Message from our President

Greetings Sorors, I am excited to present the first Violet Newsletter for the 2018-2019 sorority year. The Violet reflects the spirit of the “small but mighty” Paterson Alumnae Chapter and a snapshot of all of the good work we have done during the current sorority year. I am proud of our ability to continuously connect with the community we serve by providing stellar programming defined by both our

national mandates and service area needs. Sorors, I applaud you for your devotion to service and the uplift of our community. Please take a moment to review this newsletter and enjoy our trip down memory lane. I want to publicly thank Information and Communications, under the leadership of Soror Regina Carter, for their due diligence in making this an enlightening newsletter.

“Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” -Dorothy Height FAITH…FORWARD…SERVICE

Happy Reading! Sisterly, Jonnine

National Night Out

The Paterson Alumnae Chapter (PAC) had the opportunity to participate in the National Night Out event, which took place on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 as part of the Coalition for Better Communities. Held at the Integrity Masonic Temple on Broadway, National Night Out was a collaboration between the community and the police department. Seven organizations and Assemblyman Benjie E. Wimberly planned an array of activities from 4pm-8pm. Each activity was designed to raise awareness of the services offered in the community by allowing participants to engage in fun activities, allowing the community to come together on one accord. PAC provided information on voter registration and information for teenagers. Children had the opportunity to ride a horse and interact with a black cowboy, and a “blow up castle was very popular with both adults and children. It was a great day with over 200 people who collectively gathered to fellowship with each other.

Apple Picking with PAC Membership Membership Services at Terhune Orchards in Princeton, NJ

The first membership activity for PAC Pearls of Passaic County took place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Terhune Orchards. Although a rainy and drizzly day, it was perfectly “fall” for Sorors Lindsay, Williamson, Medley, Gaines, Giles, as well as Soror Giles’ son and daughter. Together, we picked some delicious apples and had fun doing it! A little hayride to the orchards and then a car ride to the farm started our day. At the farm was music, food, wine tasting, pumpkin picking, candied apples, fall mum plants and a store filled with pies, cookies, jams, sauces, and so much more! We were small in number but a great time was had by all.

Health & Wellness

Giving Thanks By Giving Back

By Shiricka Brown

The Health & Wellness Committee of the Paterson Alumnae Chapter of

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. By Shiricka Brown

Shirley Chisholm, a notable member of our illustrious sorority, once said that, “Service is the rent you pay for room on this earth. For the past forty years, the Paterson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has serviced the Passaic County community with diverse programming, workshops, and various initiatives. This year, the Health & Wellness committee, under the direction of Chairperson, Tanisha E. Tuck, took its Thanksgiving initiative to new heights. Previously, the chapter donated Thanksgiving baskets to selected families in need to enable them to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with their families. This year, the Health & Wellness committee partnered with a local food pantry, Madison Ave. Crossroads Community Ministries, Inc. o f Paterson, New Jersey, which services Passaic County community members twice a week. The collaboration consisted of both a monetar y donation, as well as a donation of ten Thanksgiving baskets, whic h included the following items: a decorative tablecloth, mashed potatoes, rice, gravy, yams, marshmallows, vegetables, stuffing, cornbread mix, cake mix, icing, etc. Members of the Health & Wellness committee were charged with shopping for basket items, in addition to putting the baskets together, which they did in unison and with pure joy.

Health & Wellness

The preparation of the baskets not only served as a time o f fellowship, but as a reminder that we are all abundantly blessed and have something to be thankful for- one which is being able to be a blessing to others. On November 14, 2018, members of the Health & Wellness Committee met with Madison Avenue Crossroads Community staffers, including, Marlene Marocco, who served as a n integral source of contact for the pantry program. Marlene and Soror Tuck were in constant contact over the course of a month in order to ensure the day would go as planned. In addition to the presentatio n of the monetary donation and the ten Thanksgiving baskets, the Health & Wellness committee members assisted the food pantry staff with distributing the baskets, along with Thanksgiving turkeys, to community members/families. Tears of joy filled the room fro m patrons who were not expecting such a blessing. All parties involved were overjoyed and there was an immense amount of thankfulness, gratefulness, cheer, and most of all, an abundance of love dispersed in the atmosphere. In less than an hour, over ten families were blessed with all the fixings to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. The da y ended the same way it started, with a prayer, as hearts left the food pantry full of gratitude.

