Light’s House Foundation Nepal
FOREWORD Since 2008, Light House Foundation Nepal (LHFN) has been working especially in MidWestern and Far-Western regions of Nepal among the deprived children and communities. LHFN has been implementing various projects and programs like education, accommodation, livelihood, medication that enables holistic development and training to fulfill the vision of building a healthy, prosperous society where every individual is able to enjoy their basic fundamental rights. LHFN, a non-governmental organization has been working for the advancement of economically and socially marginalized children and women as well as in the ostracized community like the Badi and Chepang tribe from its inception. It aims to uplift the social standards and cultivate self-dignity for such groups as these. The year of 2015-2016 was a big leap forward for LHFN as we expanded our program in Hetauda among the Chepang tribes. A hostel was established for "Chepang" children who never even thought of being able to grow up with such good facilities and to be given an education. Land was purchased for the childrena and drinking water amenities were built in the village as well as in the hostel. Big water tanks were installed that could hold 10,000 liters. In Kathmandu, upgrading the infrastructures of every hostel and administration was also done throughout the year. New transport vehicles were acquired in order to facilitate the work and also for the children who had joined the college. 2015 was a turbulent year with many challenges like economic degradation, earthquakes, IV

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 blockades, emotional hurt and many other struggles for the whole nation. The support of our children, helpers as well as the dedication of our staff during these tough times helped us to sustain and rise above the difficulties. Regardless of the challenges with more than 600 children and staff in the crucial condition, the goal to help the victims has remained as our firm mission. We not only could sustain but also could administer relief including food, tents, medical treatment and labour to the earthquake victims to help with securing their homes. Despite the catastrophe, the focus of LHFN is to empower the children; so we visited various nations such as Sweden, Australia, USA and Japan which were all successful. The children also had excursions to different parts of renowned places in Kathmandu. With the objective of providing excellent education, LHFN sent some more children under our scholarship scheme to one of the top American universities in Indonesia in order to pursue their higher degree education. LHFN was also able to provide a safe haven for 55 vulnerable children from India. They are now grounded within our program and are progressing well. Frequent Government investigation by the District Child Welfare Association also added another challenge during this traumatic year. We are thankful for our government for showing their interest in our organization. We see their investigation as an opportunity to learn and raise LHFN's standard to the mark the government has set up for all NGO’s. We take this as our learning phase, a stepping-stone, for our future partnership success with the government. . On behalf of LHFN, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all the individuals, friends, community people, government, agencies, all stakeholders and donors for their outstanding support and standing with us in this important work. I sincerely believe that this annual report will be useful to delineate the major accomplishments of LHFN of 2015 and contribute to gain more understanding about LHFN. Thank you. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Annual Report of 2015-2016 is the summary presenting the project activities carried by Light’s House Foundation Nepal (LHFN) during the 2016 financial year. Our work with the deprived and discriminated communities within Nepal, especially with children, is to develop a whole new concept of humanity in our society. Nepal was hit by a devastating earthquake on 25thApril, 2015 that killed approximately 9,000 people, left thousands injured while scores of buildings including cultural and heritage sites and health facilities were severely damaged. Taking initiative to create a relief program in villages where many of our children are from; Lighthouse Foundation Nepal was able to provide tents, food, counseling and many other relief projects to the earthquake victims. This work is still being carried out in the majorly affected areas including Sankhu, Nuwakot, Gorkha, Bhaktapur and Sindhupalchowk. At present, there are over 600 children in our care. Lighthouse Foundation was able to rescue 55 children from India from a vulnerable situation in India. Many children have received opportunities that were never deemed possible for someone from a low caste. They have received international scholarships, been on international tours, and traveled to many landmarks within Nepal. They are receiving an education without discrimination, taught that they can make their dreams their reality and supported every step in their journey.
