Termly celebrations take place in QEGS library Despite the challenges that we faced in 2020, and continue to face, QEGS Senior Phase library continued to support pupils and encourage them to engage with reading. Guy Shuttleworth (OB) – RIP We are very sorry to report that OB Guy Shuttleworth passed away on 21st January 2021, aged 94 years. Guy attended QEGS in the 1930s and early 1940s, before going on to King’s College, Cambridge. Read more

QEGS’ EAL unit named as one of top 20 worldwide for engagement
The QEGS EAL (English as an additional language) unit supports pupils and students who are new arrivals to the UK and whose first language is not English. For the month of January, the unit has been recognised by Across Cultures as one of the top 20 globally for their levels of engagement. Read more

Pupils celebrate a virtual ‘National Storytelling Week’ After an impressive response to our National Storytelling Week competition, a lucky winner has been selected. Year 4 pupil Alex Zhou has won the ‘Bumper Book Bundle’ prize from the Senior School Library after his parents stated that he would love the prize to help with the reading he does each night with his siblings. Mr Aslam makes it into the Guinness World Records

EAL Pupils Make Progress During Lockdown 3.0 Whilst many pupils and students stayed at home during January and February 2021, taking part in remote learning, our EAL (English as an Additional Language) pupils continued to attend school so that staff could support their progress with learning English. Red Nose Day surpasses fundraising target Pupils, students and staff rallied together on Friday 19th March to support Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day by wearing silly hats and telling even sillier jokes! Each person wearing a silly hat was asked to donate £1, if they could do so, with many parents and carers generously donating more. Through all donations received, the event raised an impressive £738, surpassing the £500 fundraising target with ease. Read more

Accelerated Reader – Reading Millionaires & STAR Reader awards
This term we saw a huge increase in pupils across Years 7 and 8 achieving their Reading Millionaires and STAR Reader awards, two very special reading awards. Well done to everyone who has reached or even surpassed their word counts/targets. Read more

Annual Carnegie Book Award 2021 The Carnegie Medal is a British literacy award that annually recognises an outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults. It’s the UK’s oldest and most prestigious book award for children’s writing. A group of excited Year 7 and 8 students were the first to discover which books had gone through for the award. Read more
