CELEBRATE

WINTER

Just a few short weeks into the new year and already we’re busy, busy, busy. With Fashion Weeks all around the world swinging into action, the new season collections streaming into stores, and Valentine’s Day looming into view, it’s a great time to hit the shops with a wish-list as long as your winter coat. Luckily, you needn’t go unprepared: in this issue, we’ve got a comprehensive sneak peek at the spring/summer fashion, from catwalk to high street. We’re loving the transitional trends too, so important at this time of year: make a few savvy investments now and you’ll still be rocking the key trends come July. Turn to page 34 for our pick of the pieces that will ease you through from one season to the next, without breaking the bank. Talking of Fashion Week, with LFW fast approaching, we interviewed Jeff Banks, a legend of British design and regarded by many as the ‘inventor’ of high street fashion. From 60s boutiques to establishing Warehouse in 1976 as the first affordable, British-made high street fashion store, Jeff truly pioneered the kind of accessible fashion we all know and love today. He also has some very controversial things to say about the state of British fashion these days, and more than many fashion commentators, critics and bloggers, he should know: turn to page 7 for our exclusive interview. We also asked actress-turned-designer Sadie Frost for her opinions on Fashion Week: you can read all that and more on page 19. Thinking about treating someone special to something fabulous for Valentine’s this year? Our complete guide to gorgeous gifts starts on page 21, and head to the Social section for oodles of ideas for bars, restaurants and nights out. This romantic day deserves to be marked in style, so book now to avoid disappointing your loved one (and getting yourself into lots of unnecessary trouble into the bargain). Whether you think it’s a day for lovers or a commercialised nightmare, it’s still an excuse to celebrate, and who couldn’t do with one of those in deepest midwinter? Happy Valentine’s Day! eff Banks CBE has been credited with creating the British high street fashion scene as we know it, as well as pioneering fashion on TV with The Clothes Show and establishing Graduate Fashion Week. With a style empire that extends across the globe and a pocketful of awards and honours, Jeff is a true colossus of UK fashion, and here shares his opinions on the industry’s colourful past, imperfect present and possible future

started Warehouse in 1976 most retailers bought their products from wholesalers or designers. Very few wholesalers had their own shops. Warehouse was a new concept as we had our own design room, our own production our own dedicated factories and we sold our own creations through our own shops. We bought nothing from wholesalers, we created everything, clothes, shoes, hats, jewellery: this was the model of the future. Many retailers followed suit much later. Next, Jigsaw, Oasis, Topshop all followed on and in America too Esprit, The Limited and Banana Republic but I think we started it here. Now many designers like Armani, Ralph Lauren and D&G have their own shops but sell to other stores as well. Most of the British high street now creates its own product in its own design rooms which is what makes it so special.

I started in fashion early... and the

I like to be busy all the time. Here’s an example. Recently I was in Australia, designing one day with my licensees in Melbourne then presenting Fashion on the Field at the Melbourne Cup for channel 7 TV. After that I went straight to Osaka in Japan to work with my licensees there on new product for spring. After that I got back from Japan and started a three day advertising shoot in London. I then had a series of store appearances in Debenhams and the gentleman’s evenings for my bespoke tailoring collection. Wherever I am, I’m normally up at 5:30-6am and normally get finished around 8-9pm.

My best advice is to learn to present and sell. It doesn’t matter at what stage you are at in your career you always have to sell your product or yourself. Doing it well is a skill in itself. You might be the greatest designer on earth but if you can’t sell your ideas on to a potential customer, employer, or financier you won’t get off the ground.

8

I love shopping in New York, and Bloomingdales is one of my favourites. I regularly visit Tokyo and shops like Isetan are truly fantastic. In Britain I have a few favourites like a menswear store in London called The Library. Online, I think the Apple shop takes some beating.

I take inspiration from everywhere. Each season I put together six theme ideas for men and six

It saddens me to say that I think London Fashion Week is largely irrelevant given the amount of money and effort that goes into putting it on

Be yourself and believe in yourself. If you are false about what you do or your beliefs you will always get found out. If you firmly believe in what you are doing, then the pleasure of just doing it is all you need. The worst moment of my career was when my little shop in Blackheath caught fire after some builders left a fire burning in some upstairs rooms they were decorating and we had to largely start again. My sweetest triumph, I suppose, was being awarded the CBE for services to fashion.

