Comfort, safety and efficiency are at the heart of DAF design. From the comfortable cab and superior safety features to its sleek good looks, the DAF range is designed to make life easier for the professional truck driver and operator.

DEDICATED TO THE DRIVER

Driver comfort and satisfaction are essential elements to safer trucking. Clever cab ergonomics can lead to less distraction and less fatigue by increasing the ease of operation for the transport professional.

DAF SCR TECHNOLOGY

DAF SCR technology for a bright future DAF uses SCR technology – Selective Catalytic Reduction. This SCR technology offers an effective solution to comply with Euro 5 emission requirements. SCR technology is simple, reliable and efficient. SCR technology has been successfully used for many years in some of the harshest climates and industries in the world, including trucking, marine and stationary power applications. Over 1 million PACCAR Engines worldwide are successfully operating with SCR technology.

Comfort and convenience in a safer environment A DAF Truck interior is designed around the driver’s needs. With fully adjustable seats, logically grouped controls around the driving position, and a dashboard that would look at home in a luxury passenger vehicle, it becomes clear that safety and ease of operation were given the highest design priority. This means less distraction and less fatigue, making driving safer, more comfortable and less stressful. Once inside the cab, the sense of roominess is evident, accentuated by the large windscreen and side windows. The intelligent use of space and high-quality materials in warm yet practical colours creates an ergonomic environment that is both productive and pleasant.

A touch of class Special attention is given to the aesthetic design of the interior and durability of the materials. There are lighter trim colours for less frequently used areas, and darker, easier to clean shades for frequently touched areas. The camel grey coloured interior gives a comfortable feeling and offers a pleasant working and living atmosphere. Materials and finishes equal those of top class passenger cars, as do the well thought out comfort elements. The vents in the door panels, for instance, create a warm or cool air ‘curtain’ along the side windows for optimum driver comfort.

Practical space Drivers will appreciate the generous and practical storage facilities of the DAF cab. The Day Cab has a large lockable tray and cup holder on the engine tunnel and practical storage space above the windscreen. The Sleeper Cab also has storage space under the lower bunk. The under bunk storage locker on the left-hand side is insulated from odours and is accessible from the outside only. For long distance operation, the roomy Space Cab provides standing height on the engine tunnel, extensive storage space, including large illuminated lockers above the windscreen and room for home comforts like a TV, refrigerator and microwave.

Walking around a DAF truck will give you an appreciation of its good looks and performance pedigree. Perhaps what you can’t see is even more revealing and impressive. The active and passive safety features of DAF vehicles.

CLEARLY ONE OF THE SAFEST WORKING ENVIRONMENTS

With excellent temperature control, low interior noise level, high backed seats, large front and side mirrors and fully adjustable steering column, the DAF cab provides the driver with a comfortable and safer working environment. Responsive steering combined with the superior roll stability of the cab suspension provides enhanced vehicle behaviour. A safe and relaxed ride are further augmented by systems like Adaptive Cruise Control, Downhill Speed Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Vehicle Stability Control. To further enhance driver safety and confidence, optional systems include Driver's Airbag and Seat Belt Tensioners, side or front view camera, and HID Xenon headlamps. The latest in braking aids are all fitted as standard. Electronic Braking System (EBS) with ABS, Anti-Slip Control (ASR), Brake Assist, Drag Torque Control and Hill Start Aid. Altogether this makes a DAF truck purchase a safety first decision for transport operators and owner drivers alike.

DAF Trucks are built in worldclass facilities in Eindhoven (The Netherlands), Westerlo (Belgium), Leyland (United Kingdom) and Ponta Grossa (Brasil) by dedicated people using high quality materials, efficient processes and the latest robotics.

RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

DAF Trucks introduced the PACCAR Production System to achieve world-class manufacturing standards: everything right first time, with no unnecessary loss of energy or materials and with the highest conceivable quality. As a result, world-class products are produced in world-class factories. The engine factory, for the production of PACCAR engines, is state-of-the-art, making it one of the most modern of its kind in the world. In other PACCAR factories too, major innovation programmes have been undertaken to achieve the highest efficiency and quality levels.

Product development The DAF Technical Centre offers comprehensive research development and testing facilities, including an anechoic chamber for noise measurements and a state-of-the-art engine laboratory. DAF also has an extensive proving ground for simulating road conditions so vehicle performance can be thoroughly tested. DAF Trucks delivers world-class vehicles designed in world-class development facilities by a world-class development team.

EcoDesign and environmental policy DAF has an environmental policy in place for over 15 years, covering all its activities, products, services and locations including dealers. Its environmental care system is ISO 14001 approved. And DAF has achieved a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ status. This means waste is either recycled, reprocessed, or used for generating energy. EcoDesign is the company’s unique approach to environmentally responsible product design, and is concerned with ensuring that all DAF’s products comply with the strictest environmental guidelines, from first concept to end-of-life recycling.

DAF uses the PACCAR Production System: right first time; no waste of energy and materials; highest quality standards.

DAF is a global organisation with over 85 years of experience in vehicle engineering and manufacturing. Delivering a broad product range, DAF is a leader in the European market and is the vehicle of choice for discerning customers across Europe. The Australian trucking landscape is one of the most demanding in the world. DAF Australia offer a range of trucks which have been tailored to exceed the demands of Australia's harsh environment.

