PANAMA SURCHARGE “Panama Supercharge is an architectural dialogue between mass and fragility, expressed as thin patterned developable surfaces out of metal sheets and heavy masses out of raw concrete. The building is adjacent to the new pair of locks at the Panama Canal, creating an environment for cruise ship passengers while they are waiting for the ship to pass the lock.
Inside the plant houses visitors take a walk inside the jungle canopy. The architecture becomes physically intertwined with the surrounding nature to the degree of visually merging with it.
ARCHITECTURE | 16
In one hour visitors move through spaces with different identities and climate zones, creating highly varied, densely packed atmospheres. Planthouses, aquariums and an exhibition inform on the astonishing biodiversity of the area surrounding the Panama Canal. One side allows for spectacular views onto the water lock, on the other side visitors take a walk into the jungle canopy. The building becomes a threshold between an industrial structure and nature.

THE AGORA
TOM CARDEW
AGORA
University of Bath BSc Architecture United Kingdom
This scheme explores the role of architecture in relation to the local & global community through the evolution of the market place & town hall typology. The market provides a framework for the inhabitants of Bath to build a community within the city. The ground planes, relating to the general masses, join the separated grounds & places with Bath’s centre. The chamber acts symbolically as a celebratory democratic object & physically as the portal between the artificial & natural grounds of Bath. It expresses political transparency through the structure & provides a platform for civic ritual & festival.
ARCHITECTURE | 20
DIAGRAM & COMPOSITION The project developed through composition & relationship studies in sketch & model form. The final outcome has a clear relation to its built, historical, environmental & philosophical context.
PROCESSIONAL ROUTE & DEBATING CHAMBER Strands, forming the market roof, connect the civic core to the city inhabitants. These strands become an artificial ground for civic ritual & festival & a place within the city for public congregation. The Chamber becomes the nexus point, from which everything is centred. It is the celebratory political symbol within the city. The elevated object acts as a physical portal between the city & the natural landscape beyond.
THE COMMUNITY MARKET With the continued growth of global commerce within the general city centre, this market provides a stabilising factor for the local community within Bath to regrow. The design diagram as a whole communicates the relationship & inherent power of architecture on a macro & micro scale.

REPOSITORY OF THE ETERNAL NOW
ROBERT WARE Royal College of Art MA Architecture United Kingdom
“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and Mammon.” Gospel of Matthew
REPOSITORY OF THE ETERNAL NOW The City of London’s security is obsolete. Terrorism is evolving. Cyberattacks threaten increasingly vulnerable digital data whilst technologies dictate that we continually rely on its ubiquity. The country’s economy thrives off global trade establishing the London Stock Exchange as a principal terrorist target.
ARCHITECTURE | 24
The Church of England invests £4.5 billion as donations from churchgoers decline, so an interdependent solution uses new technologies to 3-dimensionally print the volatile, digital stock market data in stone in a perverse regression, providing a prophylaxis to modern terror and bestowing mutual longevity upon both the church and the economy. My addition to St. Paul’s Cathedral celebrates the synthesis of religion and finance, continuously building itself in real-time using data from the 41 stock market industry sectors, physically archiving the data and storing it in towers which grow in relation to the sector’s success. The repository fulfils Wren’s unaccomplished ambition for St. Paul’s, incorporating a stark, securocratic exterior with a dynamic interior richly adorned with intertwining iconographies. The regressive notion of archiving data physically was ironically driven by technology. The realisation that our physical surroundings are now at less risk from terrorism than our virtual world led me to create a 2D data printer made from recycled printer parts and open source Arduino technology, which I used to write a code that could simultaneously draw data from the internet in real-time by simply holding a pen. To test the feasibility of replicating this 3-dimensionally I then built a homemade 3D printer from scratch, again utilising open source technologies. The affordability and accessibility of the rapid prototyper demonstrates the ever-increasing accessibility of 3D printing and its potential application on an architectural scale.
The homemade 3D printer made utilisng open source technology, and below the 3D model it produced.