I think British high street fashion is just about the best in the world. I would like to think that I had a small part to do with that. When I

traditional way. When I left college I couldn’t get a permanent job. I did some draughtsman work and 3D illustration, I decided to open a small shop in Blackheath selling the work of friends of mine from college. This range took six months to put together as they were working in their spare time. We sold out on the first day and I was faced with an empty shop. Luckily a lady called Frieda Fairway appeared the next day who was Mary Quant’s design room manager. She had worked for Mary as well as Hardy Amies and Norman Hartnell. Mrs Fairway said whatever you can draw I can make. Within a week we had set up a workroom in the rear of the shop with a massive empty space. Sid the cutter and six machinists, with Frieda cutting the patterns, I was in the fashion business and Frieda taught me everything I know.

ideas for women. I just dream them up and research them. They may appear completely random but I sense them in the fashion ‘atmosphere’. I then figure how to interpret those ideas not just into clothes but also into home products. These themes have to work in Japan, China and Australia as well as in Britain. Last autumn I was influenced by Mad Men. I presented this a year ago because the first time I saw it I felt it was going to be a big influence. I have to work a year ahead on themes so you have to latch on quickly. The whole late Fifties revival in both menswear and womenswear has been a big deal around the world.

I try to keep weekends free even if I’m travelling abroad so I have at least one day to myself.

Cycling is my favourite past time so

I’ve made a few fashion faux pas myself.

Saturdays and Sundays I head off on my bike. I keep bikes in Australia and South Africa so that when I’m there I can just pick up where I left off but if I’m in other places I’ll take a bike with me. Life on the road is good for me, I get time to think and keep fit.

I normally only wear my own clothes but years ago I bought a Yohji Yamamoto suit in Tokyo. It was in baby blue cotton and seemed a good idea at the time. The fit was terrible and it was even worse when I got it back to Britain. I never wore it and eventually dumped it on a charity shop.

I have no musical talent but I would have liked to have become a musician. I have a lot of friends in the music business and I envy them being able to pick up an instrument and entertain at either a small party or in front of thousands. It’s a great talent. If I hadn’t become a designer I probably would have liked to have done something in cycling or maybe more in TV. I presented my own show for 12 years so directing TV always interests me. I also used to shoot my own fashion pictures, so photography may have been another option.

I still have goals. I have just opened my first three shops in Beijing so I’m now really working hard to make our business a success in China. It’s a fantastic burgeoning market and I’m enjoying being part of it.

It saddens me to say that I think London Fashion Week is largely irrelevant given the amount of money and effort that goes into putting on the event twice a year. The purpose of putting on Fashion Weeks in Milan, Paris and New York has changed in recent years. Previously the shows were used to show a collection from which invited buyers would place orders. These days the business of buying has been done months before the shows because of production lead times and the global breadth of distribution. Now the shows are promotional events where the major brands show their collections to the world’s press and also invite their major international distributors to savour what has already been put in motion. In Britain we simply don’t have enough major international brands that warrant the time and expense of the world coming to London. We have a handful of brands with international clout, so the rest of the week is taken up with small companies struggling to make ends meet, that are just putting on a show but with no reason. No international distribution, very few domestic outlets they can sell to and press that in the main is either interested only in featuring the product of the big advertisers or the high street. We are deluding ourselves if we think that in the modern fashion arena London has much to offer. The British Fashion Council needs to stop and think how we can begin to create an environment where brands can be nurtured to make it on the international stage in the way Burberry has done.

10

My style inspiration? I always think Bryan Ferry looks pretty cool. In the main though, I look back at old movie stars like Cary Grant and Fred Astaire for real inspirational dressing. Every now and again, I like total escape. I think my best holiday ever was at a place called Coco Point on the island of Barbuda in the Caribbean. Twenty-four houses on the headland of the island, with white sand right outside the house and a club house for dinner, a fully stocked bar that you didn’t have to pay for and you didn’t need any money as it was all in. Sheer bliss.

