OVALHOUS E APRIL – juLy 2019
WELCOME Our FiRST BiTE programme goes into overdrive this season; alongside Salty Irina, Just Another Day and Night and Rough Cut, we present six new plays by our Young Associate Artists in dynamic double bills. Twice as many new artists, making twice as many new plays, but still the same £5 to join in.
The clock is ticking: only two seasons left before we begin our move to Brixton, so we want to make sure each one is packed-full of extraordinary artists making bold new plays. This season features three eagerly anticipated plays. After its sell-out success in 2016, and following its first UK tour, we bring back Custody, Urban Wolf’s hard-hitting play about deaths in police custody. We also bring two of the most successful FiRST BiTES from 2018 into production: Bella Heesom’s celebration of female sexuality Rejoicing At Her Wondrous Vulva The Young Woman Applauded Herself and GREY, Koko Brown’s exploration into mental health. For one night only (Saturday 13 July) there will be the opportunity to see the first two parts of Koko’s Colour Trilogy (WHITE & GREY) back-toback for the first time. *whispers* final part of the trilogy expected to begin development early next year!

Why would a confident 21st century woman feel inadequate when talking to her partner about sex? Join us on an epic journey of self-discovery through the garden of her sexuality to find out. Featuring really helpful ideas such as: 'Only Boys masturbate', 'You Are A Sex Object', and 'Female genitals are gross', this is a story of self-love, encompassing shame, pride, fury and liberation. Revealed is the hidden battle between Brain and Clitoris; Appetite and Ego; shame-free sensuality and the desperate need to be ‘normal’, which everyone will recognise, regardless of gender.

The light of dawn is lurid and horrible, as always. There's a lot of blood on the pavement. Anna and Eirini notice a series of racist murders in their neighbourhood. Unwilling to ignore the situation, they decide to infiltrate a far-right festival to identify the culprits. But when the nature of their relationship is uncovered, their safety is under threat.

salty Irina is new play by Eve leigh (The Trick, a Hightide and loose Tongue co-production). It’s a coming of age story set against the rise of the far-right. It’s about the optimism and dangers of political action, and the giddy awkwardness of a new relationship.

Every day we enter spaces that provide us with comfort. Sometimes we enter communities where we are less at ease. But we cross these boundaries with confidence and humility; embracing our identity, not trying to please.
“
Exploring the events in a day, and over the course of one night at a house party, Azara struggles to shrug off questions about race, gender and sexuality… to just dance!

Using a canvas of sound, we journey in and out of a rhythmical dialogue between live drumming, poetry, breakdance and theatrical movement.

Through climactic scenarios, Azara tackles themes of isolation, ostracism, homophobia, racism and classism. For Azara this is just Another day and night. But for you this is a real story and one to be heard.

With these words Beckett’s masterpiece Waiting for godot ends and our play starts. not that we can say them out loud, we are not allowed. Unless any of you has three hours to spare. Unless we had no desire to change a single comma. But then again, existentialism, right? Who's got time for it these days… Besides, two foreign women aren’t your obvious casting. You and me are neither Sir patrick nor Sir Ian (possibly the furthest opposite you can get) and this isn’t the West End. little Soldier productions is coming back to Ovalhouse with a work-inprogress that promises to be more bonkers than Theresa may in a pig’s nose fighting the Dalai lama. A wild attempt to do some real theatre business-like. This is our time. This is our masterpiece.

Red pitch Written by Tyrell Williams Red Pitch explores the imminent demolition of a beloved football pitch as part of an ongoing regeneration around a council estate. Three lifelong friends Omz, Bilal and Joseph face all they’ve known being aggressively taken away from them, not only in the form of their football pitch but more importantly, their community and their friendship. It is a piece that tackles the topic of regeneration or gentrification as some may refer to it, through the voices of three 16-year-old young men, discussing the topic in a way so seldom heard.

Artist Call-Out Between leaving Oval in December 2019 and opening our new Brixton venue in november 2020, Ovalhouse will be based in Brixton without a venue. During this period, we want to radically rethink the way that we make theatre. Using our existing collaborative model of commissions and co-productions we will invite artists to develop work which takes place in unconventional spaces: in markets, streets, phone booths and tower-blocks. Artists will reimagine, reanimate and reinvent the way in which the public engage with these spaces through art.

We will present 3 seed commissions (FiRST BiTES) and 3 co-productions from April to September 2020. to apply please go to: ovalhouse.com/theatre/how-we-workwith-artists
