Music enriches and enhances all of our lives. Marching Band helps students build character, learn self discipline and learn how to formulate and achieve goals. Harry Wenger was instrumental in teaching this art to thousands of students in Owatonna. His namesake company Wenger is widely recognized by musicians worldwide as a premier provider of high quality and innovative musical products. This festival is designed to provide opportunities to showcase these young band members hard work in a competitive format as well as showcasing the many beautiful assets of the Owatonna community. Hello everyone,
The great City of Owatonna is happy to welcome everyone to the third annual Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival. We are excited to be hosting such a great event within our community and look forward to the festival remaining a tradition for years to come. While you are in our great city, we hope that you will feel welcome and have time to enjoy our community. We have a variety of parks and trails you can enjoy either picnicking or just walking for exercise. Don’t miss the opportunity to stop in our downtown area to visit our great stores and possibly stop into Costas’ Candies to enjoy their great homemade candy. We offer a variety of attractions. We are the home of Cabela’s, so don’t miss an opportunity to see all their great displays and maybe you’ll find something to take home. Owatonna was the site of a children’s orphanage which became a State School and now houses our City Administration Offices; the orphanage has been restored and provides a great opportunity for families to see what it was like back in the ’40s. There is also a Village of Yesteryear located at the Steele County Fair Grounds which provides a look into the past. Also, if the band members want to cool off, we have a new state of the art aquatic center which provides great outdoor water entertainment. Again, thank you for participating in the third annual Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival. We hope you enjoy your time in Owatonna and will come back again.

Harry Wenger Band Festival participants and spectators, On behalf of the Owatonna area businesses, it is my pleasure to say “welcome to our community.” This third annual band festival event continues to be a tradition that we believe will extend decades in Owatonna. The festival is named after Harry Wenger, founder of Wenger Corporation. Harry Wenger was a music teacher before launching the world’s largest music school equipment manufacturing operation. Now Wenger products are used by musicians around the world and are still designed and built here in Owatonna. In addition to Wenger, Owatonna boasts more than 40 industries that manufacture products shipped around the globe. This is where Josten’s corner jewelry store grew into a Fortune 500 ring company; where a small company named Viracon grew to provide architectural glass to the Pentagon, World Trade Centers and the new Freedom Towers; and where a farm implement dealer helped create a $5 billion business insurance company called Federated Insurance Companies. Owatonna is a thriving regional center, consistently ranking among the most livable small towns in the country according to Money Magazine, American City Business Journals, and Demographics Daily. A vibrant downtown business district, outstanding health care including a brand new SS1M hospital, more than 700 acres of parks and trails, and two championship golf courses, Owatonna has amenities that rival those in cities many times its size. Thank you for coming to Owatonna. We hope you enjoy the Harry Wenger Band festival and we look forward to seeing you as a visitor again.

What are the judges looking for? When watching marching band parade competitions have you ever wondered how the judges come to their conclusions in ranking and evaluating the bands? Here is some helpful information that should give you important insight on this difficult task. A panel of six judges evaluate specifically assigned areas (or captions). Each of these captions are divided into specific criteria that the judge will be evaluating. Their respective assignments are just a portion of the total score of 100 possible points. The judges evaluate the entire show from beginning to end, using both a tape recorder and judging sheet to record their comments. These are given to the bands after the competition.
General Effect Music — 20 points This judge is located on the judges platform and takes a broad approach to the performance from a musical perspective. In addition to evaluating the overall musical quality of the presentation and the repertoire itself, the judge must consider the overall effectiveness of the entire show. All aspects of the show must combine to create a unified production with the music as the basis.
Music Performance — 20 points This judge is located on the street and will evaluate the technical accuracy of the musical performance. Individuals as well as the woodwind, brass and percussion sections will be judged on balance and blend, consistency of tone and pitch, technical precision and musicality of performance.
Visual General Effect — 20 points This judge is located on the judges platform and takes a broad approach to the performance from a visual perspective. They are
looking for how well did the band “sell” their show to the audience. Emphasis is placed on the marching drill itself in terms of its execution and effectiveness in creating visual interest and in highlighting the musical presentation. Other considerations include visual creativity, demand, coordination of all visual elements with the music and overall professionalism and intensity of the group.
Visual Performance — 20 points
This judge is located on the street and evaluates the technical proficiency of the individual marchers in the entire ensemble. Judging aspects include marching accuracy, posture, poise and definition of a uniform marching style within the group. Also included are spatial control, equipment technique, artistic expression and visual cohesion with the musical performance. The score is based on overall marching excellence with consideration of the demand, construction and content of the marching drill.
Color Guard — 10 points
This judge is located on the judges platform and will focus exclusively on the color guard unit in all its parts. They are looking for uniformity in movement and equipment technique as well as emotional portrayal of the mood and music. Key is the ability to show a broad range of visual work that compliments the overall presentation and does not distract from the musical performance.
Percussion — 10 points This judge is located on the street and will focus exclusively on all members of the percussion section. They are looking for uniformity in stick control and technique, rhythmic accuracy, dynamic contribution that augments the overall musical presentation, tone and pitch, balance and blend within the section as well as the entire musical ensemble.

