About Oxford Medical Alumni Oxford Medical Alumni provides a focus for alumni of the medical sciences at Oxford University and for those teach, or have taught medical students, or have worked in medicine at Oxford University. 2014 has been a year of considerable activity for OMA. Medical alumni reunions were held for those qualifying in 1990 and in 2004 who met in Osler House; those qualifying 30 years ago at Queen’s College; and those qualifying 40 years ago had a reunion at Nuffield College, whilst those qualifying 50 years ago met and dined at Oriel in December. One notable feature of these reunions is the year book that accompanies each reunion. Compiled from alumni submissions it makes fascinating reading. In addition the antipodean reunion in Adelaide reminds us how far flung and world-wide is the influence of those trained in medicine at Oxford. This year we congratulated those qualifying in 2014 with a reception held immediately after graduation in the Sheldonian. The Medical Sciences Teaching Centre was packed to bursting with qualified students and their proud families celebrating their achievement. 2014 also saw the inauguration of a third prestige lecture to be added to the Osler and Weatherall Lectures. This being the 300th anniversary of the death of John Radcliffe it was decided, with the Head of the Medical Sciences Division at Oxford, to inaugurate an annual Radcliffe Lecture to highlight developments in one particular part of the Division. Who better to deliver the first, than Professor Hugh Watkins, Head of the Radcliffe Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. On November 12th he filled the large st lecture theatre at the new Maths Institute in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter with an audience of alumni, academics, students and friends; who heard him give a fascinating talk entitled “Genomics – hope or hype?” on the role of genetic analysis in cardiovascular medicine. OMA seeks to reinforce the mutually beneficial relationship between the University Medical Sciences Division, the Medical Schoo l, our alumni and friends by offering opportunities for acquaintance and learning, and promoting good fellowship. Oxford Medical Alumni holds a number of events in the UK including three named lectures to which medical alumni, academics, clinicians and members of the wider University and alumni community are invited. International OMA meetings are held in North America, Asia and Europe as part of the University Alumni Weekends. Our Australian Chapter also holds a biennial meeting and reunion.

Weatherall Lecture April 2015 The 2015 Weatherall Lecture was given by Professor Adrian Hill on 23rd April 2015 on “Vaccines for malaria and Ebola”. The lecture was followed by a dinner at Linacre College.

Osler Lecture September 20th 2015

In September 2014 the Osler Lecture on ‘Good ageing: how should we pay for care when we are elderly?’ was given by Professor Sir Andrew Dilnot as part of the programme for the Oxford University Alumni Weekend. Other medical lectures were given by Dr Martin Christlieb, Professor Sir John Bell, and Professor Chas Bountra. The 2015 lecturer for the 10th Osler Lecture will be confirmed shortly.

Radcliffe Lecture November 2015

Details of the 2015 lecture will be available soon.
