FOREWORD

Welcome to Oz Kink Fest 2024! It’s hard to believe, but here we are— 18 years of Oz Kink Fest. This year feels different, a little more reflective, and a lot more celebratory. Looking back on the journey, I’m filled with immense pride and gratitude for the vibrant, resilient, and ever-evolving community that has made this festival what it is today.

Mz Mallice

When I first started organizing Oz Kink Fest, I could never have imagined how deeply it would grow, both in size and spirit. The connections we’ve built, the conversations we’ve started, and the space we've created for people to explore their authentic selves—it’s been transformative. I’ve seen how kink, in all its beautiful forms, has brought people together, broken down barriers, and opened doors for understanding and selfexpression. That’s what keeps me going year after year.

This year, I’m particularly excited to introduce Kasumi Hourai, who has traveled all the way from Japan to join us. She’s not just a shibari artist; she’s a force of nature—someone whose work reflects a depth of emotion and skill that is simply awe-inspiring. I feel so lucky to have her with us, and I know her presence will add something truly unforgettable to this year’s festival.

Another key element of our festival is, of course, Mistress Tokyo’s Mindful Consent Forum. Consent isn’t just a word we throw around; it’s at the very heart of our community. Every year, I’m reminded of how vital these conversations are—how much we all still have to learn about navigating relationships and interactions with care, respect, and awareness. Mistress Tokyo has a gift for guiding these discussions, and her forum is a space where we can grow together, ensuring that our community remains as safe, inclusive, and mindful as possible.

I’m also blown away by the growth of our Fetish Expo this year—70 stalls! That’s more than we’ve ever had before, and it’s a testament to how far we've come. Whether you’re new to the scene or a seasoned veteran, there’s something for everyone to discover. From unique gear and stunning art to toys and accessories, the expo is going to be buzzing with excitement, creativity, and opportunity.

For those of you looking to deepen your skills, I’m happy to share that we’ve got a few last-minute spots left in our Weekend Workshop Intensives. These workshops are a chance to learn directly from some of the best practitioners in the world, and if you haven’t had the chance to grab a ticket yet, now’s the time!

As we hit this 18-year milestone, it feels only right to acknowledge the scale of this year's event. We have 4 major events and 2 major social events, with 86 workshops, 58 performances by 30 performers, and a stunning 7 fashion show designers. They will be working with 47 catwalk models, 32 makeup artists, assistants, and hair assistants, guided by 5 choreographers. It’s a massive effort behind the scenes too, with 70 stalls hosting 226 stall holders, supported by 25 volunteers, 15 crew, and, of course, our amazing core OKF Team: Di, Frank, Harry, Nina, Anne, Just Dave, and Julia.

Reaching this 18-year milestone has really made me pause and reflect. This festival has been a huge part of my life, and it’s been a wild ride—full of challenges, lessons, and some of the most rewarding moments I’ve ever experienced. But the truth is, none of this would have been possible without all of you. Every performer, presenter, volunteer, vendor, and participant has left their mark on Oz Kink Fest. Together, we’ve created something that’s more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of who we are, and it’s a space where we can unapologetically embrace our desires, identities, and each other.

So, here’s to 18 years of kink, connection, and community—and here’s to many more. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me.

With love and gratitude, Mz Mallice

SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION SHOW PRODUCER: SUSAN

The Fetish Expo Fashion Show is one of highlights of the entire Oz Kink Fest. This epic and eclectic production stops shoppers in their feet, engages the entire room, and has the upper-level seats full of viewers. Responsible for the success of this huge undertaking if the Behind-the-Scene Goth Queen, Susan. With a background in design and project management, and a personal style that inspires, Susan has been running the Fashion Show since 2011 and has grown it into the incredible extravaganza it is today. MisKnickers spent some time with Susan, talking about her connection with the event, what we can expect this year, and some exciting changes to come.

I know this is a very busy time of the year for you, so thanks for giving up this time. With less than a month to go before Oz Kink Fest starts, how are plans for this year’s Fashion Show going?

Very well actually, especially considering the economic market. We face really hard economic times at the moment, but we have enough people for a great fashion show. We managed to get six designers on board, and we may have a seventh, but we’re yet to confirm. We’ve got a mix of designers, some of them are returning from six or seven years ago, and then we’ve got a lot of new people too, which is good. It’s always good to have fresh people. We’ve got some really dynamic designers and I’m so impressed with the calibre. I’m quite happy everyone’s got their models organised, which is weird! Normally I’m trying to get models last minute, but everyone has their models so that was easy. It’s going to be a very exciting show. How did you originally come to produce the show?

I’ve been doing fashion shows since 2010 and there were alternative and gothic and steampunk fashion shows. I was also producing Carpe Noctum and (OKF producer) Di had seen the show and was impressed and called me to work on Oz Kink Fest. I like diversity, so thought ‘Right, so then I’ll branch into the fetish.’

A magazine is a periodical publication, which can either be printed or published electronically It is issued regularly, usually every week or every month, and it contains a variety of content This can include articles, stories, photographs, and advertisements

You’ve been running the Fashion Show since 2011. What’s drawn you to stay involved for so many years?

Just seeing the different designers that come through. It’s just a buzz, you know? That whole vibe on the day with all the models, and the hairstyles, the makeup, and just seeing people appreciated on the catwalk. There’s so much encouragement and positive feedback

The positive feedback and encouragement are both totally understandable! Have you ever seen the Fashion Show from the audience perspective? It’s spectacular!

No. I’ve never done that. Maybe from the side briefly when I’ve guided the first group of models through, but mostly I’ve been backstage, so I have to wait for the photos and the videos to come through. I guess I see a bit of it at rehearsal, but not with the audience around.

So what is the biggest challenge in producing a show of this size and calibre?

(Susan laughs)

Just getting through the day. Making sure that everyone’s in order, that everyone’s timing is good on the catwalk. That’s why we have rehearsals, so by the end of the night everyone knows what to do without thinking. It becomes second nature to

them on the day so then it’s basically keeping everyone together and organised and not just all over the place. Everyone is given a set of house rules too. Call time is around two hours before the show and I like all the designers ready with their models half an hour before the show to making sure everyone is lined up in order. I have a great team of volunteers on the day. Without them it would be a mess.

Aside from the huge amount of work you have to do on the day, what else is required in your role as producer?

Well call outs are the first thing we do. It was a bit of a rollercoaster early on, again the current economic market, you know the housing crisis and inflation, it was hard to get designers. It was really hard. It was scary for a while. The last two years hasn’t been as easy as previous years, so next year we’ll probably start around April or May to give designers a little more time to consider their collections. Once I’ve selected designers, we workshop their segment together - whether it be models, or mood, or music – and I answer any questions. I enforce deadlines, like logos and socials content or MC intros. I also tell them about the location of the venue, and information they need to know about the dressing rooms and how things run on the day.

But the economic situation was a wake-up call for myself, so I’ll restructure the fashion show for next year just to spice it up. It’s been pretty much the same format now for over 10 years, so maybe the economic crisis was just a wake-up call to change it. Introducing accessory designers and driving up theatrical-like costume designers as well so we’ve got a vast range and more performance. Part of that restructure will be accessing stallholders as soon as they sign up, make my introduction, and see if they want to be in the fashion show

What are you most looking forward to in particular at this years Kink Fest, and not necessarily for the fashion show, but for the Expo as a whole?

I do love taking in the range of stalls at Expo. I don’t get to see any of the performers because I’m backstage, so for me it’s just the buzz of the day and seeing people celebrate the kink community – all the colour and the excitement and the outfits. And there’s a lot of acceptance; you can feel it in the in the air when you’re around. I just love that no matter your background it’s just it’s all one big happy family.

With the Fashion Show being a highlight of many people’s day, can you give us any teasers on what we can expect?

It will be a little different this time. I sourced some ideal accessory designers, and I’ve been much more flexible. Instead of the usual six to eight models, they can have three to models to 12 models; instead three to five minutes of music, they can have three to 10 minutes. I’ve kept it really flexible this time and most people have been really organised with everything so it’s fantastic that they’re on it.

And if you want to get on it, make sure you get along to this year’s Fetish Expo Fashion Show. Exhibiting a range of clothes and accessories from independent alternative designers, and featuring theatrical catwalks and performance art, it kicks off at 4pm and is not to be missed.

Check out this year’s dynamic designers via their website and socials

RITUALS OF FLESH

’Alice laughed. ‘There’s no use trying,’ she said. ‘One can’t believe impossible things.’

I daresay you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” - Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Spirit vs sex, magic vs reason, seemingly paradoxical juxtapositions which are at the heart of our practice.

We are sex witches, whores and artists who practice magic and commune with spirits.

We are also educators and rationalists, moving with intention and critical thinking and applying psychological frameworks and concepts to our Work.

For many, spirituality and sexuality don’t cohere easily. The dominant religions of the world view sex as a biological, social and ethical phenomenon, a necessity to reproduce the species, but dangerous unless conducted within strict parameters. This perspective underpins much of the legislative and policy difficulty that the sex positive community encounters today - increased censorship and intolerance for alternative sexualities.

