Tree City USA® – Le Center has been named a “Tree City USA” since 1997. Tree City USA® is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org) in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The program provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns across the country. Le Center meets the criteria established by the Tree City USA® program through the establishment of a tree board and tree care ordinance, as well as a comprehensive community forestry program. We are ready to met your needs. We have an active Chamber of Commerce and enterprising Economic Development Commission and we would like the opportunity to join together with you and build a long, lasting and beneficial future together.

In 1990, Le Center was designated a Minnesota Star City. Communities that completed the application process, established economic development goals and received technical assistance from the State Department of Trade and Economic Development. The status of being a Star City provided opportunities in attracting new business and industry and gave community leaders opportunities in training and networking with our Star Cities. Over 200 cities in Minnesota were designated Star Cities before the program ended during the Carlson administration. Le Center

History

County was covered with what was known as the “big woods” – a very large tract of deciduous hardwood timber that stood between the prairies of the southwest and the pine forests of the northeast in Minnesota. The soil was black, heavy and, when wet, very sticky. The soil (the land) was what brought the settlers to the county and was their inducement for spending their lives working in the woods The first towns established in Le Sueur County or what far from any population center. was to become Le Sueur County, were established, platted and built along the Minnesota River. They were Le Sueur, Le Sueur was the first town of any large size and it was designated by the legislature as the county seat. Shortly after the beginning of settlement along for necessary business, to pay taxes, to serve on juries, to the Minnesota River in southern Minnesota, these people attend court, to register land sales and to trade with the began to take up lands away from the river. By the end of various purveyors of services. In 1853 the territorial legislature of Minnesota passed an act establishing a number of counties along the Minnesota River, Le Sueur County among them. The earliest settlements in Le Sueur County took place along the river which, as a navigable stream, provided European man with a highway into this part of the Minnesota territory.

The roads were terrible. If you lived in the southeastern quarter of the county you had a long and very hard journey to get to the county you had a long and very hard journey to get to the county seat. The county was crossed by a number of pioneer roads. Among the, Dodd Road, which ran from the St. Peter area to Cleveland, Cordova, and then to Kilkenny and on to the east into Rice County The center of the county, however, was without settlement of any size. Another important road for residents of Le Sueur County was the Wheeler Road, which extended were isolated from markets, from mail service, from Waterville and the Le Sueur area. or during wet weather, it was all the coachmen could do to make this trip in a day. It was a “horse killer,” and was a misery for everyone; the driver, the passengers, and the horses. Before long a climate of opinion arose to the effect the county seat should be relocated. At first there was an attempt by the Cleveland community to acquire it. A referendum was held in which Cleveland received the largest number of votes, but according to the court, there were certain informalities in the counting of the ballots and the election was thrown out. The county seat remained in Le Sueur.

sheriff’s horses, found it necessary to acquire the land, which we now call the courthouse park where the present courthouse stands.

7

A deal was struck with the Le Sueur Center Land Company agreeing the county should pay the land company $5,000 plus the title to the county poor farm located on the east side of Lake Volney (a total of 160 acres of land) in exchange for the title to the block the courthouse stands on today.

The relocation of the county seat had the effect of dividing the journey to the county Again Cleveland tried and for a short time in 1875, they seat as equally as possible held the county seat. The county offices were housed between the residents of temporarily in an unused church, the remains of which the various portions of the were only recently torn down. The county seat was then county. This was a good returned to Le Sueur. compromise in locating the A number of businessmen, led by L. Z. Rogers of Waterville, undertook to make possible the location of the county seat as was possible. Le Sueur Center was now county seat near the center of the county by acquiring considered, what is known a tract of 160 acres at what is now Le Center and platted in the south, as a “courtit. They offered the use of a newly constructed two story brick building to the county board for use as a courthouse house town.” It was still by no means a commercial center, if a referendum of the people of the county agreed to but there quickly grew up a number of businesses which allow the moving of the county seat to this new location, which they chose to call Le Sueur Center. The referendum catered to the needs of travelers and visitors to the county seat. There were hotels, restaurants, blacksmith shops, livwas held and passed. The county offices were moved to eries, saloons, general stores, and the homes of the various the new location in 1876 and the county seat has recounty officers who had moved their families to the new mained here ever since. county seat. In the late fall of 1867, just two years after the close of the Civil War, the first railroad entered Le Sueur County from the north in the Minnesota Valley and arrived n Le Sueur. It continued south through Kasota, to the Mankato area and on to St. James. A few years later, in 1876, the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad was built from north to south through the eastern portion of the county passing through New Prague, Montgomery, Kilkenny, and Waterville. The railroad provided rapid transportation for the farmers’ grain and livestock which could be sent to market in the Twin City area. This left the farmers of Le Sueur Center area at relatively the same

disadvantage they had always suffered in that they were as far as possible from transportation. This had also been true in the days of the steamboat trade when the steamboat was rapid transit for freight, passengers, express and mail. It was now true with the railways running down the east and west sides of the county, but not through or anywhere near the center of the county.