It is this combination of world class products, local knowledge and support, that delivers the distinctly DAF difference.

A PROUD HISTORY DRIVEN BY QUALITY

A proud history of quality European engineering On 1 April, 1928, DAF’s founder, Hub van Doorne, established a small engineering business in Eindhoven, The Netherlands called ‘Hub van Doorne, Machinefabriek en Reparatie-inrichting’ (the Hub van Doorne Engineering Works and Repair Shop). Together with his brother Wim he laid the foundations of DAF as a leading truck manufacturer. After Hub van Doorne proved to be the only one who could get the special sleeve-valve engine in the brewery owner’s car to work, he was offered a small workshop at the side of the brewery. Early activities focused on welding, engineering and forging work and within a year there were 32 people on the payroll.

The Great Depression saw a shift towards trailer manufacturing and the change in name to ‘Van Doorne’s Aahangwagen Fabriek’ (Van Doorne’s Trailer Factory) which was abbreviated to ‘DAF’. The introduction of assembly welding chassis’ resulted in a feather-weight semi-trailer that attracted the attention of everyone in the trade. In 1936, DAF became one of the first suppliers of container trailers in the world while employing 100 people.

In 1949, DAF manufactured their first truck, which was one of three prototypes. The production of commercial vehicles followed with the introduction of three models; the 3 tonne (A-30), 5 tonne (A-50) and 6 tonne (A-60). With the evolution of production from trailers to commercial vehicles, DAF was renamed DAF Automobielfabriek N.V. (DAF Automobile Factory), employing 184 staff and producing two vehicles a day.

In 1950, DAF’s rapid growth resulted in the establishment of a larger production facility (9,000m2) on the current Eindhoven site. DAF incorporated a one tonne A-10 van to their range and later the A-107, a pick up truck developed for export purposes. Specialised chassis’ to accommodate tipper bodies were introduced, as were a complete range of military vehicles. The Dutch Army went on to purchase 3,600 military vehicles in 1955, and the 10,000th DAF truck came off the production line.

A new factory was built on the Eindhoven site in 1957 so engine production could begin on-site. Production of the DAF passenger vehicle also began. The ‘Daffodil’ was later introduced and over the years, DAF N.V. produced around 820,000 passenger cars. The in-house production of axles began for DAF’s commercial vehicles and by 1965 a completely new axle and cab facility was built in Westerlo (Belgium).

In 1962, DAF introduced the new 2600, a modern truck that could also be supplied with a sleeper whilst its compact design allowed for optimum load length. The 2600 was nicknamed ‘the mother of international road transport’ and DAF became the market leader in driver comfort.

On 7 July 1964, the 50,000th DAF truck rolled off the production line. At the start of the seventies, DAF introduced a tilt cab, making engine maintenance easier and less time consuming. Three years later, a 20cm wider version of this tilt cab was used for the new 2800. With its twin-bunk sleeper cab with full-size beds, and its powerful 11.6 litre DAF engine, this was one of the great milestones in the history of the company. DAF was the first truck maker in the world to use a turbocharger in combination with a charge cooler (which it called ‘intercooler’), as a result of which the engines were able to deliver even more power and torque while keeping fuel consumption low.

In the mid-eighties DAF undertook a project with British owned – Leyland Trucks, which initially resulted in the supply of Leyland-developed distribution vehicles carrying the DAF logo: the 400 van, but also the 600, 800 and 1000 distribution trucks, later called the 45 series. In 1987, DAF acquired Leyland Trucks.

DAF was highly successful and its top-of-the-range 95 model won the International Truck of the Year in 1988. In 1989, DAF was floated on the Amsterdam and London stock exchanges. Just like the 95 series, the lighter 65, 75 and 85 series launched in 1992 proved extremely successful.

In 1994, DAF introduced the 95 Super Space Cab, with even more space and even better driver comfort. In November 1996, DAF Trucks N.V. was acquired by PACCAR Inc. (Pacific Car & Foundry). The company is one of the largest and most successful manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks (Kenworth & Peterbilt) in the world.

DAF presented the new 95XF in 1997. It was the perfect truck for heavy and long-distance haulage. This was also the opinion of the international trade jury, which voted the 95XF ‘International Truck of the Year 1998’. In the same year DAF Trucks Australia was born as a division of PACCAR Australia Pty Ltd. DAF Trucks Australia’s early years were spent researching and developing vehicle specifications that met Australia’s demanding conditions.

In 2001, production began of the new CF series for mediumheavy and heavy haulage and of the new LF series for distribution transport. The LF was selected ‘International Truck of the Year 2002’.

During 2004, 45,000 trucks were built by production facilities in Eindhoven, (The Netherlands) and Preston (UK) - that’s 185 a day, compared with two a day in 1952. The XF105 featuring the new PACCAR MX engine available in both Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission specifications was launched in 2006 and wins the ‘International Truck of the Year 2007’.

In February 2015, the millionth DAF truck manufactured in Eindhoven was presented to Mr. Bálint Révész from the Hungarian transport company. '...reliability and low operating costs are our main buying criteria, not to mention the highest driver comfort. DAF knows how best to combine all of these requirements, which is why our fleet consists of almost 100% DAF's.' said owner and CEO, Bálint Révész.
