Observatory Hosts Mars Night words by Jacky Kirk photos by Dave Woodcock

Follow us on

Visitors to the Observatory at Oxford Area School were treated to a celebration of the planet Mars, on the evening of Saturday 4th August. For the first time since 2003, Mars is at its closest to the Earth, making it bigger and brighter in the night sky. Although visible to the naked eye, visitors got close-up views of the planet through the observatory telescope, and telescopes belonging to members of the Canterbury Astronomical Society. Also visible in the night sky, were Venus and Jupiter. An extra-terrestrial atmosphere was created outside in the darkness, by projecting images of Mars onto a large screen to the accompanying soundtrack of Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds. One of the brightest stars of the evening was twelve-year-old Emma Warwick, a pupil of Oxford Area School, who along with Chloe Firkin and Janey Leslie, accompanied visitors around the exhibition held in the school. Emma’s passion and knowledge were commendable. She explained about the conditions on Mars (very cold and dusty), the best way to land a spacecraft on Mars (bounce gently on inflatable balloons) and the geography of the planet (enormous mountain peaks). She talked about missions to Mars and admitted that her ‘real passion’ was the Greek and Roman mythology of Mars. Walking around the exhibition, it was evident how many hours had been spent by the organisers. Exhibits included video presentations and a dedicated ‘Kids’ Corner’. Mars New Zealand played their part in celebrating the proximity of Mars by donating, what else, but Mars Bars! An estimated three hundred people attended the event, helping to raise funds to purchase a new telescope for the observatory.

“A story of murder, mystery and thievery, of art, love and loss”. Elodie Winslow is an archivist, who finds some long forgotten items, including a photo of a woman and a picture of a house, that unsettlingly reminds her of a house that her mother had told her stories about when she was young. Told by a number of different characters, and across different times, we learn about a group of artists, who spent a summer based at Birchwood Manor and the events that transpire.

After six years in the business, The Main Divide Hair Lounge has gone through it’s own makeover. Owner Amie decided she was ready to make the business a reflection of herself. She says that it is a milestone for her, as she has survived the well-known toughest few years of business and is going strong. Native birds and flora feature in the new look salon, which for Amie is a taste of Ashley Gorge, a place that is home and makes her feel comfortable. This has fit in seamlessly with the recycled wood bar and counter already in place. While it is a reflection of her personal life, it also goes with her business ethos which is about people coming and having their hair done in a relaxing and comfortable environment. The process has been something she has been wanting to do for some time and has been a collaborative effort with a friend of Amie’s who helped her bring the vision to life, and also with all of the staff who put a huge amount of effort and work into the makeover. Amie and the team are all enjoying their new work environment and would love you to pop in and have a look.

Police Commendations for Outstanding Community Service words by Emily Chapman

Oxford resident Tussock Rendel, and Fresh Choice Oxford owners Mike and Nicky Rutherford recently received District Commanders Commendations at a Police Canterbury District awards ceremony, held at St Michael and All Angels Church in Christchurch. This is an annual ceremony where awards include long service awards, Commissioners certificates and District Commanders commendations. Unbeknownst to the recipients, Oxford Police Constable Aaron Campbell had nominated them for their contributions to the Oxford Community. Tussock has spent many years sober driving for the community, and a big focus of this has been for the youth. She has spent her weekends staying up late to drive people home from parties and events. Constable Campbell says that “in doing this she has made sure numerous people have got home safely”. She has ensured that many have not driven under the influence of alcohol, thus endangering both themselves, and others.

Mike and Nicky have put a considerable amount of effort and funds into the community for CCTV cameras. The Waimakariri District Council-owned cameras on the skate park have been linked into the Rutherford’s system, and these cameras have had the effect of basically eradicating any issues there. The cameras have also helped Police to resolve issues around the community.

Aaron believes that there would not be any cameras in place if it wasn’t for their contributions. There is now also, a number plate recognition camera on the Main Street, and they have taken the extra step to link this back to the Police Station. The Police motto is “Safer Communities Together” and the actions of Tussock, Mike and Nicky support and uphold this in the Oxford Community.

Oxford where every day is Gold Card Day! Mike and Nicky Rutherford from Fresh Choice Oxford have run a Gold Card day on Tuesdays for some time. On these days those with Gold Cards have been eligible for 5% discount on their purchases. They started the initiative as a thank you to the community for being so supportive of them for the last 10 years that they have been operating in Oxford. However, Mike and Nicky realised that for a lot of people, coming out of their homes and into the shop is part of their social interaction. With this in mind they decided that they wanted to give them the opportunity to be able to use the discount every day - not just on Tuesdays.

