NEED TO KNOW

Luke Ebeling, Michael Schmitz — Ebeling, a senior, and Schmitz, a junior, will be midfielders this season for the Huskies. Ebeling, a star on the football team and a goalie during hockey season, is one of OHS’ better all-around athletes. Schmitz was third on the team in goals scored in 2012 with 10, one more than Ebeling. Hayden Holland — A junior, Holland has been one of the more dedicated lacrosse players in Owatonna, routinely playing the sport during the offseason. Holland played in all 14 games in 2012 and tied for third on the team in ground balls (28).

NEED TO KNOW

Ashley Kniefel — A senior captain, Kniefel is a four-year starter and possess the skill to play all over the field. OHS coach Bill Bernard call Kniefel a “tremendous all around player.” Amber Grunwald — Also a senior, Grunwald is a three-year starter in net for the Huskies. Bernard calls Grunwald “fearless between the pipes,” which leads to the players in front of her play better. “Her teammates thrive off of her energy in the defensive zone,” Bernard said.

UP AND COMING

Unknown — “It’s hard to project two up and comers. The major jump in skill development happens in the offseason, and we have not yet had our first practice. I do know that we have a talented and hungry group of 9th graders who have played club lacrosse for a number of seasons, and 10th graders looking to make major contributions,” Bernard said.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Liz Emanuel — It will be hard to forget Emmanuel as she graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

OUTLOOK

“What is your season outlook? Who are the favorites in your conference and in your section? “We go into each season with the goal to play to the best of our ability. Lucky for us, our players continue to work hard and improve, so we set our goals higher. We want to win our section, and there are a number of good teams that stand in our way. As far as teams in our section, Lakeville North has been strong for a number of years and should be so again. Lakeville South has had our number the last few times we have played them, but we feel as though it is our turn.” — Coach Bill Bernard

COACHSPEAK

“We will be an athletic and mentally tough team. My expectation for each of them is that they continue to ask of themselves ‘How do I get better?’” — Coach Bill Bernard

OUTLOOK

“Lakeville North looks to be the favorite in our conference. I expect we can be over 500 this season and hope to finish in the top half of our section. This you’re the section could be a little more of an even playing field in reducing the section from 15 teams down to 7 for this year. Last year there were only 4 secUP AND COMING tions in the state and now there Ben Gillard — Gillard scored one varsity goal in 14 games last are 8. I expect a commitment season, and will no doubt improve on that number as a junior this from our players this year to year. keep improving. I feel that with ParkerHoen — As a sophomore in 2012, Hoen played in seven our schedule this year we have varsity games, but did not tally a point. the opportunity to be in every game.” — Coach Scott Seykora

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Matt Ritter — For three seasons, the Huskies knew who was in net, and what the odds were that he would give up a goal. Ritter stopped 70 percent of the shots he saw, and will leave a some big shoes to be filled at goalie. Tyler Yentsch — Like Ritter, Yentsch graduated and took with him a big number: 17, as in a team-leading goals scored.

FROM YOUR CAPTAIN “I expect my team to make a push in sections this year and I want my team to play to the potential that I know we are capable of.” — Luke Ebeling ROSTER Seniors Mitch Skelton, Luke Ebeling, Kyle Shaw, Gunnar Elstad Juniors Pete Hanson, Hayden Holland, Scott Swenson, Parker Hoen, Benjamin Gillard, Michael Schmitz, Jordan Klein

OUTLOOK

Girls golf: “We will be looking for vast improvement this year. We are very inexperienced from a playing standpoint. A strong point for the team will be there camaraderie. This group of girls gets along very well together and are very enjoyable to coach.” — Coach Don Henderson Softball: “Junior Haley Staffon is back for her third year of pitching. She will also be the leader hitting wise coming off a .349 season with 4 home runs. We also look for a big year from Kate Blaisdell who is back to catch again as well as Emily Hodgman and Sara Bucher.