My style

secrets Katy Poulson, one half of Dan and Katy on the

Capital FM Breakfast Show, shares her style diary What’s an average day for you? I get up at 4.45am in order to be at work on the Capital Breakfast Show for 5.30am. After the show we have meetings about the next day, record bits of production we may need, do interviews with celebs or filming bits for the website. We are usually finished by 1 or 2pm, then I spend my afternoons hunting for bargains or doing up the house that I’ve just bought! Painting old furniture while watching Midsomer Murders is my ideal afternoon.

Career high and low? Before I landed this job I was working for a TV company where the presenter called me ‘the runner,’ she knew my name, but was very rude. When I got this job I took great pleasure telling her that ‘the runner’ was now a radio presenter!

What’s your take on fashion? It kills me to see people following the fashions even if it doesn’t suit them. I think the turnaround in shops with new fashions is so quick that often some people will spend a fortune just to keep up to date with the latest trend. It’s important to cling on to things that you feel comfortable in and that suit your body shape, and accessorising can breathe new life into older clothes and make you stand out from the crowd. Where do you like to shop in Birmingham? High street shops I love include Primark, Topshop, and Urban Outfitters, I love ‘Cow’ in Digbeth as I adore vintage clothes, but my main love is charity shops, there’s no better feeling when you dig out a perfect outfit for less than £5. It feels great knowing no one can copy your outfit as they’ll struggle to match it exactly! I like high street fashion because the shops have a great selection at really reasonable prices.

What’s an ideal day off? I’m a country girl at heart, so love being outdoors. I also love exercise so a fun day at the beach with friends, surf boards and a barbecue would be pretty sweet! www.stylebirmingham.com

Style 20 Introduction.indd 15

Which beauty treatments do you swear by? It’s not really a treatment, but I think nothing feels better than going for a run. It clears your mind, gets fresh air into your lungs, makes you feel great afterwards and keeps you in shape!

What’s always in your make-up bag? Blusher and mascara, a bit of colour in the cheeks and some mascara to help enhance your eyes.

What’s been your own worst fashion faux pas? Probably my collection of Christmas jumpers. I know they are wrong, but I can’t help myself.

Editor’s

PICK

Who are your style icons? I love Gwen Stefani she’s got a real quirky dress sense and carries it off with such confidence. Where do you like to holiday? A few years ago, I did a charity project in South Africa that blew my mind. I went alone but met loads of like-minded people of a similar age from all around the world. Together we built a home for a family who had been affected by AIDS. It wasn’t the most relaxing holiday, but meeting such inspiring kids and families had a massive effect on me. To glimpse such poverty helps to put your problems into perspective. I’d recommend it to anyone, who wants to do something a little different on their jollies.

Are you organised or chaotic? I have a quote in my bedroom that says ‘Being organised interferes with my creativity!’ I’m most definitely a gowith-the-flow type of person, I roll with things I enjoy, ideas I have and new experiences that look exciting! Your three golden rules of style? 1. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. 2. Dress to suit you shape and style. 3. Feel the love for vintage: your mum may have an old dress from the 60s that fits you perfectly! Tune in to the Capital Breakfast Show with Dan & Katy every weekday from 6-10am on 102.2 Capital FM, digital radio & TV, and online at www.capitalfm.com

five minutes with...

SADIE FROST ACTRESS, WRITER AND CO-DESIGNER OF HIP LABEL FROST FRENCH

I shop in all sorts of places but I’ve come to the conclusion that British high street fashion can be mixed. Some of it’s good, some of it’s not: I like American Apparel, but even then I find it can be very samey and generic. I do have a few favourite places to shop though: I love the Start boutique in London’s Hoxton, Liberty on Regent Street and the famous Collette in Paris.

Marianne Faithfull is my all-time style icon. As for my own style, I have five words that sum it up: androgynous, pop, sultry, cheeky and rebellious! • Floozie by Frost French is available in Debenhams.

Frill swimsuit £35

When it comes to creating for the Frost French label, I find that lots of things inspire me but especially travelling. I love to travel and get away and I have to say that, on that score, I’ve been a lucky girl and had some amazing holidays. Hard to name the best ever destination, but family holidays with my kids are always the best. We went to Ibiza last year and that was really special. Other than holidays, I don’t normally take time off, but on the rare occasions I can sneak a day off work I like to watch French movies. It’s good to not be just known for doing one thing. I’m lucky, because I write and act as well as design so I can mix things up. I’ve branched out into ‘lifestyle’ designing too: I designed some homeware for Liptons and kitchens for Swan Homes. I have plenty of ambitions left to fulfil, though: for 2011, we’re really focusing on building more of an online presence for Frost French. We may live in challenging times, but I still think London Fashion Week is relevant to the industry. In fact, I think London Fashion Week is very exciting. There’s a lot of British talent out there and some interesting new designers coming through for 2011 as well.

hipster £8.50

The best piece of business advice I’ve ever been given was to grow our business slowly. It’s sensible, solid advice. We haven’t had a particular setback but I have to say that it’s been pretty tough the whole way through.

