Spotlight: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team

Photo: Pace Academy

Pace’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) team is composed of eight faculty members who devote themselves to making DEI a core value of the Pace community. Ms. Bria Samuels, a new faculty member who graduated from Pace in 2013, came back as the Director of Equity and Inclusion. She describes her position as “mak[ing] sure that students and staff feel like they are a part of the community,” as well as ensuring “that there’s support for students in all portions of their identity.” Since Ms. Samuels has responsibility over the entire school, she gave insight into the differences between the Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. In the Lower School, she focuses on their “Read for Respect,” selecting books with multicultural viewpoints and themes to create open minded individuals, while in the Upper School she focuses more on affinity groups. “There are affinity groups in the lower school, but they look a lot different,” Ms. Samuels explained, because “as high school students, you guys are able to articulate what you want more clearly … whereas in the Lower School, they’re like ‘we just want to have time to be friends.’” Ms. Samuels explained that everyone at Pace should be on their own DEI journey, and that requires “being more willing to be uncomfortable. It

The DEI team poses for a photo. requires you having the hard conversations. It requires you saying something when you see something, it requires you going to ask people if you're not sure what’s appropriate.” It is important to Ms. Samuels to recognize the faults in Pace’s DEI system, especially when she attended. “At Pace, I did not feel like I could always be my most authentic self because I wasn't from the Buckhead bubble. I wasn't a student who had been here for an extended period of time. I didn't really feel like a huge part of the community…I wanted to come back to Pace because I realized that there was always going to be a ‘me’ at Pace. There was always going to be someone who

may not necessarily be from this community. They're not a lifer, they don't live five minutes away from the school, and I want to make sure that they feel comfortable in a space like Pace.” Another member of the DEI Team, Mrs. Joanne Beauvior Brown, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, says that her position “includes student support, faculty and staff support and professional development, as well as touching other stakeholder groups that make up our Pace community. So families, alumni and working alongside our senior administrators to be sure that they are equipped to navigate some of the things that may come up in their respective areas

foods and dishes in an exciting environment. Composed of 18 sophomores and juniors, photography teacher Mrs. Jennifer Wilson and history teacher Mrs. Mindy Lawrence, the group’s mission for the school year is to explore new cuisines and restaurants around Atlanta. “We want to expand our knowledge of different cultures through trying new foods and exploring the areas around

Buford Highway,” said junior Zach Segall. On Oct. 1 the group met for its first meeting at the international farmer’s market. Upon arriving, the group split up into smaller groups and were given time to explore the different sections of the market, from the produce, to the fish and to the bakery. “I was very excited to see the produce section and found so many diverse fruits! I picked out starfruit, dragonfruit and rambutans to try” said sophomore Sydney Gaither. In the bakery section, the groups selected Mexican “pan de muerto” and pound cake. Another highlight was the fish section, a spot well known for its diverse options. “Although I am not a fan of seafood, the fish section was cool because we got to see the variety and how the fish was prepared,” said sophomore Bennett Cummings. After around one hour, the group met as a whole to purchase, discuss and try the items that each group selected. Some of these items included mochi ice cream, canned boba tea, Gansito cake and spicy Tofu sticks. Overall, the group’s favorite foods were the pound cake, the rambutans and dragon fruits and mochi. “The mochi was definitely my favorite because it was

of responsibility.” She thinks that Pace has come very far on our DEI journey, but reminds the community that DEI “is not just a program that you take off the shelf and then put it back on the shelf, and it's also not a destination. It truly is a journey that our whole community has been on in examining how we look at belonging and how people feel when they are at Pace and identifying where those gaps may be, knowing that we've been very honest in where we may have fallen short and supporting every stakeholder member or community member at our school.” In her position, Mrs. Brown places a lot of emphasis on a “shifting of the lens of DEI from

a program to truly a core value and a part of our culture at our school.” Mrs. Brown thanks the faculty members who support her DEI efforts: “It really takes our teachers and our staff who are boots on the ground in the classrooms and in different spaces to do a lot of that lifting. And so seeing how they have grown in owning that work has really been what I'm most proud of.” Upper School English teacher Dr. Jason Brooks and Administrative Assistant to the Head of the Upper School Ms. Nikki McCrary are both US Diversity and Inclusion coordinators, and Dr. Brooks says that his position includes selecting inclusive texts with different viewpoints and cultures for Upper School students. “You’re stuck with a dead white guy like Shakespeare; how do you then provide lenses to read Shakespeare in a way that recognizes some of those other voices ... to me, the diversity part starts with the syllabus.” As someone who has worked in DEI divisions at other schools, Dr. Brooks has a special appreciation for Pace’s success in this field. “A lot of schools, especially in response to the summer of 2020, did a lot of performative hiring. Well, they’ve hired their DEI coordinator and then they set that person free in the school to do things, but not with an actual mandate.” However, Pace is separated from these other schools because “we actually have a mandate to make this one of the pillars of the Pace community, and we have eight people on this team, which is huge.”

I would definitely try it again next time,” said Zach Segall. “I loved getting to sit down and try all the new foods as a group and comparing our opinions. That was probably my favorite part,” said sophomore Serena Shang. Reflecting on the trip, sophomore Ashley York mentioned how grateful she was to go on the trip. “My favorite

part was walking around and immersing myself in the different isles and cultures. I got to try so many new foods that I really liked!” Sophomore Rebecca McCloskey mentioned that her favorite part was the variety of foods the market had and how many different countries and ethnicities were represented.

Spotlight on New and Old Clubs at Pace to participate in Muslim Culture Club, and contact Aliyah Aftin for questions!

