Queridos amigos y deportistas del mundo del caballo, Otro añito más y lo pongo en diminutivo porque “vaya tela” la situación que hemos pasado en el 2020 con el maldito Covid-19 y las consecuencias tan terribles que ha traído esta epidemia, paralizando prácticamente nuestro país y el mundo entero. Nosotros hemos sido uno de los pocos lugares afortunados, donde se han celebrado acontecimientos deportivos y aunque no se haya permitido la asistencia de visitantes y espectadores y nos obligaran a suspender la última semana del Circuito Hípico del Sol del pasado año, sí pudimos celebrar el Tour de Otoño y la Copa de Naciones, única en España, que hicieron posible continuar con las competiciones a 17 equipos en la Copa de Naciones y a 39 países en el resto de Pruebas Internacionales, aunque con las restricciones de asistencia, vigilancia y con todas las medidas necesarias que garantizaran su seguridad. Este año hemos contratado, con la empresa Global Health, los tratamientos anti-covid para nuestras instalaciones y espacios como gradas, carpas, restaurantes y kioscos, cuartos de baño,

oficinas y por supuesto el acceso a nuestros boxes, para intentar impedir la propagación y tranquilizar a nuestros jinetes ante esta grave amenaza que prosigue afectando al mundo entero. Nuestra preocupación en este sentido, nos ha llevado a firmar este importante contrato con el que, si Dios quiere, estaremos protegidos, aunque sigamos utilizando las mascarillas y observando las recomendaciones que las autoridades sanitarias nos indiquen. Son muchas las obras y mejoras que hemos efectuado, como podréis comprobar los que habéis venido con anterioridad y nos sentimos muy orgullosos de disponer de unas magníficas instalaciones, que siempre serán mejorables y tal vez pronto podremos cubrir pistas enteras de salto, con grandes carpas que nos permitan la celebración de nuestras pruebas, incluso con fuertes lluvias o temporales de viento, aunque aquí no sean frecuentes. Asimismo, seguiremos intentando reducir la huella de carbono a cero y continuar como Espacio de Excelencia Ecológica, ya que en breve trataremos de producir nuestra propia energía a través de placas fotovoltaicas y así aplicaremos todo aquello que evite el aumento de la contaminación. 2021 SUNSHINE TOUR

The impact of COVID-19 in 2020 is something that will stay in our memories for a long, long time. Our day to day life has changed as a result of the virus, dramatically affecting all of us both personal and professionally and practically bringing our country and the world to a grinding halt. We have been one of the few lucky places, where sporting events have been held and although the attendance of visitors and spectators has not been allowed and we were forced to suspend the last week of the Sunshine Tour last year, we were able to celebrate the Autumn Tour and the Nations Cup, the only one in Spain, which made it possible for 17 teams in the Nations Cup to continue competing and for 39 countries in the rest of the International Events, even with the attendance restrictions, surveillance and with all the necessary measures to guarantee your safety. This year we have hired, with the Global Health

company, anti-covid treatments for our facilities and spaces such as stands, tents, restaurants and kiosks, bathrooms, offices and of course access to our boxes, to try to preble en la App)vent the spread and reassure our riders through this critical threat that continues to affect the entire world. Our concern in this regard has led us to sign this important contract with which, God willing, we will be protected, even if we continue to use the masks and follow the recommendations that the health authorities indicate to us. Likewise, we will continue to try to reduce the carbon levels to zero and continue as a Space of Ecological Excellence, since we will soon try to produce our own energy through photovoltaic panels and thus, we will apply everything that prevents pollution increase. NOVEDADES EN LAS INSTALACIONES DE LA DEHESA DE MONTENMEDIO La familia Blázquez sigue apostando año tras año por la mejora continua de sus instalaciones. En esta ocasión han vuelto a confiar en Geolastic y han optado por ir en cabeza del resto de los circuitos mejorando sus pistas concienciados siempre con la sostenibilidad y la eficiencia. Este año los trabajos realizados por Geolastic se dividen en dos fases. En primer lugar, se han encargado del mantenimiento de todas las pistas de arena que consiste, básicamente, en la alineación mediante láser y la des compactación de las arenas para lograr que las pistas estén en óptimas condiciones y vuelvan a coger esponjosidad y una nivelación perfecta para garantizar que los caballos salten en las mejores condiciones. En segundo lugar, han realizado la construcción de una nueva pista de arena en la pista 4 o Ratina Z con un innovador sistema automático de evacuación de agua de alta velocidad. Para conseguirlo, han puesto un drenaje con materiales que conducen el agua a gran velocidad y han abierto todas las secciones de 10

evacuación. Al tiempo, colocan unas válvulas motorizadas con sensor de altitud de agua que hace que automáticamente el sistema evacue a cotas de agua superiores a 0. Lo que pretende es que ante un clima muy adverso la pista reaccione automáticamente y muy rápido y no se tenga que esperar a que evacue el agua como los antiguos sistemas. Geolastic es la única empresa constructora de pistas que pone en marcha esta innovación. Además, al igual que el resto de las pistas que han instalado en Montenmedio en años previos, han utilizado el sistema Ebb & Flow, muy sostenible con un ahorro en consumo de agua de hasta el 70% (comparando con riegos tradicionales por aspersión o por goteo), y un ahorro energético de un 80%. Como siempre la Sunshine Tour a vuelto a confiar en Geolastic y ha optado por ir en cabeza del resto de los circuitos mejorando sus pistas siempre concienciados con él cuidado del medioambiente buscando las instalaciones más sostenibles.

