I

had the most wonderful time at Style Birmingham Live last year, so I was glad to be asked to come back this year. Sometimes, with the best will in the world, you take jobs and everyone’s trying really hard but it just doesn’t live up to your expectations. I was thoroughly impressed by SBL though, and I don’t think there’d be a city in the world that wouldn’t be happy with that sort of performance. I watch a lot of fashion shows and the production levels on the catwalk show were incredibly high. From the cars to the receptions and the master-classes, it was a comprehensive, well put-together event and something I’m very happy to put my name to and be a part of. I’m really looking forward to being a part of this year’s event. It was fun in Birmingham. When your face is on 15-foot high posters everywhere, there’s a lot of Beatles-esque stopping and signing and chatting, but it was really nice for me because when you’re on TV or radio, there’s always separation between you and the people you’re making programmes for. So to be able to get out and meet people and have a proper chat and see what’s going on style-wise was really interesting. I always go to London Fashion Week. I love to see new designers coming through but I love the buzz too. There’s a lot of nonsense that comes with it – it wouldn’t be fashion without the nonsense - but the parties and the events and visitors all make it a creative period and I love the energy that’s around the city during that time. My stylist Adrian Sauvage became my business partner. I’m his muse and we’ve created a menswear line together, called A. Sauvage. He used to style me and he still keeps a mindful eye on what I’m wearing. I do think you’ve got to go with your gut on matters of style, but Adrian and I like the same aesthetic and even when other people are telling me not to wear something, he’ll say ‘go for it’ and he’s always right. You’ve got to dress for your mood: dress for how you feel when you get up every morning. I can wear tried-and-tested outfits that I’ve worn a thousand times but if I’m not in the right mood for them one day, it’s not going to happen. Today I slipped on a pair of loafers and it worked fine: maybe espadrilles would have worked better with the outfit but I wanted to wear the loafers and it felt right. It may sound like a small thing, but it’s about being comfortable in what you’re wearing.

Photo: Dylan Don

Films inspire my look. Up until a few years ago, I wasn’t aware of them consciously influencing my style but then, watching movies with Adrian, I realised that he watches them like the film-maker he is, really noticing what the actors are wearing, what the sets and locations are like. That way of watching films is what I now do to an extent, getting lost in the aesthetic. I like a lot of the old Italian films, the Federico Fellini old-school, 50s movies. I rarely go shopping these days, but when I do, it’s mainly for casualwear. I wear labels I know work for me, and I also buy things when I’m abroad, like a beautiful handmade shirt I bought when I was in Morocco this summer. We’re working on expanding and diversifying the A. Sauvage line. I think jeans and t-shirts and some accessories will be next, as it’s been sharp tailoring up until now.

“I’m more Jonathan ross and davId Letterman than I am someone LIke steve Jones or dermot o’Leary”

I love radio. I’d wanted to do another radio show after working with BBC 6 Music, so it was good to do a few months at TalkSport this summer, and we had a lovely time. There’s more radio in my future definitely but how regularly, I don’t know. A weekly show is a big commitment and I don’t have the time right now. My ideal radio show would be great music and a lot of nonsense. I’m working on a plan for my own radio station, an app-based one to work through your phone, so somewhere down the line that will happen: maybe a year or so away. We’re still doing the weekly podcast on iTunes, which is great. I love new technology and the way it’s started to work with radio, it’s the future. I find it quite hard to work with other people’s parameters and guidelines, and the constraints of their protocol sometimes, so it’s often easier to do your own thing. Technology is moving so rapidly now that conventional platforms that are available to us are no longer anywhere near as important as they’ve traditionally been. I like Twitter and it’s a wonderful tool for communication. But I also find it a bit difficult, as I’m not interested in the banal in life. I don’t want to read that someone’s just had a cup of tea or been to the shop. I think Twitter works well if you’re really immersed in it and you’re the funniest guy on the planet with a laconic take on your life. Otherwise, who’s interested? I want to be present in my life: I don’t understand these people who are on their phones while they’re having a face-to-face

