Dear OOA, What a fabulous competition you have this month at The Oyster Box, what a surprise and well done for elevating the magazine to a new level. We have entered and really hope we get to go and use the Durban guide you have compiled! Very exciting to see such quality produced in Zimbabwe Ian, Harare Dear OOA, We have had visitors staying with us, and I must mention that the Top Table Guide has been with us in the car, or by the phone for weeks. We have booked all our restaurant meals through Out of Africa’s food and restaurant guide. I really enjoyed seeing the average main course prices and corkages. Thanks again . We would love to have ideas and contact numbers for takeaways or even a review on what the best or top ten takeaways are in Harare. Rutendo, Harare Dear OOA, I look forward to every issue now, and often drive to a few or more places to find it! I am glad you’re now doing subscriptions, so it can arrive at our door. I am going to give as a gift to my in laws too. Thanks. Tony, Harare Dear OOA, We were happy to recently discover OOA! We were all at lunch and were offered something new to read while we were waiting. The Top Table is great and would be nice to extend the mini restaurant guide now to other places, e.g.. outside of Harare and Byo. Thanks and we will look out for the next April issue. Natasha, Mutare
em@ilofthemonth Dear OOA team, Wow, what can I say the magazine is fantastic. This March edition is my second copy and I am amazed at the quality of content and presentation. Though I would like to see features on skin care, health, make overs, profiles of normal successful people who can inspire our youth or some of us. Overall, it is a good mag and of high standard and competes fairly with other imported mags. OOA you have won me over, I will buy a copy every month its refreshing and makes me proud to be a Zimbabwean. Regards Noma Hi Noma.. Thanks for your encouraging email, we have included the first (of many) interviews. See our interview with Jonathan Denga inside. We will be featuring skin care articles in our next “Winter Edition”. Thanks for your letter, and enjoy your wine!

Top Things To Do In Cape Town If you are heading to Cape Town this holiday, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Cape Town is a mecca for all things new and exciting. Go exploring with these great ideas from OOA.
1.
Catch a cable car up Table Mountain - Opened in 1929, the Cableway has transported over 18 million visitors to the iconic flat summit. Meander along the pathways leading to the various jaw-dropping vantage points for views of Table Bay, Robben Island and Cape Point, and then head to the newly renovated Table Mountain Café for a well prepared meal. You get spectacular views over Cape Town.
2.
Dive into shark-infested waters South Africa has an incredibly diverse shark population. A quarter of the world’s shark species dwell in South African waters and around 40 of these call the waters around Cape Town home. You can go shark diving with these amazing and dangerous creatures. This is not for the faint hearted.
3.
. Robben Island is an essential attraction for any visitor to Cape Town. Take a short boat ride to this intriguing island that became a symbol of cruel oppression during the apartheid era. Visit the prison cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life.
4.
Go underwater at the Two Oceans Aquarium - Visit this fantastic under water world where you can see the most bizarre sea creatures. By far the most popular attraction is the Predator Tank with ragged tooth sharks, blue stingrays and black mussel crackers, all swimming together in harmony - until feeding time, of course.
5.
Houses of Parliament - Steeped in history these buildings have seen their fair

share of action. You can watch a parliamentary sitting unfold from one of the gallery seats, or take a guided tour through the building and find out how this South African democracy actually works.
6.
. Visit all the cafes and bars on Long Street. Long Street is the place for partying. This is the most popular street if you are into bars, nightclubs and cafes. There are various different venues to suit almost everyone. Start at the bottom and wander up to the top.
7.
Go driving and find some new spots. Beta Beach: Situated a convenient ten minutes’ drive from the city centre, this postage-stamp-sized beach is flanked by big boulders, which makes it great for swimming as well as uninterrupted sun-bathing.
8.
Oudekraal lies right next door to Beta Beach. It offers a protected cove at the bottom of a steep set of stairs, which is surrounded by a thicket of milkwood trees. Since this area forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, there’s a R10 entrance fee, but it’s a minor amount to pay for the splendour that waits inside.
9.
Smitswinkelbaai - Further out of town, and heading in the direction of Cape Point, keep a lookout for the tiny gravelled parking area by the side of the road between Simon’s Town and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Once there, dash across the road and commence a 15-minute downward amble along the overgrown footpath until you reach the unspoilt, isolated Smitswinkelbaai. The view of the lush valley is well worth the extra effort involved in getting here and the calm water makes for great snorkelling.
10.
Tietiesbaai - Just under two hours’ drive from town, Tietiesbaai is situated in the Cape Columbine Reserve
on the West Coast. It boasts carpets of colourful wild flowers in spring and a guaranteed soundtrack of silence thanks to the prohibition of anything noisy. Peaceful and tranquil!
11.
Go to Boulder’s Beach to see the penguins. Enjoy some beach time with the endearing jackass penguins (so-called because of their unrefined singing voices that resemble those of braying jackasses) who call the African Penguin Colony at Boulder’s Beach home. However, the penguin smells can be quite over powering!
12.
Eat lots and lots of Seafood Some of the world’s finest tuna can be found off South Africa’s shores and luckily Cape Town’s chefs snap some of it up before it’s shipped to Japan. The prawns you’ll find on local menus are generally well priced. Capetonians are big on linecaught fish and if yellowtail or cob is on offer, be sure to order it. But try to steer clear of kingklip, as it’s on the soon-to-bethreatened list. Restaurants are increasingly aware of eco-friendly seafood choices and

Take High Tea - At the elegantMount Nelson Hotel, known by locals as the Pink Palace, boasts the best afternoon tea in the world – and a host of international foodies and travel writers agree.
Cape wine enjoys an impressive reputation, and the Winelands are home to most of South Africa’s premier wine estates. The good news is that nearly every farm and estate in the area offers wine-tasting: you’ll need a designated driver, though. Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are the largest, nearest and most famous towns in the region, but the further you go the more you’ll discover. The Winelands, and their rustic, rural gems such as Robertson and Montagu, offer more than just wine. Visit more on www.tourismcapetown.co.za
14.
Night out in St-Tropez of Cape Town - This classy cove offers an array of swish bars and restaurants, Riviera-style palm trees and yachts bobbing on the water. As you cruise down the Victoria Road stretch, the rows of ritzy drinking holes with their blinged-up, tanned-to-atee and beautiful patrons mean that you’re unlikely to be winning any best-dressed trophies should you turn up in flip-flops and a weather-beaten sarong.

. Newlands Rugby Stadium Visit the home of the Stormers. At 119 years, it is the second-oldest rugby stadium in the world. Enthusiasts and stalkers alike can retrace their heroes’ steps through the players’ entrance and locker rooms. Take a tour and see where it all happens.
17.
Shopping at the V&A - If a visit to the V&A Waterfront is not on the cards then it should be. Some of the most stylish shops and boutiques can be found here. Mingle with the rich and famous and pick out something nice to wear. You will also find the usual and most popular high street brands available.
18.
. Discover the Cape Jazz rhythm. Cape Town’s jazz scene is a crucial part of its heritage. The city’s rich jazz tradition stems from artists finding inspiration in their struggles during the apartheid years. Since then, the music has evolved into its own genre, Cape Jazz, a style with a distinct African spice. It’s a way of life in the Cape – and you’ll find it everywhere from the heart of the townships to the most lavish cigar lounge.
20.
Grand West Casino and Entertainment World - There are an amazing amount of activities for children. From ice skating, ten pin bowling, go karting, mini golf, arcade games and much much more. If you are in Cape Town and the kids are bored, then this is the place for you. The adults can even go to the casino.

