Bay, Hartfield earn LHS top honors By JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle.com
The Class of 2020 will go down as one of the most unique graduating classes in the world. Never had a senior class experienced their final academic years upended like this year’s did, due to COVID-19. Most have taken this opportunity to embrace the situation and wear it as a badge of honor, including Lafayette High School valedictorian Mason Bay. “I think the Class of 2020 stands out among any other,” Bay said. “Being resilient in this time of crisis and headstrong in everything. A lot of people got to miss out on their senior season of track, baseball or whatever but I’m really proud of them to keep moving and looking towards the future.” With in-person classes canceled in mid-March for the remainder of the current school year, seniors did not get to experience those final months of winding down their high school career with friends and getting proper farewells from teachers and
Mason Bay coaches. Bay had just returned from a trip in Costa Rica right before schools were closed, meaning he walked the halls of Lafayette High School for the last time in early March. Lafayette’s Class of 2020 salutatorian, Taylor Hartfield, is another one of those seniors who is choosing to not look back at what was lost, but instead using it as a source of strength moving forward. “The coronavirus pandemic closing schools has taken away a lot of fun events I was looking
Taylor Hartfield forward to at the end of my senior year, but it has inspired me to cherish every moment because you never know when it will change,” she said. Now with graduation here, Bay and Hartfield have turned their attention toward what is next for them. In June, Bay will head to West Point, N.Y. where he will enroll into the United States Military Academy and begin basic training. “I’m going to basic training this summer, so it’s going to be hard to see these people again,” Bay said. “Thank God
for technology and social media, because I’ve been able to keep in contact with everybody.” Hartfield is enrolling at the University of Mississippi and got accepted into the Sally Barksdale Honors College and is planning to major in biomedical engineering, with a potential double major in psychology. Both will still get to give their speeches during Lafayette’s graduation ceremony. They recorded them when filming their personal walk across the stage, and they will air when the ceremony broadcasts on June 5.
Hu, Hemmins named OHS Top 2 By JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle. com
Two Oxford School District students received good news on Thursday amidst all of the uncertainty regarding their spring semester resuming. Oxford High School senior Edward Hu was named the school’s valedictorian for the 2019-20 school year, and Lilly Hemmins was named salutatorian. Hu leads the Class of 2020 with 4.61 grade point average, while Hemmins was .02 points behind with a GPA of 4.59. The son of Xiaofeng Hu and Yi Yang, Hu is a member of the varsity tennis team, a USA Physics Olympiad honorable mention, a science bowl captain, a Research Science Institute Alumnus, a Canada/USA Mathcamp Alumnus and published a first-authored research paper in CDC Preventing Chronic Disease. Hu’s top three choices of colleges are Harvard,
Edward Hu Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton, and he plans to study applied mathematics or computer science. “Many of my passionate friends, their passion inspires me and motivates me to pursue my own interests, whether it be in research, tennis or math,” Hu said of what has been most influential in his academic success. Hemmins is the daughter of Andy and Cristen Hemmins. She is considering Duke, Tulane and
Lilly Hemmins Columbia as her college destination and is currently unsure what her major will be, but feels it will be in sociology, political science or business with a minor in Spanish. “I am most proud that I’ve completed more than 200 hours of peer tutoring, registered more than 350 students to vote, started my own club and been voted Student Body Vice President,” Hemmins said. With Ole Miss cancelling all in-person
programming on all its campuses until Aug. 1, Oxford’s graduation could not take place at the “Tad Pad” this year. To make up for the traditional ceremony being cancelled, OHS still made sure to provide the graduation experience for its seniors. This year’s ceremony was taped over two days in May and broadcast on May 15, the day Oxford’s graduation was scheduled to take place at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum on the Ole Miss campus.
Prather, Michaud top of their class By JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle.com
Despite their traditional graduation ceremony being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Regents School of Oxford is still celebrating their senior class by naming Sarah Prather and Dominique Michaud as valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2020, respectively. The daughter of Wayne and Janet Prather, Sarah Prather plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall and major in nursing. “Most people have one home; some don’t have one at all, but I’m privileged to say that I not only have one home, but two,” Prather said. “Regents has been my home for over 12 years. I’m sad to go, but I know the people there will always be my family.”
Sarah Prather Michaud intends to go to Harding University in Searcy, Ark. and also has plans to major in nursing. She is the daughter of Luc and Stefanie Michaud. “I’m so excited to see what God has planned for me next season as a college student,” Michaud said. “I’m looking so forward to the adventure.”
Dominique Michaud Regents also announced that William Daniel Stewart was named the Class of 2020’s historian. The son of Scott and Jennifer Stewart, William will attend Ole Miss in the fall and major in computer engineering. “I am very thankful for the blessing of growing up in Oxford and attending
Regents in my high school years,” Stewart said. “I cannot wait to face the next chapter of my life at Ole Miss in the fall.” Normally, the senior class of Regents would be preparing for their graduation ceremony this month, but due to COVID19, the school postponed it for Aug. 8, currently.
