PORTRAITURE, IDENTITY, & DESIRE: OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING DATE S :

July 21-24, 2-5PM FAC U LT Y : Michael Cuadrado TU ITI O N : $190 This class will explore the traditions of figure drawing from observation and its intersection with concepts surrounding identity and desire. Through drawing from live models, we will interpret approaches to the figure that date back to the early 16th century and late 17th century with Caravaggio and Michelangelo, and consider how these techniques can be integrated into our contemporary context. Students will be encouraged, but not required, to incorporate Ox-Bow’s encompassing land as it intermingles with the figure. Along with artists from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, we will look at present-day figurative work by artists such as Doron Langberg, Angela Dufrense, Tschbalala Self, and Louis Fratino and

examine a few of the many possibilities for figure rendering in contemporary contexts. BIO : Michael Gabriel Cuadrado

Gonzalez is a visual artist born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He received a BFA in Drawing from Pratt Institute in 2018. In 2017 he participated in Ox-Bow’s fellowship program, and in winter 2020 was a resident at The Wassaic Project. He now lives and works between Chicago, IL and Saugatuck, MI.

ENGAGING HANDS: PATCHWORK QUILT WORKSHOP DATE S :

July 21-24, 10AM-1PM FAC U LT Y : Christalena Hughmanick TU ITI O N : $175 This workshop investigates the democratic nature of quilting through its culture of open source pattern sharing and group work. The inherently social practice lends to conversations about its multicultural history and current pattern migration between international groups of quilters. Technically, it will explore ways that hand stitching fabric can create a two dimensional image or design. Methods include

structural construction through fabric piecing and surface embellishment techniques of embroidery, applique, and top stitching. Work created will be samplebased but necessary techniques to complete a quilt will be covered. All sewing levels are welcome and collaboration between students will be possible. BIO: Christalena Hughmanick is an artist working in textiles, sculpture, and performance. She received her Masters In Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012 where she is currently a Lecturer in the Fiber and Material Studies Department. Recent exhibition sites include Fernwey, Document, Triumph and Western Exhibitions in Chicago, SOIL Gallery in Seattle and a solo exhibition at PANEL Contemporary in Budapest, Hungary.

BRUSH UPON THE MEADOW: BEGINNING WATERCOLOR DATES :

July 28-31, 10AM-1PM FAC U LT Y : David Baker TU ITI O N : $175 Have you always wanted to try watercolor painting? Perhaps you’ve been frustrated because your methods in another

medium didn’t transfer well to watercolor. In this class you will learn some fundamental watercolor techniques, then immediately apply them in a painting. These skills will start you on your journey into this fascinating medium. BIO : David Baker is a visual artist who

specializes in poetic landscape painting, much of it done en plein air. His studio pieces are often reinterpretations of paintings done outdoors. His principal media are watercolor, oil, and charcoal. David is a lifelong artist and teacher. He recently retired as Art Professor Emeritus from Southwestern Michigan College. He earned his MFA degree from Indiana State University. Over the years he has mounted more than four dozen solo exhibits. David has taught at Ox-Bow since 2000 and is represented by Aveline Gallery in Benton Harbor and Rising Phoenix Gallery in Michigan City.

ICE-DYE IT! DATE S :

August 18-21, 2PM-5PM FAC U LT Y : Bobby Gonzales TU ITI O N : $190 Ice-dying is an easy to learn, visually complex, and beautifully unpredictable form of tie-dye. In this four afternoon course, we will dive head first into a DIY ice-dye process, using a set up that can easily be recreated at home.