There is generally little space in this framework for using sexuality as a means of self-exploration, knowledge and growth. But is this repression not in itself a fertile ground for kink? Both in the practise (the fetishism of Mormon underwear) and the refutation (blasphemous nun sex hello)?

When we remember that kink is not inherently sexual, the intersections become more complex. Mortifications of the body and rituals of devotion are key components of spiritual practise. (WAIT AM I SAYING RELIGION IS INHERENTLY KINKY? Maybe so, Sky Daddy!)

The wonderful Anne O Nomis has written extensively on the spiritual lineage of Inanna, documenting a deeply erotic cultural tradition devoted to fertility, marking birth and death and all the passages of growth in between. In tandem with whips and tools of punishment, this history tells of deeply intentional devotional ritual spaces: acts of submission and service, power held lovingly with the understanding of the necessity of cruelty, of pain, of the death of things in the cycle of life,

From Catholic self-flagellation to Native American skyhooks, there is a deep, cross-cultural and pan spiritual tendency to explore / play with / embrace pain.

But why? It’s a pretty huge question. A simple, rational, sciency answer is the chemicals. Endorphins, dopamine, it’s a wild ride for our hormones - we can even release DMT, which explains the really weird shit that happens sometimes.

Let’s stay in the rationalish space. Psychologically, edge play is scary arousing, partly because growth can be scary, but also because potentially kink has the capacity to help you work through your shit. No promises, healing is subjective, nonlinear and unpredictable - but there are so many amazing stories in our community of integration and self-development.

Whole bodies of research exist on the effectiveness of prayer, mantras, and meditations on our external realities - quantifiable physiological changes through internal actions. These changes vary from person to person, and may have unexpected effects.

In psychology we have processes such as EMDR which no one REALLY understands, and which can untether triggers from trauma through decoupling memories. Literally through waving our fingers in front of someone’s eyes while reciting words WE EXORCISE THE DEMONS. (SORCERY).

Our behaviours are shaped by intense singular events or repeated occurrences which become associated with specific meanings which change our reactions. In a negative framing, this can be seen in PTSD, personality disorders and psychotic breaks.

But what if we could harness this? Bringing together the structures and patterns of ritual, with the visceral power of BDSM, and harnessing them in a container of intention, bound with ethical protocols and critical thinking?

Rituals are actions which have meanings assigned to them, and gain power through repetition as individuals and collectives. These can be the simplest acts, such as the ritual of the morning cup of coffee as a start to the day, or kissing your partner before going to work.

A simple example is Pavlov’s dog experiments. Ritual and conditioning occupy a very similar space - conditioning is the act of associating outcomes with triggers. Pavlov’s dogs were fed after they heard a dinner bell, repetition of this created strong association, resulting in the dogs salivating whenever they heard the bell.

For a Christian, the ritual of reciting the rosary calms and grants a sense of protection to that person. When repeated with deep belief and intention the effects can become externally quantifiable. For those without belief, these are empty rituals devoid of meaning or effect.

Another element of magical practice is calling on spirits; the most obvious example being prayer. There is a vast pantheon of gods and goddesses, spirits and demons that can be visited, called on for visions, knowledge, guidance and power.

These align with archetypes; pure models of aspects of humanity such as Mother, Father, Whore, Magician, Fool, Lovers - the crossovers between modern psychology and the major Arcana of the Tarot. We are composed of multiple aspects and archetypes; each with differing ages, abilities and attributes. (Hello Parts Theory)

Calling upon spirits / gods / archetypes is a way of calling on a higher power or ‘pure’ part of ourselves to gain the capacity to perform a task or hold a space that we could not otherwise. Giving prominence to Other/ed aspects of ourselves can focus us; we can acquire “hidden knowledge” because the subconscious processes so much that the conscious cannot.

The magical and modern worlds seem to be at odds. How can we accept these supernatural beliefs and effects with our world of rationality?

Dialectical thinking is a concept which involves examining and reconciling two apparently opposing thoughts / beliefs to be able to hold them simultaneously. This thinking is essential to leading an integrated, healthy life (Madonna/Whore complex, anyone?)

The magic we practice relies on this dichotomy; of accepting the impossible whilst realising that it is impossible. Holding magic and reason simultaneously seems paradoxical, yet it is in paradoxes and the intersections where magick is to be found. That liminal space that exists in between is a place where much is possible.

It’s what lets us drop fully into the moment of summoning spirits, communing or inhabiting our archetypes; it’s what lets us step into a dominant persona of godlike status and say and do terrible things to people, all whilst holding ethical practice and clear intentions that

may be at odds with the surface actions performed.

It allows us to do this and to step back into our everyday selves where we are made of meat, shit and matter, and are all equal to each other, where bills have to be paid and our responsibilities met.

It means being able to be the ones in charge of our Ego, and maintain a healthy sense of humility. Often higher powers are called on to help keep us in line; our own personal archetypes and deities that focus our intentions, keep us humble. For if there is nothing higher, we fall prey to delusions of our infallible power.

It’s also what makes it possible to ethically and sustainably play with someone you deeply love and respect in a scene of intense degradation and objectification; because we can hold these two apparently disparate concepts contained in the one person.

Magical practices come with their own safety protocols, which mostly translate into

creating strong containers. The casting of a protective circle at the start of a summoning or a spell to keep the caster safe from unwanted spirits, and to prevent the spirit / spell from escaping the confines of the circle. The clearing of that circle marks the end of the spell, and the release of that spirit.

Imagine if we went around as our Master / Mistress selves CONSTANTLY. (Domly daddy dom? Entitled findom brat?) Without a clear container the “spirit” we summoned escapes and wreaks havoc, the archetype takes over, the ego inflates and we assume our dominion over all others.

Playing with power consciously is potent, but not being able to step back out into a different reality can lead one to delusional, unethical and unsafe behaviours.

Our subconscious is capable of things that our conscious minds aren’t. Within the framework of modern culture our conscious minds are the product of a technological society, tied in with logic and rationality, objectively quantifiable proofs and measurable results. This can be a trapwe can fall prey to the belief that all things have already been explained, and that anything that lies outside of this is false. Within the limits of what we think we know is possible, we can find ourselves in a prison.

Harnessing critical magical thinking and consciously tying intentions and meanings to rituals and actions can help bypass this block of rationality, and let us create meaningful moments and peak experiences, move past blockages, effect healing on our minds, bodies and spirits, and open up possibilities for exploration and erotic intensity.

In our educational practices we often teach with our feet straddling science and magic; esoteric practices dovetailing with science / psychology equivalences. One doesn’t weaken the other and acknowledging both gives us integrated knowledge greater than the sum of its parts; composed of the spaces and intersections between the two gatherings of knowledge as much as it is the knowledge itself.

THE COVEN is our gathering of professional BDSM practitioners who are also magical / esoteric practitioners, or have an undercurrent of spirituality within their practices. We create group rituals where many participants gather under a number of these practitioners who through a variety of BDSM activities and techniques dedicate each ritual to a specific intention. Where spirituality and sex can be seen and honoured as a whole.

Intentions are a deeply important part of ritual and mag-

ic; and they form the cornerstone of authentic and ethical consent in BDSM practices. One of the key components of spells AND BDSM scenes to prevent them from going awry is having clear, well communicated intentions and boundaries.

As INFERNAL DESIRE MACHINE we perform live rituals in rope; our performances always have a seed of intention and a mythic narrative within them. The element of witnessing in a public ritual is powerful - like the erotic charge between exhibitionists and voyeurs. Combined with the energies released from the actions within the scene this lends power to our intentions behind the ritual. The climax releases this energy out into the universe, ourselves, into those witnessing; this is one of the tenets of sex magick, harnessing the erotic energies generated during sexual activity and orgasms to power “spells”.

What is a spell? A gathering of rituals and intentions to create effects greater than the sum of parts.

At the very least, using “magic” we can create rituals which put us in better frames of mind to better appreciate these worlds and the people around us. What is possible is a magical world full of hidden meanings and mysteries, of blessings and visions.

If it harm none, why not believe?

But what to believe? It doesn’t matter. From Christianity to Hinduism to the rich pantheon of spirits, gods and demons to the Flying Spaghetti Monster; the choice of what you fill your containers with is yours. The most powerful magics are those that feel right for us, which are deeply personal and crafted with intuition, intention and care. Our ethical choice is to do our best to ensure that our execution of our beliefs do not harm nor breach the consent or agency of others.

To leave you with another paradox, in a world that is inherently meaningless, what matters is that we fill it with meaning; meaningful connections, meaningful actions, meaningful moments.

Ever wonder why foot fetishes are such a thing? Or why a painful foot massage can send shivers down your spine? Well, it’s time to step into the fascinating world of brain science and feet!

What I’m about to share with you, was one of those ‘ahaa’ moments in life for me. Like the time I heard my first safe-word being called, and felt the instant rush of trust, safety and connection with my play partner. Or the time I was told the people squares in zoom gallery view can be repositioned just by dragging them. Life changing!

So, why feet? I give you, the cortical homunculus—Latin for “little man” (let’s go with, “little human”). Imagine a weirdly distorted little human lying over the surface of your brain, and where the body parts ‘lie’, are the sections of our brain that ‘feel’ (sensory) and ‘do’ (motor), for those parts of our body. Still with me? It’s basically a super quirky map showing the brain areas on that transmit messages to those parts of the body. Spoiler alert: your lips, hands, and, yes, your feet, are major players on this map.

