SIDIKKA SANUSI AND ABUBAKAR KURFI THE REGAL WEDDING OF

IN KANO, NIGERIA

I

t was classy and cultural, it was religious and wondrous, indeed, it was four-days of romance, elegance and glamour fitting for a member of the royal household when Princess Hafsat Saddika Sanusi, daughter of the Emir of Kano, HRM Muhammed Sanuss II wedded Mallam Abubakar Umar Kurfi The Emir of Kano’s Palace in Kofar Kudu area of the ancient city hosted many of the activities starting from the Kunshi ceremony. The adorable bride was quartered in the home of her mum, the Emir’s first wife, Hajia Sadiyya, who was obviously filled with joy. The ceremony itself was held at her fore court at the Giwa Wing. Traditionally, the Kunshi is like the bridal shower, where the bride is specially prepared indoors for matrimony. It also an occasion where she dances and generally has fun with friends and members of the family. We were told that though other wives of the Emir could attend, the mother of the bride could not savour this occasion. Thus, Saddika was heralded with royal trumpets and drummers as she arrived the venue, every step she took was met with cheers. When she settled into her specially-crafted seat, the short ceremony began. There were a few speeches before the ceremony dovetailed into a session of eating and dancing. The following day, it was another important ceremony known as the Kamun Amariya, this literarily means catching the bride. It was at this ceremony that many of the guests caught a first glimpse of the handsome groom, his friends and family members.

DAURA AMARIYA

8

According to Hajia Zainab Sanusi, the bride’s aunt, Kamu Amariya is one of the important events of the wedding ceremony. “Kamu Amariya” literarily means “catch the bride”. The groom’s family comes and negotiates with the bride’s friends for her release to them. It is usually a fun-filled night. This was no different. At night, Hajia Sadiyya Sanusi treated guests to a royal feast at the Mother’s Night, which was attended by mostly women of both families. The couple made an appearance, and because they were not officially married, one could see that they tried hard not to be too intimate in the open. The Walima or Wedding Fatiha was the official nuptials of Sadikka and Abubakar. This was the ceremony where in the presence of Islamic clerics, the two families will agree on a bride price, exchange pleasantries and become one. This all important ceremony was held at a special area within the Emir’s Palace. The Emir himself was not there. In fact, the invitation to this event read “Alhaji Nasir Ado Bayero, Chiroman Kano invites….” Elders of both families were there and the ceremony took less that ten minutes before the Clerics declared the marriage sealed and cheers emanated from all corners of the venue. This was a mal- only ceremony. The pomp and pageantry of the royal household soon unfolded within the Palace immediately after the fatiha. This was when His Majesty stepped out from his inner chambers into public glare in a sumptuously decorated horse. It was such a spectacular sight to behold as indigenes and guests stood in awe while he gingerly galloped along. The Emir, soon dismounted and spent time receiving guests who had come from

far and near to felicitate with his family. The show of obeisance and his open door policy of receiving all both rich or poor was quite instructive. Emir Sanusi later hosted some of his select guests to a private lunch in an inner part of the palace. The guest list was so scrutinized that all those who partook of this royal gourmet feast, including this reporter, were less than 15! Those at the table with the Emir included Mr. Wale Edun, Chief SOB Babalola, NBA President, A.B. Mahmoud, SAN and businesswoman, Hajia Bola Shagaya. Later that event, the couple and their families treated guests to a firstrate Wediing Dinner at the popular Afficent Centre. The décor was top notch. Everywhere glittered as exotic chandeliers and candles glowed.Fresh flowers and lovely centre pieces combined to ensure that the venue was welcoming and cosy. The Special Guest at the occasion was First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari who was represented by First Lady of Sokoto State, Hajia Miriam Aminu Tambuwal. In her welcome address, Hajia Bilikisu Bell, an aunt of the bride described the event as the wedding of the year. She noted that it was great that the families were ending the year with such a joyous occasion. She thank God for bringing the families together and prayed that the couple will enjoy marital bliss. Hajia Bola Shagaya in her own speech, also prayed for the success of the marriage. According to her “May Chief Rasak

