President's Preface The Barbados Photographic Society has produced and published this book, “Historic Bridgetown, to commemorate and relive the history of our historic city and its environs through photography and script for the benefit of all and in particular the younger generation. Our city and island have undergone over the years several changes in architecture, the way of life and the landscape and we sought to provide the historical background to the selected locations and the reasons for the names. This book like others before it will record and celebrate the work and achievements of our foreparents, who strived to create this nation as we now know it. We are grateful to our team of photographers, our script editor and our editor-in-chief for the commitment and effort to execute the task. We are appreciative of the dedication and inspiration of our past president, Jeremy Greenidge, who initiated the project towards the end of his tenure. The Barbados Photographic Society, formed and registered in 2003, is committed to preserving the history of the times through images for posterity. I trust that this book (both in paper and electronic format), will become necessary reading for Barbadians and visitors so as to enlighten them of the unique and fascinating aspects of the history of this historic city. It is also fitting that the publication coincides with the country's celebration of its fiftieth anniversary of Independence. God's blessings to this our island nation.