Muslim Culture Club: Showcased at the Club Fair among the several other new clubs created this year was Muslim Culture Club. Junior Aliyah Aftin has been working with Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer Ms. Joanne Beauvoir Brown to start this new opportunity. Aftin recognized there was a gap in what Pace students knew about Muslim culture. Even though there are two billion Muslim people in the world, she points out, we can feel detached from that at Pace, and “I want to make it less foreign to people,” she said. “Last year we had the first Eid presentation, which I did, and I want to expand on that to share culture and experiences,” Aftin said. The club isn’t a religious club, but instead focused on Muslim culture. Although the club is just starting out, opportunities could include sharing food by having lunches from different countries, movie nights in the FAC, and potential fundraisers. Look out for opportunities

Bagels and Bonsai: Boasting one of the most popular club instagrams at Pace and the largest number of members is Bagels and Bonsai Club. The unlikely combination of bagels and bonsai proves quite successful, as its members find peace and stability in the teachings of the club. Club leader Henry Levenson says, “money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy bagels and bonsai.” However, this year Bagels and Bonsai has had trouble, as Student Council denied them funding. The club requested money to pay for the Goldberg’s bagels traditional at their meetings, and Student Council said clubs must pay for their own food. Bagels and Bonsai retaliated by kicking all Student Council members out of the club, but they have still not received any funding. Gallery. Any student can submit poetry, short stories, personal essays, photography and artwork by emailing knightgallery@ paceacademy.org, and then members will review the work and decide whether to include it in the publication. The magazine is given out at the end of the year and features a wide variety of literary works from all grades created both in and outside of classes. This year the club’s faculty advisor is English and creative writing teacher Mrs. Hayley Conroy. Knight Gallery had lower membership than usual last year, but the editor of Knight Gallery, Senior Millie Gray, is trying to revive it, and they’ve already had good turnout so far this year. “We’re excited to read a lot of cool pieces, eat good food, and have a fun time,” she said. BSA: Black Student Alliance, or BSA, has had a successful start to the year, and both new and returning members are already enjoying it. Junior Dallis Welsh says “I enjoy BSA because it’s a way for all the Black students to come together and enjoy things like music and movies even if we’re not in the same classes.” BSA had a big turnout at the club fair and is already planning events for the next couple months. Senior and club leader Sidney Keys said “BSA has a movie night planned on October, Friday the 13th” and the club is already working on projects for February, which is Black History Month. JCL: You may have heard Junior Classical League, or JCL, announcements at assembly, but you might be surprised that JCL has been around for about 20 years at Pace. In recent years due to COVID-19 the program hadn’t been as large, but recently it’s been revamped under the leadership of club leaders Van Muller and Claire Jiang. Although JCL is primarily known as a Latin club, Junior Van Muller said “we’re trying to spread it as not just a Latin

club but more of a classics club, because there really is something for everyone.” Last year featured many exciting events set up by JCL, including Latin Quiz Bowl competitions, or Certamen, and celebrations of Roman holidays like Saturnalia and Lupercalia. Junior Van Muller was especially proud of the popsicle boat race in the pool in celebration of Quinquatria, saying these projects are “emblematic of what we value as a chapter, which is fun.” JCL has local, statewide, and nationwide competitions, and Pace had a lot of success last year. Junior Claire Jiang became Georgia’s JCL First Vice President, Pace won March Photo of the Month at the state competition, and Muller was first in the country for tenth grade decorative stitching and textiles. JCL has even begun to expand beyond the Upper School. Middle School Latin teacher and Sixth Grade Dean Kim Peterson and Middle School Latin teacher and Eighth Grade Dean Stewart Tarvin have set up a middle school chapter of JCL. They were able to do a mosaic project for Lupercalia and also participated in the Quinquatria boat race. “This year we want to continue the JCL spirit, and we’re ramping up everything we did last year and more,” Muller said. JCL participates in service projects and this year plans to focus on migration. “I went to Greece this summer on an ICGL trip, and along with looking at classical ruins we also learned about the refugee crisis there,” they explained. “In JCL, I’m hoping we can work with organizations like the Hope Project and Safe Place to provide aid for migrants. Other plans include expanding membership, launching a website to streamline communication, and adding even more events. “I’m so excited to see what this next year brings,” Muller said. “We have a lot of people going to Fall Forum and I hope they see there how amazing this community is.”

Pace PSAT Goes Digital book App through the College Board. Students could potentially be looking at digitizing exams such as AP Exams, semester finals, the American College Test (ACT), and the SAT. Juniors will have the opportunity to apply for National Merit Scholarship programs. “The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition among high school students for recognition and scholarships.” For Sophomores, this test is just for practice and to help provide a baseline for the SAT. “I think that this will be less stressful not having a big stack of paper right in front of me,” said Sophomore Dylan Nelson. Since this test will require all students to be connected to WiFi, Pace students

tested their internet connection multiple times before taking the test. “There were many routers to help with the WiFi so hopefully the WiFi will improve because

of this,” Nelson said. “I can never get work done in Inman, so having the WiFi improved will allow students to get school work done.”

New for 2023, Pace juniors and sophomores will be taking the Practice Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) online to prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Bringing the digital aspect of the PSAT is a huge innovation for schools all around the country. Not only does this save paper, but it is more efficient and provides a way for students to prepare and practice before taking the test. There are practice tests and previews of the formatting to help students acclimate to the test format. Es-

pecially for the sophomores, this format of testing is very new and can be hard to navigate. Now, students have the option of practicing with the format creating a less stressful test environment. Providing learning accomodations is also easier when we use the digital test because it simply readjusts its settings. Also, there are certain sections of the test that allow calculators, while some don’t allow the use of a calculator. This allows students to better manage which sections they are permitted a calculator since the test provides an online calculator for you. Students who have calculator accommodations are permitted the use of a calculator throughout the test. Pace students will be using the Blue-

Snack Bar Prices Surge Without Warning

If you are on a budget this year, be warned! Prices of various snacks at Pace Academy’s snack bar have skyrocketed since last school year. Unity Runtime Fee Causes Controversy