They all look to give us some good punch offensively. “We have two 10th graders that we look to play big roles for us this year. Mateah Lamoree looks to take over at shortstop or second base and Karissa Wright in certerfield. Both are aggressive to the ball and hopefully with experience can plug some holes for us defensively. “I expect our team to go out and improve every game. We know we are a little young however if we play solid ball consistently in all phases of the game we can hopefully be playing our best ball come section time.” — Coach Brent Haala

OUTLOOK

Coach Bruce Huber: Youth dominates this year’s track and field program with only six upper classmen making up the roster. We have great numbers of middle school, freshmen and sophomores out and they bring a lot of enthusiasm to the program. They possess a lot of talent and for the first time in years we are able to field distance relay teams with young athletes that are willing to work hard to improve. Our leadership will still come from our upperclassmen. Senior sprinter Abby Nerenhausen has a great work ethic and will challenge her teammates to work on continual improvement. Grant Klancher and Gavin Johnson will be called upon to provide leadership on the boy’s side of the team. Both Klancher and Johnson are throwers and Johnson is also the “senior” distance runner in the program. The Cobra’s return six events that qualified for the section track meet last year in Winona. Nerenhausen was a qualifier in the 100 meter dash and along with Katy Erdmann, Piper Yankowiak and

Piper Yankowiak

McKenna Rubin qualified in the 4 x 1 and 4 x 2 relays. Rubin was also an individual qualifier in the 400 meter dash while Yankowiak qualified in the 300 meter low hurdles. Johnson is the lone returning qualifier on the boys team making the section meet in the shot put. Triton graduated a host of talented sprinters last spring led by three event state qualifying Adam Bungum. Bungum finished second in the 110 meter high hurdles, fourth in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles and anchored the third place 4 x 100 meter relay team. Damian Johnson, Jack Blaisdell and Ayrton Henderson rounded out the relay quartet. Those three places garnered an 11th place finish for the team at Hamline University Our number one goal for the track team is to improve from week to week, meet to meet and have FUN! Running and competing in track requires a lot of intrinsic motivation. Our athletes have to find the way to overcome the “pain” of running and enjoy the little improvements that lead to success.

Coach Ali Mach: Our biggest strength this year will be our pitching. We definitely have some holes to fill on the defensive and offensive end but we have a number of underclassmen who have worked hard to earn a spot on the roster. We still have 5 returning state tournament starters and many other players who have had experience at that level so I expect them to lead the newcomers. We approach every season with the same goal in mind. We want the girls to be successful. As coaches we teach the girls to work hard to improve with each game, and to never let individual wants and needs come before those of the team. We are constantly pushing ourselves to be better. We believe that as each player grows our team will continue to improve. We definitely want to be playing our best ball as the season draws to an end and we know we have to earn an opportunity to play in the section tournament again this spring.

Rachel Malo — A senior, and an all-conference captain as a junior, Malo will be a leader both on the field and in the dugout. Coach Kristi Hiatt said she will be looking for Malo to be a “power hitter” this season. Nicole Buck — Buck, also a senior, plays a position, catcher, that requires leadership. As a returning all-conference player, Buck will also be asked to put up power numbers this season.

UP AND COMING

Emilee Steinbauer, Lianna Pilcher, and Kennedi Alstead — All three of these players are familiar with the varsity game, and all three will be asked to be “big contributors” according to Hiatt.

NEED TO KNOW

Colton Schock — The senior pitcher/right-fielder led the Huskies in hitting last season, and nearly pitched Owatonna into the Section 1AAA finals with a 1-0 loss to Rochester JM. Jordan Howe — Howe went 3-3 as a junior, compiling a 3.04 ERA while striking out 54 batters in 50 2/3 innings.

UP AND COMING

Luke Wanous, Riley Thompson and Carter McCauley — All three of these “new faces” played VFW baseball over the summer, and all hit over .400. Wanous is a corner infielder, while Thompson and McCauley patrol the outfield grass. In addition to big bats, all three can take the mound as well.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Kenzie Soukup — A senior captain, Soukup will take over the reins as the team leader. And with three key losses to last year’s team, Soukup will be in charge of a group that includes just one other senior in Lara Butler. Soukup will be tasked with taking the young team further into the postseason after a fourth-place, Section-1AAA finish in 2012. Maddie Peglow — Just a sophomore, Peglow is set to be a leader of this team for years to come. By being named a captain as a 10th-grader, Peglow will show the way for a team that includes five freshmen and three sophomores.

OUTLOOK

With their top three scorers gone from the 2012 squad, the Huskies will be a bit inexperienced in 2013. Coach Tim Hunst calls the team, “a bit of a wild card,” saying that without much of a varsity past to draw on, he’s unsure of how the newcomers will pan out. Rochester Mayo is considered UP AND COMING the Big Nine Conference favorite, Erin Abbe — After shooting a 197 in the Section 1AAA tourna- while perennial power Red Wing ment, Abbe, a junior, enters the 2013 campaign as the third-lowest is considered the top team in Section 1AAA. returning scorer for the Huskies. Abby Krumrie — In her final season, Krumrie, a senior, will be giving everything she has to crack the starting six.

