2 1 20 As Britain prepares for the arrival of the 2012 Olympics in August, there is another sporting event for us to look forward to … Sport Relief! Men, women, children and celebrities all get together in the world of sport to help raise money for people living tough lives in the UK and across the world. This year, Sport Relief is taking place from Friday March 23 to Sunday March 25. With over a million people expected to join in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, you too can get involved
This year, David Walliams kicked off Sport Relief with a splash when he announced he would swim the Thames for the charity. He embarked on the epic 140mile swim down the stinky, dirty River Thames, picking up a tummy bug and other illnesses on the way. Nevertheless, he completed his amazing challenge in just eight days and raised more than £1 million.

Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton has become a wonderful ambassador for Sport Relief having kayaked the 2000 miles of the Amazon River and walked across a tightrope suspended between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station. This year, Helen has managed to go one step further, again. On January 4, Helen set off on her Polar Challenge to cross 500 miles by ski, kite-ski and bike to reach the South Pole. We will see how Helen fared on the live show. What will she do next year? But, you don’t have to go to the extreme of swimming the Thames or skiing to the South Pole to raise money for Sport Relief! You can do your bit by simply walking one mile. For just £6 for adults and £3 for children, you can enter the Sport Relief Mile. You will be sent a pack with sponsor forms for you to collect sponsorships

Reading a book is one of the most fulfilling things that you can do with your day. Finding your favourite book is something that a lot of people don’t do until late on in their life. Have you found your favourite book yet? March 1 is World Book Day, where the written word is celebrated. World Book Day is recognised in over 100 countries around the world. The idea behind World Book Day began more than 90 years ago in Catalonia, Spain, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity of owning a book of their own. On World Book Day, certain books are available for £1. Register for a World Book Day token and redeem it against your chosen book at a participating bookstore. Schools are encouraged to go to www.worldbookday. com to see what can be organised for the children. As World Book Day is a charity, it does not make money from the event, but instead supports Book Aid International and Readathon, two charities helping children less fortunate. By offering chosen books for £1, World Book Day not only raises millions of pounds for charity, it also gets children, who might not ordinarily like reading, think about picking up a book.

On World Book Day, The Biggest Book Show on Earth will showcase what it’s all about. The show at the South Bank in London will begin at 9.30am on March 1 with events for toddlers and children. The aim is to beam the show in to every class and library in the country that has the technology. Authors who will be helping out include Jacqueline Wilson, Julia Donaldson, Andy Stanton and Cressida Cowell. Find out if you’ll be able to watch the show from your school by asking your teacher. A quick note for mums and dads: World Book Night is April 23 so you don’t feel left out! Book tokens can be redeemed from participating bookstores. Visit www. worldbookday.com for full information.

Filling No. 1 - Tangy treat The simplest of pancake toppings is sugar and lemon. Sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar. Either fold in half or roll up into a sausage shape. Sprinkle with a little more sugar and lemon juice. If you’re not a fan of lemon juice, orange works just as well.
- makes 8 pancakes 110g (4oz) plain flour, sifted 1 large egg/2 small eggs 275ml (½ pint) milk Pinch of salt
Everyone loves pancakes. At Primary Times, we don’t need a special day for an excuse to make a batch, but once a year the whole country makes pancakes on the same day, Shrove Tuesday. This year, that day is February 21.
Spread a thin layer of chocolate spread - we love Nutella - all over the pancake. Simply roll up into a sausage. Mmm tasty.
Do you know why we make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. During Lent, people give up things, often food. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday sees people using up rich foods like eggs, sugar and milk before the 40-day fasting season begins. We have an easy pancake recipe for you to make, along with a selection of tasty toppings and fillings that we love!
Method Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and break the egg(s) into it along with half of the milk. Then begin whisking the eggs and milk into the flour, mixing in any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl. When this is done, pour in the rest of the milk and mix it all in until you get a smooth batter. Now, with an adult’s help, grease the pan with a little drizzle of oil. Get the pan really hot, but be careful. Pour in enough batter to just cover the bottom of the pan, tilting the pan to ensure the batter is even. The bottom of the pancake should be cooked and golden brown in just under one minute. When it is, flip the pancake over using a spatula - or ask mum or dad to toss it in the air! Cook the other side until golden brown. Enjoy!
Filling No. 3 - Bananarama Slice up a banana into small discs. Lay them out evenly across the pancake. Sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top of the bananas, then just roll up.
Filling No. 4 - Cool down Scoop out some vanilla ice cream and place in a bowl. Mix in some raisins and other dried fruit. Sprinkle some of the dried fruit on the pancake and fold in half, then half again so that you make a triangle shape. Scoop out your ice cream and fruit mix onto the top of the pancake. You will need to eat this one with a fork and spoon, but it is scrummy.
Filling No. 5 – Pure indulgence Chop up some strawberries into discs and spread out onto the pancake. Get mum or dad to help you grate some chocolate on top of the strawberries. Roll up and enjoy.