Photo: Unity

On Sep. 12, the game development engine, Unity Software, released a statement indicating that they would be adding a per-installation fee called the Unity runtime fee. As long as a Unity game passed a threshold of yearly revenue and total lifetime installs, it would be charged a flat fee per install. This change will be effective starting from Jan. 1. The Unity game engine has two parts to it: the Unity editor and the Unity runtime. The Unity editor is where all the code behind the game is created, and the Unity runtime is the software that is installed on a customer’s computer in order to properly run the game. Previously, Unity was a subscriptionbased service that charged based on which plan you chose (Unity pro, personal, enterprise and industry). This new fee will not be charged retroactively, so any current Unity games that have passed the threshold will not be affected. However, this new fee is a flat fee based on the number of installs of the Unity runtime a game receives, but it is only in effect if a game reaches a threshold of $200,000 in revenue over 12 months and 200,000 total lifetime sales. “A large majority of Unity Editor customers are cur-

A developer uses Unity to create his game. rently not paying and will NOT be impacted by this change,” wrote president for Create solutions Marc Whitten. This fee was aimed towards the larger games like Pokemon GO or Fall Guys that were created through Unity. However, many both small and large creators alike were outraged. “This decision puts us and countless other studios in a position where we might not be able to justify using Unity for our future titles,” read one post on X from AggroCrabGames. “If these changes

aren’t rolled back, we’ll be heavily considering abandoning our wealth of Unity expertise we’ve accumulated over the years and starting from scratch in a new engine. Which is something we’d rather not do.” Additionally, the creator of Among Us Innersloth said that it would “delay content and features our players actually want” due to the new fee. In fact, many developers have already switched to other platforms like Unreal Engine or Godot. In response to the backlash,

Whitten released an apology statement on Sep. 22. “Our goal with this policy is to ensure we can continue to support you today and tomorrow, and keep deeply investing in our game engine,” said Whitten. “You are what makes Unity great, and… we need to work hard to earn your trust.” A couple of policies were changed in the post. The Unity personal plan would no longer recieve any runtime fees, even if it surpassed the threshold. In addition, the threshold for yearly

earnings before the fee was increased to $1 million instead of $200,000. The fee will also be capped at a 2.5% revenue share, even if the calculated fee based on the number of people downloading the game exceeds that percentage. They also changed the basis from installs to “initial engagement.” This only counts the first time a customer installs the game, meaning that reinstalls or installing on multiple devices don’t count as multiple.

niques, and variety and harmony of flavors. One star signifies the restaurant is high quality and worth a stop, two stars means excellent and worth prioritizing, and the highest level of three stars signifies exceptional quality and that the restaurant should be a part of your travel plans. However, even one star is a tremedous accomplishment and would be a huge recognition to Atlanta’s culinary scene, given no Atlanta restaurants have any stars currently. Michelin also gives “Bib Gourmand Status”

for restaurants that serve the most affordable high quality food and Michelin Green stars to reward environmentally sustainable cooking practices. While it may seem strange that the Michelin Tire company is such an authoritative figure in restauranteering, their stars are some of the most respected rankings in the food community. The practice started as giving recommendations to tourists in hopes to make them drive more and therefore need more tires, but now the process has become

very official. Eater Atlanta polled its readers on guesses for which restaurants will get stars. Some popular choices were Lazy Betty, Bacchanalia and Mujo. Lazy Betty is a high end restaurant with four or seven course meals. Mujo is a Japanese sushi restaurant where you never order. Your dishes are hand selected by the chef and the meals change each day. Similarly, Bacchanalia’s menu is always changing, though it always features fresh food

from the owner’s farm Summerland. Atlantans are optimistic about their chances, but it is possible to get no stars. Last year, Michelin visited Denver, Colorado and awarded no stars to any restaurants in the area. Nevertheless, restaurants and visitors alike hope Atlanta’s diverse mix of culinary styles and cultures will be appreciated and highlighted in the guide with multiple awarded stars.

Michelin Announces Visit to Atlanta

Photo: Lazy Betty ATL

Atlanta will soon be getting our very own Michelin Guide! Every year, the Michelin Tire Company announces their ratings of various restaurants around the world. Previously, no Atlanta restaurants had been considered for Michelin stars, but on July 11, Michelin announced their anonymous inspectors would be visiting Atlanta to possibly award stars. “We want to recognize that Atlanta is a culinary powerhouse, with a long list of styles and flavors for foodies to enjoy. One might immediately associate the city with Southern cuisine, and rightfully so, but there is much depth here that should not go overlooked,” said the International Director of the Michelin Guides, Gwendal Poullennec, in a press release. Atlanta’s cultural diversity is certainly reflected in its culinary scene, drawing from Ethiopian to Korean to Mexican cooking, especially on the famed Buford Highway. Every restaurant under consideration is visited several times a year to determine its quality of food, mastery of cooking tech-

Conflict in the far east has risen to new heights with increased Chinese aggression toward Taiwan. When the Communists took control of China, many people fled to Taiwan including the former government. Since then, mainland China has always been trying to reunite the two. Tensions have always been high between Taiwan and China, but they reached a new peak with the election of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. Ing-wen refused to endorse pro-china policies and follow in the path set by her predecessors. China did not take lightly to this, and began implementing retaliatory measures including sending fighter jets near the island. China claims that Taiwan is bound by the 1992 consensus, but the content of the consensus is unclear. Both sides’ leaders

continue to fight for their sides and the tension is only building. US involvement and support of Taiwan may be the reason why Taiwan is still around. The U.S. follows the One-China policy which recognizes Taiwan’s government as the only government of China. This document also rejects the use of force to settle this dispute, maintains cultural and commercial ties with Taiwan, commits to sell arms to Taiwan for self-defense and will maintain the ability to aid Taiwan in a matter of national defense. The U.S.’ main goal is to maintain peace in the region and keep Taiwan around. In 2022, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan and met with Ing-wen. China was furious and threatened to harm Pelosi, but she still went and showed her lack of fear towards the Chinese. US involvement in the region definitely is assisting in the security and stability of Taiwan. Without the U.S., China may have invaded and reconquered

Why is Hamas Attacking Israel?

