n the world of unassuming businessman, Greg Uanseru, celebrating a landmark occasion like his 60th birthday means hosting a one-in-town event to thank God for His blessings and favour. Such a grandiose party demands a big crowd, many famous faces and red carpet regulars who have been his loyal friends, people who the benevolent gentleman has known for ages.
7
Grego, as the President/CEO of GCA Energy Limited is fondly called, invited governors: incumbent and former, heavyweights from major political parties, captains of industry, oil barons, business moguls and friends from way back for this wonderful celebration. His, was indeed a party like no other. It will certainly be adjudged as one of THE parties of 2018. The kind of party you will remember if not forever but for years to come, on account of its sheer class, colour, glamour and first-rate fun. The celebration took months of painstaking planning and preparation. Yes, the celebrant was very clear about how he wanted his day to look. And with the help of his wives, his in-law, Mrs Pamela Shodipo and the efforts of high society supremo, Senator Daisy Danjuma, everything was properly co-ordinated. This reporter was a witness to series of meetings, and situations where the celebrant would shuttle back and forth strategizing with Senator Danjuma. Even the guest list and sitting arrangements were adjusted many times over as everyone who was somebody wanted to be at this superlative celebration. It was on Wednesday, July 25th 2018 that the hardworking, charismatic and always cheerful businessman from Edo State hit this significant milestone. On this auspicious day, he began the day in prayers with his family members but his plan that day was a special thanksgiving service at the Catholic Church of Presentation, GRA, Ikeja. Decked in angelic white, the celebrant who is a lover of exotic cars and have a few in his garage left one of his Rolls Royce Phantoms to ferry his wives, while he chose to ride in a black SUV belonging to a good friend. In church, it was a very lively and spirituallystimulating session that was enjoyed by all present. The service began with the singing of the popular chorus “ Halleluyah”
8
The officiating Priest, Rev. Father Augustine Ikuomola who led other men of God steered the ceremony expertly. But it was Rev. Father Joe Edem who preached the day’s sermon. He praised the celebrant for acknowledging God as the source of his success and coming to the vineyard of the Lord to say Thank You. Reading from various chapters of the Bible, he stated that those who give glory to God for their achievements or call on Him before embarking on any journey, never fail. He rounded off his sermon by praying that God will grant the celebrant long life, prosperity and excellent health. The service which sizzled with many songs, reached its crescendo when the celebrant and his family were invited to dance from the back of the church to the altar to officially express their thanks. It was a very lively moment as the top businessmen, who was joined by friends such as Rear Admiral Joe Aikhomu, Senator Musa Adede, Senator Daisy Danjuma, Mr Austin Alegeh, SAN and wife, Ferishat, Mr Frank Okosun, Ambassador Deregogo Ogan and wife, Boma, Aigbovbose Aig-Imoukuede, Mr Osten Olorunsola and others, danced excitedly after which he and his family members were showered with prayers and holy water by the priests. There was a special presentation by a Catholic Welfare Group who thanked the celebrant for his immense support, describing him as someone who gives ceaselessly. A powerful prayer session and a recessional hymn rounded off the occasion Minutes later, guests were treated to a sumptuous brunch by the celebrant at his expansive and classy home. There, they were well-pampered and given firstrate Uanseru family treatment. He also cut some cakes, surrounded by his dearest and closest family and friends. The session was officiated by Mr. Austin Alegeh, SAN.
On July 28th, that was the day the philanthropist extraordinaire had set aside to host the Mother Of All Parties to mark the landmark occasion. The glittering reception unfolded at the top-notch Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites-and this was one event that literally shut down Lagos. The amazing ambience of the venue was majestic, after it had been heavenly transformed by Mrs Ozo Adeyeye’s Flowerplus and her crew. The flower arrangements, the enchanting chandeliers and the centrepieces were indeed fitting for such a classy celebration. From the entrance of the famous venue, it was obvious that something big was going on. Big, bold and bright images of Mr Greg lined the walkway. The photoshoot was handled by celebrated photographer, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, no wonder the pictures were simply breath-taking The blue carpet of the walkway was complemented by soft blue lights, and this blended well with the white and blue décor. Indeed the whole place was bathed in blue! For the day, the celebrant’s in-law, Mrs. Pamela Shodipo handled protocols while the experience hands from KSquare Security were put at the gate to ensure that only the invited guests were allowed in to savour this one-in-town event. The guests list was starstudded, virtually everybody who was somebody was being expected. With a team of caterers, Saheeto handling small chops, epic tunes by famous DJ Jimmy Jatt, Cuppy and Vintage Band, the vibe was a perfect blend of classic oldskool, contemporary and cool. And the anchor was none other than popular comedian, Bovi. By the time guests arrived, the wine had been kept at the proper temperature, choice champagnes had been chilled to perfection, while the finest cognacs and whiskeys were on standby.