When it comes to beauty, I have a few faithfuls I swear by. I love Linda Meredith facials, Environ skincare and Lucas’ Paw Paw ointment for dry lips, scrapes and burns. I keep it in my make-up bag at all times. It’s in there with mascara and YSL Touche Eclat, which I can’t leave home without.

and stripe Stripe perfume bra £17.50

I made a move from acting into fashion more than ten years ago. My friend Jemima French and I set up the Frost French label, designing lingerie. To start with it was more conceptual things and playing with fashion ideas – underwear that was fragranced or pyjamas with night owls on that made bird noises. It’s evolved and grown over the years.

TRANSITION TRENDS

Just a few key pieces can ease your way from winter into stylish spring

Layers

With the uber-feminine, 50s-style silhouette still strong on the catwalks at Louis Vuitton, DKNY, Prada and many others, the look’s adapting for late winter with the addition of layered knitwear. Keep the hourglass motif by belting everything, and choose cardigans and sweaters in fine cashmere or merino to avoid bulk.

Roaring twenties

2

Burberry began this trend with its shearling aviators and jodhpurs last year, and now all things 20s are big style news. Drop waists, flapper cocktail dresses, statement pearls and headbands are already in, but look out for Art Deco inspired accessories too, like these sunglasses, £80 at Urban Outfitters.

4

Fabulous knitwear

Probably the easiest of all transition trends: stay warm and cosy in fine knitwear but with a new season twist, in added texture. Look out for embellishment in embroidered satin motifs, studs and beads and even leather and suede patches. McQ studded sweater dress, £295, and Markus Lupfer jumper, £240, Harvey Nichols.

5 Three quarter trousers

CHARLES VOGEL

We’ve had the 7/8ths length, the clamdigger and the palazzo pant: for spring, ¾ length trousers are an emerging trend. Just higher than an ankle boot and perfect for showing off sandals, invest in a pair now and wear with long boots. Look out for texture too: sequin detail, ribbon trim and wetlook fabrics are all key.

6 Print

7

Full of personality and with attitude to spare, a print tee will look as good with skinnies and boots as a skirt and sandals come Easter. Invest in neutral colour big prints for added style points and maximum wearability. Print tee shirts, £25 each at Miss Selfridge.

Statement jewels One of the most exciting trends for spring is investment jewellery. Give your £5 high street bracelets a rest and invest in some grown-up glamour instead: for spring/summer 2011, it’s a strong trend that will set you apart from the pack. We love the Kara by Kara Ross range at Harvey Nichols, prices starting at £110: Dannii Minogue and Kim Cattrall are fans.

Bright colour

Editor’s

With neutrals still cutting a swathe through the catwalks, accessories are picking up on bright and bold colour. Choose a bag in a bright, or opt for shoes and belt in a contrasting colour and your winter outfit will have instant spring appeal. Marc by Marc Jacobs baby Aidan ostrich bag, £290, Harvey Nichols.

9 Spring maxi

Kitten heels Their triumphant return to the fashion spotlight has been touted for a year now but this spring, low heels will once again flood the high street. Get a jump on the fashionistas with a slingback pair that just says ‘new season style’. We like these Nikki heels, in both black and ivory patent leather at Dune, £65.

www.stylebirmingham.com

Style 20 Womens.indd 37

10

So easy for summer, but the maxi can look way too full-on in winter. How to transition? Avoid cotton and choose jersey instead, that will fall and flatter your shape and team as well with a leather jacket now as flat sandals in May. Tessie blue jersey maxi dress,£70, Monsoon.

Beauty NEWS We’re in the pink as the new season starts...