Energy is used and produced efficiently on site through use of a mobile gasifier, hydroponic algae biofuel production and photovoltaic collectors. Energy is used and produced efficiently on site through use of a mobile gasifier, hydroponic algae biofuel production and photovoltaic collectors. Water is harvested and managed on site to meet irrigation demands as well as run through solar water heaters to heat the Arks hydroponics labs. Waste is recycled providing the site’s compost, partial heat demands and electricity through a mobile gasifier and combines heat and power unit. The project builds on a tradition of reinterpreting the original high street and marketplace typologies hybridising them with traditional and contemporary food production techniques - aiming for zero food miles. The vision is to harness the spirit, energy and entrepreneurship of the younger generation of local deprived residents. The building design facilitates natural ventilation through its module. Room distances are limited to 7m deep x 4.5m high. The research offices allow single sided ventilation on the facade, the greenhouse and middle corridor both incorporate ventilation intakes at lower levels and exhausts through the building’s roof. The building form facilitates north light conditions for both offices and corridor and maximizes the light received in the greenhouse area with a fully glazed facade. The concrete phase change materials mounted in the greenhouse walls are expected to function in a similar way to a trombe wall mediating large temperature swings in the greenhouse and transmittance to the rest of the building. The primary task was that the building should function naturally, resulting in the section’s profile and roof design. Once the primary principles were in place I approached the question of how technology could work to compliment the building environment. This included integrated PV glazing shading systems, window actuators and a Building Management System for the greenhouse management, Solar water heaters to provide extra heat for the greenhouse hydroponics water supply. Accommodating for a “plugin” design allows the deprived community to slowly acquire more technology when economic situations are favourable.

BETWEEN DREAM & REALITY
LOUISE BOYE ANDERSEN The Danish Design School Fashion Design Denmark
BETWEEN DREAM & REALITY My MA Project is about the contrast between dream and reality, and how that looks in a fashion context. The project is based on my personal interpretation of these two words. I’ve worked with lots of different printing techniques and other textile techniques. The graphic pattern of the dots in contrast to the randomness of watercolor splashes, is the key elements to these prints. The silhouettes of the collection takes its inspiration from classical clothing items, such as the trench coat, the shirt etc. through deconstruction I have implemented draping into these usually straight shapes. The combination of the print, the silhouette and the colors forms a modern, functional and personal collection of clothing. That has been made to suit everyday life. THE WALKIT CHILDREN’S REHABILITATIVE WALKING BRACE WAS DESIGNED FOR MY MAJOR PROJECT. IT WAS DESIGNED IN RESPONSE TO A BRIEF THAT WAS CREATED AS A RESULT OF EXTENSIVE RESEARCH CONDUCTED INTO THE AREA OF PHYSIOTHERAPY REHABILITATION IN ANKLE AND FOOT INJURIES IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2011.
The boot piece and base piece of the WALKIT brace fold out flat, as well as the inside lining and coloured front panels, for optimum transport and storage and also help to reduce the overall cost of the brace.
THE PROBLEM Injuries to legs and feet make up 61.1% of all sport and exercise-related injuries in Australia, with the most affected demographic being the 0–14 year age group. Despite this, children’s walking braces for ankle and foot injuries are expensive and hard to acquire, particularly in the Australian market. They also lack aesthetic variation and customisation, and only a small number of the walking braces include controlled range of movement ankle hinges. The controlled ROM ankle hinges that are available however are clunky metal pieces that significantly increase the overall cost of the walking brace.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN | 96
Controlled ROM Ankle Hinge allows a lockable range of movement between 0 and 30 degrees of backwards movement, and is operated by an external key used by the physiotherapist.
THE SOLUTION The WALKIT Rehabilitative Children’s Walking Brace provides a sophisticated and accessible solution to fill this need. It combines a high level of function and performance with an affordable price range. Through the use of a memory foam soft lining and in-built controlled ROM ankle hinge, the brace is adjustable and adaptable to the limb throughout the rehabilitation process. It’s flat-pack nature makes it easily accessible for the patient and medical practitioner, and significantly reduces the cost compared to other walking braces on the market.
WALKIT is available in a range of 3 sizes for children between the ages of 5 and 13 before they enter into adult shoe sizes. The inside lining of the WALKIT Brace utilises memory foam, providing ultimate comfort and support as it molds to the exact contours of the limb throughout the rehabilitation process. The outside shell of the brace has an in-built, lockable, controlled ankle hinge system to consistently regulate the range of motion, thus facilitating and speeding up the rehabilitation process. The WALKIT Brace comes with a range of different coloured front panels that can be