I actually grew up faster than most children because I lost my parents at a very young age. My dad died at 40 and my mother died at the age of 29. I went to school and was brought up by the Catholic Church
”
As a man who loves dancing and is usually good natured and funny, it was no surprise that the event officially kicked off when Mr Greg, the main man of the day danced into the arena from behind the impressive stage crafted by Nelson Jack and creative visuals provided by Olu and his team from Dujour Production Ltd Rocking to Diana Ross’s famous song, “Am Coming Out”, the elated celebrant decked in a made-to-measure black Tom Ford dinner jacket, black drop bow tie, white shirt and a black pair of shoes stepped out to a standing ovation by all guests. Of course, he was brimming with joy and beaming his trademark smile. He was soon joined by his wives and together they danced for a few minutes before making their way to their seats. Pastor Idowu Iluyomade of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God (RCCG) City of David Parish declared the event officially open with prayers and then the party proper began! Bolaji Banjoko, the talented saxophonist popularly called BJ Sax stepped up to titillate guests with a medley of popular Christian tunes. Guests were on their feet, singing, clapping, cheering and praising God. Mr Greg had stated that his party would have no dull moment “It will be enjoyment all the way, there will be no speeches”. And he kept his word. Switching from Vintage Band to DJ Jimmy Jatt and Cuppy, guests had a full dose of jams to enjoy. The fun-filled occasion reached its crescendo when he was about to cut his cake. The cake cutting session was moderated by celebrant’s good friend, GMD/CEO of Access Bank, Dr. Herbert Wigwe. He described the celebrant as a friend indeed. H e recounted how he wanted to make a very big business decision and asked for his advice, he said that all Mr. Greg said was “follow you conscience and do the right thing”. That statement, he said, guided his decision which turned out well at the end. With his wives, children and Governors Godwin Obaseki and Ibrahim Dankwambo, the celebrant cut his cake after everyone was asked to spell: J-E-S-U-S. 10
“
Trust is not a common commodity in business and I thank God that over the years that is one thing that we have become known for by our friends and partners
Then, everybody broke into a “Happy Birthday song”, then the DJ threw in Stevie Wonder’s famous Happy Birthday track and just when we thought that was it for that segment, the next voice that was heard was Mavin Records First Lady: Tiwa Savage! She serenaded the celebrant and guests with a medley of her popular songs, and the whole place was enveloped in jollity. Another star, Dr. Sid also gave a thrilling performance that got everyone dancing too. Later, Mr Greg’s daughter, Michelle, whose birthday fell on the very next day, was invited to cut a cake-therefore, for the Uanseru family, it was a double celebration. Michelle, as expected, was joined by her parents, family and friends. Like the music lover that he is, Mr Greg went to change to a more comfortable white top and pair of trousers-and he was on the dance floor most of the time. His guests were not left out of the dance session, with top class music wafting from the PA system, choice drinks flowing and assorted bites from gourmet chefs, the party was rocking big time. There is no shadow of doubt that Mr Greg Uanseru’s 60th birthday lived up to its expected A-Star billing because everyone really had a “Swellxellent” time.