Almighty Allah blesses their marriage with wonderful children, and my only word of advice is patience, patience and patience all the time, you understand where she is coming from and she will live up to expectation” For Hajia Hadisa Galadanshi Adehi she stated “I wish the couple very happy married life, My advice to them is to understand that marriage is a journey; to handle all their differences without any third party, be patient, be peaceful, become great friends and always wear a smiling faces. Most especially, put God first in everything, always be prayerful. When there is a problem, pray first, don’t discuss it with

anybody, even your mother, talk to God, pray to him and Insha Allah, it would be solved” Friends of the couple also took their turn to speak: The Maid of Honour, Aisha Madugu was full of praise for the beautiful brde “You are everything I ever asked for in a best friend. There are really not enough words to describe the kind of best friend you have been to me, and there are really not enough words to describe how happy I am for you tonight. We have laughed, we have also cried together. All I can wish you is to be a wonderful wife and in the future a great mother. I know that you have found a good man. I love you so much

and my Allah bless your marriage abundantly. Groom’s friend, Abba Garko was next to take centre stage. “Congratulations my friend; let me say that Saddika is lucky to marry a man who is the epitome of devotion and decency. You are great guy and I know from all you have said, you truly love this lady and so we are all so happy for you both. Congratulations my friend” The session of speeches were rounded off by the Special Guest of honour, Hajia Tambuwwal who was very brief “I wish this newly wedded couple, happy married life and more blessings from above” Thereafter, the hilarious Master of ceremonies invited the couple for their very first dance. Later, they cut their cake and guests were entertainment by a rising musician. The groom later thanked all guests on behalf of the two families. He was full of thanks for the Sanusi family for allowing him from Katsina State to take their Princess as wife. He thanked his parents and members of their family for the immense support and then rounded off that he will love and cherish Saddika forever-and everyone cheered! From then on, the event took a life of its own, guests had a full course meal, assorted drinks and then danced till well into the night.

r. Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin, business mogul, Founder and Proprietor of Oduduwa University, Ile Ife was full of joy when friends, family and well-wishers gathered to honour him on his 60th birthday. The amiable gentleman spared no cost to ensure that the occasion was not only grand, but the ancient city of Ile-Ife where the celebrations were held

86

The celebrant, Dr. Ramon Adedoyin

reverberated with festivity. As a man who is passionate about philanthropy and giving a helping hand to the needy, the landmark birthday was another occasion to give back, therefore he began the celebration by spreading joy and putting smiles on the faces of the sick through visiting and presentation of gifts at the Charity Home located at The Polytechnic, Ile Ife, which was also established by the

celebrant, an Educationist Par Excellence. That day, Dr. Adedoyin not only presented items, he actually spent time with them, eating and drinking and exchanging banters. A true evidence that he was a genuine Man of The People. Later, that day, the celebration hit a higher tempo when a mega celebration unfolded at the Hilton Hotel, Ile Ife.

eath is inevitable, and comes to who it will, when it will and where it will. But sometimes, it comes to those who are quite irreplaceable like Alhaja Omo’ba Nimota Moradeun Ashiru Nee Adelaja. A great personality who impacted many lives she came across, Alhaja Ashiru was an achiever, fervent Muslim, caring, loving, and responsible mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and above all a strict disciplinarian. This explains the reason God had to grant her quite a glorious 96 years of existence. The Princess was a highly successful woman, whose life and times impacted on her biological children and other family members who have now become giants in their chosen profession and are doing great things for Nigeria and around the world. Her passing really pained her family who depended on her for wise counsel and a soothing motherly affection, but when the inevitable happened, she was buried according to Islamic rites. As it norms, over a month later the family hosted a worthy reception at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, and was professionally anchored by veteran Broadcaster, Prince Bisi Olatilo. The high calibre of the guests who were at the ceremony led by the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and his wife was evidence that Alhaja Ashiru and the entire Ashiru family had the right clout, connection and were well respected in the Nigerian so-

