President-Elect Biden Pledged to Make Transgender Military Service a “Day One” Priority

P

resident-elect Joseph Biden promised he would move to immediately end the ban on transgender military service on the first day of his presidency, an achievable pledge that does not require the support of Congress or the development of any new policy provisions. “On day one of my presidency,” he wrote earlier this year in a series of answers to the Dallas Voice, “I will direct the Department of Defense to allow transgender service members to serve openly and free from discrimination.” Biden wrote that ending the ban, which President Donald Trump reinstated in 2019, was “not just the right thing to do, but it’s in our national interest.” In July, the Palm Center released a memo explaining that restoring fully inclusive policy would be straightforward and could be accomplished in just weeks. This is so because the policy allowing for transgender service has remained in place for those troops grandfathered under the prior policy of inclusion. “A return to inclusive policy could take place without delay,” reads the memo, “and certainly within 30 days, because current military regulations have preserved the full catalog of inclusive policy measures developed under the

Obama administration.” Palm’s memo was endorsed by nine major military, LGBTQ, and progressive groups who stated that they “look forward to a swift return to fully inclusive service.” They include the Center for American Progress; GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders; Human Rights Campaign; Lambda Legal; Modern Military Association of America; National Center for Lesbian Rights; National Center for Transgender Equality; Service Members, Partners, Allies for Respect and Tolerance for All (SPART*A); and Transgender American Veterans Association. Palm Center’s director, Aaron Belkin, has made the following statement: “We are confident that President-elect Biden will immediately reverse the ban on transgender military service upon taking office. Few actions are as straightforward and as consistent with the president-elect’s values as ending this unnecessary ban that punishes our troops and harms our national security.” outwordmagazine.com

RedRover Awards $240,000+ in Grants to Domestic Violence and Animal Shelters

R

edRover has awarded $244,627 in Safe Housing grant funds during the second grant cycle of 2020. RedRover’s Safe Housing grants not only enable domestic violence shelters to create onand off-site space to house pets, they also allow animal shelters to build dedicated housing for animal victims of abuse. Of the 14 grants awarded, six are RedRover + Purina Purple Leash Project grants, an extension of RedRover’s Safe Housing program. And in the second grant cycle of its kind, four Safe Housing Animal Shelter grants were awarded for a total of $80,000.

Since the program’s inception in 2012, RedRover has given 138 grants in 41 states, totaling more than $1.5 million. Additionally, the Safe Housing grants have created the first pet-friendly domestic violence shelters in nine states! RedRover President and CEO Nicole Forsyth said, “The link between domestic violence and animal abuse is undeniable. Too often, survivors will not leave an abusive relationship if they cannot find a domestic violence shelter that accepts pets. Our grants allow these shelters to create pet-friendly spaces so that no one ever has to choose between their safety and their pet.”

Netflix Sings in December

T

By Chris Narloch

he good news is Netflix subscribers will finally be able to watch the highly anticipated, star-studded, Ryan Murphy musical “The Prom” beginning Dec. 11, and the even better news is how good it is. (The movie is such fun that I wish more theaters were open so folks could see it on the big screen.)

The screen adaptation of a recent Broadway hit, “The Prom” stars Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, and James Corden as washed-up Broadway stars who endeavor to boost their careers by coming to the aid of an Indiana high-school girl denied the right to take her girlfriend to the prom. The film version is like “Glee” on steroids with bigger stars, and if you liked that Ryan Murphy TV series you should love “The Prom,” which really pops, thanks to big, bold, colorful musical numbers performed by a superb cast of Hollywood heavyweights. After you enjoy “The Prom,” you can also watch these other new, music-themed projects which are all currently available or coming soon to Netflix. Jingle Jangle “The Prom” has received more press, but this spectacular new Netflix movie musical is also deserving of praise and not just for its starry cast, which includes Forest Whitaker, Keegan-Michael Key, Phylicia Rashad, Hugh Bonneville, Ricky Martin, and Anika Noni Rose. Wait, Forest Whitaker sings? Yes, he does, and quite well I might add, as a once joyful toymaker who finds new hope when his young granddaughter appears on his doorstep.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Consummate actress Viola Davis does some of her own singing and the late, great Chadwick Boseman actually learned how to play the trumpet for his final role, in this new film version of a highly acclaimed August Wilson play about a tense recording session between two blues musicians in 1927 Chicago. Premieres on Netflix Dec. 18.