issue 23

conversation with you, or Tweeting while watching TV. Either you’re here or you’re not here! Presenting the American version of The X Factor is an amazing gig for Steve Jones, he’s going to do a fantastic job and America’s going to fall in love with him. But for me, I want a slightly different career path. I’m more Jonathan Ross and David Letterman than I am someone like Steve or Dermot O’Leary, brilliant though they are: I want a voice, not to present a big show. Not to say that you can’t cross over and do both but if you want to set your stall out and have an opinion and entertain people in your own style, then maybe a late-night chat show is the best thing and I hope that’s where I’m going eventually. It’s something I’d love to do. I’m trying my hand at acting. I’ve just won a part in a pilot for a new show. I went up for it just to see if I could do it. My dad is actor Larry Lamb, of course, so I’ve been around acting all my life. I’ve wanted to have a go for a while, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be: in fact, completely the opposite. It’s a drama and a departure for me but thanks to my background, I think I’ve got a reasonable grounding in acting. Everyone kept asking me when I was going to try an acting role, so maybe it was inevitable at some point. Let’s wait and see how it turns out.

As a blogger I try to be constantly on the fashion pulse. I regularly delve deep into the blogging world unearthing bits of knowledge and stylish insight into the world of fashion from industry professionals, lovers of style and trends, and those who like to publish their daily snaps of beautiful attire.

for fashion. It was really interesting to see how they portray the trends, and how this develops into high street store collections, for you and me to buy.

Obviously, Style Birmingham Live covers more than just the Town Hall fashion show, and we’ve been setting wheels in motion for loads of stylish events taking place across the centre of Birmingham. There’s the unique, never-seen-before Bullring catwalk show, entitled ‘The Show: Redefinition’, uniting fashion and technology! Intriguing I know, but don’t fret: more information will be released shortly (keep an eye on www.stylebirmingham.com). Then there’s the live stage show with The Clothes Show’s Caryn Franklin and a beauty zone at The Pavilions. They’ll also be very fashionable events at Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and many more destinations across the city. It really is a fashionista’s dream.

As you read this in early September, I’ll be busy optioning the fashion: that is, choosing which looks you’ll see on the SBL catwalks. The A/W ‘11 collections have finally hit the stores and our stylist has flown in from Germany to lead us on this fashion-finding mission. After that, well, I’ll be working alongside/ swooning over the gorgeous George Lamb on the show itself…

One of my first tasks was to talk to shops and boutiques about the big Town Hall catwalk show, as there’s so much for them to think about and prepare for. This was a military operation! First I hit the phones to introduce myself (no need to introduce SBL: everyone knows about it). After appointment-making with store managers and email-writing to head offices, it was then time to head out into the city centre to meet the lovely store managers in person. This exciting preparation has taken up most of my time in the last few weeks, as well as a little trend research, blog post writing, presscall attending and email responding.

If you want to keep up with my Style Birmingham Live progress, as well as sneak previews of the trends we’ll be showcasing and style tips, then you can follow my blog posts at www.stylebirmingham. com, as well as at www.jonesloves.com or for updates as they happen why not follow the progress on Twitter? Style Birmingham Live is what is currently getting all of my attention when it comes to fashion trends and style. This summer I was recruited onto the production team that heads up this citywide event. And after hearing about this year’s changes – the inclusion of celebrity stylist Bradley Taylor, the involvement of a fantastic production team, an experienced catwalk stylist and castings for models from internationally acclaimed agencies, I really couldn’t wait to get started. For months now I’ve been scouring retailer collections, unearthing secret style tips and adding to my knowledge of A/W ‘11 fashion trends, in order to help the team make this event the best year yet. It’s part of my role to concentrate mainly on the Town Hall fashion show, ensuring all of the best retailers are involved, liaising with both the head offices and the store managers on a weekly basis, to enable them to showcase their gorgeous autumn/winter collections in the best possible light. We are involving all retailers throughout the city, whether they are beauty focused, sport focused and so on... and of course, we’re talking to restaurants and bars too, to hold in-store activity during SBL. What kind of events do they have coming up for you? This could be discounts, or maybe a glass of bubbly for customers, styling sessions or master classes in how to create the perfect look. This is a great way to enhance

issue 23

the weekend, and it will enable you to fill your day with great bargains and with bubbly on offer, you can be refuelled and refreshed for lots more shopping!

Our first press call for the event was with Caryn Franklin at The Pavilions, who looked rather stylish in a short statement black dress worn over trousers (a future trend) draped over an elegant velvet chair, whilst the cameras flashed away (you can read an interview with her on page 25). We’ve been working with lovely George Lamb on publicity for his role as host, too, which has not exactly been a chore! The team and I even attended the Pure exhibition in London: it’s a huge trade show where you get to see fashion shows from trend forecasting agency, WGSN, and learn about what’s in the future

Though the last couple of months have been manic, the team and I have laboured hard to ensure that you all get to see the best show yet. Plus there’s more good news – your tickets can be used across the whole three days, not just on a specific chosen day – meaning that you get to enjoy all the offers, refreshments, discounts and styling sessions, and a whole lot of shopping ALL weekend.

