Your signature motif – embellished knitwear, colour, lips, polka dots – has been copied all over the high street. Did you expect this? I totally didn’t. There are a lot of replicas everywhere! It’s just something you can’t control. It can be something good and be quite flattering, but it can also be annoying. The high street doesn’t even do it as well as us because ours are hand-embroidered and there’s a lot of craft going into the design. Every time I see what other people have done, the quality is never as good. There is something quite incredible in what we offer. You see the difference in the hand embroidery because you can shade it better, you can change the colours more. If you do machine embroidery it’s very blocky, it becomes very clean and sterile, but ours has more character and changing colours. Do you see your fashion to be suitable for all shapes, sizes and ages? I think that’s really important. I think the jersey I use and the shapes allow me to do that. I want to cater for all sizes, for the extra small, the medium, the large and the extra large. I don’t think it’s a size issue: it’s about feeling good, the woman’s confidence. You should be able to wear something fashionable regardless of what size you are, whether you’re large or small, it shouldn’t matter. I want to be able to cater for everyone: I don’t want just a skinny size 8 girl, I have no interest in that. Lydia Hearst is your muse but do you design with a particular type of person in mind? Every time I develop something I ask myself ‘who can I see wearing that? Can I see some friends in that, maybe a celebrity?’ I also ask the girls in the office if they would wear it – feedback is vital at that early stage. I don’t necessarily think of a particular girl or woman at the design stage, but I am starting to think of one person as an all over inspiration, like a strong character, for the brand. What influenced you for the summer collection? I was flying to Ethiopia, and on my way in the plane, I looked down and I saw a big sandpit. It was my first time to the Sahara. I got really excited! About an hour later, I looked out of the window and still saw the desert. Another hour later, still desert. It was basically three hours of flying over desert. I went back to work on the collection and watched the 1980s film White Mischief with Greta Scacchi. It’s an amazing film, set in the ‘40s and based around aristocrats and ex-pats in Kenya and it’s kind of debauched, there’s a murder and there’s a lot of drugs and it’s based on a real life story. The whole feel of the film inspired me for my new collection. So, the colours and the zebra and the cheetah sequin jumpers, and the giraffe jumpers, and the colours are based on that film.
nown for his sophisticated but edgy clothes, London-based designer Markus Lupfer has dressed everyone from Anna Friel to Lily Allen. His signature pieces – quirky embellished knitwear and achingly cool slogan tees – have now been joined by a sleek menswear collection and some truly beautiful – and collectible – womenswear dresses in metallics, classic stripes and soft wool. Here, he discusses his influences, inspiration and the highs and lows of surviving and thriving in the fashion world.
What’s the future of the Lupfer label? I think it’s very important to keep things in a tight spectrum and do what you’re known for. I always say that it’s a big professional cupboard with drawers and in each drawer there’s a label so there’s the Adidas, the Diesel, the Chanel and there’s the Markus Lupfer drawer. So, if you know what’s in the Markus Lupfer drawer, that’s your main, core business. To add to the drawer is quite a challenge
ON THE LUPFER LINE There’s a lot of wit in your collections, is that a direct reflection of your personality? It’s nice not to be too serious and to have fun. There is too much seriousness in daily life, so having a bit of light heartedness in the collection is always a big part of what I do. I think it’s important to have a bit of fun with fashion.

because you need to educate everyone with the new elements of your collection. I can see us creating an accessories line, but even more likely is that I will move into homeware. We’re hoping to branch out into kidswear too; that’s the next step for the brand. We’ve started expanding with the menswear and we need to let that grow for a few seasons and then most likely go into kids wear.

What ambitions do you have left? I want to grow the business, and I feel like I want to be more accessible. We need to be high end but accessible. That’s my dream really: to make it really easy for people to buy into the Markus Lupfer brand.
ON THE FASHION WORLD You emerged in 1997: what were your first few years in the fashion industry like? It’s very hard but never for one minute did I think of giving up, not even in the last ten years. It’s tough because you always have to come up with a new product, there is a constant time pressure. This business is very broad, with production, PR, sales and working with the shops, it’s all very time consuming. It’s really hard to build any fashion business from small to successful, but I love it and I hope that I will still love it in ten years. You’ve said that you wanted to be a designer from a young age. Where did that focus come from? I don’t really know, it was just something I wanted to do. Maybe it’s to do with some

