10 QUESTIONS WITH THREE BIRDS R E N O VAT I O N S We sit down with Three Birds and get their take on colour for this Winter 21 season. We all have a favourite colour what is your go to? While white will always be our number one, we’re really loving creamy beige colours at the moment too! They’re so versatile and don’t dictate how you must furnish or style a room. You can still add other colours to a neutral base and it looks fantastic. We (OZ Design Furniture) all know that Three Birds love to create amazing spaces using white as the base and also as a hero, but we have noticed in more recent renovations you are using a bit more colour. What is the process behind deciding when to use colour versus white in the body of the home? Our colour choices have a lot to do with how we want a home to feel. If you want to create a gorgeous textured, warm feeling in your home then colours can help you achieve that. If you want your home to feel crisp fresh white and bright, then white is the way to go. We have noticed a trend towards warmer colours this winter, the return of browns, rich terracotta and peach tones. Would you use a piece of furniture or accent with homewares to incorporate these colours? You’re spot on with those trends and we’re loving them too! These colours can definitely be incorporated into your home through furniture and homewares. A furniture item like a gorgeous tan leather lounge or luxe velvet chair will create so much warmth in a room. Cushions, throws and vases in these colours will look amazing too. Your current favourite two accent colours? Bonnie’s crushing on mustard and terracotta as a hot colour combo at the mo’. They’re bold and beautiful and look fabulous in bed linen or couch cushions.

Blue or green? Green all day long! There’s no question about it. There are so many different shades of green that we just never get sick of it. It looks amazing with white and brings a lovely fresh feel inside a home. We love everything from beautiful rich shades that we’ve used on feature walls and a kitchen island, to soft tonal greens that we love to incorporate through homewares. We even painted the exterior of our latest project a pretty subtle green – Dulux Pozieres. What colour have you found catches the attention & comments of most people? Mustard! Did you guess that? It’s maybe not the first one you’d think of but it just seems to be a colour that people gravitate towards. We painted an entire room in it, in our latest project and looks fantastic as an accent colour too. If a client had a small bedroom and they wanted an intimate, moody feel, what colour palette would you suggest? The combo of the main bedroom at House 12 is a winner for an intimate master suite. A gorgeous creamy beige colour on the walls (we used Dulux Clay Pipe), a statement bedhead to make the bed a focal point, luxurious linens, whimsy curtains and soft lighting. We love working with contrasting colours, black & white, natural & black to name a few. What are your favourite contrasting colours? We love black and white too! How can you not? They’re a timeless pair that are adaptable to so many styles of home. Absolute classics! How much colour is too much, do you have a rule? We don’t have rules when it comes to colour but follow a vision board which is our bible on how a room will come to life. You can use colour to make a fabulous statement in a room that can handle some fun, like a kid’s bedroom. It’s your chance to go all out! Then tone it down with neutral carpet and bed linen and add some softer textures and tones so everything isn’t screaming at you. What would your advice be on using furniture as the colour in your room? A fabulous piece of furniture as a focal point in a room is a great idea! It’s a good way to totally transform a room through the power of styling alone. We love a statement chair that’s a bit quirky or colourful to add character to a room.

“Mustard...it just seems to be a colour people gravitate towards.”