VIII
Mistakes are the growing pains of wisdom.’
ANNUAL REPORT 2015
The work of LHFN in 2015-2016 was the continuity of efforts in bringing positive changes in the lives of children and communities. LHFN could not have done any of the above without the constant support of the donors, sponsors and friends. We are forever thankful to you for making this possible.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015
ABOUT US Introduction
If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs.’
Light’s House Foundation Nepal (LHFN) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization which aims in the advancement of the lives of destitute and socially excluded children and to enhance the livelihood of the children who are at the jeopardy of sexual abuse or human trafficking. LHFN focuses in providing proper accommodation and education, hence, making the orphans, street-children and abandoned infants pro-active and esteemed members of the community. We have been providing housing to around 600 children from the fiscally and socially backward families, especially from the Dalit and Badi community of the western region of Nepal along with the children recommended by the Government authorities and our aim is the reduction of the prevalence of discrimination and encourage equality for all regardless of caste, gender or social economic status. 2015-16 was an audacious year for LHFN indeed as we extended Earthquake relief programs in the major areas of Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Sankhu, Gorkha and Bhaktapur and took on about 65 children who had lost their families and home in the devastating earthquake. Light’s House Foundation Nepal (LHFN) was registered on 11 th October, 2009 under the Organization registration Act 2034 Nepal, Article 4 at the district administration office Kathmandu (Registration No. 414).
11
Light’s House Foundation Nepal
Vision To see that all vulnerable, povertystricken, oppressed and socially excluded children are given the opportunity to grow up in a safe and caring environment in which they are nurtured, educated, encouraged, respected and loved.
Mission To improve the livelihood and wellbeing of all Nepali children whom are at risk of trafficking, abuse and neglect by providing holistic care including accommodation, education, nutrition, health care and a supportive and secure environment for emotional and physical development. These children whom are deemed at risk include orphans, abandoned babies, ‘street children’ and children of families who are living in extreme poverty whereby the children cannot go to school and often do not even receive two meals per day.
Organizational Goals To ensure Nepali children become educated, pro-active and valued members of the community. To reduce the prevalence of discrimination and encourage equality for all regardless of caste, gender or social economic status.
12
To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Strategic Objectives
Core Values
Create an opportunity and make access to the holistic development through quality education and required training to the children of the impoverished, disadvantaged, orphans, war victims and marginalized rural communities.
Who we serve ?
Reaching out to underprivileged, ostracized, and victimized communities due to natural disasters, through running health programs, providing medication, support and training for empowerment.
Impoverished, marginalized children to give holistic development. New born throw away babies who are born through circumstances such as rape and from parents who can't raise their own children due to poverty. Deprived communities like Chepang, Badi, and also victims of natural disasters
Creating opportunities to the children who are unable to come to our hostel as home base support for their education.
Communities in need of a clean drinking water supply, health facilities, labor help, WASH training.
Creating opportunities to train children who are 18 years and above who would like to study further for their self empowerment.
The community of Light House Foundation is here for every child in need. While in the past, the focus was mainly on the Badi community due to the oppression, prejudice and the risk of being trafficked faced by the children on a daily basis. However, the extreme poverty of most villages, apart from the Badi people, has lead to thousands of children do not have the opportunity to receive an education, food for every meal and working full time from a young age. Therefore, the community has expanded and Lighthouse Foundation has grown at the phenomenal rate, raising and educating children from some of the poorest and most discriminated villages of Nepal. 13