Le Sueur Centre • Le Sueur Center Center • Le Center

The original plan was to establish this village at the Union Centre site, one mile south of the present location of Le Center. However, due to a juggling of the section number it was moved to its present location and named Le Sueur Centre, long before the village was officially incorporated. On February 28, 1877, a post office was established in Le Sueur Centre. On October 2, 1893, the name was changed to the spelling of “Le Sueur Center.” There was considerable confusion with mail service for Le Sueur and Le Sueur Center and on December 5, 1930, the voters of Le Sueur Center agreed to change the name to “Center”. On January 23, 1931, by a vote of the residents 283 to 54, the name was again changed to “Le Center” and has remained as such since that date.

For this reason, Le Sueur Center remained a small, residential community until the turn of the 20th Century when finally a railroad was built. In 1903 the Milwaukee Railroad Company built a branch line, which passed through Le Sueur Center. Suddenly the town was easily accessible. The railway also brought the telegraph. You could now get on a train on the east or western sides of the county and make connections with this cross railway which met the St. Louis Railroad at Montgomery and the Omaha Railroad (or the Minnesota Valley Railway) at Kasota and come directly to Le Sueur Center. There were two passenger trains each way, each day, as well as a large number of freights and specials. The town suddenly began to grow. In the first decade after the coming of the railway, much of the large, permanent construction took place in the business district of Le Sueur Center. Banks were established, a stockyard was built and farmers’ produce could be rapidly sent to market from Le Sueur Center. What had been the isolation and disadvantage of the Le Sueur Center area, now became a great advantage in promoting the growth of the town. When the railway came through, Le Sueur Center was able to seize almost the whole of the center of the county as a trade area. It acquired a larger trade area than many of the other, earlier established communities. With the stimulus of public business at the courthouse, banking, transportation, establishment of various church denominations in the town, the building of a large public school in 1903 and the beginning of road construction as we know it today, Le Sueur Center suddenly began to come into its own. In a few years, (two decades at the most) it acquired the major outlines of the town, Le Center, that we know today. Written by John Zimmerman

Schools The Le Center Public School system was organized around 1879 and a small structure (12x16) was built. Around 1880 a new structure was erected. In 1896 the school had an enrollment of 98 pupils. In February 1903, the district residents voted to bond the district in the sum of $8,000 to build a new brick school building, which was located on the present school site. The building was called McKinley High School. In 1907 the first class graduated from the high school. There were additions in 1914, 1937, 1954, 1961, and 1969 and 1998. On June 28, 2011 a vote was put to the Le Center, Montgomery and Lonsdale residents asking if the three communities should consolidate their schools. The vote had to pass in all three communities. Le Center’s residents voted 551 Yes and 501 No votes, allowing the vote to pass by 50 votes. Montgomery citizens passed the vote 717 to 126, and Lonsdale’s voters passed it by 221 to 132. Over the next year many committees were formed and made decisions on the new district name, mascot, school colors, where sporting events should be played etc. Effective July 1, 2012 the residents of Montgomery-Lonsdale and Le Center will be known as the Tri-City United Titans, School District 2905. The South Park in Le Center is adjacent to the Le Sueur County Fair Grounds off of Hwy. 99. At South Park you’ll find a heated zero to 12 foot deep pool as well as a baby pool for families of all generations to enjoy. South Park also has a great playground area and two shelters. The park is also the home of the Ray Plut baseball field where the 35 and over baseball team, “The Braves” play as well as junior high baseball teams. In the heart of the park is a very nice playground area and a lot of “green” space for running and playing. The Le Center Lions pavilion is also located at the North Park with picnic tables.

Centennial Park (West) North Park

The North Park in Le Center invites youth to play basketball, softball, swing and climb the monkey bars.

Centennial Park which is also known as the “West” park is well shaded with horse shoe boxes, two softball fields with lights, a small playground, sand volleyball court, and a pavilion with