Satisfying your every taste.

FASHION GURU CARYN FRANKLYN WILL HOST MASTERCL ASSES! Legendary fashion broadcaster and writer Caryn Franklin will be presenting her live stage show, How To Look Good at Pavilions, for FREE, three times each day of Style Birmingham Live. Bringing together fashion trends, styling advice and expert tips on how to flatter your shape and pick clothes confidently to suit your body, the How To Look Good stage show demonstrates Caryn’s long held belief that all women, regardless of age, shape and size can make fashion work for them. Drawing on the latest autumn/winter trends from Pavilions retailers ranging from Hobbs, M&S, Monsoon and Evans to independents Wysteria Lane, Silk Step and Aspecto, How To Look Good is an entertaining mix of catwalk, masterclass and makeovers covering fashion, hair and make-up. Caryn will be joined on stage by celebrity make-up artist Ariane Poole (This Morning, GMTV) and Midlands’ hairdressers and global L’Oreal ambassadors, Royston Blythe and Nick Malenko whose celebrity clientele has included Hollywood A-listers, music star Katy Perry and model Lily Cole. In addition to the stage show on the Pavilions High Street Level, a special beauty zone in the Pavilions Arena will provide the opportunity for hair and beauty consultations from Ariane Poole, Royston Blythe and Pavilions beauty retailers who include L’Occitane, Destination Skin and Pure Halal Beauty. Caryn told us: “ It’s been 25 years since I first worked on The Clothes Show made by BBC Pebble Mill and since then fashion has become a national obsession. But with all the ‘get the look’ and ‘expert juries’ deciding who should wear what, I know women can feel under pressure to conform to unachievable ideals. I don’t give out ‘rules’ just ‘tools’ to empower women to feel confident about making clothing choices for their own unique shapes. I want women to have fun and celebrate who they are.”

MaSCuLIne taILOrInG The idea of masculine tailoring is a key trend for A/W ’11: think pleated straight leg trousers and jackets, reworked to create staples with a masculine edge. Trousers in silk crepe teamed with feminine black lace tops mix with jackets with military detailing and structure with long sleeve silk blouses, providing the perfect balance between menswear and womenswear.

lace-up detailing, leather bondage harnesses, black lace appliqué and gothic styling, in signature black. The entire collection references the risqué darker side, whilst maintaining a clean silhouette and Film Noir air. Models were sent down the catwalks adorned with black peplum leather and wool gloves, brothel creepers, leather harnesses and caps, as well as black sequined neck pieces and collars to complete the gothic styles.

tHe JuMpSuIt In fashion now for a second season, the jumpsuit has a new twist for eveningwear this winter. Look for subtle frills and embellishment in the way of black sequins for an elegant and contemporary feel. Armani’s versions are both feminine and androgynous with seductive nuances; tying in with the black, spy and gothic themes that are set to dominate autumn.

tHe LeatHer JaCKet The style classic is back with a vengeance. If you only buy one statement item this season, make it a leather jacket. Choose butter-soft leather, in timeless black, and choose detailing that makes it stand out from the rest: fresh frills, collarless cuts and a shorter hemline. This season’s Armani jacket has been reinvented with a signature touch of tailoring, using the softest and finest of leathers to reinvent an iconic wardrobe staple.

One of the key bags from the Emporio Armani collection, the Spy Bag, £729, is practical and functional without sacrificing high-fashion values. It has a secret compartment, essential for the ‘modern spy’, whether she’s packing surveillance kit or just her make-up case.

M Y ST Y LE Fa s h i o n g u r u C a ry n F r a n k l i n o n fa s h i o n f o r a l l The A/W ‘11 trends are fabulous. I love all the 40s influences: the classics, the belts at the waist, wider shapes at the bottom of the body, flares. They always return for one good reason: they flatter so many body types. I also love all the print that I’m seeing. Women are very unaccepting of their physical flaws, but they are what make us individual and interesting. I was 34 when my grey streak started to grow through, and I was told to get rid of it because it made me look too old. I refused, and I’m extremely glad that I did because it’s what makes me, me.

