WHY MASS TIMBER?
DIMENSIONAL STABILITY
By incorporating natural elements, endusers of these spaces have proven to be more effective, productive, and happier. The mass timber production process uses less energy and correctly utilizes a renewable resource through sustainable wood management practices. Waste is also reduced with mass timber elements as smaller wood members, previously unsuitable for framing elements, are laminated together. LIGHTER

Experience Mass Timber
Platte Fifteen
DENVER, COLORADO
Platte Fifteen, the first commercial project to utilize cross-laminated timber (CLT) in Denver, is a five-story office building that blends a historically inspired brick-facade to modern glass topped with sprawling views of downtown Denver and the Platte River.
Located at the corner of 15th and Platte streets just west of the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River, it features a striking design that draws architectural inspiration from its historic and revitalized surroundings. The building mixes patterned brick and transparency in a modern interpretation of the historic streetscape. A retail wrap along the base is tucked beneath a covered paseo, ensuring the energy of Platte Street retail turns the corner. Window patterns derived from studies of neighborhood buildings are punched into hand-selected glazed brick, subtle respectful nods to its context that enhance presence by acknowledging place.
Seeking a more sustainable approach, the elegant structure wraps an exposed mass timber frame, built using glued-laminated timber (glulam) beams and columns supporting CLT floor and roof panels. Modern mass timber is made from young, sustainably harvested trees. Early-growth trees are cut into strips of wood that are laminated together at alternating angles to form a reliable, high-density composite.
The result of this precise fabrication method is strong wood panels with the aesthetic appeal of heavy oldgrowth lumber but five times lighter than concrete with the strength of steel, and a wonderfully warm and biophilic space. Over the life of the building, the project will store almost 2,000 tons of carbon and divert 4,200 tons of greenhouse gases. This is the equivalent of 1,066 cars off the road for a year or the energy needed to operate 474 homes.
This elegant four-story mass timber design was built using glued-laminated timber (glulam) beams and columns supporting CLT floor and roof panels over a 1-story concrete podium. The main paseo entrance celebrates mass timber with vertical glulam planking over concrete columns and a soffit highlighted by linear LED lighting inset in horizontal glulam planking. This grand processional design foreshadows the distinctive charm and warmth that await on the interior for retail and office users. SIZE
When tenants see the warmth of wood, it definitely resonates. We’re committed to sustainable building; it’s intrinsic to who we are and what we aspire to be. We wanted to reduce the carbon footprint of Platte Fifteen, and mass timber helped us get there.”

The Loading Dock
BOULDER, COLORADO
The Loading Dock is Boulder’s first cross-laminated timber building and one of only a few in the nation to fully integrate CLT into its walls, floors, roof, and structure. The project consists of the renovation of a 32,000-sf warehouse and the construction of an adjacent 32,000-sf two-story mass timber office building.
The existing warehouse building was transformed and reinterpreted from its original function into a creative office, and the project is linked by a pedestrian-friendly elevated boardwalk that connects the outdoors to the office environment via floor-to-roof glazed openings. This space with planters, shade structures and incredible views is used for a variety of functions and gatherings throughout the year. The interior space consists of a variety of spaces for multi-functional working and collaboration. The exposed wood structure helps define a modern workspace with an open floor plan and minimal walls and barriers. Daylighting was particularly important to the project: a large southern-facing curtain-wall system and double-height East/ West openings help frame the surrounding views and bring light to the central core.
The 25’x30’ structural grid, with beams running in a single direction, allows fluid mechanical ducting and clear/organized exposed wood ceiling plan. The interior space is punctuated by two second-level openings with stepped wood seating. This helps connect the two levels and is utilized for collaborative sessions and all-staff meetings and presentations.
The project fully integrated exposed wood into the project: glue-laminated beams and columns, CLT interior walls, exposed CLT ceilings, and structural wood storefront. CLT for the project was prefabricated and allowed the team to design unique details to showcase the pine’s inherent beauty. Columns are lifted from the ground with steel bases to emphasize their form and help with long-term maintenance. This pine/ spruce mix is exposed throughout with a light transparent sealer to protect yet expose the beautiful warmth of natural wood. Exposed spiral ducts and lowered interior walls help to ensure the natural wood ceilings remain untouched. Glue-laminated beams were pre-cut for lighting conduit to run continuously, and power/ data cables were concealed in the floor to help expose the warm and natural wood ceiling. The column head steel is minimized and hidden within the columns to showcase a beautiful simplicity to the connection detail.
CLT soffit wood is exposed on the exterior to provide a wonderful foreshadowing of the internal beauty. One notable moment is the large CLT cantilever over the main entry. This prominent element is highlighted by string lighting above. CLT edges can be seen in the main atrium for the floor and CLT stair and offer visitors a glimpse into the construction method and the wonderful detail the wood provides. The curtainwall system was assembled on-site with large pre-fabricated wood members, each sealed and exposed. The team is proud and fortunate to have worked with mass timber in this way; it is not often new construction that can expose its’ structure to such a warm, authentic material. SIZE