BUSINESS
“You have everything you need to build something far bigger than yourself.” -Seth Godin
Everyone will have to exit their business at some point in the future. What value will you or your estate realise when your business is sold? Many small businesses do not survive once the owner is no longer able to manage it, either through illness, disability or death. We have seen hundreds of local businesses disappearing in very short periods of time. Will yours survive beyond you? One would not want to waste many valuable years and a lot of money building something that will disappear like smoke when they leave. We all desire to build businesses that last, that will leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren for many years to come. But many entrepreneurs fail to do that because they don’t follow certain rules. Start working on these five rules and begin building a lasting business. Put an effective team into place You cannot build anything significant on your own. A business consists of many functions. You simply don’t have all the skills needed to run all the functions effectively. Nor do you have the time and energy to manage everything. You need a team to help you. Team selection must be done very carefully. You need people who share
16
5 Rules for building a lasting business your vision and values; people who have objectives similar to yours and skills that complement your own and add value to your business. With an effective team in place you can be away from the business and it will keep on running. Look at companies like Econet in Zimbabwe; Mr. Masiyiwa was able to move on and let his team run the business. The same is true with Mr. Chanakira at Kingdom Holdings. To succeed as entrepreneurs, we need to learn from those who have succeeded in building lasting businesses. Build an asset of loyal customers Without customers you have no business. The market is no longer ruled by suppliers as it was in the old days of shortages and controls. With the market naked as it is, new competitors can come in and take over your customers. You need to build a base of loyal customers. This entails making your company and everyone in the business customer-centric. Put customer responsiveness at the top of your priorities. You need to know everything about your customers. Harvey MacKay said his people know more about their customers than even the Internal Revenue Service (US tax authority). Anticipate customers’ needs. Exceed their expectations. Your brand has to be associated with excellent customer service; that way they become an asset that will continue to support your business even when you leave. Have a solid network Apart from your internal team, you need other people from outside to help you build and grow your business. These are people who can help you solve problems, access resources, connect with potential customers and link you with others who can help your business move up in the market. Your people must network and build relationships with those in other companies- your key customers, suppliers, bankers and financiers, service providers and even competitors. Relationships that cascade through all the levels are an asset to the company. Manage the financial health of your business Do you know the turnover of your business? How about the profit? Many entre-
preneurs are too busy running the business to take time to look at the finances. Financial performance reflects the overall health of the company. Pause and look at your business, not only from the perspective of a source of income for you, but through the eyes of an outside buyer or investor. What would your business look like to an astute business person who is unfamiliar with your industry? What return on investment would it offer? Would you like to make this a more attractive proposition? If so, take steps to turn your entity into a healthy business. Perfect your competitive advantage With so much competition in our open market, your business must be distinctive to your customers. What is it that you do better than others that keeps customers coming back? Is it a sustainable competitive advantage? With time, competitors will copy the competitive advantages of any business that is successful in its market. You need to continually review your key selling propositions and improve on them to stay ahead of competitors. Invest in research and product and service development to keep your products and services relevant to customers and at the top in the market. If you are still doing things the way you did a decade ago, your business is probably no longer competitive and might not last long. To build a lasting business that will be valuable years from now, follow these rules and keep on learning from those who have built successful businesses. To learn more from remarkable entrepreneurs, download the interviews we have recorded on our website, http://smebusinesslink.com. Please email me your thoughts and comments. Best wishes in building your business. Phillip Chichoni is a strategic business planning and financial management consultant who works with entrepreneurs and SMEs. Jonathan Denga Jonathan has had international success by taking on numerous fashion campaigns, print, television and became a favourite of Vivienne Westwood. Jonathan is arguably the most successful black male model to ever come out of the African continent, and continues to work as a model and ambassador supporting worthy causes in Africa. By Sarah Cullen Q When did you and what made you decide you wanted to be a model? A It was kind of like an innate ability that I never knew I had until later on in my life. Why I say innate is because it goes as far back as when I was seven years old, and I was chosen to do my first commercial for Tanganda. I did not realize what I had until I became a sportsman, and my physique became ideal for modeling. My basketball captain at the time, who worked for Lintas Advertising Agency, said to me “Look, I’ve got a shoot I’d like you to try out for”. And so I did, and from then on my modelling career took off. There are a series of events from then on to the time I was chosen the male super model of Zim. Q How old are you? How tall are you? A I’m 41 years old in March this year and I’m 6 ft 4”. Q What did you do after you left school? A I did a computer course and got a diploma in Computer Programming. I also played lots of basketball. I also worked for Air Zimbabwe briefly, just before my modeling career took off because that was the time when Air Zimbabwe and Zim Sun came up with Zimbabwe Super Model competition and for the first time had incorporated male models into the competition. That was in 1996. I was chosen as winner “Zimbabwe Super Male Model” and the winners were offered contracts with G3 Modeling Agency in South Africa. And so began an international modeling career that took me to many places around the world. From being in South Africa and having been fully initiated into the industry, I then did several campaigns which included the Gillette Blue 2 razor, which ran for 7 years in Africa. I then left to go to England where I did music videos with the likes of Bebe Winans, Louise from the R&B group

Eternal, Bizi who was a renowned British reggae artist at the time and I featured in The British Ebony magazine. Whilst I was in England I did the launch of one of Vivienne Westwood’s lines “Anglomania” in 1997 which ran billboards globally, in New York, Paris, Milan, Tokyo and other parts of the world. I can really say this was one of the climaxes of my career. I did a lot of travelling around England and Europe. After that, I took on the United States market challenge, which isn’t a very easy feat to accomplish. I visited a few agencies and ended up working for an agency, which they call a “fit agency” whereby they make the clothes on your body and do walk-throughs in studio before the major runways. I didn’t spend as much time in America as I would have wanted to - I just hit the tip of the iceberg in the American market. My campaigns over the years of my modeling career have spanned from alcoholic to soft beverages, clothing, automotive, financial industries, the list goes on. I also did work for Coca-Cola and did their Coca-Cola Africa Campaign: Gillette Gel advert which went into Africa: Sprite sub Saharan Africa campaign: Globacom Nigeria: Guinness Africa: Banco Espirito in Angola : Zain Cellular, Africa and Arab region: Liberty Life SADC region Q Are you still modelling? If not, what are you doing? A Modelling, yes on a special calling “Brand Ambassador”and Endorsements basis; for example if a client is looking for brand association of some sort. The way I look it, I am a brand that has achieved some value in the marketplace and association with that brand will add value to your product. Brand association and endorsements I will do. But to say that I wake up everyday to do a casting and “go see” or photo shoot here or commercial there, no I don’t do that anymore. What I do now back in Zimbabwe is Corporate Training, the soft skills side of
INTERVIEW
an organization’s human resource. The training hones in, on customer service strategy, whereby we want to help people better their skills in dealing with customers, internally and externally. By this I am referring to developing skills such as business protocol, grooming, chivalry and etiquette, wine savvy and silver service - the art of fine dining entertainment, etc. It’s a 2-day intensive course which culminates with a silver service lunch on the second afternoon. Q What are your top 3 things about living in Zimbabwe? Number one 1 it’s home. Nothing ever beats the fact that it’s home. But secondly it’s just a great opportunity that is coming post the troubles that this nation has faced in the recent past. All of a sudden Zimbabwe has become a hub for such great opportunities, you can literally become whoever you want to be in Zimbabwe which I think is the greatest opportunities and hence most people are being attracted back to the country. There are attractions that are so vast and dynamic, from Lake Kariba to the mountains in the east, to Gonarezhou National Park. It’s so diverse in its attractions, to such an extent that it makes it a gem of a country. Q What was a typical day like for you? A day in the life of Jonathan Denga when he was a professional model started with him getting up, if there were times that I need to train or prepare for a certain show or shoot, I would get up at 5.30 and do a 10km run, then I’d have my oats and bananas for breakfast. In between that you would have audi-
tions, if you don’t have a shoot you then would do your “go sees” to clients, castings here and there. If it’s a day to work I would proceed to my photo shoot or commercial shoot. Then your lunch would be tuna and other light fishes with pastas or brown rice as your starch. The day proceeds into the afternoon and if you don’t have any photo shoots or any other assignment, you would do what they call the “go see” whereby you go and see prospective clients and network and make sure that you prepare for your next job. Then in the evenings you would have chicken breast, with a bit of a salad; a very simple dinner - pure protein. If there were functions you were invited to, that’s where you’ll go. That’s pretty much a day in a model’s life. It’s very dynamic and not cast in stone. It just depends on where you have to be and what you have to do according to what the client wants. In my days now I will normally be up by 6.30 am, I don’t do as much physical training anymore! I prepare for the day with oats in the morning, which is a good carbohydrate to maintain my shape. Then I spend most of my days training or networking with leads, creating appointments and taking clients to lunches or coffees and generally building the client base for the Soft skills training products that we offer. Sometimes days are spent meeting business people in other arenas so as to learn about where new opportunities in the industry may be. Photo shoot by Michelle Fortmann