MICRO-TREND:

Annie Hall

All things 70s are back in play for autumn, especially the kind of boho chic seen on Diane Keaton in Annie Hall: tweed coats, androgynous tailoring, ties, felt hats, Fair Isle tanks and flares in an autumn palette of brown, gold, orange and cream. Wrap dress £65, blouse £22, Farah jeans £24, jumper £35, all Monsoon in Bullring.

NEW IN Loving the prints trend? Aztec, batik, floral... clashing prints in strong colours is set to be a crossover trend from couture this autumn/winter. Team one piece with black for an edgy vibe: trousers, £29.99, River Island.

MARY ’S SHOES

Fashion and retail expert Mary Portas has teamed up with Clarks to create colourful collection of every-day shoes and night-out beauties. Mary says she wanted chic, on-trend shoes and boots designed with a modern woman’s busy lifestyle in mind. “It has long been a fantasy of mine to collaborate with Clarks” she said. “We used the Clarks Softwear technology which means you can wear a high heel that looks painful to wear, but - shhhh! - it’s secretly easy to walk in all day long.” There are 25 pieces in the limited edition range, in store now in Bullring. Teal heels £79.99, animal print boots £110 and gold driving shoes £69.99.

I’ll be at Style Birmingham Live with my How to Look Good show. It embraces all women. I believe it is really important for us to see a range of beauty. We’ll have a range of models from Valerie who’s 67, to 42-year-old Maxine, and Nina who is a curvaceous size 18. If women can see healthy looking women modelling clothes that they could see themselves wearing, it becomes all about inspiration. It’s about seeing your beauty mirrored back to you. A big part of our How to Look Good show is about empowering women. I will be helping women to know how to pick clothes to suit their shapes, and revealing tips that will help them to shop more efficiently. Most women don’t shop like a stylist; they shop in a way that’s much more personal, so I will be giving them the tools that we stylists use. • Caryn’s How to Look Good show will form part of Style Birmingham Live between September 23-25. The show will take place three times a day and will be free of charge.

As if fashion-a-thon Style Birmingham Live isn’t enough this autumn, The Mailbox is kicking off the new season with a glorious three-month celebration of new brands, boutiques, designers, jewellery-makers, homewares, even beauty experts and fashion stylists, each bursting to share with you their creations, so you go home with something new, exciting, maybe even unique. It all starts over the weekend of Style Birmingham Live: The Mailbox will be launching Style Renaissance, stretching through party season and beyond, past Christmas and right up to New Year. What is it? Well, Style Renaissance will give innovative new names on the fashion, beauty and homewares scene the chance to show you their work for you to lust over, love, buy and try! Expect fashion shows, previews and sneak peeks, models walking the mall, beauty demonstrations and makeovers, amazing special offers and lots of fun events inside the stores of The Mailbox. We’ve had an exclusive first look at Style Renaissance, and here’s a few of our favourite things: The Style Clinic: Step in to enjoy the guidance of a style advisor who can perfect your look or help you try something new, plus you’ll have the chance to check out the collections from new fashion, jewellery and accessory labels. There’ll be a personal shopper on hand for insider tips and you can even bag a colour analysis to find out which shades suit you best. And there are plenty of shopping opps too: take home something new and fabulous from a designer you’ve not tried before, or invest in some exquisite handcrafted jewellery.

issue 23

Innovative Beauty: Beauty fans beware: you won’t want to leave this cool and chic pampering treat without a bagful of new cosmetics from The Mailbox’s gorgeous beauty emporia. This is where you can hear all about the latest breakthroughs in skincare, make-up and grooming, and maybe try a whole new look, just in time for party season. Home Style: Come get some expert tips from an interior designer, who can talk you through the new season trends and offer inspiration, whether it’s on a luxe look at home, bespoke furniture, or decorating for Christmas. There will be plenty of glamorous homewares to buy, too. Jewellery Box: Opulent, grand, and packed with beautiful jewellery, here’s where you get to write your Christmas wish-list. Get help with accessorising, advice on jewellery and gems, or just splash out on a statement piece that you’ll love forever. Style Centre: A treasure chest for style-lovers, this is where you’ll find a marketplace of designers, vintage and couture fashion, millinery, costume jewellery and lavish gifts, all new, all fresh, all original. Think London Fashion Week meets the best souk in the world: we have a feeling you’ll want more than one visit... The Gentry: Gentleman, we haven’t forgotten you. Sometimes, a little style advice makes all the difference and here you’ll be able to speak to a personal shopper or style consultant to find out what really works for you. Plus, enjoy a spot of grooming and take the chance to invest in a few new pieces for your winter wardrobe. With Harvey Nichols enjoying its tenth birthday in October with squillions of special events, we’ve got an amazing autumn ahead. Style Renaissance starts at The Mailbox during Style Birmingham Live, from Friday September 23: we’ll see you there!