Now, this is where it gets interesting and will really blow your socks off (lol). On this brain-map, right towards the centre, the feet and toes are hanging out right next to the genitals. Yep, they’re neighbors! And just like nosy neighbors in a sitcom, sometimes the wires between these two can get a little crossed. This means that when your feet get some love and attention, it can ac-

cidentally ring the doorbell on your genital pleasure centers too. Talk about unexpected guests!

But wait, there’s more! It’s not just the soft, ticklish sensations that can light up your brain like a Christmas tree. Foot pain, like the kind you get from a deep tissue massage (YUM!), or a delicious foot caning (bastinado), can also travel down these intertwined pathways to the genitals. So if you’ve ever thought, “Why does this hurt so good?”—well, blame your brain’s awesome AF wiring.

Thanks to our incredible (and sometimes mischievous) brain, we can even train ourselves to associate pleasure with almost anything, especially our feet. So if you don’t have this experience right now, you can develop this skill later (shameless plug for my ‘fun with feet’ workshop here). We can literally train ourselves to orgasm from almost any form of touch and play (but that’s a whole different article to itself!).

So, the next time someone asks about your foot fetish, or why you enjoy foot play so much, you can drop some serious neuroscience knowledge on how we’re designed to. Because when it comes to pleasure, your brain is definitely toetally in charge!

Wishing you well as you take life one step at a time, keep putting your best foot forward until our paths cross again!

With the explosion of 50 shades of grey, there are a multitude of new and somewhat inexperienced people immersing themselves into what is our scene and community. This is of course, a good thing, bringing our lifestyle further into mainstream society and increasing acceptance of the way we choose to live.

But, what about the protocols and rules for our various activities. There are many people who take the time to learn about what is acceptable and what is not, however there are just as many who do not bother with what they would think as “trivial information” – and some of these are more seasoned community members who should know better and should not assume that because they have been around a while that the rules of acceptable behaviour do not apply to them.

So this article is my opinion of how we should behave and what protocols and rules should be observed.

A Munch is a gathering of kinky folk in a vanilla setting, usually catching up for a meal and drinks at a bar, restaurant, café or even an organised picnic or outing to a beach, park etc.

In this setting, we should appear just like any other bunch of people getting together and socialising.

We should not be wearing fetish clothing or any accessories such as obvious collars, restraints etc.

We may be talking about many kink related subjects, but it should not be loud enough to be overheard by the other “ordinary people”.

Children should not be taken to a munch, it might be a “vanilla gathering of kinky people” but subjects that should not be overheard by small inquisitive minds may well be discussed. Children are like sponges, they listen – even when you don’t think they are!

A munch is a great place for newbies to start their kinky journeys, but it is really important to be mindful of our behaviour.

Apublic event is exactly that – a BDSM event held in a public venue. Here in Melbourne we have 3 regular events and though the focus at each one is different, and the rules may vary slightly, there are some rules or protocols that apply to all events. It is a good idea to check out the rules beforehand, by contacting the event organiser or checking the website if it has one.

Some events have a person known as a DM (Dungeon Master/Mistress) who watches the play and keeps things safe within the rules of the event.

This should be someone who is experienced and has a good reputation within the community, and is not scared to walk up to the scariest Dominant and say “STOP”!

People often query the “no blue jeans” rule but if you take a few minutes to think about it, the reason is mainly because most of the people take time and make an effort to dress up, so to be in a room where there are others just wearing “street clothes” can be disappointing. These dress code rules also stop anyone from just “walking in off the street”.

Really, behaviour at an event should be common sense, remember your manners, if unsure ask the organiser, and if you do make a mistake and it’s pointed out, don’t get offended, just own your mistake and apologise.

A Private Party may have similar rules to a public event, or it may not. If you are invited to a private party, it is a good idea to ask about the rules, and if there are any activities that are out of bounds.

Make sure you ask about any possible dress code as well, as many private parties do include one, after all its not nice to get all dressed up, turn up and then find people in shorts, thongs and tee shirts!

Some private parties maybe a free for all, in that anything goes – including sexual activities.

It’s a good idea to find out first, so you do not walk into something that will make you uncomfortable.

If you are running a party, then you are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of those who attend.

It is your responsibility to make sure everyone plays safely, and so when setting up, you should make sure that wipes are available to clean the equipment after each use. You should be very clear about what is and is not allowed.

If you are going to let anyone and everyone have sex, then make sure all attendees know – because some people are uncomfortable in that environment, and it can be a shock to turn up to a play party and find various sexual activities going on.

In my opinion – the hosts of an event or party should not play. A host is meant to be making sure that everyone is okay, that people are playing responsibly, that there is enough food and drink etc, and generally be socialising with his or her guests – not blindly going along having a great time playing and drinking and not being mindful of what is going on around him or her.

Events, parties, munches, gatherings are all great places to have fun, to learn and to meet and interact with like minded people, but for the benefit of everyone there, my advice is to check out the rules and limitations BEFORE you turn up at the door.

DJ BADY BEAR

A

Your journey as a DJ has led you to perform at many gay male or mixed gender kink events. How didyou find your niche in this unique space, and what drew you to it?

The underground scene has been a big part of my life and DJcareer. Kink events are fantastic to work at because people make such an effort to look their best and have a great time.

Every party has its own unique segment of our community and there's a strong sense of openness and shared experience. And just as people are there to embrace diversity in kinks, genders and looks, they also embrace diversity in music. This makes my job as a DJ a real pleasure as I get to step outsidethe box.

Given the specific nature and atmosphere of the kink events where you play, how do you curate your music to enhance the experience for attendees? Are there specific tracks or genres that resonate more with these events?

I think people are looking for of a broader range of genres but for me the music at these events is more about grinding hips than hands in the air. So deep house, tech house, progressive, techno. I think you always have to keep in mind that the attendees are also here for artistic expression and coming together, often with sexual energy.

The music should complement this experience for the partygoers and sometimes has to step back to a little to allowfor that.

Who have been your greatest musical influences and inspirations? Have they changed or evolved since youstarted DJing at gay and mixed gender kink events?

Oh gosh. Tony de Vit, lan M, Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, Susan Morabito, Mandy Rollins, Stephen Allkins, Mel Fitzpatrick, Paul Goodyear, Kate Monroe, Gavin Campbell,Peter McNamara and so many other amazing DJs I've had the privilege of working with over the years. The

CATCH

music has gotten a bit harder. But the fetish and kink scene is as diverse as any other. There are just as many Kylie fans as techno fans in the scene, I always try and make sure the the music is sexy but accessible.

Being a DJ is all about connecting with the crowd. How do you build that bridge of understanding and trust, especially in events that can be so personal and intimate for many attendees?

I think being flexible as you get to know a crowd and whatworks for them. Good not to have too many preconceptions on where it will go. People are there for dance floor expression and letting go but I also keep in mind they are there for more than the music.

From your perspective, how has the kink scene, and the music that accompanies it, evolved over the years? Are there any trends or shifts that you've found particularly exciting?

Kink and fetish is a much bigger scene than 15 years ago. It's been embraced by a broad cross section of society. I think it's awesome that within the scene you see a range of events catering to different mixes of gender and subculture, some more social, others more sexual. This diversity is a real strength. It's great that you also hear a range of music styles being played at these events.

As you prepare to DJ at Hellfire Resurrection for Oz Kink Fest 2024, what can attendees expect from your set? And how does performing at an event like this differ from others you've been a part of?

Well I have a lot to learn about Oz Kink Fest and Hellfire and that's always exciting. I was a regular at Hellfire Club in Sydney many many years ago when I was a baby gay. It wasan eye opener for me and many others back then. I'm looking forward to being a part of this festival, seeing the shows, and hopefully doing the event justice with sexy tunes that provide the soundtrack to the celebration.

Your First Oz Kink Fest? What Comes Next?

No matter what draws you – the jaw-dropping shopping, the promise of parties and erotic performances of the highest calibre, or the intensive kink education – and no matter your reason to attend – the networking, the ‘dragged along’ with friends, or that constant curiosity – once you’ve attended one Oz Kink Fest, you are going to want more. So what do you do throughout the year to keep yourself entertained and connected? And where do you go to learn and do more?

Being at Oz Kink Fest will be a great starting point for making connections and getting an idea about what you like, and what you don’t. And with so much lived knowledge available – from stallholders, workshop presenters, the Oz Kink Fest team, and the large staff of volunteers – if you take advantage of the expertise you can be sure to leave abundant with information. In fact, depending on the time you spend and events you attend, you may suffer from some overstimulation and information overload. That’s okay – it hits us all. Just have a cuppa and a biccie, and watch something mind-numbing for a bit. The kink scene is waiting right here for you.

If you haven’t already, then soon you’ll notice kinksters using a social media platform called Fetlife. Your thoughts on Fetlife will probably reflect your general thoughts on any other social media, so whether you love it or hate, it’s not a bad idea to embrace it and set up a profile, even if just a very quiet one to monitor events, and keep connected. Many adult events are constantly having images, events, and posts flagged from the mainstream socials, so Fetlife is a safer option in terms of a stable social media base.