Red and Yellow Peppers Compared to green peppers, red peppers have more vitamins and nutrients and contain the antioxidant lycopene. The level of carotene, like lycopene, is nine times higher in red peppers. Red peppers have twice the vitamin C content of green peppers. Also, one large red bell pepper contains 209 mg of vitamin C, which is three times the 70 mg of an average orange. Asimina triloba, the pawpaw, paw paw, paw-paw, or common pawpaw, is a species of Asimina (the pawpaw genus) in the same plant family (the Annonaceae) as the custardapple, cherimoya, sweetsop, ylang-ylang and soursop. The pawpaw is native to the Eastern, Southern, and Midwestern United States and adjacent southernmost Ontario, Canada, from New York west to southeastern Nebraska, and south to northern Florida and eastern Texas. Onions
The humble onion is found in every kitchen, but its curative powers make it an important medicinal plant too. Like garlic, it is a member of the lily family. There can be no doubting the power of the juices contained in onions; anyone who has ever sliced one and shed a tear is only too aware that they hold something special. Quite apart from its medicinal properties the onion is simply delicious. It forms the basis of so many dishes - whether raw, sautĂŠed, baked, steamed or boiled, that it would be difficult to imagine the cuisine of any country without it.

Iceburg Lettuce
By Sarah Cullen

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an annual plant of the aster or sunflower family Asteraceae. It is most often grown as a leaf vegetable, but sometimes for its stem and seeds. Lettuce was first cultivated by the ancient Egyptians who turned it from a weed, whose seeds were used to produce oil, into a plant grown for its leaves. Lettuce spread to the Greeks and Romans, the latter of whom gave it the name “lactuca”, from which the English “lettuce” is ultimately derived.

An elegant affair...
By ‘The Top Table Secret Diner’ Victoria 22 has established and maintained an excellent reputation for fine dining so my wife and I were looking forward to our recent Friday lunch there. It is a gracious house with timeless elegance in a beautiful garden setting in Newlands.
thin slices of melt in the mouth ostrich on crisp lettuce leaves , topped with a sliced mushroom , and a cream, mustard, parsley and dill sauce. At first sight I thought the mushroom was an unnecessary affectation, however it went brilliantly with the ostrich and sauce . My wife’s starter had generous rosettes of Salmon artfully placed on red lettuce, beside perfectly ripe avocado slices, crisp toast and a bowl of exquisite dill dressing.
We were met at the door and shown quickly to our table. As we passed the very well stocked bar we were asked if we would like a pre-lunch drink. We decided to enjoy the wine we had brought ($5 Corkage) at the table and take time to peruse the menu.
The ‘Medaglion di Filetta’ of two lean, soft as butter, medallions of beef was cooked as ordered – medium to rare. Accompanied by thin chips, crisp and golden on the outside but fluffy inside and a melange of French beans, carrot sticks and red pepper cooked ‘al dente’. The Green Peppercorn Sauce had the right combination of sweet and Soon after we were seated our waiter brought the sour and confirmed our initial impression that here menus. These provide ample choice for all tastes was a Chef who really understood sauces and including vegetarian. At this point the Hostess seasoning. joined us to tell us about the Specials of the Day. My wife mentioned her preference for a meatThe ‘Ravioli al Gorgonzola a Zucca’ was heavenly. less option whereupon the impressive vegetarian Home made pasta pillows filled with vibrant green menu was produced. We were then advised that spinach in a delicate Gorgonzola sauce with wafers EVERYTHING on both menus was available! of caramelised butternut, scattered with crunchy The menu was varied and interesting. It had six starters from $11 -$16. They include calamari and halloumi. Mains range from $23-26. The main options included dorado, prawns, beef fillet, pork tenderloin, duck breast and chicken breast. We chose ‘Smoked Salmon and Avocado’ starter from the Special of the day ($17) for my wife, followed by ‘Ravioli al Gorgonzola a Zucca’ ($20) and for me, the committed carnivore, ‘Ostrich Carpaccio’ ($15) followed by ‘Medaglion di Filetta’ ($24).
walnuts and drizzled with fresh pesto - the flavours of the dish combined beautifully. We then decided to share a dessert of ‘Torta al Limone’ ($8) – A lush, light and fresh lemon curd cheesecake. The crust just right, neither rock hard nor crumbly, accompanied by perfectly ripe and juicy strawberries and a tart, tasty raspberry coulis. Definitely a dessert for adults and quite delightful.
The staff were attentive at all times, our wine glasses were never empty. The atmosphere is After the order was taken the waiter offered us a comfortable and relaxing. Linen tablecloths and selection of breads. We had a slight niggle. At lunch napkins , polished cutlery and elegant glassware the bread is bought in but at dinner it is cooked on set the mood . The décor is bright and light, with site. However it was fresh and a varied choice. A fresh flowers and original art work. You can sit bit of inside information – there is plain butter or discreetly in a quiet corner overlooking the garden herb butter with a hint of garlic – go for the herb! or enjoy a table on the popular verandah. We asked for the Wine List which is small but well thought out with a wide variety of wine styles Whites range from $20-35 and reds from $25$70, as well as by the glass . In deference to my wife’s Ravioli I suggested we have another white wine but then she spotted a South African wine from a producer neither of us had heard of: a 2006 Adoro Red Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Mouvedre ($35) which was a real find and which we both thoroughly enjoyed as it went well with both our main courses.
Defined as a luxury restaurant in The Robertson Winery Top Table Guide, our visit to Victoria 22 confirms this reputation. It is not cheap but I have paid $20 for a steak at many other restaurants which didn’t even come close to this one so it is value for money. When you walk out of Vic 22 you have had a true dining experience. The memory lingers and you will want to return. Open for Lunch Tuesday to Friday only Open for Dinner Monday to Saturday, Closed Sunday