So they have made ‘every day’ a

‘ Gold Card day ’

If you have a Gold Card pop on down to the store for your 5% discount on your groceries. Ngaire Barrett says “It means a lot to us all. Over winter our power bill is high and having 5% off our groceries is very very special to us. It was wonderful when it was every Tuesday, but it is nice to be able to go down whenever we want and still receive the discount. We are all very grateful to Mike and Nicky for this wonderful idea”. Lida Keerweer agrees with this and says that “it is just marvellous, & a great help to a lot of pensioners.” She goes on to say “Both Mike and Nicky are very community minded and such an asset to Oxford.” As many of you will notice, a familiar face is missing from the shop. Store Manager Jen Folau has moved into Christchurch to live, and for work, after 5 years with Fresh Choice Oxford. Mike and Nicky are really sad to see her go, but wish her the best for her new job. They have welcomed Glen Cullen into the role. Glen brings with him a lot of experience in the industry and is already fitting in well to the store culture. Make sure to say hello if you see him in the store!

The LifeStyler

words and Photo by Cathy Dee

The Importance of Dental Care for your Horse A yearly dental check for your equine is essential, and needed more frequently if he is young, a miniature horse, or elderly.

Horses’ teeth are continuously growing for most of their life which, on the roughage they evolved on, wasn’t a problem as it wore the teeth down as they grew.

Unfortunately, our domestic horses graze a lot of soft green grass often along with commercial feeds which, as demonstrated so clearly in this photograph, means the teeth just keep on growing, even to the extent of remodelling the jaw bone! Because the molars of the horse do not meet squarely, due to the lower jaw being narrower than the upper jaw, uneven wear creates sharp points on the outer edges of the top teeth, and the inner edges of the bottom teeth that can irritate the cheeks, gums, and tongue.

A qualified equine dentist will ‘float’ the teeth. This involves rasping these sharp edges. They also can help to correct malformations such as a ‘parrot mouth’, where the lower jaw is too short, causing an overbite, or a ‘sow mouth’ where there is an underbite due to the lower jaw being too long.

Both conditions make it more difficult for the horse to chew effectively, and left without dental treatment, may lead to them wearing the teeth into a pattern that forces the jaw into a severe misalignment. So, don’t wait until the horse is showing signs of pain. If you can’t remember when your horse last had his teeth done, it’s probably time to book that equine dentist!

BUT... YOU DIDN’T FIX ME Sometimes we have patients annoyed when they have paid to be seen, and feel they weren’t fixed. This is a classic case of misaligned expectations.

Oxford Community Health Centre is committed to educating our community around expectations, ensuring both patient and health provider can collaborate on the health care process together.

GP’s will acknowledge that it isn’t always possible to be 100% correct. Their determination is based on the time they have with you, their observations and your information. They then use their best knowledge and skill to decide an explanation and plan for you.

Sometimes one thing can present as another or more than one thing could be going on. Sometimes it could be a combination of sickness and injury, or a more serious condition could even be hiding while addressing another condition. The most important thing to remember is that your GP is there to guide and help you through the health care process, especially if your symptoms change or worsen.

A further visit might be required as part of this process, so please do come back and see us if you’re not feeling better. It doesn’t mean you haven’t been fixed, it just means more time and information is needed to get you on the right track.

Fire Safety a Focus by Emily Chapman

North Canterbury Business Expo

A chance conversation recently with some families who did not have smoke alarms, led to a few sleepless nights for Fresh Choice Oxford owner Mike Rutherford. As Mike is also in the Oxford Fire Brigade, fire safety is something that he is very focused on. In light of this, he was keen to find a solution for families. He and Nicky decided to start the ball rolling, and through funding have purchased 50 smoke alarms to donate. As well as this, Mike also approached Brigade Chief Trevor Ealam and said “we need to fix this”, to see how the local brigade could help. Trevor then contacted FENZ (Fire and Emergency NZ) and they agreed to donate a further 24 alarms. As well as donating the smoke alarms, the Oxford Fire Brigade is happy to come to your home and install them for you. They will also check smoke alarms that are already installed, and change batteries if that is required.

The North Canterbury Business Expo is a first time event, organised by the Rangiora Promotions Association. The Expo will encompass 60+ local businesses under one roof, and is a prime opportunity to showcase the many business options available within North Canterbury.

There are no eligibility requirements, so if you would like to enquire about this please contact Trevor Ealam on email ealamtj@gmail.com, or phone: 027 297 7564. The importance of having smoke alarms cannot be emphasised enough. Trevor Ealam says “Smoke alarms save lives. Make sure you have working smoke alarms.” Remember working smoke alarms are your only voice!

For businesses, this is a chance to promote your business and develop new business leads. For customers, this is a chance to save time and money, while discovering several products and services available to you in your community. Make the most of the ‘Expo Only Specials’ and receive great discounts on the day, for services you require every day. For businesses wishing to exhibit, and/or host a seminar, please contact us now to secure your space. Spaces will be filled on a first in first served basis. There are options for indoor booths, as well as outdoor trade displays. There is also an option for businesses to host their own 20 minute seminar to really deliver their business messages, and why their services can be of benefit to their customers. For the local community, the Expo will be your one stop shop for learning more about the array of services available within our district, another reason not to travel over the bridge.