Kurtis Pierret

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN Claire Konold, Lauren Numedahl and Sophie Hill — The Top three in the Huskies’ starting lineup from 2012 are all gone. Konold and Numedahl both graduated while Hill moved her game north to Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault. Hill, a state qualifier in 2012, was expected to be a contender for several years as she is only a sophomore.

Sean Grubish, Evan Mrozek and Matt VanOmmeran — While all three could fill out the rest of the singles spots, there will be some pressure on coach Curt Matejcek to keep at least two of the three in doubles, where the Huskies swept 11 times in 2012.

Kade Cronin, Derek Butterfield, Jacob Vaupel, Brandon Church, Zach Johnson, Brett Bulson, and Cody Borwege — This strong senior class has been thinking about this, their final season, for a long, long time. “Most of these guys are multiple year letter winners and have provided leadership for the younger kids coming up. I can remember this group as 8th graders dreaming and thinking about the future. The future is now for them,” coach Jon Chappius said.

UP AND COMING

Tyler Keller — The junior is more synonymous with wrestling, but it’s his willingness to work hard that has coach Jon Chappuis taking notice. “Tyler has a tenacity to win, as evident by his wrestling career. Tyler will make regular contributions hitting towards the top of the line-up and playing solid defense. He knows how to win,” Chappuis said.

GOOD LUCK AJ Chappuis

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Andrew Keller — The only starter gone from the 2012 team, Andrew Keller will be a noticeable subtraction as he was the Tigers’ backstop and best hitter. But the loss may be more apparent in the dugout, where Andrew really shined. “Andrew will be missed. He was a regular behind the plate as the catcher was a solid No. 3 hitter. What is going to be even harder to replace is his leadership,” coach Chappuis said.

After finishing 15-10 last year, the Panthers are back with a lineup that boasts three sophomores among their top golfers. NRHEG didn’t have a single player compete past the sub-section meet last season. This year, the team hopes to change that. The Panthers would like the entire team to compete at the Section 2AA Meet at New Prague Golf Course this season and get “an All Conference selection or two this year,” NRHEG coach Brad Root said. The Panthers have five returning letterwinners in Langlie, Lenort, Schwierjohann, Kelson Titus and Colton Ryg.

ROSTER Alyssa Esplan; Anna Lundberg; Anna Stork; Haley Deml; Hannah Lundberg; Jade Schultz; Kelli Harrington; Kendra Grothem; Makenna Thiele; Ryann Hagen; Stormi Hagen; Tara Simon NEED TO KNOW

Jade Schultz: Last season, Schultz was NRHEG’s best player: The then-sophomore hit a team-best .456 with 15 RBIs and finished with a 1.98 ERA in 131 innings from the mound. She’ll miss the entire season, though, as she damaged her ACL, MCL and meniscus during the Class AA Girls Basketball Tournament in March. Hannah Lundberg: Lundberg is an All-Gopher Conference returner who earned the “Most Improved” honor as a sophomore last season. She hit .286 and played in 132 innings last season, tied for the most on the team.

UP AND COMING

Anna Stork: As a freshman last season, Stork hit .268 with 10 RBIs to earn an all-conference honorable mention nod. Stork played 131 innings last season. Tara Simon: As a junior, Simon hit a solid .290 and knocked in 11 RBIs, second-most on the team. She was one of two Panthers to homer and was tied for fourth on the team with 18 hits.

NRHEG

NRHEG HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

NEED TO KNOW

Nic Mangskau: Mangskau played in all 22 games last season. He threw 40 innings and had a 3.50 ERA from the mound as a junior. He’ll be one of the more experienced seniors returning to the lineup. Brad Claycomb: Claycomb returns for his senior season after hitting .333 in 16 games last season. As a junior, he stole seven bases and didn’t commit an error. Casey Rosacker: The senior batted .353 in the 15 games he played in last season. He, too, will be one of the more experienced players returning to the lineup.