NEW UPDATES AT THE DEHESA DE MONTENMEDIO FACILITIES The Blázquez family continues to bet year after year on continuously improving its facilities. On this occasion they have once again trusted Geolastic and have chosen to lead the rest of the circuits, improving their arenas, being always aware of sustainability and efficiency. This year’s work, carried out by Geolastic, will be divided into two phases. Firstly, they will be in charge of the maintenance of all the sand arenas, which basically consists of laser alignment and de-compaction of the sands to ensure that the arenas are in optimal condition and regain sponginess and perfect leveling, to ensure that horses are jumping in the best conditions. Secondly, they have built a new sand arena on Arena 4, also called Ratina Z, with an innovative automatic high pressure water drainage system. In order to achieve this, they have placed a drain with materials that conduct water at a high speed and have opened new evacuation units. At the same time, they place motorized valves with water altitude sensors that automatically

makes the system evacuate at water levels above 0. This means that in very adverse weather the arenas react automatically, very quickly and do not have to wait for the water to drain like prior systems. Geolastic is the only runway construction company to implement this innovation. This time round, they have used the exact same system, called Ebb & Flow, as the previous arenas installed in Montenmedio years ago. A sustainable system, which can save you up to 70% in water consumption (compared to traditional sprinkler or drop irrigation), and energy savings of 80%. Once again, the Sunshine Tour has trusted in Geolastic and has chosen to lead the rest of the circuits, improving its arenas, always taking care of the environment and seeking the most sustainable facilities.

Cada semana estamos en una competición y los caballos se comportan de manera diferente lo que te hace replantearte todo cada vez.

Número 1 del ranking mundial, tres veces ganador de la final de

la Copa del Mundo, medalla de oro en los JJOO de 2012, medalla de oro por equipos en Campeonato de Europa, son solo algunos de los más destacados resultados del que es uno de los palmareses más brillantes en la historia del mundo ecuestre. Conocemos más de cerca al jinete Suizo Steve Guerdat.

Ha sido una grata sorpresa saber que venías este año al Sunshine Tour, ¿cuándo fue la última vez que estuviste en el Circuito y qué te ha determinado a volver? Uff no me acuerdo cuando fue la última vez que vine, hace tiempo, pero no me acuerdo exactamente. La Dehesa Montenmedio es un sitio que siempre me ha encantado por lo que no necesito mucha motivación para venir, siempre me ha gustado estar aquí. Sé que han mejorado aún más, que los dos últimos años se ha profesionalizado mucho así que tenía que venir a vivirlo y me siento muy orgulloso de hacerlo este 2021. Como bien dices, estos últimos años ha habi-

do numeroso cambios y mejoras en las instalaciones, ¿qué te atreverías a destacar? Siempre ha sido un lugar que me ha gustado mucho, es muy natural, hay muchos espacios para que los caballos disfruten, algo a lo que doy mucha importancia. Pero si tengo que destacar algo serían todos los magníficos alrededores disponibles para disfrutar con los caballos, los caminos de las instalaciones ahora asfaltados, mucho más agradable tanto para nosotros como para los caballos para poder trabajar a gusto y, especialmente, destacaría el cuidado de las pistas de hierba. Es muy difícil encontrar hoy en día buenas pistas de hierba a pesar de que son mejores para los caballos y, la verdad, poder saltar en las de Montenmedio 2021 SUNSHINE TOUR

Traemos un equipo muy grande. En total 34 caballos, 5 jinetes y 8 mozos. Yo traigo a mis caballos más experimentados que el año pasado no pudieron saltar mucho y quiero que empiecen a preparar la temporada y, además, traigo algún caballo joven, en concreto unos 8 años muy buenos que iremos preparando estas semanas. La pandemia del COVID ha sido absolutamente horrible para mucha gente afectándo en todos los aspectos de la vida, en tu caso ¿dirías que te ha servido de aprendizaje de alguna manera a nivel profesional y personal? A nivel profesional poca cosa. Siempre me ha gustado estar en casa, pasar tiempo en casa y dedicar tiempo a mis caballos jóvenes. Tampoco es nuevo que mis caballos no compitan internacionales 5* todas las semanas, es algo que no hacía antes. Personalmente creo que esta situación nos ha permitido para un poco, respirar y darnos cuenta de las cosas importantes del día a día que antes, y con la velocidad a la que íbamos, nos pasaban totalmente desapercibidas. Este 2021 es año de Campeonato de Europa y Juegos Olímpicos y obviamente entre tus metas está ganar pero, con lo complicado de la situación actual sin prácticamente competición ¿cómo te vas a preparar? Bueno todavía estamos en una situación de incertidumbre, no sabemos qué va a pasar este año porque no va a ser un año normal. La idea es prepararme con un caballo para los Juegos Olímpicos y con otro, en paralelo, para el Campeonato de Europa. No sé aun exactamente qué planes o cómo me voy a preparar, pero el Sunshine Tour ya será parte de

ese proceso. Después ya veremos, poco a poco, cómo nos organizamos para intentar llegar de la mejor forma posible a estos eventos, los más importantes de año sin duda. ¿Sigues recibiendo ayuda o consejos de tu padre? Si le necesito sé que está ahí. No le llamo todos los días para consultarle qué hacer pero, si en un momento necesito algo de él, sé que siempre está ahí. Hablamos mucho pero no siempre de caballos. Sé que vas a ser padre este año, felicitarte lo primero de todo, y preguntarte ¿cómo crees que este nacimiento va a afectar a tu carrera profesional en el sentido de que pasas mucho tiempo fuera de casa ¿Te gustaría que siguiese la saga Guerdat? No me gusta planificar con tiempo, hago las cosas según las siento. Obviamente es una alegría agrandar la familia y ya iremos viendo como se van desarrollando las cosas llegado el momento. Sé que me va a cambiar la vida pero va a ser a mejor con lo que no es ningún problema, ya veremos como lo organizamos. Sobre si me gustaría que montase, se lo dejo a su propia elección. No es para nada importante o relevante para mí, lo importante es que tenga buena salud y haga lo que decida. No hay duda de que eres el mejor jinete y un ídolo para muchos, en tu caso ¿quién es tu ídolo y qué convierte a alguien en ídolo de Steve Guerdat? John Whitaker porque es el jinete al que más me asemejo en el sentido de que es un gran hombre de caballos, tiene ese sentimiento de natural hacia los caballos, ese amor hacia ellos, a la vez que tiene un brillante palmarés. Para mí es el jinete que más ha conseguido mantener la simplicidad de la equitación, la naturalidad de la equitación y a la vez ganar. Por esto siempre será mi gran ídolo. Un gran hombre de caballos. Hablemos ahora de tu ídolo entre los caballos. He tenido la suerte de conocer caballos extraordinarios, creo que el mejor caballo que he montado es Tepic La Silla pero el que más me ha llegado o más he querido es Jalisca. El más importante o que más triunfos me ha dado en mi carrera es Nino… como ves es muy difícil decir uno solo. Para que un caballo sea bueno no es solo el talento que tenga lo que le hace ser mejor que otro, sino que es muy importante su buen carácter y su fuerte personalidad.

