Hong Kong metropolitan area has one of the most challenging architectural & urban design complications of planet. The city continuously increases its population but has very scarce buildable area to accommodate its inhabitants. Political, social and infrastuctural problems too spice up the urban issues Hong Kong encountering recently.

Our proposal takes these problems into account and ambitiously strives to work out many issues by smart, affordable, compact and ecologic solutions that will hopefully intervene disclosed problems.

Our motto is compact but comfortable, affordable but not cheap. Well thought aspects and design solutions were graphically explained ahead.

Contemporary cities can be perceived as a hotspot of intense social and economic activities. As every other human settlement around the globe does, Istanbul is also ever-changing, evolving, re-forming with its inhabitants and their commodities but maybe even more sponteneously, fast & dynamic than most others.

Just like in all other settlements, living or inanimate, almost everything has an exhange value in this mega market so called urban space. Therefore, our city is figuretively controlled but literally formed by not the quiet (wealthness) majority, but the loud minority: the dominant (wealthy) circles of society.

Dwelling / shelter; one of the most basic of all human rights, is again available to ourselves as a commodity: Something to be possessed, marketed, made profit out of it... Discourses and proposals in this architectural brainstorm are the humble outcomes of critical thinking inevitably ignited by unacceptable and crooked situation mentioned above.

Panaromic view of project site and surroundings: A wreckage of former reckless industry: idle, lifeless place and severely damaged urban ecosystem.

Dominated

by agricultural functions in the late Ottoman era, soon after Republic was established, loosely controlled medium industrial functions begin to dominate the land. Industrialization process speeds up rapidly after 1950’s, therefore valley and river ecosystem severely changed. In the 1980’s, industrial functions have been decentralized from city center (including the ones in the valley). What’s left in the valley is a wreckage of former reckless industry: idle, lifeless place and severely damaged urban ecosystem.

help of the economic boom, this charmless land starts to take attention of investors and constructors for its central location and high potential. Being very close to the central business district -Maslak-, two main motorway axes of city, express motorway to Besiktas and upcoming subway line premises valley’s both high potentials and risks in the near future.

With its nearly 40000 m2 of ground area, pre-given project site is a typical portion of Valley of Cendere: Two transit roads border the site on west and the east side, in between

the stream running and factory lots limit it on north and south. What’s proposed for the site is a relatively compact residential urban fabric. In order to create superior neighbouring relationships, spatial & functional connectivity, unusual ramps were added into the composition.

The ramps or open circulation not only make public spaces at different floors accessible at different floors, but also creates a continuous web of promenade that wanders almost entire composition.

A

vibrant urban space should contain diverse functions. Although it is imagined as a place dominated by residential functions, zoning and assigning concrete functions was avoided. Therefore, creating diverse open / semi-open / closed / public / semi-public / private spaces and combinations of these types of spaces was the main objective during the process of design.

The goal of the competition was to create a spatial scenario for transforming abandoned industrial heritage into a dynamic and attractive hub for the city. Acil kaçış birimi

Three significant design strategies: To make a humble & unsophisticated intervention, additional spaces to existing buildings were connected and composed under the ground level.

Negative and Pozitive ‘boxes’ or courtyards helps natural light to get in, creates more interesting elevations, sense of space and perspectives.

To create an all day living complex, many types of functions were composed in the project site slightly larger than 80000 m2. The proposal contains affordable and flexAcil kaçış birimi ible multi - type dwelling units for young people, a dormitory and a hostel, a sports center, a gallery, cultural zones for day / night events that act as social catalytic and an open air festival zone with amphitheathre. Such diverse functions, we believe, will protect this abandoned industrial site in long term but in the same time, creating a ‘micro town’ that will regenerate itself and surrounding neighborhood.

Here presented is the case study for Taksim square, First aid kit is a plug-in proposal for subway stations of Istanbul.

Why first aid? Although the subject of the competition was just to design a modular information hub for tourists, we took a step further and considered this proposal as a research to fulfill some fundamental & urgent needs of city. For example, lacking recreational public spaces, quality sanitary services and environmentally friendly transportation options.

Why subway stations? Used to cover a tiny part of mega town, now the subway network has expanded enough to become the main axes of transportation across the metropol. Therefore, the spots where subway stations meet the city -exit points- naturally become hotspots of condensation with maximum encounter. Apparent high potential of subway stations has led us choose them for maximum impact.

What is First Aid Kit? First aid kit is a modular plug-in and can be adapted to any subway exit considering particular needs of neighborhood and physical, social, biological and technological needs of its users. Furthermore, it ambitiously tries to resolve following needs in environmentally friendly ways:

Adaptation of First Aid Kit to different subway stations.

- Integrated piezoelectric stairs help covering high energy demand of busy kits. - Rainwater collection system helps providing usable water for sanitary services. - Bicycle parking units encourage users to use sustainable transportation. - Integrated lift for the disabled. - Wifi hotspot & tourist information. - Recycling bins for inorganic waste. - Closed or semi-closed public spaces for social interaction.

