The Role Role:

Associate Director – Business Development (East Africa)

Job Summary We are looking to recruit an Associate Director – Business Development, who will lead management and expansion of exciting work undertaken by Social and Economic Empowerment (SEE) Practice of IPE Global in East Africa, based out of Addis Ababa. Associate Director will primarily be responsible for Business Development which includes early gaining business insights, leading proposal writing, upon win setting up teams for implementation and then take on oversight function for successful delivery of the programme / project.

Social and Economic Empowerment (SEE) practice at IPE Global has strong experience in delivering multiyear and high-impact programs. These programs are supported by leading donors and foundations and are implemented in partnership with coveted research institutions, civil society organisations, and public institutions. The AD – Business Development will work with a team of high-performing development professionals with expertise in the areas of governance, social and behavior change, gender and social inclusion, and program management based out of India and report to IPE Global Representative in Addis Ababa.

Responsibilities Business Development (65%) • Identifying new business opportunities in East Africa, developing leads and contacting potential donors, devising business development strategies and implementing them. • Undertaking outreach activities, keeping up to date with trends within the sector, making sure targets are met periodically, and generating reports and presenting an analysis of business development progress. • Read and analyse solicitation, proposal documents, and develop proposals. • Draft accurate, responsive, compelling text for proposals, including background/context, executive summary, technical approach overview, activity components, and technical annexes. • Collaborate with other team members to improve and streamline the proposal development process. • Maintain proposal content library locally including updated capability statements, research papers, past performances, management plans, and other related proposal content.

Programme Delivery/Management (upon realization of projects) (20%) • Coordinate with project implementation teams to ensure the quality and timeliness of deliverables. • Provide support or leadership as needed to identify and secure partners, consultants, and full-time staff. • Maintain a collaborative relationship with donor, funder, and/or client counterparts. Oversee routine project management activities including reviewing and submitting project reports to donors, developing budgets and work plans, and backstopping operations as needed.

Thought Leadership (15%) • Participate in appropriate professional organizations and networks and stay current on major themes in the profession. • Collaborate with Corporate Communications to identify strategic industry outlets and opportunities for presenting and sharing portfolio work and results. • Develop thought leadership content such as evidence papers, policy notes, expert blog posts, research publications, and media articles.

Candidate Profile Educational: • Master’s degree in international development, gender studies, sociology, economics, or other relevant field is a must. About 8+ years of relevant experience.

Professional Attributes: • Previous entrepreneurial experience in leading proposal development for bilateral/multi-lateral organisations, foundations, and philanthropies. • Strong abilities in structuring commercial proposals, hands-on experience is a must. • Able to work independently and in a team setting. • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a commitment to mentoring and team development. • Demonstrable team management experience, and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, both verbally and in writing. • Project management expertise, including the management of large project teams. • Proven experience working with Governments and international aid agencies.
