L.E.V8 AT THE OXFORD FOUNDRY

We are delighted to showcase the first cohort of ventures who have been part of our Foundry family for the past six months. Through the L.E.V8 accelerator programme, these ventures have received a package of support worth over £600k, including valuable access to a network of entrepreneurial experts and mentors. Each of them has had a tailored learning programme, designed to support each participant in their evolution towards being resilient, empathetic entrepreneurial leaders, strong communicators, and strategic thinkers. During their six months with us, the ventures have made huge strides. They’ve raised investment in the realm of £1.2m, grown their teams by 1-2 people each, and grown their client/user numbers significantly – some by up to 300%. And, importantly, they have developed some crucial skills required for leadership and business. Collectively this cohort demonstrates just how entrepreneurial and diverse our Oxford ecosystem is: they cover 11 nationalities and 14 areas of study, from an MSc in Medical Anthropology to a DPhil in Population Health, with a 50/50 split between alumni and current Oxford students. Each of our teams is working on impact-driven and purposeled solutions to global issues, from providing transparency and better accountability in the pharmaceutical industry supply chain through blockchain technology, to encouraging affordable, sustainable healthcare access, to increasing supply and enabling cost savings within the dairy market industry in East Africa.

L.E.V8 AT THE OXFORD FOUNDRY

While only two of the teams have female leaders – a reflection of the current national average in start-ups – this statistic prompted us to launch our L.E.V8 Women programme, to ensure stronger and more prominent female representation across the board. The first cohort of L.E.V8 women teams joined us on our intensive pre-accelerator this summer, and many of them now plan to apply to the next cohort of L.E.V8. As they pass through our doors and step forward into their futures, they will remain a part of our Foundry collective. Our network and community will be here to support them as they continue to grow and develop – or in some cases, as they pivot, or fail and start again. They, in turn, will join our evergreen cycle of support, and contribute their experience and learnings to the L.E.V8 cohorts that follow them. Our immense gratitude goes to the legion of advisors, mentors and experts who have generously given their time to nurture and upskill our teams in the past six months. These luminaries have made a huge, positive difference to the lives and futures of each participant, and we are grateful for their continued guidance and support. Ana Bakshi Director of the Oxford Foundry

THE OXFO L.E.V8 ACCELERATOR C O H O R T 1 – M A R C H-S E P T E M B E R 20 18

I wish there had been something like the Oxford Foundry when I was here as a student. Entrepreneurs often find themselves charting new territories, and that can be both terrifying and lonely. But a facility like this, that brings diverse people together, offers practical support and encourages fearlessness, it’s a tremendous gift that is bound to ease that venture into the unknown and yield greater outcomes for everyone.

I am delighted to provide the seed financing that will help connect the people and the resources of Oxford with the students who are eager to learn entrepreneurship and create new opportunities. Industries and career paths are rapidly transforming, and I believe the many future jobs will come through blitz-scaling entrepreneurship. The Oxford Foundry is a place to engage, nurture, and inspire the talented students who will go on to solve the problems and build the institutions of the future. It is an honour to be on part of this journey with Oxford University.

Veratrak, a document collaboration and workflow management platform, is the first industry approved commercial blockchain product, allowing pharmaceutical supply chain companies to communicate sensitive documents and work together with greater efficiency, security, and auditability.

Efficient pharmaceutical supply chains are essential for delivering high quality, cost effective and increasingly personalised medicines. With the rise of generic medicines, the patent cliff and more stringent regulations, pharmaceutical companies are looking to unlock large amounts of value through innovation and the digitisation of their supply chain processes. Veratrak has strong commercial traction with a recurring contract in place with a global pharmaceutical packager. Winners of the University of Oxford ‘Innovation of the Year’ award, they secured pre-seed funding from SeedCamp and won investment from the prestigious Oxford Seed Fund earlier in 2018. www.veratrak.com

ECOSYNC “O N A M I S S I O N TO R E D U C E T H E C A R B O N F O OT P R I N T O F L A R G E O R G A N I S AT I O N S A N D INSTITUTIONS

Large organisations spend millions of pounds on their energy bills, and create tons of CO2. Meanwhile, 70% of their heated rooms are empty and 40% of the energy is wasted.

EcoSync optimises the performance of buildings and reduces their energy consumption by software-hardware integration while - addressing the 3 issues of pollution, cost and wasted energy. EcoSync is a (patent pending) cloud-based platform synchronising the existing building technology; It harvests occupancy data from the room booking system and sensors, and controls heating with retrofitting hardware (IoT technology). This way the system finds empty rooms and heat occupied areas only, saving 40% on the energy bills. www.ecosync.energy

ALBUS H E A LT H “ P E R S O N A L I S E D A S T H M A C A R E AT H O M E

Albus Health is developing a home monitoring system to predict and prevent asthma attacks. In the UK, every 10 seconds someone is rushed to the emergency room, every 8 minutes someone is hospitalised and every 8 hours someone dies due to an asthma attack.

Costs to treat patients with asthma attacks go up to billions each year. Despite advances in medical sciences and technology, and after spending billions, asthma sufferers still have to go through this traumatic experience of having an attack. One of the key reasons for this is the failure to identify early warning signs. Albus Health is developing an automated and real-time home monitoring system that monitors asthma symptoms at home, predicts the risk of future attacks and enables the patients to selfmanage their conditions to prevent an attack.