mixed and matched according to the desires of the child, allowing them to customise the brace as often as they like. These panels, combined with the overall playful and childlike aesthetic of the WALKIT brace make it appealing to children and not intimidating like a lot of current walking braces on the market. The coloured front panels, along with the calf and boot pieces, incorporate cut-out patterns that provide the necessary ventilation to the limb. The outside shell of the brace is made from recycled polypropylene making it lightweight, affordable, durable and sustainable.

ISHKE WATER PURIFYING DISPENSING SYSTEM.
JESSE LEEWORTHY Swinburne University of Technology Product Design Engineering Australia
The components have been assembled in such a way that the main electronic products are segregated from the water and mechanical components to ensure protection against condensation.
ISHKE WATER PURIFYING SYSTEM Despite all the negative attributes, popularity of bottled water increases by 10% every year. Ishke aims to reduce the amount of plastic water bottles effecting our health and environment by presenting a sustainable and convenient alternative. The Ishke system is designed to dispense purified chilled or ambient water into reusable stainless steel bottles. The dispenser is inbuilt with a six stage, reverse osmosis filtration system and wireless network connectivity. The stainless steel bottles are embedded with an RFID tag that facilitates cashless payment, communicates bottle specifications and user preferences. Situated in public areas, Ishke offers the convenience, taste and trust of bottled water, but provides a brighter alternative to the destructive plastic container.
Every single gram of plastic ever produced still exists, taking 1,000 years to biodegrade. 214 million kilograms of plastic are expended in the bottling of 89 billion litres of water each year. Plastic water bottles have a devastating effect on the environment, marine wildlife and on human health. In many cases 1 litre of bottled water costs over 1,400 times more than tap water.

It is noted that one-in-four children in Australia are overweight. Preliminary findings have suggested that knowledge and attitudes relate directly to the behavior of children and adults. Furthermore, primary and secondary research suggests that food preparation in the home will shift the knowledge, and thus the attitude and behaviour of children and adults towards wholesome food. Kik is an analogue kitchenware’s kit that facilitates social interactions of food preparation between children and parents to aid the change towards healthy eating habits, through an awareness and understanding food. This product aims to provide a practical way in which children and parents can continue the conversations relative to sociocultural and pop-cultural trends like ‘Masterchef’ and ‘Masterchef Junior’. Being an analogue system, interactions with the product are physical and involve both parents and children. These interactions provide children with the fundamentals of food preparation tasks like weighing and measuring, whilst highlighting the educational role of parents during the preparation of food by getting ‘kids in the kitchen’.

A holistic, process focused product design, resulted in what can be described as the only complete solution to accessing, handling, manipulating and storing cryogenic vials, with a strict ordinance guarding the prescribed ritual of use.
PROBLEM AND BRIEF Ultivo is an acronym for Ultra Low Temperature Innovative Vial Operator. This is a year long, 4th year major project involving 11 weeks of research and 18 weeks of product development, prototyping and user testing. Problems were discovered with the use of cryogenic gloves in labs, as their cumbersome thick material lacks dexterity, leading to misuse and repeated danger of skin contact with frozen surfaces. This can lead to long term neurological damage which will reveal itself with time. The goal of the project was a holistic, from the ground up re-think and re-design of certain products and processes in a sleek, smart and ergonomic package. The system was to be a cost effective alternative to expensive cryo-gloves, which resulted in using existing manufacturing technologies and tried material choices. Injection moulded ABS forms the durable, robust carrying device. Polycarbonate is proven to withstand the rigours of long term storage in cryogenic temperatures while the softer Polypropylene is commonly used across the existing internal and external threaded cryo-tubes.