THE MAN
GREG C ALLED
M
r. Gregory Uanseru was born in Warri, present day Delta State on July 25th, 1958. He attended both Primary and Secondary Schools in Otuo, Owan West LGA of present day Edo State. At the completion of the West African School Certificate (WASC), he came to Lagos, and with a strong Christian background that valued honesty, probity and hard work, he joined the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) in 1975, before he was employed by the Nigeria Airways as a Cabin Crew. At Nigeria Airways his industry and charm soon came to fore and he was elevated to the overseas route which ensured that he toured the world and was also sponsored to countless courses and workshops. This invaluable knowledge was a booster to his confidence and expanded his worldview so much so that he resigned eight years later in 1987, to set up his own business, Greg Continental Agency (GCA). Service delivery and customer satisfaction was second nature to him, and thus he was initially engaged in trading before he delved into procurements for the refineries/ Petrochemical industries. Years later, he restructured the company and has turned it into a full-fledged Engineering & Technical Service Company. The re-organisation of its operation also led to a rechristening and thus its present name: GCA Energy Limited. Today, GCA Energy Limited is a dominant player in the Nigeria oil & gas industry in the provision of major procurement, maintenance, metering & calibration, laboratory and environmental Services. Its headquarters is in Lagos, Nigeria with branch offices in Port Harcourt and Accra, Ghana, Houston, USA and Ottawa, Canada. He is an Associate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and his company has won several awards and honours. Days after his top-rate birthday party, we had this interview with Mr. Greg Uanseru in his lovely home in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. Enjoy Why was it necessary for you to begin your celebration with a thanksgiving service
There was no way I was going to begin my birthday in any other way but to express thanks to God. God has been taking care of me all these years as well as protected, guided, guarded and blessed me to the age of 60. It just had to be done. This belief in God, was it as a result of your upbringing
Of course. I was brought up in the ways of the Lord. I strongly believe that God plays a major role in our lives.
So tell us about growing up, about your parents and those
early days
I actually grew up faster than most children because I lost my parents at a very young age. My dad died at 40 and my mother died at the age of 29. I went to school and was brought up by the Catholic church under the tutelage of white Irish priests.
The Church
Yes, the Irish missionaries. They adopted me as their son, and I was sent to school by the church. They had a great impact on my life in terms of character building and general outlook about life. That upbringing taught you a lot
Absolutely, it taught me self-dependence and also built in me, the spirit of never giving up. It was a good foundation for all that I have become today.
Your story is very interesting because such an upbringing at times usually lead to children being wayward and lacking focus.
I would say I have been lucky and have enjoyed the favour of God. You are right about how some people who had the same circumstances as me turned out, but in my case, I was determined to be focused and also made sure that whatever I set my mind on, I struggled to achieve. I am told you worked in Nigeria Airways, how did you find yourself there
(Laughs heartily) It is a long story. Actually when I finished Secondary, I decided to come to Lagos. When I came to Lagos, my original plan was to study for my Higher School Certificate, you know, what we used to call HSC. On my arrival, I was told that I was too late, that admissions had closed. So I decided that instead of going back or staying idle, I should look for a job. I saw and applied for the job of a security officer at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA).
Nigeria must have been really good then, you just applied and got a job
Of course, the country was very good. I did not know anybody, I applied, got employed and went for all kinds of training. I was sent for a training programme at the Police College, Ikeja and I was also sent to the Sea School, Apapa. I was very young at that time and was really excited. There was this day I was walking around the Airport area, (Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja) and I saw a crowd of young boys and girls, in a queue. Like a typical young man would do, I was curious and walked up to one of them to ask what they were queuing for. He told me they were waiting to be interviewed for jobs in the Nigeria Airways. I told them I was interested and they said why not. So I rushed home and went to get my papers. When I got back, I joined the queue, I was interviewed and I got employed.

It was a very good place to work. They trained you, moulded you, exposed you too. We were one family, we had staff from different parts of the country and because we went all over Nigeria, we made friends with people from all over. It was fun