Rangiora Promotions would love to hear from any business within North Canterbury to take part in this Expo so please visit the Rangiora Promotions website to enquire: www.rangiorapromotions.co.nz

AFTER THE FUNERAL – THE PAPER WORK Oxford-based lawyer, Cheryl Simes (Kiwilaw), now offers a lowfee probate-application for executors of a will, or for ‘letters of administration’ if there is no will. ‘Say you need probate because your brother had more than $15,000 in Kiwisaver. Your brother’s lawyer in (say) Dunedin holds the will. That lawyer may offer to get probate for you. ‘Before you go ahead, ask them what it will cost. If you don’t ask, they don’t have to tell you beforehand. Ask them whether their estimate includes the $200 High Court fee. If their estimate exceeds $600, ask them to wait until you get back to them. Then check Kiwilaw’s website.’ Cheryl works from home. This work can be done by phone and email, and – if computers are not your thing - she will travel to an Oxford client’s home.

Second hand Style By Kerri Booth

Do you know what? I don’t think I have introduced myself in this column. I have thrown out bits of advice, but I haven’t introduced me. So I am Kerri Booth and I own a Recycle Boutique called Polkadotcom in Darfield and have done so for 3 1/2 years. Before this, Polkadotcom was called Pot Pourri and I worked for the previous owner, for three years before she retired and it became mine. At first it was a little part time job that helped me get out of the house when I had small children, but it actually ended up taking over my mind and heart, and became a full time job and then a business which I own. The first few years were a real eye opener to me on how women especially, feel about themselves and the way that they dress. I realized that a lot of the insecurities I had about what to wear, so did many other women. Being in the business of recycled clothing I also saw fast fashion and how disposable we are as a society. It opened my eyes to how much the impact would be if 1. We shopped second hand first and 2. If we knew and understood our wardrobe then we would make less impulse purchases, which fuels the fast fashion beast. This has led on to me providing Wardrobe Consultations Services to help give knowledge to women to shop in a more sustainable way, but also to have tools on how to style themselves to be the best they can be. We all know that when we feel good in what we are wearing, we then present the best of ourselves, which then inspires others to be the best of themselves. So now Polkadotcom is not only a Recycled Boutique, but also provides Wardrobe Consultations. It has been exciting to find a business that combines my love of fashion, the planet we live in, and also the people on it. If you get a chance I would encourage you to check it out but also your local recycle stores, as every little bit helps.

Why the Internet Can’t Sell Your Home There’s a lot of social media chat along the lines of, “Why do I need to use a real estate agent? All they do is put an ad on Trade Me. I can do that myself and save thousands!” It’s true – anyone can put an ad on Trade Me. But it’s also what happens when you receive an enquiry that determines just how happy you’ll be with the result of your sale (there’s a good reason there’s no “Buy Now” button for real estate listings). You see a real estate salesperson is actually a professional match-maker skilled at aligning the needs of a vendor with those of a buyer, creating a win-win for both. Despite the bad wrap we get in the media from time to time, agents with longevity in the industry only remain because we consistently achieve a far better end result for our sellers than if they’d sold privately, even after paying commission. Attracting dozens of buyers, then identifying the person willing to pay the most, is the crux of our job. This involves many tried and true advertising methods, TradeMe being just one of them. In fact, an agent’s TradeMe advertising is significantly more effective than that of a private seller as we have several listings simultaneously amassing a pool of buyers who we cross-refer to other properties if the original one isn’t suitable. More buyers almost always means more dollars.

Kitchen & Joinery Manufacturers email|fitoutjoinery@gmail.com

phone 0211503644 NOWEN OP

The skill of an agent again comes to the fore during the process of negotiation, auction or tender. An experienced agent will work tirelessly on your behalf to ensure the best possible end result. So although the Internet can’t sell your home, it is a superbly effective advertising tool when used in conjunction with other strategies. Technology has changed the way we do business but human nature hasn’t changed. For the best result, you still need a real estate salesperson skilled at working with people to help them fulfil their dreams and move on to their next chapter.

Want more, no obligation advice? Or to know how much your home is worth? Please call me anytime, I’d be delighted to help.

The Cat in Hat LIVE ON STAGE ! Few children’s books have stood the test of time quite like Dr Seuss’s 200 word masterpiece ‘The Cat in the Hat’. As the top selling children’s author of all time, the story is as popular now as it was in the 1950’s when Oxford University educated Theodor ‘Seuss’ Geissel wrote the book. Now both children and adults alike are sure to be left in raptures by this zany and imaginative stage show, that will bring the story to life on a 20 city, 40 show nationwide tour of theatres and arenas. The play was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the National Theatre of Great Britain, but tells the story consistent with the book, of a brother and sister, bored at home on a rainy day (without their Mother!!??) when they are visited by none other than ‘The Cat’ in his red and white striped Hat (which they let in the door!!??) . Their outspoken and outraged pet Fish (yip the fish talks, and is the babysitter!!) is astounded and concerned, but this cat will not be deterred. He will teach us all to make our own fun with nothing but a little imagination.“It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how.” Along with his friends, Thing One and Thing Two (hey we all have those types of friends), they

