Just because you’re a mum doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be

allowed the occasional treat

Young

MUMS go for it!

The concept of choosing, understanding and taking full advantage of a smart phone can be a daunting task for many people. With the help of Denise van Outen and Three, the prospect is less overwhelming.

After giving birth to her first child, Betsy at the age of 35 in May 2010, Denise van Outen set about learning about the advantages of owning a smart phone. She had been told about the technology’s uses by her many friends and decided to invest in one herself. Partnering up with Three, the fastest growing mobile network in the country, Denise has been traveling up and down the country, spreading the news and uses of a smart phone to mums everywhere. “Being a new mum, it felt like a really good collaboration. Three have come up with the All You Can Eat data, which is great, encouraging new mums to use smart phones to see how much time they can save. I was

4

OCTOBER HALF TERM 2011 ISSUE

struggling a lot during the early days, trying to juggle being a busy, working mum, running the house and getting back to work. I learnt of the benefits of smart phones for myself, with the amazing time saving opportunities and convenience of the smart phone.” Three have published figures that say 82 per cent of mums now have less than one hour of ‘me time’ every day. By using a smart phone, mums can win back up to 135 hours a year. By using the capabilities of a smart phone, you can check your emails, do the food shopping, keep in touch with your friends via social media and even buy yourself a few treats too. “I love fashion. It’s something I do online all the time. I’m always browsing fashion websites like ASOS to check out the latest trends. I buy most of Betsy’s essentials and baby clothes online too. The only problem is trying to hide all the boxes from my

husband! He comes home and says, “Have you been shopping again?” I have to try to arrange deliveries when he’s not home! All mums must remember to take time to treat themselves. Just because you’re a mum doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be allowed the occasional treat.“ Celebrities are always asked how they get back in to such great shape after having a baby. Denise says, “It’s much harder if you don’t start until after you’ve had the baby. While you’re pregnant, listen to what your body wants and try to find a healthy alternative. It’s all about everything in moderation. When I was pregnant, I was craving carbs. It would have been very easy to just sit and eat lots of chips, but instead I went for whole-wheat pasta. In the early stages, I was craving cheddar cheese, which was obviously going to pile on the pounds. I spoke to my nutritionist who recommended

drinking more milk and taking a calcium supplement. There are alternatives to the foods that you are craving. The whole thing about eating for two is a complete myth. I think people just use that as an excuse!”

for Breast Cancer Care. I was with other women who were going through treatment for breast cancer and had young children. I felt like, if I was being criticised, so were they, and that was not fair.”

A lot of women struggle with the issue of when to get back to work after having a baby. Denise became the centre of a rather public debate when she went back to work. She felt the criticism was very unfair: “I received quite a lot of criticism when I went back to work. I have a lot of friends who had to go back to work as a necessity. I respect women who choose to stay at home and be stay-at-home mums, but I’ve always worked and I love working. I’m really lucky that the job that I do allows me to work and still see Betsy loads. When I first went back to work, I went in to Legally Blonde in the West End. I was with Betsy all day and I was working at night after she was asleep. At the time of the criticism, I was on a trek in Peru to raise money

As far as a multi-tasking mum, Denise van Outen is about as close as you can get. “I’ve just finished doing a film called Run For Your Wife. It’s a British comedy, out next year. I’ve also just started doing my narration for The Only Way Is Essex.” How does she manage to fit in all that work and be a wife and mum? “Having a smart phone certainly helps! The technology is amazing for saving your valuable time. When I’m on the train, going to work, I can be checking my emails, doing the food shopping, booking our family holiday. I can do all the things that I used to have to do at home on a computer while I’m sat on a train. It’s great!” Denise is currently working on her second book, Mumalicious

We always aim High at Heritage By combining an extensive curriculum, innovative timetabling and close relationships with other providers, and with strong, improving teaching and support expertise of our own, Heritage High School is able to provide a challenging learning experience that is very unique. We have successfully introduced strategies that have resulted in accelerating the achievements of the hard-working, the able and the well-motivated. Our pedigree of fast-tracking students making better than average progress is both innovative and successful. In recent years we have had more and more students who choose to go, and succeed in going to University, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This year’s record breaking GCSE results of 68% of Heritage High School students achieving 5 good GCSE passes represents a 100% increase in the amount of learners that achieved the pass rate over a period of 4 years. It is notable that these Headteacher Don Spencer pictured with current Year 11 passes are all in subjects that will enable progression towards further study students who all obtained 4 GCSEs in their year 10 school year in appropriate courses in other local or national institutions, as the courses we offer are universally recognised. Our targeted student tracking, mentoring and intervention programmes are now embedded in our practice. They are designed to address any potential underachievement. Don Spencer, Headteacher