Christmas on the Square Dolly Parton, who is my idea of a Christmas angel, actually plays one in her current holiday film, which is about a woman who plans to sell a small town without regard for the people who live there. All you really need to know is Christine Baranski plays the villainess, and Dolly is the town’s saving grace. Parton fans will love the movie, which is as sugary as cotton candy and just as delicious. “Christmas on the Square” also contains 14 new songs written by the Smoky Mountain songwriter herself.

Levi Kreis

Levi Kreis -Bad Habit This former Tony winner (for playing Jerry Lee Lewis in “Million Dollar Quartet”) is back in a big way on this fantastic, five-song EP that finds the gay singer-songwriter detailing his journey back to faith and sobriety, on superb songs such as “Three Words,” “Standing Tall” and the terrific title track.

A Cornucopia Of Queer Music

By Chris Narloch

Q

uarantine must be good for creativity since so many wonderful queer artists have released new CDs in 2020. I decided to put them all together in to one big, fat collection of LGBTQ+ music reviews.

Sam Smith

Bob Mould

Bob Mould -- Blue Hearts Husker Du’s former singer (and guitarist) returns with his 14th solo disc, a wonderfully angry album that takes on the intolerance and homophobia of the conservative Trump era with a vengeance. Now openly queer, Mould rages and rocks hard on pointed songs like “American Crisis,” “Next Generation” and “Racing to the End.”

Troye Sivan

Kim David Smith -- Live At Joe’s Pub This is the first live disc by a very talented cabaret performer whose mission is to keep the music of Weimar-era Berlin alive. It’s especially great to hear live music these days -- since life is definitely not a cabaret at the moment -- and Smith really shines on “Shooting Star,” “Pirate Jenny” and “Nature Boy.”

Troye Sivan -- In A Dream “In A Dream” is the perfect title for this talented 25-year-old singer-songwriter’s dreamy musical landscapes, which take an even more lyrically edgy and personal turn on this recent EP’s half a dozen delicious songs. While not as radio friendly as Sivan’s previous work, the CD finds the singer in fine form, especially on “Easy,” “Stud” and “Rager Teenager.” Erasure

ANTIBOY -- A Glitch In Paradise Antiboy was the musical alter ego of the late actor, model and artist Harry Hains (“American Horror Story,” “The OA”), who died much too young at 27. Hains struggled with mental illness and addiction, but the hauntingly beautiful, futuristic-sounding, trans-positive music on “A Glitch In Paradise” will be his true legacy. Essential cuts include “Good Enough,” “Paradise” and “Dream.”

Orville Peck -- Show Pony I wouldn’t have thought to pair this masked man with Shania Twain, but the fellow Canadians sound great together on the dynamite single, “Legends Never Die.” That track is my favorite one on “Show Pony,” but the other five songs on this queer cowboy’s too-short EP are also moody and magnificent.

Sam Smith -- Love Goes Our favorite blue-eyed, British soul man is back with his queerest CD yet, and it features a whopping 17 songs, with very little filler -- unusual for a record nowadays. Smith seems much more comfortable now with both his sexuality and his sexiness, and he really has fun with the more upbeat songs, such as the saucy single “Diamonds.” Yet it’s the tearjerker ballads, like “For the Lover That I Lost” and “Breaking Hearts,” that really stay with you. Kim David Smith

Erasure -- The Neon Diehard fans will enjoy hearing new music from their favorite British synth-pop duo, but the band’s glory days are past on this inoffensive but forgettable new CD. After the opening blast of “Hey Now (Think I Got a Feeling),” things get pretty repetitive and dull musically, although lead singer Andy Bell’s vocals still sound great.