neighbours that I was hanging out with at a young age, and they loved fashion, and suddenly you get into it and you go shopping. I come from this little rural village in the south of Germany and we planned shopping trips to Milan and it quickly became something I wanted to do. Do you live and breathe fashion 24/7? When I work I’m quite strict, as much as I can be! I do have my moments where I play and don’t really achieve what I should have. You need the time to develop a new collection and play a little bit, and because I’m quite involved in the actual business - the accounts, the development, every aspect really - my time is quite scarce, there’s not a lot of time for me to just kick back and be me. So I have to be strict in order to achieve what I need to achieve, with a little bit of time to play! If you hadn’t made it in fashion, was there a Plan B? I never thought about what I would do if it didn’t work out. This is what I’ve always wanted to do and I knew I would stick with it. What else interests me? I love architecture and graphics, and the stars and the universe. In my autumn/winter collection there are elements of the stars. It’s something I love, and I can read and watch films forever about our universe, like the programmes Professor Brian Cox makes! John Galliano’s fall from grace at Dior (he was sacked for making anti-Semitic remarks on camera) has been blamed in part on the pressure of the fashion world. What’s your take on it? It’s really difficult to comment, I don’t know. I only can say that there is a lot of pressure in this industry and the fashion world
“I don’t thInk It’s a sIze Issue: It’s about feelIng good, the woman’s confIdence” has grown so much in the last 15-20 years. The seasons and the constant changes, newness and pressure from press and sales are all so strong. Every season you have to come up with new ideas and it’s really hard. There’s no excuse whatsoever (for Galliano’s behaviour), however, it’s a tough industry. It’s totally unacceptable to say that, but I was not there so I don’t know exactly what was said. Your autumn/winter ’11 show at London Fashion Week in February caused a stir... Yes, we had models sat on a bus, riding through a Nordic mountain landscape! The opposite of my summer line, the autumn collection was inspired by mountainous landscapes – I looked at Yellowstone National Park, I looked at Nordic areas and mountains. I felt I should do something more cheerful for Fashion Week, something light-hearted. Sometimes it just feels really stressful: all the journalists just go from one catwalk show to the next, it’s all very serious, and I just want to break that. I felt like changing it so it’s more like a presentation: people can come at their own time, stay as long as they want, see the garments closer up and it’s more relaxed. I like that better at the moment, as it feels more natural and a bit less forced. Does travel often inspire your work? It does, I like to travel whenever I can. I love Bali, it’s a favourite destination of mine. I went there a few years ago, and it’s such a lovely place. It’s really chilled and friendly. It’s a country that makes you feel relaxed and calm. *Markus Lupfer is available at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.

SAVE THE SEAS
June 8 celebrated World Oceans Day, and to mark the occasion Crème de la Mer launched a gorgeous special edition 100 ml World Oceans Day Crème in a commemorative ocean-inspired jar, £230. With a large donation to Oceana, the ocean advocacy organisation, Crème de la Mer is helping to protect our seas... now you can too, and bag some serious skincare into the bargain. Available in Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and House of Fraser.
WILD DIOR
We have big love for the new Christian Dior Mitzah Palette £60, as worn by Rachel McAdams at Cannes in May. Full of sophisticated brown and camel tones in a fashion-forward leopard print, it’s a collector’s item. To celebrate, we asked top Dior make-up artist Jamie Coombes for his best summer beauty advice: “Always use a good SPF: it may take longer for you to get a tan but that tan will last so much longer. Dior’s Capture Totale UV Protect SPF 35, £38, is perfect. Use your foundation sparingly: you don’t want to suffocate your skin in the summer: Dior’s Nude Fluide, £29.50, is good for a paler complexion. And look after your lips: it’s all about oranges, reds and pinks this summer. Dior’s Addict Lipstick 624 Feline, £22, is lovely.” Find Dior at Selfridges.
PERFECT SKIN
Naomi Campbell puts her flawless skin down to cutting-edge skincare and plenty of sleep. We can’t guarantee you the kip, but we can help with the creams! Our latest discovery is High Tech Cosmetics, an innovative range of anti-ageing goodies, from fast-acting serums to lifting eye shadows. These quick fix products are affordable too: try the Instant Deep Wrinkle Reducer £38.50, with silicone to smooth out lines, or the Instant Volume Lip Gloss, in ten different colours at £12.50. Find the range at Harvey Nichols.

NEW IN Bobbi Brown’s summer lip colour collection – High Shimmer Lip Gloss, £16 – is about as perfect as it gets. A subtle wash of shimmer, three sexy, neutral shades of pinks and minks and a nostickiness formula. What’s not to love?

top tea facts
2. The earliest mention of tea is during the reign of Chinese Emperor Shen Nung in 2737 BC 3. Tea was first brought to the UK in 1662 by Portuguese Princess, Catherine of Braganza after a visit to China 4. Almost 200 years later in 1831, the recipe of Earl Grey tea was given to Lord Grey as a present of appreciation from a Chinese man 5. Twinings reproduced the recipe for this ‘new’ tea in their London store 6. In the 1840s, the 7th Duchess of Bedford decided there was the need for a meal between lunch and dinner. She invented the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ 7. Chinese people see the act of taking tea as spiritual and relaxing 8.