STYLE LOVES

Estee Lauder’s latest fragrance bursts with invigorating mandarin and sophisticated floral notes, perfect for lifting your spirits on dark, wintry days. The Limited Edition Wild Elixir, £32, is in Selfridges now and on all Lauder counters from February.

GREAT GIFT For Valentine’s, for a special occasion, for yourself... why not indulge in Molton Brown’s uber-lovely Paradisiac Pink Pepperpod bath and shower gel, £17.50, for an instant pick-me-up. It’s got added zing. Find it in the Molton Brown store in Bullring or at House of Fraser.

BETTER BALANCE

LUSCIOUS LASHES Paper lashes are the latest celebrity beauty craze – and these ones would make even Lady Gaga envious. New in at Harvey Nichols, the Paperself collection is delicately pretty, with three styles to chose from, each infused with symbolic meaning rooted in Chinese culture: horses, symbolic of success; peony, for happiness and good fortune; and peach blossom to represent love and romance. Prices start from £13.

Even the best complexions can take a hit when cold weather reigns. Central heating, bitter winds and plummeting temperatures can cause dark spots, discolouration and dry patches, ageing skin before your very eyes. Turn back time with a good skin-correcting make-up that evens out colour and covers any circles and lines. Origins has a fantastic new compact foundation, Brighter By Nature, with an amazing SPF 30, for just £24. It’s got comforting lavender and rosemary to prevent any irritation, too.

TRIED AND TESTED BLUSH BEAUTY

SWEET CHARITY No 7 Protect & Perfect Intense Day Cream SPF15, £22, Boots The hype: ‘Proven to visibly improve deep lines and wrinkles for younger looking skin in four weeks’. The result: Tested on dry, sensitive skin, this cream worked a minor miracle, softening fine lines in just a few days and bringing comfort without greasiness. Use on slightly damp skin for added effect: the cream sinks in, and you can apply make-up straightaway, with no sticky residue. Worth the money and more.

Style 20 Beauty.indd 45

Take a leaf out of Liz Hurley’s book, and choose soft, flattering pinks for a warm glow this winter. The new Pretty Powerful Palette from Bobbi Brown, £42, has everything you need to get a healthy glow, from rosy shimmer wash eyeshadow to lip gloss in bubble pink.

Do your bit for a good cause and perk up your make-up bag into the bargain. For the fourth year running, Clinique has partnered up with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity for the KISS IT BETTER appeal, raising money to fund research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer. This year, Clinique’s created a gorgeous Limited Edition Smoothie Kisses Lip Gloss Set in a cutesy pink bag. Sold in House of Fraser during February, £4 of the £22.50 price goes to this very worthy cause.

Haircare Q&A Your winter hair problems sorted Q: I’m growing my crop into a wavy bob like Keira Knightley’s, but it’s getting dry. How can I get it back in top condition without a trim? A: The problem with growing out very short hair is that it can take ages and the hair gets drier and more brittle all the time. Invest in a good quality detangler to use after every wash: Melvita Capiforce Organic Detangling

hair Winter

Keep locks silky and shining right through to spring

STYLE LOVES Nicky Clarke’s Detox & Purify Straightener has a high temperature of 230ºC for faster styling but floating ceramic tiles to prevent damage. It’s £59.99 from Argos.

Balm and Split Ends Serum will have it swinging and shiny in no time (from £15, leading department stores).

Q: I need a new hairdryer small enough for my gym bag. Ideas? A: We love the new Corioliss Mini Vintage Hair Dryer, in retro floral patterns: small but perfectly formed! It’s £23.75 from Boots.

BIG IT UP If you want superstar waves or big statement hair for special nights out this winter, a volumising spray is your trusty go-to product. Spritz through damp hair, add rollers and either leave to air-dry or blast with a dryer on cool. The Tigi Bedhead Superstar Volumizing Leave-In Conditioner, £6.84 in all high street pharmacies, is one of the best on the market for instant volume.

Q: My naturally curly hair just won’t stay flat after I straighten it. Is my hair wax not strong enough? A: Wax isn’t the best thing for curly hair: try a hydration-heavy styling product instead, like the Umberto Giannini Sleek & Chic collection. The Salon Straight Blow Dry Cream contains Vitamin B5 to help smooth even the most brittle locks and a slick of Seriously Straight Gloss Serum will hold the style for hours. Each is £4.89 from Boots.

