This event is very special because it not only offers an evening of fine dining and outstanding entertainment, but it also raises scholarship funds to help students obtain a quality education. It is a well-known fact that a good education serves as the foundation for a successful life, and the proceeds from the Black-Tie Gala assist young people in obtaining the education they want, need, and deserve. I congratulate the JSU alumni and friends who are being honored this evening, and I commend Jackson State University for its continued commitment to academic excellence. Greetings, On behalf of the alumni of Jackson State University, I welcome you to the first ever Black Tie Scholarship and Recognition Gala with the theme “Raising the Bar of Excellence Through Scholarship and Service”. I commend each of you in attendance tonight and would like to thank you for your passion and commitment to higher education and your generosity for our beloved Jackson State University. As President of JSU National Alumni Association, Inc., I know first-hand the positive impact that each of you has on this community and the overall mission of Jackson State University. During the course of the gala, I urge you to reflect on your commitment to Jackson State University and continue to promote its importance to our youth. Many thanks are due to the gala steering committee and the administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni of Jackson State University for your unwavering support of this gala. Inaugural Black Tie Scholarship and Recognition Gala “Raising the Bar of Excellence Through Scholarship and Service� September 21, 2012 Greetings, Mayor Johnson, President Meyers, President Woodard, honored "People of Influence", community and Jackson State University (JSU) alumni honorees, JSU alumni, community and organizational leaders, and supporters of collegiate education, WELCOME to the Jackson State University National Alumni Association's (JSUNAA) inaugural Black-Tie Scholarship & Recognition Gala! An elegant, informative, entertaining, and purposeful evening has been planned with you in mind. As a student of the W.E.B. DuBois Honors College of Jackson State University, I was granted a full, four year academic scholarship. This was the gateway to an intellectual exchange that changed my life and propelled my vision. Having the opportunity to learn from not only professors and textbooks, but from students of different backgrounds, philosophies, and political beliefs. Under the Presidency of Dr. John Peoples, and leadership of Dr. Maria Harvey, Dr. Leila Rhodes, Dr. Bennie Henderson, Dr. Spann, and others too numerous to name, I saw living campus examples of leadership, expertise, intellect, diplomacy, community commitment, and civic responsibility. The training grounds of JSU allowed me to experience independence, become a Student Government Association Vice-President, register to vote, lead the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, gain a love for football, sway with the Sonic Boom of the South, and observe national leaders such as Secretary of State Colin Powell and Rev. Jessie Jackson. It is because of this rich experience, that my husband, Robert E. Norwood, and I have not only taught our children, Gabriel X.A. and Mikhaella A.W. Norwood, the legacy of Jackson State University, but plan our estate giving to assure it continues. I'm grateful for my parents, Mr. Earnest Lee Wilson (posthumously) and Mrs. Earlene H. Wilson-Norris, for the foundation, and to Jackson State University for laying the building blocks for me to realize my professional dreams of becoming a physician leader at Henry Ford Health System. I believe every student who has the desire and gift to make a difference, should have the opportunity to do so. That is the reason we are all gathered here tonight, and why many families, churches, JSUNAA chapters, organizations, businesses, and individuals have supported this scholarship effort. Tonight's Gala's will raise funds to assist aspiring, capable students in achieving their dreams. Thee I love my dear old college home. These words ring so true for me. My love for Jackson State University began in 1985, when my sister, Monica Michelle Lewis, was a freshman. I loved coming to visit her and her roommates (I thought dorm life was the coolest thing ever). She would take me to various buildings and tell me about the campus. Five years later, I became a freshman at JSU and have been truly in love ever since. JSU taught me about me. It exposed me to people and personalities I may have never had the pleasure of knowing. It made me grow up. And I am ever so thankful for all the good times as well as the not so good times. Having learned the history and growth of my university gave me a heritage of perseverance and strength. If those before me could face gun-fire and violence to get an education, surely I could push past any obstacle that ever came my way. It is with those thoughts and feelings that I work for my university in my alumni chapter (Memphis) and that I choose to give of my time and talents to our Inaugural Black Tie Scholarship Gala. To have the opportunity to offer a student a chance to have a slightly smoother college journey is my absolute pleasure. I hail from a family of educators (over 180 years of combined teaching experience just amongst my father and his five siblings). I am so proud of that. And I want to afford other students the opportunity to create their own proud legacy within their families. I am looking to my son, David, to continue our JSU family legacy next Fall. In continuance of creating legacies, I am establishing a scholarship in memory of sister (1967-2002) for music majors who show excellence in academics. The first scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013. Thank you to everyone on each committee, to the volunteers and to our creative teams for working so diligently to make this event a success. Enjoy this night of dinner and dancing and know you are helping a student create a legacy.

