EXPERIENCE the Heart of the Cape Winelands

T

he scenic beauty of both Paarl and Wellington and the surrounding villages of Simondium, Hermon, Gouda and Saron compels visitors to explore the many cultural and historical attractions in the Drakenstein Valley, together with some of the most bountiful nature reserves in the surrounding mountains. Paarl takes its name from the huge granite outcrop that stands proudly on the crest of Paarl Mountain. The town was founded in 1687, is the third oldest settlement in South Africa and has a rich cultural and historical heritage. The birth of Afrikaans as the world’s youngest language is celebrated by the Afrikaans Language Monument that stands astride the southern slopes of Paarl Mountain. The town has many fine examples of Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Cape Dutch era buildings that compete for space with a wide variety of fine restaurants and coffee shops spread out along the twelve kilometre-long Main Street.

Just outside Paarl is the Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela spent his last years of captivity and from which he completed his long walk to freedom. Wellington was founded in 1840 and was named after the Duke of Wellington. The region is renowned for its beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads and gardens. The historic Bain’s Kloof Mountain Pass,

with its unsurpassed vistas, indigenous flora and fauna and crystal-clear rock pools, is the perfect spot for hikers, while closer to town guided wine-walks and horse-trails through farmland and fynbos

can be enjoyed. The dried fruit industry is synonymous with Wellington and the town is surrounded by fruit orchards, wine estates and olive groves. Situated to the north of Wellington, the villages of Saron (originally a mission station), Gouda and Hermon are spread out in the midst of rich farmlands in the shadow of the Elandskloof and Winterhoek Mountains. Paarl and Wellington boast true country hospitality, award winning wine routes and estates and accommodation to suit a variety of requirements and budgets. The towns provide excellent conferencing venues and some of the most idyllic wedding venues in the Cape Winelands. You can revel in beautiful fynbos-rich walks and hiking trails, superb mountainbiking trails or take a relaxing drive through the countryside to enjoy the spectacular scenery and a leisurely lunch washed down with some of the region’s finest wines. We look forward to welcoming you to Paarl and Wellington! Return to Contents Page

T

he picturesque town of Wellington is a 45-minutes’ drive from Cape Town and a short fifteen-minutes’ drive from neighbouring Paarl. Wellington’s agricultural economy is centred on its award-winning wines, table grapes, deciduous fruit and fine brandy, and it is also home to South Africa’s sole whisky producer. The region is renowned for beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, picturesque environment, gardens and wineries. The historic Bain’s Kloof Pass, with its unsurpassed vistas, indigenous flora and fauna and crystal-clear streams and rivers, is the perfect spot for hikers and fly-fishermen, while closer to town, guided wine-walks and horse-trails through the rich farmland and flowering fynbos, can be enjoyed.

Wellington is surrounded by fruit orchards, wine estates, buchu plantations and olive groves. In addition, its vinecutting nurseries produce approximately 85% of the country’s vine root stock for the wine industry. The Wellington wine and brandy route boasts an array of fine wine producers from the region.

Hiking trails, bird and wildlife viewing, Unimog expeditions, mountain biking, 4×4 routes and abseiling are just some of the outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the mountainous terrain and scenic surrounds.

Visit the Wellington Museum with its diverse cultural exhibits, or “OumaGranny’s” House that provides a window on life in Wellington in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The town was renowned as an important academic centre for theological studies, and the Seminary gave rise to present-day Huguenot High School and the Huguenot Teachers Training College. Other educational institutions include Boland College and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Wellington boasts two leather factories producing hand-crafted, quality leather products and a variety of locally produced arts and crafts. Situated to the north of Wellington, the villages of Saron (originally a mission station), Gouda and Hermon are spread out amidst rich farmlands in the shadow of the Elandskloof and Winterhoek Mountains. WINES OF ORIGIN - Wellington

I

t is no idle boast that great wines are both born and raised in our Heart of the Cape Winelands. Proclaimed “Top Wine Area” at the exclusive 2010 South African Terroir Awards, Wellington wines and spirits regularly garner awards in many prestigious competitions, both nationally and internationally. Wellington is literally the “cradle” of the contemporary South African wine industry, supplying up to 85% of South Africa’s vine cuttings, known locally as “stokkies”. Once better known for its vital role in propagating and supplying this graf ted, Phylloxera-resistant rootstock, Wellington has, in recent years, emerged as an acclaimed trendsetting player on the South African wine scene, and a notable international wine tourism destination in its own right. Wellington is one of the youngest wine districts, since its independence from Paarl, and is in the process of deciding on its terroir-based wards. The compact Wine Route - with its dense concentration of beautiful, historic wine farms and estates - covers extraordinarily diverse terrain, stretching from the Berg River towards the Swartland wheat fields, and into the

foothills of the Hawequa Mountains. Most of the area’s 29 wine producers (including the large producer-cellar) are members of the Mutual & Federal Agri Wellington Wine Route and provide tasting room facilities and cellar tours. The artisanal Brandies are unique to this valley and a variety of other premium, handcrafted pot-still spirits (including Grappa, Absinthe, Vodka, Gin and Limoncello), are also produced in Wellington, as is the country’s first indigenous and internationally acclaimed single grain Whisky. Wellington plays host to the everpopular annual Wellington Har vest Festival, as well as the Absa Cape Epic and the new Fork & Cork food and wine festival. In August the f inest fruits of winemakers’ labours, selected for quality through blind-tastings by a panel of experts, are unveiled at the Quest for the Best - Top Ten Wines competition awards function.