The potential for future development in this office park, the community, Colorado, and nationally required a distinctive solution that highlights an honest use of materials, one that exposed the beautiful structure and unique connections and details.”

Vaisala
LOUSIVILLE, COLORADO
A global leader in weather, environmental, and industrial measurement equipment, Vaisala sought to build a world-class North American headquarters upon their Colorado campus that would exemplify the company’s commitment to sustainability while also invoking Scandinavian sensibilities through design details and materials to honor their Finnish origin.
The new building was positioned adjacent to the company’s rather understated manufacturing and administrative building, creating an obvious point of arrival and fluid indoor/outdoor connections for customers, employees, researchers, and industry partners. The welcoming design layout supports a campus that fosters the company’s culture of collaboration and innovation.
In addition to paying homage to the company’s Scandinavian headquarters with crisp, modern, minimalist spaces that utilize natural light, the project is a testament to sustainably-minded architectural design. Energy efficiency considerations were designed into the new building. Energy savings can be difficult to balance with intentional design details, but the new headquarters building marries both important facets into the product. The final product is Net zero-ready due to its use of innovative sustainable design elements, such as its CLT structure, VRF mechanical systems, elimination of gas, and high-preforming building materials.
The project utilized native plants and grasses, as well as landscaped pockets throughout any hardscaped areas to alleviate run-off. Vaisala was dedicated to reducing paved areas on site and petitioned for a lowered parking ratio well below code-required minimums to support remote workers, bike shelter parking, and EV charging stations. These sustainable design initiatives resulted in extraordinarily low energy use that surpasses energy-use codes, making it one of Colorado’s most sustainable office buildings.
The new building is an extension of our brand and our business: technologically advanced, highly sustainable, steeped in natural elements, welcoming and modern. “

Viega
BROOMFIELD, COLORADO
OZ led the master plan and design for the US headquarters of Viega, a global leader in pipe fitting products. This new headquarters is designed to meet Viega’s diverse needs, featuring an exhibition hall, café, workshop areas, and multiple seminar rooms.
The design inspiration comes directly from the pipe fittings Viega manufactures. The headquarters boasts a sweeping curved roof that encloses three stories of office space, with breaks for floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior with natural light. At the heart of the campus is an outdoor courtyard, strategically positioned to offer breathtaking views of the Flatirons, Long’s Peak, and the Front Range. This space not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also serves as a gathering spot, promoting community and collaboration among employees.
The design is forward-thinking, allowing for future expansion as Viega continues to grow. “Viega indicated immediately their intention to become a pillar of the metro Denver business community and establish roots here, which was particularly meaningful to us as one of Colorado’s founding architecture firms,” says Eduardo Illanes, Principal at OZ Architecture. “The campus we’ve designed for Viega incorporates all of the essential components and functionality needed to grow the company, train their employees, and teach architects, engineers, and members of the plumbing and heating industry how their products work.”
With this new headquarters, Viega not only strengthens its presence in the metro Denver area but also sets a benchmark for innovative and sustainable design. OZ’s thoughtful approach ensures that the headquarters will be a dynamic space for growth, learning, and community engagement, solidifying Viega’s role as a key player in the region.