Ed Gordon Hard hitting, inspiring, intelligent, honest, and direct. These are some of the words used to describe the style and approach of Emmy award winning broadcaster Ed Gordon. Known for his stellar interaction with newsmakers from the worlds of politics, entertainment, and sports his name is synonymous with the “big” interview. Gordon‟s knack for landing exclusives and his no-nonsense style make him one of television‟s most respected journalists. Now, as host of Our World with Black Enterprise, Gordon gets to display all aspects of his interviewing expertise. The weekly 30-minute program is a mix of one-on-one headline interviews with today‟s top newsmakers and celebrities, an eclectic roundtable discussion and profiles of some of the world‟s most intriguing people. This latest assignment just adds to the list of impressive positions Gordon has held over the years, including contributing correspondent for the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes II and contributor for NBC‟s Today Show and Dateline. Mr. Gordon‟s diverse style also makes him one of the most versatile people in broadcasting. He also hosted News and Notes with Ed Gordon, which aired on National Public Radio. Gordon distinguished himself during two stints at BET. He had many roles at the network including host of BET Tonight, anchor of BET News, and creator of his signature one-on-one series Conversation with Ed Gordon. Over the years, Gordon has covered many of the world‟s most defining events. From the historic 2008 Presidential campaign to the freedom of South Africa‟s Nelson Mandela to the beating of Rodney King to upheaval in Haiti and Cuba he provided comprehensive coverage. Mr. Gordon also provided up-to-the-minute reports on many other domestic and international affairs, including the tragic September 11th attack on America. His awards include the NAACP Image Award, as well as the prestigious Journalist of the Year Award from the National Association of Black Journalists. He has also been featured in many national newspapers and periodicals. The Los Angeles Times described Mr. Gordon and his interviewing style, as “forthright and commanding” Gordon is an alumnus of a special list, PEOPLE magazine named him one of its 50 most beautiful people. Gordon is also president of Ed Gordon Media, LLC, a multi-service production company. The Detroitborn Gordon earned his bachelor‟s degree in Communications and Political Science from Western Michigan University.
Marcus D. Wiley Marcus D. Wiley is a premiere entertainer whose class of comedy surpasses the status quo. Deeply rooted in old-time religion he offers a contemporary flair on Christian living. Wiley is best known for his masterful composure of music that moves your heart and truths that stir your soul with a signature style laced in laughter. This co-host of the Yolanda Adams Morning Show and Texas Southern University professor proves life is a journey best spent with a smile, and he‟s sure to bring many along the way.
Stan Branson Stan Branson, Industry Advisor, works as an entertainment liaison and radio coordinator. Branson advises first level management on industry trends and changes, secures sponsorships, R&B talent, and works as special consultant to the R&B Selections Committee. He has been associated with the Jackson Music Awards for over 15 years. He is the operations manager for Inner City Broadcasting in Jackson and the Program Director for WKXI & WJMI. A mass communications graduate of Jackson State University, Branson has been in radio for 26 years.