people who had worked for so long and had retired and I did not quite like what I saw. I wanted to live a good life, I did not want to retire and stay at home. The thought of my future kept me thinking of what next I wanted to do. Also, around the same time, I saw a couple of guys who were flying like myself but were now doing other things like trading. So I decided to join them and we started trading. The first thing we got involved in was selling cosmetics. Then I sold costume jewellery. Where you travelling to buy goods or you got from other people
I was traveling outside to buy them, and I also met one lady, who later became my business partner, I used to go to New York to buy things and send to her to sell. Then we went into cosmetics, hair products and shaving powder. From there, I met other friends, and I was involved in same trading but this time around I got involved in the oil and gas industry. I got some links and began to work with some foreign partners and from there, our
40
business began to grow.
Was it from the outset that your formed your company, the one where you are President today
Yes, when I formed the company, it was called Greg Continental Agency (GCA,) but it later became GCA Energy when we started working in the oil and gas industry. The company is over thirty years old now. At what point would say you hit it big or as they say, you made it
I will say that we have not made it yet (laughs heartily), we are still on course and God has been good to us.
So how has the journey been so far
The journey has not been too smooth but with the help of very good friends we have been getting ahead and striving to deliver.
What attributes would you say have kept your business going
Transparency and integrity has been key to our success. When we reach an agreement we keep to it, no
matter what. When we agree on a payment schedule, we do not give excuses and we also deliver our supplies on time. We have built a track record of excellence that has helped us over the years. No matter how tough, we ensure that our clients and partners are happy. The track record of honesty and integrity that I spoke about has helped us build a huge network with foreign companies. We now have about sixty of them working with us globally.
That means you have built a business that is trustworthy
Exactly, trust is not a common commodity in business and I thank God that over they years that is one thing that we are known for by our friends and partners
Let us change gear a bit and discuss the matters of the heart. At what point did you decide to settle down and start a family
Like I told you as a young guy in Nigeria Airways, we had a lot of fun, we were enjoying all the nice things that young men that age were enjoying. I just felt I have done as much as I could and it was time. I was not too

young then though, I was 30 and the rest as they say is history.
On your birthday, you came to the Catholic Church with our two wives
Yes, I was there with my wives and my children to thank God. There is no form of discrimination in my family, we are all together, one big happy family. I saw the camaraderie throughout the occasion, you are in deed one big family
Exactly
So what kind of husband and father are you
I am a very easy-going person, I love my family. I try as much as possible to make them happy, when I want to be firm, I can, but generally, I can be described as good natured.
Do you pamper you children? A lot of parents usually say, I do not want my
children to suffer what I went through and so spoil their children silly
Far from it. I do not pamper my children at all. I always let them understand that whatever they are enjoying is a privilege. I always tell them the story of my own humble beginnings. That I lost my parents at a very young age and I had no one. That I had to struggle from nothing. I tell them all the time that I had no loan from anywhere. It was not that my father had some money somewhere or he had a house somewhere, no, it was my first salary that I used to start life without support from anywhere or anybody. Therefore, I advice them that what you see here is not your own, you have to go out there and work hard to earn your own.

I had approached Senator Daisy Danjuma whom I will refer to as a dear sister about the fact that I wanted to have a good 60th birthday. I told her I really wanted to thank God in a big way for keeping me alive. So Senator Daisy,
my wives, family members, their friends and a couple of others put that evening together.
It was superb
Oh thank you. Everyone said they had fun which was the idea, I did not want any speeches, I just wanted people to come and have fun. I wanted people to dance and be happy.
I also noticed that virtually everybody was there, people from different parts of Nigeria and different political parties all turned up

During the preparation of that event, I remember you mentioning something about some charity projects for your people at home, how is that going
Yes, we have already started philanthropic projects in my place, Owan West (Edo State), we have given them water, we have given them light, we want to make the place comfortable so that people will not all need to rush to the city. My plan is to ensure that all the children there go to school. Education is very important, it should be made compulsory. I believe that it is lack of education that has been responsible for all manner of people using these youths for all kinds of rubbish. It is the reason these youths also engage in Anti-Social Behaviour. So I will ensure that enough good schools are built in my community. I will also develop playgrounds for sports. We will provide these basic amenities so that when the people who are in the city get home, they will see that those back home are not lacking anything. I am pained each time I drive around and see children roaming the streets or hawking instead of being in school No matter what, every child should be educated. If
Mr Udeme Ufot
we do not cater for this category of people in the society, we would never be safe and our children too will never be safe. I am scared at the number of unemployed and uneducated in our country. We have to try to educate and engage them.
One thing I have noticed here are your cars, can you remember your first car
That was a long time ago (thinks for a few minutes). I remember now, it was a sports car, I loved it so much, it was a Nissan 240 Sx Coupe.
Have you always loved cars
Yes, I have always loved cars, when I was growing up, I had told my self that I will drive this or that car. To God be the glory, whatever I said I will do, I have done. Even in my business, when I set out to apply for a business, I always get it. For example, I told you that I represent so many foreign companies here, whenever I go for such meetings to get my company approved, before I leave, I will pray and have it at the back of my mind that I want that business, when I get there, even before we start discussing details, they will just tell me, you have it, we are ready to work with you.