Representation of public space located above the entrance to the subway station. This -somehow isolated & relaxed place- may help people to escape from the chaotic atmosphere of one of the busiest spots on earth, as well as creating a new observation spot looking over the square.

Cross section of proposal. Piezoelectric stairs, rainwater collection and usage in public toilets, bicycle parking, information center for tourists, semi-open recreational space and lift access for the disabled users.

Along with an ‘architectural project’ a graphically supported narrative was composed as well.

Exchange, -instructed by Prof. Arzu Erdem- is the accumulation of versatile productions of fourth year design studio.

This project contains two parts: 1 A narrative behind the architecture. 2 Architectural representation of the ‘unit’ in Karakoy: Spatial product in scenario.

1 Briefly, global economic crisis in 2008 causes people to autonomously unite against the economic system world-wide. In the beginning, occupied buildings and parasitic structures were used for reunions. Soon after, a number of actual places so called ‘units’ started to emerge in many cities around the globe. This multi functional hubs of movement begin to exchange information and philosophy among each other to create a network of ‘alternative’.

Here in the ‘unit’, the users live, produce, manifest their questions about ‘current’, promote ‘alternatives’ and support the ‘marginal & opressed’. Briefly, they are global showcases for people who don’t feel comfortable with the ‘current’.

How do units function? These ingathering spaces of movement try to reveal some corrupted aspects of modern society by its existence and life inside. It was imagined that ‘units’ are tangible samples of alternative daily life, equality, non-hierarchic organization, division of tasks and sense of community.

The first objective during the workshop was to examine the prewritten codes by instructors. While we were discussing & elaborating our designs on sketchbooks, meanwhile we started manipulating, altering, customizing

the

codes

to

get desired digital results. ‘Processing’, an open-source programming language was used for editing the parameters. With the help of Grasshopper, repetative actions were easily applied in Rhinoceros, where the abstract codes transformed into a 3D model. At last, virtual model was 3D printed as a final result. Time- lapse screenshots from the actual production. Agents’ behaviour can be controlled & manipulated by applying new parameters or simply tweaking them.

“we do not look in our great cities for our best morality jane austen Today, while most gazes are on shiny glitters of developed countries, rest of the world remains as a concrete representation of human dignity.

A

virtual intervention to a phenomenal vertical squatter: Torre David -an uncompleted 192 m high office complex located in the heart of Caracas, Venezuela- was rendered in the poster. While a considerable population of Caracas lives in peripherial informal settlements so called barrios, more than hundred families have occupied first 28 floors of this partly finished concrete giant as their shelter. Although admirable aspects like sense of community, self- organization, task division are visible among the residents of Torre David, basic needs such as clean water, vertical mobility, sanitation & electricity either lacks, not in proper quality or not accessible at all for dwellers.

While Torre David remains as a striking instance of informal dwelling in modern city, hundreds of millions of people desperately settle for living in similar or worse circumstances almost all around the world. Thus, finding and implementing rational ways to enable proper infrastructure and dwelling conditions for every individual in this world should be the main challenge for the architects of 21st century. Ferhan Yurekli & Irem Mollaahmetoglu’s Studio focuses on creating many short lasting (from few days to a week), conceptual projects. Rather than presicion of work, their context, concept & content or simply the idea behind creation was valued during discussions at the studio. At the end of the semester, students have been asked to bring all the works together to compose a ‘bricolage’: In other words, an ‘utopia’.

‘Art & design factory in Industrial District’ Some local artists gather for founding a place that they can produce, exchange ideas, give lessons to public and exhibit their work. They choose to have this unique place that they call ‘factory’ in a vacant lot in Industrial distict at Seyrantepe. A neighborhood that doesn’t need shiny facades to impress the visitors.

‘The Hotel of Hendrix & Schrodinger’ Jimi likes giving concerts at entrance floor, he likes to be seen from outside too. Erwind almost always in his weird room, thinking about his cat. But they have one thing in common: when they want to meet at lobby, they use the tube slides for fast transportation!

‘The Infill’ Every housing unit has optional facades that have different features such as noise barrier, sunlight control or platforms that can work as balconies.

‘The veins’ According to a scenario, the cities will expand & merge together to form a continious megapol. ‘The veins’ then started to be constructed as underground transportation solution for this megapol. When the world gets crowder and crowder the atmosphere degrades and the fresh air essential to living beings was artificially produced and distributed by this network of tubes.

T

he 24 hour design charrette was organized by Prof. Funda Uz. Participant students have been asked to think and present a -bold- utopia in 24 hours about inner courtyard of Taskisla building, our school.

As we brainstormed, we realized that what defines inner courtyard of Taskisla is ‘Taskisla building’ itself! Therefore we started to play with spaces, walls, corridors, anything that ‘building’ consists of and while we were doing this, courtyard was also re-creating itself. The ever- changing courtyard was our utopia!

T

he library proposal is located in Amoreiras district in Lisbon. On fall semester, students were asked to design a master plan for -almost vacant & degrading- neighborhood. On spring semester, the subject was designing an institutional building as a part of master plan created earlier.

