Former Florida State University and Iona College Head Coach Pat Kennedy was named the Head Coach for the Men’s Basketball program on May 6, 2013. Now in his second season with the Setters, Kennedy returns home to Westchester County where he started as an assistant coach with the Gaels under legendary coach Jim Valvano and has deep roots in the New York City Metropolitan region. Kennedy comes to Pace after 31 consecutive years as a Division I Head Coach with stops at Iona College, Florida State University, DePaul University, University of Montana and Towson University. He has accumulated 494 wins during his 32-year career with eight NCAA Tournament appearances. “During my time at Iona and throughout my coaching career, Pace University has always been admired as an outstanding academic institution producing quality graduates,” said Kennedy. “The backdrop of the greatest city in the world and a highly competitive conference make Pace a special place for future student athletes. Director Brown’s vision of academic and athletic excellence can take Pace to the top of Division II athletics and I am very excited about leading the men’s basketball program in that quest.” Kennedy returns to Westchester County after he began his coaching career with the Gaels in 1978 as an assistant under legendary coach Jim

Valvano. He was promoted to head coach at Iona in 1980 and he guided the Gaels to back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1984 and 1985. He posted four 20-win seasons in six years and earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year honors in 1982. He finished his career at Iona with 124 wins, a .674 winning percentage, and won three MAAC Championships. Kennedy continued to have success as he moved to Florida State University in 1986 as he led the Seminoles to back-to-back 19-win seasons in his first two years at the helm and an NCAA Tournament appearance in year two. He went on to post five 20-win seasons in his 11 years with his best season coming in 1992-93 as the Seminoles finished with a 25-11 record. The 1992-93 team advanced to the Elite 8 in 1992-93 as the #3 seed in the Southeast Region. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 following a 21-10 season as his team advanced to the Sweet 16. Kennedy was a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches District Coach of the Year in 1992 and in 1993. In total, he guided Florida State to five NCAA Tournaments and finished with 202

wins at Florida State. Most recently, Kennedy was the head coach at Towson University in Baltimore. Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from King’s College in Pennsylvania where he played and coached for four years. Following graduation, he served as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team for two years at Lehigh University under future NBA Coach Brian Hill. Pat and his wife Jeannie are the parents of a son, Joey, who is a graduate of Northwestern where he played guard for the Wildcats and was a team captain in his senior year. Their daughter Kimberly is married to former United States Marine Zach Johnson and gave Pat and Jeannie their first grandchild, Landon Patrick Johnson. Their other daughter Kathryn is a student athlete on the track and field team at Towson University.

Matt Healing is entering his second season as the Assistant Coach for the men's basketball program. Healing serves as the Recruiting Coordinator for the program and oversees scouting, academics, game preparation, scheduling and travel. Prior to Pace, Healing served as the Director of Men's Basketball Operations at Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology. At NJIT, working under highly acclaimed Head Coach Jim Engles, Healing was responsible for recruiting, player development, academic oversight, team travel, film exchange and organizing alumni events. Healing also helped lead NJIT to the program's first-ever Great West Conference Championship. Healing coached NJIT’s all-time leading scorer, Great West Conference Player of the Year and Honorable Mention AllAmerican, Chris Flores, who now plays professionally with UniRiesen Leipzig of the German Basketball League. In total, three players that were coached by Healing were selected to the Great West All-Conference Team. Before NJIT, Healing served as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Vassar College for two seasons. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, game preparation, film exchange, and individual skill instruction. In Healing’s two years at Vassar, he helped the program triple its win total. Healing also served as both Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Assistant Sports Information Director at Centenary College in New Jersey. At Centenary, he again coached the program’s alltime leading scorer and was the Co-Director of the Centenary College Summer Basketball Camp. Healing began his coaching career in 2007 at Randolph High School in New Jersey, where he spent two season as Assistant Boys Basketball Coach. In addition to his coaching resume Healing has exceled working the basketball camp circuit. He has worked various camps for the Hoop Group, Hoop Mountain, Gym Rat Challenge, Marist College, and in 2012 worked in the NABC Final Four Boys Basketball Clinic at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Healing graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication from Monmouth University in 2004. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and is currently residing in Westwood, NJ with his wife, Daniela.