TRIED AND TESTED Charles Worthington Hair Healer Salon Results Leave-In Conditioner, £4.99, Superdrug and Boots Hype: All-day long nourishment for all types of hair. Result: Light as a feather, this leave-in conditioner didn’t leave hair sticky, oily or flat, but instead gave beachy waves and a soft feel. Tried on dry hair as an overnight balm, it brought a noticeable gloss to newly-coloured tresses. Worth double the price!

CATWALK REPORT Winter hair was super-conditioned and ultra-shiny on the runways, with mid- to long-length styles at the forefront. Keeping long hair in best possible condition takes work: steal a secret from raven-haired Angelina Jolie, and try one of the beauty world’s fave cult brands, Moroccanoil. Infused with Argan oil, silk, keratins and avocado, the haircare range is highly concentrated, containing 30 per cent active ingredients compared to the industry standard 10 per cent. Try Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner for a few weeks and really see it working: £15.85 each, from selected salons: 0800 310 1133, www. moroccanoil.com

MEN

This month we’re Investing in sharp new season accessories at Gieves & Hawkes to lift last year’s suit... the cool slogan tees in the Urban Exclusives range at Urban Outfitters... putting a watch from the new season range at Armani Exchange in Bullring on our mostwanted list... consigning coats to the back of the wardrobe in favour of a spring jacket from Harvey Nichols’ men’s department (D&G anyone?)... channelling the 60s in Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green label at Selfridges

RED VINTAGE GINGHAM COTTON NEW HARRINGTON £240

BLACK PUPPYTOOTH COTTON HOODED PARKA £390

The urban hunter trend is still strong as winter gives way to spring, so keep your trapper hats, fur-trimmed parkas, combat trousers and alpine socks at the front of the wardrobe. Give the look a new year update with a checked wool jacket: warm enough to keep out the cold, lightweight enough to wear right through spring. Topman has this perfect version for £125.

Tailoring has a distinct Italian feel for 2011. Forget last year’s very English tweed suiting and cord Oxfords: this spring and summer will be all about living la dolce vita in close-cut flat-fronted trousers and fine-knit polo shirts. Get a jump on the new trends with Marks & Spencer’s Autograph collection: polo shirt £22, Blue Harbour Luxury chinos £35, Collezione shoes £55, and Collezione belt £25.

TREND ALERT RED 6 BUTTON PIQUE POLO EGYPTIAN COTTON £80,

STRAWBERRY COLLARLESS TEE WITH CHEST BADGE £75.

LINEN SCARF £75

Easiest way to transition into the new season? Add some tartan to your look. All over the runways everywhere from Alexander McQueen to Prada, tartan is high on the fashion agenda for spring, but a word of warning: keep the look confined to accessories or risk Scots overload. As ever, tartan classicist Ralph Lauren has the trend nailed. Check out the new collection at House of Fraser: scarf £70, hat £40.

Inspired by the art, music and culture scene of the 1960s, and with an extensive collection of outerwear, jackets and classic separates, the collection is BLACK VINTAGE NEEDLE STRIPE COTTON LENNON JACKET £285,

very much shot through with the singer’s own style. Highlights? The collection sees a strong emphasis on tailoring, cut and high-quality fabrics in a colour palette of red, navy, black and ecru. Key pieces include the Lennon Jacket, Seersucker Windrunner, Dogtooth Harrington, and Vintage Paisley Kaftan, but we also loved the lightweight knitwear, six button polos and the classic parka in cotton and nylon. TURN BACK TIME

For the time-pushed, finding a shampoo that will do a good job without leaving hair flat, flyaway, bouffy or dull is a tricky task. Paul Mitchell’s The Wash just won the 2010 Look Fantastic Award for Best Shampoo for Normal Hair, and it’s a hard-worker. Perfect for your gym bag or morning shower, it’s a light shampoo designed to help equalise the moisture content in hair leaving it clean and full of body. It’s also got strengthening panthenol, ideal for backing-up thinning hair. Find it in salons for £8.35: www.paulmitchell.com