Fishing was a popular hobby for the pioneers of Oxford. The anticipation of not knowing what, if anything, will take hold of a fishing line was as exciting then as it is now. On 9th November 1889 the Oxford and Cust Observer reported on an unusual fishing expedition which occurred in Oxford earlier in the week:

Monster Eel

The day being hot with intermittent warm showers, it occurred to our townsmen Mr Allpress and George Keats senior to partake in the gentle art of angling. Hence, armed with the necessary bait and all things necessary for the solace and comfort of the inner man, they took themselves to a creek near Mr George Booth’s sawmill.

flax bush mixed with koromiko. An eel-line was set and well pegged into the ground. Another eel-line was set further up the stream and the party fished with rods in the middle, their object being to keep an eye on either eel-line. After some time a great commotion was observed in the neighbourhood of the flax, which at first was thought to be caused by a small dog which accompanied the party being probably in pursuit of a Maori hen. On examining the line it turned out that the bait had been taken by an enormous eel. It was later weighed at Mr Ansell’s butchery in West Oxford, where it scaled the enormous weight of twenty and a half pounds.

Council Update

With Wendy Doody Waimakariri Councillor

I would firstly like to acknowledge with respect the passing of Ken Stevenson Waimakariri District Council Roading Manager which he held for 12 years until his retirement recently due to ill health. Ken leaves a number of lasting legacies within our district and one in particular in our area is the sealing of Thongcaster Road. Ken worked with the residents of Thongcaster Road to make this public private partnership happen. He was a calm and considerate gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour and will be dearly missed by council staff and members. With the Cancer Society “Daffodil Day” on 31st August give a donation so in the future others may not lose their lives to cancer. Waimakariri Bridge widening: construction is to start from Monday 27th August and will take around 16 months to complete. The completion of the bridges will see an extra lane on both the northbound bridge and the southbound bridge plus a new clip on cycleway attached to the outside of the southbound bridge. While this work is underway there will be minor to medium impact on traffic. One lane on either the north or south may have to be regularly closed. However this will be done during off peak hours. Council staff will work closely with Transport Agency and Christchurch Northern Corridor staff to provide information to the public on any impacts to road users, as well as providing information about the project itself as the work progresses. The project information can be found on www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/christchurchmotorways/christchurch-northern -corridor/ Nominations for Community Services Awards: open on Friday 24th August and close on Monday 17th September 2018 strictly at 5pm. If you know someone in your community that you think deserves this award then get a nomination form from Council. Not all nominations are accepted to go forward to receive an award, so if you are nominating anyone, or encouraging an application, please provide as much information on the person’s achievements as possible, as this assists the nomination judging process. Free Computer Training at the Waimakariri Libraries: Stepping Up is an exciting programme that helps you take your computer skills to the next level. Fortnightly at the Rangiora and Kaiapoi Libraries starting 22 August: Wednesdays: Smart Phones Friday: Computer Basics 10am – 12pm Oxford Library: Smart Phones- Tuesday every fortnight from 28th August 2018 - 1pm – 3pm Course availability and registrations: phone 3755009 or ask at any Waimakariri Library. Treat Your Skin - with The Oxford House of Beauty

By Emily Chapman

Debbie Hawkins from The Oxford House of Beauty invited me to come out and try one of her O Cosmedics Enzyme Peels. As someone who has not had a lot of facials and treatments I wasn’t sure what to expect. Going out to see Debbie in her studio is always a treat and the peel was well worth a visit. Some of the benefits of these peels are that they improve skin texture and skin barrier function, reveal healthy glowing fresh skin, remove dead skin cells, stimulate elastin and collagen, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and reduces surface pigmentation. Debbie did warn me that I could end up with some tingling and heat on my face while the products were on, but I had none of this and after this was taken off she then put on a cooling alginate mask that is also great for aging, lines and wrinkles and dehydrated skin. After the treatment my skin felt soft, hydrated and plumped up and still feels great. I will definitely be booking in for more. Some of Debbie’s other clients share their experiences below:-I am happy to share my experiences of regular O Cosmedics peels that Deb Hawkins has performed for me. With my stage of age, my skin needs that little bit more care and attention. I can immediately feel my skin stimulated to life with better hydration and a healthy glow! Thanks Deb for giving me some quality time for myself and my skin, always looks years younger! (J)I’ve had two of the new peels being offered. Never having had a peel before I was a little apprehensive. Will it sting? Will I react and go red? No to both of these. Debbie checked regularly that I was not feeling any discomfort. After my treatment I used the products supplied in the special package and my skin looked great! I can recommend this new treatment happily. (W)I have been having O Peels and using O products for the last 5 years. Before this I had a lot of red broken capillaries on my cheeks and dark sun spots on the side of my face. They have almost disappeared and faded to the stage you have to really look to see them. After having a O Peel, my skin looks bright and feels great. Debbie is really obliging and knows which products should be used on your skin. (KB)Lying on a warm bed, soft music, dim lights makes relaxing so easy while Debbie deals with my dry skin and wrinkles and as I am coming up 70 next year, and don’t drink enough water, I have a few. I have been a customer of Debbie’s for a number of years and she has worked her magic on my face. My skin feels softer and smoother and has a healthy glow. When I get home my hubby says I look younger. Can’t ask better than than that. (SF)I am looking forward to my 3rd ‘O Peel’ and feel like I’m really noticing a difference with my skin, especially the improved smoothness and tightness that the peel, combined with the O products brings to my skin.