UP AND COMING

Sam Jewett: Jewett played in only six games last season, but he made the most of his time: He hit .667 at the plate and didn’t commit a single error during the season. Johnny White: White was injured last season, but NRHEG coach Jeff Reese said White put together a good season when he played American Legion baseball last summer.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Sam Lundberg: Lundberg, a senior last season, was the team stud: He hit .432 in 21 games while leading the Panthers in runs scored (25) and hits (32) and had a fielding average of .988. In the eight games he pitched, he went 6-0 with a 3.53 ERA. Those numbers earned him all-conference honors and a spot in the Lions All-Star Game.

The list of players NRHEG lost to graduation last year is pretty daunting. Of the nine seniors, five were all-conference players – Mitch Akemann, Matt Dahle, Dave Lassahn, Sam Lundberg and Jake Staloch – and two earned allconference honorable mentions – Lucas Meyer and Tyler Sorenson. Those players provided the bulk of the team’s success last season, which included a Gopher Conference championship and an 18-4 record. With this year’s less experienced roster, longtime NRHEG coach Jeff Reese expects some growing pains, he said. The Panthers plan to emphasize pitching and defense in the beginning of the season while searching for the right players at each position. Reese also expects several sophomores will get good looks at varsity time.

COACHSPEAK

“I expect us to do really well and play well, but without Jade it might be a little difficult and more challenging. But I still have high hopes for our team.” – Hannah Lundberg, junior.

OUTLOOK

The Panthers lost a big chunk of their offensive and defensive production in graduating seniors Tori Raimann, an all-conference player, Mandy Deml and Anna Schlaak. With those three, last year’s NRHEG team went 16-4 and 7-3 in the Gopher Conference, behind conference champions Mankato Loyola (21-2, 10-0 Gopher) and Blooming Prairie, the Class A runners-up. NRHEG found out in mid-March that it’ll face another loss this season: Jade Schultz (.456 batting average, 16-4 pitching record) will be out for the season after she suffered a knee injury in March in the Class AA Girls Basketball Tournament. The Panthers do, however, return a solid core in Han-

OUTLOOK

nah Lundberg (.286 batting average), Tara Simon (.290) and Anna Stork (.268). Along with Schultz, Lundberg was all-conference and Stork was an honorable mention last season. A couple of younger pitchers will be called on to fill the void on the mound, NRHEG coach Wendy Schultz said. “(The expectations) have shifted, but I think it might be a little different style of softball. We haven’t had to play too much defense really, a lot of times Jade would strike a lot of the batters out. ... It’s hard to say what’s going to happen with the situation but our defense is going to have tighten up and offensively we’re going to have to be aggressive, and on the bases, too.”

OWATONNA

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS GOLF

NEED TO KNOW

Peter Jones — Just a sophomore, Jones will be looking for his second-straight Section 1AAA individual title this season after leading both rounds of the competition in 2012. Also an all-conference pick in 2012, Jones’ average score last year was a more-than-solid 76.8. And after a summer playing in several local and national tournaments, that number is expected to improve. Ted Urch — Urch, also an all-conference selection last season, will look to improve on his 79.2 strokes-per-round average from 2012. And, like Jones, Urch has time to improve further as he is only a junior.

UP AND COMING

Will Kreutter, Jake Zulk — “Up” is the better word to describe Kreutter and Zulk as both are upperclassmen -- seniors to be exact. Jeffrey Johnson, Ben Konold, Gage Schuster — Johnson and Konold, both juniors, were key members of the Huskies’ JV squad a year ago, and are front-runners for the three open varsity spots in 2013. Schuster, a freshman, looks to continue a recent run of success from the younger members of the team.

MSHSL MINIMAL BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS FOR REGULAR AND POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT COMPETITIONS • Respect the American flag and the National Anthem. • Spectators must wear clothing that covers the entire torso. Those who do not comply or who wear clothing that is vulgar, obscene or that in some other way inappropriate, as determined by school/ tournament personnel, will be removed from the arena/stadium if they do not cooperate with this behavior expectation. • The use of appropriate language is expected at all times. Profanity, negative chants, booing, trash talk, name calling, personal attacks or other acts of disrespect are unacceptable and must be immediately addressed by school/tournament administrators. • Respect the game/contest. Under no condition shall anyone other than the members of the official squad enter the playing surface. No one may interfere with the contest in any way. • Hand held signs, which do not obstruct the view of others, will be permitted provided they are in good taste. Signs, message boards, “white” boards or other similar items contest/tournament officials deem to be in poor taste will be removed. • Artificial noise makers (i.e. megaphones, cowbells, sirens, whistles, thunder sticks, and other similar items) are not allowed. • Laser lights are strictly prohibited.