Coach Nat Harris returns for his fifth season at Pace. Harris, a 2008 New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame inductee is the former head coach of the New Rochelle High School varsity team where he recorded an astounding 247-66 mark. His teams were consistently seen at the Westchester County Center, playing in League I-A classics. He was named Coach of the Year twice by the Westchester Basketball Coaches Association, Section I, League I. He also served as this association’s vice president and president-elect. On the pro level, Harris is a former player-evaluator for the Orlando Magic and was also an assistant coach for the United States Basketball League’s Westchester Stallions (USBL). That team went to the USBL Finals. The New Rochelle native was also an established coach on the AAU circuit. He coached teams that won several tournament championships throughout the greater metropolitan area. Harris played basketball at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, but a near -fatal car accident cut short his potential collegiate career at St. John’s University. However, he managed to get back into basketball, enjoying a solid hoop career in several notable pro-am tournaments, including West 4th, Dyckman and Rucker Park. More recently, Harris served as Assistant Coach for Men’s Basketball at Purchase College (2008-2010), helping the team win their first Skyline Conference Championship (2010). Coach Harris resides in New Rochelle with his wife, Joanne, and daughters, Jhanay and Tiahna.

Kevin Berardini joins the Setters for his first season as a Graduate Assistant Coach on Coach Kennedy’s staff. Berardini was part of the Pace men’s basketball team last season as a player after playing for three seasons at Division I University of Illinois. In his lone season with the Setters in 2013-14, Berardini played in 14 games and started five. He totaled 62 points and dished out 27 assists for the Setters. In three seasons at Illinois, he competed in 25 games with the Illini and was selected as the 2013 Lou Henson Courage Award in his final season. Berardini graduated from Illinois in 2013 with a degree in political science and is currently pursuing his MBA from Pace.

Running Backs Joseph Hawkins will coach the running backs this season. Hawkins comes to Pace from Division I Norfolk State University where he was a four-year player for the Spartans. While at Norfolk State, Hawkins played tight end for the Spartans playing in 46 games in four seasons. He caught 92 passes for 1,103 yards and five touchdowns and was a captain in his senior season. Hawkins was a three-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honoree, including twice being named to the first team as a junior and senior. As a senior, he was a HBCU Honorable Mention All-American as well as a BSN Third Team All-American. He was a member of the NSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as the Vice President in his senior year. Hawkins earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Norfolk State in December 2013.

Outside Linebackers

Timothy Marmol enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Pace University football team. He will be in charge of coaching the outside linebackers. Marmol joins the Pace staff following a stint at Division I Florida Atlantic University as an intern to the defense. In that role, he assisted the coaching staff in preparation for summer recruiting visits and helped the defensive line coach with summer high school camps. Prior to joining FAU, Marmol spent two seasons at MacMurray College in in Jacksonville, IL. For the Highlanders, he worked as the Defensive Line Coach, assistant recruiting coordinator and equipment coordinator. His first coaching assignment was as the defensive assistant coach at Santa Monica College. In addition to his work as a collegiate coach, Marmol has a broad experience in working at summer camps including at the University of Tennessee, the University of Illinois, and Notre Dame.

Marmol is a 2010 graduate of the University of Delaware

with a B. A. in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies. He received his M. Ed. from the University of Missouri in July, 2014.

Devon Simmons will serve as the graduate assistant coach, working with the wide receivers this season. Simmons was a four-year player at Old Dominion. Simmons played defensive back for the Monarchs for four seasons, finishing with 191 tackles and three sacks. He posted nine career interceptions, which is tied for the most all-time in school history and his 97 interceptions returns yards in second all-time. He ranks third on the Monarchs’ record book in total career tackles. Simmons earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management with a minor in Management from Old Dominion in December 2013.