96

ciety. King Sunny Ade was the main artiste who entertained guests on the day, and everyone were pampered well with superb victual. The late Alhaja Ashiru was born in Ijebu-Ode on June 1, 1920. Her father, Late Pa Adeshina Adelaja, a well-respected Ijebu Royal and extremely elegant man, was from the Fidipote Ruling Family of IjebuOde, her mother; Mama Awonatu Adelaja, was from the family of Jagun Alausa of Imupa, Ijebu-Ode with lineage traced to the Owu-Ijebu royal family. She married Late Pa Adeyemi Ashiru Ashiru in 1940. She was one of Pa Ashiru’s wives in a polygamous home. The devout Muslim was very fond of her husband. She was installed as the Balogun Adinni Obinrin of the Obanle Obalode Mosque in Ijebu Ode in 2014. Despite her faith, she never dictated her children’s religion. She is survived by all her children and there spouses: Otunba (Prof.) Oluwatoyin Ashiru & Olori Adenike Ashiru, Deaconness Oluyemisi Okubote & Deacon Olusla Odubote, Mrs Ibironke Okikiolu & Mr Olufemi Okikiolu, Mrs. Mojisola Sanni and Mr Abayomi Sanni, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru & Olori Olukemi Ashiru and Engr. THE COLOURFUL TRADITIONAL WEDDING CEREMONY OF

DR. AISHA EGALA AND MORGAN DAVIES IN ACCRA, GHANA

Story: Michael Effiong Photo: Adekoya Adegbite, Ben Dzakah & George Okoro

W

The lovely couple: Aisha & Morgan Davies

hat began as a chance meeting of two persons with similar interests in Bristol, England has ended in a wonderful celebration of love between Dr. Aishat Egala and Morgan Davies in Accra, Ghana. The lovebirds got married following three days of cultural, colourful and religious ceremonies that were witnessed by family and friends who came from all corners of the globe. This spectacular celebration kicked off with the very cultural “Lalle” Ceremony. This is an occasion where the bride is beautified with henna ink-and the females in the family come round to sing, cheer and generally rejoice with her. Aishat, a practising Medical Doctor was full of smiles, as she sat through the whole ceremony with a joy on her faceshe obviously was looking forward to this day-and from all indications it turned out exactly as she had imagined: Special. Later that day, Aisha changed to lovely traditional attires, and the venue, her family home in Accra, Ghana, erupted with jollity as traditional and contemporary music from the DJ’s PA system. It was at the prestigious Labadi Beach Hotel that the most elaborate reception was held the next day. For those who don’t know, Labadi is Ghana’s most iconic hotels. It was the hotel preferred by Buckingham Palace when Her Majesty The Queen visited Ghana-little wonder that royal treatment was also laid out during the wedding reception for Aisha and Morgan, a well-travelled Executive Chef. Guests who arrived early were treated to cocktails and canapés before they were eventually allowed into the heavenly decorated hall. The Event Planner and decorator went the extra-mile to ensure that the venue was welcoming, warm and splendidly arranged. The floral and lighting arrangement were simply spectacular. This lovely setting formed a perfect backdrop when the couple were ushered into the venue by the Master of Ceremonies. The whole event was seamless: From the couple and friends dancing excitedly into the arena, the cutting of the cake to them feeding and serving each with drinks, there was no dull moment. However, what could be considered as the highest point of the ceremony was the emotional speech by the bride’s grandmother.