And sorry to sound like an ad for Fetlife, but unfortunately, in terms of social media, there are few other options for any adult content with the same level of activity and engagement. Platforms like Facebook and X have some groups and spaces that you can take a look at, and there are kink and BDSM sub/reddits, but you’ll have greater access to social events, educational opportunities, and people you meet along the way via Fet. For those who want to avoid the social media circus of it all, a great way to stay connected is to sign up to mailing lists of events, organisations, or businesses you support and enjoy – that way you will get relevant information direct to your inbox, ready for you to consume in your own time.

When starting out in the kink and BDSM community, there are generally three really great starting points: munches, workshops/skillshares/jams, and Oz Kink Fest. Munches are a fairly common starting point, for people new to the scene: they are casual public events, generally held in a café or bar for kinksters to get together in a mainstream setting. Often they are organised by location or specific kink, and you’ll find in most cases they are aiming to encourage friendships and connections between people. Another excellent way to strengthen your relationship with the kink community is through education.

If you attend the Workshop Intensives you’re sure to learn some tangible skills from the presenters, but you’ll also have some great opportunities to engage with other kinksters, find some like-minded players, and (hopefully) develop some friendships. Melbourne is blessed to be home to several organisations, venues, and workshop facilitators providing quality education and opportunities for engagement all year around – you’re sure to discover some during your time at Oz Kink Fest, the largest, most diverse fetish festival in Australia, and the place where many people discover their passion.

Melbourne is also spoilt for choice when it comes to the party events. You will find an array of options, from nightclubs that have fetish themed nights, dungeon spaces that open to the public, clubs dedicated entirely to kink, and event organisers who use different venues specific to the party they’re producing. Some venues or event organisers run events more specific to newcomers. There are introductions to the venue and a brief run-down of the specific rules of that event or space. Often there will be the opportunity to learn about the equipment, gear, implements, scenes, or play. Even the most experienced kinksters can find party events overwhelming. The sensory stimuli at a kink event are not to be understated – there is A LOT going on, and you may need to rest your eyes, ears, and mind at times. That’s perfectly natural, and you’ll find most kink parties – no matter the size – will be equipped with some sort of chill-out area, quiet zone, and Dungeon Monitors to help you out.

Whatever your plans for Oz Kink Fest, rest assured you’re entering an exciting community, ready to share their passions, showcase their skills, and celebrate everything they love about their kink. You’ve made an excellent choice to check it out and be part of one of Australia’s most loved alternative adult events. Oz Kink Fest is sure to inspire further interest, growth, and engagement in this incredibly diverse and beautifully eclectic kink community.

Pauline, could you briefly describe your journey and how you became involved with AMM?

My corporate background was event management so when Adult Match Maker was looking to build an event listing for members to give them the opportunity to meet like-minded members in a social setting, it was suggested I help out for 4-5 hours per week. That grew into a full time job and although I now have other responsibilities such as blog editor, events is still my main priority.

How did AMM's collaboration with Oz Kink Fest begin?

That’s a great question. We’ve been promoting Provocation and Oz Kink Fest back as early as 2010. In fact the very first party which AMM sponsored was a kink event in Sydney. Back then a lot of my contacts came from word of mouth and from memory I probably approached Di and offered to list and promote her events to our members.

What are the key responsibilities in your role as the event manager for AMM looking after those event partnerships?

For parties we promote regularly it’s ensuring we target their promotion correctly and only promote to the like-minded members they’re looking for. There’s nothing worse than spam in your inbox or getting an invite to a party which isn’t for you. My role is also to assist them get the very best exposure on the site through the event listings, Noticeboard, site notifications and social media shoutouts. I’m also able to use my 10+ years experience to help new party organisers who often struggle to negotiate the “promotion” side of running a new event.

How has your understanding of the adult industry evolved over the years?

Well considering I didn’t attend my first kink event until I was actually working for AMM it was a steep learning curve lol. But I am in the unusual position that I am one of the few AMM employees who gets the opportunity to talk to Party Organisers and members face to face at events. This has been invaluable in getting a better understanding of what members are looking for and identifying potential improvements to functionality.

From your perspective, what are the key factors that make a dating website successful in the adult industry?

It’s being able to easily find playmates who are looking for the same things as you are and be confident you’re not chatting to a bot. Our key focus is a commitment to genuine profiles and we’ve introduced a range of safeguards to make that a reality. Also if you join a site you need profile options so that members can look at your profile and get a snapshot of your relationships, level of kink and sexual interests. And of course we need to be pro-active about the issues facing the industry such as consent and online abuse, and responsive to member’s feedback.

Over the past decade, how has the collaboration between AMM and Oz Kink Fest evolved and benefited both parties?

A partnership is obviously two-fold. I hope that through our featuring the events on AMM that more members have learnt about and attended Oz Kink Fest. And we see our benefit as providing our members with a way to meet likeminded members offsite and Di and the team are fantastic with the shoutouts they give to us. We want to continue to be a supportive partner for kink and alternative events.

Can you share one of your most memorable moments or experiences from the Oz Kink Fest events?

I think almost falling off the side of the stage during the Best Dressed competition at Hellfire Resurrection was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Thank you Holly from Fancy Piece for catching me. But the wow moment was when Di pulled me aside before Satomi & Lukaz Zpira performed and suggested I sit on the floor close to the performance. It was the most incredible suspended bondage performance I have ever witnessed. It told a story, was technically perfect and will always remain in my memory as a performance which brought me to tears.

How have dating sites in the adult industry evolved over the past decade, and what are some emerging trends?

Unfortunately some of the emerging trends which affect adult dating have been negative. Like many other sites with adult content Mastercard and Visa demanded that we remove R rated content. Another issue is sex educators unable to share educational content on socials which affects us when we want to share articles from our Sex & Relationship blog. We also spent considerable time developing a full app but then need to work within the constraints of both Apple and Google as to what they will allow the app to access. It’s disappointing to have external companies able to mandate what adults should have access to.

Consent has obviously become a hot topic and as well as at least 5 articles on our blog which talk about consent we’ve added features such as being able to report a member for sending unsolicited and unwanted adult content.

With ENM becoming increasingly popular I also worked with offsite polyam groups to develop a set of unique polyamory profile options for members who are looking to build relationships, and then show those relationships through Linked profiles.

As an adult dating site we need to continue to be agile in listening to members and improving our processes when required.

In your view, how has technology shaped or reshaped the adult dating landscape?

Having an app is now essential if you want to stay at the top of the rankings and we’ve had a great take up on our app through Google Play and Apple so that members can enable push notifications for instant messaging. Access to the site via mobile or the app vastly outweighs access via a laptop or desktop. It just a constantly evolving beast which our developers need to be aware of.

Online safety and privacy are paramount in the dating world, especially in the adult sector. How does AMM ensure a safe and secure platform for its users?

More and more Australians meet their partner/s through a dating app these days so it’s important to join one which is reputable and has dating safety options.

The key elements to ensure a safe platform for our users are profile verification and the ability for members to report unusual or inappropriate behaviour onsite. We were actually the first Australian site to introduce profile verification and since then we’ve added Validations and Report Member features. I joined another dating app and my profile verification came back approved within 30secs. To me that says they are using AI. So it’s fast, but all it’s doing is verifying there is a person in the photo. You could upload anything! All new registrations, verification and reports on Adult Match Maker are done by our Support Team as we want the members on the site to be genuine.

For privacy we offer members the choice of uploading photos to a Private Gallery where they have the option to share only with the members they choose, and we have a unique photo watermark feature which is very popular. You can also browse the site incognito, disable the online button so members don’t instantly know when you’re online. And in our instant Messenger you can leave a conversation or block a member if you don’t want to continue chatting to them. What do you love most about the adult industry, and what keeps you passionate about your work?

I like helping our Party Organisers. I am a sucker for a good stat and constantly check analytics to see what engagement the onsite promotion has achieved so I can continue to tweak it in the future.

And I love looking after our Sex & Relationship blog which also has a BDSM & Kink section with over 50 articles. We started off with a strong focus on someone beginning their kink journey and have a whole set of BDSM101 articles explaining the back to basics stuff but it’s great to chat to our writers (all Aussies and well respected in their respective fields of expertise) and come up with new ideas for future articles. A recent one which MisKnickers wrote about sub frenzy was very popular as was her articles on unleashing your inner fem dom.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with the readers of Oz Kink Fest Magazine, be it about AMM, the adult industry, or personal experiences?

Interview with Kasumi

It seems you have visited Australia multiple times. How many times have you traveled to Australia so far? Also, what draws you back to Australia repeatedly?

The first foreign country I worked in was for bondage video shooting in America. My first bondage performance was in Rome, Italy. The first country where I held a bondage workshop was Australia. Therefore, it holds a strong impression for me as the "first country where I worked responsibly in bondage as a teacher," and I absolutely love the bright and gentle atmosphere of Australia.

It seems you encountered rope bondage relatively young. What initially attracted you to rope? Did your friends also have an interest in BDSM activities at that time?