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed. ~ Maya Angelou

This festive event had an inside block party type of ambience where guests snacked and networked all while they listened to singing, poetry, and comedy. among other things. While the mood was light and fun, the various politicians and speakers on hand reminded all of the seriousness of the upcoming election: 33 seats in the Senate; 435 seats in The House of Representatives; and 14 State Gubernatorial seats. Education, registration, motivation, organization, mobilization and legislation were indeed the focus of the day!

SOCIAL ACTION

WE ARE THE 94% On November 26, 2018, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ) held its “94% Rally”. The purpose was to remind Governor Phil Murphy that he received 94% of African-American voted and of the promises made to the 94% must be kept. We are still watching and waiting for his initiatives that will directly impact our community. This well attended and organized event focused on three points: • Transforming NJ Youth Justice System • Restoring Voting Rights To Felons • Closing the Racial Wealth Gap in NJ

The Gala ____________________________________________________ On November 12, 1978, the Paterson Alumnae Chapter was chartered. Forty years of service to the Paterson and surrounding community. Friday, November 2, 2018, we gathered at the Venetian to celebrate 40 years of service to Paterson and the surrounding community. “A Ruby and Pearls Affair” was a night of celebration as chapter members, friends, and community members dined and danced to mark the 40 years of impact. The program commenced with chapter members strolling in and then singing the “Sweetheart song in unity. To reflect on the achievements of the chapter the accomplishments of past Presidents were reflected on and the chapter had the opportunity to formally thank them for their unified commitment to the Paterson Alumnae Chapter. We also were honored with the presence of charter members who had the vision to know that Delta chapter in Paterson NJ was necessary and vital to the community. Kudos to Jalyn Lyde who served as Chair and the rest of the Gala committee for a job well done. Faith, service and fortitude…let us continue to serve on purpose.

Founders Day 2019 On January 19th, 2019 the Paterson Alumnae Chapter had the honor and privilege to host the 48th Annual Statewide Founders Day. “Embracing Our Mission through Service, Sisterhood, and Fortitude” was the theme. We hosted 782 registered sorors at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, NJ where we, collectively, rededicated ourselves to our glorious sisterhood and loved on each other on purpose. We were blessed to have the First National President Cheryl Hickmon, National Secretary Elsie Cooke-Holmes, Eastern Regional Director Rosia Blackwell Lawrence, Eastern Regional Representative Faith Wade, NJ State Coordinator Robyn Sorbino and NJ State Facilitator Qianah Heavens present. Friday night was the Welcome Reception for sorors staying overnight. We laughed, ate and strolled in unity where that good ole Delta spirit emerged, setting the tone for an inspiring and exhilarating weekend for all participants. Saturday morning was the Rededication Ceremony where we had the opportunity to remind ourselves of our mission and honor our 22 prestigious Founders who paved the way for our dedication to providing direct service to our community. At the sisterhood luncheon, sorors continued to fellowship, shop on “vendor row” and witnessed an amazing program. First up was the dais entrance where we swayed to our unofficial theme song, “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge. Paterson Alumnae Chapter

Founders Day 2019 Next up was the opportunity for chapters to be represented with the “Parade of Banners” which included the first public appearance of Upsilon Phi, chartered in 2018 at Seton Hall University. After lunch, entertainment was provided by over 25 chapter members who performed “A Delta Reunion” written by Soror Dorothy Rowe. This play is a testimony to our history and what we have accomplished as dynamic Delta women. Thank you to those who participated; the audience enjoyed the opportunity to go back in time and see our Founders in living color. The keynote speaker was the East’s own First National President Cheryl A. Hickmon. Soror Hickmon reminded us that commitment to Social Action is prevalent, especially on voting rights and suppression and that we must be ready to rock the vote in 2020. She shared pearls of wisdom that reignited the desire in our hearts to be champions for those who are unable to speak for themselves. In conclusion she stated, “She would say a little prayer for us and that we should say a little prayer for her.” Kudos to the Chair Janis Lindsay, CoChair Lecia Williamson, and the Founders Day committee on a superb job on executing an amazing day.

“Only a man can see in the face of a woman the girl she was. It is a secret which can be revealed only to a particular man, and then, only at his insistence. But men have no secrets, except from woman, and never grow up in the way that women do. It is very much harder, and it takes much longer for a man to grow up, and he could never do it at all without women. This is a mystery which can terrify and immobilize a woman, and it is always the key to her deepest distress.-JamesBaldwin, IfBeale StreetCould Talk.