The peels themselves feel such a treat to my tired skin and Deb always makes you feel so relaxed and welcome. Deb provides a great service from the minute you walk through the door, has great skincare knowledge and the after care cannot be faulted making sure my skin is behaving the way it should be. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the TOHOB for these treatments, or any of the treatments for that matter. Im so pleased we have such a great service available right here in Oxford. (C) I can’t recommend The “O Peels” more highly. My skin has never looked or felt better. My pores are smaller and the skin tone more even. Debbie at TOHOB has passed on her passion for skin to me. Can’t wait for my next appointment. (CR) If you would like any more information about these treatments or products - contact Debbie. Details in the ad below.

Give Taekwondo a Go! words by Emily Chapman

On Monday and Wednesday nights the GP Hall at the Oxford Area School, is home to the Oxford Alpine Taekwondo Club. Oxford Alpine Taekwondo is a Kukkiwon-style Taekwondo club that provides a local community based programme for families and individuals to learn. Over 30 young people and adults come along to train in this form of Korean Martial Arts. Taekwondo has 5 tenets or core beliefs that they teach and uphold. Courtesy, integrity, self control, perseverance and indomitable spirit. Matt Punter says that “Indomitable spirit is what defines the Martial Artist. It is all about understanding weaknesses and having the strength of character to overcome”. Once the 5 tenets are ingrained they can be applied to every part of daily life including school, work and other sports. The mental discipline teaches students calmness and gives them the ability to step back from situations, and look at them before they react. For young people this is an invaluable skill, and they will find that they can deal better with situations in life such as job interviews. Physically the benefits are not only health, fitness, strength and coordination, but also self defence. The Junior class is focused on learning the basics, including how to hold a fist, and routines. There is time for the more advanced students to teach the younger members new moves and routines. The Senior class is a high intensity class, although there is plenty of time for fun as well. Last week’s class started with a squat challenge or as Matt called it ‘3.45 minutes of pain’. There are 3 grading opportunities every year where a Master comes out to assess the members of the Club. A benefit of this outside assessment is an infusion of different ideas

and ways of doing things that they bring with them. There are also plenty of opportunities to compete at tournaments around the South Island. Coming up at Labour Weekend is the Top of the South Competition in Blenheim. This is also a good competition for those just starting out, and lots of Canterbury clubs attend . The tournament fees are included in the Membership costs, and fundraising is done for other costs. Rachel Punter-Minns says that “for a little Club we usually do really well at tournaments”. On September 26th there will be an Open Night at 6pm at the GP Hall. Please come along if you want to have a look or to have a try out some Taekwondo. For more information please contact Matt on 027 432 4249 or info@oxfordtaekwondo.club. .

Tēnā koe Parent/Caregiver/Whānau, The Board is about to begin the next stage of planning for the future of our school. This is part of our legal obligations and is called ‘Strategic Planning’ and forms part of the school’s Charter. The process takes time and involves more than just the Board of Trustees. It is the perfect opportunity for you to have an input into the future of your school. We want to determine the ‘Vision’ and the main ‘Strategic Goals’ for the school, so that we have a clear, exciting direction for the next few years. Naturally, everything will be channelled towards on-going improvement in teaching, learning and achievement. The process will begin on 3 September 2018, and will start with consultation involving many groups within our community. We want to listen and gather as many ideas, thoughts, wishes and dreams as we can, on the future of our school. Your input is vital and there will be several opportunities for you to provide this.

These

opportunities will include a questionnaire, focus groups and the opportunity to speak to someone in person. The most important thing is that you utilise at least one of them. Once all the ideas, thoughts and wishes have been collected and collated, the Board will come together on a day in October for the final phase, to create the Strategic Plan.

During this

session, a clear vision of the future of our school will be developed. Titiro whakamuri, kokiri whakamua Look back and reflect, so you can move forward We look forward to hearing your contribution once the process begins, and once we have our new Strategic Plan, a copy will be made available through the school’s website and reception. Principal’s Message (by Mike Hart)

In my last newsletter I wrote about the “power” term. Another way to look at it, is the term that senior students really start to feel the stress and pressures of achieving their qualifications. This time of the year is a great reminder for us to ensure students understand the support network available to them. The first and most critical advocate for year 9-13 students at school is their Learning Mentor. This person has an overview of student’s studies, learning programmes and their goals. For our younger students in year 1-8 this person is their homeroom teacher. Like our senior students, we all have things happening “below the surface” depicted in the iceberg metaphor (pictured). Together we need to acknowledge and embrace the failures, the successes (big or small), the persistence, the disappointments and the sacrifice. As a staff we have focused on a number of strategies to share with our students around maintaining good balance and wellbeing. One strategy is the “five ways to wellbeing”: 1. Connect, me whakawhanaunga 2. Give, tukua 3. Take notice, me aro tonu 4. Keep learning, me ako tonu 5. Be active, me kori tonu

For all our students together, we can be aware of the ups and the downs, to communicate well, between the student, their families and our school. Strong communication and our partnerships will help our young ones know we are there for them, to help them be successful, to help them reach their personal goals, and strive to be the best version of themselves.Remember every Friday at 9am we run a parent “cuppa” forum where we discuss topics co-constructed by parents and school. You are all very welcome to come along.