Photo: jpost.com

What is going on in Israel right now? On Oct. 7 at 6:30 a.m. Hamas, a terrorist group driven by genocidal racism, launched a planned attack on Israel in an attempt to gain leverage and annihilate the country. Hamas controls the Gaza Strip, which is a Palestinian region that borders Israel. Next, Hamas fired a barrage of over 3,000 rockets while terrorists stormed into Israeli settlements, using hang-gliders to fly in and secure the area. Later in the day, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported being targeted by a Hamas commando unit, and their communications were disrupted. The final part of Hamas’ operation was to seize hostages, which included Israeli children and citizens from at least 18 other countries. At 10:34 a.m. Israel announced a declaration of war against Hamas. At a music festival in Israel, young Israelis were celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot before Hamas terrorists broke into the open space and started firing. Many Israelis were kidnapped by these armed Hamas terrorists. There was nowhere to hide as the festival was taking place in a rural area surrounded by flat fields, roughly two miles from the Gaza border. Explosions could be heard as civilians were fleeing the festival. As of now, upwards of 260 people have been pronounced dead from the festival alone. So, why is Hamas attacking Israel right now, especially after convincing Israel it did not want to go to war for over two years? On Monday, Oct. 2, Hamas and Iranian security officials held a meeting in Beirut to plan the surprise attack against Israel, where Iran’s government decided to move forward with the assault. Hamas constructed a mock Israeli settlement in Gaza where they practiced a military landing and storming the settlements. Hamas attacked Israel

spreading hate and propaganda. Another reason Hamas chose to attack Israel now is that Israel is distracted from their own internal conflict. Over the last few months, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to withdraw power from the Supreme Court of Israel caused an unprecedented number of protests. For Netanyahu, this is another way to gain power, as it would eliminate checks and balances for the government. Many protesters believe that this overhaul is destroying democracy in Israel and creating a situation of unlimited power. The Supreme Court and lower courts would no longer be able to stop government decisions that are deemed extremely unreasonable. Ultimately, the government would be able to pass legislation that judges can’t review. This conflict was splitting Israel in two, and many reserves in the IDF refused to show up for duty until Netanyahu repealed the act. With the smaller number of reservists, Israel’s national security was weakened when Hamas attacked them. Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Yariv Levine had different opinions on the matter. As one of the biggest trailblazers of the judicial overhaul, he stated, “This judicial reform is necessary in order to reign in a judiciary that has too much power.” Subsequently, he believes his actions will benefit the people of Israel, claiming that the judicial system works against the people. Israeli politics are very complex, and not that similar to the U.S. government. A big part of Israel’s politics is embedded in the Knesset, which is the Israeli parliament. In elections, Israeli citizens will vote for the party of their choice, and that party gets a certain amount of parliament seats based on how many votes they get. Then, the party selects the candidates who will represent them in parliament. These new parliamentary leaders will vote for a candidate in parlia-

ment to become Prime Minister, who has received a majority. Even though Netanyahu has been criticized for many years in Israel, he has still been picked as the Prime Minister because the most popular parties (such as Likud) selected Netanyahu as their choice. Netanyahu has now served as Prime Minister for 15 years, being the longest-tenured prime minister in Israel’s short history. Netanyahu is on the far right side of Israel’s politics, and many of his supporters are ultra-Orthodox Jews. These ultra-Orthodox are religious extremists and generally hold anti-LGBTQ+ and racist ideologies as well. These differing parties are not neutral, which is why their strong willed and contradicting ideologies make it so difficult to compromise on issues. The Knesset plays a very similar role to the U.S congress. The Knesset also has a majority of far-right representatives, leaving the courts as the only barriers of what Netanyahu could accomplish. Israelis, Jewish people around the world, and other allies continue to show support for Israel. When thinking of the Israel-Palestine conflict, it is important to never forget how the Holocaust killed over 6 million Jews; humankind can never let such a catastrophe and terrible genocide happen again. “We will not allow a reality in which Israeli children are murdered,” said Israel Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. “I have removed every restriction — we will eliminate anyone who fights us, and use every measure at our disposal.” Israel is a miracle to the dwindling generation of Zionists because when it was created, it reestablished hope in society in the wake of the Holocaust. But, with the recent developments of war, anti-semitism and decreasing democracy, Zionists are again in fear of losing their safe haven.

FDA Declares Certain Decongestants Ineffective

Photo: Alamy

As the winter months approach, you might need to reevaluate ways to combat the inevitable cold. In September, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that a common ingredient found in over-the-counter (OTC) decongestants, phenylephrine, was proven to be ineffective. The FDA has not yet stated whether or not they are taking medications off of the market that contain phenylephrine. Phenylephrine is listed in more than 250 popular brands such as versions of DayQuil, Benadryl and Mucinex. A good thing to note is that the ingredient is still effective in nasal sprays, just not in pill or liquid form. A Deep Dive Into “Clean” Beauty and PETA’s Pledge

Photo: PETA

In the past few years, and especially as the internet makeup scene has flourished, attention has been brought to whether or not beauty products and brands are “cruelty free.” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is an organization that pledges to establish and protect animal rights, marking brands that they deem “cruelty free” with their signature bunny logo. Looking for this bunny on a product may seem like a quick and accurate way to assess a company’s morals and commitment to sustainability, but in reality, it’s much more complicated. In order to receive one of their bunnies on a product, PETA requires that “companies and brands must commit never to conduct, commission, pay for, or allow tests on animals at any phase of development, for both ingredients and final products.” This