But if I have to highlight something, it would be all the magnificent surroundings available for the horses to enjoy, the roads of the facilities now paved, which is much more pleasant for both us and the horses to be able to work at ease and, especially, I would highlight the maintenance of the grass arenas. It is very difficult to find good grass arenas nowadays even though they are better for horses and to be able to jump is those of Montenmedio which are spectacular, it is really wonderful. Who have you brought with you? We are bringing a very large team. In total 34 horses, 5 riders and 8 grooms. The COVID pandemic has been absolutely awful for many, affecting all aspects, in your case, would you say it has helped you learn in any kind of way on a professional and personal level? It has a little on a professional level. I have always loved being at home, spending time at home and spending time with my young horses. It is also not new that my horses do not compete international 5 * every week, it is something that I didn’t do before. Personally, I think that this situation has allowed us to breathe a little and realize the important things of the day to day that before, and with the speed at which we were going, passed completely unnoticed. 2021 is the year of the European Championship and the Olympic Games and obviously one of your goals is to win, but with the current situation in which there is practically no competition, how are you going to prepare? Well, we are still in a situation of uncertainty, we do not know what will happen this year because it will not be a normal year. The idea is to prepare myself with one horse for the Olympic Games and with another, in parallel, for the European

Championship. I don’t know yet exactly what plans or how I’m going to prepare, but the Sunshine Tour will already be part of that process. Do you still get help or advice from your father? If I need him, I know he’s there. I don’t call him every day to ask him what to do, but if I ever need something from him, I know he’s always there. We talk a lot but not always about horses. I know that you are going to be a father this year, first of all congratulations, and ask yourself, how do you think this birth will affect your professional career in the sense of spending a lot of time away from home? Would you like the Guerdat saga to continue? I don’t like to plan ahead, I do things the way I feel them. Obviously it is a joy to enlarge the family and we will see how things develop when the time comes. I know it will change my life, but it will be for the better, we will see how we organize it. As to whether I would like her to ride, I leave it up to her. Eamonn McGowan ENTREVISTA/INTERVIEW

Es muy difícil entender el Sunshine Tour sin su inconfundible voz resonando por los altavoces de la pista principal de Montenmedio. Ya han pasado 5 años desde que Eamonn McGowan comenzará a trabajar como locutor en el Sunshine Tour y durante todos estos años ha sabido fusionar a la perfección ese “sutil” tono irlandés con su alto conocimiento del deporte ecuestre convirtiéndose en una parte fundamental de los grandes premios disputados cada semana. Eamonn, ¿Cómo empezó tu afición por los caballos? Mi familia no tiene antecedentes ecuestres; sin embargo, desde muy joven crecí en las afueras de Derry en Irlanda y allí conocí a muy buenos amigos como la familia Coyle que están literalmente absorbidos por los caballos. Fue así como todo empezó. A partir de ese momento, desarrollé un verdadero interés y mucha pasión por los caballos, les ayudaba a menudo en sus cuadras e incluso en ocasiones viajaba a las competiciones con ellos. Pronto Daniel Coyle y yo nos convertimos en mejores amigos y él se posicionó como uno de los mejores jinetes del mundo incluso participando en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. Actualmente manejo la mayoría de los asuntos de Daniel y esto sumado a mis periodos como comentarista en diferentes circuitos a reforzado mi afición por el mundo ecuestre. ¿Cómo te surgió la oportunidad de comenzar tu carrera como comentarista y cómo recuerdas esa primera vez? Un nombre, Fergal Coyle ¡Aún le debo su parte de comisión…! Fergal me presentó por primera vez en un concurso en mi ciudad natal Derry hace unos 14 años. Recuerdo entrar en el palco de jueces en el Centro Ecuesrte de Templemore un miércoles y casi no veía nada por la cristalera del humo que había – Bob Barron adora fumar-. Estoy muy agradecido a Bob y Mary Barron por todas las oportunidades que me dieron en el evento que hacían todos los años por San Patricio. Fueron días brillantes. A partir de aquí se podría decir que me familiaricé mucho con el micrófono. He sido muy afortunado de contar con tanta ayuda de colegas que conocen muy bien el trabajo y de eventos que han contado conmigo como Arena UK y Lauren Fogg en Inglaterra que tanto me ha apoyado a lo largo de los años El trabajo de comentarista puede parecer sencillo pero la realidad es que detrás hay trabajo de investigación, conocimiento profundo del sector… 42

Lo importante para mi es que debes hacerlo sencillo. Menos es más. Un gran mentor para nosotros es el Sr Nick Brooks-Ward. Nick me dijo una vez “baja, habla con los jinetes, conócelos y descubrirás mucho más que buscando información en internet”. Esto me ayudó mucho. Siempre intento pasar ratos cerca de la pista de calentamiento, en entornos sociales, conociendo a los jinetes y a menudo se cuentan cosas de los caballos. Esta es la información valiosa que me sirve para que mis comentarios sean exclusivos o únicos. Sin embargo, Eamonn, tu trabajo oficial si no me equivoco gira en torno a la banca. ¡Estás en lo cierto! Me miro a mi mismo con tres trabajos y me siento muy afortunado. Trabajo en el banco más importante del Reino Unido y lidero equipos de personas con base en todo el Reino Unido. Además, como sabes trabajo como comentarista deportivo profesional y adicionalmente como gerente de un jinete profesional. Suena muy ajetreado, pero en realidad tengo tiempo de disfrutar de mis hob-