Inaugural Black Tie Scholarship and Recognition Gala “Raising the Bar of Excellence Through Scholarship and Service” Jackson State University Institutional Profile Founded in 1877 as a small college to train ministers and teachers, Jackson State opened its doors to 20 students. Evolving from a small campus, it became state supported in 1940 and gained university status in 1974. Now with almost 9,000 students, JSU continues to emphasize public service programs that will empower students to compete and succeed in an increasingly complex world. Coined as Mississippi‟s urban comprehensive university in 1979, Jackson State University is an Internet 2 School, fully wired with 3 super computers and several federally funded multi disciplinary research centers. Also branded as a Carnegie Research-Intensive University, JSU offers a full range of degree programs through the doctoral levels in the schools of Allied Health Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science and Technology, Social Work and the Graduate School. As the fourth largest institution of higher learning in Mississippi, Jackson State University is also the only public four-year institution in the central Mississippi area. The core campus of 200 acres is located in Mississippi‟s largest metropolitan area and one mile from the central business district in downtown Jackson. Several satellite campuses including the Mississippi Urban Research Center, a Health Sciences campus near the University Mississippi Medical Center, the north campus for graduate studies and the 20 million dollar Mississippi e-Center are auxiliary sites anchored at the four corners of the city with specialized studies for non-traditional students. Jackson State University provides its students - who are from nearly every Mississippi county and more than 50 foreign countries - with more opportunities to develop a competitive knowledge base with cutting-edge technology and meaningful research opportunities. As the largest producer of African Americans in computer science and the only institution of higher learning in the state with an accredited four-year degree program in professional meteorology, JSU continues to markets its niche in attracting a diverse nucleus of students that dominate the science and technology and higher-order science disciplines. The JSU College of Science, Engineering and Technology is a vibrant unit that envisions itself as a leader in science, mathematics, engineering and technology and accounts for 66 percent of all computer science majors in the state. It is a leading producer of competitive graduates and carries out its mission through its department and special programs including biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, atmospheric and general sciences. Also known as one of the leading Geographic Information Systems research installations in the region, the JSU facility was the first of its kind at an HBCU specializing in this emerging and specialized technology. JSU graduates more computer scientists than any other university in the state of Mississippi. The University‟s College of Business remains among a select group of schools nationwide accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate School of Business. It also remains one of only seven historically black colleges and universities in the nation to hold this distinction and accounts for more than an 80 percent placement rate for graduates in the workforce. And, tuition at Jackson State University ranks among the lowest for research-intensive institutions in Southern states according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The unique partnerships with the John C. Stennis Space Center and the Office of Naval Research translate into one-of-a-kind laboratories as demonstrated by the GeoSpatial Visualization and Research Center and the NASA Teacher Resource Center. Recently designated as a census information center, the Mississippi Urban Research Center also focuses on demographic data trends and analysis on a myriad of issues related to urban populations. The annual Computational Chemistry Conference also markets JSU as a trend-leader in molecular biology research and the only such gathering of internationally recognized experts in theoretical chemistry. External funding at Jackson State exceeded $102 million over the past two years for research infrastructure and sponsored programs. All of the research funding at JSU supports exciting studies utilizing the most advanced technologies. Under the administration of its 9th president, Ronald Mason, Jr., the University has embarked upon a 10-year urban vision - e-City, which will transform the west Jackson area into a 21st century community that fosters technological capacity and economic growth. Vision 2020, an innovative learning model, has transformed the University‟s academic enterprise by consolidating seven schools into five colleges. One of the outcomes of Vision 2020 will be the preparation of its students as discoverers of knowledge. In January of 2011, Jackson State announced the appointment of its 10th president, Dr. Carolyn Meyers. “Dr. Meyers impressed us with her outstanding educational and professional background as well as her passion for Jackson State University,” said Terry Woodard, co-chair of the Campus Search Advisory Committee and president of the Jackson State University National Alumni Association. “She understands where we have been and how far we can go in the future. We, the alumni, are on board and ready to work in collaboration with Dr. Meyers and her team.” While anticipating our 135th Anniversary celebration, Jackson State University continues to position itself among the premiere institutions of higher learning in the nation. Jackson State has endured and thrived through remarkable feats and emerges as a catalyst for bench-marking higher education in the state of Mississippi and the nation. Despite a three-year tuition increase, the enrollment of nearly 8,500 students is one of the highest enrollments in University history and remains a cost-efficient and competitive bargain for students in the Southeastern region. 2012 Alumnus of the Year Vera Banks Watson Vera Banks Watson is a 1972 and 1976 graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Watson is currently employed by the Clinton Public School District where she has worked for 35 years including a current stint as president of the Clinton Association of Educators. She also serves as adjunct professor in the department of Education and Human Development at Jackson State University. Watson has served as an active member in numerous organizations throughout her career. She is a past board member of the Mississippi Association of Educators; Past President of the Jackson-Hinds Alumni Chapter of Jackson State University where she served 2 terms; Life Member of the Jackson State University National Alumni Association; Past First Vice-President of the JSU National Alumni Association; Past Board Member of the Blue Bengal Athletic Association, Incorporated; and President of the Jackson District Missionary Baptist Association. She currently serves as the Mississippi Regional Vice President of the JSU National Alumni Association. Watson‟s community service activities include membership at the McRaven Hill Missionary Baptist Church; the League of Women Voters; Past President and current board member of the Clinton Christian Community Corporation; Board Member of the Mississippi Assocation for the Preservation of the Smith Robertson Museum and Alamo Theater; and Secretary of the Mississippi Coalition on Black Higher Education.
