OXFORD SUMMER SCHOOL 2018
OUR AIMS We’re on a mission to inspire you to discover what your future could hold: • The courses you could study • The careers you could have • The citizen you could be. We aim to give you the most memorable summer of your life!
LEARN Small-sized classes and expert-led Masterclasses enable you to progress quickly.
SEE Be inspired by our Heroes, and discover what your future could hold.
DO Apply what you’ve learnt in our intensive, practical and fun Challenges.
“This summer changed my life. It changed my idea of other cultures, changed the way I see other perspectives, changed the way I want to live my life. I can never forget any of you. I’ll always see this trip as one of the greatest two weeks of my life.” - Bella, Creative Writing Academy
Picture the scene. It’s Sunday afternoon, and you’ve arrived in the historic city of Oxford. Our friendly, orange-shirted Activities Coordinators have helped you to settle in and unpack. You’ve met your housemates and new friends, and you walk over to our welcome drinks in Oxford’s ancient Castle Quarter. My wife Sophie and I will be there to welcome you to our OSA family and to introduce you to the rest of your fellow students and our team. You’ll meet people from almost every continent on earth, from Australia to Ghana, France to Lebanon, Venezuela to Hong Kong, Cayman Islands to Peru, Iran to the United States and, of course, the United Kingdom. After a barbecue feast, and as the sun starts to set over the dreaming spires of Oxford, we’ll commence our Welcome Talk. I’ll tell you of our three aims: To inspire you to discover the future academic and career possibilities that you could go on to experience.
To give you greater certainty about the future direction you would like to pursue. And to give you THE most memorable summer of your life. Our team of staff and tutors are on a mission to inspire young people to discover what their futures could hold. You’ll explore the courses you could study, the careers you could have and the citizens of the world you could be. By discovering your future at an earlier stage, you’ll be more motivated to go on and achieve great things at school and university. You’ll also learn about how you can make a positive impact on society, and change the world if you want to (if you do, you’ll be able to apply for funding and support from our Foundation). We’re a family-run summer school. This means that every element of OSA, and every team member or tutor who you’ll meet, is handselected by us. We get to know every student personally, get to know many parents, and love to welcome siblings and friends of our past students. We have a thriving alumni community of talented people. It’s now the final Saturday of the summer school, and you’re saying your goodbyes to your friends and our team after probably the most memorable summer of your life. Tears will be shed, but remember that while you may be departing Oxford you won’t be leaving OSA. Because Oxford Scholastica is not just for summer. It’s for life. - Jamie Dear, Director
We are passionate about supporting students to fulfil their potential, and set up the Oxford Scholastica Academy to give young people the opportunity to discover their future through a life-transforming experience. As OSA is a family-run summer school, your personal care is at the heart of everything we do.
Over the summer we have a team of 50 staff and tutors dedicated to supporting our students. We have a 1:5 staff:student ratio during the summer school, so you will be well looked after!
Jamie Dear, BA Hons (Oxon) Founder and Director Jamie moved to Oxford in 1992. After studying at Oxford University he worked in the non-profit education sector, founding a social enterprise which has raised nearly £1m for charity. He is passionate about the transformative impact of inspiring teachers, and has run summer schools for the past seven years.
Dr Sophie Dear BA BM BCh (Oxon) Founder and Director Sophie is a trained doctor with a passion for teaching. She oversees the running of the summer school with her husband Jamie. Sophie studied Medicine at Oxford, and has won awards for her teaching of Oxford University medical students. She is also a keen pianist, gardener and cook!
Pascha Francisco Matron Pascha used to be a Matron at St Edward’s boarding school in Oxford, where she looked after hundreds of 13-18 year olds – so there isn’t much she doesn’t know about teenagers! She heads up the pastoral care of all our students, and is always there for a chat. Her claim to fame is that her husband used to play football for Santos in Sao Paulo, where Pele played.
Photis Loizou BA Hons, MA Head of Community Photis is our primary point of contact for families before and during the summer school. Originally from Cyprus, he studied Ancient History and Classics in the UK, specialising in the concept of philotimia (honour). In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, and cooking inordinately big meals!
Shannon Miller MA Hons, MSt (Oxon) Community Manager
Jana Crucius MA Operations Manager
Lavinia Abell BA Hons (Cantab) Programme Manager
Shannon studied Classics at Oxford, where she also enjoyed singing and rowing. Her role is to support our students and parents from the moment they sign up. She makes sure our students feel comfortable before the summer school, have the best time on it and keep in touch with everyone after they’ve gone home!
Originally from Germany, Jana is a language enthusiast and recently started learning her sixth language! After a degree in Japanese Studies she moved to the UK where she completed her MA in European & Business Studies. Jana loves to cook, and play archery and board games.
Born in Cambridge, Lavinia completed a degree in Classics at the university, before moving to Oxford to be part of the Oxford Scholastica Academy team. When she’s not putting together an exciting programme of activities for you, she enjoys travelling, and exploring new places.