Poder compaginar trabajo y ocio es vital cuando tienes que equilibrar tantas cosas. ¿Dirías que hay alguna similitud entre el negocio de la banca y la industria ecuestre? Sí, hay muchos vínculos y paralelismos que puede establecerse entre ambas industrias. Por ejemplo, para mí personalmente, cuando se trata de liderar o administrar personas, cosa que hago todos los días en el banco, unos días con más éxito que otros. Comentar no es diferente. tigo”. Esta es en mi opinión una de las habilidades que todo comentarista debe tener. ¿Qué otros vínculos tienes con el mundo ecuestre? Hay muchos. Principalmente el desarrollo de tantos grandes amigos en el mundo ecuestre. En concreto me he basado en Lincolnshire cerca de Jessica y Harry Whall, quienes dirigen una empresa muy exitosa. Me encanta estar implicado en las competiciones especialmente en el salto. También he tenido mucha suerte de conocer hace más de 10 años a la jueza Emma Cook. Somos literalmente almas gemelas y pienso que somos muy afortunados de tener a personas como ella en la industria. Polifacético Eamonn, durante el Sunshine Tour también te hemos visto actuar como reportero frente a figuras muy importantes del deporte ecuestre ¿Hay algún momento o entrevista que recuerdas con especial ilusión? Sí, ¡me encantan los idiomas y cuando puedo siempre intento hablar español! Recuerdo mi primera entrevista en este idioma. Un día de victoria española en el Gran Premio pensé que sería buena idea poner a prueba mis conocimientos de Español y entrevisté a Sara Salom en el podio. Fue bastante difícil para mí pero realmente quería que funcionara. Mi amiga y colega Teresa Martin, que es juez, siempre me ayuda mucho y al final con práctica todo funcionó bien. How did Eamonn’s fondness for horses start? My family is not from an equestrian background however from a young age I grew up just outside of Derry in Ireland and met some very good friends, The Coyle family from Ardmore, who are literally steeped in equestrianism. It all started there for me. From there I developed a real interest and passion for horses helping very much on their yard regularly and often travelling to competitions with the Coyle family. Daniel Coyle and I soon became best mates and he has gone on to move into the top ranked athletes in the world and on the long list for the Tokyo Olympic games. I manage most of Daniel’s affairs and in combination with this and my regular stints on the commentating circuit in my role as speaker it has all bolstered my fondness of the equestrian world. From your love of horses to working in this industry, how did you get the opportunity to start as a speaker and how do you remember your first time in front of a microphone? One name here, Fergal Coyle. I’m yet to arrange his commission...! Fergal made my very first introduction at a gymkhana show in my hometown of Derry some 14 years ago. I can remember going into the Judges box at Templemore Equestrian Centre one Wednesday and barely being able to see out of the window – Bob Barron loves his cigarettes. I am most grateful to Bob and Mary Barron for all the opportunities they

gave annually at their St Patrick’s Day Show. These were brilliant days. Learning a new job and being so eager to do more. From here, you could say I became very familiar with the microphone. I’ve been so fortunate to have so much help from colleagues who know the job really well and equestrian venues such as Arena UK in England who have all supported me. Initially, speaker job can seem simple, you present and say goodbye, but the reality is that behind the scenes there is investigation work, meeting riders and horses, keeping up to date with what is happening in the competition ... The important thing for me is you have to keep it simple. Less is more. A great mentor of ours in the commentating circle is Mr Nick Brooks-Ward. Nick once told me, go down, talk to the riders get to know them and you’ll find out so much more than researching them online. This helped me a lot. I often spend time close to the warm-up arena, in social environments getting to know the riders and they often drop in snippets about each horse. You can use these nuggets of information to make your commentary more unique/specific. But this is not your “official” job. If I’m not mistaken, your day to day is based around the world of banking. You’re correct! I see myself as having 3 careers and I’m very thankful and fortunate for this. I work for the 2021 SUNSHINE TOUR

largest bank in the UK leading teams of people based all over the UK. As you know I work as a professional sports commentator and subsenquently to that I work as a manager for a professional showjumper. It sounds all so busy but I actually do get to enjoy some of my other hobbies and have a great social aspect to life. This is vitally important when you have to balance so many things. Would you say that there is any similarity between the banking industry and the equestrian industry? Yes there are many links and parallels that you can draw between the industries. For example for me personally, when it comes to leading/managing people I do this every day in the bank some days easier than others. Commentating is no different. You must get people to follow what you say and ‘take the audience with you’. These are some of the unique skills commentators need to have in my opinion. Obviously in any industry things can be political and sometimes bureaucratic. This is something that you have to learn to circumnavigate and not let it get on top of you otherwise you simply will not be able to perform What other links do you have to the equine world?