MUST-HAVE

Prediction: Clinique’s Fall collection, The New Black, will be autumn’s most sensational success. Inspired by legendary Clinique lip colour Black Honey, the collection oozes classic berry shades and the kind of ultra-wearable neutrals that you’ll want to keep forever. Heroes? Q: I want relaxed waves without looking windswept: can you advise?

FASHION FACE MAC asked its top make-up artists to roadtest the new Matchmaster Foundation SPF 15 at New York and Paris Fashion Week... with amazing results. Giving medium coverage and blending away in seconds, the foundation uses clever new pigment technology to make your skin look flawless: it’s especially good if you have blemishes, scars or different shades in your skin. Best of all, there are 14 colours so you’re bound to find one that suits: £24.50 on counter from September.

Q: I wash my hair every day and find my salon colour starts to fade quite quickly. How can I prolong its life? A: Sometimes, conditioner just won’t do it. A weekly coloursensitive hair masque is the best way to keep colour vibrant. The new Joico Color Endure Treatment Masque, £12.95, preserved coloured hair by up to 80 per cent in trials, giving a rich shade for longer: salons: 0845 071 2326, www.joicoeurope. com

A: Bedhead waves don’t have to mean the surfer-girl look: like Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley you can have textured waves that look as groomed as they do gorgeous. Two pumps of Fudge Salt Spray, £10.95, on damp hair are all you need for controlled waves: salons: 01282 683100, www. fudge.com

Q: Every curl product I buy leaves my fine hair crispy: please help! A: Curls are the trickiest type of hair to manage. Too much product = limp curls, too little = frizz. Trevor Sorbie’s awardwinning Beautiful Curls range has a fab new product: The Original Curl Cream, £5.10 at Boots. It’s the best we’ve ever tried for soft, naturallooking, frizz-free curls.

POLKA

NOT

PURPLE CRAZE Abbie Milburn, 17

Abi Copson, 17

Aubergine, violet, mulberry: regal purple reigned on the catwalk for Gucci’s fall collection. This purple jacket and tights combo works well, because the colour is pared down with vintage accessories such as the handbag and clock necklace.

From appliqué to cutouts, from headgear to hosiery, designers such as Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs have indulged in a polka dot playground for their autumn/winter collections. Finished with on-trend red lips, this sheer, tie-front shirt is a great example of how to get the look spoton for work or play.

in stark CONTRAST Alexandra Davenport, 19

Toughen up Suzie Smart, 31

Chanel’s vibe for the final fashion season of the year was based around adopting a boy/ girl exterior. Suzie’s mix of boots, jeans and a loose-fitting sweater, with a predominantly blue hue, fits the bill perfectly for this trend.

SHAPE SHIFTER

Minimalistic black and white stormed the Calvin Klein runway for autumn/winter. Alexandra’s androgynous rock-chick vibe is completed by a full-on fringe, one of the hair trends of the season.

Harriet Clements, 17

Patterned tights are a great way to add graphics to your plain winter knits this season. These zigzag tights give a tough edge to Harriet’s retro cardigan and also add extra texture to the outfit.

RULES

MONOCHROME MOMENT Sylvia Stanton, 68

Sylvia’s dress is a great take on the dappled trend that was present in Burberry Prorsum’s fall season show – this look would easily carry her through from day to night with elegant ease.

Sinéad Best, 18

Belts - both big and small were tied over dresses, jackets, jumpers... just about anything you could think of at the autumn/ winter shows. Sinéad’s highwaisted belt lengthens the legs and gives a flirty kick to her dress.

Maryam Noorzadeh, 35

Alice Temperley’s autumn/ winter collection was scattered with embellished dresses – Maryam makes her detailed dress work for daytime by teaming it with beaded flipflops and statement sunglasses.

Ayesha Nwandu, 24

TIME TO SHINE Minty Maloy, 19

Minty’s neapolitan knit sparkles, shimmers and shines – a key trend for this winter that will liven up any outfit against the chills to come.