Hall of Fame Katherine Cage Katherine Cage is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and currently resides in Houston, Texas. She is a 1985 graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. She is a 25-year civil servant and is employed as a Supervisory Auditor with the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Natural Resources Revenue, Texas Audit and Compliance Office. In 2010, Cage was selected as the Alumnus of the Year and has recently been inducted into the Hall of Fame by the JSU National Alumni Association. She has held numerous positions within the alumni association. Cage has served as a board member, national reporter, national secretary, regional vice president, and has been elected the third time as the treasurer. At the local level, she has served as reporter, secretary, and treasurer of the Houston Area Alumni Chapter. Cage has worked on numerous committees in the alumni association, including Budget, Constitution and By-Laws, Biennial Conference, and Homecoming. She is a life member of the JSU National Alumni Association and a member of the Thousand Dollar, Second Century and President‟s Gift Clubs at Jackson State University.

Tarita Benson Davis Tarita Benson Davis is a 1985 graduate of Jackson State University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, the former JSU cheerleader and 2nd alternate to Miss JSU is currently the Americas Regional Credit Manager for Shell Chemical Corporation. Davis has worked in various accounting/finance functions at Shell for over 27 years. Her background includes management and leadership roles within Downstream, Treasury, Auditing, Retirement Funds, Planning and Appraisal, and Accounts Payable. She also has extensive experience in various finance/accounting operations. Davis is a Certified International Credit Professional and a member of the Finance, Credit and International Business Association. She is a founding partner and chief financial officer of PR Healthcare Management Services, LLC. Davis is actively involved in the Shell Black Networking Group (SBNG) where she serves on the board as advisor of the Community/Social Investment Committee. She also has served as a recruiter on behalf of Shell Oil Company at Jackson State University, Prairie View A&M University and the University of Michigan where she was instrumental in recruiting qualified students for employment in the areas of accounting, finance, business and engineering. Davis has received numerous awards and recognition throughout her career. She is a life member of the JSU National Alumni Association where she has served and held numerous positions both locally and nationally, including the position as the Southwest Regional Vice President. Davis was selected as the Alumnus of the year in 2011 and has recently been inducted into the Hall of Fame by the JSU National Alumni Association. She is a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a community service organization committed to public service. Always committed to giving back to her alma mater, Davis has recently been inducted into the Jackson State University‟s President‟s Club.
Darryl Templeton Pilate Darryl Templeton Pilate is a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He is a 1980 graduate of Jackson State University with a degree in Business Management. He currently resides in two locations: Houston, TX and Chicago, IL. Pilate holds dual alumni membership in the JSU Houston National Alumni Association and the Chicago Alumni Chapter where he has held various appointed positions. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Jackson State University Development Foundation. While having a very rewarding career in financial services, Pilate has lived in Houston, Dallas, New York and Chicago during his 32-year financial services career. He is currently a Senior Manager at JP Morgan Chase and is responsible for deposit operations in Chicago and Milwaukee. Pilate‟s successful career has provided him an opportunity to be a consistent financial supporter of Jackson State University. He and his wife, LaVerne, have established The Darryl and LaVerne Pilate Business Leadership Endowment for $100,000. For many years, he has also focused his attention on supporting Jackson State University by providing internship and management development program opportunities for JSU graduating seniors. Pilate strongly believes that his rewards and opportunities have been because of his faith in God, his family, and Jackson State University.