APPEASE YOUR APPETITE AT ARNALDO’S
Peri-Peri sauce. It was delicious and was just the right heat. (it was enjoyed with both my bread and main course). We looked through the menu - the menu is not extensive, however, this need not be a fault if every item is exceptional! Sadly, this was not proven to be the case. I chose Portuguese Spicy Beef Kebabs ($5), my companion chose Chicken Livers ($4), my beef skewers were perfectly spiced and tender, the livers unfortunately were very over-cooked and mushy.
By ‘The Top Table Secret Diner’ It was with great anticipation mixed in with a thread of trepidation that we headed out to have Sunday lunch at the new Arnaldo’s: in anticipation of a good Portuguese chicken and in trepidation of the possibility of them being fully booked, as we had not managed to find a contact number. We tried the cell for Arnaldo’s Restaurant in Graniteside, but with no success. We arrived on this rather overcast day to find we could comfortably sit outside, albeit on a rather wobbly chair, which was swiftly sorted out. Considering the restaurant is in the less than attractive surroundings of the Kensington Shopping Centre car park, they have made brilliant use of trellises and pot plants to help diners feel they are in a totally different atmosphere. The ambience of the restaurant is brought to life by bright and cheerful paintings of Mozambique sea scenes with linen, cutlery and glassware of good quality; the paper napkins being the exception. The walls are a mix of blues and whites, with tables and chairs ‘white-washed’. It is modern and simple. There is Wi-Fi available to customers as there is a hotspot in the restaurant. I found the bathroom facilities to be clean and fresh. The Manager was very aware of his patrons and had a pleasant professional manner with everyone and we did hear soft background music playing interspersed with the fountain bubbling away near us. We ordered a light crisp white wine to go with our meal, which was in stock (not always guaranteed), and was presented to us in a well-iced bucket. After an initial minor stutter, the service, with waitrons well-dressed and smiling, was excellent. They were attentive without being intrusive. To start off, we received complimentary bread, which was lovely and fresh, along with a trio selection of toppings. These were butter, garlic butter and an appetising tomato gravy. The bread wasn’t warm, however it was fresh. We were offered a refill of bread basket, so at the same time I asked for some

As a main course my partner chose the Mozambican Prawns and Chips ($20), ten good sized prawns: well-cooked and juicy. I chose the Half Chicken ($11) which comes in mild, medium and hot. Having being informed that hot is really hot! I went for medium, which I found to be tasty, tender and moist but very mild for my personal taste. With your main meal you are offered the options: chips, mashed potato or Greek salad. The chips were delicious, home-made, crispy and golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My Greek Salad was plentiful, varied and had oodles of good quality feta. No dressing came, however a light, tangy vinaigrette arrived very promptly with many apologies when queried. For those who value dessert as the main part of their meal this is not the place for you! There are only two choices, Chocolate Mousse ($4) and a basic vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce ($3), both the components of the latter appearing to be store bought. They were served in extremely uninspired vessels and I found the mousse to be disappointing: runny and grainy. Some more attention to the pudding menu would add real value to the restaurant. It would be good to see something unusual or more authentic for this part of the menu. Something creative with Filo Pastry, authentic Portuguese custard tarts or grilled fresh fruit skewers with a dipping sauce: a Mediterranean dessert that could be prepared freshly in minutes. Overall, although there were a few faults, it was a pleasant experience, perfect portion sizes and reasonably priced. We did try the cell number again the following day, it was answered promptly. The Perfect Mojito
Experience the original Bacardi
Mojito...
Although the exact origins of the Mojito and its names are unclear, it is thought to go back to a medicinal drink called the Drake. Named after Sir Francis Drake, the Drake was originally a mix of raw cane spirit, sugar, lime and mint and was said to drive out fevers and colds. In the 1890’s, the men who invented the world’s most awarded spirit, Don Facundo Bacardi replaced the cane spirit with Bacardi Superior Rum and made it long, and so the world popular Bacardi Mojito was born!
THE PERFECT MOJITO
OUT OF AFRICA
The irresistible essence of fresh mint combines with BACARDI Superior Rum, the tangy taste of lime juice and sugar to create the famous Mojito - a fragrant, refreshing drink that’s both sweet and dry. A Mojito can be enjoyed anywhere as it is so simple to make. 1 Part Bacardi Rum 3 Parts Soda Water 12 Mint Leaves 1/2 Lime 1/2 Part Sugar Place 12 mint leaves, 1/2 part sugar and 1/2 lime in a glass. Muddle well with a pestle. Add BACARDI, top off with soda water. Stir well and garnish with sprigs of mint or a lime wheel or wedges.

Adding Blue & White COOl BLUES add relaxation to any room By Sarah Cullen Evoking the sea and skies with a few perfect clouds, a blueand-white palette brings comfort and style that’s cool, calm, and collected. Get inspired by this roundup of our favourite finds in this timeless colour combination. If you’re going bold, you could consider a stylish and modern painted floor (left), this makes everything white brighter and gives an instant relaxing room. Coupled with natural rattan materials and some potted palms: you could be forgiven for thinking you were on a beach island, (well, almost!). • The colour blue can be bold and bright or soft and soothing. Decide on one feature wall in a bold colour and consider
using softer creams or sands on the other walls. •
Light blue, brown, and beige create a sophisticated palette. Try it in a living room: painting everything white including light wood floors to keep it feeling airy.
•
White and blue stripes give this guest room a nautical feel, (above) while large leather headboards add texture to break up the wall. The lattice-like pattern on the throw pillows also provides dimension and contrast against the bold stripes.
•
Eclectic Works! Use a variety of similar hued fabrics to create an elegant blue and white theme. Multiple patterns can work together if they are of a similar hue. E.g. All pastels patterns can combine and mingle well to create a stylish bedroom, verandah or sitting room.
Style File COVER IT BLANK CANVAS Adding colour to a room doesn’t have to involve paint. White walls and whitewash furniture in this hallway (LEFT) create a gentle backdrop for a collection of cool blue accessories and decorative elements. A vase filled with orange roses adds a splash of contrasting colour for visual interest.
We love this idea: Re-invent an existing or plain lamp shade with a bold navy stripe (left). This is a great way to add a smaller amount of stripes to any room. See steps at www.cleverlyinspired.com.
MAKE IT
Find cotton striped or ticking to make a duvet cover that is cool and calming to sleep in. Perfect for guest rooms and for relaxed and laid-back decor. Cool blues complement both light and dark woods too.