She recalled the days of Aisha as a baby, and go-getting, serious-minded teenager, she thanked Almighty Allah for keeping her alive to witness the day. She wished the couple a blissful marriage life. Thereafter, the couple hit the dance floor, and were joined by guests-the dancing went on till the wee hours of the following day. The Islamic Marital rites better known as the Wedding Fatiha was held the following afternoon. This was what could be described as the official joining of the Egala and Davies families. The Master of Ceremonies was none other than Popular TV Personality, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu. He it was who introduced both families and also the Imams that were Present. Mr Osmond Egala, father of the bride and Mr. Robert Davies, groom’s father were both present as the rites which included prayers and payment of the bride price took place. When the couple were formally joined according to Islamic injunction there was a loud Allahu Akbar from all guests, and everyone was joyous.

Later, the venue was re-arranged for another session of eating, drinking and merry-making. It was a fitting finale to a colourful celebration which saw two hearts and two families become one! In an interview with OVATION, the bride told us that his beau has always been full of lovely surprises and that has kept the flame of the relationship burning. According to her, his proposal was so romantic “He booked a table at a lovely restaurant overlooking the bay of Naples, and the scenery was so wonderful. I had no idea he was going to propose and so when he popped the question, I said an instant Yes!” Aisha told us that she loves his kindness and honesty and that through-

out their five years of courtship, she never pressurized him over marriage because they were happy and comfortable in each other’s company. About her experience with the henna ink, Aisha said she loved every second of it, though it took all of four hours, she noted that “The experience made the whole wedding extra cool.” For Morgan, he really loves Aisha’s personality, her intelligence and her beauty. Reliving how he proposed, he told us that he wanted to make it as dramatic as possible and that was why he chose the restaurant with a spectacular view. According to him “I went down on my knees and proposed and was overjoyed when she said yes”

Morgan told us that he had been to Ghana three times so far and loves the culture, weather and the hospitable nature of the people. He also loves the food. His favourite being Banku & Tilapia with some Shitto. He revealed that he had no qualms marrying an African, for him “The questions I asked myself were: do I love this woman? Is this the lady I want to spend the rest of my life with? And when all the boxes were ticked? And she felt the same way about me, this was a no brainer for both of us. I am happy it has happened at last” The bride’s mother, the gorgeous Mrs Naheed Egala says the wedding of her daughter was the best day in her life yet. “As a mother, I am very proud of Aisha. She has always been an intelligent and obedient daughter and I am happy that this day has come and I can see joy written all over her face” “This is the first of my children who will be getting married so you can imagine the excitement and preparation. But we thank God it all went well, and we are grateful to friends and family who came from far and near to share this joyous occasion with us” Mrs. Egala told us that Aisha is a Princess and she really needed a Prince to compliment her and in Morgan, she has seen a Prince Charming. Having been married for 33 years herself, she wishes her daughter the very best and revealed that despite living in the United Kingdom, Aisha from childhood had always wanted to be married like an African “And I thank God that her father and I as well as all the family members have made her dream come through”. She eagerly awaiting to begin

her new role as a grand mother. Robert Davies, the father of the groom said from his observation, the couple are genuinely in love with each other and so he had not hesitation when it was time to give his blessing. Asked what is reaction was when Morgan brought Aisha home, Mr Davies stated “As an Executive Chef, I know my son mixes well with all kinds of people, so when we met her for the first time, we were happy for him. We were just glad that he had found love and was now ready to settle down to start his own family. Soft-Spoken Mr Osmond Egala, father of the bride said the family is happy to receive Morgan into their home as their son. He told us that Aisha will make a good wife because her mother has been a wonderful party and good role model for her to emulate. “If she follows our teachings, she will do very well as a married woman. I am very happy for her” Mrs Jayne Davies, the groom’s mother stated that she was very pleased for Morgan and Aisha. Like other members of the family, this was her first time in Ghana and she has been enjoying every moment of it. While advising the couple to be true to each other, she reveals that she will definitely be back on vacation. According to her “The Egala family are very warm and beautiful people, and I sincerely thank them for allowing our son marry Aisha”. She wished them the very best.

ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU S HA KES N IGERIA ON HIS POLITICIAN PAR EXCELLENCE

65 BIRTHDAY TH TH

Story: Michael Effiong Photoshoot: Dayo Adedayo & Photo: Adekoya Adegbite

H

istory is full of individuals whose presence changed the courseof human events and altered the fate of nations. One man whose actions will never be forgotten in the political history of Nigeria is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu The former Governor of Lagos and All Progressives Congress (APC) National it was who used his sagacity and wit to ensure the occurrence of one of the greatest upsets in Nigerian politics where an incumbent President was upstaged by the opposition candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. It was for this rare feat and more that the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos was filled with AList guests including Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote when he celebrated his 65th birthday. Not one to opt for the ordinary, the main event of his birthday was marked in extraordinary fashion with the 9th Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Colloquium with the theme, “Make it in Nigeria: Use what we make, make what we use". Indeed no politician has faced greater existential challenges or perfected the technique of quiet adjustment to shifting realities with greater skill like Asiwaju Tinubu, little wonder that everyone including Dangote now fondly refer to him as Jagaban of the World. The Colloquium recognising the need to engage the youths and prepare for generation next, began with a Youth Segment-and the speakers and panellist gave very good accounts of themselves. In his address, Asiwaju Tinubu said it was time that Nigeria changed its economic model as it was obvious that the old model, where the country relied solely on revenue from crude oil export, had crashed. He said it was good that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government had realised this and had begun the painful process of salvaging the nation’s economy by embarking on diversification. He, however, advised the Federal Government to

team up with private sector’s players in its quest to diversify the economy. He added that the country must borrow a leaf from the experiences of countries such as England, America and China, which had today become self-reliant by taking tough decisions. “We must learn from England, which barred the migration of its master craftsmen and the export of

textile looms at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution; to America and high tariffs it imposed on foreign manufactured goods for over 150 years from its independence until after the second World War; to China which implemented a most radical and comprehensive protectionist regime to become the world’s most prolific manufacturing nation", Tinubu said.

169

He said, like England, America and China, Nigeria too must decide what its economic strength should be and focus on same. “Whether we decide to focus our attention on steel, textiles, cars, machinery components, or other items, the truth is that we must focus on manufacturing important, useful things", Tinubu said. Tinubu also used the occasion to appreciate the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for his exemplary values. Tinubu stated, “For a moment, may I dispense with the formality of titles and protocol. Osinbajo is many good things. Today, may I simply call him my friend and brother. I must applaud President Muhammadu Buhari. He meticulously followed our constitution by temporarily transferring the helm to the VP. As such, the two excellent men exemplified teamwork and true meaning of unity of purpose. “These two men, although from different backgrounds, faith and professional experiences, have forged themselves into a team that manages complex matters of state and governance in a seamless and smooth manner. Try as critics might, they could not create any space between the President and his deputy.” In his goodwill message, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), said the theme of the colloquium was relevant to the country’s current realities. Buhari noted that the country ran into trouble due to over-reliance on imported products, which he alleged the past government did nothing to address. He said his administration was serious about facilitating local industries to make what the country needed, adding that only products that were strategic to the country’s

170

development plan would be imported. Also speaking, Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, admitted that the economic model that the Federal Government adopted was borrowed from the templatecreated by Tinubu in Lagos State which was being built upon by his successors. Billionaire businessman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, revealed that his cement factory had attained the capacity to export seven million tonnes of cement, adding that US was one of his company’s export targets. He thanked Tinubu for facilitating his company’s acquisition of 208 hectares of land in Lekki, for the Dangote Refinery which, he noted, was six times the size of the entire Victoria Island, adding that his refinery would turn out 650 barrels of refined oil per day, which would be consumed by both Nigeria and 15 states of the Economic Community of West African States. Dangote said the nation’s population, projected to hit 210 million in 2020, must be seen by all as a blessing. In his speech, Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode described the celebrant as a great Nigerian political product and a successful leader who not only mentored many leaders in the country but laid the solid foundation for the sustained progress of the State. Ambode likened Tinubu to a coconut blessed with divine task to be fruitful and useful to humanity, versatile, courageous, which could bear fruit for a long time. “Like the coconut, some by-products/fruits will get bad along the way or after being sold in the market; in actual fact, the