About 35 years ago, when I was 8 years old, I happened to see bondage photographs taken by the photographer Norio Sugiura and obscene bondage photos by Chimu Otoko. (25 years later, I never imagined as a child that I would be involved as a rigger in Norio Sugiura’s bondage shoots.) At that time, I was in elementary school, so I didn’t understand my classmates' (friends') sexual preferences. By the way, in Japan, there are now regulations that make it difficult for children to buy adult magazines. In my youth, there were no such restrictions.

Who were the main teachers or mentors in rope techniques that influenced you or inspired you?

My teachers are Akira Naka and Norio Sugiura. The professional rigger who first tied me, Denki Akechi, has already passed away, and for inspiration, there is the artist Seiu Ito.

(Seiu Ito, born March 3, 1882 - died January 28, 1961)

In 2016, you became one of only two people in the world with official qualifications to teach the Naka-ryu style. What makes the Naka-ryu special to you?

The soul, the rope pattern, everything!

I read that you developed a unique style that merges modern and traditional bondage. If this is true, please tell us the name of that style and how you came to develop it.

It's called MIYABI-Style. Having been on both sides of the rope, I wanted to be more considerate of the receiver both mentally and physically, so I thought about how to approach the rope. I felt that traditional ropes were often conceived from a male perspective, so I started thinking about rope from a female perspective. Additionally, I aimed to develop techniques and methods that could accommodate everyone, regardless of whether they are heavier men, muscular individuals who find it difficult to close their legs tightly, or anyone who feels discomfort in any part of their body—so they can all enjoy bondage and suspension. What I specialize in is the fusion of Japanese culture and bondage.

Many people see you as an expert in bondage, but do you still learn from others or gain inspiration? Is there a particular rope artist currently whom you admire?

Tamandu from Europe. I have great respect for both their mental and technical skills. Instagram: @tamanduakinbaku

What are you looking forward to during your stay in Australia?

Barbecue!! The sea!! Seeing the smiles of everyone who loves ropes and SM!

Is there a community for Kinky Queer Women in Melbourne?

Article credit Eagle Leather

Jasper and Lisa in their G.O.D. jackets, Sydney, c.1990, unknown photographer, Records of Wicked Women, Australian Queer Archives, gift of Jasper Laybutt

The origins of women exploring kink in Australia seem hard to define. The earliest local records I can find are in the short film Wicked Women by Anna Brownfield of Poison Apple Productions. Anna’s film was part of the Love Bites series based on the story behind the BDSM magazine Wicked Women, created in Sydney in 1988. Established by Francine Laybutt and Lisa Salmon who were a couple at the time. The pair launched the magazine after realising that the Lesbian Community in Sydney hadn’t much to offer for a couple of lesbians who wanted to explore BDSM. Francine found the Lesbian scene in Sydney quite conservative and bland. Lisa and

Francine admits in the documentary to have selfishly started the magazine to find and connect with a community of other kinky women that they could relate to.

In true lesbian ’get shit done’ form, the pair purchased a second-hand typewriter, and so Wicked Women was born! The girls had a chilled boss, who let them design and print the magazine at work. They published everything they received to begin with, so that everyone had a voice. This included images, erotica, poetry and comics. Wicked Women was first distributed from two Sydney gay men’s leather stores and the lesbian feminist bookstore, where apparently, they hid it under the more wholesome rags. Creating a magazine from scratch was costly, so Lisa and Francine fundraised to keep it in production, by throwing kink parties for everyone to meet. The dance parties started in 1990 and everyone was welcome, even heterosexuals. The biggest event they reminisced, was the Ms Wicked competition, where participants performed a fantasy based on their interpretation of the word ‘Wicked’. The competition saw a lot of negative community feedback at first, but with some time and exposure, a turnaround, finally engaging some of the more conservative queer women who had originally complained.

Near the end of Wicked Women’s magazines time (1994), head editor Francine transitioned and would be known as Jasper. This saw some of the first TERF (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists) resistance to trans men and gender diverse people being in what were known at the time as ‘Lesbian’ spaces. Today, we understand the nuances of our communities around gender, sexuality and the attractions that exist within them and no doubt the work done by Jasper and Lisa with Wicked Women has contributed to this. The magazine finished production in 1996, due to lack of funding. Solid effort! We encourage you to watch the short film Wicked Women

History tells us that Sydney leads the way when it came to sexual liberation. It’s important to remember that before the internet, all communications happened via landline or snail mail, so news travelled much slower. Melbourne jumped on the BDSM, kink and fetish bandwagon in the early 90’s when Tracey Wall brought Ms Wicked competition with her from Sydney to Melbourne. This was the biggest day on the lesbian calendar and the performances were said to be more theatrical compared to Sydney and less about BDSM.Cabaret royalty, Maude Davey won Ms Wicked Melbourne in 1991. A key player in building and maintaining Melbourne’s kink scene is Dianne Mallice, Founder of Fetish Expo, OzKinkFest, and Provocation. I interviewed Dianne to learn more about the local history. Dianne used to work at Saints and Sinners, one of the first known swingers’ events running in Melbourne since the 90’s. Then, swingers’ events were mostly heterosexual and completely different to BDSM, it was a purist activity. At these events, the majority of dominants were cis, straight men. Dianne, a queer woman herself said that her introduction to kink was through online chatrooms, where she first met a man who identified as a ‘Master’ ‘.He mentioned Saints and Sinners parties, so her first experience of attending Saints and Sinners was in 2001. She describes it as ‘wall-to-wall sex’, that had a BDSM area filled with mostly heterosexual couples. It was there she saw her first ever ‘Mistress’ and described being taken by her ‘great big boobs’. These environments were alcohol fuelled and consent was certainly not a thing yet. Dianne remembers the experience being rather eye opening and having some concerns about safety around BDSM practices in those earlier days.

In the early naughties *wink*, circa 2002, Mistress Tan, who was a professional dominant at the time, was running Hush parties upstairs in Sircuit which is now known as Mollies Drag bar and Diner. Dianne described Mistress Tan’s Hush as being like a playschool version of BDSM. Hush was all about safety. Back then there weren’t many femme dommes in Melbourne, most were pro dommes who would go to BDSM clubs to find or play with clients. For Dianne as a domme in the making, learning from pro dommes at events like Hush was how she gained her early knowledge and experience. At this time, BDSM events were small, with maybe only 50-80 people in attendance. The Melbourne kink scene was pretty closed off and male dominated. Most dominants were men and women were submissive because the spaces were predominantly heterosexual.

In 2005 Dianne was contracted to produce her first major, commercial kink event called L’Erotica. This event would go on to inspire some of the biggest events that currently still take place annually here in Melbourne. Dianne noted that finding venues to hold kink parties in was always difficult. Even today, most BDSM/kink events are held on King St, where they have old strip club nudity licences. Another of Dianne’s BDSM events that’s still going strong is Provocation, an inclusive kink event that takes place monthly (when there isn’t a pandemic at play). In the beginning they might see around 80-150 attend Provocation, but recently celebrated their Sweet Sixteenth with a whopping 600 patrons attend. Similar events came and went in the mid 2000’s. Sundaylicious produced a one-off kink event for women called Scandalicious at Abode, in St Kilda (now known as St Martins Place). Another exclusive event for women that had a brief moment in history was Subway atSt Martins Place in the late noughties.

From 2004-2006 Dianne published a BDSM themed magazine called Kink-E. Before the internet had relevant resources, Kink-E was a great way for people to connect and share stories. A print magazine was the only platform to find in -

formation and play partners. Kink-E was for sharing stories, even Melbourne kink royal highness, Mistress Elektra would contribute a story every edition. You could also find photos from other BDSM clubs and events worldwide. As online presence for kink communities built and websites like Fetlife picked up traction, it was difficult for print media to continue. Kink-E called it a day after producing twenty-seven issues and Dianne focused on her other ventures.

The most notable event Dianne founded is Fetish Expo, which was born in 2006 out of a want for a more inclusive community, that women felt welcome to be part of. Inspired by Leather Pride and her part time job with Sexpo at the time, Dianne birthed Fetish Expo at Fitzroy town hall, which is literally an expo for all things kink, BDSM and fetish. After the first few years of Fetish Expo being a labour of love and barely breaking even, Dianne expanded the event to fund growth, creating OzKinkFest, an entire festival of events to welcome international performances and workshops, in turn expanding community knowledge and exposure. Without this, communities such as kink could become insular and stale. One of OzKinkFests well-known events is Hellfire Resurrection, where you’d see local queer women on the line-up over the years, such as, Mistress Tokyo, Mz Sprinkle, Glitterfist and Freckles Blue perform in Chasers Nightclub on Chapel St.

Dianne’s events have always been about inclusivity and creating safer kink spaces for everyone. When asked about Women’s spaces Dianne remarked that as far as women’s only events went, for a short while there was a girl’s only BDSM club called Off the Cuff, but it didn’t last long. Dianne attempted a women’s event at Wet on Wellington Sauna back in the noughties and struggled to get women to come along. The next endeavour for Di was in 2007, when she opened a Café / Gallery / Kink space on Johnston St, In Fitzroy called Kink. The venue was in operation for about a year and during that time you could find Shibari, cigar nights, kink events and exhibitions on any given day.