ANNUAL REPORT 2015
OUR PROJECTS Light House Foundation has completed numerous projects over the past year and has a number of current ones underway.
Objectives Provide holistic education to impoverished and ostracized community's especially the children. To help enable public schools and colleges to deliver quality education to the hostel children. Provide the children training, tutors, support and giving extra opportunities and a sound environment for the children to learn.
Indonesian Students
Two years ago, 4 Lighthouse children were accepted into ITC in Jakarta, Indonesia on scholarship. While the study is difficult, it has encouraged them to push themselves, study harder and start to realize their potential. August 2015, another two children achieved excellent results and passed their IELTS exams that allowed them to earn a scholarship to the same college. They have been thoroughly enjoying the study and making full use of all the facilities the college has to offer, including a swimming pool and an athletics field. They are dedicated to their study and appreciate the opportunity that has been given to them.
Education (USA)
Key Achievements Passed SLC
Ten children were able to complete their SLC with good grades this year and have been admitted to different colleges according to their own interest and goals.
Passed +2
Six children were able to pass their +2 with good grades and have joined their graduate levels to different colleges in their own interest.
Acsa Dayal was sponsored to get to America for her further education in a nursing faculty. On seeing her interest and hard work in 15

her education we tried to get the sponsorship abroad for a nursing faculty and she was able to grab the opportunity and this has been a major educational achievement and a good example for the children of our organization too.
55 Graduated
According to the government rules we had to say goodbye to 55 children who were above 18 years even though it was very hard for us as they had spent a number of years together as a family. They were sent to their own families, community/ guardians so that they would learn and reintegrate back into their own society, traditions and cultures. However, they are still being followed up to assure their safety and support in their development according to their individual interest.
Sangeeta Badi
Championship organized by the Nepal Athletes Association on the 28th of May 2016. Sangeeta Badi took first prize in Cross Country Championship of junior girls' team. The event had more than 250 participants, international, national and even some professional athletes. This is the first time our hostel's girl has participated in a national competition. We sent a team of twenty nine students who all participated with great success. We endeavor to take these opportunities so that this would help to build up their confidence level.
55 children arrived from India
55 Children who were vulnerable to prostitution, from deprived communities in India were brought to our homes through the consent of their parents during 2015 to give them a good upbringing and future. They are now safe and well at no risk in our hostel and are getting a good education in school.
Computer Lab
We take great pride in congratulating Ms. Sangeeta Badi who participated in the 4th National Open Cross Country 16
While studying from books is important, the huge variety of information that is readily available on the internet cannot be ignored. Exposing children to different ideas and concepts from other countries teaches them how to critically think and analyze different circumstances and situations they will come across in day-to-day life. They will appreciate the unique opportunity that has been provided to them. To live life with no fear, knowing
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 food will be served three times a day and to receive an education. Furthermore, computer skills are essential in almost every job. Therefore, in every hostel, multiple computers have been set up and in one hostel an entire lab, has been installed.
Organic Farm Training
Organic Farm training was also held in 2015 where 55 boys were trained to do different works such as irrigating, planting and harvesting of crops during their vacation time. The trained boys were over the age of 14.
Training
Two months training was given to two of our children from Kathmandu Hostel, Ms. Devisarah Badi and Krisha Badi including one staff Mr. Hari Badi at Delhi in Delhi Catalyst so that they would be able to handle the rescue project in different parts of Nepal and India. Similarly, 3 other staffs including 2 girls were also sent to the same training as the training seemed to be fruitful and effective for the work that we are doing among the kids specially in the field of counseling and administration.
Press Meet
The events of the press meet on the 20th December lead to an historical moment for Lighthouse Foundation. Upon the arrival of renowned Swedish singer and songwriter Carola Haggsvist, who has recently held concerts across Sweden to raise funds; a media conference was organized where many of the leading media outlets attended. This press meet has allowed the whole nation to hear for the first time and learn about the work of Lighthouse Foundation through some of the leading newspapers, including Republica and The Himalayan Times. Three girls; Pabitra, Hanna and Krisha shared their experiences and explained how Lighthouse Foundation has accepted and transformed their lives when their own community abandoned them. They described how they now have hope for their future and share about different opportunities they have received that previously they could not even dream about.
Tours
Every year, multiple children from the Foundation are offered the opportunity to travel abroad and share their testimonies. These opportunities are a once-in-alifetime event for the children. The tours not only allow Lighthouse to spread awareness of Nepal and its work but also to showcase to the world the unique culture, traditions and customs of the Nepali people.

show off their newfound skills. It was a huge success. Hundreds of women lined up to receive manicures and pedicures from our girls. It was an enriching experience that gave the girls pride in the skills they had learnt. In addition to their very successful beauty session; the entire team was able to see snow for the first time ever and go horse riding. Both of these activities were life dreams. The entire trip was an incredible experience and life changing for the girls.
Australia
Hanna, Pabitra and Chandrakala visited numerous American states including California, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa and Colorado where they shared their testimonies and the work that Lighthouse Foundation is doing in Nepal. They attended countless meetings and multiple Gala Dinner nights. It was a fantastic immersion experience for the girls as they were able to see and be involved in a very different culture from their own.
Sweden
It was a 23-day trip of a lifetime for 17 of our Lighthouse Foundation girls. They were able to meet their sponsors who have supported them since their arrival into the hostels. All of the girls had been doing vocational training and in Sweden they received an opportunity to 18

wet children, tie-dyed clothes and a huge mess. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves and cannot wait for next years’ festival.
Festivals
Festivals are of great importance in the Nepali culture; therefore Lighthouse Foundation organizes programs and events for the children to be able to participate and celebrate within them.
Teej
In August 2015, a three-hour program was held in Mulpani. Government officials were invited and some of the children preformed traditional dances and amusing skits. Lunch was provided and a huge dance party consisting of over 700 children commenced. They all showed off their dance moves, singing ability and were loudly cheered on. It was an afternoon full of laughter, smiles and intense dancing.
Holi
The water and colour festival. Each hostel filled up hundreds of water balloons and had multiple buckets full of coloured powder. Then began the biggest water and colour fight. Once the balloons finished, buckets were filled and simply poured onto each other. The colours created a vibrant and interesting mist in the air. The fight resulted in colourful and incredibly