Community Service Reverend Barron Banks Reverend Barron Banks is a native of Tchula, Mississippi. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education from Jackson State University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Pittsburg Theological Seminary. He also furthered his education at Mississippi State University in Guidance and Counseling. Banks is employed with Jackson State University as an adjunct professor of Philosophy and Religion and was previously employed at JSU as the Coordinator of Community and Faith-Based Relations in the Alumni Affairs Department. Banks has served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the 100 Concerned Clergy For A Better Jackson; Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Hinds County Human Resource Agency; and the Planning Board for the City of Jackson. He has served eight years as Election Commissioner for the City of Jackson representing Ward 6. His experience also includes serving on various other boards, assisting in student recruitment and scholarship support for JSU and coordinating philosophy forums in the History and Philosophy Department. Banks has worked for numerous causes, including race relations, crime prevention and racial profiling. He has marched with James Meredith and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from Canton to Tougaloo, Mississippi. Most recently, he was presented the Community Service Award in the area of faith-based relations from New Horizon International ministries. Banks is Supply Pastor in Church Renewal at the Pineview Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is an active member and Chaplain of the JSU National Alumni Association and a member of the Jackson-Hinds Alumni Chapter. An avid financial supporter of JSU, Banks is a member of the Clay-Lackey Society.
Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey Dr. Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey was born in Mexico, the daughter of a journalist, oldest of five children. She is a first generation college graduate with degrees from Texas Western College, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Arizona at Tucson, and Jackson State University. She spent two summers at Harvard University as a visiting scholar. Dr. Harvey is a full professor in the English and Modern Foreign Language Department and Associate Dean of the W. E. B. Du Bois Honors College in Undergraduate Studies. In 1980, she founded the W.E. B. DuBois Honors College under the direction of President Emeritus, Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr. Dr. Harvey has been at Jackson State University since 1970. She is an educator, scholar, a recruiter of high achieving high school students, an innovator who has involved and led students in productive activities which include the Social Service Club; Dr. Harvey‟s Dance Troup; the Political Club Committee of 82; the Honor Society for freshmen that later became the Honor Society of Alpha Lambda Delta; and numerous voter registration drives. A Jackson State University Yearbook was dedicated to her in the early years. She was presented the Teacher of the Year Award in 1978, and her name appears in twenty plus Who‟s Who publications. Dr. Harvey is a published author with a book and numerous articles to her credit. The degree and commitment to the education of her students is exceptional, as is her love for the students. She considers them her plaques and awards, especially as they move on and earn graduate and professional degrees. Her son, Rogelio V. Solis, a photojournalist, is a Jackson State University graduate.

Terry Scott Terry Scott is a 1977 graduate of Jackson State University and life member of the JSU National Alumni Association. He is also a member of the JSU New Orleans Metro Alumni Chapter where he currently serves as the First Vice President. He chairs the Fund-raising and Membership committees for the Chapter.
Scott is president of Scott Management Team, Inc., where he and his wife, Lorraine, own two McDonald's restaurants in the Greater New Orleans area. As a business owner, Scott has received many professional accolades that include being the first African-American Branch Manager for the Computer Science Corporation Collections Division. He also received recognition and awards for his success in the McDonald‟s system. Scott contributes funds for scholarships to numerous organizations including the New Orleans Alumni Chapter, the JSU National Alumni Association, the JSU Development Foundation, the Xavier University Scholarship Fund (promoting entrepreneurship) and the United Negro College Fund. Always willing to help others, Scott sponsors and co hosts a local radio show every week from the lobby of one of his restaurants. The show, entitled “Small Business Thursdays,” allows business and non-profit organizations free air time to publicize their business or event. Scott also uses his medium to promote Jackson State University and to recruit alumni for the New Orleans Alumni Chapter. Serving on the Mayor's Workforce Investment Board is one of Scott‟s proudest accomplishments. As a member of the board, he is instrumental in creating training and jobs for individuals and awards contracts which further promotes the growth of business.