Anonymity is important to Dianne, she admits that she doesn’t do it for her, but reflecting on the time that she’s been involved in the kink community in Melbourne, it’s wonderful to see the scene becoming genuinely inclusive. Diversity has certainly been a community effort. At the very beginning, it would’ve been rare to see a trans or gender diverse person in a kink space and now Dianne sees the most diverse crowd to date at Provocation, with maybe only 20% heterosexual/cisgender identifying. She said people there are wonderful at practicing consent, pronouns and inclusivity.

The local kink community doesn’t mind travelling to attend events and learn too. Sydney produces Extra Dirty, an inclusive BDSM party running since 2009. Another brilliant event worth travelling for, produced by a couple of rad queer women is Rule 34 Club. Produced by Amie Wee since 2017, Rule 34 celebrates weird, kinky, shock burlesque and circus performance and is often controversial. You can see local stars like Zahra Stardust, Ruby Slippers, Jordan Raskopoulos and Alex De Porteous perform at Rule 34, be sure to check it out next time you’re on Gadigal land.

A prominent moment for me as a kinky queer woman, was the discovery of Fantastic parties at Club 80. Fantastic has been running since 2014 and was originally held at Club 80, a sex on premises venue (SOPV) for gay men. Club 80 was truly an institution for men in the kink world and sadly closed for good in 2020. All SOPV spaces in Melbourne are men’s only, so to have the opportunity to play in Club 80 at Fantastic before it closed was truly memorable. In 2019, the ultimate Fantastic Party at Club 80, women and non-binary people were allowed to venture upstairs into the play space that had been limited to men only, and hell did we have fun. Glory holes, peep holes, cages, slings and much voyeurism… My girlfriend and I stood outside a cage, with our gimp in latex kneeling, as we watched a trans woman getting gang banged in a sling. Lasting hot memories.

It seems the landscape for queer women and kink is changing for the better. In 2019, Tomboy launched their first queer, Kink event centred around women and gender diverse people called Tomboy After Dark. Fast-forward 15 years from when Dianne first attempted a women’s Sauna event, and we see Lady Like and Melbourne Swingers producing successful women’s only events at Bay City Sauna and Wet on Wellington in 2021. In 2021, Folsom came to Melbourne and the board are making a concerted effort to include women in future plans.

We have been on quite the journey with much to do and continue. We’re seeing more Inclusive, queer aligned kink events such as Fantastic, Provocation and Tomboy after Dark that are changing the game for queer women and gender diverse people exploring BDSM. As women, we need to feel safe; to know that consent is being taught and practiced, to feel comfortable in our bodies and feel accepted by one another. We can thank the many women mentioned in this article who have paved the way in these spaces and look forward to what the future holds when we can reconnect post pandemic.

A performance bottom for Shibari, Impact and live art demonstrations Em’s passion for BDSM penetrates every facet of her life. When not instructing, both as a presenter and rope model, Em can be found performing as an aerialist or coordinating BDSM experiences with The Shadow Flow. Em is passionate about everything to do with alternative forms of living and connection. This passion has led her to be one of Sydney’s finest educators on bottom safety.

The Workshop

2 hours - 20 pax - $40pp

Bottoming 101 is suitable for everyone! From new kinksters to experienced bottoms, this workshop offers an interactive and open space for bottoms to learn about and discuss:

• Risk assessment,

• vetting,

• consent, and

• negotiation.

There will be interactive sessions to role play negotiation, discuss red/green flags, and discover your individual risk profiles.

The aim of this session is to empower bottoms to advocate for themselves through consent and negotiation skills, body awareness, and communication. Safety is everyone’s responsibility - top to bottom - and this workshop will give you more skills to continue your journey, wherever you’re at.

Finally Em Jade will invite Hadrian to join the space to share his own methods to communicate safely with bottoms using and designing checklists and sharing his own experience with bottom safety.

The Flow Method is Hadrian’s flagship teaching and the base of his play style. The philosophy of this style is driven heavily from his joy in flow, mind play and not allowing a bottom to dissociate. It is driven from two main pillars:

• Sensation is not a binary. Thud and sting are only two sensations of a greater collective.

• There is no “the way”. He will share the techniques and methodology of “his way”, then help you adapt it to be come your own.

In this workshop, Hadrian will cover how to throw multiple sensations in quick and varying succession to drop the bot tom into the deepest ocean of connection. With an extensive history of instruction and deep understanding of body me chanics and learning styles, Hadrian will ensure there are no boundaries to each participant leaving with brand new skills.

Each year thousands of people attend one of the many offerings during the ten day festival that is Oz Kink Fest. Many of them are new to the scene and venturing out for the first time. As an event that introduces so many new people to the community en masse, we thought we’d ask MisKnickers to put together this guide to staying safe during your initial adventures, and tips for looking after yourself when you first enter this fascinating scene.

You first adventures are likely to be quite tiring – both physically needs prior to heading out – making dinner, budgeting for

enjoy, creating a cosy space to land in, having extra time to you do plan on playing, stay hydrated. Look after yourself –

Whether you’re planning to just look around, or hoping to engage in some play, your interactions with the kink scene come with considerations, if not for you, then for those that you interact with. ‘Safety’ includes emotional and mental well-being, just as much as the physical. For other people’s safety, it’s good for you to know some basic etiquette so there’s no inadvertent blunders. And the Oz Kink Fest website has all the information you need to be aware of the expected standards of behaviour for creating this safe space.

If you are hoping to play, then familiarise yourself with the ideas in this acronym – SSC (Safe Sane Consensual) – it’s an excellent place to start creating your boundaries, and working out where you might like go with your play.

Identifying the Red Flags:

Look, let’s just get it out of the way – the kink community is not a creep-free zone. But the red flags here are similar to any other dating or intimate situation – it’s just that stakes if things go wrong due to incompetence are much higher. A disappointing fuck by an ineffectual lover is no comparison to nerve damage from a bungling rope top. Some of the red flags to look out for are when meeting new people are when they:

• Refuse Public Meets

• Overuse kink terminology

• Refusing to hear you say ‘No’

• Attempting to put you in a role or assign you an identity

• Tell you what you are

• Try to coerce you by saying ‘if you trust me you will…’

Ultimately, knowledge is your best partner in kink. Whether kink scene, it’s crucial to approach your interactions with mindfulness and physical safety is essential for everyone involved. Whatever wonderful time and hope these tips help navigate your initial

If anyone tries this shit, just bail. There are thousands of wonderful, SAFE kinksters waiting to welcome you.

First Time Meets:

Now that you’ve cleared out all the red flags and you’ve found some connections you like, a munch can be a great option for that first time meet. You have the safety of being in a public space, the support of like-minded people, and if the meet doesn’t go well, you both have other people to talk to. It can also help to have other people around just to ease the conversation. If a munch isn’t an option, head to a café or restaurant in a well-established area.

SSC:

Safe: there is a bond of trust, the safety aspects of the play have been considered and discussed (e.g. avoiding problem areas, having the appropriate hygiene available), aftercare is provided if required

Sane: Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with mental health. This means everyone involved is making clear decisions. Heightened emotions (like anger and lust) as well as drugs and alcohol can make for impulsive, thoughtless decisions and playing while affected by any of them needs be done with added safety considerations.

Consensual: The only word that can give consent is ‘YES!’. And preferably, ‘Oh my God, FUCK YES!!!’ An authentically enthusiastic ‘yes’. ‘Okay, I s’pose’ doesn’t count. ‘Maybe’ doesn’t count. ‘One day’ doesn’t count.

Negotiating Play:

physically and mentally. If you can prepare your potential take-away, arranging to spend time with someone you to sleep-in – your mind and body will thank you. And if that amazing body and that magnificent mind – and you’re simply exploring or actively participating in the mindfulness and respect. Prioritising both emotional Whatever event you’re planning to attend, we wish you a initial adventures down this intriguing path.

Even the most basic and seemingly harmless play should be negotiated. Establish safe words, discuss any physical/emotional issues that may affect the play, voice your boundaries and hard limits. Chat about whether this is a potentially sexual scene, or just purely kink. And talk about the want or need to look after each other once you’ve finishing playing – where is your soft place to land? Once all parties are satisfied with the negotiated terms, play can commence!

Safe Words:

We call kink activities ‘play’ for a reason. If things get un-fun in any way – you’re confused or overwhelmed, you don’t enjoy the sensation, or the enjoyment has stopped and you just can’t or don’t WANT to take anymore – use the safe word.

A safe word is used to stop all play instantly, regardless of whether the discomfort is physical, mental, or emotional.

If not in an established dynamic where personal safe words have been established, it’s fairly common for kinksters to use the Traffic Light System.

Green is all good, loving it.

Amber is a way to acknowledge things are getting uncomfortable or your limits are being reached. Check-in with your partner to decide how play continues, or whether it’s time to take a break. Red is STOP. No questions. Just STOP. For some people it’s an automatic ‘scene over’. For others, they may spend a minute composing themselves and receiving some care before resuming their scene.

'Because the moon is always in goddamn retrograde'*

Aries

You're a misogynist, egotistical, pretentious prick. Masochists love you but everybody else hates you. So you have two choices, build yourself a gold palace and fill it with people willing to lick your feet or take some 'reality check' classes.