Optical illusions were everywhere on the Proenza Schouler catwalk for this season – Ayesha shows us the best way to water this trend down for work, by choosing a key piece to stand out against more subtle clothing.

The rustic trend is set to be huge for autumn/winter, seen on the catwalks at Dolce & Gabbana and Marc Jacobs. Think padded gilets, sheepskin trim, Aran sweaters, cords, tapered chinos, thick woollen socks and mountaineering boots. It’s a look that’s easy to wear – the key is to layer – and workable at any age, so invest now and you’ll be good to go for the whole winter. One piece that nails the trend? The multi-pocket gilet, fashionforward and functional at the same time: North Coast gilet £59, cardigan £79, shirt £35 and boots £65, plus fur-lined Aran cardigan £69, all Marks & Spencer.

IN NEUTRAL Nature’s inspired the colour palette at River Island for autumn, so expect lots of shades of cool tan, deep brown, leaf green and palest water-blue. Hero pieces include shearling jackets, jersey weekend blazers and softwashed denim shirts.

MADE IN BRITAIN The tailoring at Thomas Pink has always been spectacular but the new season collection is something really special. Taking inspiration from country pursuits, the line features traditional British tweeds, twills, tartans and tattersall checks, in rich browns, greens, and heathers reminiscent of pheasant-filled British moors. This is old-school dressing brought bang up-to-date. Find Thomas Pink in The Mailbox. Shirts from £89, jackets from £495.

I N THE N AVY In 1942, the Italian Government commissioned Ilvo Fontana to design a watch for the pilots of the Navy. Ilvo made it big enough to be read instantly in any weather and light conditions, but there was a change of plan and the order for the watches was cancelled, leaving the design, which Ilvo named U-BOAT, to remain dormant for decades. Re-discovered in 1999 by Italo Fontana, Ilvo’s grandson, the original designs were finally put into production: now these uber-cool limited edition, numbered timepieces are available in Selfridges, from £2,950.

VELVET LOUNGE A perennial style favourite, the velvet jacket is THE best investment buy if you have one eye on party season. As cool with a tee and jeans as paired with dress shirt and patent evening shoes, a classic-cut velvet jacket is timeless style. This season, colour plays a role too, but look for muted shades of charcoal, midnight blue and darkest teal, like this double-breasted blazer by Paul Smith, £485 at House of Fraser.

If you can’t make your mind up on fragrance or like to swap every day according to mood, invest in the clever new Vivabox from The Perfume Shop. For £39.99, you get a selection of sample size scents from a range of designer brands, including Armani, Hugo Boss, Diesel and Paco Rabanne. There’s also a voucher inside that you can take back into store to exchange for the full-size of whichever cologne becomes your favourite.

LOOK ALIVE

Dark circles are hard to shift completely, but a light-textured eye gel will minimise the effect and smooth out puffiness, too. We rate Elemis Absolute Eye Serum, £26.60, a unisex product that uses natural ingredients such as rosewood and chamomile to soothe the skin around the eye. Try it after too much screen or driving time: it’s an instant refresh.

Transparent, oil- and fragrance-free and guaranteed not to streak, this is a beaut of a fake tan: believable colour and no telltale scent.

. 5ml Crème de Cassis . 25ml Lemon juice . 5ml Gomme . Teaspoon of black cherry conserve Method: Add all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker (or a jam jar, if you don’t have one). Shake the ingredients together for about 10 seconds and then fine strain over cubed ice into a short ‘rocks’ glass. Finally, add a garnish to make it stylish: a fresh sprig of mint and a cherry does the trick.

TAKE ME OUT No longer the preserve of the rich, famous and idle, afternoon tea has taken over from brunch as the most stylish way to break bread with friends and family. Try the new afternoon tea menu at Harvey Nichols, where a £30 for two investment will bag you delicate finger sandwiches, a selection of pretty cakes, homemade mini scones with Cornish clotted cream, HN strawberry jam or HN lemon curd, and a choice of HN teas. Upgrade to the Champagne Afternoon Tea, priced at £46 for two for a glass of bubbly, too. The tea is served daily from 2pm-5.30pm. For reservations: 0121 616 6024.

