Understanding Weight Loss Surgery Sponsored By Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi
W
eight loss, for many people, is a touchy subject – especially for those who are fighting being overweight or obese. For many, weight loss surgery, otherwise known as bariatric surgery, can be an excellent option for people to lose weight and help create a better quality of life for them. The best part is, candidates don’t even have to leave Oxford to have the surgery performed.
MOST COMMON BARIATRIC SURGERY The most common form of bariatric surgery practiced now is a procedure called sleeve gastrectomy. Sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that limits the amount of food one can eat by removing 75 to 80 percent of the stomach. “So instead of this big reservoir there, the stomach is now the size of a banana. More importantly, the part of the stomach that is removed during surgery creates the chemical

hormone Ghrelin,” said Dr. Walker Byars, who specializes in bariatric and general surgery at Oxford Surgical and Bariatric clinic in Oxford. Ghrelin is the hormone that prepares the body for food. This is what generates the sense of hunger in the body.
DETERMINING WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY Candidates for this surgery are determined by their BMI, or Body Mass
Index. BMI is the height-to-weight ratio of an individual, which determines an individual’s body fat. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 indicates an individual is overweight. A BMI of 30 or higher indicates an individual is obese. The surgery usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour, and most patients are up and walking by the end of the day after surgery. The surgery can be performed laparoscopically or robotically. Both types of operations are minimally invasive and help with the short surgery and recovery time. Byars uses the Da Vinci robotic surgical system to perform sleeve gastrectomies, and has performed more than 1,000 surgeries with the system. “Da Vinci is a huge help to me, because it helps us get the surgery right with the same successful results every procedure,” Byars said.
LIFE AFTER WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY After the surgery, the patients are immediately put on a diet. Most
patients, depending on their field of work, are back at work within two weeks after surgery. The next part that comes after the surgery recovery is a year-long program, during which the patients meet with the doctors and staff to make sure they are on track. This year-long intensive program is what makes Baptist different from other weight loss programs. “It’s different than anything we do, like if you have your gallbladder taken out, you come in and have the surgery, then we see you post-operation and send you on your way. This we go through and see the patients an entire year, sometimes longer, and can see the patients change,” Byars said. Success rates for the program are above 95 percent, and the average amount of weight loss over the course of one year is 100 pounds. Patients have to commit to a lifestyle change of eating healthier and exercising for the program to work, meeting with dietitians and staff periodically
to make sure they are on the right track. The program also offers support groups, where patients can share their experiences with other patients and learn and help each other. “The whole goal behind the program and the surgery is not to get the patient to a certain weight, it is to get patients to where they are happier, healthier and live longer,” Byars said. For more information about the surgery and the weight loss program, contact Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi at 1-800-976-5589 or Dr. Therrien and Dr. Byars at Oxford Surgical and Bariatric Center, 662-234-4744. Patients who are interested can also attend a free bariatric seminar, which is offered once a month at Baptist. Patients will be educated on the surgery and program and hear testimonials from former patients at the seminar. Baptist Hospital earns Baby-Friendly designation
BY ANNA GUIZERIX
N
ew babies on the block will receive a higher standard of care thanks to Baptist Hospital-North Mississippi’s latest designation as a Baby-Friendly birth facility. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. has designated Baptist a Baby-Friendly facility for its commitment to encouraging new mothers to breastfeed their babies, a statement from the hospital said. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. According to the statement, scientific evidence points to lower risks for certain diseases and improved health outcomes for both mothers and babies who breastfeed. Bill Henning, administrator and chief executive officer of BMH-NM, said the prestigious designation is the product of hard work. “Earning Baby-Friendly designation is a great achievement and one that Baptist is extremely proud of,” Henning said. “Our team went through extensive training to

learn how best to support new families in infant feeding. Without their hard work and dedication this accomplishment would not have been possible.”
6 | 2020 NORTH MISSISSIPPI HEALTHCARE GUIDE
As part of the Baby-Friendly initiative, healthy newborns at Baptist Hospital-North Mississippi are placed immediately on their mothers at birth for skin-to-skin contact. Babies are not interrupted for unnecessary medical procedures as they bond with their mothers and make their first feeding attempts. Baptist Hospital-North Mississippi is one of five Baby-Friendly facilities in the state. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (“BFHI”), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). “Recognition as a Baby-Friendly facility demonstrates our team’s commitment to providing evidence-based maternity care with the goal of achieving optimal infant feeding, as well as strengthening the bond between mother and baby,” said Mark Ottens, chief nursing officer at BMHNM. “The Baby-Friendly assessment team’s rigorous review of our program is another confirmation that we are delivering the highest standard of care to our new mothers.”