Top 10 Tiling Tips Renovating your home with tiles will improve your lifestyle and add value to your home. Tiling a room can get expensive if you get professionals in, but with a bit of planning and careful thought, it can be one of the most satisfying types of DIY projects. We share our top ten tips to make tiling a breeze. 1. work in small amounts When tiling, make sure you only work in small areas (up to one square metre). This will ensure that the glue does not set before you have laid the tiles. 2. use grout wisely The same goes if you are mixing up your own grout. Make it in small quantities so it is used up, rather than setting hard before you use it.
5. get everything even with a spacer Use a spacer (min. 3mm) between each tile to allow an even space for the grout joint. If you don’t have spacers, use the same denomination coin or matchsticks to ensure even spacing. Remove them 12 hours after placement (carefully!) 6. keep the area clear for 24 hours after If tiling the floor, don’t walk on the floor at least 24 hours when using a standard adhesive and 2-5 hours when using a quick setting adhesive. You don’t want to spoil all the hard work! 7. the smaller the area, the smaller the tile Mosaic tiling is very useful especially in the kitchen where there are lots of electric sockets to work around. But mosaic tiles can be pricey. Try and use them in the areas where they would be most useful and then use standard tiles for the rest of the area. 8. choose the right tile for the application 8. Tiles can retain moisture, especially if you use natural material tiles such as limestone. If you use them in the bathroom, try and limit their use to the key areas and seal them properly rather than tiling the entire room or you may have a problem with damp.
3. Do a test layout before If you are planning on using tiles of different colours, it is definitely worthwhile placing the tiles out to test the order in which you will finally fix them. This will ensure that the colours are evenly spaced and look great. 4. work from multiple tile boxes The same applies if you have more than one box of the same colour. Make sure you use tiles from each box rather than one box at a time as there may be slight differences.
9. tiles do break so do make allowances Always allow a number for breakages! A good estimate is about 10-15% breakages. If you are lucky enough to not break any while tiling them, make sure to keep them. This will mean in future, should a tile need replacing, you have spares.
Calculating Tips Step 1: Enter all the wall or floor areas that are going to be tiled. You should enter the total height and width of the wall or floor Step 2 Deduct non tiled areas from the final total, including doors, windows etc. Pieces per metre calculations 1 ÷ width of tile ÷ length of tile = Pieces/metre Enter the tile dimensions in metres. So for example a 20cm x 20cm. Example: 1÷ 0.2m ÷ 0.2m = 25. If you have 250 pieces of this tile in your bathroom, the area is 10 sqm.
10. calculate what you need before Every successful tiling project starts with good planning. Calculating your tiling area is an important aspect of the process. Done properly it reduces unwanted waste and expense.

APRIL There is much to do in the garden... A FOCUS ON CAMELLIAS The queen of the winter garden is the beautiful camellia. Camellias, with their beautiful blooms in shades of white and pink through to deep crimson and their long flowering season. Their dense and glossy evergreen foliage is also attractive, making the camellia a lovely all-year-round garden plant. Comprising some 100 to 150 different species, these evergreen shrubs originate from Asia, with distribution from northern India across the continent to Japan, and then south to northern Indonesia. In 1794 the first one arrived in England – a double red
camellia – soon to be followed by others. Plant breeders have created a variety of hybrids and cultivars that make ideal garden plants. Most of these derive from three particularly attractive species, namely the autumn flowering Camellia sasanqua, the winter-flowering Camellia japonica and the largeflowered Camellia reticulata, that ends the beauty parade in spring. TIPS FOR CAMELLIAS • Keep their root zones cool through the heat of summer with a thick layer of mulch. • Water them regularly during the flowering season to dramatically reduce the incidence of bud drop. • Dappled shade from mature trees is ideal for most, though some are more sun tolerant than others.

tipsGarden Diary POTTING PLANTS 101 1. Choose the pots - Make certain there are one or more holes in the bottom of your container to allow water to flow out freely. Insufficient drainage can cause roots to drown, and the plant to die prematurely. Almost anything can be used as a container for plants, so what type of pot you choose depends upon your style preference and budget. If you prefer lightweight containers, which are easy to move around, look for resin, fiberglass, and plastic. 2. Choose the potting mix. Do not use soil from the yard or garden. It can be filled with weed seeds, insects, and fungal diseases. Buy potting soil at your local garden centre. It is a loose and light mixture of materials like peat moss, vermiculite, and, often, decomposed organic matter. If you are planting succulents or cacti, use a mix especially formulated for them. To reduce plant maintenance, buy potting mix containing a time-release fertilizer and moisture-retaining polymer crystals. If that type of mix is not available, buy a time-release fertilizer and a jar of water-retaining crystals and follow the package directions for adding to the potting mix. 3. Choose the plants - Make “Right plant, right place” your motto. You must take into consideration the conditions of your space. Don’t try to grow a flower like a rose-which requires six hours of full sun - on a verandah that gets only an hour in the early morning. Do your homework (read books and plant tags), ask for advice at the garden centre, and determine which plants will thrive in the available sun or shade. When deciding what to buy, the simplest approach is to use one kind of plant per pot. If you choose to combine multiple types of plants, make sure they all like the same light and moisture conditions. Don’t put a cactus and a pansy together in one pot and expect them to get along. 4. Prepare the pots. If your containers are large, place them where they’ll ultimately go before filling them. Once they are full and watered, they may be too heavy to move. Put a basket-type coffee filter or a shard of broken pot over the
hole(s) in the bottom of the empty pot. This will prevent the potting mix from washing out but will still allow water to escape. Before pouring in the soil, check its moisture content. Read directions on the bag for wetting it properly. Generally, you need to add water a little at a time and knead the mixture with your hands. A good rule of thumb is to wet the mix until it feels like a damp sponge. Fill the container with the soil. Put in enough potting mix so the base of the plant (where the stem sprouts from the soil’s surface) is about 1 inch from the top of the pot (to help visually estimate, position your plant while it’s still in its nursery container). Before planting, pat down the soil lightly with your fingers to eliminate any big air pockets. Don’t pack it down too hard. 5. Pot the plant. Remove the plant from its nursery container. (It’s a good practice to water plants in their original containers at least an hour before transplanting. This will ease their removal and diminish transplant shock.) Support the top of the “root ball” (the semisolid mass of soil and roots) by placing a finger on each side of the stem; then tip the pot and let the plant fall gently into your hand. Never pull a plant out by its stem. If it is stuck, tap the sides of the pot to loosen it. If the roots are circling around and around, the plant is “root-bound.” Gently tease the ends of the roots free before planting. Set the plant on top of the mix. If you are potting more than one plant, leave at least an inch or so around each root ball so you can add mix in between them. Carefully fill in with small handfuls of soil. Pat gently to eliminate air pockets. Do not pile soil on top of the plant-make sure the stem is completely above the surface. Leave about an inch between the soil surface and the rim of the pot. Water the container. This will settle the roots into their new home. If the soil level drops below the top of the root ball, add additional mix to bring it back up.
Winning Six for automatic garden irrigation
No garden can do without water. In dry periods, watering is a must. In more and more gardens watering has become a fully automated process through the use of a Water Computer in combination with a Rain - and Soil Moisture Sensor. This alone is a major win for plants and a time-saving convenience for gardening enthusiasts. Automatic garden irrigation becomes a real pleasure when the new GARDENA Water Distributor automatic enters the picture. For perfect, automatic garden irrigation, the new GARDENA Water Distributor is a win in another respect. It can be conveniently used to water different garden areas with various plants. One after the other, each area is watered in accordance with its individual requirements: for example, the flower bed is watered with the Micro-Drip-System, the lawn with a sprinkler or sprinkler system, or the vegetable bed with a Drip Irrigation Line. Up to six watering programmes with time-based cycles can be entered for each outlet of the new GARDENA Water Distributor automatic. However, it’s no problem if you choose to activate fewer programmes. Water Distributor outlets that are not required can be easily deactivated with a setting lever. See more at www.hursqvarna.co.za

