Adapting to changing times Promoting Bradford’s food & drink scene in unprecedented times. Like so many businesses in the food & drink sector, Covid-19 came as a huge blow to us at Eat Drink Guides. What was meant to be a year of growth became one of uncertainty and worry. With restaurants, cafés and bars in survival mode and the nation in lockdown we had no choice but to postpone all our guides indefinitely. But as lockdown set in we became inspired and encouraged by the inventiveness and positivity shown by many food and drink businesses. Restaurants adapted their menus to offer take out services, bars and bakeries quickly transformed into pop up shops while many who were unable to stay open took the opportunity to reflect and plan for the future. In April we decided to launch a oneoff digital magazine to celebrate this. Scran magazine featured over 50 food and drink businesses with news, interviews, features and recipes.

We saw it as an opportunity to provide free publicity for food and drink businesses at a time when many have been forced to slash their marketing budgets and were in need of support more than ever. The magazine was read by 1000s online and ranks among the best things we’ve ever produced. The feedback we received was excellent and as a result we’ve committed to doing more issues in the future. Scran will compliment our Eat Drink Guides with themed issues published biannually and be available both in print and online. As spring turned to summer, lockdown was lifted and venues began to open again. Once more we saw businesses adapt brilliantly to the new rules and the success of August’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme helped to bring a real positivity back to the industry. We made the call to push ahead with our 2020 guide, feeling it was a good time to encourage people to continue supporting local food & drink businesses.

Working with our partners at Bradford BID, we put plans in place for the first ever Eat Drink Bradford Restaurant Week, which was set to take place in October. We also agreed a deal to increase the distribution by an extra 5,000 copies and set up a postal order service.

We decided to press ahead with the guide and postpone the Restaurant Week to March 2021.

But as autumn set in cases began to rise again, the industry was hit with restrictions and more uncertainty and once again our plans were up in the air.

We are incredibly thankful to the businesses who recognised the value of the guide and have supported it in such difficult circumstances this year. Although this year’s guide is a little thinner than previous editions, we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved and determined to make sure all our featured venues feel the benefit.

Some difficult discussions followed but we were determined to keep the series going and felt it was more important than ever to promote the food and drink scene in Bradford.

We hope the guide will inspire you to support these businesses and help ensure our food & drink scene is still in good health when we emerge from the pandemic.

“There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” Bradford may well be renowned as the UK’s Capital of Curry (and rightly so!) but that richly-earned title hides a huge diversity of culinary talent and invention. The city is home to a mouth-watering range of places to eat and drink, each with their own unique style and – sometimes quirky – take on a vast selection of delectable meals. Artisan Italian food? Check. Sensational and eccentric cakes? Got it. Bistro delights? Yup. Deli-style cured meats? Oh, yes. Caribbeanthemed dishes? Absolutely. Handbaked breads? Of course. Vegetarian and vegan treats? Naturally. Serious coffee? And some! French patisseries? Mais oui. Local delicacies? Need you ask? An astonishing array of real ale and craft beers? Indubitably! We could go on. And on…

Suffice it to say, there are edible pleasures here to suit every taste. All you have to do is follow your nose. Like all towns and cities across the country, Bradford has suffered at the hands of the Covid-19 pandemic but the district’s food and drink businesses have been fighting back and finding new ways to entice in customers while doing everything in their power to ensure they receive a safe and enjoyable experience. The Bradford Business Improvement District (BID) was set up by local businesses to invest in improving the city centre for all, helping to ensure it is clean, safe, full of vitality and promoted locally, regionally and nationally. During the lockdown we have worked hard to support local businesses and our Getting Bradford Back to Business campaign was launched to ensure local shops and hostelries were

getting all the help they could to get back on their feet. Sponsoring this Eat Drink guide to spread the word about just what a great foodie experience Bradford has to offer is part of that campaign. And in March we are taking it one step further by teaming up with Eat Drink’s publishers to launch the city’s first ever Restaurant Week. The aim is follow on from the good work achieved by the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme in getting people back into the city centre and its restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars by highlighting the fantastic variety available and showcasing a range of offers and discounts which the venues themselves will be providing. George Bernard Shaw once wrote: “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.”

Well, if you love food, especially eating out, there is no better time to try a taste of Bradford’s fine selection of venues than during Restaurant Week. You won’t be disappointed Bon appétit! Ian Ward Chair, Bradford Business Improvement District (BID)

A Saturday trip to Bradford Hazel Slow explores the vibrant and varied food and drink options available in Bradford city centre.