This involved a day event where they spent 20 minutes at 8 practical stations: first aid, tractor skills, fencing, seed ID, goat handling, job interview, personal budgeting and sewing. The students were scored at each station, and these scores were brought forward to the night event. The evening event, held at the Town Hall, involved the contestants going through a

Farming and School History quiz and then each presented a 2 - 3 minute presentation about a farm animal of their choice. The presentations ranged from Wiltshire sheep, farm dogs through to a challenging presentation by Amanda around the future of farming and the influences of science. Cooks and Drivers Wanted for Family Support By Jacky Kirk

If you can follow a recipe or drive a car, a nationwide charity wants to hear from you. Bellyful, founded in 2009 by Jacqui Ritchie, cooks and delivers free, frozen meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children struggling with illness, where there is little or no family or social support, and who need a helping hand. Like many new mums, Jacqui suffered from anxiety, depression and severe lack of sleep following the birth of her first son. After the birth of her second son, Jacqui came to the following realisation: “The one thing that made a huge difference during this time was the fact that people, (some I barely knew), arrived on our doorstep with prepared meals and baking! It made SUCH a difference! On the days that we had dinner provided for us, it was just so much easier. Not having to cook dinner was wonderful. I didn’t have to ‘think’ and I felt supported.“ From this realisation, Jacqui had a very clear vision of women coming together to cook meals and distribute them to mums who had new babies and lacked support. Meals are cooked around once per month by a team of volunteers in a ‘Cookathon’, then packaged and frozen. Referrals are received from Plunket nurses, midwifes, community social workers and family and friends, and the recipient herself (or himself). Meals are then delivered by volunteers to those families. Bellyful volunteers fundraise locally to cover the cost of the meal ingredients and packaging, so we are very grateful to local businesses and community groups that support us. We do not receive government funding. In 2017, 520 Bellyful volunteers cooked and delivered 19,407 meals to 3,442 families in 18 communities around NZ. We currently have 21 branches – 7 in the South Island and 14 in the North Island.

Each branch of Bellyful is led by a volunteer Branch Coordinator and supported by a team of 10-30 volunteers. Branches work from Bellyful recipes with specific ingredients, and therefore we can only accept some specific food donations. Please ask for further information. Bellyful Waimakariri delivers from Pegasus to Kaiapoi and from the Waimakariri River to the Ashley township and everywhere in between. The Oxford community has a volunteer that will deliver to your referred family but Bellyful is always looking for more volunteers to cook or deliver meals, with whatever time you have to contribute, so that more families in our North Canterbury community can be supported when they need it the most. If you think you can help, please contact Linda McCarthy on 022 697 5459 or linda.mccarthy@bellyful.org.nz If you think Bellyful could help you or a family you know, please visit www.bellyful.org.nz for more information and to make a referral. You must have the family’s permission first.

Cust Winter Woollies words and Photos by Cathy Dee

Every year around the end of July, a local horse and pony show keeps getting bigger and better, and this year was no exception. Run by the The Cust Equestrian Group, their Annual Winter Woollies Show attracted a huge crowd with one hundred and sixty-four entries.

The Group was started 10 years ago with the aim of having a safe place for riders, which now includes a large arena, a round pen, and a small cross country set up. They hold monthly rides, and the very popular - ‘Le Cust’ in early December, which is a day for anyone at any level to get together with a mate and compete in an event that includes a low-level pairs dressage test, a 10km ride and the main event – a large obstacle course designed to challenge and yet be fun.

This year a new youth junior section, with the opportunity for mums or dads to be with young ones on lead reins, for the short road portion will be included.

People are encouraged to compete in fancy dress. Le Cust is another hugely successful day, which has grown substantially since its inception about 8 years ago. The Cust Equestrian group now boasts over seventy members in varying disciplines and levels of ability. To join up, contact custequestriangroup