OUTLOOK

Team-wise, the Huskies could finish just about anywhere in the middle of the Big 9, but with some surprises, may push for secondplace. Peter Jones is among the individual favorites in the conference and the section, while Ted Urch isn’t all that far off from being in contention for a trip to state as well. The key to the season for this group will be who emerges to fill the three open spots after Jones, Urch and senior Kyle Dickerman. A roster of 23 will certainly give coach Keith Bangs some options.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Johan Frandsen, Tyler Jenkins — Frandsen missed the state tournament cut by one stroke, and was an all-conference selection in his only season at OHS. Jenkins was an all-conference honorable mention selection.

NRHEG HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

NEED TO KNOW

Carlie Wagner: Wagner, known mainly for her talent on the basketball court, has some skills in track and field, too. The junior is Class A’s returning high jump champion after jumping 5-06 to beat Caledonia/ Spring Grove’s Emma Lange last June at Hamline University. She’ll look to defend her title this season. Mikayla Lindell: Lindell enters her senior season looking to bolster a strong group of throwers. She also knows her track and field career will continue: She accepted a scholarship to throw for Winona State University’s track and field program after she graduates this year.

UP AND COMING

Katharine Lewer: Lewer is a returning starter from last season, and she has the talent to make an impact in the distance events: As a freshman cross country runner last fall, Lewer earned All-Gopher Conference honors.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Danielle Krueger: Krueger competed on the girls 4-by-200-meter relay team at the Section 2A Track and Field Championships last season, which took fifth out of eight teams with a 1:49.74. She also ran the 4-by-100-meter relay and the 400-meter dash for the Panthers.

ROSTER Abby Crabtree; Abby Wacholz; Carlie Wagner; Cece Torp; Crystal Olson; Destinee Meyer; Emily Eder; Emily Prigge; Emmy Hobbs; Gretchen Ramaker; Hailey Schuller; Jenika Jongbloedt; Katherine Lewer; Katie Cole; Katie Crabtree; Kayla Lindell; Kaylyn Borwege; Kelly Harden; Kristi Possin; Maddie Wagner; Marissa Mortenson; Marnie Wagner; Maurya Johnson; Mikayla Olson; Rayna Crosson; Samantha Pettey; Sandra Quezada; Shanna Stencel; Solveig Stafford; Talar Tieskotter

COACHSPEAK

“We look to have a good season. We have a lot of girls who like to work hard and try to improve every day. We want to do our best every time we step on the track. We would like to qualify a bus load to the section meet, and hopefully get a few to the state meet.” – Duey Ferber

Carlie Wagner

OUTLOOK

Last year, Carlie Wagner headlined the NRHEG girls track and field season by winning a state title in the high jump, something that NRHEG coach Duey Ferber said, in an interview with the Owatonna People’s Press, was the school’s first girls state title in his more than two decades as a head coach. Wagner was the Panthers’ lone state participant last season. After losing only one senior, Danielle Krueger, the Panthers have several experienced returners from last year’s team, which finished second in the Gopher Conference and fourth in Section 2A Subsection 5. United South Central/Alden-Conger is expected to be one of the strongest teams in the conference and the sub-section, but the Panthers would like to compete with the Rebels in both of those categories this season. Along with high jump, the Panthers are expected to be strong in sprints, relays and throws this season, Ferber said. With a mixture of youth and experience, NRHEG also will look for some younger athletes to step up this season.

SCHEDULE

April 4 at Waseca Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 9 Home Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 16 at USC Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 23 at Maple River Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 26 at Blue Earth Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 30 at Blooming Prairie, 4:30 p.m. May 14 at Medford, 4:30 p.m. May 23 at Sub-section Tournament (NRHEG), 4 p.m. June 1 at Section Tournament (Mankato West), 9 a.m.

FROM A PLAYER

“I really hope we can try to win conference. It’s going to be tough against USC. … I just hope we all succeed individually and as a team.” – Mikayla Lindell, senior

PAGE 17

NEED TO KNOW

TJ Schiltz: Schiltz, a junior, is back as NRHEG’s best long distance runner after being the lone athlete on the Panthers boys team to earn a state berth last season (He also went to state in cross country last fall). Schiltz placed 14th in the 3200-meter run at state and will look to get back to Hamline University another year. Ross Chester: Chester, a junior and one of seven returning starters from last season, is looking to push the limits of NRHEG’s long jump record: Panthers coach Duey Ferber said Chester’s on a mission to set a new school record in the event. At the section meet last season, Chester took eighth with a jump of 19-0.25.