7

Students will be guided through the entire process beginning with fabric preparation and dye color selection, to folding and stitch resist techniques, to finishing with proper wash out methods and the unveiling of our creations! Participants will walk away with at least 3-5 items to be worn on the body, hung in the home, or otherwise repurposed. Special emphasis will be placed on the up-cycling of old clothing, found textiles, and fabrics. Have something hanging out in your closet that hasn’t seen the light of day in a while? Let’s dye it! All dyes will be provided. BIO : Bobby Gonzales (b. Delran, NJ)

is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL, whose work explores the intersection of painting, performance, and photography. He received his BFA in painting from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and completed his MFA in photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Most recent exhibitions and performances include “Spontaneous Remarks” at the Chicago Artists Coalition, participation in Merce Cunningham’s “Field Dances” at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), group exhibitions at Das Institut fur Alles Mogliche (Berlin, Germany), The Milwaukee Institute for Art and Design (Milwaukee, WI), The Galleries at Columbia University (New

York, NY), Zurcher Studios (New York, NY) and solo exhibitions at Vox Populi (Philadelphia, PA) artist collective where he was an artist member from 2012-2014 . Bobby is currently the Print and New Media Studio Manager at Ox-Bow.

LOOKHEAR ZINE WORKSHOP DATE S :

August 4-7, 2-5PM Mac Akin TU ITI O N : $175 This workshop will focus on simple and accessible two-dimensional processes, incorporating word and image to create self-published books, pamphlets, and ephemera. Using collage, drawing, writing, and analog image reproduction techniques, students will learn a variety of skills to create, edit, and publish their own zines. Students will have access to the collection of self-published material at LookHear Library to reference for their projects, and are encouraged to bring reference materials of their own to share in the class library. FAC U LT Y :

BIO : Mac Akin is a semi-itinerant artist

originally from the east Bay Area, CA. He runs LookHear Library as well as WXBO, a zine and music collection currently located at Ox-Bow, where he also lives and works. His work lives in the window of space and time when you stop to smell the flowers.

SHAPE SCAPES COLLAGE WORKSHOP DATE :

Saturday, August 8, 10AM-5PM FAC U LT Y : Molly Markow TU ITI O N : $100 With its stream of endlessly reproducible images, materials, patterns, and information, the medium of collage has a unique history and vital connection to contemporary life. During this day-long workshop, explore

basic approaches to collage, including gathering and organizing collections of images and materials, and piecing them together in new configurations. Presentations of works by modern and contemporary artists will introduce you to the limitless possibilities of working with collage, while technical demonstrations and exercises will explore the material processes and concepts presented. This workshop will emphasize play, failure, and experimentation. BIO : Molly Markow is an

interdisciplinary artist based out of Saugatuck, MI and Chicago, IL. Markow’s work uses a playful approach to collage and assemblage to poke fun at idealized constructions of “nature” and landscape. She has had solo and two person exhibitions at University Galleries (Normal, IL), Terrain Biennial (Chicago, IL), and THAT Gallery (Laramie, WY). She has been included in group shows at Scarlow’s Gallery (Casper, WY), Oxbow School of Art & Artists’ Residency (Saugatuck, MI), Transpace Gallery, and McLean County Arts Center (Bloomington, IL). EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR DATE :

Saturday, August 15, 10AM-5PM FAC U LT Y : Nicole Mauser TU ITI O N : $100 This workshop is for the plein air enthusiast looking to expand their repertoire and for those curious to start painting outof-doors with watercolor and/ or ink on paper. We will depart from the traditional plein air landscape to focus on the details of natural surfaces and textures. Then, we will engage in experimental mark-making by improvising “brushes” made from natural materials that we will gather on Ox-Bow’s campus. No experience is necessary. BIO : Nicole Mauser’s paintings and

installations investigate tensions at play between color fields, materiality, and gesture within a language of abstraction. Her paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally at rK Gallerie Lichtenberg, The Arts Club of Chicago, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Carrie Secrist Gallery, Carthage College, and many others. Mauser was a HATCH resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition, Latitude Artist-inResidence, and a DCASE Artist Grant recipient in 2017 and 2018. Mauser was a co-founder of the Kansas City

Plein Air Coterie (KCPAC), a group of artists engaged in making paintings outdoors every week for over a year that culminated in public workshops and exhibitions.