PETA’s famous bunny logo, which can be found on their approved products. may seem all-encompassing, but in reality, it leaves space for a lot of interpretations and gray areas that allow companies to mislead consumers. PETA’s pledge does not directly prohibit large corporations from hiring third parties with questionable

methods, and does not look into the practices of these third parties before marking a company “cruelty free.” This means that companies can get away with making general statements about their individual commitment to clean beauty that are technically

true, but don’t factor in the work of foreign third parties, deceiving consumers. For example, L’Oréal, the parent company of Maybelline, CeraVe, NYX and Garnier, claims not to test any products or ingredients on animals, and used

includes performances from all of her ten albums with costume changes and backgrounds like no other. The three-hour tour has been compressed into a shortened two-hour movie that manages to capture the essence of each of her eras perfectly. The videography shows close views of Swift and manages to show every angle of the performance that would not be possible live. Fans who were not able to see Swift live now get the chance to see her full performance and experience one of her shows. The cinematography cap-

tures funny moments and fans in the crowd that show the wonderful atmosphere of the Eras Tour. Unlike the actual concert, the background music and screaming fans are not too loud. This allows for Swift’s voice to really shine and allows the audience to hear her voice clearly while she sings live. The choreography can also be better appreciated with an up-close view. The backup dancer’s impeccable moves allow the audience to appreciate how hard performing at that level must be. All of the small aspects

of creating a concert as big as Swift’s are better appreciated while in a theater. The fans can bond more and appreciate each other on a smaller scale. Fans at the theaters still sing very loudly and videos have already been posted of theaters having dance parties altogether. Seeing the movie in theaters is similar to a mini concert with fans singing their hearts out and exchanging friendship bracelets just like at the real concert. The Eras tour documentary has the ability to make strangers become friends instantly.

to be featured on PETA’s “Do Not Test” list. However, since their products are sold in China, where animal testing is required by law, L’Oréal is not truly a “clean” brand, and was taken off of PETA’s “Do Not Test” list. While it may not be as easy as checking for a bunny cartoon, websites like Cruelty Free Kitty and Ethical Elephant, who do extensive research and present their results in a quick article, make the switch to cruelty free beauty products as easy as a quick google. If you discover that a product you’ve been using or a company you’ve been buying from isn’t cruelty free and you’ve been trying to switch to clean beauty, it is important to remember that you should not immediately discard said product. That would be incredibly wasteful, which is the opposite of what the “clean beauty” movement advocates for. A more sustainable option would be to use that product until it’s empty, and then, when you’re going to buy refills, try a clean or “cruelty free” alternative.

Tricks or Treats? New Candy This Halloween These candies are described as “having a tangy mustard flavor combined with the candy’s iconic chewy texture doused in a yellow coloring.” Marketing Director of Mars, the company that owns Skittles, Ro Cheng described the reasoning behind the creation and release of Mustard Skittles. “[We want] to inspire moments of everyday happiness and deliver unexpected ways for fans to experience the brand. That’s why we’ve teamed up with French’s to create the firstof-its-kind Skittles that combines their tangy mustard flavor with our iconic chewy texture.” So, if you can “mustard” up the courage, make sure to try these new Skittles! They are found in

almost every supermarket, from Walmart, to Kroger and to Five Below. A few more new treats that might be more popular among trick-or-treaters will come out this fall including Neon Gummi Bears and Whozeewhatzit bars. Whozeewahtzit bars will include layers of chocolate crisp and peanut butter surrounded by a layer rich chocolate shell. Along with many new additions to the candy market, many candies have been discontinued, such as Candy Corn, Ghost and Bat Dot’s, and 100-Grand Bars. A classic favorite, 100-Grand Bars were sadly discontinued because their manufacturer closed, and will definitely be missed.

Make sure to look out for these sweet treats as you eat your yearly Halloween candy!

Gummy hot dogs, macaroni and cheese gummies and mustard Skittles? Are these treats or really just tricks? Beware, because this halloween season, these spooky candies have hit the stores! Classic brands including Kraft, Oscar Mayers and Claussen have partnered with manufacturing company Frankford Candy to turn their products into sweet treats. Candy foods so far include hot dogs, bacon, noodles, pickles and much more!

“The sweets are certainly eyecatching. The candy foods all look like tiny versions of their giant counterparts. The hot dogs even come with buns and condiments” said USA today. Although they look identical, the gummies are sadly not flavored. These brands are not the only ones creating unique treats this season. Skittles has also teamed up with French’s mustard to create an original combination: mustard Skittles! First released in honor of National Mustard Day back in August, they are stocking the shelves for the upcoming holiday. According to CNN, “Skittles’ newest flavor doesn’t taste like the rainbow.”

Is Netherworld Actually Scary?

Netherworld Haunted House

Netherworld, Atlanta’s most famous and eagerly awaited haunted house, announced its theme for the year; PRIMORDIAL and CRYPTID CHAOS. It was announced at the Atlanta Dragon Con parade, which was held on Aug. 13, 2023. Waiting a year to attend gave me time to wonder if my second annual visit to this year’s new attractions would provide the same high production value, expert scenery and frightening actors that I met last year. When I first walked onto the property, I was underwhelmed. Compared to last year, there were fewer actors wandering the ticket line to scare visitors, and the entrance area was less decorated. This led me to a negative first impression and the belief that the haunted house wasn’t going to be scary; however, that impression quickly changed once I got inside. As soon as I was inside the first hallway, I had to cross a spinning bridge in a dark

tunnel which made me disoriented and on high alert. From there, it only got scarier as I was surprised by many jumpscares, and creepy and disturbing decorations. Despite my initial fear that the haunted house would be a let down, the attraction created many fears as I walked through, living up to my expectations. Apart from the haunted house itself, Netherworld now offers many different attractions. Once you exit the main haunted house, you are met with several additional halloween themed options. For instance, the area just outside the exit is built to resemble the concourse of an American stadium. Concession stands line the parking lot selling traditional stadium food. There isn’t any Halloween themed food that money cannot buy. This area also offers plenty of picture spots with statues and signs for backdrops and very friendly actors dressed in duanting costumes. If you want, you can even splash around in a foam pit and dance to Halloween themed music. If you are still in the mood for more Halloween themed fun, for just $10 more you can dive