TV presenter Phil Oldershaw has worked with the BBC, Channels 4 and Five, BRMB, MTV and Galaxy, and with celebrities including Graham Norton, Michelle Collins and Sonia. Here, he tells Style Birmingham about his love of the city, whether it’s shopping, socialising or simply hanging out with friends

arr

PHIL OLDERSHAW Factor’s Joe

Alan Carr was also in town, at the LG Arena, with a host of other guests including Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight, Ed Byrne, Rolf Harris, Jo Brand, Björn Again, Slade and Adrian Edmondson & The Bad Shepherds, all performing for Rock with Laughter, which proved once more to be a magnificent success. Alan later enjoyed a night out

on the town with friends showing them how to party with style in Birmingham. If partying was the order of the festive season then I must say thanks to Steve Denyer, Ed James and other team members from Global Radio’s Heart FM for a great night at the Chameleon Bar: it was wild, guys! The team at Chameleon are great and I must admit this place has become a secret haunt of mine to meet with great people while indulging in some fine cocktails or a lovely Illy coffee. It appears that the snow really knocked us off our feet this year, literally for some! I even found myself helping to push workers and shoppers as their cars found it hard to struggle through this blanket of mischief that spread itself quietly across the country. It raised much interest in the media particularly about the effect it had on high street shopping as many people stayed home and switched to ordering online, believing this would be the saving grace. It soon transpired that postal services were also in trouble and really couldn’t cope with online demands, with many orders not being delivered in time. As a person who lives, works and socialises within the city I was secretly pleased that on this occasion modern technology was taking a bash. I’m all for the latest in high tech equipment and systems and greatly value their benefits on society. However, Birmingham is one of the most amazing modern cities for shopping in the world, and I have travelled a bit! people all say to me ‘get out there’. It is far too easy to sit behind a laptop, use a phone app or merely pick up a phone to make a call and order something these days. To me, the real fun of shopping is getting dressed up and making an effort to parade out into the high street showing your own style, feeling the textures of clothes, playing dress-up and trying them on, talking to staff members and getting their knowledge on gadgets, make-up, holidays and more. How better to do that than with a friend, or friends? Life is short and our city is beautiful with clean streets, floral displays, helpful wardens, canals, tastefully-lit buildings and features that really capture your soul, mood and imagination. If you can shop, experience, and share memorable moments with family or friends and maybe indulge in a drinking or dining experience too, then I can honestly say, to me, you’re living a fuller life! Birmingham by day is great… but have you seen how lovely it looks at night, too? Spring will soon be upon us and there’s so much going on in our city for you to get involved in or to experience. Come and enjoy some fashion therapy and if you see me, come say hello as I too will be making the most of what’s on offer! By the way, happy new year!

X Phil meets The

It almost seems like a distant memory, doesn’t it? The spirit of Christmas - and maybe the mayhem of partying to see in the New Year – all now sadly passed. The run-up to Christmas saw me attending a fair few parties with friends and colleagues in homes and businesses around the city, excluding family events of course! Just before Christmas, X Factor 2009 winner Joe McElderry was in town performing at the legendary Nightingale Club, and I was invited to host the night to a capacity crowd.

VILLA MIDLANDS FOOD Be Prepared. Never before has Aston Villa’s motto been more appropriate. The club’s billionaire owner Randy Lerner has embarked on a new venture within his football club, Villa Midlands Food. The first hospitality training programme to be set up by a football club, VMF has given 11 young local people searching for employment a chance to learn the tricks of the trade under the Birmingham Apprentice Scheme. Being blissfully unaware of the concept of fine-dining, the recruits have been taken back to basics with their training for the hospitality industry. The programme aims to teach the apprentices the details, providing them with all the experience they will need in the future. Inspired by the varied cultures and ethnicities of the Aston area, the specifically designed threecourse menu cooked and served by the trainees – supervised by Head Chef Richard Dutton – is offered in the VMF Restaurant at £18.50 per person. Located in the curry capital of the UK, where possible, the menu features local produce. Dishes like Abdul’s tikka masala cod have been developed by the apprentices, showing just how much they have already achieved. The restaurant is open Thursday to Saturday 7pm to 10pm and,

due to increasing demand from 13 February will be open Sundays from 12 noon to 3pm. For most of the trainees, this is their first experience of a full-time job and, as their menu states ‘please be patient with us as we are learning’. With special menus required for events coming up including Burns Night and Valentine’s Day, the apprentices are going to have to put everything they have learnt to good use. With a designated Haggis course and traditional Raspberry Cranachan on the menu, there is no better place to celebrate Burns Night than the VMF restaurant. For more information visit www.avhe.co.uk or call 0121 326 1570 to reserve a table.