political product may not be the favourite of some other people. “The bottom line, however, is simple. If Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, were a coconut; I dare say, with all simplicity, I would be among the forefront liners that will eat, drink and sleep B.A.T. 24/7,” Ambode said. While alluding to Tinubu’s contribution to the growth of the State, Governor Ambode said: “There is no doubt the Asiwaju political dynasty is a made in Nigeria product. The foundation laid and blueprints developed during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State which cuts across all sections of the State’s economy have actually simplified the process of governance till date. It was an intellectually stimulating session that was enjoyed by all. As expected for a man of his stature,

there were many other birthday events, but one that was exceptional was the super exclusive Birthday Dinner hosted by Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi at the Lagos House, Alausa. It was an evening to relax and enjoy good quality food, drinks and musiceveryone, including the birthday boy had a great time. There were a couple of speeches as expected by his admirers but the quality of guests especially top politicians from the North and the East was a testament to the clout of Asiwaju Tinubu. A very emotional Asiwaju Tinubu told OVATION that he was thankful to God for keeping him alive and healthy. He also had wonderful words for all those who contributed to the success of his birthday.

NATHAN KWABENA ANOKYE ADISI (BOLA RAY) TH CELEBRATES 40 BIRTHDAY IN STYLES By Ben Dzakah

W

The celebrant responding to cheers supported by his sweet wife

e are just in the middle of the year, but famous Ghanaian Broadcaster, Nathaniel Anokye Adisi aka Bola Ray has certainly hosted the classiest and most exciting party of 2017. Dubbed “Bola Ray @40”, the spectacular evening was conceptualised by close friends and coordinated by his beautiful wife, Dorcas-and it must be said that they delivered an evening to remember. Bola Ray who has touched many lives with his craft, nurtured many artistes from nothing to something and spread joy to many homes felt like a real King that day. For some this was an occasion to say thank you to a man considered to be a dependable friend Hosted by Starr FM’s Anita Erskine with Comedian DKB as her sidekick, the celebration which unfolded at the scenic Royal Senchi Resort, Eastern Region of Ghana was attended by 300 of the celebrant’s family and friends: His dearest and closest were carefully selected to savour this occasion On this day, where his incredible success in the media was celebrated, it was an evening of more music, less talk, and so after the opening prayers, the floodgate of performances opened with a praise session by the Tagoe Sisters. Moved by spiritlifting song, the celebrant and wife soon joined them on stage, singing and giving praise to God. The Music Maestro, Kojo Antwi was also at his best, he it was who first ignited the party-and there were many memorable moments. He belted his popular tunes which was enjoyed by the couple whose friends formed a ring around them in excitement. Next was the surprise appearance of Marcelito Pomoy, Grand Winner of Phillipinas Got Talent 2011. We heard the celebrant loved Pomoy who has a high-pitched “female” voice and his wife, shocked Bola Ray by flying the singer to Ghana for the party. He gave a good account of himself. The celebrant and wife certainly rejuvenated their love for each other when Sarkodie hit the stage. His was a gentle, slow and easy