Nick once told me, go down, talk to the riders get to know them and you’ll find out so much more than researching them online. There are so many. Primarily it’s the development of so many great friends through the equine world. Notably, I have based myself in Lincolnshire in England close with Jessica and Harry Whall who run a very successful operation. I love being close to activities on the farm particularly jumping days. You’d be surprised at how much you learn from putting the fences up and down. I’ve also been really lucky to find a life long friend who I found in the judges box over 10 years ago, Emma Cook. We are quite literally soul mates and I think this shows just how lucky we are to have great people in this industry. Lauren Fogg and the Arena UK team have also supported me tremendously over the years. 46

During the Sunshine Tour we have also seen you act as an interviewer facing very important figures in equestrian sport, is there a moment or interview that you remember with special enthusiasm? Si, me encanta los idiomas y siempre intento hablar espanol todo el tiempo! My first Spanish interview stands out. One day we had a Spanish win and I thought it would be a great idea to put my Spanish skills to the test and interviewed Sara Salom on the podium in the main arena. It was quite difficult for me but I really wanted it to work. My friend and colleague Teresa Martin who is a judge helped me a lot with languages and with a bit of practise it all worked well in the end. If they gave you the chance, who would you like to interview the most and what would you have to ask them no matter what. Don Antonio Blázquez – is there any chance of a ride out from the hotel to Montenmedio in his driving carriage? What do you think of the new twist that has been given to the Circuit with the incorporation of big sponsors? Look, without sponsors, our sport would not be where it is today. We are very fortunate to have so many equine disciplines being put forward for another round of Olympic games, Senior Championships and more. The team at Oxer Sport in conjunction with the Blázquez Family have worked tirelessly to achieve a FEI program with over 1.9 million euros of prize money. That is amazing and testament to how sponsors see their involvement in the industry moving into the future. It’s critical that we continue to put sponsors and owners alike at the forefront of our stage if we are to keep moving forward. What is the atmosphere in the jury booth like? Only a few privileged know the ins and outs of the conversations that take place there ... Well to be honest it depends. I can’t divulge all of our secrets but at the Sunshine Tour I love the team we have in the jury box. I’ve made so many friends and we all support each other. It’s important to differentiate between a commentator and judge however we work together and that is the single most important piece. We do actually have lots of fun too. Fieles a su cita con el mejor circuito Europeo, el equipo de GDS Training visita por séptima vez las instalaciones de Montenmedio y como viene siendo habitual lo hace acompañado de uno de los grupos de alumnos más grande y destacado del Circuito. Por eso hemos querido dedicarles este espacio y ofrecerles una visión un poco más profunda de lo que es GDS Training y dónde está la clave de su éxito. GDS Training “es un centro de entrenamiento ecuestre, para todos los niveles, donde intentamos desarrollar el potencial de los caballos y conseguir alcanzar los objetivos individuales de cada uno de nuestros alumnos”. Estas palabras vienen de Vincent Voorn, artífice, director, entrenador y mánager de GDS Training junto a su pareja Jonna Fillippa Sundblad. Te sonará este nombre y con razón. Vincent es hijo del medallista olímpico Albert Voorn, con lo 64

que lleva el horse feeling en las venas, prueba de ello son su oro individual en el Campeonato de Europa de Jóvenes Jinetes en 2005 y su oro por equipos en el Campeonato de Europa Absoluto en 2007. Pero su pasión por el deporte ecuestre no le vino de nacimiento, a pesar de todo, su verdadera pasión era el futbol y no fue hasta que cumplió 14 años que le picó el gusanillo por empezar a montar. En 2005, a la edad de 21 años, Vincent ganó la medalla de oro individual en el Campeonato de Europa de joven jinete en Schaffhausen.. Fue ese mismo año, decidido a dedicar su carrera profesional al mundo de los caballos, Vincent empezó a montar para el equipo Audi y Eric Berkhof en De Margaretha Hoeve. Dos años más tarde, fue seleccionado para competir con el equipo senior holandés en el Campeonato de Europa en Mannheim con el Audi Alpapilion Armani, donde ganaron la medalla de oro por equipos. Debido a la consistencia de los grandes resultados y el gran éxito con “Armani”, fueron elegidos para representar a su

país una vez más, esta vez en los Juegos Olímpicos de 2008 en Beijing.

GDS Training, una realidad Jonna la socia de Vincent creció en Gotemburgo, Suecia y siempre tuvo interés por los caballos, deporte que practicaba principalmente por hobby mientras estudiaba Gestión de Eventos y Negocios. Se centró en preparar caballos jóvenes concursando en competiciones internacionales, donde conoció a Vincent. Gracias s su experiencia, encajaba perfectamente con el equipo Audi montando los caballos jóvenes y supervisando toda la gestión de la cuadra lo que le permitió unirse al equipo Audi en De Margaretha Hoeve y hacerse una idea a la pareja de cómo sería trabajar juntos como equipo. Vincent siempre había dicho que solo trabajaría para una sola cuadra antes de lanzarse a su propio negocio. Después de ocho años en el equipo Audi, Vincent y Jonna decidieron crear su propio negocio.

Con nombre para su negocio (valga saber que GDS Training viene de Golden Dream Stables, la empresa que Vincent tenía con sus padres muy renombrada en el sector), un nuevo propietario, la familia Kleer, dos alumnos y una instalación alquilada a la familia Van der Vleuten en Mierlo, el negocio estaba listo para despegar. “Fue un gran salto que al principio nos dio mucho miedo. Unos meses fueron peores que otros, pero en general disfrutamos mucho de esta etapa. Queremos agradecer a la familia Kleer (aún hoy involucrados en el negocio) que invirtió en caballos muy buenos y que permitieron a Vincent mantenerse en primera línea incluso como miembro del equipo nacional holandés”. Con los resultados llegaban cada vez más y más clientes y tan solo 6 meses después de que GDS Training arrancara, las instalaciones de Mierlo se quedaron pequeñas. En Weert, Holanda, encontraron el lugar ideal donde comprar su nueva finca tal y como siempre habían soñado. 2021 SUNSHINE TOUR