Young Alumni Achievement Ms. Starla Adams Starla Adams graduated from Jackson State University in 1999 with a bachelor‟s degree in Finance. She immediately returned to Chicago and joined the Chicago Alumni Chapter, and began to share her talents and expertise to implement the chapter‟s goals and objectives. Working with the Chicago Alumni Chapter is a passion for Starla. She has served as the chair of the scholarship committee. She also actively assists in the recruitment of students to attend JSU and serves as a mentor for the incoming freshmen students. Adams is currently employed with The Randolph Group, a private investment family holding company where she serves as the Operations Manager. She provides leadership and support to company executives, including the president, vice president, and managing director. Adams has consistently demonstrated strong leadership skills. She has all of the characteristics of a great leader, including the ability to energize and motivate other members when planning programs and events. The members of the Chicago Alumni Chapter have a high level of respect for her work ethics and consider her a valuable asset to the chapter.

Lori Jackson Lori Jackson is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She serves as the Associate Director of Campus Life at Jackson State University. She received a B.S. in Speech Pathology and M.S. in Guidance and Counseling from Jackson State. Jackson‟s matriculation at Jackson State encompassed many facets of campus life. She was active in the JSU Student Government Association, elected Miss Sophomore Class 1996-1997, Dean‟s List Scholar; Who‟s Who Among American Colleges and Universities; Junior Class Vice President; President of JSU‟s modeling squad and member of JSU Pathfinders, (Jackson State‟s first student mentoring organization). During her senior year, Jackson reigned as Miss Jackson State University from 1998 to 1999. Jackson is actively involved within her community. She gives her time with various community organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, where she has chaired the Annual Women Build project for the past ten years; Jackson Zoological Park Advisory Board; Jackson State University National Alumni Association (National and Jackson-Hinds Chapter Lifetime Member, Mississippi Regional Vice President in 2003). Jackson was recognized by the Mississippi Business Journal as one of their 2008 Top 40 Under 40 honorees and in 2010 was named one of Mississippi‟s Top 50 Leading Business Women. She is a member of the Jackson (MS) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Junior League of Jackson, 2006 to 2007 graduate of Leadership Greater Jackson and served as President of Leadership Greater Jackson Alumni Association 2009 to 2011 and a 2011 graduate of Leadership Mississippi. This past spring, she was awarded the Inaugural “Woman of the Year Award” for the 2012 Women‟s Emphasis Week sponsored by the Student Government Association. Jackson‟s most recent accomplishment is her recognition from Jackson State University as the first recipient of the “JSU Public Servant of the Year Award” during the inaugural One JSU Excellence Awards Ceremony.
Tonia Devett Johnson Tonia Devett Johnson is a native of Butler, Alabama. She received her bachelor‟s degree in Social Work from Texas Southern University and graduated from Jackson State University in 2010 with a master‟s in Social Work. She currently is pursuing her Ph.D. in Multidisciplinary Human Services with Capella University. Committed to making a positive change in lives, Johnson has worked in the Social Services field for over 15 years. Her background includes working with the homeless, HIV positive and mentally ill individuals, substance abusers and Gay and Lesbian and Transgender populations. Johnson is employed with the State of Texas working as a Clinical Social Worker. She is an active member of the National Association of Black Social Workers, the NAACP, and the Houston Area Urban League. Tonia is currently a member of the JSU Houston Area Alumni Chapter where she serves as secretary.

Monica Sanae Lewis Monica Sanae Lewis is a native of Carthage, Mississippi and now resides in Madison, Mississippi. She is a 2002 honors graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor‟s degree in Business Administration and Marketing. She also received a Master‟s degree in Business Administration from Belhaven University and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Education with an emphasis on Adult Studies. Lewis is a charter member of the JSU Madison County Alumni Chapter where she currently serves as chapter secretary. She also serves on many committees and assists with various projects within the chapter. She is the founder of the “True Blue” JSU scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen attending Jackson State University from the Leake County School district. Lewis is deeply involved in her church as well as local community functions. Lewis also volunteers and mentors with Youth Community Action Group, a non-profit organization that provides services for at-risk youth, which includes tutoring, mentoring, economical skills, spiritual awareness, cultural enhancement as well as youth leadership training. She has been a participant since 2002 and has been instrumental in spearheading many new programs for the organization. Lewis is employed with AT&T Telecommunications where she is an Account Executive over the Southeast Region. She is also the proud mother of an eight-year-old son, Ashton.