184

performance. He serenaded the audience especially the Adisis with his hits, and added a deft touch by introducing a special composition strictly for Bola Ray. It was Shatta Wale who really rocked the party to its very foundation. He was energetic throughout-and his special dance routine became the order of the day for all especially the ladies who hit the dance floor. That was not all, DJ Vyrusky of Starr Fm was also superb. Knowing full well that the audience was made up of people from different generations, his music selection did not leave any section out. He bridged the generational gap effortlessly. One of the major highlights of the night was the screening of a documentary on the celebrant. There everyone heard first-hand that it had not always been rosy for Bola Ray. She recounted the early days when he was club hopping and struggling to get clients to pay him. She described him as a hard-working man who is driven by his passion for music, a committed and loving husband and a wonderful father. On his part, Bola told Ovation, that he was thankful to God for everything. According to him during his speech, the evening was wonderful. “I am humbled by this awesome, wonderful, hilarious and outstanding night. This what family represents and this what friendship is all about. I thank you all. “On behalf of my lovely, able, gorgeous, amazing and sexy wife, I say a big thank you to you all. Above all, I thank God for all his Blessings. It has been great fun. I am happy, I hope you all are happy and enjoyed it all” The kind-hearted Bola Ray also used the evening to raise funds for the SOS Children Villages in Ghana. Six of his lovely portraits were auctioned and all the proceeds went to the internationally-recognised charity. This was one party, that many of the guests as they headed to their rooms at about 3.am when it faded, exclaimed “Oh What a Night!

op CEOs and professionals of all walks of life gathered at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos for the annual unforgettable evening of fun and entertainment hosted by Sahara Group. Sahara Group, one of Nigerians leading Energy, Oil, Gas and infrastructure conglomerates is known for setting the pace in all areas of its operations, and this event was no different. To the surprise of all present, it was announced that the Group for the second year running was also marking its 20th Anniversary. The Company had stated that the evening was to thank God as well as to create an atmosphere for everyone to relax and have fun-and they did not disappoint. Like the previous years, from

beginning to end, there was no dull moment as top artistes performed back to back. The only little interlude was when Co-founders: Tope Shonubi and Tonye Cole were invited for a broef speech. They revealed that the beginning of what has today become a behemoth with operations across Africa and beyond was very though. According to them, very few people believed in their dream and supported them and they showered those individuals and companies with praise. Of course, they did not forget the Godfactor too. They later also recognized staff who have served the company from 5-20 years. Artistes that thrilled guests that night included Adekunle Gold, Orezi, Mr. Eazy, and Sir Shina Peters. The atmosphere was indeed turbo-charged.

t is not everyone that lives up to 100 years on earth, and when such a person eventually passes on to glory, it is more of joy than grief. And this was exactly what happened to Chief (Mrs.) Regina Olayinka Akande, the mother of top businessman, Chief Harry Akande. Her final journey home began with a service which took place at the Cathedral Church of St. David, Kudeti, Ibadan, Oyo State, attracted international business men and women, community leaders, industrialists, political bigwigs and a host of others. Proceeding began when her remains were received at the entrance of the church by the team of officiating ministers led by the Bishop of Ibadan South Diocese, The Rt Revd J. A. Ajetunbi. He was assisted by Very Revd A. A. Alalade Ayinla, the Provost and Ven. O. O. Popoola (Canon in Residence). Once the casket assumed a prominent position in the church, selected Bible verses were rendered including John 11:25, Job 19:25-27, Psalm25:7 before hymn CH544 was presented by the congregation anchored

by the melodious voice of the church mega choir. With songs after songs, especially the rendition of The Strife is Over, the mood of the atmosphere was lively and it set the right tone for the sermon which was presented by the officiating minister. The Bishop charged congregants to emulate the exemplary life of the centenarian. He also admonished all in attendance to live to please the Lord in anticipation of Judgment Day when everyone shall give account. He rounded off by showering the departed and her family with prayers. As it is the norm, the Akande was invited for special thanksgiving session, they danced to the alter joyously as the choir rendered Chief (Mrs.) Akande’s favourite song: “Christi Mama Feran Julo”. The church ceremony was soon over and Mama was interred after a private ceremony at the church cemetery. The Late Chief (Mrs.) Regina Akande was born on June 14, 1915 in the city of Ibadan as one of seven Chief Harry Akande & wife, Chief (Mrs.) Tolulope Akande