Sladdens Bush Road, Coopers Creek Dilnot Sladden, the second of six children, was born in Kent, England in 1842. At the age of sixteen he left school and joined the Merchant Navy. Dilnot’s older brother, George, was an experienced seafarer who travelled all over the world and around the year 1860, Dilnot left the Merchant Navy to join his brother in Tasmania. From Tasmania, Dilnot sailed to New Zealand and settled in Canterbury where he began farming. During the 1860s, Oxford and its surrounding districts were thriving sawmilling towns and before long Dilnot opened one of the first sawmills in Coopers Creek. Dilnot met Elizabeth Letitia Coster, an English woman who came to New Zealand to visit her brothers who were farmers on the South Island. Dilnot and Elizabeth married at St Mark’s Church, Opawa, in 1866. Dilnot and Elizabeth, who was known as Bessie, had eight sons and three daughters. These brothers and sisters were known collectively as ‘The Oxford Eleven’. Dilnot was involved in Oxford community organisations and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1876. In 1887, the Sladden family moved to the North Island and settled into a newly built house in Petone, where Dilnot worked as a meat exporter for the Wellington Meat Export Company. In 1906, Dilnot’s sister, Charlotte, came to New Zealand to visit the Sladden family. At the end of her visit Dilnot accompanied his sister to Sydney to say farewell. Unfortunately, he died in the Sydney hotel where he was staying and was buried eleven days later in Taita, Wellington. Dilnot Sladden was sixty-four years old.

For The Love of The Game - Tennis Love Tennis Open Day. Give tennis a shot at the Love Tennis Canterbury open weekend! The event is for anyone, young or old, who would like to try out - or get back into - tennis.
By attending, you will have the chance to win a trip for two to the 2019 ASB Classic in Auckland in January. “Tennis provides great cardio-vascular fitness that fits around busy work and life

schedules,” says Tennis Canterbury’s Marketing Coordinator Barbi Larkins. “Unlike many other sports, tennis is gender neutral and gives equal opportunities for male and female of any age and skill level to participate. We’re excited about the way our clubs are coming together to offer this free event to share their love of tennis with their local communities.”

Join us at Oxford Tennis Club on Saturday 8th September 1- 4pm. (Rain date: 15th September) where we are serving up a fun, FREE event for people of all ages. Oxford Country Classic. 1/2 marathon, 12 & 7k runs and walks. This is our 21st year of the event. The course is scenic, and run on the road. There are marshalls on all corners, and several drink stops on the way. It is organised by Marlene Fox on behalf of the Oxford Squash Club, with this year’s funds going to repairs at our courts. It is more of a social event than competitive, with a lot of spot prizes, and most people usually get one. It’s good to see a few locals turn up, but most of our competitors are from out of town.

Get Cosy in The Library

Most people enter on the day, but for the 21k you can pre-enter by 25 Sept, which is $5 cheaper. It is on wet or fine. Info and entry forms and course maps are available by emailing Marlene mkfoxnz@gmail .com.

Waimakariri District Libraries have been running a Winter Reading Challenge. This challenge included things such as reading a book by a New Zealand author, re-reading a book you love, read a book set in winter and relax and read together as a family.

To celebrate the end of the challenge, and to promote reading for pleasure they are running Hygge Evenings at each of their 3 libraries. Everyone of any age is welcome to attend these evenings, whether they have completed the Winter Reading Challenge or not. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is the Danish art of cosiness, and is about creating a warm atmosphere, and enjoying the good things in life, with good people. A nice evening is planned in the library, where people can come in and have a warm drink and a biscuit. It is an opportunity to come to the library in the evening, read, check out some brand new books, chat about books, or maybe listen to an audiobook. It also gives those who work during the day the opportunity to come to the library or for families to come together. BYO cushions, beanbags, teddy bears, slippers, onesies and other cosy, comfy things! Oxford: Wednesday 5 September, 5.30 - 6.30pm Kaiapoi: Thursday 6 September, 5.30 - 6.30pm Rangiora: Friday 7 September, 5.30 - 6.30pm You can register for these events at any Waimakariri Library, or by phoning us on 311 8901.

Emergency Services

Police Report with Aaron Campbell OXFORD POLICE CONSTABLE

It’s been a really busy month in the Oxford area with a number of burglaries. There have been three reported rural burglaries in the German Road area, three reported burglaries in the View Hill area, plus one commercial burglary in the township itself. Some social media posts containing images of two of the burglaries have been circulating the community forums, and I would encourage anyone with any information to speak with us. Take a moment to remove the opportunity for those less honest and secure your valuables, lock sheds and remove keys from the ignitions of any bikes or farm vehicles. Last month I touched on unlawful hunting and the amount of poaching that has been occurring both in our area, as well as other parts of North Canterbury. I can report that two offenders have now been served summons for a prosecution charged with unlawful hunting, with respect to an incident that occurred on

private land in the View Hill area. With sufficient evidence we will prosecute for such offences so it is definitely worth reporting anything like this to us. Likewise, with the number of burglaries we have had of late I ask that everyone note the registrations of any suspicious or out of place vehicles and report these to us – they may end up a nothing but we want to know who is in our area to try and stop any escalation in offending.A quick recap on how to get hold of us. Anything that requires attendance now because offenders are present or the incident is freshly occurring and requiring urgent police attendance call 111. For anything non-urgent, call us via police communications. Any of the station phone numbers now go through to a central telephone service, so for a toll-free number call 03 3121050. When the phone is answered explain to the operator what you are

