Brush Materials Our heirloom quality brushes are hand crafted in our workshops using traditional skills and the finest natural materials from across the globe. BRUSH HANDLES: We use beech, oak, pear, ash and olive wood which may be left natural or oiled, waxed, varnished or heat treated for increased durability and to resist moisture. ANIMAL HAIR BRISTLES: Wild boar bristles are tougher and thicker at the root than at the tip, so may be used to create both hard or soft brushes. We use Horse hair, the strong tail hair being ideal for cobweb duster brushes, brooms and hand brushes; soft horse hair from the mane is ideal for shoe shine brushes and soft dusting brushes. Badger hair is used for shaving brushes, its rounded tips preventing skin irritation whilst the fine, dense hair generates substantial foamy lather. We use only top quality badger crest hair for our brushes. Goat hair is the softest material we use, its fine, dense hair ideal for dusting, cosmetic and babies’ brushes.
PLANT FIBRE BRISTLES: Tampico fibre grows on the high plains of Mexico. Used for scrubbing brushes, washing brushes and for brushes requiring high heat resistance. Palmyra fibre is found in Sri Lanka and India. It is, like all plant fibres, water-resistant and used mainly for outdoor brooms. It can be mixed with other plant fibres to make extra tough union fibre for vegetable and floor scrubbing brushes. Arenga is from the Asian sugar palm. Finer and softer than other palm fibres but still tough and water resistant, it is ideal for outdoor brushes. Sisal is from Mexican sisal palm and is used for doormats and massage gloves. Rice straw is from the sorghum plant, a type of cereal which is native to the Balkans; it is used to make brooms. Rice root is from the corrugated roots of zatacon grass from the Mexican highlands and is used to make very hard scouring brushes. Coco is fibre taken from beneath the external leathery shell of the coconut. It is used as bristles for brooms, brushes and hand brushes or braided to make mats.