U rban information jungle As humanity reached information age, former information spaces -libraries- lost their main purpose. The internet was now what library is used to be. Thus, primary roles of contemporary libraries have shifted. Communal aspects of interaction and dissemination of information are core missions of the library nowadays, when information itself is easily achievable.

Therefore, this research of designing a contemporary library has come to a point of creating spaces with diverse features like feeling of individuality, noise, natural light, openness and connecting all these diverse spaces in a playful way.

Master Plan Proposal.

‘Urban Information Jungle’.

Vertical load bearing elements as well as solar control system.

Walkable concrete roof & Steel frame upper shell.

Suspended floor slabs.

Vertical circulation elements.

Cables carrying floor slabs & ramps.

A three - tunnel connection towards main volumes.

Relationship between composition & topography.

Continuous reinforced concrete foundations.

Courtyard between two volumes: Extension of pedesterian promenade proposed in master plan.

Right: View from inside the tunnels. Below: Conceptual renderings of ‘urban information jungle’.

The flexible spaces emerged by not only assigning functions loosely, but also creating a circulation system that resembles a web of promenade. For example, there are many ways to enter or exit the building or to go from one point to another. Thus, it was imagined that every user can feel they belong to this informative, diverse and fun communal space and benefit from it in their personal way unlike in any user-directing space organization.

T

he tunnels connect two main volumes -functions- in the complex. The feeling of being inside or outside the tunnels and the light coming from the end was influenced by Platon’s alegory of cave.

Above: Panaromic view of project site and surroundings: Idle, lifeless place and severely damaged urban ecosystem. Below: Physical models at different scale detail & Digital rendering.

Axonometric drawing revealing the relation between open circulation and volumes. Different plan schemes, each represented by different colour, literally stack on each other to create diverse courtyards, views, terraces and semi-open spaces at different floors. Zones with diverse privacy features can easily emerge with this spatial composition.

Instructed by Prof. Arda Inceoglu, Multiplicity is a mass housing project done at second year design studio.

From Romani vibrance to a wreckage: Located in outermost spot of Istanbul in Ottoman period, Edirnekapi distict now stands out for its central location & accessibility in contemporary mega city. Until recently, the area was occupied mostly by Roman residents. Their unique culture was literally forming & activating the neighboorhood. By 2005, a top-down & ‘urgent’ urban renewal project for the area started to be exercised. By 2011, the area was already a wreakage: Demolitions were completed and former residents were already put in remote social housings.

The proposal: By pre - accepting the fact that the unique social life in the area has already been damaged irreversibly, the proposal aims to create completely new urban fabric that aims to stimulate & re - activate nearby disticts with its public spaces & facilities.

In order to overcome the complexity of large number of units to be designed, several types of modular plan schemes were prepared first and then stacked on each other almost like lego blocks. Facades of each unit type was designed individually in order to create playful overall appearance of proposal.

Climb up!, -instructed by Prof. Fatma Erkok- is one of the short lasting projects done at first year design studio.

The goal was to understand and respond to the extreme topography of a former rock quarry in Kinaliada. A

The proposal contains two main parts: An observation place & cafe at the top and an open promenade that wanders the valley of quarry.

The project literally emerged while making spatial experiments on two seperate physical models: A 1:200 scale one represents the topography of valley using an unusual technique of modeling. The observation place was designed on an another site model: a 1:100 scale one for detailed top portion of site. Both observation place and its promenade were designed for providing playful and dynamic views and exhilarating experience for visionary visitors.

museum conferance hall management

Museum of city’s history is our entrie for Cuhadaroglu national student design competition / 2012.

T

he subject for the competition was to design a single body of ‘museum of city’s history’ in a pre-given site. The site was massive and located at a transition perimeter between the city center and suburban.

For us, a museum should be more than a building that holds exhibitions. It should be a social / cultural beacon for the town or its neighborhood just like, what Pompidou is for Paris. Therefore, it must not only be designed smart, but it also must be located at an environmentally healthy, socially alive and colourful urban scene.

By analyizing urban surroundings and the vacant site, it didn’t feel convincing for us to propose only a single body of museum in a huge site and pretend that this place will be more than a building that holds exhibitions.

T

herefore, we worked hard and proposed two projects at once: A three phased master plan including proposals for transportation and urban fabric as well as ecological & hydrologic strategies for development. The museum and its physical growth scenario over time.

main insights have instantly emerged: Lacking public zones by the coast & hastely transforming urban scene. 1900

Therefore, recent changes in coast of Karakoy was presented on timeline. The city constantly gets crowded over time and public spaces get rarer. According to graphic narrative, buildings pray to the god of urbanity and he / she re-creates Karakoy coast by sinking buildings that seperate city and the sea. What people did after is taking advantage of this unique neigborhood and a fun, new downtown emerges!

historic, multi-layered and dynamic neighborhood has also been changed a lot since this work was done: There is a severe urban gentrification going on and the district is about to become the ‘alternative downtown’ of city. Despite this profound mutation of urban scene, Karakoy still lacks quality recreational spaces that different socio-economic groups can enjoy being in. Especially at waterfront...