Orville Peck

Harry Hains (aka ANTIBOY)

Happy Holidays, Book Lovers!

T

hree recent books will undoubtedly find their way under many queer Christmas trees this month. Read on for details of these must-have literary releases from American Ballet Theatre, Dolly Parton, and more.

Songteller Singer, actress, philanthropist, theme park queen -- is there anything Dolly Parton can’t do? As this essential new book makes crystal clear, Dolly Parton considers herself first and foremost to be a songwriter, and she is one of the best (not just in country music but in all of music). All you have to do is read the lyrics of “9 to 5” or “Jolene” or “I Will Always Love You” on the page to realize how deep and smart Parton’s turns of phrase are and were, from the beginning of her career in the late ‘60s. Probably because of the boobs and the

Boys Dance! Boys who love to dance are center stage in this encouraging, positive, rhyming picture book about guys who love to pirouette, jeté, and plié. Created in partnership with the American Ballet Theatre and with the input of their company’s male dancers, “Boys Dance!” is an inspirational and creative book that demonstrates how ballet is for everyone.

Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850-1950 This gorgeous coffee table book showcases the history of romantic love between men in hundreds of moving and tender vintage photographs taken between the years 1850 and 1950. A visual narrative of astonishing sensitivity, the book brings to light an until-now-unpublished collection of hundreds of snapshots, portraits, and group photos taken when male partnerships were often illegal. The fascinating photos here were found at flea markets, in shoe boxes, family archives, old suitcases, and also online and at auctions. They are beautiful photographic proof of the various forms of love between men.

hair, Parton has never really received her full due as one of the greatest American songwriters, but this fascinating book should go a long way towards changing that. By her count, Parton has composed some 3,000 songs over the course of her life -- the first was written at the age of five or six -- and “Songteller” gives her fans the stories behind those famous songs, along with a treasure trove of lovely, vintage photographs.

“Queer Japan” is one of several must-see LGBTQ+ films now available.

Queer Films for Quarantine

A

By Chris Narloch

fter binging every episode of “The Undoing” and “The Queen’s Gambit” plus all of “Cobra Kai,” it’s high time you took a gaybreak to watch some LGBTQ+ fare. Read on for reviews of the latest and greatest queer films to watch during quarantine. Stage Mother This feel-good film stars the alwaysengaging Jacki Weaver as the spunky choir director of a Texas church who inherits her late son’s drag club in the Castro. Before you know it, Weaver’s character is saving drugaddicted drag queens, remodeling the club, and climbing onstage to belt out a dramatic rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Predictable but also irresistible, “Stage Mother” costars the great Jackie Beat as a character whose stage name is “Dusty Muffin.” The movie is now available via video-on-demand.

Monsoon Henry Golding became a movie star after the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” and now the incredibly handsome Asian leading man branches out with this subtle gay drama about a closeted guy who returns to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since he was six (when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war) and falls in love with another man. “Monsoon” doesn’t have much action, and you have to accept its slower pace, but I found the film sexy, moving, and very memorable. The movie is now available via video-on-demand.

Queer Japan Trailblazing artists, activists, and everyday people from across the spectrum of gender and sexuality defy social norms and dare to shine in this eye-popping, colorfully queer documentary about LGBTQ+ culture in contemporary Japan. From glossy pride parades to playfully perverse underground parties, “Queer Japan” pictures people living brazenly unconventional lives in the sunlight, the shadows, and everywhere in between. “Queer Japan” opens nationwide via theatrical-at-home and on-demand on Dec. 11, from Altered Innocence.

Ammonite I wasn’t able to preview this new drama before our deadline, but it will be available to watch at home on Amazon Prime Video and other platforms by the time you read this. Kate Winslet plays real-life paleontologist Mary Anning, who became famous for finds she made in Jurassic marine beds in the cliffs along the English Channel during the first half of the 19th Century. Saoirse Ronan plays the young woman who becomes her lover, in this speculative portrait of a fossil collector who never married, had no children, and was professionally (and perhaps personally) ahead of her time.