Taurus

Have you ever heard of the phrase "like a bull in a china shop"? Well that phrase came to mind when I saw you last week in that high-class brothel. Those lovely, sweet lads will never be the same after your little visit.

Gemini

I suggest tonight, for the next threesome, to close the curtains. The neighbour has caught on to your nightly antics and has set up a camera that streams directly to the paid website shitmyneighbourdoes. com.

Cancer

We are aware how hot those Brazilians were, but we highly suggest you do not attend the orgy they invited you to next week. Unless you are intending on catching a raging case of cock crabs.

Leo

Ah, the beautiful Leo. Free spirited, big hearted, buxom and about as exciting as a grain of sand. You're a boring lay with your infamous 'starfish' move, coupled with your mundane dinner party banter, and consistent need to check yourself in the mirror, puts you at the top of the list as the least interesting star sign. But this news does not concern you, as you've just caught your reflection in the silverware.

Virgo

You'll meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger in an alleyway. Unfortunately he is not The One, but he will relieve you of your wallet, phone and jewelry.

Libra

We are all aware that Librans are an indulgent sign and that they love a healthy dose of sex, drugs and rock n roll. But this month steer clear of trying any new sex positions or you'll need painful surgery that’s only reserved for separating Siamese twins.

Scorpio

Despite living a life of sexual misadventure and indecent debauchery, you've managed to maintain an image of sweetness, virtue and virginity. I highly suggest you market this skill by bringing out your own self-promotion videos.

Sagittarius

Passion and sexuality sums up the next month for you, as you sail the seas of unbridled sex orgies and Tupperware parties. Just remember that you poptop freezer lid does not double as a diaphragm.

Capricorn

It is common knowledge that all female Capricorns are doomed to become bogan single mums, who have a weakness for tight floral leggings and ugg boots. Don't fight your future, resistance is futile.

Aquarius

Male Aquarius are an attractive bunch. Tan, oiled, ripped and well endowed. But you’re also not the sharpest tool in the shed. This lack of spark has left you with few career options, towel boy on an allmale cruises or man candy for some Oil Baron. Make sure you always warm up with those mouth exercises we taught you. You don’t want to end up with TMJ jaw.

Pisces

Pisces are known for being emotionally abusive, highly strung and insensitive self centered bitches. But only when they're in their masculine energy. Lucky for them when they're in their feminine energy, their sensual, seductive, sex bombs and everyone wants to be in their orbit. I think it's time to realise no matter what gender you were born us, it's time to go full fishy. Your future is female, and it's time to strap on some sexy red pumps.

When people visit Studio of Secrets for the first time, they are always awestruck by the design. From the colour scheme and lighting (whether natural or installed), to the general lay-out and functionality, the compliments are constant; but if there’s one thing that blows people’s minds, it’s the creative carpentry and cabinetry featured within the space.

MisKnickers spent some time with building virtuoso and slave to Mistress Zoe Demure, slave Glenn, to find out what makes his builds so impressive.

Studio of Secrets was never meant to hit the map due to events – it’s ‘secrets’ were never expected to be shared with so many people so quickly. Originally conceived to be the primary workspace for independent Dominatrix, Mistress Zoe Demure, the space was also created to be monetised via ‘adult’ accommodation. As such, it was important for the kinkier aspects of the space to be hidden away; to keep Mistress Zoe’s gear safe, and to give guests the choice on the sort of space they’d like to stay in and the mood they’d like to create. This collaborative process to build the studio was an eight-month labour of love affair.

‘Mistress Zoe would just tell me what she wants,’ says Glenn, ‘and I’d see if I can put it into reality. She would come up with ideas for things that she would like to have (like wall length mirrors with hidden racks that slide out to put gear on display, and slide in to hide and store it), and she would convey them to me, and I’d have a think and decide “yes we can or no we can’t”. If I could, I would build it. I get the ideas from her 'cos they are what she envisaged she wants in the place and she very good at creative ideas. But yeah, then I come in and make it happen, I suppose.’

Although the accommodation side of the Studio never eventuated, the team were able to pivot quite quickly to finding a niche in events, offering smaller, quieter, socially intimate parties aimed at those looking for a space with all the equipment they need, with the feel of a good friend’s home. And with a first-rate educator on hand, monthly workshops also became a feature offering. Soon collaborators were coming in and the range of offerings grew, but one thing remained the same – everyone was wide-eyed when meeting the space, and thrilled when learning some of the secrets.

I asked Glenn if he could give me a brief list of all the things he built within the Studio, and although I knew the answer, hearing it all at once was remarkable – the list extensive. Rooms have been built, hidden shelves installed, cabinets made from scratch, display cases line the hall, a steel beam was installed (with two attempts and a tonne of teamwork), and a rotating bookshelf was built to display kink objects on one side, and books and ornaments on the other. But Glenn also had a hand in building the equipment. ‘We've got the torture bench which I built mainly out of steel 'cos I do welding. That's quite popular at events and always gets quite a bit of use. I built the St Andrews Cross on the wall and fitted the (suspension) winches, which are certified of course. And I still have to turn the garage into a medical room. Mistress Zoe and I both endeavour in our designing to make things that nobody else has or are very different, to make the place unique. I think we've achieved that.’

It’s one thing to be able to build things from a plan, but Glenn has had to take an idea, consider than concept and then work out how the hell he can make that happen. It’s not in everyone’s skillset. So how did he come to collect the eclectic range of skills required to build these furnishings and equipment? Like many great craftspeople, Glenn began with a stint on the apprentice path.

‘I did an apprenticeship in cabin making and wood machining, followed by some time in the army. When I came out, I went into kitchen manufacturing and installing, then I went on to work in the display industry. I travelled Australia building things for home and motor show displays, and that was all that good stuff. So yeah, probably a good 15 years of my life was building things from concepts – people coming to me saying “we want this” or “how do we build this specially in the display?”. It's important to be able to understand what the person wants. I don’t know if it’s a skill or a talent, but it's a practise that you get over years of doing it.’

With so many beautiful and functional pieces in the space, I’m curious to know which one was the most dif-

ficult to perfect. Without a beat Glenn responds: ‘The rotating bookshelf. It was all about the balance.’ Following up, I enquire as to which piece brought him to most joy to build. Again, the answer is swift: ‘Most definitely the rotating bookshelf’.

‘It was a challenge. It is unique. It is something I will never build for anybody else. It gave me an extreme amount of joy to be able to achieve it. At the start, Mistress (Zoe) wanted to be able to pull out the bookshelf to change the look. I suggested a rotating one and she agreed that would be absolutely amazing. So I sat and thought about it and designed it in my head designed it down in concept stage, and then it was just constantly working on it to get it right. And the look on Mistress Zoe’s face when she saw it working is just the most joyous thing in a long time. And that was why I hold that piece close to my heart.’

But what’s Glenn’s secret? At 69, he’s now retired, but for the duration of the build he was working full-time, so how did he sustain the energy for all that extra work?

‘Yeah…,’ Glenn ponders, ‘I guess love it’. But he is quick to clarify: ‘There’s more to the space than the cabinetry. Lighting is just as important as the cabinetry. It sets off the whole look of the place, so lighting can make or break it. The lighting (at Studio of Secrets) has made that place amazing. Twitchy_sub has done an amazing job, and I think it's a team effort cos often we talk about plans and options. So I firmly believe the whole build of that studio has been a team effort led by Mistress Zoe. I stay involved because I am there for Mistress Zoe. I love it, it’s where I’ve found family.’

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

The world of BDSM is a fascinating and exciting world for those looking in and also for those who are actively involved, but there are some misconceptions about how we live our lives and what kinds of things we do and why.

It’s all about kinky sex

Contrary to what many folk believe, BDSM, kink, Master/slave, Dominant/submissive or whatever label or definition you can think of, it is not always all about sex and that is probably the most common misconception.

It is true that for a couple in a long term power exchange relationship, sex is normally a part of their dynamic, but it is not always the case. There are Masters and Dominants who own submissives and or slaves, with whom sexual activity is never entered into. For example, the straight Male Master with the bisexual male slave, or the Gay Male Master with the straight female slave, or the straight Male Master who has two girls, one is His collared slave to whom He is also married, the other is a submissive who wears His collar, is owned by Him but lives with her own husband and serves her Master when He requires it, perhaps once a week or more or less.

There are many more combinations for whom sex is not a part of their regular activities, Mistresses often do not have sex with their male slaves. Professional Masters and Mistresses usually do not have sex with their clients. It’s sick, it’s abuse

Some of the activities that we practice may seem unusual or weird or “sick” but it is a huge misconception that what we do is abusive.

It isn’t “hitting” or “beating” – it is flogging or spanking or impact play. The sensations created are amazing, it’s like a drug that you just want more and more of. Endorphin release can be a fantastic feeling, and that is why we come back for more.

It is not abuse – consent is the key factor here, if we have consented to the play then it is not abuse, without the consent, it is definitely abuse.

There are lots of activities besides impact play – there is rope, being tied can produce that endorphin rush for both the person being tied and the one doing the tying.

There is needle play, creating beautiful designs using someone’s body as the canvas.

There is wax play, knife play, electrical play, mummification, and the list goes on and on.

