2
CARE was founded in 1945, when 22 American organizations came together to rush lifesaving CARE Packages® to post-war Europe, ultimately reaching 100 million families around the world.
Vision
Guided by its Strategic Plan, From Caring Comes Courage (202125), the organization is committed to bringing resources, talent, and expertise to unlock women’s leadership for a gender-just future – because the world is better when women lead, too. It recognizes that to lead change and realize a better life for herself and her community, every woman needs to be safe, healthy and have a dignified livelihood. It also fundamentally realizes that ‘business as usual’ is no longer good enough: this Plan challenges CARE to reimagine how it achieves its mission, inspires Canadian investment, and transforms the organization to be future-ready. CARE Canada has already made substantive progress in achieving the goals articulated in this Strategic Plan.
About CARE Canada
In the midst of these challenges, CARE Canada is reflecting its role as a humanitarian and development actor. Specifically, the organization is engaged in an intense reflection on the changes needed to decolonize the work of a post-war international NGO, shifting to a more sustainable, future-fit operating model, and modelling the change it seeks in the world.
Mission
Today, CARE is a global Confederation of Members, Affiliates and Country Offices in over 100 countries, and CARE Canada is one of the original members. As a dual-mandate organization, CARE is on the frontlines of humanitarian crises and tackles the underlying causes of poverty and injustice to deliver lasting change.
We live in extraordinary times, with the convergence of a climate crisis, complex geopolitical conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic laying bare a set of unprecedented challenges for our planet and its people. The sustainability of our planet is in question; structural, racial and economic inequalities and fragile political systems collide; and the pandemic has exposed and exacerbated deep structural inequalities in global economies, health systems, and societies.