Next time you are deciding where to do your weekly shop, have a think about what you can do to support your local economy. Bradford’s top of town is an area earmarked for regeneration with Oastler Market moving to Darley Street development in 2022 and plans for a ‘city village’ where the market currently sits. This area is a mixing bowl of creativity, design and entrepreneurial spirit, with a mural from London Street artist Mr Cen, creative co-working spaces from Assembly Bradford

15

To start your morning, it’s a coffee and bite to eat, and you have two great options up here with Bread & Roses and Plant One on Me. Plant One on Me is a coffee come plant shop with a choice of 250 plants. The Oastler market itself hasn’t changed for many years and the calm environment differs from the panic of the supermarket. The family-run fountain cafe has original 70s wood panels, orange walls and bingo hall style carpet, it’s understandably a popular choice as a film location. Entering the market all your senses

are stimulated, from the smell of the spice stalls, the gentle chat of stall holders to the vibrant textiles of the haberdasheries. The Oastler Market is fully stocked with fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables from all over the world, the quality is fantastic and so are the prices. Cupboard staples can be found in Rosawithas, a family-run deli said to be one of the oldest in West Yorkshire. Got a recipe that requires something you can’t find in a supermarket? Chances are you can find it at the top of town. There’s lots of choices for lunch in the market, why not treat yourself to a Beef pattie from Andies African Kitchen or a Massaman curry from the Thai Noodle Bar. If that’s not your thing there are plenty of options

and the independents businesses opening in the area. This diversity is celebrated through the variety, cultures and places represented by these businesses. The top of town is becoming an inspirational place to work, shop and meet likeminded people.

nearby on the ever-changing North Parade, recent addition Crafted offers small plates of food and craft beer. If you’re heading down towards the Science and Media Museum, stop at the Bradford institution that is Pizza Pieces, a family run Italian where you can buy by the slice. Just around the corner is The Exchange Craft Beer House a favourite for beer lovers, also offering an impressive take out list. Before you head home, pick up some sour dough from Lefteris cafe on Tyrrel St or visit the Rooftop Café by the Cathedral and not forgetting the cake selection at Cake’Ole in city park. If you are someone who lives near Bradford and never goes to Bradford, you are missing out on the vibrant food, shops and stockists. The Oastler market with a one-way entry system, hand gel on entry and stock filled shelves is a fantastic alternative to Supermarkets and opportunity to shop local.

Independent Saltaire A guide to the fantastic indie venues putting Saltaire on the map by Hazel Slow

On the quiet preserved streets of Saltaire there is a revolution happening. A force of independent food and drink establishments are changing the landscape of the village. Pre-Covid-19 there was a resurgence of independent bars, cafĂŠs and restaurants across the country. Peoples habits and attitudes changed towards food and drink. They were now looking for quality, responsibly sourced and local food and drink.

Independent stores can offer a more personalised service as often the owners themselves work there. In Saltaire, you can grab a take out coffee made by Joel from Giddy Arts using his own roasted coffee by Jolly Bean Roastery. They also have an eco and refill section stocking local favourites including Miski’s famous salsa. The most recent edition to the Saltaire independents is Mr Whetstone refill store.

You will also find the tastes of Scandinavian from Nordish, Beth and Sam said they wanted to ‘incorporate the culture, people and places that inspired them in their food’. The beautiful Victorian stained-glass windows set the scene for their array of ever-changing sweet treats. Along the flagstone pavement and along the quiet narrow streets to the hustle and bustle of Bingley Road. When it is time for another coffee you can grab a latte from Tambourine, not forgetting the Olive Tree and Quaffery. There’s a little piece of Italy from Buonissimo Deli offering authentic meat, cheeses and Italian kitchen staples. Saltaire and surrounding areas have a fantastic vegan offering with The Willow Tree and Dandelion Vegan Cafés and most places having a dairy alternative and vegan option. Venture to the Terrace café, bar and restaurant and enjoy the taste of French cuisine, a warm welcome and

the sounds of Parisian music. Eric has created a little bit of Paris in Saltaire You can enjoy a beer and a chat with Phil at the Cap and Collar or a Saltaire brewed beer from Salt Brewing with a wood fired pizza. Carry on to Al’s Star Bar or a short walk into Shipley to the Triangle bottle shop and bar. Saltaire wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Fannys, sit sipping a Saltaire Blond and enjoy the glow of the fire and the buzz of conversation. Saltaire’s authenticity, entrepreneurial spirit and ambition has put it back on the food and drink map. Independents and small business owners in the local community are the key to regeneration.

Changes in ways of working and less commuting creates an opportunity to boost the local high street. With people being around more during the day, they have more opportunity to shop local and shop small. Independents can diversify quicker than the larger chains to take advantage of this opportunity. With Edward Street Bakery moving next to Tambourine and Binns butcher’s expansion, this shows with adaptability and passion you can succeed. If an independent business can survive the Covid storm then they are here to stay.