2020 NORTH MISSISSIPPI HEALTHCARE GUIDE | 13
Patient Guide Checking into the hospital can be an intimidating experience for some. Follow these guidelines to ensure your stay at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi goes as smoothly as possible. First things first:
Ask your doctor what will happen during your hospital visit. Ask for a simpler explanation for anything you don’t understand. Select an “advocate” to help you during your hospital stay. You need a trusted family member or friend to assist you, in your room, during stressful moments, remembering things you can’t and making sure your wishes are respected.
PREPARE A MEDICAL INFORMATION FILE
Be prepared to share your medical history with the doctors and nurses who will be caring for you. An at-home medical file is a convenient way to gather the documents that you may need if hospitalized: • Medical directive documents, including a living will and durable power of attorney for health care decision-making. • A list of your current medications, including any over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines and alternative products including the dose, frequency and reason for taking each. • A list of all your allergies, including food, environmental and medication allergies. • If you have a problem with falling or other safety issues, note that, too. • A list of your physicians and their phone numbers. • A list of all pharmacies and phone numbers.
MEDICATIONS YOU RECEIVE AT THE HOSPITAL
While you’re in the hospital, your physician may prescribe more than one medication for you. Ask these questions about them and write down the answers: • What are the names of the medications I’m taking? • Why am I taking this medication? • What times will I be receiving the medication? • Can I see what my medications look like? • May I have a summary list of my discharge medications?
PRE-ADMISSION AND INSURANCE
Please let Baptist know ahead of time that you are coming. Most insurance companies require prior approval or certification. • Notify your insurance company as soon
as you think you will have to go to the hospital. • Many insurance companies require you to notify them no later than 48 hours after an emergency admission to the hospital. • Your insurance company may or may not be responsible for paying for your services. It depends on your policy. • You and your physician are responsible for making sure you have met all the conditions of your policy. Your personal information: Keep in mind that you are being admitted to the hospital because your physician, who is a member of the medical staff, has requested it. Therefore, we will need to get some personal information from you, including financial and medical records required by law. These records are confidential and will not be released to persons not involved in your care or payment for your care without your written consent. • Ask your doctor what will happen during your hospital visit. Ask for a simpler explanation for anything you don’t understand. • Select an “advocate” to help you during your hospital stay. You need a trusted family member or friend to assist you, in your room, during stressful moments, remembering things you can’t and making sure your wishes are respected.

An at-home medical file is a convenient way to gather the documents that you may need if hospitalized: • Medical directive documents, including a living will and durable power of attorney for health care decision making (see below). • A list of your current medications, including any over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, herbal medicines and alternative products including the dose, frequency and reason for taking each. • A list of all your allergies, including food, environmental and medication allergies. • If you have a problem with falling or other safety issues, note that too. • A list of your physicians and their phone numbers. • A list of all pharmacies and phone numbers.

YOUR LEGAL MEDICAL DIRECTIVES
You should prepare an advanced medical directive, either a signed and notarized living will or a durable power of attorney for health care. You may also set up an advance care plan or appoint your own health care agent using the forms below. • In case something happens and you can’t make decisions for yourself, these legal documents let your doctors and family know what you have already decided about your care. • Tell your doctors and family about this now so there aren’t any surprises. • If you need to set up a living will or power of attorney while you are already in the hospital, notify Patient Registration. • If you do not bring a copy with you, have someone bring it to the hospital to be placed in your medical chart as soon as possible.
MEDICAL DIRECTIVE LEGAL FORMS
If you don’t already have the documents listed above, you can print, fill out and sign an advance directive, with or without an attorney. Two (2) witnesses must sign in your presence or you must have the document notarized. The forms can be found online at https://baptistonline.org.
• Notify your insurance company as soon as you think you will have to go to the hospital.
DURING YOUR STAY
Make sure you have a copy of the Patient Bill of Rights in your hospital room. If for any reason you feel you aren’t receiving the best care possible, talk to the nurse in charge or the hospital’s patient relations representative. • For your safety, you will receive an identification wristband to wear until you are discharged from the hospital. • Any medications you bring into the hospital must be left with the nurse.
• Please do not keep valuables or money with you. The hospital cannot be responsible for them. • Electronic appliances, such as hair dryers, clocks, electric razors and curling irons, must be checked and approved by someone from nursing services before being used in your room. • Do not bring pillows or blankets from home. If you need extra linens, please contact someone at the nurses’ station.
COUNTDOWN TO CHECK-OUT
Procedures for your check-out or discharge from the hospital involve your doctors and staff working together. Please be patient during this process. We understand your eagerness to return home! • Your doctor will advise you that you are ready to be discharged from the hospital and will write orders directing the hospital staff to begin the discharge process. • Your nurse will act on any orders your doctor has ordered prior to discharge. This could involve final tests or lab procedures that need to be completed prior to your leaving. This process can take several hours. • At this point, you may not be completely recovered and may need extra attention and care at home. Please tell your nurse you would like to speak with a case manag-
er and/or social worker if you need help in planning for special equipment. • Contact family members to arrange a ride home, unless you will be traveling by ambulance (hospital staff will handle that). Be sure to let the hospital staff know if you prefer a particular ambulance service. • Once you have been officially cleared for discharge, your nurse will remove your IV and other medical devices, discuss with you any physician instructions, such as follow-up visits and how to take medications. • Finally, you will be assisted to the door by a member of the hospital staff.
MANAGING YOUR PAIN
Based on your comfort level, your health care providers will develop a pain management plan for you while you’re in the hospital. Be sure to share with your doctor what has worked to relieve your pain in the past and to provide honest answers to questions about the pain you’re experiencing. • Don’t hesitate or be afraid to tell the hospital staff if you’re in pain. • Don’t wait to report pain. Pain is much easier to control when it first begins than when it has become intolerable. • Actively help your health care professionals assess your pain. Answer their questions as completely and honestly as you can.