David Robinson, Jr. David Robinson Jr., is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. He is a 2001 Industrial Technology graduate from Jackson State University and is employed as the Outreach Coordinator for the Dallas County Community College District. His role in the district involves supporting and implementing plans and programs centered on the recruitment and retention of minority males. David is the Creator of the “Aiming for the Stars” Academic Bowl which serves African-American males in grades 4 through 8. Robinson is the College Liaison for the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy in Dallas, an All-Boys Talented and Gifted Magnet School that serves grades 6 through 12. He previously served as Academic Recruiter in the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment for Jackson State University from 2003 until 2007. Some of Robinson‟s current activities and accomplishments include: 2009 Collaborative Partner Award Recipient; 2010 Higher Education Award Recipient; Recruitment Chair of the Minority Male Initiative; Co-Chair of Project Manhood Leadership Institute; Committee Advisory Board Member for Project Still I Rise Mentoring Group; and Vice President for the JSU Dallas-Ft. Worth Alumni Chapter. Robinson is an active member of the Delta Phi Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Ilynnette W. Ross Ilynnette W. Ross is a 2000 graduate of Jackson State University. She is a wife, educator and singer and songwriter. Her proudest achievements to date are The BRCA37 Project, a breast cancer inspirational album authored by her along with her sister, Iris W. Banks and the non-profit organization of her sister, the IDA-CLAREWAR Against Breast Cancer Foundation. This foundation funds BRCA testing for individuals who are eligible for testing but cannot afford the cost. Ross currently resides in Lilburn, Georgia, where she has taught high school English courses for the last eleven years.
Courtney J. Young Dr. Courtney J. Young, a native of Greenwood, Mississippi, is a 2005 graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. During her matriculation at Jackson State University she participated in several activities. She was a student in the STARGE program in the School of Science and Technology where she conducted research and presented at several major conferences during her studies. She also was a member of the Honors program, JSU Softball team, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Organization. Since graduation, Dr. Young has graduated from three graduate programs: (1) Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham; (2) Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University; and (3) Doctor of Nursing Practice from Vanderbilt University. Her doctoral studies included developing a theoreticallybased HIV risk assessment tool for African American women. She practices as a Family Nurse Practitioner in both primary care as well as with HIV positive patients. She serves Jackson State University as the treasurer for the Nashville, Tennessee Alumni Chapter.

Distinguished Leadership Barbara Martin Blackmon Barbara Martin Blackmon earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Jackson State University when she was 19 years old. She furthered her education at the University of Alabama where she obtained her Master of Science degree in Business Administration at age 20. She earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Mississippi and the Master of Laws degree in Taxation from New York University. Blackmon is a distinguished member of the Mississippi State Bar and the New York State Bar. Blackmon is Managing Partner of Blackmon and Blackmon, PLLC, a law firm in Canton, Mississippi, that does plaintiff and defense work, representing many Fortune 500 clients. She along with her husband, Edward Blackmon, Jr., are General Counsel for the General Missionary Baptist State Convention as well as City Attorneys for Canton, Mississippi. In 1991, Blackmon was elected the first African-American woman to represent Madison, Yazoo and Humphreys counties in the Mississippi State Senate. As a state senator, she worked to increase funding for all of Mississippi‟s state colleges and universities. She supported the Mississippi Adequate Education Plan to provide equity to poorer school districts and was a champion for senior citizens and children by being a strong and effective voice for sound health care policies. Blackmon was the first African American to be appointed subcommittee chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee where she oversaw over $350 million in agency budgets. Blackmon, in 2004, was appointed to co-chair the Jackson State University Development Foundation‟s “Campaign for Jackson State,” a $50 million fundraising initiative to raise private dollars for student scholarships, faculty endowments, and program initiatives. A generous philanthropist, Blackmon and her husband have received numerous awards. They made a generous contribution of $1 million to Tougaloo College, $750,000 to Jackson State University, and have awarded scholarships to more than 50 students through their private Foundation. Blackmon is a member of the Jackson State University Development Foundation‟s Charles Ayer Society, a recognition gift society devoted to encouraging exemplary levels of financial support among alumni and friends of Jackson State University.
