BOOM

BOOM HOTEL For this project, the design process began with each student’s fetish object. The fetish object was used as a tool to identify specific customers and aesthetic profiles for each hotel. Here, the San Sebastian glasses by Etnia served as the inspiration. The glasses’ influences of mid-century modern, 1950s brow line and the 1950s horn rim, update the pair of glasses with an unexpected pop of playfulness. The name for the hotel, BOOM, was inspired by the synonymous phrase of the mid-century, “Baby Boomers”. Material palette and furniture choices were also drawn from the object in a mixture of woods, purple lit elevator bays and signage, brushed chrome and concrete to create this slick public space. I envisioned creating a new dynamic lounge that would evoke a sense of awe and curiosity. The lobby is atmospheric and challenges the usual aesthetics of a conventional hotel lobby.

This room was inspired by a pair of glasses made by ETNIA. A spanish company that uniquley combines materials and colors to create inventive frames. I abstracted the idea of the frame and created a continual band around the room. This band creates the bar counter, bed side tables, and wrap around bench. Materials are walnut, bleached poplar, glass, acetate, brushed chrome and concrete.

TEA was a retail project located underneath the Highline. The concept was “Slow Space. The space is currated through the different experiences of the tea. Upon entering the space there is the scent wall. Loose leaf tea leaves are in test tubes allowing the customer to smell the varieties of tea. The middle of the store is the tasting and ordering space. Here glass dispensers display the color of the different teas and allows the customer to sample the product. Located in the back is the entrance into the tea room. It is inset into the ground and the furniture is lowered to resemble a modern japanese tea room. Along the wall is an inset planter growing fresh tea leaves.

LIT

LIT was a light object I created while exploring the concept texture. It is layers of folded plastic that are activated by the light.

UNEXPECTED

UNEXPECTED was a light object that happened unexpectedly. It is created with two types of glue. One being thinner and delicate. The other foaming into larger pieces to provide stability. I created sheets of the unique mixture and created these light objects.

retrofit Retrofit was a enviornmental design renovation project. We had to take our bathroom or kitchen and apply the principles of sustainability. I chose the bathroom and love the look of concrete. Upon researching concrete in order to make it environmentally sustainable and more durable it can be mixed with fly ash. Fly ash is the ash produced during the combustion of coal. This ash can be captured and mixed with concrete. I also discovered a company, Concrete-Blond, which creates concrete panels with 60% recycled material. They take wallpaper patterns and cast them and they also come in a variety of colors and textures. I loved how it could take hard material and make it appear soft. These panels would be made with fly ash, sealed and line the shower walls, while the rest of the bathroom would be covered in fly ash concrete with a custom sink and shelving units.