HEALTH
When travelling it’s easier to get sick, because you are in a new place and your body hasn’t had a chance to adjust to the food, water, or new environment. Travelling can bring you in contact with many things that your body isn’t used to.
Below are some tips to help you start off your holiday feeling great: 1. Stress and excitement can weaken your immune system. Ensure that you get enough sleep to help maintain your strong immune system and combat stress. 2. Jetlag can lead to upset stomach, insomnia and tiredness. If you have travelled back in time try to do some light exercise on arrival to overcome your jetlag. If you are travelling ahead in time, try to stay out of the sun until the second day after arrival. 3. Diarrhoea is a common problem experienced by people travelling. In order to prevent it, ensure that the food that you eat and the water you drink are safe: • The safest foods are those which have been boiled as well as fruit and vegetables that are peeled before eating. • Do not eat undercooked meat or meat that is not cooked prior to serving. • Avoid food that requires a lot of handling before serving. • If unsure whether the drinking water is safe, boil it first. Preferably drink bottled water for the first few days while your body adjusts to its new environment and then start braving the new boiled water. • Avoid ice. • Carry hand sanitizer and wet wipes at all

Staying healthy when going on holiday times. These are ideal for removing germs after being in contact with many people, border posts, and dirty environments. Healthy snack ideas for in the car • Fast food and junk food such as chips, coke, sweets etc are almost always full of bad fats, high in calories and low in nutritional value. They can leave you feeling tired, and bloated. • Try thinly cut vegetables and fruit in ziplock bags or tuppawares such as cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, peas, mango slices etc. • Drink lots of water. It will keep you hydrated and full, and water helps you to stay focussed on the road. • Cut wedges of cheese to eat individually or on crackers. Cheese is a good source of protein and calcium and will help to keep you full. Rye, rice, or whole wheat crackers are high in fibre. • Make yourself healthy sandwiches the night before with any of the following: ham, chicken, beef, cottage cheese, olives, lettuce, avocado, tomato, cheese, etc. If you wrap them individually in cling wrap they maintain their freshness. • Pack small packets of nuts such as pecan, macadamia or almonds. But beware nuts are high in calories so do not pack too many. • A family favourite- biltong. High in protein low in fat. A healthy eating out guide: Breakfast: Never skip breakfast when you are travelling. If you start healthy you are more likely to continue making healthy choices throughout the day. If you have to leave early eat something small and drink lots of water. Avoid sugary foods and caffeinated drinks. Sugary foods give you an energy burst but after a while they make you sleepy. Too much caffeine can leave you feeling bloated. Choose high protein meals for breakfast such as omelette with tomato, poached eggs on toast. If you enjoy cereals for breakfast avoid sugary cereals and choose low GI cereals such as oats, bran flakes, or sugar free mueslis with low fat milk, yoghurt or fruit. Snacks: It is important to keep snacking even when you are on holiday as this will prevent you from pigging out at meal times
HEALTH & NUTRITION by Ceileigh Mckersie
and will prevent you from making unhealthy choices. Good snack choices include: fruit, yoghurt, smoothies, crackers with peanut butter or cottage cheese etc. Lunch: When eating out, order a soup or salad for starters as these are high in nutrients and fill you up quickly to help prevent overeating of higher calorie main meals. If portions are larger than normal take home a doggie bag or share your meal with someone. Make a conscious effort to choose healthy meals and meals that are local to that country. Fill up on the vegetables and avoid salad dressings. If you can’t resist dessert, share it with someone, as often all we need is a taste or two. Dinner: Dinners are often eaten very late when on holiday, and by the time you get to eat you are starving. Be sure to drink a lot of water in the evening as often we are dehydrated from the day’s activities and confuse our thirst for hunger. Use following guidelines when ordering dinner to stay healthy while travelling: 1. Always go low carb in the evening – avoid traditional snack foods, breads, pasta dishes, etc. Stick to lean meats and vegetables when eating especially in the evenings. Dinner should always be lighter than lunch. 2. Take control over your side orders – bread baskets, potato chips, and baked potatoes are common with many restaurant meals. Don’t tempt yourself, just ask your waiter not to bring any. Hold off on sauces such as salad dressings and cream sauces. 3. Know what you are going to eat – before you get to the restaurant, know exactly what you are going to eat to avoid temptation. Choose salads, soups or vegetables, all of which are high in fibre and nutrient rich. 4. Drink lots of water - to wash away any toxins and to keep you hydrated while you travel.

Beauty Notes

EASY BEAUTY TIPS Everyone wants to look their best and as beautiful as they can. Many of us spend a lot of money on branded beauty products and on numerous visits to the beauty salon. There are a number of simple beauty treatments that we can use with things that are easily available in our pantry or fridge! • To remove puffiness from the eyelids, massage a drop of very fresh castor oil on to them. • To cool your eyes, make eye pads using thick slices of cucumber. Another option is to use cotton pads soaked in cold milk. Lie down and place them on your closed eyes and relax for a while. • Putting a drop of rose water into each eye just before you sleep can also refresh your eyes. • To prevent your lips from chapping, apply a mixture of vaseline and honey. Apply this mixture about three times a week.
• To prevent your lips from drying you can use a ground mixture of rose petals and butter. • To delay age spots on your hand, use a piece of lemon and rub all over your hand, before washing. This will delay onset of age-spots. • If you have no time to shampoo your hair before going out, then brush 1 tablespoon of talcum powder or corn flour through your hair. Try this out first when you are not in a hurry to make sure that it works the way you want. • To prevent hair loss you should have a biotin rich drink. Blend bananas with honey, yoghurt and low fat milk. Drink this for a few weeks. • While blow drying and setting your hair, blow-dry hot on the roots of the hair. Roll your hair inwards or outwards at the ends. To improve the setting make sure the ends are evenly rolled in or rolled out. Heat the hair for a second and then let it cool. This process of setting the hair will last longer and make your hair look beautiful. • To add extra shine and glow to your hair add 2 tablespoons of malt vinegar. Use it as a last rinse and towel dry your hair.

Top Things To Do In Harare - April Whoever said our well beloved H-town is boring? There’s a million fun, interesting and exciting things to keep even the most jaded city dwellers entertained. Here are just a few suggestions for things to do in April – but the list is really endless! Check out some of these options and you’ll never be bored again! By Michael Nott
1.
After a hard day at the office stop off at RedBar in Newlands for a drink on your way home. They play great music and have a changing programme that includes live music and comedy nights, spoken word festivals, fashion shows and theatre. Or you can dance the night away on Fridays and Saturdays. Mekka at Sam Levy’s serve the most fabulous cocktails and great food too – especially sushi. Or drop in to Bolero (they have a branch in Newlands and another in Chisipite) have a drink with your friends, order a Spanish style tapas snack, play a game of pool or relax and watch sport on TV.
2.
Dance away your troubles – and get fit at the same time! There’s an extensive range of dance classes on offer, from ballroom dance classes for adult beginners on Tuesday evenings at the Borrowdale Scout Hall, modern Jazz dance classes at the Dance Trust of Zimbabwe (formerly the National Ballet), Capoeira Brazilian dance fitness at the Avondale West Scout Hall on Mondays and Thursdays. Or just for fun take up belly dancing – classes at The Optimum Health Centre 131 Enterprise Road.
3.
Watching sporting events in Harare doesn’t just mean cricket ODI’s, rugby matches or soccer on the TV down at the local pub. Horse riding is a big sport too, whether you’re actively participating or a spectator. Over the long weekend holiday (29th March – 1st April) there’s

