With your family being so involved in the arts, did you know at a young age that you wanted to be part of the world of the arts? Was becoming an actor your first dream? I was always surrounded by art, and encouraged to be interested in it, but it wasn't really until I was about 13 that it hit me that I could be an actor and artist at any age. It wasn't something I had to "grow up" to be. So I was lucky that I started taking acting seriously from a young age. But before that I think my parents knew I was going to be involved in arts in some form. I was always singing, and ALWAYS drawing growing up. My mom has a massive binder of all my drawings with the age I was when I drew it written at the bottom. Some of them really blow my mind. I actually got in trouble in school when I was around 10 years old because I drew a very accurate rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, you know the naked man sketch with all the arms and legs? They couldn't fathom that an 10 year old knew what that was so they thought it was something bad, but it was literally me at 10 interested in Leonardo da Vinci.
Having different cultural backgrounds, what made you want to move to Los Angeles and how does it feel compared to Brazil? Los Angeles was always on my radar because its the hub of all things film and TV, but I lived in many big cities before landing here. And of course, its very different culturally than Brasil, but there's a lot of similarities in the lifestyle here to the lifestyle in parts of Sao Paulo where I grew up. I mean Sao Paulo is HUGE, so I've always felt very at home in big busy cities.
You played the role of Gabe on the sensational hit TV show “Teen Wolf”, how has this experience helped you evolve as an actor and a young adult? It was the first time on screen I got to play a role over many episodes so it taught me so much about myself as an actor watching it back and watching my character develop, and then later how it was received by people. I think during the process I was really working hard but I was also figuring a lot out as I went, so now coming out of that experience I just feel so lucky to have been able to exercise a lot of my training. My confidence has grown, my gratefulness for getting to be someone with opportunities like that has grown, and I think my vision for where I want to go has sharpened.
Recently, you went back home to Brazil where you were awaited with such a warm welcome, did you expect this? How did it feel to have had such an impact on people thousands of miles away? You know that was one of the coolest moments of my life. I was totally not expecting even a fraction of that. Being with my whole family at the airport and being greeted by a big crowd of fans, who must've been waiting there for hours, they had no idea when I was landing, and to be people from my home country reacting to me like that, it was incredible. I'm really happy my mom and siblings were with me to see that.
Besides cinema, what other realms of art do you gravitate to? I've aways been into singing and writing fiction. Drawing and painting I don't do as much lately but when I do I get very into it. I think music is definitely my second love after acting.
How would you describe the culture in Brazil? Name one of your characters traits that best illustrates this cultural background of yours. Brazil just has such a vibrant energy to it. I love how warm and open the people are. I love the mix of different economical backgrounds. The jungle and cities blending together, and of course the food! I think the most cultrually Brazilian part embedded in me is how I can be open with strangers and really vibe like we're best friends even when we've just met.
What is next for Andrew Matarazzo? Most immediately on my list I'm heading to Europe for some Teen Wolf reunions and to meet the fans at a couple conventions; Rome, Paris and Amsterdam. There's some cool projects swimming around. There's a chance, by the end of the year, that fans will see me on a show I know they will be very excited about.
If you could be a color, which one would it be? Some shade of green on the darker side.
