ARTIST TO WATCH
WHY JOHN LISTER III IS AN ARTIST TO WATCH
Ahead of his debut at Sotheby’s Auction, ORAG caught up with Lister to talk about his journey to becoming an artist and, he shared five things every art collector should know about his success. Born in Shreveport, L.A. Lister spent the majority of his life between Maryland and Louisiana. At a very young age he started creating with food, i.e., oatmeal. By the time he was 4 years old he grasped the human figure by looking at Jet magazine, watching sports, which he would often recreate as doodles. In college his football career was cut short due to a surgery to lengthen his limbs. During his hospital stay Lister discovered “Grays Anatomy”, that was given to him to read and study to keep from bothering the nurses on duty. This can be seen in his works of art dealing with his femur.
When did you choose to become an artist? “It wasn’t until college at Morgan State University, where I decided to become serious about producing artwork”
What is something you try to implement consistently throughout your work? “Art is historical as it is personal, each art piece I create will deal with history whether it be large or small”
What kind of symbolism can be seen in your art? “The art pieces show heroism, kingship, fertility, and religion of antiquity of West Afrika and the African Diaspora.”
What different eras of black history can we see? “The art produced will always show blacks in history, not just 1619 to 2020. But before 1619, with the great kings of West Africa: Ali, Musa, Zulu, and Hannibal of Carthage. I also enjoy creating jazz and sports legends who are black”
What inspires your art and your unique artistic methods? “I pull inspiration from fragments of West African art and use techniques from periods like cubism, primitivism, abstract expressionism to create what I deem to be: Post Neo Expressionism or Post Abstract Expressionism.” LET’S TALK ART 32

Stand back, enjoy, and bask in the glory of your collection. Remember, your gallery wall can easily be swapped or updated with new favorites as your collection grows. For example, if you started out collecting fine art giclee’s, you may want to switch it up for originals as your collection grows. Just decide what you want to take down and either remount or replace it with a similar sized piece. Still not confident about your art installation, ORAG is here to help with scale, lighting, conservation and more.