Christmas/ Dashain & Tihar
Similarly we were able to celebrate Christmas as well as Dashian & Tihar festivals with the children of our hostels so that they would have the knowledge of our culture and traditions accordingly. They were bought new dresses, shoes and gifts were also provided with different fulfilled programs which our children enjoyed the most. And we also provided the transport fares to the children who were interested to visit their parents in their festive vacation this year.
Annual Program 2016
We celebrated another year of success and achievement for LHFN, on 6th Children’s Annual Day which was held at the Nepal Academy Hall on the 31st December, 2015. More than 1000 people gathered including all our children for the grand celebration. This included parliamentary & government dignitaries along with national and international media personalities and was presided by our chief guest, the Peace & Reconstruction Minister, Mr. EknathDhakal. We were given a letter of appreciation by our honorable late Prime Minister of Nepal Mr. K.P Sharma Oli at the program.
Health, Hygienes and Livelihood
Health check ups were done this year, like every year according to the agreement done with a doctor for the health of the children. 20
Medication, major and minor operations, necessary treatments including accidental cases of children with more than 300 being done this year successfully. Some major operations included a back bone operation of Esther Badi at Hostel 1&3 and appendicitis etc.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Water Projects Hetuada
Our hostel, in Hetuada, located in the south of Nepal, has recently received a new water filter that will provide clean drinking water for over 500 individuals. In March, a team from Australia from Bentham Foundation installed a state of the art filtration system and preformed a WASH education system to the hostel children and the local school teaching about the importance of hygiene and how to achieve it. The water filter was a much-needed addition to the Hetuada hostel.
Lantrines Hetuada
After a government inspection at Hetuada Hostel, Lighthouse Foundation was informed that as the hostel hosts both males and females, two separate bathroom blocks needed to be constructed. Therefore, in partnership with Bentham Foundation another latrine block for the females is underway. Three toilets and three vanities will be built to accommodate the girls. This expansion was needed as the hostel has 58 children and many girls are above 8 years old. Girls need to have their own privacy.
Rooms Partitioned
To have separate rooms for the boys at Hetauda hostel we kept aluminum partition to the hall which were able to form adequate rooms for them.
Hostel Village
Lighthouse Foundation, in partnership with Love Nepal, has purchased a (20 ropanies and 3 anas) three-acre plot of land in Sankhu where the construction for new hostel buildings will take place. Our vision is to see that the majority of the hostels will relocate to this land and create a village community. An environment will be created to ensure that the children feel safe, secure and loved but also challenges them to continue to better themselves and dream big futures for themselves, along with their families and their villages. It is a magnificent opportunity to create a culture of comradeship, togetherness, love and of course fun. The plans for the village are still underway, however the village is expected to consist of 8 buildings where six of the girls’ hostels will move into in a earthquake resistant, child friendly and disable friendly environment. It is our hope to be able to facilitate the complex with a swimming pool and sporting field. Since the majority of Nepalese do not know how to swim, it will be the good skill to learn. Furthermore, providing a space where the children can enjoy being children and have fun is vital to the Light house Foundation program and a child’s development. Before the children become adults, they need to have the opportunity to be children. Sankhu is located outside of Kathmandu city in open land. The 21
Light’s House Foundation Nepal
air is fresher and cleaner and the surroundings are mostly paddocks. Growing up in an unpolluted environment will greatly benefit all of the children.
Hetuada Complex
In partnership with Bentham Foundation, our vision is to create a self-sufficient complex that will be able to accommodation 500 Chepang children in 32743.82 square feet (9 kattha) land. This complex will include a poultry farm, vegetable farm and a septic system that will be used to fertilize the farm and an athletics field. There are many ideas and it is exciting to see them come slowly to fruition. The ground leveling work has already begun.
Organic Farm
In 2016, three crops of potatoes have been harvested, which were distributed amongst all ten hostels. All the children were able to taste the first batch of vegetables grown by Lighthouse Foundation. It was rewarding to see them enjoying the fruit’s of our farmer, Bikram’slabour. Tomatoes, lady fingers, beans, spinach, lettuce, ginger and peas have also been grown. Currently, corn crops are growing. As two of the boys’ hostels are living on the farm, they are also helping Bikram with the farm work. Many of them have struggled to adjust to the routine of school and homework after never having 22
attended before, therefore having the farm to play and work makes transitioning easier. While it may have taken a few years to start, the farm’s first year’s produce is very encouraging of what is to come.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Built walls
According to the government rules we constructed walls in the hostels of Surkhet and Hetauda for the safety of the children so that no trespassers or animals can easily enter the premises of the hostel which may cause trouble for the children.

HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE Water Tank
A water tank was also installed at Chitwan with the capacity of 5000 litres as a community welfare project becouse the people were in need of a clean drinking water system in the village. Today, they are satisfied with what the LHFN has done for their drinking facility.
Chitwan Community were given two tanks Medical Aids and Hygine trainings like "WASH" were also taught to different villagers like Surkhet, Hetauda etc where more than 500 villagers received the benefit of it.
Flood /Earthquake Relief
Our response to flood victims and earthquake victims of 2015, a heartbreaking situation was to reach out to different parts of Nepal with relief projects. Clothes, food, tents, water, corrugated iron sheets and medicine comprise some of the things that are being distributed to the victims. We distributed these relief funds in different places including Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchok, Ramechhap and Dolakha: the major earthquake effected regions as per the capacity of our LHFN team.

