Founded in 2000, Room to Read is achieving this goal by providing support during the two most critical time periods in a child’s education: primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education.   Our Literacy Program trains and coaches teachers, creates quality books and curricular materials and establishes libraries filled with diverse children’s books in local languages that can be enjoyed at school or home.

Room to Read India Room to Read India is the organizations largest country program, operating in 12 states.

To date, Room to Read has reached 23 million children in over 48,000 communities across Bangladesh, Cambodia, Grenada, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, United States, Vietnam and Zambia, and plans to benefit 40 million children by 2025.

The Role Role:

Director, Research, Monitoring & Evaluation

Location:

New Delhi, India - with frequent travel to all areas where Room to Read operate in the country and occasional international travel for representation and conferences

The Director Research, Monitoring & Evaluation (RM&E) is a new position being created to build, strengthen, and implement Room to Read India’s Research portfolio. They provide guidance and expertise to program teams on designing, implementing and managing our Monitoring and Evaluation system for all programs including the literacy pilot program, and support in planning, reporting, improving programs’ quality, allocation of resources through provision

of observation and reflection from past experiences. They will report directly to the Country Director and regularly interact with program staff and contribute as a member of Country Management Team to strategic decision-making. They will coordinate with the Global Office on GSD&GI data.

Responsibilities Research Portfolio • Design, build, strengthen and execute the Research portfolio of the organization in collaboration with the program teams • Leverage strategic partnerships with academic and other non-profit research organizations • Develop standardized research methodology and data-management and build organizational expertise • Communicate research findings to broad stakeholder network tailored to their needs • Represent and promote Room to Read in different forums

Monitoring and Evaluation Portfolio • Design, implement and analyze monitoring and facilitate evaluation activities on global, regional and country level

• Lead on developing, implementing, monitoring and reporting on the M&E Annual Plan for RtR India • Support, guide and oversee all monitoring and evaluation efforts of Room to Read in India • Increase staff awareness and knowledge on tools and reliable data/information generation • Compile best practices and lesson learned, to be shared across the organization • Provide information for donor reporting requirements as requested by Global Office • Conduct regular site visits to active project • Network M&E staff throughout the organization for collaboration and knowledge sharing

Candidate profile Qualifications:

The successful candidate

• Master’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, Economics • PhD is an advantage

• Passion for our mission • Good knowledge and understanding of education issues, including community involvement • A strong desire to impact a growing, dynamic nonprofit organization • An autonomous self starter • A proactive and innovative thinker with a sound judgement. • Have a very high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness • Embrace diversity and collaboration • Thrive in a fast-paced and fun environment • Ability to travel frequently to states throughout India • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Hindi • Prior experience living and/or working in rural areas

Minimum Professional Experience: • Twelve years of professional experience in relevant field and sector

Required Competencies: • Robust knowledge of RM&E, including frameworks, research and evaluation strategies, measurement approaches, and the existing evidence base • Extensive experience leading the design and implementation of an array of research and evaluation projects in India, ideally with a focus on literacy programming • Strong technical competence in research and monitoring and evaluation methods • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, with proven ability to work with data software packages such as SPSS, SAS and Stata, including data entry and analysis • Strong operational management ability • Strong analytical skills