Comments about our activities being sick and abusive make most of us quite sad, it is our chosen lifestyle, our chosen activities, things that we like to do, or have done to us.

Comments like that show a closed or uneducated mind, and we do our best to dispel the mystery and the myths surrounding our lifestyle.

Collars are worn all the time

This is a very common misconception. I am a collared slave; my Master owns me. i do not wear a leather collar all the time, though i have one, more than one actually. My collar has a plate riveted on which says “Property of MJ” and a tag that says “MJ’s girl” it is not always around my neck. I wear a gold chain around my neck and a matching one around my wrist, and i bear two tattoos which are His marks of ownership on my body.

Some slaves do wear collars all the time, there are many different designs, and most of them are lovely.

Some slaves wear chains, necklaces, anklets, bracelets, etc, to denote ownership, some wear rings, some do not wear anything.

Being owned and collared, the feelings come from deep down in your heart, i do not need

to wear a collar all the time to know who and what i am, it’s there always, in my heart.

I love my collar and i love wearing it but i do not NEED to wear it, it is the outward symbol of what lies deep within my heart and soul, the knowledge that He owns me, that i am His.

A slave or submissive has no say

Communication is one of the cornerstones for a successful Power Exchange relationship. There should be a lot of discussion before entering into the relationship and things that should be discussed are rules, consequences of breaking the rules, limits, both hard and soft ones, and a very clear picture of how the relationship will work should be created so both Master and sub know where they stand.

We are allowed to have an opinion, most slaves and submissives i know are not weak little doormats who will not say boo, most of them are strong women or men, who have opinions, who have a voice and will use that voice with confidence. We accept the rules that are made for us, we accept that someone else is in control of our world, but mostly we are allowed to voice an opinion or ask questions if we do not understand.

If my Master asks me to do something that i don’t want to do, or i think i can’t do, then i speak to Him – He listens to my concerns, He never just dismisses me, and i accept His judgement no matter what, because i trust Him to care for me and my needs. If He feels i can do it, then i give it my best shot FOR HIM, and i do that willingly knowing that He would not ask me if it was not right.

Our relationships are really not much different to any other relationship, except for the fact that one is in control and one is not, one is the leader, one is the follower, the leader has accepted responsibility for someone else’s life, the follower has accepted that he or she is NOT the leader, and trusts the other person to take care of his or her life, health, emotional and physical wellbeing.

We all still have to go shopping, pay bills, see family, cope with everyday life.

Serving your Master

The word “serve” is often misconstrued – many folk think that to serve means to have sex, or give a blow job “on your knees girl and serve

me” is a common saying amongst new inexperienced Doms who think that’s what it means to be a Dom.

To serve really means to do your Master’s bidding, to do what He asks you, when He asks you. It is about making your Master’s life easier so you serve, you do what you are told. Serve can mean anything from getting drinks, making a meal, doing dishes, helping at an event, driving the car – anything you do is serving.

All Masters have a harem of girls

Another misconception is that a Master always has lots of girls like a harem and he sleeps with all of them and they all sleep together and everyone lives together in a house with him as the boss and all the others have a pecking order.

Some Dominants may have more than one, some may have more than two, my Master had 4 submissives when i met Him, i became number 5. But He did not sleep with any of them, and they did not live with Him either.

There are “houses” which exist exactly the way i have described, but it is not the normal way for most of us.

Slaves are kept naked and in chains

Oh if this were true! I do not know a single slave who is kept naked and chained up unless needed.

I do know slaves who go to bed in chains, or are chained to the bed.

I know slaves that sometimes are required to be naked at home, but not all the time – let’s face it, it is just not practical!

There are probably more misconceptions than just that i have listed here, but these appear to be the most common ones.

As always this is just my own opinion – yours may be different

Autism and Kink:

Why Are So Many Autistic People Kinky?

Authors Note:

You’ll notice that throughout this piece I use identity-first language, ie: autistic person, as opposed to person-first language ie: a person with autism. The community prefers this way of referring to autistics as autism is often an integral part of our experience of being in the world.

I also talk a lot about kink in the sexual sense. Of course, many people, both autistic and not, engage in kink in non-sexual ways, and all things spoken about in this piece are applicable in sexual and nonsexual settings.

A 2018 study on the BDSM community found that the autistic population in kink is five times more prevalent than the amount in the general population. What’s more striking, when finding participants for the study, there was no mention of autism in any of the advertising materials (Boucher, n.d.).

Society at large has a long history of infantilising autism and other disabilities, insisting on the idea that anyone who isn’t able-bodied and neurotypical is naive and couldn’t possibly be a sexual creature at all! The fact that there is such a high percentage of autistic people in the BDSM community not only shows this idea as mythology, but also shows this community as somewhat attractive to autistic people.

To understand the appeal of kink to an autistic, you

need to understand what autism is and how it affects us. Autism or Autism Spectrum disorder is a lifelong developmental disorder. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) describes some key experiences of autism are:

- Deficits in social communication and interaction

- Restricted, repetitive behaviours, interests, or activities

- Sensory aversion or sensory-seeking behaviour.

As it is a spectrum, autism looks different in everyone (just as no allistic [non-autistic] is the same). With this in mind, let’s break down some of the factors that make kink particularly inviting to autistic people.

Explicit Communication

More often than not, there is a sense of subtlety in vanilla people – innuendo and metaphors are commonly used to describe (and ask for) what you’d like to do with another person. For many autistic people, this communication style is practically useless; some of us may be more skilled in these social nuances, but many of us find the non-direct language of vanilla courtship a minefield to navigate. Here is an all-too-common conversation that may happen when an allistic tries to invite an autistic to have sex.

Allistic: Would you like to come inside and have some coffee?

Autistic: Oh, thank you, but it’s too late for coffee for me - I won’t be able to sleep.

Allistic: Oh... Okay… Would you like to come inside anyway? We could watch a movie?

Autistic: Um… We just finished our date, so I’m gonna have to say no this time; maybe we can watch something next time?

Allistic: Uh, okay.

What happened here was the allistic wanted to have sex without saying, ‘Would you like to have sex?’ and the autistic did not pick up on this. Instead, they took the questions for their literal meaning.

This kind of beating around the bush does happen in BDSM relationships, but plain and honest language is also highly valued in the community when discussing what you want to do. Negotiating a scene lays out all the pieces for the autistic mind; there is no question of ‘Okay, you say we’re gonna hang out and “chill”... What does that mean?’ Instead, it’s ‘Okay, so you’d like me to spank your ass and then degrade you verbally while pegging you. What things do you like being called when being degraded?’ And so on, and so forth.

Stimulation

A significant factor that draws many autistic people to kink is that it allows for the incorporation of more stimulation or less than you might see in vanilla intimacy.

Autistic people use self-stimulatory behaviour – commonly known as ‘stimming’ – as a way to self-regulate emotions and sensations (Kapp et al., 2019). Everyone does this, including allistics: think of a time that you were impatient with someone in front of you, and you found yourself bouncing your leg or foot to get some of that impatient energy out; that’s stimming! For autistic people, it’s a physical need to self-regulate, and often we need to do it more than allistics. Stimming presents differently but some common presentations are making noise, body movement, listening to things, looking at visually interesting things, or feeling certain textures. And kink is a very fun and sexy way to meet these needs.

The rhythmic hits in an impact scene are perfect for someone who may need more bodily sensation.

Repeating degrading or praising phrases over and over can be so satisfying to someone who verbally stims.

Watching hot wax drip on the body can be a mesmerising visual stim.

The connection to stimulation doesn’t end there. All lovers of sensory deprivation know that what can be given can also be taken away. Autistic people take in a dizzying amount of information all the time; because of this, sounds can be too loud, light too bright, and bodily sensations too much. We get overstimulated easily, and in vanilla, intimacy this can be challenging to navigate when things are feeling way too much to

handle. BDSM provides easy, accessible, and accepted ways to reduce that input through blindfolds and headphones, and what is bondage if not a sexier version of a weighted blanket?

Acceptance of Inappropriateness

Due to many reasons, autistic people may not react to things in the same way an allistic person might. Those of us with flat affect may not express our feelings on our faces very well, many of us are non-verbal or have periods of going non-verbal, and our stims may cause us to move or make a noise that is unexpected in the context.

Within the kink community, it’s well understood that people will react to things differently. The noise someone makes when having a fantastically great time may sound exactly like another person’s horrible time. If someone goes non-verbal after a scene, it’s hardly ever questioned other than a check-in to ensure they’re okay, as we know people need different things.

As someone with a fairly flat affect at times, I’ve personally noticed very different reactions from kinky allistic people when I explain this as opposed to vanilla allistics. Kinky people have taken it on board and established ways of checking in if my lack of facial expression concerns them. Vanilla people have followed up by asking if I even like them if I’m not going to emote with my face when having sex.

Obviously, these examples are very general and are only some people’s reactions, and not all kinky people will be understanding of these things, and not all vanilla people will be put off. Everyone is different, and communities are full of very diverse experiences. Considering that autistics are represented five times more in the BDSM community than in the general population it would make sense to assume that something draws us to this community. Also, suppose we continue to grow as a community with autistics as a significant population factor? In that case, the community will continue to develop to be more socially, emotionally, and practically accepting of autistic ways of expression.