Femi Osunde, Peter Okundaye, Sen. Ehigie Uzamere, Capt Hosa Okunbo, Mrs Nkiru William-Hart, Tony Odigie & Capt William-Hart Wow, that is God at work
Exactly. There is the divine being guiding my affairs, God has been very good to me. In the next ten years where do you see yourself, what do you hope
to achieve
In the next ten years, when I am 70, I want to be able to create more job opportunities for Nigerians. I want to be able to create employment for more young Nigerians. There is so much unemployment in the land and people are suffering. It is as a result of the lack of jobs that the youths are being used for terrible things. At 70, along with my friends, I should have been able to take a lot of people off the streets. At the moment I am in the oil and gas industry, so I will create avenues to train many of these youths to be useful. I am told there are many jobs in the sector but no trained hands
60
to take them
You are right, that is why I am saying we will encourage many youths to take up technical education, hands-on training to fix valves, bolts etc there are so many opportunities that are waiting to be filled this will be my main task in the next ten years.
From what you have said, you have so much compassion for people, are you considering politics
Never. Some of us are not just cut out for the kind of politics that is being played in Nigeria at the moment. There is so much insincerity.
But you have friends in politics
Yes I do. We do not discuss politics. When they ask for advice I give to them and that is where it ends.
Okay on your birthday, you really danced, is it that you love dancing
Sure. Right from my youth I have always loved dancing.
My sister used to tell people that when I was young, I used to go missing. When they were looking for me all they needed to do was to listen to where music was being played and when they trace the sound, sure enough, they will meet me dancing and having fun while people will be clapping for me. There was a time I was almost expelled from school for going out to dance.
You must love music too
Yes
Who are your favourite musicians
I do not have favourites, I just love music of all kinds. That was why you saw me dancing all night long that day (laughs heartily)
Finally, what will you consider to the philosophy that has guided your life
Always be kind to others. Never ever mortgage your
integrity.

My dad is a very warm hearted person. He always cares about people and he is a great dancer (laughs). He is the best dad ever and someone I would not want to get rid of. He has been with me and made me happy for the past 22 years. A particular incident I won’t forget was when I was in my second year in the university, my dad, someone who is always on his laptop followed me to school during my exams. At that time, I was going from home to write my exams, my dad followed me on the 2hours 30 minutes journey. You can tell that he is someone who cares about his kids and he is willing to go the extra mile for them. Heis my hero and I love him. I want to wish him the best, more years and God’s blessing.
Michael Greg-Uanseru

I must say, it has been wonderful being his sister inlaw and I pray that the Lord will continue to bless him, keep him and sustain him in the mighty name of Jesus. This is the beginning of his life. He has a lot going for him and I wish him the best.

We thank God Almighty for Greg attaining the age of 60, especially in Nigeria where life expectancy is much lower. He is one of those who should thank God for his Grace, Favour and mercies always. He is now a senior citizen. We would have been celebrating his birthday and retirement if he had been a civil servant. Greg is like a younger brother to me. I am still baffled how he has managed to keep his home intact and happy with two wonderful and lovely wives who live in harmony with disciplined, well-behaved children. Congratulations Greg at 60. May he continue to enjoy good health, long life, more prosperity and continued happiness. He is a very nice and generous person to his friends and family. May God bless him and his family and grant him all his hearts desires. Amen
Capt. Hosa Okunbo
I am grateful to the Almighty God for creating such
an amazing person like Greg. As he clocks 60, I join his family members, friends and associates to celebrate him. I am delighted to note that your love for our great country Nigeria and indeed humanity, in general, knows no bounds as you have over the years become an epitome and beacon of hope and support to many who have come your way. It is my prayer his star will never grow dim and he shall spend the rest of his days in God's abundant blessings. Amen
Femi Otedola
Greg is a wonderful friend, who is always happy and joyous. I pray that God will continue to bless him with good health and may he live long to see his children flourish and also see the growth of his children’s children.