Based on the legendary true story of the red dog that united a local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his master. Truck driver Thomas (Luke Ford, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) believes that he has witnessed a crime. March 8-11 sees the return of Crufts to Birmingham’s NEC. For dog lovers everywhere, Crufts is a fantastic weekend of tail wagging fun. Crufts is the largest dog show in the world and is now celebrating its 121st year! Crufts celebrates every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives. Dogs mean different things to different people. To some, a dog is someone to talk to. To others, a dog is someone to play with. To a lot of people, a dog is someone to cuddle. In the last ten years, Crufts has raised more than £135,000 for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, helping to re-home dogs and providing assistance dogs to those in need. In the NEC, Crufts covers more than 25 acres (that’s more than 16 football pitches!) in five halls, the Pavilions and the Best in Show Arena. Check out our competitions page for your chance to win tickets to Crufts 2012! A lot of children ask Santa for a puppy for Christmas. Did you? Did he bring you one? Do you want to know how to
look after your new furry friend? Ask our advice! Send us a picture! I asked Heather from Primary Times Midlands to tell us all about her two dogs … I have two greyhounds called Monty and Rosie. Monty is seven and Rosie is six. We adopted them both from Hall Green Retired Greyhound Trust. Rosie eats hypoallergenic dry dog food with the occasional treat. Monty is a bit fussier: he eats minced beef and Weetabix for breakfast and potato, rice, broccoli, cauliflower and minced beef for dinner, with a few treats too. They sleep cuddled up to each other on their beds, but Rosie also likes to sunbathe in the porch. They have their own little personalities, with their own little habits. Rosie likes taking the bathmat to bed and tries to climb on your lap when she wants a cuddle (she’s a big dog!). She likes walks, squeaky toys, talking (yes, talking), food, lying in awkward places and bossing Monty around. Monty likes sleeping with his eyes open, walks, playing with his toys, fuss and being bossed around by Rosie. They both dislike fireworks and going to the vet and Rosie dislikes going out in the dark. They are forever getting into trouble, but we love them.

s r a t s r e p u s s ’ d n Engla gham g n i m r i B o t n r u t re The world’s best will be in action in Birmingham this summer when the England cricket team returns to the new Edgbaston Stadium in all three forms of the game - Test Match, T20 and One Day International. With England now sitting at the top of the Test Match and t20 World Rankings, Edgbaston is celebrating with amazing promotions for families to see the world’s best players in its Superstar Summer of Cricket. England’s summer at Edgbaston begins with the Investec Test Match against the West Indies during the summer half term week. With the kids off from school, Edgbaston is offering tickets for Day One of the Test Match (Thursday June 7) for just £1 for children under the age of 16. This offer is also valid for England’s floodlit NatWest T20 International against South Africa, which takes place at 6.30pm on Wednesday September 12. Day One of the Test Match between England and West Indies will also be Cure Leukaemia Day, for which Edgbaston raised £75,000 last summer. The charity, which funds lifesaving treatments for leukaemia patients is one of Edgbaston’s nominated charities and this year the venue is hoping that the initiative will raise even more money and awareness for the charity with further red t-shirt giveaways.
Cure Leukaemia Day
In addition to being the home venue for England batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, Edgbaston is also the home venue of Birmingham born rising star Chris Woakes. 22-year-old Woakes is a product of Warwickshire’s youth team and Academy programmes and has already played One Day and T20 cricket for England. In 2012 he’ll be looking to bowl his way into contention for all three teams by taking even more wickets for the Warwickshire Bears.
Player profiles
Here’s a bit more information about three Warwickshire Bears players …

• Started playing aged 11 • Made First-Class debut with Warwickshire Bears in 2006 • One of England’s most talented fast bowlers with 223 First-Class wickets • Called up to England T20 squad in Australia in 2011
