Royal Gala Concert and Dinner at Windsor Castle
Tuesday 27 June 2023
The Oxford Philharmonic was founded in 1998 and has since become one of the finest orchestras in Europe, collaborating regularly with some of the world’s most celebrated artists. In 2002, it was appointed the firstever Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford.
• We provide performances of the highest calibre that complements the global reputation of the University of Oxford. Our position as Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford gives the Oxford Philharmonic a unique dimension of academic and community breadth unlike any other UK orchestra.
• We have a style of performance unlike any other UK orchestra by presenting familiar works in a new light. We bring internationally renowned artists such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, András Schiff, Martha Argerich and Evgeny Kissin to Oxford.
• Our musicians are committed to reaching out with music into areas where it is most needed, to inspire diverse audiences and musicians of the future.
• We attract capacity audiences, around a quarter of whom are students and under-18s. This is one of the highest percentages of students of any UK orchestra audience and we are continuing to increase the diversity of our audiences.
The Oxford Philharmonic at the Barbican, February 2023The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra is honoured to have been invited by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra - Royal Patron of the Orchestra - to celebrate its Silver Jubilee with a concert on Tuesday 27 June 2023 at the historic Waterloo Chamber followed by dinner in the magnificent 180-foot Banquet Room in St George’s Hall of Windsor Castle.
The Orchestra has been fortunate to enjoy the Patronage of Princess Alexandra for the last 15 years and we are extremely grateful for Her Royal Highness’s extraordinary support for our fundraising efforts during this time. We are therefore honoured that Her Royal Highness will join the Gala evening, and she has indicated her wish to thank donors to the Orchestra’s Silver Jubilee Campaign at the concert and dinner at Windsor Castle.

The Gala Evening - Tuesday 27 June 2023
Guests will be treated to a spectacular and unique experience at Windsor Castle, the late Queen’s favourite Palace. The evening will commence at 6:30pm with a Champagne Reception in the spectacular Grand Reception Room. With its vast French Rococo ceiling, the Grand Reception Room is one of the greatest examples of Regency grandeur.
From there we will move to the magnificent Waterloo Chamber - lined with portraits of the monarchs, commanders and statesmen from the alliance that defeated Napoleon - for a concert given by members of the Oxford Philharmonic.
Following the concert, Her Royal Highness will lead guests to the stunning St George's Hall where every year the British Monarch hosts a State Banquet for Heads of States. St George's Hall had to be rebuilt after the fire of 1992, and features a ceiling studded with the coats of arms of every single Knight of the Garter since the order was founded in 1348.

After 25 years of building the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, we are well beyond proof of concept. As we look forward to the next quarter of a century, we want to create a sustainable model to provide our audiences with world-class music, become an even more active partner in our communities and inspire more young people to engage in music. During our Silver Jubilee, our aims are:
1. Artistic Excellence: continue to provide performances of the highest standard as we strive to place the Oxford Philharmonic amongst the top orchestras in the world.
2. Outreach: deepen our local provision to enable every young person in our region to access music and wherever possible participate in music making, nurturing and inspiring talent.
3. Endowment: seek legacy gifts and major donor contributions to endow the position of the Music Director.
4. Multi-year funding: seek ongoing funding critical for the continued work of the Orchestra and community projects.
During recent years, many of us have learned how to survive seemingly overwhelming difficulties. And many of us have learned how to listen deeply in a world that, for some time, was so much quieter. Despite that, music proves its power, its agency, and its succor like never before.
Nothing would give me greater delight than to be able to safeguard the institution I have founded.
In the words of Thucydides:
κτήμα ες αεί → a possession for all time, forever mine, forever ours, forever yours.
