the rough ocean surf. I’m already planning my next trip to Puerto Vallarta, but it’s a tough choice

THIS “CONE OF SILENCE,” IF YOU WILL, IS A STRANGE PREDICAMENT FOR THE WASH.-BORN ACTOR, PEPPERING HIS CONVERSATION WITH BELLO ABOUT THE FIFTH INSTALLMENT OF THE RYAN MURPHY FX ANTHOLOGY WITH “I CAN’T TALK ABOUT IT” AND “YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE”-TYPE RESPONSES.
What audiences will see is “really scary. It’s very dark. It’s very claustrophobic,” he admits during a recent day off from shooting Episode 5 of “Hotel,” premiering October 7. “There’s always scary stuff. There’s always blood. But I feel like psychologically it’s pretty dark in a wonderfully sexy way.”
“good father. He’s attentive. He’s. . .uh, I don’t want to talk to much about that relationship.”
Murphy & Co. keep the secrets of the series close to the vest, Jackson says, describing the material as “precious” to all involved, especially for the sake of viewers. “For all of the fans, there has to be something that you don’t know. So, as much as people think they know, you really don’t know at all.”
A self-proclaimed fan of the “Horror Story” series, this is Jackson’s foray into the sinister world that’s racked up 60 Emmy nominations, winning nine. It’s also the first without perennial favorite Jessica Lange, but anticipation hasn’t waned thanks in part to a marketing campaign serving up disturbing images of someone sewn into a mattress, a blender full of blood, and a bunch of towhead children, among other mysteriously delicious sights.
He concludes that answer with a laugh, a hint of menace in there, something surely imparted on the otherwise friendly and charming 40-year-old by his recent professional surroundings. In “Hotel,” Jackson plays Will Drake, a highly successful, mass-marketed fashion designer who picks up his New York City life, including his young son, and makes the move to Los Angeles where he sets up shop, literally, at Hotel Cortez, run by The Countess, played by Lady Gaga. More on her later. “He didn’t even tell me his name,” Jackson recalls of his first chat with Murphy about joining the show. “He just said, this is what he does, this is kind of what he’s about, this is the world in which he inhabits.” About Will Drake and the kind of father he is, Jackson describes him as a 57
Whether Drake is a single father or not, “that is something that we haven’t found out yet. . .or that you guys haven’t found out yet. But you will soon.”
an interview with Jessica Lange when I got the part, just to hear her perspective because I’m such a fan,” he says, “and she said that’s the real fun thing about it because you can let your imagination really run wild. You don’t get too much in your head and just jump into the deep end of the pool.”
“We all know kind of a general idea about who we’re playing, and then as it gets closer we get specifics,” he explains. “So part of the fun is that we don’t know the end result, and we all just, with bated breath, wait to see what happens.”
And he did just that, literally, with his fellow castmates at a party Lady Gaga threw at her Los Angeles home where she dyed the pool water bloodred, images of which she shared on Instagram. A long-time fan of the multiple-Grammy Award winner, Jackson included Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” in his set list when he made his solo debut earlier this year at New York City’s famed Café Carlyle in an intimate and personal show he titled “Eyes Wide Open”—a 12-night engagement where he entertained audiences with songs including “Falling Slowly” from the Oscar-winning-movie-turned-TonyAward-winning-Broadway-musical “Once,” as well as some from Elvis Presley, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, and more.
It’s not exactly the way Jackson is used to working, especially with all of the Broadway roles—his credits include All Shook Up, Damn Yankees, Xanadu and Alter Boyz, to name a few. He has rehearsed endlessly, learned the insand-outs of, and inhabited night after night for live audiences. His excitement about taking up residence in “Hotel” was only solidified thanks to what one of the series’ stars said. “I was reading
Call him humble or shy, but Jackson hasn’t revealed to Gaga that he performed her song. He has found, however, that they have a lot in common, their mutual admiration of Cole Porter among them. Her music prowess and knowledge are no surprise, really, but Jackson admits he didn’t know what to expect from her as an actor and scene partner. “I only knew her as a singer and such, but I am so impressed with September 2015 - BELLO

her commitment, with her enthusiasm, with her research, and with her skill level. She’s fantastic! She’s really, really great.” As excited as he was to work with her, it was Kathy Bates, who won an Emmy for her performance as Madame LaLaurie in “AHS: Coven,” who gave him a real “pinch me” moment. “Every single day on set is an ‘oh shit!’ moment,” he says, “[but] my very first scene was shot with my favorite actress of all time, Kathy Bates. Being a fan of the show and being a fan of all these people in their own right, with Kathy in particular, I’ve just loved her for so many years. My very first scene was when our characters meet. Soooo…” he trails off, still giddy thinking about it. But the show is certainly no laughing matter. Murphy has said addiction is a theme of this season, and Will Drake has his own. “He’s definitely addicted to creativity and inspiration. He’s missing it. It was such a thing that drove him as a younger man and a younger designer to start all of this, and without it he’s really kind of going crazy. So he really craves that inspiration and the excitement,” Jackson says. “He wants to really make some kickass stuff again.” So does Jackson, who says he’s inspired daily by his husband and family, but also in challenging himself, both professionally and personally. “I’ve talked about my sobriety before, being a sober person now going on three years, and how that is manifesting in my work, my everyday life. It’s really wonderful,” he reflects. “So what is inspiring to me is working with people of this caliber, where the stakes are so high and where the expectations are so high, and everybody just delivers. Every day you go in and you’re in these scenes with Wes Bentley and Chloë Sevigny and Mare Winningham. It’s an embarrassment of riches, and I’m just so happy to be there!”