Owatonna’s ‘Music Man’ Band festival honors the legacy of Harry Wenger
T
he first-ever Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival was held on June 19, 2010. It was then — and remains still — a fitting tribute to one of Owatonna’s leading businessmen, whose lifelong relationship with music started as a passion which became his livelihood and ultimately spurred the creation of a multi-million dollar corporation with a global presence. However, Harry is not simply remembered as a business mogul, but “The Music Man” — a hard-working innovator with a wide practical streak and a soft heart. He is perhaps best described by a telling line in a tract written for his memorial service in 1992. “Harry had square, efficient, expressive hands — hands that could direct a symphony, devise an intricate mechanism, clean fish, skin a deer, pat a child on the head or caress a loved one,” it reads. Harry followed a winding path to Owatonna, the town where he would leave an indelible mark. Harry Wenger was born on Oct. 5, 1906, near Wayland, Iowa — a small town in the state’s southeastern corner. His parents were SwissGerman Mennonites — farmers who ultimately raised nine children. Harry was the middle child. Hard work and long hours defined Harry’s life from the very beginning. He and his siblings adhered to a strict routine during the week working the family farm — milking cows, shocking grain, tilling the fields and collecting eggs. “They were very resourceful. They made everything they needed,” said Harry’s granddaughter, Wendy Wenger Dankey. “I think that helped him with his business later on. He was very creative.” The family took a break on Sunday to attend the Mennonite Community Church. After the service, the children had a precious window of free time, but even then Harry used those hours productively. He fished in Crooked Creek or hunted squirrels, collecting their pelts and selling them for spending money. Harry attended a country school until eighth grade. Most Mennonite boys did not get further than that, but Harry’s parents allowed their children to go to high school if they agreed to keep up with their farm work. Harry bloomed in high school. He discovered his calling after sharing a cornet with his brother in the band. He was soon the lead tenor in the school’s operetta. The family encouraged Harry’s interest in music and bought a piano. In the evenings, the family sang hymns together. Before long, Harry was asked to lead the choir at church. According to Mennonite tradition, Harry stayed on the family farm until he was 21 years old. After he came of age, he left home with $80 earned from a fall of shocking corn. He used the money to
enroll at the Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa — now known as the University of Northern Iowa. He paid for room and board with blood, sweat and tears. At his rooming house he kept the furnace hot, shoveled sidewalks during winter and even tore down a barn — board by board, nail by nail. After graduation, Harry landed a job teaching music in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, thanks to a well-placed neighbor who appreciated Harry’s efforts to rid the neighborhood of the old barn, which was apparently quite an eyesore. That simple twist of fate led Harry to his future wife, Ruth McCorkle, a fellow music lover and cornet player. The two played together in the local brass ensemble and it was the start of a lifelong duet. The two married three years later. Meanwhile, the Great Depression lay hard on the U.S. Harry and Ruth muddled through with a succession of teaching jobs in Iowa’s small towns. In spite of widespread economic strain, Harry earned a degree in Iowa City all the while holding a full-time job teaching music. In 1936, Harry and Ruth made their way to Owatonna, where he took over the school’s music department. Students flourished under his instruction, and in the early 1940s, the band, choir and orchestra all won first place titles in national competitions. Harry was also integral in the creation of the Owatonna Carolers, a distinctive choir that regales the town with holiday tunes to this day. During this time, he began tinkering in the basement of his house on Mitchell Street, trying to create a better conducting baton or music stand. “At first, I don’t think he had any idea that he was developing a product line. He just did it because he was fulfilling a need he saw,” Wenger Dankey said.

In 1946, he created and patented a special chair to help children balance the unwieldy sousaphone. In the latest product catalogue, Wenger Corporation lists the “Tuba Tamer,” a device that pays homage to Harry’s first widely marketed invention. That same year, he officially formed the Wenger Company. Ironically, Harry found himself back in a barn: His first factory operated out of a horse barn, which cost $2 of rent each month. In 1953, he resigned from teaching to take up manufacturing fulltime. Employees remember Harry as a diligent and personable boss who made a point of touring the factory floor at least once a week to talk to each and every worker. ohn Holland has two very different favorite activities. Holland loves music and, for most of his life, has stood in front of or been a part of booming bands. But Holland also loves to fish and has spent many days hoping for bite on a quiet lake. Since retiring from the Owatonna school district’s music department in 1998, Holland has often picked the silence of a stream over musical notes. In fact, Holland even loaned his piano to his son Matthew, so he can teach music to John’s grandchildren.

The band is annually 120150 students strong. After 6 to 8 in-state parades each June,
the Patriots annually march in major parades across North America and have won the majority of competitive parades they have entered (that history is detailed below). They have also performed on-field for the Colorado Rockies (July 4th, 2005), the Seattle Mariners (July 5, 2010), and annually for the Minnesota Twins since in 2009. The Patriots’ performance revolves around traditional precision marching and two pieces: “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and a George Gershwin-flavored medley of “Americana” tunes by award-winning composer Carl Holmquist which tips its cap to the Patriots Medley of the band’s early years. Five directors from the two schools comprise the Patriots’ staff: Brian Lukkasson (Marching), Andy Erickson (Woodwinds), Dan Wenkel (Drumline), Corey Ledin (Guard), and Executive Director Chris Ravndal (Brass). Drum Major David Busacker, Band Commander Ian Niewald, Guard Commander Michele Heggerston, and the section leaders do great work to help strengthen the performance, traditions, and social fabric of the band.