the Easter Show at the JR Arena (Glamis) which includes show jumping, dressage and cross country. There’s more jumping and dressage at Chapungu Equestrian Centre in Borrowdale (Honiston Ave.) for the A.R.C. (Amateur Riding Club) on 7th April. On 13th there’s the Hunter Trial at Ruwa Country Club, just outside town. There’s dressage at JR Arena on 21st. On 27th and 28th there’s more dressage – including dressage to music – in a two day event at Chapungu. The Eventing Championships – consisting of all three disciplines, dressage, show jumping and cross country - take place at the Ruwa Country Club on the 28th.
Farm shop, as well as books and gifts. And of course there’s Antique Rose for the best tea and cake and light meals. Best of all it is open on Sundays.
If you’re looking for an adrenalin fix try rock climbing at the Cleveland quarry on Wednesday afternoons from 4.00pm. You can hire climbing gear if you need and there are experienced people on hand to give advice and make sure that you’re safe. And if that’s too tame for you nothing beats the exhilaration of sky diving. The Mashonaland Flying Club meets at Charles Prince Airport on Sunday mornings. There’s on the ground training for first time jumpers on Saturday mornings. No experience is necessary and the cost includes your own take home DVD of your jump. If it’s your first time your harness will be attached to your instructor as you leap out of the plane at around 8,000 feet and experience thirty seconds of exhilarating freefall. Not for the faint hearted! You do need to book in advance. Call Rikki on 0772 605181.
Visit the Harare Museum and the Harare City Library. The small Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences has enough fossils and dioramas to keep most museum buffs happy for an hour or so. The highlights are the archaeological displays and the exhibits of traditional Shona crafts, arts and music. The Library is a bit old and crusty but a recent donation from the Swedish government should help to restore the building and help towards restocking the shelves. Enquire about their special programmes for school kids on Wednesday afternoons. The library is worth a visit just for the architecture. Formerly known as the Queen Victoria Memorial Library, it was designed by Oldfield and Montgomerie and the building design received a Royal Institute of British Architects Award in 1964, the only Zimbabwean building to achieve such recognition.

5.
If gardening is your thing you have to visit Golden Stairs Nursery. They have the best selection of trees, shrubs, flowering plants and seedlings, as well as all the gardening tools and chemicals that you need. While you’re there you can also visit the pet shop which specialises in all things fishy for aquariums and ponds. You can buy the freshest veggies from the Eskbank
6.
For ladies – or men – who feel the need for serious pampering, spoil yourselves or your partner with a treatment at The Skin Spa in Chisipite. You could have a full body massage, a hot stone massage or a Balinese massage. Then spoil yourself with a facial and a luxury pedicure and manicure. You’ll feel and look like a million dollars afterwards. www.skinspazim.com GET YOUR DOSE OF ART, CULTURE AND MUSIC

Take in a bit of culture and visit the National Gallery in the southeast corner of Harare Gardens. Their exhibitions change all the time and they have some programmes for kids during the school holidays. They have a mix of contemporary and traditional European, Zimbabwean and African art, including paintings (you can

If you’re keen on the Zimbabwean art scene don’t miss the Gallery Delta, situated in Robert Paul’s old house in Livingstone Avenue. Or drop into the First Floor Gallery in Mercury House, George Silundika Avenue. Running until 20th of April is a unique dialogue exhibition titled “I am, I was, I could be”, featuring a video installation by a Dutch artist Willemijn de Groot and a multi-media installation by Mavis Tauzeni, one of First Floor Gallery’s up and coming artists. The Social is the new ongoing afternoon programme, which is running from 2pm-6pm every Saturday. From 4pm – 6pm there will be film screenings and discussions.
9.
Reps Theatre in Belgravia Shopping Centre is always abuzz with stage productions, fun social events and training courses for kids, teens and adults to learn more about theatre arts. On the main stage in April from 10th to 13th Repteens (kids in the 13 – 19 year old age group) will be presenting two one act plays. On 19th and 20th is Everything Goes comprising song, dance, comedy and speciality acts. From 4th to 20th April Colder than Here will be on in the Upstairs theatre. Catch the excitement of the best arts festival in Southern Africa. HIFA kicks off on 30th April until 5th May. The Main Stage is in the Harare Gardens and there are shows and performances at other venues around town. One of the main attractions at this year’s festival will be a performance by the world famous Senegalese musician Baaba Maal who has performed with stars such as Paul McCartney and U2’s Bono. HIFA is definitely the highlight of the year for entertainment and for socialising. Don’t be disappointed and book your tickets early.
11.
If live music is your bag the best place to check out is the Book Cafe. They have performances most nights (except Mondays) by top local musicians. Sunday afternoon Jazz sessions are a blast, and they also have film screenings, panel discussions and comedy nights – as well as good food and a well stocked bar. It’s a great venue for people watching as a lot of Harare’s socialites hang out there. Jazz 105 – in Second Street near Eastgate – has excellent live Afro Jazz on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. SHOPPING WITH A DIFFERENCE
12.
A number of farmers markets have sprung up recently in Harare where you can buy organic vegetables, free range eggs, homemade biscuits and cakes, pickles and preserves and much more. Arundel Village Shopping Centre has a market on the first Saturday of every month. Brookfields, 177 Enterprise Road, has a food market on the second Saturday of every month. There’s a morning market at Mojo’s, 10 East Road, Belgravia and Upmarket (12 Maasdorp Ave) have their farmers’ produce market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Doon Estate has a food, wine and book fair on the last Saturday of every

month. Villa Musika at 38 McLaughlin Ave in Kensington is open Monday to Saturday from 9 to 4 for a selection of herbs, vegetables and delicious healthy treats, like handmade pasta and breads.
13.
If you’re tired of the shopping malls but still need to get your shot of retail therapy try the flea markets. You’ll be amazed what you can find and most of the prices are very much negotiable. The oldest flea market in Harare is undoubtedly Mbare Musika situated in the centre of town near the old cemetery, the main bus terminus and Rufaro stadium. You’ll find everything here, from clothing to sculptures, from musical instruments to vegetables, herbs and traditional muti. It can be a bit chaotic and crowded, so take a friend with you to watch your bags. Avondale flea market, just behind the formal shopping complex, is a little less frenetic but also has a huge range of goods for sale from electrical goods to furniture, loads of clothing both new and second hand and a number of second hand book stalls with books you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The market is open every day. The flea market at Sam Levy’s on Sundays is probably the most similar to the street markets you’d find in most European cities. There are loads of clothes, CDs and DVDs, books and curios for sale and there are a number of cafes and restaurants close by to refresh you after a busy morning shopping.
14.
Warning: Auctions can be addictive! But they are a lot of fun and you’ll find some weird and wonderful items on sale that you won’t see anywhere else. Hammer and Tongues have their regular sale of office furniture on Wednesdays, household goods on Thursday mornings and their car sales on Thursday evenings. ABC Auctions have household sales on Mondays, yard sales on Tuesdays and car sales on Fridays. TWA Auctions in Milton Park have a view-

Just be careful not to get carried away and out bid yourself or you’ll end up spending more than you bargained for and taking home items you don’t really want! ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS - as the whole of April is holiday time.
15.
Don’t neglect the little ones and take them out for some excitement at the newly opened Fun Factory on Harare Drive. There’s lots of fun outside on the inflatables, jungle gyms and train rides, and inside there’s computer games, imaginative play areas and ball pools. During the mornings it’s a pre-school but it’s open to the public in the afternoons and on the weekends. A coffee shop will be open soon on site so parents can relax while the kids play. 44 Harare Drive, 886794 or 0773 237766 (Claudine).