BAGMATI SARSAFAAI
The children of LHFN actively took part in the Bagmati Sanitation Campaign. Bagmati is believed to be one of the holy rivers of Kathmandu which is originated from Shivapuri Hills having its outlet at Chobar. Few sections of the river in inside the Valley have been totally cleaned. It was a huge pride for LHFN to be attending the campaign and clearing the trash and waste from the river bank.
Annual General Meeting
During the October Annual General Meeting, four new members were added to the board; Krisha Badi, Devisara (Hanna) Badi, Hikmat Badi and Hari Badi. As they are all from the Badi community they will be able to provide a real insight of life growing up in a Badi village and 25

We have been inspecting, more than 600 children homes in Nepal and doing our responsibility of giving license as well as closing many firms who couldn’t fulfill the criteria the government has assigned for the children homes of Nepal. But we are thankful that this foundation has been able to procure some extra criteria as compared to our own government homes and has been listed among the top 100 homes all over Nepal.

SUCCESS STORY OF KRISHA BADI SPONSORED STUDENT OF LHFN Krisha is a 23 year old woman who is moving boldly towards her goal in working in media and becoming a journalist. Her passion is made quite evident when she speaks in front of other people. She recently spoke in front of hundreds of people at the 6th Annual Children’s Day of LHFN, and her speech caused the whole audience to listen in awe. Her seven years with LHFN has brought a dramatic change not only to her but also to her whole family which to her is a dream come true. She is horrified when she thinks back at her past life on the river bank, living in a dark small hut with hardly enough food to eat and clothes to wear, and she recalls how hard it was to feed the hungry siblings. But today it is the suffering of those past years that spurs her on in becoming a journalist so that she will be able to fight for a brighter future, not only for her but for the whole Badi community.

I have been a student and grew up in one of the children’s homes, myself; now I am a house parent. I love this work for so many reasons, one of which is that I know the thoughts and feelings of these children, because I once was one of them.‘
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Success story of Arjun Success story of Susan Badi sponsored student of Badi sponsored student of LHFN LHFN
When I was living in my village, I had very little sense of future and purpose. Four years ago, I got an opportunity to come to Kathmandu to continue my studies. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to create a new beginning. I wanted to go back to my village because it was easier. With the support and love of the staff, I am the first Badi to start a university degree overseas. My dream is to become a teacher and work among marginalized children. I still have struggles in my life, but one thing I know for certain is that all the hardships we face teach us who we really are.
I was born in a very rural area in the northwest of Nepal, where my people, called Badi, still face severe discrimination. I used to follow my friends to school; however, when their classes started, I had to stay outside class and listen through the window because I was unable to pay the school fees. Whenever the teachers would see me they would kick me out of the school grounds. When Light’s House Foundation gave me an opportunity to move to a children’s home in Kathmandu and be sponsored to study, it was a dream come true. I now feel I have a bright future. I want to become a journalist, write about my tribe, and change the concept that people have about the Badi community. I want to let people know that we are also humans and we have our own dignity and dreams. 45

Success story of Sita Badi sponsored student of LHFN
Success story of Hanna Badi sponsored student of LHFN
Sita is a beautiful young lady who entered the hostel five years ago in a depressed condition thinking that her life was nothing but a meaningless ritual. Sita is from a very poor family background and her father was mentally ill and he also was a heart patient which was very upsetting for her. The concept of going to school was but a dream until she came to the home of LHFN. She is totally overwhelmed by this golden opportunity that has been given to her and her younger brother and sister, who are also being educated too. Sita is a responsible young girl who is always thinking about the well being of her family. Her future goal is to become a social worker but in the meantime she enjoys looking after and helping the younger children in their daily school work at her hostel.
Hanna was brought up in an under privileged, poor and ostracized family, with pain and heartache being a daily occurrence in her life. The girls of her community continually had to live in fear due to the lustful desires and harassment of the men. Hanna was deceived into accepting her fate with no where to go for help, until she was introduced to LHFN when she was only thirteen years old. She has now been with LHFN for the last eight years, and with a happy smiling face describes those years as her best. Hanna is now proud of being a woman when before she thought it was a curse, and she is also excited about what the future now holds for her. Her dream is to become a social worker so that she can help other destitute women in her own community.