LAYERED SELVES, ALTERNATE LIVES: WRITING WHO WE ARE, MIGHT HAVE BEEN, COULD BECOME DATE S :

Saturday, July 25, 10AM-5PM FAC U LT Y : Marya Spont-Lemus TU ITI O N : $100 Our lives are stories—with characters, settings, arcs, conflicts, accidents, decisions,

and more—and the stories we imagine about ourselves can help create our lives. Our pasts are also rich with experience and detail, which—whether true or adapted—can feed and drive our artistic practice. In this workshop, we will experiment with interactive writing and mapping prompts that invite you to explore relationships between place and identity, chance and choice, experience and interpretation, and equity and empathy. Developed by the author, these exercises serve both as tools for personal

reflection and as structures for mining your own life and speculating alternate selves when building stories. BIO : Marya Spont-Lemus

is a Chicago-based writer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator. Among other creative endeavors, she writes short fiction (variously for publication, performance, or exhibition), interviews literary artists, and is at work on her first novel. Marya holds a BA in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago and an MA in Art Education from the University of Texas-Austin.

She credits the deep, supportive relationships developed through informal writers’ groups as giving her the confidence to invest in and share her own work.

WRITING RITUALS OF JOY DATE :

Saturday, August 1, 10AM-5PM FAC U LT Y : Natasha Mijares TU ITI O N : $100 This day-long workshop will help makers of all kinds explore spiritual, religious, and philosophical approaches to the practice of writing. Participants

will question: what is sacred about our work? What is the everyday? By identifying what about writing brings us joy, centeredness, and peace, we will create mechanisms to help us harness our writing practices to explore ideas with confidence. This workshop will include discussions of short readings, group exercises, and independent writing and making time. BIO : Natasha Mijares is an artist,

writer, curator, and educator. She received her MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited at various international and national galleries. She has been published in Container, Vinyl Poetry, The Gravity of the Thing, and other venues.

FLAVORS OF VIETNAM DATE S :

Saturday, July 18, 10AM-1PM FAC U LT Y : Erin Chapla TU ITI O N : $80 In this marvelously fragrant workshop, participants will help Chef Erin cook through an approachable Vietnamese menu, as we explore some of the flavorful building blocks of Vietnamese cuisine. Our agenda will include an introduction and demystification of fresh Asian herbs, fresh-toasting and grinding a five spice to perfume grilled chicken, and a demonstration of Erin’s “secret weapon” 5-6-7 sauce; encapsulating perhaps the most quintessential flavors of Vietnamese cooking. Class will conclude with a lunch of the dishes we have prepared together.

SEASONAL IMPROVISATION DATE S :

Saturday, August 8, 10AM-1PM FAC U LT Y : Erin Chapla TU ITI O N : $80 Who hasn’t been seduced into buying a wagonload of fresh produce from the farmer’s market...but what to do with it once you get it all home? Chef

Erin will hit up the Holland Farmer’s Market bright and early, and together we’ll examine the morning’s bounty, discussing what’s in season, attributes and possibilities for each ingredient. We’ll cover some kitchen tips & techniques, talk about various flavor profiles and how to construct menus within them, and follow loose recipes, discussing how to improvise within them throughout the

changing seasons, all while we work together to prepare a delicious, nutritious lunch. Last year we constructed Erin’s Everything Golden market salad with gingermaple citronette, a tarragonmustard new potato salad with arugula, green beans & parmesan, and lemon-tahini roasted eggplant tossed with wilted beet & radish greens– who knows where we’ll end up this time!

BIO : Erin Chapla currently serves

as Ox-Bow’s Head Chef; she’s been spicing your food in the Ox-Bow kitchen for 14 years. Her enduring love of Asian cuisine has been nurtured by extensive travel, as she honed her skills cooking and eating across south & east Asia for several years. She now lives with her family on their 5-acre permaculture homestead in the Allegan woods, where she tends an ambitious garden, an unruly flock of chickens, and two wild little girls.
