In order to produce a fair HostGator Review I have spent some time reading user comments posted on various sites in case my own experience was not representative. Hostgator have been in the hosting business since 2002 and are one of the top hosting companies, hosting over 4 million websites. They offer three shared hosting plans plus VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting and dedicated server hosting. In common with many other hosts the services are Linux based until you get to the dedicated server level when Windows is an option. If you need Windows hosting for any reason, then you will need to look elsewhere but Linux is best for most users. Prices start at $4.95 per month (based on paying 36 months in advance) but, unusually in the hosting business, HostGator do allow you to sign up and actually pay monthly albeit at a higher charge. Several users commented that this was the deciding factor in picking HostGator but in any case there is a 45 day Money Back Guarantee and there is no contract so you can cancel at any time. HostGators service is user friendly, offering cPanel for controlling everything and Fantastico for easy installation of popular software, including WordPress. An uptime guarantee is given and the general view was that the technical service is very good. I did see one or two complaints about certain technologies not being supported but the website sets out what they do support and this will be fine for the vast majority of users. Support is an area in which HostGator has a very good reputation and there were lots of comments praising them. I have always found the support staff to be helpful and to be prepared to offer advice even where the problem was not theirs. Inevitably there were a few less positive comments, usually related to financial rather than technical issues, but no company is ever going to please everybody. HostGator issue coupon codes which give a discount on the first invoice, which is a common practice amongst hosting companies. HostGator do a better job than many of their competitors is making the terms of this offer clear but there are still users who are unhappy come renewal time when they are charged at the standard rates. Overall the many user comments I read backed up my own opinion that HostGator is a good safe option for web hosting and whilst it may not be the cheapest out there, the small extra cost will seem well worthwhile if you get stuck and need help.