PRODUCT OUTLINE Ultivo is a unique, premium cryogenic storage and management system solution. It is a product system designed to be used in biomedical labs, which addresses the process of accessing, handling and manipulating cryogenic vials stored in -80ยบC mechanical freezers. Together, all elements form a user focused ritual of use, which does not require the use of cryogenic gloves when retrieving tubes from -80ยบC mechanical freezers.
The re-design includes the Ulti-Box cryogenic storage box. The box is of standard dimensions and fits seventy seven 1.8ml cryo-tubes. The Ulti-Cap is an innovative interactive cryogenic vial cap, fitting existing internal and external threaded vials. The UltiHand package is an all new multifuntional carrying and storage device, with a collective of sub products which interact with all of the other elements. These Include the Ulti-Key
which interacts with the Ulti-Cap and the Ulti-Grip which allows handling of the vial with two fingers. Housed inside the Ulti-Hand is a double wall insulated dry ice container with a capacity for transporting seven vials Ergonomic and appealing shape, intuitive opening, highly visible and accessible peripherals and a double wall insulated dry ice container are all innovations which make this product unique and multifunctional.

Reach & Match is a Braille learning aid for both blind and visually impaired children to have an interesting exposure to Braille literacy. Through the sensory play of the design, they can obtain functional learning skills. More importantly, it develops a friendly and comfortable platform, which simultaneously bridges the cultural gap between the disabled children and other children. Through the innovative design of the sensory play, non-sighted children with multi-disabilities and even sighted children also are benefited from learning different skills such as motor skills, spatial awareness, logical intelligence, manual dexterity and verbal expression. The design objective was driven by the problem understanding in the society through the extensive literature review, the opportunity observations from the marketing research and also the observational research in Vision Australia. Key elements in the design explorations and ideations are mainly based on the observation of visually impaired children in Vision Australia and interviews with their parents and other professionals. They were full of ideas and there was discussion exchange throughout the concept development process.
Furthermore, the detail design interface was designed in consulting with the blind people and Braille teachers in order to achieve the most effective option before making the final model. In order to develop the full scale working model with the designed materials, the chosen materials were shipped from the overseas factory and custom made. The product testing was therefore able to achieve the best design outcome and show the most accurate result. A full set of prototype, composed of three different materials with three distinct manufacturing ways, are plastic, rubber foam and fabric. Different manufacturing methods were fully examined and carefully conducted with the right measurement. Finally, a design extension is being developed for creating a fabric version of Reach & Match, which helps to fit in the developing countries through local skills and materials. Provided with the same design features, it aims to provide an experience of life quality for them to obtain the equal opportunity of education. Functional skills are the first step for disabled children to learn alternative skills of independence and help them to achieve their full potential.

AMPHI - X DUBAI 2030 AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLE All major cities are clogged with heavy traffic due to insufficient spaces, yet little does people know that many water ways in major cities are unoccupied. It is perceived in the year 2030 vehicles will occupy these empty water ways & rivers.

The current designs of the amphibious vehicles are shameful, and should be executed much better than having a large hull underneath a car body, or water propeller sticking out from the back of the car. This was one of the key points in letting me take on the challenge of really blending both features of a car and a boat into an aesthetically appealing amphibious vehicle.
The clay model.

Most major cities are clogges with vehicles and the automotive industry are trying hard to deliver compact and small vehicles for those who live close to cities, yet nearly every major city in the world has a major arterial waterway running right through it. Instead of being stressfully stacked in traffic, we could use the rivers of waterways to turn every stressful journey into a pleasant cruise along the water.

SOUP
ALL THE PLASTICS PHOTOGRAPHED HAVE BEEN SALVAGED FROM BEACHES AROUND THE WORLD AND REPRESENT A GLOBAL COLLECTION OF DEBRIS THAT HAS EXISTED FOR VARYING AMOUNTS OF TIME IN THE WORLD’S OCEANS.
SOUP is a description given to plastic debris suspended in the sea, with particular reference to the mass accumulation that exists in an area of The North Pacific Ocean known as the Garbage Patch. The series aims to engage with and stimulate an emotional response in the viewer, by combining a contradiction between initial aesthetic attraction and an awareness of the disturbing statistics of dispersed plastics having no boundaries, which result ultimately, in the death of sea creatures.