Strength and Conditioning

Mike Bohlander is in his eighth year as the Strength and Condition Coordinator for Pace Athletics. He is a 2002 graduate of Pace with a degree in Psychology and is currently pursuing a Master's in Counseling. Bohlander is certified by the NSCA (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist). As a four-year starter for the Division I Pace Baseball team, Bohlander rewrote the Setter record book, tying the single-season record for homeruns, blasting 17 in 2001 as a junior. For his career, he ranks second in school history in RBI and home runs, seventh in doubles, tenth in hits, and fourteenth in runs. During his tenure as a member of the Setters, Bohlander was named to the All-NYS Baseball Conference 1st Team in 2001, the ABCA-Converse All-Northeast Region Second Team in 2001, the ABCA-Rawlings All-Region Team in 2002 and was named to the NCAA Division I Independent All-Star Team in 2002. Bohlander was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 27th Round of 2002 MLB Draft.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Students with a creative flair and a desire to communicate have no problem finding an outlet; Pace sponsors two newspapers, two literary magazines, two radio stations, and two yearbooks. Plays, concerts, and performances by professionals and amateurs also enhance student life. There is also an active Student Government Association on each campus. The New York and Pleasantville campuses each sponsor several fraternities and sororities. While the emphasis is on good times and bonding, these organizations also put their energies to good work by sponsoring community service projects. Pace offers the opportunity to participate in athletics, either varsity or intramural. The Setters compete in 14 varsity sports in NCAA Division II with field hockey and women’s lacrosse opening play in 2015.

Founded in 1906 by the Pace brothers as a business school for men and women who aspired to a better life, Pace Institute began its transformation into a modern university, with emphasis on the liberal arts and sciences, under Robert Pace 42 years later. HISTORY OF PACE UNIVERSITY: Founded in 1906 by the Pace brothers, Homer and Charles, The Pace Institute was a business school for men and women who aspired to a better life. Homer and Charles Pace borrowed $600 to rent a classroom and office in the old Tribune building in lower Manhattan to teach 10 men and three women the principles of accounting and business law. That building once stood where the Pace Plaza building stands today.

Two years later, because of the overwhelming success of the Pace School of Accountancy, the Pace brothers relocated classes to the nearby Hudson Terminal complex. Another move to the Transportation Building at 225 Broadway took place in 1927 in response to continued growth. In 1948, Pace Institute was approved for college status by the New York Board of Regents. Academic expansion forced yet another move to 41 Park Row in 1951, and two years later Pace College received authorization from the State Education Department to grant the bachelor of arts degree. Classes began on the Pleasantville campus in 1963. The year before, the Marks Hall building was signed over to the College by Pace Trustee Wayne Marks, President of General Foods, and his wife, Helen. Soon after, Dyson Hall was constructed, named in honor of alumnus, Trustee and benefactor, Charles H. Dyson. Willcox Hall was named for Trustee and benefactor Byron Willcox. In 1965, the Undergraduate School of Business Administration, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education were established. The year following, the School of Nursing was founded and was later named after alumnus, Trustee and benefactor Gustav Lienhard. In December 1966, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Civic Center building, Vice President Hubert Humphrey promised to teach at Pace and conducted a Scholar-in-Residence seminar at the New York City campus. Finally, in 1973, the State Education Department approved Pace College's petition for university status. Two years later, the College of White Plains consolidated with Pace University, and the School of Law was established in 1976. The assets of Briarcliff College were acquired in 1977. In the years following, an international education center was opened by IBM Corporation, NYNEX opened a center and the Hastings Center moved its operations to the Briarcliff site. In 1983, the School of Computer Science and Information Systems was established as its own entity. In 1997, Pace purchased the World Trade Institute, a leading-edge provider of international training programs. Pace University today is a diverse institution with over 13,000 students. For 100 years, bright, motivated and talented men and women have walked out of Pace's many doors, degrees in hand, and have ventured into the world prepared for the challenges of each passing decade.
