Job Brief

Reporting directly to the COO, the Managing Director (MD) serves as the head of a defined business unit, a large and/or complex country office, or a regional/integrated program(s) and provides key contributions to the growth and business development strategy of the assigned portfolio. The MD assumes full responsibility and authority on all aspects of the portfolio and, with limited oversight from the COO, works independently to achieve a defined set of qualitative and quantitative objectives and targets. As a member of the Corus Leadership Team, the MD directly contributes to the organization’s diversified revenue model, provides businessminded solutions, and engages/convenes both public and private partnerships for their respective unit, office, or program.

Roles & Responsibilities

Business Development Growth and Strategy

In close collaboration with the Strategic and Business Development Unit, s/he will:

• Drive the growth strategy for their portfolio, delivers and sets clear goals, targets, and metrics to measure the success and impact of Corus’ programs and initiatives.

• Drive the execution of the organizational strategy, ensuring that all activities and programs are delivered in line with the defined goals and objectives.

• Establish and maintain strong relationships with donors, private sector partners, and other external stakeholders to enhance Corus’ visibility and engagement.

• Regularly attend key meetings, conferences, and events, promoting the organization’s mission and building partnerships.

• Foster active engagement and inspires the enthusiastic participation of country teams in the organization’s external media relations initiatives, encompassing diverse platforms such as media interviews, writing, and external speaking engagements.

• Lead business development efforts, identifying and pursuing new funding opportunities, partnerships, and revenue streams to support Corus’ growth and sustainability.

• Develop and implement strategic fundraising plans, including grant proposals, donor cultivation, and stewardship activities.

• Supervise the development and implementation of a comprehensive branding and marketing strategy to enhance Corus’ reputation and visibility within the business unit/sector.

• Lead consistent and impactful messaging across all communication channels and materials.

• Monitor and evaluate progress against targets for their specific portfolio regularly, making necessary adjustments to ensure alignment with the organizational strategy.

• Ensure the business unit has the necessary technical and operational capabilities to achieve its strategic objectives.

Program Delivery, Quality, and Impact

• Delivers quantitative and qualitative program results, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints, timely completion of projects, and achievement of program objectives. Monitors and evaluates program scope and makes necessary adjustments to meet changing needs and priorities.

• Establishes periodic forecasted program commitments and disbursements targets at the country and portfolio level and forecasted program award/ contracting/fundraising goals.

• Directs and manages the portfolio of programs and projects, ensuring efficient resource allocation, risk mitigation, and strategic alignment.

• Produces accurate financial reporting, budget management, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

• Implements effective operational management systems and processes to optimize organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

• Develops and implements robust reporting mechanisms to accurately capture program results, achievements, and impact.

• Prepares and presents comprehensive reports to stakeholders, including the executive team, board members, and donors.

Leadership

• As a member of the Corus Leadership Team, the ideal candidate will contribute to the overall strategic direction, high-level decision making, growth, and success of the organization.

• Collaborates with other leaders to promote a cohesive and collaborative culture to drive the organization forward.

Risk and Resource Management

• Implements a comprehensive risk management framework, addressing programmatic, legal and compliance, health, safety, security, and reputational risks.

• Develops mitigation strategies and ensures effective risk monitoring and reporting systems are in place.

• Optimizes the allocation of human resources, financial resources, and assets across programs and projects to maximize efficiency and impact.

• Identifies opportunities for cost savings, resource rationalization, and process improvement.

Staff Management and Development

• Provides effective leadership and management to staff, ensuring clear communication, goal setting, and performance management.

• Fosters a culture of learning, mentorship, and career growth, providing coaching and professional development opportunities.

• Stays updated on industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements relevant to Corus’ programs and initiatives.

Learning and Knowledge Management

• Fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing across different departments and teams within Corus, promoting cross-functional cooperation and synergy.

• Encourages a culture of learning and knowledge management, facilitating the sharing of best practices and lessons learned.

• Takes ownership and accountability for achieving the strategic and operational goals of Corus, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and organizational values.

• Fosters a culture of accountability across the organization, setting clear expectations and empowering teams to deliver results.

Supervisory

• This position will supervise Country Directors and a small team of technical and program managers.

Candidate Profile

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as business administration, international development, or a related discipline. Master’s or MBA preferred.

• A minimum of 12 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in strategy development, business development, program management, or a related field, preferably in the non-profit or international development sector.

• Experience building and maintaining relationships with donors, private sector partners, and other external stakeholders.

• Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and driving staff development and growth, and proven ability leading and motivating teams, fostering collaboration, and developing staff.

• Experience serving as a member of a leadership team.

• Knowledge of branding and marketing strategies to enhance organizational reputation and visibility.

• Experience in cross-organizational collaboration and knowledge management.

• Understanding of program evaluation and impact assessment methodologies.

• Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to identify growth opportunities, set goals, and develop actionable plans to include problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on achieving organizational objectives.

• Proficiency in project management methodologies, ensuring program delivery on time, within scope, and within budget with ability to independently deliver on clear targets.

• Ability to make informed decisions, demonstrate senior leadership, and be accountable for results.

• Financial acumen and budgeting skills to effectively manage resources and make informed decisions.

• Ability to assess and mitigate risks, ensuring compliance with legal, health, safety, and security requirements.

• Proficiency in using relevant software and technology tools for data analysis, reporting, and project management.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively represent the organization externally and build relationships.

• Must possess confidence, business acumen, and relationship-building skills to move the agency into a social impact organization.

• Proficiency in both English and French is essential for this role.

• The physical requirements that may be needed to execute responsibilities may include bending, standing, and walking.

• The mental requirements that are essential to satisfactorily executing the responsibilities outlined in this job description include: learning new tasks, comprehending, and retaining information, completing tasks independently, effectively communicating verbally and in writing, demonstrating proficiency in using computer software to perform assigned tasks.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

• This position must be able to travel 70% of time or as required for standard domestic and international business purposes.

• If applicable, must have authorization to work in the country of assignment.