For some excitement for the young at heart – kids and adults – why not try your hand at Paintball. It’s great fun, good exercise and an excellent way to work out your stress and frustrations. You can play paintball at a number of places around town – Sherwood Golf Club, Kingfisher Park (behind Golden Stairs Nursery) or at One67 Enterprise Road. You can play games most days but you need to book in advance. Contact djsadrenalin@yahoo.com or zimpaintball@gmail.com. It’s better if you go with a group of family and friends.
17.
If you are looking for something exciting to do over the Easter Holidays come and join in the fun at the Harare BMX Club (opposite The Groombridge Spar) on The Chase. There will be a BMX Clinic running over the school holidays which will teach your child, and/or yourself,
bike skills and how to have fun on your bike. All you need is a roadworthy bike (it doesn’t have to be a BMX bike), long sleeved top, long trousers, a helmet and takkies. If you don’t have a helmet you can get one at the track. Dates: Easter Holidays 28th March to the 3rd May Times: Sunday Tuesday and Friday 1.00pm up to 4.00pm. Monday Wednesday and Thursday 9.00am up to 12.00pm. Cost: $10 for the first 2 hours and $5 per hour thereafter. Confirm your booking with Coach Andrew 0773 289077

Sunday afternoons can be a real hoot for younger kids (and adults too). Model trains operate on the last Sunday of every month form 2.30pm onwards at Glenara Avenue, opposite Runiville shops. It’s great fun for the kids and the spectacle of grown men riding around on toy trains never ceases to amuse. Yes, it’s silly but it’s enormously entertaining. JUST CHILLING
19.
Sit back, relax and enjoy watching a movie. After a long break the cinemas at Eastgate and Westgate have been refurbished with the newest state-of -the-art equipment. Quite a few of their films are shown in 3D which is a cool way to see a film – the action is all around you. The Book Cafe in their new premises in Samora Machel Avenue (next to the Holiday Inn) have film screenings on Wednesday nights, showing feature films and documentaries that you won’t find anywhere else. CINEMALLIANCE at Alliance Francaise screen French films with English subtitles on Tuesday evenings at 6.00 pm. The Italian Cultural Society, the Dante Alighieri, shows Italian films with English subtitles at the Italian Club on the first Tuesday of every month. The films start at 6.30 pm and admission is free.

Visit the National Botanical Gardens. Although it’s been a bit neglected over the last few years it’s looking beautiful now after the rains. It comprises 58 acres near the centre of town that contains examples of indigenous and exotic flora that thrive in our climate. It’s a great place to spend the day outdoors in the fresh air – you can walk your dog, kids can play ball games and run around safely and you can get some healthy exercise. Pack a picnic basket to enjoy under the trees or have a light meal in the restaurant. Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority have their offices there, so you can find information and make bookings for their cottages and campsites around the country. Societies such as the Aloe and Cactus Society and the Tree Society have regular meetings here. The Tree Society is organising three outings in April. Tuesday, April 2nd at the National Botanical Gardens at 5 pm. Sunday, April 21st at a venue to be finalised at 9:30 am. Saturday, April 27th at a venue to be finalised at 2.30 pm. Anyone interested in attending should phone either Richard Oulton (870540) or Isla Grundy (0779 530463) for further details.

It’s not even officially released, but let me be the first critic to say; “JT, why did you go solo? To get a new sound away from your boy band?” With this album you would think 90’s Pop sensation, N’sync, was back. What happened in the last 7 years when JT released his last album. iTunes marketing department says the new single is a “stinging jab” yes it is, but not in the same context iTunes states. It stings your ears. At the price of $16.99 it is too expensive. I would suggest only buying this album when it’s at a reduced price and only if you are a music collector and need it to complete your collection. Download- Mirrors (because I feel compelled to put one)/ Ditch – The rest.
It’s hard not to love the Lighthouse Family, so therefore it would be hard to not want to get this album by their front man Tunde Baiyewu. There is not much difference in Music style and effect between this solo album and the Band as a wholes album. None theless his lyrical skills are great as are his vocal skills. It’s what one would expect from lighthouse, no deviations in what they do so it can be a bit monotonous. But then they say “if something’s are not broken don’t fix them...”

DIDo - THE GIRL WHO GOT AWAY ($16.99 iTunes) *** I was waiting for this album with bated breath, expecting to be wowed. Dido has had a different take on electronic pop with her music. It’s got a big alternative influence. This album was everything I expected it to be. Dido has out done herself and Wowed the world once again. This album is superb; a definite must for every iPod. ZAMBEZIA ***
THE MASTER ***
This one just had to be included! An all star cast and set in a bustling bird city on the edge of the majestic Victoria Falls, Zambezia (or Adventures in Zambezia) is the story of Kai - a naïve, but high-spirited young falcon who travels to the bird city of Zambezia where he discovers the truth about his origins and, in defending the city, learns how to be part of a community. Once there, he applies to join the Hurricanes, an elite troupe of raptors who look after Zambezia’s security. His resourcefulness and speed will come in handy, because the carrion eating Marabus have joined forces with a giant lizard to disturb the peace of this avian paradise. But it will take more than just the Hurricanes to ward off this danger - the whole bird community will have to stick together. A great movie for the school holidays.
BOOKS
ZERO DARK THIRTY *** Zero Dark Thirty is a 2012 American historical drama film directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal. Billed as “the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man”, the film is a dramatization of the United States operation that found and killed Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda. It has also generated controversy, both for graphic portrayal of torture of suspects and for what is described by some as a misleading portrayal of torture as critical to the United States’ success in gaining information on bin Laden’s associates and location. A good one to buy and keep. It stars Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, and Édgar Ramírez.

ASSEGAI
A man wakes up to find himself lying on the ground in a railway station, his mind stripped bare of all recollection. Convinced he is a drunken down and out, it isn’t until a newspaper report about a satellite launch catches his eye that he suspects all is not what it seems… The year is 1958, and America is about to launch its first satellite in a desperate attempt to match the Soviet Sputnik and regain the lead in the space race. And as he relearns the story of his life, he uncovers long-kept secrets about his wife, his best friend and the woman he once loved more than life itself…
Assegai is Wilbur Smith’s thirty second novel, it follows The Triumph of the Sun in which the author brought the Courtney and Ballantyne series together. Assegai tells the story of Leon Courtney (son the Ryder Courtney) and is set in 1906 in Kenya. The events in the story are linked to and precede the outbreak of World War One. After a fallout with his father, Leon Courtney leaves home and joins the army. His contacts in the local population, specially the Masai tribe with whom he forges a strong bond, make him adept at espionage.

The Master is a 2012 American drama film written, directed, and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. It tells the story of Freddie Quell (Phoenix), a World War II veteran struggling to adjust to a post-war society who meets Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman), a leader of a religious movement known as “The Cause” who sees something in Quell and accepts him into the movement. Freddie takes a liking to “The Cause” and begins traveling with Dodd along the East Coast to spread the teachings. This is not a feel-good movie. But it is a master class in acting. It is a haunting fictional story that is all too true.

DAYS OF GRACE Nora was a girl of twelve when the war broke out and she was forced to join the train-loads of evacuees leaving London’s East End for rural Kent. Her surrogate family, the Rivers family, are unlike anyone she has met before and she soon comes to love her new life with them, and in particular with twelve-year-old Grace. Over the next few years, as the dogfights rage ever more fiercely over head and it becomes clear that the Rivers’ marriage contains deep and irreparable cracks, Nora and Grace grow as close as sisters - though, to Nora’s confusion, even this is not quite as close as she would like. ** $6 www.bushbin.com