This truly is another jewel in the crown for the Southside of Birmingham. The Angel has the ability to make you feel relaxed while delivering great food and service at fantastic prices.

The Angel Bar & Brasserie is a new cosmopolitan drinking and dining experience located within the regenerated section of Southside, close to the Hippodrome theatre. TV Presenter Phil Oldershaw went to check out the food and drink on offer. The first thing that grabs your attention in The Angel is the grand frontage. The entrance reminded me of an elegant lounge where distinctive and varied textured seating titillates the eye; the restaurant, grand in scale with high ceilings and the walls furnished with beautiful mirrors, pictures, artwork, plasmas and ornate designer pieces too! As it was a Sunday, what excited me most was the amount of people that were there to indulge. The whole ambience of this venue was comfortable, relaxing and above all, friendly! I could also see that the venue had the capability of ‘cranking it

I was impressed at the Roast Sunday lunch menu, which gave a home-from-home feel. The roast was available in two courses at £6.45 or three courses at £9.25, I couldn’t believe my eyes at the price especially when the portions were so hearty; including the succulent beef. There was a wide selection of mouth-watering dishes on this menu that included tapas/starters such as Patatas Bravas, Garlic Prawns or Chicken Wings, there were some 6 pasta dishes such as Polpette Pork Meatballs or Salmon Alfredo. The Grill included The Angel Burger, an 8oz Sirloin at £11.95 and The Works Grill, at only £12.95, for an utterly mammoth collective of tasty steak, chorizo, chicken, chips, mushrooms, peppers and tomato. The garlic mushrooms were amazing, real fresh mushrooms cooked with fresh garlic and butter for my starter; my main was the Roast Beef lunch, which oozed tasty juices from the beef and was accompanied

by a great selection of fresh seasonal vegetables and perfectly cooked potatoes. Finding room, I managed to finish with The Angel Sundae, which was chocolate & vanilla ice cream, with cake, sauces and white chocolate shavings … beautiful! This venue has a great selection of drinks whatever your mood! I soon found myself looking at a beautiful back bar display before sitting and perusing over a fine wine, champagne and cocktail menu too!

Ingredients

Turn down the heat and simmer the sauce until you have about 150mls. Remove from the heat and cool. Once cooled, pour half over the salmon and leave to marinate, best overnight in the fridge (or for one hour at least). To cook the salmon, pre-heat the grill to its hottest setting. Lift out the salmon, leaving a little sauce on the fish, then place onto a grilling tray or dish. Cook for 6-8 minutes, depending on the temperature of the grill, or until the salmon is just cooked, best left undercooked. Meanwhile, boil the rest of the marinade that is left, and serve with the salmon as a dipping sauce. Serve the salmon with the sauce and the chutney.

HEALTHY START Ditched the bacon sarnies and croissants in favour of a better breakfast? For a healthy start on-the go, try a Stoats Uber Bar: it’s sugar-, dairyand wheat-free, and packed with good stuff including Scottish oats, freeze dried fruit and crunchy sunflower seeds. Choose from Strawberry and Coconut or Pineapple and Mango: priced at 99p, the bars are available in healthfood stores and delis.

If your New Year’s resolution was to cut down or quit alcohol, it doesn’t have to mean giving up wine, as there are now several great alcohol-free options available. We like Eisberg Riesling: not only is it alcohol free but the process of removing the alcohol also skims off a number of calories so a 125ml glass comes in at just 34 calories compared to an average of 85 for a standard glass of wine! Find it in most supermarkets, priced from £3.

BE A MASTERCHEF If you’re watching the new series of MasterChef, take heart: you can now recreate the culinary magic at home, with the publication of the new Masterchef At Home book, £20. With 200 of the best recipes from the 2010 MasterChef season, you can impress your friends and family. The book is divided into clear sections covering starters, mains and desserts, and features inspiring recipes from 2010 MasterChef Champion, Dhruv Baker’s Spiced Fish and Chips to Celebrity MasterChef winner, Lisa Faulkner’s Almond Panna Cotta, plus nine complete menus from previous winners.