UP AND COMING

Keith Maxon, Todd Erickson, Kevin Kalis and Nick Goette: This quartet of sophomore throwers has a lot of potential in the shot put and discus this season, Ferber said. Maxon, Erickson and Kalis are returning starters from last season.

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Geoff Ramaker: Ramaker, a senior sprinter last season, competed in the 100-meter dash and the 4-by-200-meter relay at the Section 2A Track and Field Championships last year. Tyler Holtz: Holtz was another section participant for the Panthers, finishing in a five-way tie for 10th place in the pole vault at the Section 2A meet last year.

COACHSPEAK

“We hope some underclassmen step up and find events that they want to push themselves in. We will be focusing more on the individual side of track this year, knowing that team scores will have us finishing in the middle of the pack.” – Duey Ferber

SCHEDULE

April 4 at Waseca Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 9 Home Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 16 at USC Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 23 at Maple River Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 26 at Blue Earth Invitational, 4:30 p.m. April 30 at Blooming Prairie, 4:30 p.m. May 14 at Medford, 4:30 p.m. May 23 at Sub-section Tournament (NRHEG), 4 p.m. June 1 at Section Tournament (Mankato West), 9 a.m.

OUTLOOK

NRHEG finished sixth in the Gopher Conference and fifth in Sub-section 5A last season. With a young, small team this season, NRHEG coach Duey Ferber says the Panthers hope to finish somewhere in the middle of the conference and the sub-section. The Panthers will have some upside, though, starting with their seven returning starters. First off, TJ Schiltz, the team’s lone state participant last season and top distance runner, is back for another year and is expected to have a good season in the 1600and 3200-meter runs. Distance running will be one of the team’s strengths this year, Ferber said. The Panthers also expect to be strong in shot put and discus this season, with returning starters Keith Maxon, Todd Erickson and Kevin Kalis, as well as with Nick Goette. Junior Ross Chester also is looking to boost his results in the long jump.

ROSTER

Aaron Seath; Adam Anderson; Brenden McMann; Cordell Peterson; E J Peden; Ethan Borwege; Hans Frank; Hunter Ryg; John Cole; Karter Sletten; Keith Maxon; Kevin Kalis; Kiel Sletten; Kollin Reese; Nate Krause; Nathan Wallin; Nick Goette; Orin Mely; Raece Johnson; Ross Chester; TJ Schiltz; Todd Erickson; Tyler Raimann; Tyler Schlaak; Zach Mely

Jonah Remker: A senior, Remker returns looking for a repeat performance from 2012 that saw the sprinter qualify for state in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Coach Kevin Stelter also said to keep an eye on several other returning athletes including Will Zimmerman (400, 300 hurdles), Mark Holzerland (1,600 and 3,200), Cam Peterson (1,600 and 3,200) and Andrew Stelter (shot put and discus).

QUOTES

“(Our season goals are to) win the Big 9 and (1AAA) True Team Section.” — Coach Kevin Stelter

OUTLOOK

The Huskies should be one of the deepest teams in the Big Nine Conference this season, and have the top-end talent in several events needed to rack-up the big points needed for both the conference and section true-team titles. The sprinters, led by Jonah Remker, are solid, as are the distance runners comprised mostly of Big Nine Champion cross country runners. If the throwers can continue to be at the top of the area, like they seem to be every season, the Huskies should have no problem reaching their goal.

NEED TO KNOW

Coach Ann Christensen: With such a large team and so many events, it is difficult to say that we have two athletes that a person should know about. If we look at it event by event – here are the top returners from last year: Hurdles: Emily Emanuelson, Morgan Malo and Torii Koch, Sprints: Madi Rysavy, Kathryn DuFrene, Steph Kretlow, Carli Langeland, Alix Schallau,Caitlin Anderson and Karissa Gregory, long sprints: Sydney Kasper, Jasmine Piepho, Rachel Smith, Erin Spatenka, and Madelyn Thein, Distance: Amy Filzen, Jackie Warehime, Amber Holte. Jumps: Kathryn DuFrene, Carli Langeland, Callie McCauley, Pole vault: Tatelyn Blazek, Jordan Wickman, Throws: Mikayla Bock, Kelsey Rohrig, Kirsten Elstad. We have a lot of new faces this year as well as a number of returning off our JV that should be contributing this season.