Summer might be over but sky-blue remains a key shade for autumn dining. Le Creuset’s nailed the trend with an exquisite shade of pastel blue in the new Coastal Blue collection of enamelled cast iron cookware including round, oval and shallow casseroles, a 20cm omelette pan, 26cm frying pan and rectangular grill plus a selection of stylish stoneware oven-totableware. Elegant and a lifelong investment too: that’s our kind of shopping. From around £20: visit www.lecreuset. co.uk for stockists.

LOVE CHOCOLATE With National Chocolate Week coming up in October, we’re obsessed with all things sweet and chocolatey right now. That’s why we’re reading the decadent new book by the UK’s premier chocolatier William Curley Couture Chocolate (Jacqui Small, £30). and pine nuts providing a refreshing, tasty meal for, what was a very warm, summer evening.

Deliberating over the desserts, we decided on the sorbet selection (£4.50), consisting of apple, mango and blood orange, and the ultimate brownie (£4.95), recommended for its gooiness by waitress We were made to feel extremely welcome by the Lauren. The sorbet was the perfect palate cleanser friendly, attentive staff, being given a choice of the to round off the meal, with the tangy blood best tables. We ordered two glasses of wine while orange sailing through as my favourite. Lauren we perused the menu, was indeed correct in opting for the Ramata recommending the Pinot Grigio delle brownie … chocolate GREAT FOOD AND Venezio 2009 cantina goo as you’ve never A LAIDBACK VIBE zellina (£4.95) and the seen before with the Sauvignon Blanc di scrumptious raspberry STRAIGHT OUT OF Friuli 2009 cantina and amaretto flavours TUSCANY zellina (£5.10). adding to the richness. Jamie’s Italian is not your typical Italian restaurant just offering pizza and pasta. Although the character of the restaurant is definitely one of your classic Italian – with a friendly maître d’, knowledgeable staff and an atmosphere of a real love for food – the menu offers fish, burgers, steak and sausages as well as pasta and salad. We chose to share the Italian bread selection (£3.75) and the crispy courgette flower (£5.95) to start from the nibbles and antipasti menu. The courgette flower was deliciously filled with four cheeses, lemon and mint in an olive and tomato sauce. The beautifully smooth cheese filling was surrounded by a crispy batter providing the perfect taste bud teaser. The freshly baked focaccia dribbled with Jamie’s signature extra virgin olive oil and garlic was certainly a great nibble.

Jamie’s Italian works the rustic Mediterranean look well – think faded wooden floor, aged metal tables and chairs and a palette of silver and yellow – making it the perfect spot for a relaxed evening, full of great food and a laidback vibe straight out of Tuscany. Molto bene!

Wa l k e r pa i d t h e m a v i s i t From the moment we walked through the door we were greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of grilled steak. We ordered wine whilst deliberating the surprisingly varied menu; with a selection of meat, poultry, fish, burgers, pasta and salad, you don’t need to have a love for steak to dine at Miller & Carter. We opted for the Merlot CYT Sendoro from Chile (£6.15 large) and the Merlot Rosé, Argento from Argentina (£5.65 large). To start, we went for the Creole king prawns (£5.95), which are butterfly king prawns coated in a spicy Creole crumb, served with a chili marmalade dip, and the Baked lobster (£6.25), the classic lobster thermidor served in clamshells. The spicy crumb on the king prawns was extremely warming but was perhaps not the best choice for the time of year as it was 25 degrees outside. Whilst the lobster could have done with a touch more seasoning, the presentation was beautiful. The 14oz Porterhouse (£19.95) and the 8oz Fillet (£20.95) were the steaks we chose. All steaks come with a choice of a jacket potato or fries, parsley butter, a slice of onion loaf, iceberg lettuce wedge, and a choice of steak sauces. Although the mains are not cheap, you certainly get a lot of extras for your money. Both the fillet and the porterhouse had oodles of flavour and were cooked perfectly to our tastes. This restaurant is welcoming, warm and comfortable. If what you want is a hearty steak with generous portions, you need go no further than Miller & Carter. Round off your meal by taking your drink out on to the terrace overlooking the canal. With, in my opinion, one of the best views in Birmingham, the terrace area is definitely a feature that Miller & Carter can boast about. Miller & Carter

For our main dishes we went for the Anglesey sea bass (£15.95) and the prosciutto, pear and pecorino salad (£10.95). The whole-roasted sea bass was succulent and flaked delicately to reveal crunchy sweet and sour vegetables. Light, yet filling. The salad was piled high with prosciutto ham, pear