Netherworld actor dressed in insect costume poses for camera. into an escape room experience. Because this experience is only three minutes, I recommend instead investing that $10 in an action-packed game of Halloween laser tag for the same amount. Netherworld’s laser tag option allows you to select your opponents and puts one person in the role of the “monster” whose goal is to infect others

with a virtual disease. If that is still not enough freight, visitors have the option to venture into another spinechilling haunted house known as CRYPTID CHAOS. Your journey begins inside a trembling elevator, setting the stage for the heart-pounding that lies ahead. Upon exiting the elevator, you’ll find yourself immersed in

a maze-like haunted house experience with clowns lining the hallways and robotic monsters jumping at you. This haunted house is similar in length to the PRIMORDIAL attraction, and boasts plenty of heart-pounding jumpscares and intricately crafted decorations. To sum it up, Netherworld is undoubtedly worth both your time and money.

Conveys: Feasting in Atlanta After Hayes Go for a Walk! Hours Guide

Photo: Business Insider

Lucky for us, late night restaurants are plentiful in Atlanta. When you are craving late night classic, chain or unique experience, Atlanta has a ton of dining options to choose from after 10:00 p.m. From Waffle House to McDonald’s to Wendy’s and R. Thomas’ Deluxe Grill, rest assured that your biggest regret of the night will not be the lack of choice, but rather making the wrong selection of what and where to eat. The most obvious choice for late-night grub is a 24/7 Waffle House. Both the booth and the bar provide plenty of opportunities to eat with friends and family. From the moment you open the door and step into the bright lights, you are greeted with the reassuring smell of fluffy golden waffles, crisping hashbrowns and coffee. The comfortable sameness continues when you examine the laminated menu. Waffle House is always a great place for a late night meal because of the variety of food, consistency of quality, affordable price and of course, the jukebox in every location. To top it off, Waffle House servers are friendly, welcoming and are always ready for a late night crowd. While not as good as Waffle House, fast food is another option. McDonald’s offers some locations that are open all night with a drive-thru and a varied menu. The 65 year old world famous restaurant serves food quickly at a reasonable price which is great if you are in a time crunch to make it home before curfew. There is no guarantee, however, that your food is freshly made and many of the options are processed and not the healthiest.

An empty Waffle House before the late night rush. Like McDonald’s, Wendy’s also offers a reliable option for those seeking a late night meal. Their after hours service is also a convenient and fast dining choice. The menu offers their signature square hamburgers, crispy chicken sandwiches, delicious french fries and a sweet treat in the Classic Chocolate Frosty, the best item on the menu. Wendy’s, however, suffers from the same flaws and provides the same risks as its rival McDonald’s with the potential of late-night meals being pre-made food left under warming lights.

If you are looking for a restaurant that is open late with healthy options, table service, and a terrifying number of parrots, R. Thomas Deluxe Grill is your best bet. Located on Peachtree, it stands out for its commitment to health-conscious, environmentally friendly cuisine and strange decor. Its unique atmosphere paired with amazing food, juices and smoothies will leave you satisfied after a night out. However, you will spend more money compared to the other options and are limited to a single location.

Famous English novelist and social critic Charles Dickens was seen walking the streets of Portsmouth, England nearly every afternoon. Born into poverty, which limited his formal education and later having issues with his wife, excessive spending, and various health problems, Dickens was truly dealing with a lot. Dickens wasn’t going on walks for exercise, but rather for inspirations for his writings, reflections and most importantly to give himself a moment of solitude and tranquility in a busy world. In the Buddist practice known as “walking meditation” or kinhin, after a long session of work and attentintiveness the monks would go for a walk. On this walk they would free their mind from the mundane issues of life and simply enjoy the bliss of walking, but more importantly being present. You must be present as you walk. Put your phone away, let the worry of completing that next assignment evaporate as you move. Look at your feet. Notice the way they naturally swing forwards. Is it you who’s doing that? Feel the cement of the sidewalk pushing against your feet. Notice the bird on the telephone line. Consider who may have walked on that same very path years or even decades ago. When you feel your responsibilities or desires of the outside world push them away. Empty your mind and think about what you see. Walk away from the thoughts that are preoccupying your mind and fill your mind with thoughts of what you are seeing and feeling at the moment. Stress of school and social life can knock you down sometimes, but when that happens, what are you going to do? You aren’t going to stay sitting, held down by the weight of your worries, but you will stand up and walk on. As mountaineer John Muir famously said, “I go [on a walk] to lose my mind and find my soul.”

Freshmen Andrew Wilhelm and Pablo De Cock go for their daily walk.