Fire Service Report with Trevor Ealam OXFORD CHIEF FIRE OFFICER

OXFORD VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL REPORT 2017 For the year ended 2017 the Brigade was called sixty times, twenty three calls less than the previous year. Of the sixty calls we were asked to assist the Cust Fire Brigade 4 times, Rangiora Fire Brigade 3 times, and the Sheffield and Hororata Fire Brigades once. Four of the calls were to structure fires, 4 to vegetation fires and one chemical spill. In our area we were asked to attend twenty one vegetation fires, 7 motor vehicle accidents, 6 private smoke alarm activations, 5 medical assists, 4 chimney fires, 4 for assistance during weather related events, 2 structure fires, and 2 to investigate smoke in different areas.During the year the Brigade accepted a transfer from Tom McGeoch who transferred from Governors Bay Fire Brigade and previously

had been a member of the Queenstown and Kiri Kiri Brigades. Recruit firefighter Craig Johns completed his 9 day course to become a firefighter.Brigade honour recipients for the year were, Robert Duke and Mike Rutherford 3 year certificates. Gerrard Thomson and Tom Harris 7 year silver bars. Sally Audsely 9 year silver bar. Colin Bush and Howard Blomfield thirteen year silver bars. Ross Seagar eleven year silver bar. Ron Ealam nineteen year silver bar. Jeff Kerr twenty seven year gold bar. Murray McDonald thirty seven year gold bar. Don Manera and Trevor Ealam forty one year gold bars and Brian Thompson forty seven year gold bar. Congratulations to all these recipients, a reward firefighters receive for their time and commitment. The Neil Jones trophy this year was awarded to Colin and Kathy Bush.

Here For Life with Matt Ohs

AREA ST JOHN STATION MANAGER The Oxford Ambulance response area had a steady month with 49 incidents in August, bringing the total number of incidents since 01 January 2018 to 33. A number of these incidents have involved serious stroke, and chest pain. Any chest pain that lasts for more than 15 minutes should be considered serious as it could be a heart attack. A heart attack or myocardial infarction occurs when one of the main blood vessels that run around the outside of the heart to supply the heart muscle with blood, is blocked. The severity of the attack depends on the location of the blockage: a small blood vessel will cause chest pain and other symptoms,

Here for Life where a blockage of a major blood vessel can lead to the heart stopping (cardiac arrest) and the need for CPR. Symptoms and signs that may indicate a heart attack are pain or an uncomfortable pressure in the middle of the chest that does not ease after 15 minutes of rest, pain that radiates up the neck and into the jaw, teeth, shoulder and down one or both arms, sensation of a crushing weight is resting on the chest or as if a steel band around the chest is being tightened, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, a feeling of great anxiety, weakness, fatigue or sudden collapse. How you can help. Dial 111 for ambulance assistance. Do not transport the patient in a private vehicle. Wait for assistance.

calling for. If it is to report a historic incident, a lot of those details can be taken over the phone and the file assigned from there. If you simply want to talk with us, tell the operator that and if we are working they will transfer you to our cell phones or if not, they will flick us an email to call you when we are free. Alternatively, you can request to be transferred to the Oxford Police Station answer phone and leave a message for us. The Oxford Police Station is not routinely manned. If we are in there feel free to stop by, but if not and you haven’t seen us in there for some time, it’s because we are out on the road attending to jobs. Spring time is just around the corner and in Oxford we get the notorious winds. A reminder to farmers to double check your fences and ensure they are fit for purpose, for the type of stock in the paddock. Historically we get really busy around this time of year with wandering stock on the roads posing significant risk to motorists. I’d like to avoid any stock related crashes in our area if we can. They are completely preventable. Aaron Campbell - ConstableOxford

This is a trophy that the management team award to the most conscientious and helpful member throughout the year. Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who employ our firefighters as there are some disruptions to the businesses during working hours when members are called to incidents, and the self employed as their businesses would cease for a period. The businesses are Frews Transport Ltd, Vehicle Testing NZ Ltd, Torlesse Travel Ltd, Mehrtens Agricultural Services, Church Property Trustees, Road Metal Co Ltd, Ron Ealam Builders, Womersley Industries Ltd, Colin Bush Builders, Department of Corrections, Henderson Farms, Flaxmill Builders, Oxford Fresh Choice, Air New Zealand, Acme Plumbing and Drainage, and Resource Consent Services. Also a big thanks to those who have helped the brigade in one way or another. Lastly thanks to the members, their wives and partners for all their assistance and support over the past year. Trevor Ealam - Chief Fire Officer Try to keep the patient calm with constant reassurance. Stress or activity could cause complications or even collapse. Loosen any tight clothing at the neck and waist to assist breathing. Assist conscious patients to rest in the position of greatest comfort, generally in a half-sitting position with support for the back and head. If the patient is unconscious or not responding, they may require CPR. The Oxford Ambulance Station is not manned 24 hours a day. For medical emergencies or medical advice please call 111. We are continually recruiting Volunteer Ambulance Officers. If you would like information on joining please call the Oxford station on 033123516 and leave a message.