SUNSHINE TOUR 2021 ¿Cuántos caballos traéis? 40 caballos ¿Cuántos alumnos? Vamos 10 alumnos y como entrenadores Tom y yo. ¿Cómo os organizáis can tanto alumno en unas instalaciones tan grandes y con muchas pistas funcionando a la vez? Jonna hace un plan diario con las pruebas, pistas, horarios…Así sabemos qué caballos coinciden (nos pasa cada día). En función de eso preguntamos a las chicas si quieren ocuparse solas o necesitan que se les reorganice los horarios ¡En este caso la oficina del Sunshine Tour siempre nos ayuda muchísimo! Además, tenemos un grupo de WhatsApp con alumnos y mozos para estar todos al corriente durante el día. ¿Qué ofrece el Sunshine Tour a GDS Training? Es la séptima vez que venimos con nuestros alumnos. Para nosotros es sin duda el mejor lugar para empezar la temporada. No importa el nivel en el que estén tus alumnos, hay espacio para todos. Lo mismo con los caballos. Los caballos jóvenes pueden saltar en diferentes pistas, cada una con sus saltos, unas de arena otras de hierba… fundamental para coger experiencia. Por otro lado, es un buen lugar para el negocio de la compraventa. 66

Han pasado ya 7 años de esto y Vincent y Jonna se sienten tremendamente orgullosos de lo que han conseguido hasta ahora “Desde el principio tuvimos muy claro el concepto de GDS Training. Nosotros solo buscamos relaciones con alumnos a largo plazo donde podamos marcar objetivos y trabajar juntos hasta alcanzarlos. Buscamos un buen equipo, en el que haya lealtad y respeto máximo entre personas y sus objetivos individuales. Nuestro mantra: sólo no llegas a nada, juntos podemos hacer mucho”. Para Vicent y Jonna sus clientes están por encima de todo. “Muchas veces los alumnos quieren tener a sus ídolos como profesores, pero, casi siempre éstos tienen sponsors y propietarios que satisfacer, con lo que sus propias metas siempre van a estar antes que las de los alumnos. En nuestro caso, es lo contrario, lo primero de todo son nuestros clientes.” Y se nota. Si algo caracteriza a este equipo es la fidelidad de sus alumnos, no muy habitual en el sector. Cuando se tienen claros los valores, la visión y el concepto, y se es determinante con el trabajo, los resultados hablan por si solos. Tan es así, que desde hace un tiempo GDS Training cuenta con un nuevo entrenador, Tom Martens, ex compañero de Vincent en De Margaretha Hoeve para dar un soporte completo a todos los jinetes, ya sea en casa o en competición “Tom tiene una visión del deporte muy similar a la mía algo que para mí es importante”.

La amazona de la republica Checa dejó los estudios a los 16 años para dedicarse profesionalmente a la hípica y siempre ha vivido por y para los caballos con mucha hambre de victoria. “Mi principal objetivo con ella desde que empezara a entrenar conmigo en 2007 era mejorar técnicamente su equitación y no tanto que llegara o no al éxito deportivo. Así hemos creado una base sólida que le permitiera ganar confianza en si misma. A lo largo de estos años hemos llevado juntos un gran número de caballos jóvenes al primer nivel GP con mucho éxito. Ha participado en varios campeonatos y ahora nuestra meta es que pueda participar en los JJOO de Tokio. También me he centrado en enseñarle como funciona el negocio de la compraventa de caballos, que entienda cuándo es el momento adecuado para vender y así poder invertir en jóvenes futuros talentos.” Para Jonna y Vincent GDS Training lo es todo y definen su proyecto como “De confianza, leal y devoto. GDS Training is attending the Sunshine Tour for their seventh consecutive year and, as usual, they do so accompanied by one of the largest, most prominent group of students. For GDS, the Montenmedio facilities are unmatched in terms of European tours and cover every aspect of showjumping, making it the best possible location to start the year. This is why we wanted to dedicate this space to them and allow readers to gain insight as to what GDS Training is and where the key to its success lies. GDS Training “is a training stable for riders at any level. Together we try to develop the horse’s potential and achieve the individual objectives of each of our students.” These words come from Vincent Voorn, owner, director, coach and manager of GDS Training with his partner Jonna Sundblad Voorn. His name will sound familiar to you and, obviously, for a good reason. Vincent is the son of Olympic medalist, Albert Voorn, so he carries the horse feeling in his veins. Some of Vincent’s victories include his individual gold medal in the European Championship of Young Riders in 2005 and his team gold medal in the Absolute European Championship in 2007. Given his success, his passion for Equestrian sports was not his initial choice. At an early age, Vincent’s passion was football, and it was not until he was fourteen he got feelling of the family business. In 2005, at the

age of twenty-one, Vincent won the individual Gold medal at the European Championships as a Young Rider in Schaffhausen. It was this same year, that he determined he wanted to dedicate that professional career to the Equestrian sport, Vincent started riding for Team Audi- Eric Berkhof’s team in De Margaretha Hoeve. Two years later, he was selected to ride for the Dutch senior team at the European Championships in Mannheim with Audi’s Alpapilion Armani, where they won team Gold medal. Due to the consistency of great results and huge success with “Armani”, they were chosen to represent their country once again, this time at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

GDS, a reality Vincent’s partner, Jonna Sundblad, also worked at De Margaretha Hoeve. Jonna grew up in Gothenburg, Sweden. She always had an interest for horses and rode mostly for fun while studying Event and Business Management. She focused on young horses and did a few international shows, where she met Vincent. Given her experience, she fit in perfectly with Team Audi, riding the young horses and overseeing all of the stabling management. This gave the couple some insight into what it would be like working together as a team. Vincent had always said he would only work for one stable before starting his own business. It was after eight years at Team Audi, Vincent and Jonna decided to create their own chapter.