Falcons, is the cheapest stadium in the NFL for food and drinks.” A hallmark of football is the tailgating experience, and there is plenty of space for an awesome tailgate outside of the stadium. Junior Thomas Costanzo says, “I have been to a tailgate at Mercedes Benz and did not even go to the game. That is how great the tailgates are.” The Atlanta Hawks reside in State Farm Arena. The arena holds 16,888 devoted fans. All Hawks games have celebrities in attendance like Quavo and Julio Jones. The arena offers a state of the art jumbotron that displays incredible images and lights onto the court. The Delta Club at Hawks games rivals that of a Braves game. The food is delicious, and it offers a great place to watch the game from court level. Also at a Hawks game, you are sure to leave with an awesome souvenir, whether it is a shirt shot out of the cannon by the cheerleaders at halftime or another shirt dropped from the roof in a Chick-Fil-A parachute. Senior Charlee Chastain says, “I love going to Hawks games. They are my favorite sporting event to go to in Atlanta.” Due to the incredible features of the Battery and the mouth-watering food options at the stadium, Truist Park is the best stadium in Atlanta to watch a sporting event. A lix Earle’s “Hot Mess” Podcast is Worth a Listen Photo: Howard Stern

Though the announcement of her podcast coming out definitely caused some doubt and uncertainty among fans, “Hot Mess” is an interesting and entertaining listening experience from TikTok star Alix Earle. Talking about almost everything from stories from her alma mater, the University of Miami, to her experience at New York fashion week, her very casual way of chatting makes it seem like an exciting debrief with friends. First, hearing about Earle’s crazy stories from Miami is so fun and relatable to many listeners. She describes her terrible experience at sorority rush in “My Sorority Nightmare,” where she was dropped from all of her top options and ended up being very upset. Because the episode dropped just as rush was at its peak at colleges across the country, fans could listen to Earle’s confession that any sorority is fun and that it doesn’t matter as much as she thought it would, and feel better about their experience. Also, in a group conversation with many of her friends, Earle talks about what it was like to meet people in college for the first time through hilarious stories and reading awkward DMs from her freshman year. Listening in almost feels like being in a conversation with the entire group, as their laughs and random additions make it a very relaxed environment, like a chat

Alix Earle explains her path to Social Media influencer prior to getting her podcast. with friends. An interesting discovery for listeners and key section of the podcast is the public announcement of Earle’s boyfriend, Miami Dolphins player Braxton Berrios. As her relationship had previously been very mysterious in her TikToks, with only references to the vaguely named “NFL Man,” in the podcast Earle discusses openly how she and Berrios met and eventually became official. Her relationship contributes to the NFL craze among girls, who have dramatically increased viewership and jersey sales to watch famous boyfriends, especially with Taylor Swift dating Travis Kelce. After going viral almost overnight during her senior year of college, Earle often discusses the giant changes to her life since in her podcast. Though people tend to make fun of her resume, she actually is an accomplished and interesting person as a result of her fame, from attending Chanel events in Paris to meeting with the Forbes “30 Under 30” board. She even has a scholarship in her name at the

University of Miami. In going through her crazy schedule, Earle gives listeners a fascinating description of her life and everything she does, in sort of a behind the scenes way. On her platforms, Earle is generally known as someone that tells the truth instead of making up things to seem more ‘perfect’ as social media generally encourages, and this continues in her podcast. In “Overcoming My Eating Disorder” especially, she dives into a well-known issue among girls and shares her real experience, showing the public that everyone, including celebrities, faces similar problems. While some segments of this part are a little cheesy and cliche, the positive of her sharing publicly outweighs the awkwardness. If you are looking for a fun and light podcast to listen to in the car, “Hot Mess” is a great option. Its mix of crazy stories and advice from Alix Earle, combined with its very chill and friendly feel makes it worth listening to.

The Falcons, Hawks and Braves are the most popular teams and stadiums in Atlanta. However, which stadium experience is the best? Truist Park is an outdoor stadium that is home to the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Truist Park offers a variety of food options that include the mouth-watering H&F burger, Chick-fil-A and delicious Dippin-Dots. The stadium also includes The Battery, which is used throughout the year as a great place to hang out and

eat. Truist Park holds 41,084 rowdy fans, the stadium offers a Delta Sky Club for certain seats and the food spread is jawdropping. Braves games are fun not only because the team is amazing, but also because of the lively atmosphere and all of the perks the stadium has to offer. Mercedes Benz houses the Atlanta Falcons football team. The stadium is an architectural wonder and houses 71,000 amped-up fans. The stadium has a sliding roof that allows the team to play in perfect conditions when the weather is rainy, but also allows for the Atlanta sun to shine through on perfect days. Arthur Blank, the Falcons owner, prides the stadium upon its cheap food. An article written by Augusta CEO said, “Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta

Sophomore Mitchel Walker attentively studies his celebrity crush on his favorite social media. Why are we insecure? The answer is comparison. Comparison can be motivating and healthy at times but the issue is the scale at which social media brings it to. In the stone ages you would compare yourself among your fellow tribe members. Now, with social media, you’re comparing yourself with millions of people all over the world. How could you not be insecure? When asking sophmore Jack Lynch to delete social media his response appalled me, saying “I need it though.” Why does anyone need it? Using social media is only doing a disservice to yourself. There is only one completely nonrenweable resource in the world, and that is your time. Your time has greater value than you realize. Consider how you are leading your life right now and ask yourself: in the future will I look back at this version of myself right now with a sense of pride or disgust? I can guarantee you from first hand experience that you will never be grateful that you spent time on social media. Make the proactive decision to take care of yourself and spend just 30 or even 10 minutes less each day on social media. Understanding the importance of your mental health and the effects social media is having on it is crucial. Spend some time in nature, go for a walk, learn about yourself and what you value. Of course everyone must find a happy medium with the use of social media, but you must understand that while it is okay to own technology, it is not okay to be owned by technology. If you are so focused on others and how they perceive you, you will never find time for yourself. Lack of understanding about your values and goals is a core reason for poor mental health. Social media prevents you from spending time in solitude and takes away opportunities to contemplate your mission in life. It is difficult to understand yourself if you are never by yourself. So stop allowing your ambition and values to be sucked out of you by social media and start pursuing what matters in life.