Meredith Creekmore A native of both Sardis and Como, Mississippi, Meredith Creekmore works in public relations and is a member of the Board of Directors for Telapex, Inc., the holding company based in Ridgeland, Mississippi, for C Spire Wireless, Telepak Networks, Inc., Delta Telephone Company and Franklin Telephone Company. Creekmore attended the University of Mississippi where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1964 and her Master of Science degree in Education with emphasis on childhood development in 1968. Creekmore is also a founder and board member of the C Spire Foundation, a private foundation established to improve the quality of life of individuals in the communities that C Spire serves. The Foundation annually sponsors scholarships at all of Mississippi‟s eight public universities, as well as support numerous local community organizations. Creekmore currently serves on the boards of the Jackson State University Development Foundation‟s Women‟s Council for Philanthropy, Eudora Welty Foundation, University of Mississippi Foundation, and the Ole Miss Women‟s Council.

Creekmore and her husband, Jimmy, have been involved over the years in several non-profit organizations, including the Mississippi Museum of Art, American Heart Association in Jackson, Kidney Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and Stewpot. Creekmore, a generous philanthropist, is a member of the Jackson State University Development Foundation‟s Charles Ayer Society, a recognition gift society devoted to encouraging exemplary levels of financial support among alumni and friends of Jackson State University.
Charles Victor McTeer Charles Victor McTeer is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. In 1969, McTeer became one of the first African-American graduates of McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland, where he was named to the 1968 Associated Press Small College All-America Football team. In a career that spanned nearly four decades, McTeer acted as a civil rights lawyer who worked to protect the rights of African Americans, women and other victims of unlawful discrimination. He acted as a trial lawyer working on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants in some of the most controversial cases in the United States in diverse areas including civil rights, tobacco litigation, police brutality, defamation and mass torts. Civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, the Attorney General of the State of Mississippi, as well as other countless individuals, corporate plaintiffs and defendants have all been McTeer clients. McTeer has received prestigious awards for his legal work from diverse organizations including Operation PUSH of Chicago, Illinois; the Mississippi State Chapter of the NAACP; Thurgood Marshall College Fund for Professional Excellence; Dr. James Herbert White Preeminence Award for Philanthropy; Mississippi Association of Justice, formerly the Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association‟s Lifetime Achievement Award; and, the Mississippi Center for Justice award, who in 2010 named McTeer and his wife Mercidees, “Champions of Justice,” for their service in law, education and philanthropy. In 1995, McTeer became the second person to be awarded the Mississippi Chief Justice Award given annually to a member of the Mississippi Bar by the Mississippi Supreme Court for a lifetime of public service to the people of the State of Mississippi. McTeer and his family have made charitable gifts, including scholarships and grants to benefit disadvantaged people in the State of Mississippi and elsewhere, particularly in the area of education. In 2007, McTeer retired from the practice of law and now resides with his wife in Florida. A generous philanthropist, McTeer is a member of the Jackson State University Development Foundation‟s Diamond Club, a recognition gift club devoted to encouraging exemplary levels of financial support among alumni and friends of Jackson State University.

Bob Owens Bob Owens is a prominent Jackson attorney whose law firm has won national acclaim. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious professional and community-based awards. He serves on and is president-elect of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (the board that governs all Mississippi state universities). He is a graduate of Jackson State University and Florida State University College of Law. Owens is a partner in the law firm of Owens Moss, in Jackson, Miss. The firm is listed in Martindale-Hubbell‟s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers and is AV rated (the highest level). He is the past president of the Magnolia Bar Association and the Charles Clark Chapter of the American Inn of Court. Owens‟ accolades include: 1981 Jack H. Young, Sr. Award for the lawyer contributing the most to the profession; 1999 R. Jess Brown Award; 1993 NAACP of Mississippi‟s Lawyer of the Year Award; and induction into the Jackson State University Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010. National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame JSU National Alumni Association president, Terry L. Woodard is the recipient of the inaugural Legacy of Leaders National Alumni President of the Year Award from the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Incorporated. The national honor will be bestowed upon Woodard at the organization’s annual Hall of Famers’ Awards Luncheon on September 28, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia.