GDS stands for Golden Dreams Stables, the company name Vincent had working together with his parents. Since it was a well-known name in the industry, Vincent and Jonna decided to go by GDS Training, since the training part for riders would be their main focus. With a new horse owner, family Kleer, and two clients we decided to start the business by renting stables from the Van der Vleuten’s in Mierlo. ” It was a great leap that at first we were very scared. Some months were worse than others, but overall, we really enjoyed the process. We want to thank the Kleer family (still involved in the business today) who invested in very good horses and who allowed Vincent to stay in the forefront even as a member of the Dutch national team”. Since Vincent continued to compete as well as making a name for himself as a trainer, a flood of requests started to come in from riders that wanted to join their team. With the results, just six months after GDS Training started, the Mierlo facilities became too small. In Weert, Holland, they found the ideal place to build their new estate just as they always dreamt of. Seven years passed since creating GDS Training and Vincent and Jonna feel tremendously proud of what they have achieved so far. “From the beginning we were very clear about the concept of GDS. We only seek long-term relationships with students where we can set goals and work together to achieve them. We are looking for a good team, in which 2021 SUNSHINE TOUR

SUNSHINE TOUR 2021 How many horses are you bringing? 40 horses How many students? We have 10 students and as coaches Tom and I. How do you organize yourself with so many students in such large facilities and with so many tracks running at the same time? Jonna makes a daily plan with the competitions, tracks, schedules ... So, we know which horses overlap (it happens to us every day). Based on that, we ask the girls if they want to take care of themselves or need their schedules to be reorganized. In this case, the Sunshine Tour office always helps us a lot! In addition, we have a WhatsApp group with students and grooms to keep everyone up to date during the day. What does the Sunshine Tour offer to GDS Training? It is the seventh time that we come with our students. For us it is undoubtedly the best place to start the season. No matter what level your students are at, there is room for everyone. Same with horses. Young horses can jump on different tracks, each one with its own jumps, some made of sand and others made of grass ... essential to gain experience. On the other hand, it is a good place for the trading business.

We have achieved a lot, but none of it would have been possible without the loyal people around us.” As the GDS Training mantra goes “alone you can’t do anything, together you can do a lot.” And you can see it. If something characterizes GDS it’s the loyalty of their students and team members. When the values, the vision and the concept are clear, and the work is decisive, the results speak for themselves. In order to keep these values, given the increase in students, GDS decided to add a new coach, Tom Martens, who has been there for three years now. Tom was Vincent’s partner in De Margaretha Hoeve. With his addition to the team, GDS is able to give full support to all riders, whether at home or in competition. “Tom has a vision of sport very similar to mine, something that is important to me,” said Vincent.

Working with his students Among his eleven students, it is difficult for Vincent be able to highlight the progress of any one in particular because he feels that in all of them the daily work is greatly noticed, of which he is very proud. “All of my students are on different levels and have different goals. Whether they are winning a class, riding a course exactly as planned, or developing young horses in a professional way, it all makes me very proud.” But if he had to give an example of improvement, he would highlight the work that he has done with Emma Augier de Moussac. The rider from the Czech Republic left her studies at the age of sixteen to dedicate herself professionally to horse riding and has always lived by and for horses with a great hunger for victory. “My main objective with her since she started training with me in 2007 was to improve her riding technique and not so much that she would achieve sporting success or not. In this way we have created a solid foundation that allows her to gain self-confidence. Throughout these years we have brought together a large number of young horses to the first GP level with great success. She has participated in several championships and now our goal is her participation at the Tokyo Olympics. I have also focused on teaching her how the horse- trading business works, that she understands when the right time is to sell and thus be able to invest in young future talents.“ For Jonna and Vincent GDS Training is everything and they define their project as ”trustworthiness, loyalty and devotion. Últimamente, Setenil de las Bodegas se ha puesto muy de moda en Instagram y razones no le faltan: Es el mejor destino «secreto» de Europa, según European Best Destinations, pertenece a la Asociación de pueblos más bonitos de España y el conjunto histórico del pueblo es Bien de Interés Cultural. Pero su principal atractivo son sus casas enclavadas en la roca que llaman la atención a cualquiera. Cabe destacar que todo el pueblo está situado en un cañón gracias a la erosión del río Guadalpurcón. El río divide el pueblo en dos y ha formado él solito, con el paso de los años, esta característica forma de las rocas digna de estudios geológicos. Recomendamos visitar El Mirador el Lizón, el más famoso de Setenil de las Bodegas, debajo de la Torre del Homenaje y al lado de la casa de la Damita de Setenil. una venus paleolítica de 5.000 años que tiene su propia casa. Sí, como lo oyes y puedes visitar la casa donde se encuentra el museo que recorre toda la historia del pueblo desde la antigüedad. Did you know that the Natural Park of Grazalema, where you can find this charming town, is the place where it most rains in Spain? It is also one of the few places in Cadiz where it snows! Grazalema is a very small town which you can visit in a single morning or evening and which provides a lot of peace. In addition to its mountainous charm, it offers the best area to appreciate this park, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, a landscape that deserves to be admired, and we advise to do it from the Mirador del Puerto del Boyar or the Mirador del Puerto de las Palomas. It is ideal for nature lovers with an amplitude of trails to choose from for every age and level, which can be explored on foot, horse riding or by bicycle. Arcos de la Frontera

