O T S E O H S FROM

A E B R BA

Jim Driscoll’s life story is truly a tale of rags to riches. 30 years ago, he was busy finding new homes for unwanted and neglected toys that were bought as Christmas presents. He was a small-town man with big ideas. One day, he had an idea about a group of shoes and boots that had adventures. This idea became The Shoe People, the international hit of the late 1980s. Now, Jim is once again working hard, developing new stories for children like you. Working with illustrator Rob Lee who drew Fireman Sam, SuperTed and, of course, The Shoe People, Jim has invented The Barbearians.

The Barbearians is a series about a group of teddy bears who come to life in an old American theme park. We met up with Jim to learn more about The Barbearians, his processes of writing and his plans for the future. What is The Barbearians about? There’s a shoot-em-up stall in this old, run-down theme park where the prizes are old teddy bears that are falling apart. Their eyes are falling off, their stitching is coming undone, and their stuffing is falling out. They’re unloved. They have been discarded and thrown into a storeroom. One night, during a storm, a lightning bolt strikes the bears and they come to life. They shake themselves off and begin their adventure. Life is not all fun and games for the Barbearians though. Throughout the 4

series, the bears come across rivals and enemies who are out to destroy them. The Gangster Hamsters and the Cosmic Clowns make it their mission to ensure that the Barbearians don’t step on their turf. It’s an action series for boys and girls age six upwards. Do you base your characters on real people?

us Jim Driscoll MBE tells about his latest project Clockwise from left: Atilla, The Barbearians with The Mighty Genghis second from left, Atilla in shot, Jim with his Grandchildren George, Henry and Oscar.

Some of my characters have been given names of people and places that are loved by me. I did a series called Oggies, which was set in Cornwall so all of the characters had Cornish names like Bondi Bruce and Fistral Freddie. After The Shoe People, did you feel pressure to come back with something even bigger and better? After The Shoe People, I took some time off. I dabbled in the music business, did some property development and started up a company that deals with rights for cartoons. After a while though, I got itchy feet. In 2008 I got a phone call from an old friend who was interested in what I was up to. I told him about this idea that was in my head about these teddy bears that live in an old theme park and he loved it. We got the concept together, I got in touch with Rob Lee who drew The Shoe People, and it all started to come together. There is always pressure to do well in this industry: if people don’t like what you have written or drawn, they will

ARY M I PR MES TI OR H AUT USIVE L EXC tell you. If you put yourself out there though, many doors can be opened. Where do you get your ideas from for your stories? With The Shoe People, the idea had been knocking around in my head for a long time. At the time, I was working with mail order surplus, selling unwanted toys. The idea came to me about old,

unwanted shoes and boots that had been abandoned and had to create lives of their own. The lead character, Trampy, was the one who had been there and done everything. If any of the other shoes had a problem, they went to Trampy. Then there was Charlie, Sergeant Major, Margot and Wellington. Once you get an idea in your head for one character or one storyline, the

S N A I R A told him about The Shoe People. It was my gift to the children of the Soviet Union. At the time, there was a shortage of paper to print books, so they released enough paper to print eight million Shoe People books. We gifted them more paper and ended up selling over 20 million books. The Shoe People was the first children’s series from the West to have worked in the Soviet Union. It was a special time, a very emotional time. It taught me that you can’t take anything for granted. Do people approach you for help with their stories and ideas?

rest just tends to fall into place. Do you feel a duty to help others develop their ideas, now that you have had such success with your own? Yes, I do. I have a close relationship with the Visual Arts School at Birmingham City University, giving the students a platform from which they can develop and grow their

ideas. I have also recently set up a company called Awesome Brands. We aim to find young creative designers and artists and help them on their way. They will submit designs to us, and we will help them sell their work on the Awesome Brands website and put them in touch with the right people to help them progress even further. I also like to include my grandchildren. They are

my testing panel. When I have an idea, I run it passed them. They also help me to choose the colours and clothes for the characters. They are great judges. Speaking of your generosity, you gave The Shoe People to the Soviet Union. How did that relationship come about? I met the President of the Soviet Union, President Gorbachev and

FOR THOUSANDS MORE IDEAS VISIT WWW.PRIMARYTIMES.NET

I am constantly getting phone calls and emails from people. Most people have a good idea at least once in their life: the trick is recognising it and knowing what to do with it. If people need a helping hand in getting their idea off the ground, I am happy to help. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of some very generous people. I owe a lot to those people. Jim is currently working on a pilot episode for The Barbearians. Keep your eyes and ears open for more news. We will keep you posted!

H S A L SP Do you know how to look after your little ones while they are swimming? Do you know your red flag from your rip current? Fear not. Primary Times is here to give you a guide to staying safe in the water this summer. Safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to playing or swimming in or around water. Whether it’s in a swimming pool or at the seaside, being safe and knowing what to do is vital. Just read our helpful guide. At the seaside: • Parents: Always supervise children when they are in, or near water

enough to pull you under the water

• Swim parallel to, and not away from, the shore when swimming long distances

• If it is safe to help, without putting yourself in danger, try to reach the person with a stick or long object. Lie down at the water’s edge to avoid being pulled in and try to reach the person

• Watch out for jellyfish, urchins, coral, or any other dangerous elements that could injure you At the pool: • Always wait an hour after eating before swimming • Make sure you have access to a phone when near water in case of emergencies

• Always read the conditions board, usually available at the lifeguard station, to check for tide times

• Always test the water depth before jumping or diving in. It is safer to lower yourself into the water from a sitting position, even if you can see the bottom

• Never swim alone, always take a friend. It’s best to swim in groups of three. If one person gets into trouble, one person can go for help while the other

SAFE

person stays with the person in trouble

• Only swim in the designated safe areas indicated between red and yellow flags

• Never swim if the conditions are rough

TAY S T U B

• Leave the water if you start to feel cold • If you feel unsafe at any point, call out to the lifeguard If you or anyone else gets into trouble: • Dial 999, ask for the police at inland water sites or the coastguard if you are at the beach • Always put your own safety first. Never jump in to help, as there is a risk a drowning person may be strong

• Test the depth of the water with a stick before entering the water, to ensure the depth is safe for you. Use the stick to reach out to the person Get one-to-one swimming lessons at your local leisure centre with Derbyshire Dales Council. For just £10, adults and children can receive expert tuition in the fun and friendly environment of Derbyshire Dales swimming pools: Ashbourne Leisure Centre, Bakewell Swimming Pool and Wirksworth Leisure Centre. The brand new Arc Leisure in Matlock is opening in Summer 2011, showing off the 25 metre, eight lane pool which is boasting the best pool views in the UK, looking down the Derwent Valley. Before you get in the pool this summer, sign up for some lessons. Swimming is much more fun when you’re safe. Visit www. derbyshiredales.gov.uk for information on how to book.
