THE POOL HOUSE Residential Professional Work l Project Architect Site location - Vadodara, India Total Plot Area - 30,780 sq ft Built up Area - 10,670 sq ft Status - Construction in-progress The project’s objective was to maximize connectivity between various areas and create a weekend home ambiance. The primary concept evolved in response to the specified requirements, emphasizing open planning and linking outdoor and indoor spaces through courtyards and decks, resulting in an opulent residence. The architectural language adopted is a blend of modernity and minimalism, offering a unique and experiential quality. As you enter the foyer, the space unfolds, revealing different interconnected areas within the house that seamlessly connect to the outdoor pool area, deck, and a distinctive lotus pond. I played a pivotal role in developing the conceptual design, understanding client requirements, and creating a 3D model for enhanced spatial comprehension. I also contributed to construction drawings and coordinated with on-site agencies for development progress.

HOTEL DESIGN

Hospitality Professional Work l Architectural Designer Site location - Gujarat,India Total Plot Area - 6019 sq m Built up Area - 5719 sq m Area per key - 30 sq m Status - Schematic drawings approval stage Ginger, a prominent member of an esteemed hotel group in India, showcases a design marked by simplicity and clean lines, accentuated by a gradient of colors in the window shades. Situated opposite another hotel, both separated by a vast public garden, our role included providing schematic designs for both hotels. The entrance porch features a lightweight metal structure, creating a simple yet elegant space. The overall architectural design is characterized by earthy tones, a gradient of fins, and strategically placed palm trees, enhancing the hotel’s aesthetic appeal. My primary responsibility was to finalize all drawings for the schematic design level being part of the team, create a detailed model of the hotel design with renders, and actively engage in meetings with other consultants to refine the drawings. Additionally, I took on the role of mentoring interns throughout the project and successfully compiled a comprehensive final presentation for the schematic design phase.

THE SCHOOL

Institutional Professional Work l Architect Site location - Gujarat,India Total Plot Area - 88210 sqft Built up Area - 51800 sqft Status - Completed The school plays a crucial role in nurturing the growth of children. Therefore, the optimal layout was designed with a central court serving as a versatile space for playground activities, gatherings, and assemblies, acting as a focal point around which the classrooms are strategically planned. Elements such as a robust stage backdrop and double-height staircase courtyards were incorporated to create lasting impressions on the students. Consequently, the overall architecture maintains simplicity. The “C-shape building” was deemed the most suitable, accommodating all grades and facilitating a functional organization of programs within the school. I was tasked with developing the design from the conceptual stage, taking into account the classroom requirements and the school’s philosophy. The challenge involved working within budget constraints while also considering children as the end users. This experience provided me with the opportunity to broaden my perspectives on organizing programs effectively and creating an impaction , nurturing environment for students. I made construction drawings, developed 3D model and co-ordinated with structure,MEP and on-site construction agencies.

H YBRID E COLOGIES : L ANDSCAPE P LAY E DGE S TIMULATION Design Studio Academic l M. Arch l Sem 01 Originally established in 1895 as Wollaston Golf Club, this 36-hole course is located above the Neponset River estuary, situated between Quincy's former Granite Railway route and a suburban neighborhood. The golf club reflects Boston's urban history and grapples with challenges posed by climate change. However, it has faced criticism for isolating the community due to specific site conditions. An essential aspect of urban design involves redefining the site's edge to enhance public accessibility and create a welcoming atmosphere. This is achieved by strategically introducing soft edges that seamlessly blend the site with its surrounding context. Such an approach aims to foster a more inclusive and harmonious environment, encouraging community engagement and instilling a sense of belonging. Ultimately, this redesign makes the site more attractive and user-friendly for those who interact with it.

C HARACTERISTICS OF M ARKERS P ERCEIVED T HROUGH M ENTAL M APS Research Thesis Academic l Sem 10 Case Study l Vadodara City The aim is to understand which are the different type of markers that are perceived by local people through mental mapping of their journey and how they help to orient in the city. The intend is also to understand the characteristics of markers that are peculiar and its influence on the memory of the person.

19

Mental maps

About the city

Markers at city level

They are the perceptions of people about the environment and the things around them “Mental maps are a mix of objective knowledge and subjective perceptions: precise knowledge about the location of geographic features as well as impressions of places, rough estimates of size and location, and a general sense of the connections between places.” Mental maps (or cognitive maps) are the mental representations of the physical world.

Vadodara is situated on the banks of Vishwamitri river, in central Gujarat. The strong history of the city impacts the structural growth of the city. The enormous works in form of various institutions serves people keeping alive the dialect architecture of the city. It has mostly flourished under the Maratha rule of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III , an era of progress and achievements. It was one of the Princely States during the British Empire ruled by Gaekwad Dynasty.

The labyrinth streets in the old city area are accompanied with bazaar areas, shrines and ancestral houses. Markers at city level are predominantly monumental/historic buildings and major nodes of the city. They act as anchor points and form a strong imagery in the cityscape and can easily be perceived by the people. Markers like the Gates in the city area are highly interpreted as transitional elements.

What we see

Observations

Raopura tower

• Associational markers are more remembered in the vicinity of starting point. • At neighborhood level, religious buildings and civic buildings as markers • At the junctions the edges are identified differently • Along the straight paths lack of other secondary markers due to one dominant marker along the edge or at the end • Similar shops identified as one , rather than specific names • Loss of direction happens when there is a curved road, which is considered as straight only.

Directional -Dominance The Raopura Clock tower built in Indo-Sarcenic Style becomes the most significant object in the skyline of the area. Approximately 16meter tall it traps our vision towards it and guides our journey with respect to it. It was built in memory of Maharani Chimnabai in 1896. The clock tower provides opportunities to see the timing from all four directions and the top is made in Chattri style.

Edge - legibility

Amba mata ni pol is one of the oldest street in the city, with very divine temple situated in the lane. Passing through the MG road , one does not have the direct vision of the temple but the activities such as flower vendors, puja shops, street vendors selling chundis and garlands make the markers for the people.

Overall the person relates more to block level markers which include commercial shops or temples during the start of the journey. As the city level markers become dominant, the secondary markers are identified which have distinct edge condition or physical characteristic. Police stations and religious places are mentioned clearly due to its strong symbolic feature. Sometimes the physical characteristics of the shops like the reflecting and bright mirror surfaces in perfume shops along with it aromas catches up ones attention visually and sensitively.

Conclusion

The various categories are inter-related many a times which comprehends the marker. The intensity of markers also changes depending on the shape of the route or path. A city is perceived in multi dimensional space where each element has its unique significance which is anticipated by its users in many different ways. As a result, the legibility of the place gets manipulated on the basis of the characteristics of the element and the surrounding. The study forms a basis for urban development of the city intriguing the meager considerations as well as its effect on the surrounding as a whole.

CULTURE

The people in Kutch have inherited the skills from their ancestors which keeps the art alive in small regions of the district. The varied culture of each community ,is linked with its distinct history. This essence needs to be revived and presented in the contemporary world. A transition has to be done from rigidity to something where there is infinite scope of development. Things need to overlap each other endlessly. “Arts and culture of a place reveal and enhance the underlying identity — the unique meaning, value, and character — of the physical and social form of a community. This identity is reflected through the community’s character or sense of place. A community’s sense of place is not a static concept; rather, it evolves and develops over time, reflecting the spectrum of social values within and around the community.”