Este hermoso municipio de origen prehistórico se ha convertido en la entrada a la Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos y ha sido declarado Conjunto Histórico-Ártístico como uno de los referentes turísticos de la Provincia y conocido en España como uno de los pueblos más bellos de España. El mayor de los encantos de este pueblo es irse perdiendo por sus encaladas calles que serpentean por la orografía accidentada de su casco histórico. Sus calles estrechas y empedradas te irán presentando cada uno de los lugares más pintorescos como el callejón de los Arcos. Si visitas este lugar no debes dejar pasar el Palacio del Mayorazgo que data del sigo XVII y la casa solariega del Conde del Águila de estilo gótico mudéjar construido entre los siglos XVI y XV. Encontrarás también 3 conventos que merecen la pena ser visitados, aunque solo sea por admirar sus fachadas. El primero es el Convento de la Encarnación, después debes visitar el único convento de clausura que se mantiene en activo hoy en día en Arcos, el Convento de las Mercedarias y por último el Convento de la Caridad, un conjunto de estilo colonial en cuyo interior encontramos una iglesia que data de la segunda mitad del siglo VXII. Como es habitual, en torno a la plaza del Cabildo se concentra el casco antiguo, emplazamiento que fue lugar de adiestramiento de soldados y jinetes en el pasado y que hoy es una de las zonas más animadas de la ciudad y en la que puedes encontrar los valores monumentales más interesantes del municipio. This beautiful municipality with a prehistoric origin has become the entrance to the Route of the Pueblos Blancos and has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site as one of the touristic references of the Province as well as known as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. One of its greatest charms is getting lost in its white streets that wind through the rugged terrain of its historic center. Its narrow and cobbled streets will introduce you to each of the most picturesque places such as the Callejón de los Arcos. If you have the chance to visit this place, you cannot miss the Palacio de Mayorazgo dating from the XVII century and the manor hourse of the Conde de Águila in a gothic mudejar style, built between the XVI and the XV centuries. You will also find 3 convents that are worth visiting, even if it’s only to admire their facades. The first one is the Convento de la Encarnación, then you must visit the only cloistered clergy convent that is still active today in Arcos, the Convento de las Mercedarias and finally the Convento de la Caridad, a colonial-style complex in which interior we find a church, dating from the second half of the VXII century. As usual, the old town is concentrated around the Plaza del Cabildo, a site that was used as a training spot for soldiers and horsemen in the past. Today, it is one of the liveliest areas of the city and where you can find the most interesting monumental settings of the municipality. Castillo de Castellar

Medina Sidonia

Algunos la denominan el Balcón de la Bahía de Cádiz y posiblemente no les falta razón. Dicen los estudiosos que también es uno de los núcleos más vetustos de la provincia. Casonas, iglesias, castillos, conventos, parques, museo arqueológico y legado árabe se constituyen como uno de los Conjuntos Histórico-Artísticos, antiguamente amurallado, que más importancia tienen y cuyo nombre evoca tiempos pasados de batallas y conquistadores. Medina Sidonia se encuentra en la llamada segunda línea de la costa gaditana. Esto la convierte en el lugar perfecto para disfrutar de las vistas a una de las bahías más bonitas de España, la de Cádiz. Varias civilizaciones han pasado por aquí, pero nada más veas las murallas del casco histórico y los arcos de las murallas vas a retroceder a la época medieval islámica en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Y eso de transportarte a otras épocas mientras haces turismo es un verdadero placer. A nosotros nos encanta el Museo Etnográfico de Medina Sidonia: muy interesante si te gusta conocer cómo vivían durante los últimos siglos la población local. Ante la preocupante situación producida por los desastres medioambientales del Cambio Climático, Vetiver nos ofrece luz de cómo corregir algunos aspectos en el uso de nuestra tierra que nos ayuden a que las generaciones futuras puedan disfrutar de productos sanos y ecológicos en nuestro planeta. Vetiver es una planta gramínea de crecimiento vertical y de espectacular producción de biomasa, que con sus enormes raíces nos protegen de erosiones y limpian los vertidos que por ellas pasan. El uso generalizado del Vetiver en la agricultura nos permitirá: • Luchar contra la erosión y la pérdida de suelo fértil. • Recuperar suelos contaminados por agroquímicos como herbicidas y pesticidas. • Aportar minerales extraídos por la propia planta y acumulados en sus hojas. • Protección como acolchado o mulching. • Secuestrar carbono en cantidades muy apreciables: 60 T/Ha/año. • Ayudar al control natural de plagas. Asimismo Vetiver es utilizada en Medicina Natural y para la fabricación de perfumes y la hemos adoptado como compañera en las nuevas instalaciones del Circuito Hípico del Sol.

Planting Vetiver in borders and banks

Every day we are faced with the worrying situations and environmental disasters that are being caused by Climate Change. Vetiver is a shining example of how we may correct some aspects of our basic landuse and, how we can give future generations a chance to enjoy a healthy, ecological on our planet. Vetiver is a vertical growing, Gramineae (grass) with spectacular biomass production and an extensive root systems that helps to stabilise soil and prevent erosion. The roots act as a filter, cleaning out any chemicals that pass through. Agricultural use of Vetiver allows us to: • Fight against erosion and the loss of fertile topsoil • Reclaim land contaminated by agrochemicals such as herbicides and pesticides • Provide minerals extracted by the plant itself and accumulated in its leaves. • Soil protection, mulching, composting • Carbon removal from the atmosphere at notable levels: 60 T/Ha/yr. • Be used as a natural pest and weed control agent The vetiver plant also has other uses, in Natural Medicines and perfume manufacture. Si por algo destaca la provincia de Cádiz, una de las más auténticas del país, es por su maravillosa costa, con largas playas de fina arena y unos atardeceres dignos de ver. Pero también son conocidas sus olas para todos los amantes del surf y el Kite Surf. A tan solo 18 minutos de la Dehesa Montenmedio se encuentra la famosa playa de El Palmar con sus más de 4 km y las mejores olas de todo Cádiz, aptas tanto para principiantes como para los surfistas más experimentados. Te proponemos que visites una de las tantas escuelas de surf que encontrarás, sientas la adrenalina de deslizarte por las olas y, después te refresques con una buena cerveza en uno de los chiringuitos que se encuentran a pie de playa. El buen ambiente y la diversión están garantizados.

If you still have energy to spend after competing, why not try the local surfing, not only is it great fun but its also very refreshing! Cadiz province has an unspoiled and very authentic coastline. The beaches are fabulous and seemingly unending with fine clean sands. Wonderful places to watch the setting sun. These beaches are well known by surfers and kite surfers for their great waves. Just 18 min away from Montenmedio is the famous beach of El Palmar, it is more than 4 km long and has the best waves in Cadiz Province. The beach is suitable for both experienced surfers and beginners. There are various surf schools right on the beach where equipment can be hired. We recommend that you visit and have a go, feel the adrenaline and cool off in the waves, afterwards you can try refreshments offered in the beach- front bars and restaurants where a great, fun atmosphere is guaranteed.