League Soccer (MLS) commissioner Don Garber celebrated the move by stating “Arthur Blank and Atlanta United, along with countless fans and many public and private partners, have shown that Atlanta has become a true soccer city and will be the perfect home for our federation.” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is thrilled about the move. Dickens said “Atlanta is a sports town, and just like soccer in America, we are dynamic, diverse and passionate. There is no better place for this sport to call

home during such a critical time. On behalf of the people of Atlanta, we are extremely honored to welcome U.S. Soccer to our community and look forward to this new partnership and our city becoming even more of a soccer destination than it already is.” The new training center will provide elite facilities for training, development, recovery and performance analysis. The training center will also include accessible locker rooms and training facilities to support the Cerebral Palsy, Deaf, and Power

Soccer National Teams, which are part of the nine U.S. Extended National Teams. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will be a huge advantage to the location of the new headquarters. The airport will make it easy for players from around the world to travel to and from their clubs, as well as making year-round training possible since it is one of the busiest airports in the world. The approximately 200-acre site for the facility has not yet been publicly identified, but the proj-

In recent years, there has been an increase in the debate as to whether or not synthetic turf truly has an impact on professional athletes and their injuries. The main issue about turf is that there is a direct relationship between non-contact injuries and artificial grass. The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has released data to defend their claim, in hopes of changing the playing surface for all NFL games. Feb. 13, 2022: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. tore his ACL while making a routine catch. Towards the beginning of Super Bowl LVI, Beckham Jr. was off to a fantastic start: reeling in two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. While attempting to make his third catch of the night, Beckham Jr. appeared to grab his knee and slowly fall to the ground. He was later ruled out with a torn Anterior Cruci-

Aaron Rodgers tears his Achilles less than four minutes into the first game of his Jets career. There was a lot of hype surrounding the Jets trading for Rodgers over the summer. Jets fanatics believed that this was “their year” as two of their players were named 2023 Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, and the addition of Rodgers made for a very promising season. While rolling out of the pocket, Rodgers was sacked by a Buffalo Bills defender, and viewers could see his Achilles tear on air. Members of the NFLPA were once again furious, Rodgers’s teammate, Breece Hall, was quoted saying “Grass. That’s my answer. We want grass. I busted my knee on turf. I want grass” when asked whether he prefers turf or grass. Additionally, Rodgers’s former teammate, David Bakhtiari said, “No one enjoys playing on it. Everyone is too scared to talk about it. NFL, just do better, be better, be an advocate for us and help us out.” Sep. 18, 2023: Cleveland Browns Pro-Bowl running back Nick Chubb tore his Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and

partially tore his ACL against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Turf is not the only cause of major injuries in the NFL. Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick made a low hit against Chubb. On sight, he appeared to break and tear every bone and ligament in Chubb’s left knee. Former defensive end JJ Watt expressed his condolences for Chubb, “Just the worst feeling. Gutted for Nick Chubb. Hope Minkah is ok. Injuries suck man. They absolutely suck.” Chubb’s injury not only affected the NFL world but all sports in the United States and around the globe; Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James said, “DAMN MAN!!!! [Praying for] Nick Chubb. Praying for the absolute best.” In general, it is clear that synthetic turf is an issue. It has been proven that players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact leg injuries when playing on artificial turf. Of those non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a staggering 69% higher rate of non-contact foot/ankle injuries on turf compared to grass.

ect team is prioritizing historically underserved areas on the south and west sides of Atlanta with convenient airport access. This move will have a large impact on Atlanta. For example, the money from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation will benefit Soccer in the Streets, as well as other benefit soccerfocused non-profits in Atlanta. The money will allow for more community programming, better training, and expert coaches for these local underserved communities.

U.S. Soccer Headquarters Moves to Atlanta The US Soccer headquarters will be moved from Chicago to Atlanta, and a new training center will be built in Atlanta to accommodate its women’s and men’s national teams, as well as its nine extended teams. In early 2021, Jackson State University (JSU), a small Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located in Jackson, Mississippi, hired hall-of-fame cornerback Deion Sanders (Coach Prime) as their head coach. Coach Sanders began his coaching career at JSU, and during his tenure, he completely turned around the JSU football program as well as making a big name for himself in the sports media world. Sanders shocked the world landing five-star recruit, wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter, gaining major publicity for himself as well as the school. In his final season at JSU, Sanders and Hunter led the Tigers to an undefeated regular season, but would ultimately lose to North Carolina Central 41-34 in the

Following his impressive season at JSU, Coach Prime signed a new contract with a struggling Pacific-12 Conference team, the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). Upon his arrival, Coach Sanders completely changed what CU Boulder football looked like. Using the

transfer portal, he brought many of his former players as well as other top athletes from across the United States to Colorado to come play for his team. “We got a few positions already taken care of because I’m bringing my own luggage with me, and it’s Louis, OK?” Sanders brought two of his top players from JSU

with him, Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Both have been making media headlines since before their arrival to CU Boulder. Coach Prime began his Buffalo career off to a hot start, defeating the 2022-2023 National Championship runner-ups, Texas Christian University, in a 45-42 shootout. The Buffs would go on to dominate Nebraska in their home opener and defeat in-state rival Colorado State. The Buffs would have a major setback their next two games though, losing to top ranked Oregon and University of Southern California. Through thick and thin, Sanders continues to make a strong media presence, letting fans and opponents know about his team and his coaching style. Sanders has made such a strong impact on the college football community due to his extremely unique coaching style. Sanders emphasizes not only the physical aspects of the football but also the spiritual and

emotional development of his players. He is known for inspiring and motivating his players through his spiritual beliefs and the media which he integrates into his coaching style as well as a basis for creating strong relationships with his players. He encourages his players to have faith in God and themselves and to give max effort not just in football but in all aspects of their lives. Prime’s coaching style has benefited him in future recruitments: Isaiah Arriaza, a top ranked quarterback in the Class of 2026, said “The reason I would love to play for CU is because of Coach Prime. He is not only a great coach and one of the greatest football players of all time, he is also a man I would like to be like when I grow up.” Sanders has transformed these players and the program from young athletes to self sustaining men who can make a life for themselves outside of football, creating a lasting impact on college football while doing so.