From the ‘Valley of the Wagons’ came three separate stories – the Wamakersvallei tale, the legend of Wellington Wynkelder and the legacy of one of the oldest wine cellars in South Africa, Bovlei Winery. After many years of separation, these three cellars saw the synergies between them and by having the same goal of one central cellar for pressing grapes; they decided to take the future head on, together. Today, Wellington Wines stands proud with an honourable history, a strong human force driving their goals and an impressive product range of quality wines to specific requirements.

This historical icon is the fourth oldest mission church building in South Africa. In 1813 permission was granted to members of the Paarl Strooidak Church, to erect an “oefeningshuis” (the name for a building used for more purposes than church services) on land donated by a certain JH Baard, owner of the farm, “De Vreede”. The building was taken into service in January 1814, primarily as a venue for preaching the gospel to the slaves of the free burghers in the Drakenstein area. Today Het Gesticht functions as a museum on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 08h00 to 13h00 and can be hired for intimate wedding ceremonies and other non-political gatherings.

WINES OF ORIGIN - Paarl

T

he Paarl Wine Route, renowned for its rich, full-bodied, spicy red and crisp white wines, is the second oldest in the country. The area is best known for the quality of its Shiraz, the climate in particular favouring this variety. Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Viognier and Mourvèdre are increasingly well regarded. Paarl played an important role in the birth of the wine industry, with the establishment of KWV, the first commercial wine cellar, dating back to 1918, and the introduction of cold fermentation to promote wine quality in 1937 by the then owner of Nederburg, Johann Georg Graue.

In 1975 the Nederburg Auction of Rare Cape Wines came about when Günter Brözel introduced noble late harvest wines. His legendary dessert wine, Edelkeur, was and is, offered exclusively at the auction. More recently, Paarl made

headlines with South African and World firsts with the first bottling of Viognier, a Bordeaux Blend and Nouvelle in South Africa. On the international front, Paarl is home to the first white Pinotage, Pinotage fortified desert wine and the first blend of Tempranillo, Tannat and Tinta Amarella. Explore Paarl Wine Route by selecting a journey based on your interests. • Food & Wine – Experiment with tastes and food & wine pairing. • Heritage – Cape Dutch Homesteads and their history. • Pinotage – Discover our Proudly South African varietal. • Innovate – Taste World and South African firsts. • The Big 5 – Cellar tours of grandeur and a larger range of wines to taste. • Off the Beaten Track – Unique experiences at smaller wineries. • Adventure – Nature & Outdoor-lovers. • Relaxing Sundays – Wineries and Restaurants. • We Love Children – Food and fun for the little ones. Dating back to 1692, it is one of the best preserved werfs (farmyards) in the Cape Dutch tradition. The essence of Babylonstoren is keeping things simple and as true to the earth as possible. On the banks of the Berg River midway between Paarl and Wellington stands a Cape Dutch cottage circa 1784. The early communities in the region referred to it as De Jooden Tempel. History reveals that the first Jewish traders operating between the farms and villages in the valley used it as a convenient place for Shabat. Today, some two hundred years later, this original dwelling is home to Tempel Wines, where owners Alf and Marie Ljungqvist offer exclusive accommodation in a pastoral setting and produce passionately handcrafted estate wines. Let the legend of De Tempel linger on your palate…

Excellence

The towns that form part of the Drakenstein Municipality, namely Paarl, Wellington, Gouda, Saron, Hermon and Simondium, offer historical charm, culture, architectural heritage, wine and fruit farms along with warm and friendly locals. The beauty of the towns and surrounds entices residents and visitors alike to get up close and personal with nature. PAARL MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is a picturesque landscape of fynbos vegetation dominated by massive rounded granite rock formations set among wild olives, rock candlewoods and wagon trees. Fishing, hiking, picnics, climbing and mountain biking are enjoyed here. Resources within the Reserve include the Oukraal picnic site, and three braai areas: Meulwater, Krismiscamp, Pienaarscamp. It is also home to a botanical garden. Heritage resources in the buffer zone of the reserve include Muslim cemeteries, slave graves and “VGK” graves. Entrance fees are applicable. Open Monday to Sunday: 7am-6pm (1 April - 30 Sept) & 7am-7pm (1 Oct - 31 Mar)

THE PAARL ARBORETUM Paarl Arboretum is situated on the eastern banks of the Berg River and boasts 2600 trees and shrubs from 6 continents, on 32 hectares of land along the Berg River. The continents from the entrance gate, together with approximate species are: Europe (81), Africa (153), South America (48), Asia (185), North America (93) and Australasia (113). A layout and relief plan of Arboretum can be found at the entrance gate. Between continents and shelters, detailed wall plans showing tree position in individual continents can be viewed.

THE PAARL BIRD SANCTUARY Enjoy a quiet moment in the sanctuary that is set amid the Cape Winelands, while spotting the colourful Malachite Kingfisher – one of 140 bird species, including water fowl, ducks and flamingos in this 45-hectare paradise that is a mixture of wetland and mountain habitat. Listen for the thrilling cry of the Fish Eagle.
